An extended three-dimensional unstructured ocean model for simulating impacts of tidal stream turbines on tidal current, turbulence and surface waves has been applied to study the interactions between a tidal turbine farm and its surrounding environment. The present study aims to reveal three-dimensional local and regional changes due to the operation of a proposed turbine farm in natural coastal environment. Fine mesh size is assigned at the turbine farm location to capture the details of local wake dynamics, hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport. Large geographic coverage of the model provides details of changes in regional features. Results showed that the proposed turbine farm comprised of 18 turbines (15–20 m in diameter) with approximately 20% power extraction from the average available power (averaged over five and half tidal cycles) led to local variation of surface elevation within the range of −10 to 3 mm, flow acceleration on both sides of the turbine farm, flow acceleration of ∼ 0.4 m/s near the bed in the vicinity of the turbine farm which caused bed shear stress to rise up to 2.5 N/m2 (corresponding to the critical stress of a range of fine gravel and finer sediment particles), locally increased TKE of 0.09 m2/s2, reduced wave height of 0.01–0.05 m, and upward sediment transport in the water column. On a regional scale, most of the changes on amplitude and phase of M 2 constituent were observed within 10 km (∼ 15 times the array width) from the centre of the turbine farm, and the wake in terms of 95% flow rate recovery was found to be 9 km long (∼ 14 times the array width). Noticeable changes were also found in surface waves, bed shear stress and suspended sediment transport on regional scale as result of moderation in tidal and flow dynamics, although much less prominent than the local effects. It is recommended that consideration during the Environmental Impact Assessment stage of tidal stream energy projects should be given to an area that extends beyond the immediate vicinity of the planned turbine farm. • Detailed study of hydrodynamic and sedimentary impacts of tidal stream energy extraction. • A three-dimensional ocean model with additional terms for tidal turbine simulation is used. • Both local and regional scale impacts are revealed. • Regional scale impacts are less prominent than local scale impacts. • Environmental Impact Assessment of tidal stream energy projects should consider an area beyond the immediate vicinity of the turbine farm. Extraction of energy from tidal streams has the potential to impact on the morphodynamics of areas such as sub-tidal sandbanks via alteration of hydrodynamics. Marine sediment transport is forced by both wave and tidal currents. Past work on tidal stream turbine impacts has largely ignored the contribution of waves. Here, a fully coupled hydrodynamic, spectral wave and sediment transport model is used to assess the importance of including waves in simulations of turbine impact on seabed morphodynamics. Assessment of this is important due to the additional expense of including waves in simulations. Focus is given to a sandbank in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth. It is found that inclusion of wave action alters hydrodynamics, although extent of alteration is dependant of wave direction. Magnitude of sediment transport is increased when waves are included in the simulations and this has implications for morphological and volumetric changes. Volumetric changes are substantially increased when wave action is included: the impact of including waves is greater than the impact of including tidal stream turbines. Therefore it is recommended that at tidal turbine array sites exposed to large swell or wind-seas, waves should be considered for inclusion in simulations of physical impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mud Lake is part of a wildlife refuge located in southeastern Idaho and is operated by a power company to maximize power consumption, while providing for delivery of irrigation flows. Mud Lake is used as a sediment trap for the water flowing from the Bear River into the adjacent Bear Lake. This study explores the use of multivariable relevance vector machine (MVRVM) modeling to predict suspended fine sediment and other water quality constituent concentrations, and their spatial and temporal distribution. In this article, the first of two, we describe an experimental design and data collection program for the observations of water quality constituent data and hydraulic parameters to support creation of the MVRVM model. We briefly describe the MVRVM modeling approach, describe the development of the experimental program and the resulting observations, and finally discuss the suitability of the data to modeling with the MVRVM. Details of the MVRVM model and its application are provided in a second article. Success of the MVRVM will confirm the ability of statistical learning tools to predict sediment concentrations, and will lead the way for scientists to expand the use of the MVRVM for modeling of suspended fine sediment and water quality in other complex natural systems. The development of tidal energy in Australia is still a challenge with few studies performed on the characterisation of the resource, due to the difficulty to acquire data and uncertainties about the influence of this anthropogenic activity on the marine environment. Changes in flow could lead to alterations in sediment transport and have further influence on the marine habitat. A case study in a promising area, Banks Strait (Australia), was created using high resolution 2D and 3D models validated against in situ data to investigate changes to hydrodynamic conditions with two scenarios of tidal farms (100 and 300 turbines). Comparison between 2D and 3D is performed to find the best compromise between model accuracy and computational time for preliminary assessment. Changes to current speed and bed shear stress over a 35 day period were found to be localised around the tidal farms and did not extent more than 7 km from the farm (300 turbines) for both 2D and 3D. The results showed that for near field and far field, 2D models are sufficient to give a first approximation of the hydrodynamic influence of tidal farm deployment on its environment.
