Textbooks determine the way school is experienced and learning realised. Their centrality, however, differs according to the various pedagogical cultures in which they are used. This paper shows how mother-tongue and literature textbooks are used in secondary education in Romania and the way in which they reflect an adequate pedagogy for the cognitive development of students. The Romanian case can stimulate a reflection also on the teaching of language and literature in Italy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
