In this Account, we give an overview of our recent efforts towards the total synthesis of two marine natural products: bryostatin 8 and (–)-exiguolide. The article offers information on "Umweltgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit - Experiment und Perspektive," a conference that focused on the environmental history of Europe during the early modern period. Topics under discussion at the conference included a talk on how rivers act as social borders, an analysis of how rivers such as the Alster, the Unterelbe, and the Ilmenau affected German cities throughout history, as well as the different hydraulic engineering techniques used for the Unterweser river in Germany.

The article presents a report from a March 3-4, 2016 conference in Bochum, Germany on the history of rivers in the Mediterranean ocean region hosted by the Zentrum für Mittelmeerstudien historical society. Topics of presentations delivered included the historical and geographic importance of rivers in southwest Turkey, ship travel in inland northeastern Italy, and the portrayal of the Nile river in medieval travel historiography.

Because of the increased demand for drinking water the Finzenquelle in the Raab gorge was several times centre of geological and hydrogeological investigations during the last decades. The origin of the spring waters was not absolutely cleared. During the construction work of the tapping of the Finzenquelle in November and December 2007 it became clear that the major amount of the spring waters has its origin in the karst aquifer of the Schöckel limestone. A small amount infiltrates from the Raab river into the karst aquifer about 0,4 km in the north of the spring and flows through corrosive extended joints to the Finzenquelle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Up to now Kaplan turbines belong to the high-speed water turbines used for low slope heights from H = 2m to H = 25m and for large volume flows. However, rivers and canals also bear another energy potential, their stream. Up to now there are no suitable water turbines for a specific use of stream energy. Therefore, axial water turbines are calculated and developed. These turbines can be installed mobile without barrage or weir in the river and can then use the energy in the river for the production of electric energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
