The article presents abstracts of research papers presented during Society for Nutrition Education 38th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, on July 23-27, 2005. According to the paper "Understanding Diabetes Self-Care Management Pathways in Low-Income Women With Type 2 Diabetes," type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that requires complex, lifelong, daily decision-making. This qualitative study was conducted to understand the process of diabetes management over time and was guided by Corbin and Strauss's Chronic Illness Trajectory Model. The paper "From "Unconcerned Healthies" to "At-Risk Uncertains": Segmenting Audiences for Nutrition Education to Prevent Obesity," describes obesity as taking center stage as one of the biggest threats to the health and welfare of adults and children alike, not only in the United States but also on a global scale. Consequently, the energy and resources of the public health community are being focused on the issue of obesity prevention and control. In order to plan effective programs and interventions, more information about specific target audience segments is needed.

TURBULENCE , *AERODYNAMICS - Abstract
Abstract: This paper describes and analyzes a series of nearly 90 CFD test cases performed as a contribution to the second Drag Prediction Workshop, held in Orlando, Florida in June 2003. Two configurations are included: DLR-F6 wing-body and wing-body-nacelle-pylon. The ability of CFD to predict the drag, lift, and pitching moment from experiment––including the “delta” arising from the addition of the nacelle and pylon––is assessed. In general, at a fixed angle of attack CFD overpredicts lift, but predicts the ΔCL reasonably well. At low lift levels (CL<0.3), ΔCD is 20–30 drag counts (30–45%) high. At the target lift coefficient of CL=0.5, ΔCD is overpredicted by between 11 and 16 counts. However, the primary contribution of this paper is not so much the assessment of CFD against experiment, but rather a detailed assessment and analysis of CFD variation. The series of test cases are designed to determine the sensitivity/variability of CFD to a variety of factors, including grid, turbulence model, transition, code, and viscous model. Using medium-level grids (6–11 million points) at the target lift coefficient, the maximum variation in drag due to different grids is 5–11 drag counts, due to code is 5–10 counts, due to turbulence model is 7–15 counts, due to transition is 10–11 counts, and due to viscous model is 4–5 counts. Other specific variations are described in the paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

MENTAL illness , *MASS media , *AMERICAN journalism , *CANNIBALISM , *NEWSPAPERS , *DEHUMANIZATION , *SOCIAL history - Abstract
On a steamy May 26, 2012 in Miami, Florida, police officers found Rudy Eugene viciously eating another man's face. Police shot Eugene at least four times, killing him, to stop the attack. Over the next month, the story of the “Causeway Cannibal” (a.k.a. the “Miami Zombie”) fueled debate about what spawned the attack. News explanations included synthetic drugs, cannibalism, Voodoo, and zombies. This textual analysis of immediate news explanations to the attack explores and speculates on why some explanations, such as mental illness, were ignored. By distinguishing between journalistic sensationalism and Ettema's journalistic “imaginative power,” this paper presents possible cultural reasons to explain why news media all but excluded mental illness as a dominant explanation for Eugene's actions. Abstract: A diverse array of spatial optimization models dealing with protection, service, coverage, equity, and risk can potentially aid with the effective placement of critical assets. Protection of assets can be enhanced using the p-dispersion model, which locates facilities to maximize the minimum distance between any two. Dispersion, however, is rarely the only objective for a system of facilities, and the p-dispersion model is known to be difficult to solve. Therefore, this paper analyzes the trade-offs and computational times of four multi-objective models that combine the p-dispersion model with other facility location objectives relevant to siting critical assets, such as the p-median, max-cover, p-center, and p-maxian models. The multi-objective models are tested on a case study of Orlando, Florida. The dispersion/center model produced the most gradual trade-off curve, while the dispersion/maxian trade-off curve had the most pronounced “elbow.” The center and median multi-objective models were far more computationally demanding than the models using max cover and p-maxian. These findings may inform decision-makers and researchers in deciding what type of multi-objective models to use for planning dispersed networks of critical assets. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The purpose of this study is to develop a better understanding of Puerto Rican first- and second-generation youth's migration, identity and adaptation to new lives in the Orlando, Florida, metropolitan area. This qualitative study draws on participant observations, informal conversations, newspaper articles and reports, focus groups and individual interviews with thirty adults and twenty first- and second-generation youth to describe the experiences of these Puerto Rican youth. In the paper I argue that these youth's challenges of identity and incorporation are no different from many of the first- and second-generation youth migrating from other countries. The data show that language barriers, accommodations to home, community, and school, and cultural challenges do exist among first- and second- generation Puerto Rican youth. Yet these youth indicated high levels of academic achievement and social adaptation, and overall felt supported by their families, community and school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper develops and applies a model that locates hydrogen stations to refuel the maximum volume of vehicle flows. Inputs to the model include a road network with average speeds; the origin–destination flow volumes between each origin and destination; a maximum driving range between refueling stops; and the number of stations to build. The Flow-Refueling Location Model maximizes the flow volumes that can be refueled, measured either in number of trips or vehicle-miles traveled. Geographic Information Systems and heuristic algorithms are integrated in a spatial decision support system that researchers can use to develop data, enter assumptions, analyze scenarios, evaluate tradeoffs, and map results. For the Florida Hydrogen Initiative, we used this model to investigate strategies for rolling out an initial refueling infrastructure in Florida at two different scales of analysis: metropolitan Orlando and statewide. By analyzing a variety of scenarios at both scales of analysis, we identify a robust set of stations that perform well under a variety of assumptions, and develop a strategy for phasing in clustered and connecting stations in several stages or tiers. The 12th annual meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco was held February 15–18, 2006, in Orlando, Florida, at the Disney Coronado Springs Hotel. Before the official program started, we were pleased to have two preconference symposia, one focused on the National Cooperative Drug Discovery Groups for Nicotine Addiction and the other on a national forum of how to address tobacco use in health care. The formal scientific program covered all three major areas of the SRNT (preclinical, clinical, and public health/epidemiology research), with many sessions emphasizing an integration across disciplines and levels of analysis. The program benefited from a distinguished keynote address, plenary theme lectures, symposia, oral paper sessions, and poster presentations, all of which played a critical role in the exchange of information at our annual meeting. The meeting was brought to order by SRNT president David Balfour, who provided opening remarks and introduced the 2006 keynote speaker, Robert West. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The spatial and temporal evolution of traffic flow reconstructed for all highways in Florida for hurricane Irma evacuation. • A simplified framework is built to reconstruct evacuation traffic flow based on limited highway camera data. • The data reconstructed could improve survey-based evacuation demand simulators. Hurricane evacuation has long been a difficult problem perplexing local government. Hurricane Irma in 2017 created the most extensive scale of evacuation in Florida's history, involving about 6.5 million people in a mandatory evacuation order and an estimated 4 million evacuation vehicles. Traffic jams emerged in mid-Florida and rapidly spread to involve the entire state. To understand the hurricane evacuation process, the spatial and temporal evolution of the traffic flow is a critical piece of information, but it is usually not fully observed. Based on game theory, this paper employs the available traffic observation of main highways to reconstruct the traffic flow on all highways in Florida during Irma. The reconstructed traffic conditions compare well with those simulated by dynamic models while the reconstruction model is computationally much cheaper to use. Validation with smartphone data further confirms that the reconstruction model captures the traffic conditions for real evacuation processes. The reconstructed data show that the evacuation rates for 5 representative cities -- Key West, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville-- in Florida were about 90.1%, 38.7%, 52.6%, 22.1%, and 7%, respectively. The peak evacuation traffic flows from Tampa and Miami arrived in the Orlando region at almost the same time, triggering the catastrophic congestion through the entire state. Also, the evacuation for Hurricane Irma was greater than that predicted by an evacuation demand model developed based on previous event and survey data. The detailed evacuation traffic flow reanalysis accomplished in this article lays a foundation for studying evacuation demand as well as developing evacuation management policies. Interorganizational collaboration among governments is given great attention in the literature, but systematic investigation of how the perceptions and motivations of local officials influence the configurations of collaborative relationships is conspicuously absent . The dilemma for local actors working on economic development is that cooperation with other jurisdictions provides tremendous potential benefit once it turns out to be successful, but it also poses greater risks than cooperation in most other areas. Thus predispositions and orientation toward cooperation or competition with other jurisdictions can play a critical role in implementing regional collaboration. Extant work assumes cooperation motivates collaboration fails to capture how competitive motivation might also support the emergence of regional governance mechanisms. This paper explores the relationships between competitive/cooperative motivations and interlocal collaboration network based on a network survey conducted in the Orlando metropolitan area. We apply quadratic assignment process QAP matrix regression analysis to examine how dyadic ties of cooperation and competition, along with the effect of community characteristics, affect the structures of policy network for economic development. By comparing estimated coefficient with sampling distribution of coefficients from all the permuted datasets, regression results essentially indicate whether the influences of perceived competition/cooperation on network exchange. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

But most designers, it seems, are taking a wait-and-see attitude about BIM--interested in its benefits, but hesitant to adopt it unless assured of Building information modeling (BIM) is the latest rebranding of a 25-year-old idea that architects should create intelligent 3D models instead of paper drawings to communicate design ideas and guide construction.

Eleven papers were presented at the meeting by several physicians. Physician Caroline Koblenzer spoke on the psychology of sun-exposure and tanning. Despite increasing and convincing evidence that prolonged exposure to the sun accelerates the signs of aging and promotes skin cancer, a review of published studies shows that people continue deliberately to expose themselves to natural and artificial sunlighight in order to tan and often to burn. The fact that knowledge fails to change behavior, suggests powerful psychological motivating forces.
