This article examines the role that material belongings play in displacement processes. Following the evacuation of the housing complex Hannibal II in Dortmund (Germany), the displacement of its 753 tenants, and the conflicts that ensued over the belongings they were forced to leave behind, we ask how the governance of material belongings shapes processes and experiences of displacement. Through an approach that brings in dialogue the cultural and legal significance of material belongings, we focus on the practices governing relationships between subjects, things, and place in displacement processes. Drawing on interviews with tenants, the legal framework governing property and possessions, and the proceedings around the tenants' claims regarding their belongings, the findings disentangle a dual function of material belongings in displacement processes: First, they consider how belongings and their legal governance complicate the temporalities of displacement; second, they examine how the negotiation of the cultural significance of things has an impact on tenants' subjectivities. The paper concludes that in displacement processes, tenants' precarious claims to ownership over their stuff are, at the same time, voicing claims to social and spatial belonging that oppose broader domestic injustices. This paper investigates the relations between displacement, home, trauma and the self in the experience of refugees, which has become an issue of unexpected and far-reaching proportions in recent times. It questions to what extent and under what conditions displacement in the world may be traumatic and how trauma may be considered the effect of an inner displacement. Refugees' lives are marked by forced migration that is related to a certain suffering due to the changes in their family, relational, social and cultural lives. The paper explores the extent to which these changes can represent a break so significant as to be traumatic. It outlines the way in which traumatic experiences can produce an inner displacement and reorganization of one's mental life that leads to a focus on traumatic complexes. Under the most severe traumatic conditions, this can be understood as a displacement of the central axis of Self, in which the ego complex yields its position to other complexes, with a deep change in the organization and functioning of self. The experience of refugees highlights the way in which we live in a matrix of conscious and unconscious links between inner and outer worlds that need deeper and simultaneous consideration to understand their implications and mutual resonances for the psyche. The small body of scholarship that examines the intersection between forced displacement and physical disability draws important attention to the material difficulties simultaneously disabled and displaced people experience. Instead of focusing on disability as a condition lived against the spatial backdrop of forced displacement, this paper approaches disability and displacement as mutually referential spatial conditions. Based on fieldwork with internally displaced landmine victims in Colombia’s Magdalena Medio region, this research highlights how the intersection between physical impairment and forced displacement produces both disabling spatial imaginaries of fear as well as painfully embodied rhythms of daily life. Nonetheless, this paper draws attention to urban agricultural projects’ enabling potential to produce grounding rhythms of labor for landmine victims. Finally, this paper suggests that contexts of forced displacement require close consideration of spatial imaginaries of fear as well as experiences of direct structural violence as key factors underpinning the social production of disability. This paper brings together geographic literature on homelessness and theories of aesthetics to analyse how city beautification projects in contemporary American cities promote the displacement of homelessness. Based on research conducted in Fresno, California, I argue that the seemingly innocuous realm of aesthetics often undergirds anti-homeless politics. In Fresno, officials sought to create a visual landscape that was conducive to middle-class consumption and leisure, such that the project of building a desirable city was deeply influenced by market pressures. In turn, homeless encampments were framed as unpleasant objects that must be removed to make way for economic opportunities. Efforts to reinforce this 'live play work' aesthetic resulted in a politics of displacement and criminalisation. Yet people who resided in encampments championed an alternative aesthetic practice grounded in reuse, survival and collective appropriation of urban space. Thus, the example of Fresno shows that aesthetic norms not only reinforce revanchist politics, but simultaneously present the possibility of resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author, English born and living in Sydney, Australia, presents an argument for the usefulness of the recognition of the implicit simultaneous links between the following: development of psychic skin and the establishment of the body schema development of a sense of identity relationship with place such that the formulation psychic skin< > mind < > body < > self < > place < > world can be thought of as an organising gestalt or implicit continuum of 'skin' experience and process upon which the explicit always depends. This constitutes a taken-for-granted ground-plan of the self-in-place. The author follows this with an exploration of the consequences for psychic health of a traumatic rupture of this gestalt for both individual and group. Material from two cases is presented: first, a young woman whose family fled the Balkan wars which splintered the former Yugoslavia; second, the transmission of displacement trauma into the third generation of a family who arrived in Australia after WW II from the former Yugoslavia. This paper explores and moves toward a way of understanding the emergence of hoarding in the context of unresolved, unprocessed loss. It is argued that hoarding represents in many instances the pain of loss and the pressing, often stubborn, reluctance to accept this, with the hoard being developed as a kind of bulwark against change, transience and parting with lost objects and lost states. The paper is framed within a psychodynamic-psychoanalytic framework, with hoarding considered as a kind of defensive and self-protective manoeuvre, the hoard in part symbolising the lost object and the capacity to hold onto things corresponding to an omnipotent claim to stop the passage of time and to hold at bay the reality of change. This paper specifically considers the theme of loss as it arises in the lives of people who compulsively hoard, considering how the painfully passive experience of loss can stimulate the active and compulsive process of gathering together that we see in hoarding. As well as a displacement of interest from the animate (the person) to the inanimate, we find in hoarding a part-reanimation in fantasy of the lost object in the midst of the hoard. In the late nineteenth century, politically powerful residents of Sydney, Nova Scotia, launched a campaign to remove from King's Road a small Mi'kmaw community that refused to surrender its urban tract and move outside of the city. An Indian Act amendment of 1911 made possible a federal Exchequer Court hearing, which, after gathering testimony from witnesses in support of and opposed to relocation, was empowered to decide the fate of the King's Road Reserve. This paper highlights the court's transcript to explore twentieth-century colonialism as it unfolded in an urban setting. It considers how formative negative stereotypes of First Nations femininity were in the shaping of a colonial policy that assumed that Indians--particularly women--were a detriment to urban progress. The present paper attempts to conceptualize Djebar's progressive struggle and dissatisfaction with the notion of language, identity, and gender. It appropriates the tradition of the “Trickster's techniques of deviating discourses”. In Women of Algiers in their Apartment (1980), So Vast the Prison (1995), and Woman Without Sepulcher (2002), elements of a deviating stance are displayed, hence offering a subversive and conspirational account at the very heart of the oppressive authorities. It will be suggested that Djebar's works implicitly juxtapose comparable models of “Intellectual Trickster” resistance to all kinds of tyrannies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is very important to know which is the optimal composition of the material, how different concentrations affect constituents and how is the optimal degree of participation in alloys used in the manufacture of cylinder liners from internal combustion engines. Mechanical vibrations that occur in the motor mechanism, especially in the cylinder liners, is a principal factor of wear with implications for the functioning of the various components of internal combustion engines used in motor, rail and marine transport. Therefore, to design engines it is necessary to perform a static analysis for cylinder liners to see what is the degree of deformation, so that does not result displacements and mechanical vibrations. These values must be correlated with nodal displacements of the allowed values of engine construction standards or naval classification registry. Internal tension state has an important influence on the wear behavior of cylinder liners. This tension state is generated by mechanical vibrations which cylinder liners is subjected and cavitation bubbles collapse and through its surface [2]. This paper presents a comparison of the two main regional damage estimation methodologies currently in use, namely the modified Mercalli intensity (MMI) based approach and the spectral parameter based approach. In the first methodology, expected damage is related to ground shaking intensity in terms of MMI through damage probability matrices. In the second methodology, the ground motion intensity is described in terms of spectral acceleration (SA), and building response in terms of spectral displacement (SD). Both methodologies were applied to buildings in Vancouver of three different construction types: single-family wood-frame houses, low-rise unreinforced masonry buildings, and high-rise concrete frame structures with concrete shear walls. The two methodologies predict damage that lies in the same general damage categories of light and moderate, which are defined by fairly broad ranges in mean damage factors. The specific mean damage factors predicted by the two methods for a given location are significantly different, however. Drawing on the growing areas of research on emotional embodiment, this paper develops an understanding of the spatiality of grief as central to the discussion of young people's experiences of homelessness. In the context of my engagement with young homeless people in inner-city Sydney, I explore grief as central in shaping young people's everyday body-place relations. I argue that grief over often brutal past homes continues to haunt young people and impact on the ways in which they relate to place, including the place of their own body. I explore young people's displacement and grief-stricken forms of inhabitation as well and their discovery of 'therapeutic' places which allow the re-formation of more positive relations to place and self. I argue that while it is understood that grief and trauma are key causes of homelessness amongst young people, grief is rarely explored as an embodied practice, or as a key factor which continues to underpin trajectories of homelessness after initial exits from home.
