The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is suffering from a substantial decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in exorheic basins, threatening water resources that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. TWS changes are commonly estimated using gravity satellites through observations of the total terrestrial mass storage (TMS) change, with an implicit assumption of a negligible contribution from sediment transport. Through long‐term (2002–2017) sediment flux observations in seven headwater basins on the TP, we reveal that the gravity satellite‐derived TMS has decreased at a rate of 3.85 ± 0.23 Gt yr−1 in the seven basins, of which 0.35 ± 0.04 Gt yr−1 is contributed by sediment transport. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by 10.1 ± 1.3%, equivalent to the annual water demand of an additional 0.62 million people in the surrounding nations. Regionally, the overestimation is surprisingly high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins, reaching up to 50.8%–77.6%. Plain Language Summary: Accurate quantification of the change in the terrestrial water storage (TWS) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is imperative to improve the assessment of water availability that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. Soil erosion poses a significant problem in the Mediterranean region, posing serious threats to the environment and natural resources. The objective of this study is to identify and evaluate the risks associated with gully erosion in the Medjerda watershed in the northeastern part of Algeria. To accomplish this goal, two models were utilized: the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP) and the frequency ratio (FR). Twelve factors that contribute to soil erosion were considered in the study: slope, elevation, distance to streams, land use and land cover, drainage density (DD), topographic wetness index (TWI), rainfall, soil groups, lineament density, soil power index (SPI), sediment transport index (STI), and plan curvature. The results indicate that sediment transport index (STI), rainfall, and slope are the most influential factors in predicting erosion in the Medjerda Basin. To validate the models used, the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) was employed. The AUC values obtained for the FR and F-AHP models were 75.5 and 73.7%, respectively, indicating their excellent accuracy in identifying the erosion susceptibility area. The accuracy ratings of both models demonstrate their outstanding predictive capabilities. Thus, the results of soil erosion susceptibility maps with a better success rate and forecast could be beneficial and effective for implementing various policy measures to safeguard soil. The battering of bedrock by bedload collisions is the primary mechanism by which bedrock rivers erode and landscapes evolve. The energy imparted via impacts acts to detach bedrock via the growth and intersection of surface fractures. We present impact experiments designed to test the influence of particle impact energy on bedrock erosion rates. We found that erosional efficiency increased with increasing impact energy. Notably, these increases in efficiency are not captured by a widely‐used mechanistic bedrock erosion model. Observed increases in erosional efficiency were linked with enhanced elastic energy dissipation captured by differences in the coefficient of restitution. We suggest that this increase in energy dissipation is indicative of enhanced crack extension for high velocity impacts. Our experiments indicate a clear energy‐dependence for bedrock detachment processes that is not yet captured by bedrock incision models but may be integrated into long‐term erosion rates and landscape evolution. Plain Language Summary: Bouncing sediment grains batter the bedrock beds of rivers during floods. As these impacts collide with the bed, they slowly chip away at the riverbed bedrock. It's perhaps intuitive that a grain with more energy when it collides with the riverbed is able to chip away more bedrock. But, how much more destructive are these high energy impacts? We designed an experiment where we hit a bedrock sample with a steel ball at a range of impact energies, over and over again, up to 30,000 times, and measured how much material was chipped away. High energy impacts eroded more material, but this increased efficiency of erosion is not fully captured by impact‐based erosion models. We hypothesize that for higher energy impacts, a larger fraction of the incoming energy is used to crack the bedrock, more easily eroding material. We liken the relative influence of these high energy impacts to a battering ram, where only a few strikes can easily break down a door, whereas lower energy impacts, similar to a simple knock, are unlikely to achieve the same result. We suggest that this effect may be important in determining the influence of extreme events on bedrock erosion over long timescales. Previous studies have demonstrated that vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion rate and reduce the velocity threshold for erosion of non‐cohesive sediment. This study considered whether vegetation‐generated turbulence had a similar influence on natural cohesive sediment. Cores were collected from a black mangrove forest with aboveground biomass and exposed to stepwise increases in velocity. Erosion was recorded through suspended sediment concentration. For the same velocity, cores with pneumatophores had elevated turbulent kinetic energy compared to bare cores without pneumatophores. However, the vegetation‐generated turbulence did not increase bed stress or the rate of resuspension, relative to bare cores. It was hypothesized that the short time‐scale fluctuations associated with vegetation‐generated turbulence were not of sufficient duration to break cohesion between grains, explaining why elevated levels of turbulence associated with the pneumatophores had no impact on the erosion threshold or rate. This study used sediment cores collected from the interior of a mangrove forest to study how the aboveground roots, called pneumatophores, influence hydrodynamic conditions and sediment transport, and in particular the onset and rate of sediment erosion. Individual pneumatophores generate eddies that enhance turbulence, compared to conditions without pneumatophores. In sandy soil, vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion. Nearshore waves, wind, and tidal current mobilize seabed sediments; sort, transport, and redistribute the sediments; and modify the nearshore seabed morphology. Waves play a dominant role in morphological changes among winds, waves, and tidal currents. The nearshore wave breaking induces the initiation of sediment movement, and the associated alongshore current transports a large volume of sediments that tend to either accrete toward or erode from the beach face and seabed. Sediment transport rate in the nearshore waters during cyclones is higher than that under normal conditions. The measured changes due to Cyclone Nivar in November 2020 in the nearshore morphology along the Mahabalipuram coast are examined to understand the response of nearshore morphology to cyclonic wave-induced forcing. The beach-profile measurements across 10 transects at 100 m spacing covering about 1000 m along the coast were measured before and after the passage of Cyclone Nivar as a part of the present field study. The evolving beach profiles during Cyclone Nivar were simulated using the storm-induced beach change (SBEACH) model, which is a cross-shore profile evolution model. The changes due to berm erosion and deposition of nearshore sand bars have been compared from field measurements data and model prediction. The calibrated model was then used to simulate the beach profile response at two other locations along the cyclone-affected coastline to examine the shoreline impact. Mount Meager is a deeply eroded quaternary volcanic complex located in southwestern British Columbia (BC) and is known for its frequent large landslides. In 2010, the south face of Mount Meager collapsed, generating a long-runout debris avalanche that was one of the largest landslides (50 × 106 m3) in Canadian history. Over the past 14 years, the landslide deposit has been reworked by stream action, delivering large amounts of sediment to Lillooet River, just downstream. In this study, we investigate 10 years of geomorphic evolution of the landslide deposit using orthophotos and digital elevation models (DEMs) generated using Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry on aerial photographs acquired during unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveys. The SfM products were used to produce a series of precise maps that highlight the geomorphological changes along the lower Meager Creek within the runout area of the landslide. Comparison of DEMs produced from 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2019 imagery allowed us to calculate deposit volume changes related to erosion, transport, and redeposition of landslide material. We estimate that about 1.1 × 106 m3 of sediment was eroded from the landslide deposit over the period 2015–2019. About 5.2 × 105 m3 of that sediment was redeposited inside the study area. About 5.8 × 105 m3 of sediment, mainly sand, silt, and clay, were exported from the study area and are being carried by Lillooet River towards Pemberton, 40 km from Mount Meager, and farther downstream. These remobilized sediments likely reduce the Lillooet River channel capacity and thus increase flood hazards to the communities of Pemberton and Mount Currie. Our study indicates a landslide persistence in the landscape, with an estimated 47-year half-life decay, suggesting that higher flood hazard conditions related to increased sediment supply may last longer than previously estimated. This study shows the value of using SfM in tandem with historic aerial photographs, UAV photos, and high-resolution satellite imagery for determining sediment budgets in fluvial systems. The Laurentide Ice Sheet's (LIS) interior had a dynamic polythermal base, but the spatiotemporal variations of subglacial processes related to ice divide migration and other transient changes remain largely unknown, limiting our understanding of regional glacial dynamics. Previous studies focused on the regional glacial landform record, while ice sheet models lacked detailed parameterization within these regions, leading to an overestimation of cold-based subglacial conditions' extent and duration. In this study, glacial sediment dispersal patterns as identified by heavy minerals, clasts, and multivariate statistics of till matrix geochemistry were used to assess ice sheet dynamics within the Quebec–Labrador sector of the LIS. The earliest ice-flow phase produced and transported till across the study area (>175 km). However, major oxide data from till matrix geochemistry show a correlation with underlying bedrock, and this relationship is relatively common in areas of thin till cover and resistant bedrock lithologies. These results suggest a switch from an early phase of widespread erosion and long, sustained sediment transport to one of more limited erosion, perhaps abrasion dominant and shorter transport. Till compositional data and related dispersal patterns add supporting evidence to earlier ice sheet reconstructions based on ice-flow indicators and 10Be data together suggesting a transition from widespread uniform warm-based conditions during the earliest ice flow, followed by the development of an ice divide, its migration, and more sporadic warm-based conditions. The 2021 Navalacruz wildfire occurred in a mountainous area in the Sistema Central (Spain). Despite having an average low severity index (dNBR), the loss of vegetation cover associated with the fire was responsible for a high rate of sedimentation in the rivers and streams. Additionally, the burned area affected up to 60 cultural heritage sites, including archaeological and ethnological sites, and damage ranged from burnt pieces of wood to the burial of archaeological sites. In the present work, we document and analyze the post-fire evolution in several rivers and streams. This is based on a field survey of infiltration rates, hydrodynamic modeling, and the study of channel morphological changes. Our analysis revealed how the first post-fire rains caused the mobilization and transport of ashes. This created hydrophobicity in the soils, resulting in large amounts of materials being transported to rivers and streams by subsequent medium- and low-magnitude storms. A hydrological and hydraulic model of the study catchments under pre- and post-fire conditions suggests that these trends are a consequence of a post-fire increase in flow rates for similar rainfall scenarios. In this respect, our estimates point at a significant increase in sediment transport capacities associated with this post-fire increase in flow rates. The combination of locally steep slopes with high-severity fire patches, and a considerable regolith (derived from pre-fire weathering), resulted in a series of cascading responses, such as an exacerbated supply of sand to the drainage network and the triggering of debris flows, followed by erosion and entrenchment. Reliable descriptions of erosion events are foundational to effective frameworks relevant to the fate of tidal landscape evolution. Besides the rhythmic, predictable action of tidal currents, erosion in shallow tidal environments is strongly influenced by the stochastic wave-induced bottom shear stress (BSS), mainly responsible for sediment resuspension on tidal flats. However, the absence of sufficiently long, measured time series of BSS prevents a direct analysis of the combined tide- and wave-driven erosion dynamics and its proper representation in long-term morphodynamic models. Here we test the hypothesis of describing erosion dynamics in shallow tidal environments as a Poisson process by analysing, with the peak-over-threshold theory, the BSS time series computed using a fully coupled, bi-dimensional numerical model. We perform this analysis on the Venice Lagoon, Italy, taking advantage of several historical surveys done in the last 4 centuries, which allow us to investigate the effects of morphological modifications on spatial and temporal erosion patterns. Our analysis suggests that erosion events on intertidal flats can effectively be modelled as a marked Poisson process in different morphological configurations because the interarrival times, durations, and intensities of the over-threshold exceedances are always well described by exponentially distributed random variables. The resulting statistical characterization allows a straightforward computation of morphological indicators, such as the erosion work, and paves the way for a novel synthetic, yet reliable, approach for the long-term morphodynamic modelling of tidal environments. A proper understanding of sediment resuspension and transport processes is key to the morphodynamics of shallow tidal environments. However, a complete spatial and temporal coverage of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) to describe these processes is hardly available, preventing the effective representation of depositional dynamics in long-term modelling approaches. Through aiming to couple erosion and deposition dynamics in a unique synthetic theoretical framework, we here investigate SSC dynamics, following a similar approach to that adopted for erosion. The analysis with the peak-over-threshold theory of SSC time series computed using a fully coupled, bi-dimensional model allows us to identify interarrival times, intensities, and durations of over-threshold events and test the hypothesis of modelling SSC dynamics as a Poisson process. The effects of morphological modifications on spatial and temporal SSC patterns are investigated in the Venice Lagoon, for which several historical configurations in the last 4 centuries are available. Our results show that, similar to erosion events, SSC can be modelled as a marked Poisson process in the intertidal flats for all the analysed morphological lagoon configurations because exponentially distributed random variables describe over-threshold events well. Although erosion and resuspension are intimately intertwined, erosion alone does not suffice to describe also SSC because of the non-local dynamics due to advection and dispersion processes. The statistical characterization of SSC events completes the framework introduced for erosion mechanics, and together, they represent a promising tool to generate synthetic, yet realistic, time series of shear stress and SSC for the long-term modelling of tidal environments. The measurement of cosmogenic nuclide (CN) concentrations in riverine sediment has provided breakthroughs in our understanding of landscape evolution. Yet, linking this detrital CN signal and relief evolution is based on hypotheses that are not easy to verify in the field. Models can be used to explore the statistics of CN concentrations in sediment grains. In this work, we present a coupling between the landscape evolution model Cidre and a model of the CN concentration in distinct grains. These grains are exhumed and detached from the bedrock and then transported in the sediment to the catchment outlet with temporary burials and travel according to the erosion–deposition rates calculated spatially in Cidre. The concentrations of various CNs can be tracked in these grains. Because the CN concentrations are calculated in a limited number of grains, they provide an approximation of the whole CN flux. Therefore, this approach is limited by the number of grains that can be handled in a reasonable computing time. Conversely, it becomes possible to record part of the variability in the erosion–deposition processes by tracking the CN concentrations in distinct grains using a Lagrangian approach. We illustrate the robustness and limitations of this approach by deriving the catchment-average erosion rates from the mean 10Be concentration of grains leaving a synthetic catchment and comparing them with the erosion rates calculated from sediment flux, for different uplift scenarios. We show that the catchment-average erosion rates are approximated to within 5 % uncertainty in most of the cases with a limited number of grains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the influence of bedrock fragmentation by intensive tillage on the hydrological characteristics and soil erosion processes on slopes, two experimental treatments (soil–bedrock mixtures, WB, and pure soil, CK) in steel tanks were subjected to simulated rainfall under five rainfall patterns (constant, increasing, decreasing, decreasing–increasing, and increasing–decreasing) with the same total rainfall of 90 mm. For each rainfall event, runoff and sediment concentration were sampled at regular intervals. The flow velocity (v), effective/critical shear stress (τ/τc), Darcy–Weisbach resistance coefficient (f), unit stream power (p), and soil erodibility factor (Kr) were calculated to analyze the differences in hydrodynamic characteristics between the WB and CK. Our experimental findings show that significant differences in runoff volume and sediment yield were observed among different rainfall patterns and stages. Bedrock fragmenting significantly promoted runoff and sediment production under different rainfall patterns, with runoff volume and sediment yield increasing by averages of 59.29% and 71.62%, respectively. An increasing trend in average contribution rate of bedrock to runoff volume and sediment yield was observed across three distinct intensities: 6.37% and 4.61% for 30 mm h−1, 12.53% and 7.53% for 90 mm h−1, as well as 14.79% and 36.98% for 150 mm h−1, respectively. The v and p values under various rainfall patterns exhibited an increasing trend from the upper to the bottom slope positions, whereas the f and τ values showed an opposite trend, regardless of the WB and CK. Compared with the CK, the v, f, and p values for the WB increased by 23.34% to 48.94%, 1.59% to 53.16%, and 3.86% to 27.86%, respectively, whereas the τ value decreased by 1.52% to 22.19% for varying-intensity rainfall patterns. Among the variable rainfall patterns, the WB significantly increased sediment yield and also had a promoting effect on runoff generation. However, the WB displayed better erosion resistance compared to the CK under constant rainfall patterns. Canyons in carbonate depositional settings, as important elements of the source-to-sink system, remain poorly studied compared to those in siliciclastic depositional environments. The latest high-resolution three-dimensional seismic data, well logs, and core data at the eastern edge of the Precaspian Basin are used to investigate the geomorphology, infillings, and depositional process of a unique carbonate-filled canyon in the Carboniferous KT-II formation parallel to the carbonate platform, which is distinct from other slope-perpendicular canyons. The canyon has a total length of more than 52.3 km with a nearly N-S orientation and an S-shaped geometry, and the whole canyon can be divided into three segments by two knickpoints. The slope-parallel orientation of the canyon is mainly controlled by the palaeogeomorphology and reverse faults. Due to the collision of the Kazakh and European plates in the early-middle Visean (early Carboniferous), the canyon was formed in a northern tilted, elongated, and restricted palaeotopographic feature between uplifts. The development of reverse faults related to tectonic movement controlled the variations in the width of the canyon and the positions of the knickpoints. Tectonics controlled the orientation and formation of the canyon, while sedimentary processes contributed to its infilling. The well-seismic tie analysis indicated two distinct periods of the canyon fillings, Ss1 and Ss2, which were separated by a second-order sequence boundary. The lower part contained sediments supplied by both sides of the canyon through channels or gullies, and the upper part was dominated by a carbonate platform that prograded from the eastern side of the canyon. The evolution of the canyon can be subdivided into three stages. The increasing stage was mainly characterized by significant upslope erosion through headward retrogressive mass failures in the slope-parallel confined negative relief to form the canyon during the lowstand system tract of Ss1. Subsequently, in the early filling stage, the carbonate factory was productive during the highstand, and massive excess carbonate sediments were transported into the adjacent canyon by channels or gullies on both sides and deposited. The canyon was basically filled, and the morphology became much gentler. During the subsequent late filling stage, the carbonate platform was flooded again during the highstand, and the production rates of the carbonate factory greatly increased. Suspended sediment (SS) is a natural component of rivers, but elevated SS concentrations (SSCs) can impact aquatic ecosystems and engineering infrastructures. However, a significant gap remains in predicting SSC dynamics, which are influenced by catchment and climate factors that control sediment erosion, transport and deposition. The research aim is to develop and apply new SS transport dynamics indicators to determine how SSC varies spatially and temporally at a continental scale. Daily SSC data (mg/l) from 1,425 gauging stations in the US were used to calculate indicators of magnitude, frequency and timing (MFT). A filtering approach was applied to calculate frequency indicators that capture SSC events of differing durations. Spatial patterns in indicators were examined and integrated using K-means clustering. High SSC was identified at sites in dry and mountainous regions, but longer-duration SSC events were found in the northern US. The western coastal region and Puerto Rico had consistent timings of high SSC (winter and autumn, respectively). SSC magnitude had a decreasing trend over time across most of the US, but increasing trends were identified for the duration of SSC events. This study aims to document and to elucidate the Jeneberang River delta evolution during 1922 -2022 by analyzing the transport of sediment in and out of the river through erosion and sedimentation. The method used is a geospatial analysis of the delta and river evolution using the Dutch map of 1922 and Landsat long-term data from 1972, 1981, 1991, 2000, 2010, 2020, and 2022 by dividing once every fifty to two years, so the delta pattern changes. The data collection was done by downloading data via Landsat, the data processing was simulated using ArcGIS software, and sedimentation and erosion were estimated. This study shows that the lowest sedimentation occurred in 2002 - 2004 with an area of 6.21 ha, and the highest one in 2004 - 2006 with an area of 34.99 ha. The lowest erosion occurred in 2014-2016 with an area of 1.08 ha, and the highest in 2006 - 2008 with an area of 22.64 ha. The evolution of the delta occurred due to landform and river migrations. Landform migration occurs gradually starting with the direction of migration relative to the north to relative to the west resulting in the formation of a delta landform with an area of 5349.42 ha. Furthermore, the development of the landform no longer leads relatively north to west, but there is still sediment migration due to tides and sediment supply from rivers resulting in a delta landform with an area of 5586.56 ha. Then landform migration is derived from the river sedimentary supply stalled to the north because of water gate construction which caused the concentration of migration lead to the southern estuary. Tides then became a major factor in the migration, but were not as intensive as before with additional formation with an area of 5655.79 ha. The meandering changes or evolution of rivers occur naturally and are influenced by human activities. The emergence of changes is divided into five periods ranging from changes in the meandering direction to the south to the sedimentation and control of erosion with the construction of sluices and reclamation. Based on the study and by using the Galloway classification, Jeneberang delta is classified as an estuarine delta that is predominantly influenced by tides (tide-dominated) during its formation. Glaciers expel sediment as they melt, in addition to ice and water. As a result, changing glacier dynamics and melt produce changes to glacier erosion and sediment discharge, which can impact the landscape surrounding retreating glaciers, as well as communities and ecosystems downstream. Currently, numerical models that transport subglacial sediment on sub-hourly to decadal scales are one-dimensional, usually along a glacier's flow line. Such models have proven useful in describing the formation of glacial landforms, the impact of sediment transport on glacier dynamics, and the interactions among climate, glacier dynamics, and erosion. However, these models omit the two-dimensional spatial distribution of sediment and its impact on sediment connectivity – the movement of sediment between its detachment in source areas and its deposition in sinks. Here, we present a numerical model that fulfills a need for predictive frameworks that describe subglacial sediment discharge in two spatial dimensions (x and y) over time. SUGSET_2D evolves a two-dimensional subglacial till layer in response to bedrock erosion and changing sediment transport conditions. Numerical experiments performed using an idealized alpine glacier illustrate the heterogeneity in sediment transport and bedrock erosion below the glacier. An increase in sediment discharge follows increased glacier melt, as has been documented in field observations and other numerical experiments. We also apply the model to a real alpine glacier, Griesgletscher in the Swiss Alps, where we compare outputs with annual measurements of sediment discharge. SUGSET_2D accurately reproduces the general quantities of sediment discharge and the year-to-year sediment discharge pattern measured at the glacier terminus. The model's ability to match the measured data depends on the tunable sediment grain size parameter, which controls subglacial sediment transport capacity. Smaller grain sizes allow sediment transport to occur in regions of the bed with reduced water flow and channel size, effectively increasing sediment connectivity into the main channels. The model provides the essential components of modeling subglacial sediment discharge on seasonal to decadal timescales and reveals the importance of including spatial heterogeneities in water discharge and sediment transport in both the x and y dimensions in evaluating sediment discharge. Submarine channels conveying sediment gravity flows are often topographically confined, but the effect of confinement width on channel morphodynamics is incompletely understood. We use physical experiments and a reduced-complexity model to investigate the effects of confinement width (B) and the inflow-to-sediment discharge ratio (Qin/Qs) on the evolution of submarine braided channels. The results show that a larger confinement width results in increased active braiding intensity (BIA) and that BIA takes longer to stabilize (i.e., a longer critical time; tc). At a fixed confinement width, a higher Qin/Qs slightly decreases the BIA. Digital elevation models of difference (DoD) of the experiments allow measurement of the morphological active width (Wa) of the submarine channels and the bulk morphological change (Vbulk) within an experiment, defined as the sum of total erosion and deposition. We find that Wa and Vbulk are proportional to B. We further confirm that BIA is proportional to both dimensionless sediment–stream power (ω**) and dimensionless stream power (ω*). These trends are consistent for submarine braided channels both with and without confinement width effects. Furthermore, we built a reduced-complexity model (RCM) that can simulate flow bifurcation and confluence of submarine braided channels. The simulated flow distribution provides reliable predictions of flow depth and sediment transport rate in the experiments. Using kernel density estimation (KDE) to forecast the probability and trends of cross-sectional flow distribution and corresponding BIA under extreme events, we find that skewness of the flow distribution decreases as discharge increases. The development of braided submarine channels, shown here to extend to conditions of topographic confinement, suggests that factors not modeled here (e.g., fine sediment) may be necessary to explain the abundance of single-thread submarine channels in nature. The rate of deformation of the longitudinal profile for a period of half a century in the sediment flow and riverbed morphology has been assessed by comparison of the leveling survey data on the longitudinal profile of a number of lowland rivers in Russia. This problem remains relevant in both the theoretical and practical aspects, especially for rivers in which a range of in-stream mines occupies kilometers and tens of kilometers and they have operated for decades. The removal of a large amount of alluvial material from the sediment transport and changes in the riverbed morphometric characteristics have given impetus to the leveling process of the sediment transport capacity along the river due to scouring. The result is lowering of the bottom and water surface. The scouring reaches 3–8 cm in rate and spreads 400–700 m/yr along the river. Retrogressive erosion (headcutting) is well-defined, whereas progressive erosion is less pronounced, because it is partially replaced by the mechanical removal of alluvial material. Under these deformations, the longitudinal profile has changed from convex or straight to concave, and there are no signs of recovery over the past decades, despite the fact that the mining has been relatively moderate for the past 30 years or has been completed in the rivers under consideration. In the development of water resources projects with large hydraulic infrastructures, alterations to the natural flow regime will increase the erosive processes on the discharge structures due to variability of the turbulent velocities and the particle transport. We analyzed the case of the Mazar dam, a project designed to regulate the solid and liquid flows that come from the Paute river basin. Erosive processes of great magnitude are generated in the stilling basin of Mazar dam, due to the intensity of turbulent velocities produced in extreme events. We applied the Delft3D numerical model to simulate the hydrodynamic and sediment transport conditions to evaluate the stability conditions of the Mazar dam stilling basin. With the results obtained, vulnerable zones have been identified in the stilling basin. Coherence change detection (CCD) is a remote sensing technique used to map phenomena that, under certain conditions, can be directly related to changes in Interferometric SAR (InSAR) coherence. Mapping the areas affected by sediment transport events in arid environments is one of the most common applications of CCD. However, the reliability of these maps remains an unsolved issue. This paper focuses on verifying that InSAR coherence is indeed able to detect all the fluvial sediment transport events that have actually mobilised sediments in arid environments by building a classification model and validating its results. The proposed methodology is tested in three study areas in Salar de Atacama, Chile, using three years of Sentinel data plus a fourth year for validation, and meteorological records of rainfall, the relative humidity of the air and snow cover. The results prove that InSAR coherence can be used to remotely detect sediment transport events related to flash floods in arid environments, that it might have a greater detection ability than meteorological records and that the perpendicular baseline does have a relevant effect on the InSAR coherence that needs to be considered. All these findings will increase the reliability of maps based on InSAR coherence. In addition, the proposed method will allow focusing the mapping tasks only on the relevant dates and, once calibrated, the classification model will enable the automatised remote detection of new events. We describe a framework for the simultaneous estimation of model parameters in a partial differential equation using sparse observations. Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling is used in a Bayesian framework to estimate posterior probability distributions for each parameter. We describe the necessary components of this approach and its broad potential for application in models of unsteady processes. The framework is applied to three case studies, of increasing complexity, from the field of cohesive sediment transport. We demonstrate that the framework can be used to recover posterior distributions for all parameters of interest and the results agree well with independent estimates (where available). We also demonstrate how the framework can be used to compare different model parameterizations and provide information on the covariance between model parameters. Infragravity waves are key components of the hydro‐sedimentary processes in coastal areas, especially during extreme storms. Accurate modeling of coastal erosion and breaching requires consideration of the effects of infragravity waves. Here, we present InWave, a new infragravity wave driver of the Coupled Ocean‐Atmopshere‐Waves‐Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system. InWave computes the spatial and temporal variation of wave energy at the wave group scale and the associated incoming bound infragravity wave. Wave group‐varying forces drive free infragravity wave growth and propagation within the hydrodynamic model of the coupled modeling system, which is the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) in this work. Since ROMS is a three‐dimensional model, this coupling allows for the combined formation of undertow currents and infragravity waves. We verified the coupled InWave‐ROMS with one idealized test case, one laboratory experiment, and one field experiment. The coupled modeling system correctly reproduced the propagation of gravity wave energy with acceptable numerical dissipation. It also captured the transfer of energy from the gravity band to the infragravity band, and within the different infragravity bands in the surf zone, the measured three‐dimensional flow structure, and dune morphological evolution satisfactorily. The idealized case demonstrated that the infragravity wave variance depends on the directional resolution and horizontal grid resolution, which are known challenges with the approach taken here. The addition of InWave to COAWST enables novel investigation of nearshore hydro‐sedimentary dynamics driven by infragravity waves using the strengths of the other modeling components, namely the three‐dimensional nature of ROMS and the sediment transport routines. When wind‐waves of similar periods travel together, they group, resulting in varying wave heights within the groups. Alpine rivers have experienced considerable changes in channel morphology over the last century. Natural factors and human disturbance are the main drivers of changes in channel morphology that modify natural sediment and flow regimes at local, catchment, and regional scales. In glaciated catchments, river sediment loads are likely to increase due to increasing snowmelt and glacier melt runoff, facilitated by climate change. Additionally, channel erosion and depositional dynamics and patterns are influenced by sediment delivery from hillslopes and sediment in the forefields of retreating glaciers. In order to reliably assess the magnitudes of the channel-changing processes and their frequencies due to recent climate change, the investigation period needs to be extended to the last century, ideally back to the end of the Little Ice Age. Moreover, a high temporal resolution is required to account for the history of changes in channel morphology and for better detection and interpretation of related processes. The increasing availability of digitised historical aerial images and advancements in digital photogrammetry provide the basis for reconstructing and assessing the long-term evolution of the surface, in terms of both planimetric mapping and the generation of historical digital elevation models (DEMs). The main issue of current studies is the lack of information over a longer period. Therefore, this study contributes to research on fluvial sediment changes by estimating the sediment balance of a main Alpine river (Fagge) in a glaciated catchment (Kaunertal, Austria) over 19 survey periods from 1953 to 2019. Exploiting the potential of historical multi-temporal DEMs combined with recent topographic data, we quantify 66 years of geomorphic change within the active floodplain, including erosion, deposition, and the amounts of mobilised sediment. Our study focuses on a proglacial river that is undergoing a transition phase, resulting from an extensive glacier retreat of approximately 1.8 km. This has led to the formation of new channel networks and an overall negative cumulative sediment balance for the entire study area. We found that high-magnitude meteorological and hydrological events associated with local glacier retreats have a significant impact on the sediment balance. The gauge record indicates an increase in such events, as well as in runoff and probably in sediment transport capacity. Despite this, the sediment supply has declined in the last decade, which can be attributed to a lower contribution of the lateral moraines coupled to the channel network and less sediment sourced from the melting Gepatsch Glacier as evidenced by roches moutonnées exposed in the current/most recent forefield. Nonetheless, we observed significant erosion in the tributary, leading to the transport of sediment downstream. Overall, this study enhances our understanding of the complexity of sediment dynamics in proglacial rivers across various spatial and temporal scales and their relationship to climate change factors. As sea-level rise (SLR) and human-made interventions affect coastal currents and sediment transport, coastal barriers have become more vulnerable to the effect of storms, hurricanes, and climate variability. The response of each barrier is unique and depends on wave regime, coastline orientation, weather conditions, bathymetry, and type of human-made interventions, among other factors. In the Magdalena River deltaic barrier, located on the Colombian Caribbean coast, coastal erosion has caused the loss of hundreds of square kilometers of critical ecosystems, such as wetlands and lagoons, since the 1960s. This work aims to analyze the short-term drivers behind the observed loss of lagoons, particularly the drivers of lagoon breaching events and subsequent healing along the deltaic barrier. Lagoon breaching events and healings were detected using satellite imagery, and the timing of these events was related to prior local atmospheric, oceanographic, and fluvial conditions. The findings reveal that the dynamics of the lagoons are driven by extreme river discharges and energetic wave conditions associated with storms or hurricanes. Healing is driven by the sediment supplied by littoral currents and average waves punctuated by energetic events. The cumulative effect of breaching and healing has resulted in a deltaic barrier that has rolled over the lagoons, reducing their size over time. Suspended sediment is an integral part of riverine transport and functioning that has been strongly altered during the Anthropocene due to the overwhelming human pressure on soils, sediments, and the water cycle. Understanding the controls of changing suspended sediment in rivers is therefore vital for effective management strategies. Here we present results from a trend analysis of suspended sediments covering 62 monitoring stations along the German waterways (catchment sizes range between 2000 and 160 000 km 2) with more than 440 000 water samples taken between 1990 and 2010. Based on daily monitoring of suspended sediment concentration (SSC), we found significant declines in mean annual SSC and annual suspended sediment loads (SSLs) at 49 of 62 monitoring stations totaling - 0.92 mg L -1 yr -1. At some stations decreases during the 20 years represent up to 50 % of the long-term average SSC. Significant decreases in SSC are associated with declining SSL despite an increase in sheet and rill erosion by almost 150 % derived from modeling due to changes in land use and management as well as rainfall erosivity. The contemporary suspended sediment loads of the Rhine at the German–Dutch border are approaching the natural base level of ∼1 Mt yr -1 , which was reached by the Rhine during the mid-Holocene when the suspended sediment load was adjusted to the Holocene climatic conditions and before the onset of increased loads due to human-induced land use changes in the Rhine catchment. At this point we can only speculate regarding potential reasons for a decline in sediment transport in larger rivers despite erosion increase. Detrital 10Be from continental river sands or submarine sediments has been extensively used to determine the average long-term denudation rates of terrestrial catchments, based on the assumption that the rate of cosmogenic nuclide production by the interaction of source rocks with cosmic radiation balances out the loss of these nuclides by surface denudation. However, the 10Be signal recorded in sediments may be affected at the source by the response time of mountainous catchments to high-frequency forcings. In addition, transient sediment storage in piedmonts, alluvial plains and lakes or near the coast may also induce a difference between the erosive signal and its record in the sedimentary sink. Consequently, a significant part of the signal recorded in shallow-water sediments can be lost, as deep marine sediments may simultaneously record a signal coming from newly eroded source rocks along with one coming from the destabilization of previously deposited sediments. In this paper, we use the landscape evolution model Badlands to simulate erosion, deposition and detrital 10Be transfer from a source-to-sink sedimentary system (the Var River catchment, southern French Alps) over the last 100 kyr. We first compare model-based denudation rates with the ones that would be extracted from the 10Be record of local continental sediments (equivalent to river sands) and from sediments deposited offshore over time in order to examine if this record provides an accurate estimate of continental denudation rates. Then, we examine which conditions (precipitation rate, flexure, ice cover) satisfy published measured river incision rates and 10Be concentration in submarine sediments. Our results, based on the Var catchment cosmic ray exposure dating and modelling indicate that, while river sands do accurately estimate the average denudation rate of continental catchments, this is much less the case for deep submarine sediments. We find that deep-sea sediments have a different and often much smoother 10Be signature than continental ones and record a significant time lag with respect to imposed precipitation rate changes, representing the geomorphological response of the margin. A model which allows us to fit both measured 10Be concentration in marine sediments and river incision rates on land involves an increase in precipitation rates from 0.3 to 0.7 m yr -1 after 20 ka, suggesting more intense precipitation starting at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum. Model-based soil erosion studies have increased in number, given the availability of geodata and the recent technological advances. However, their accuracy remains rather questionable since the scarcity of field records hinders the validation of simulated values. In this context, this study aims to present a method for measuring sediment deposition at a typical Mediterranean catchment (870 ha) in Greece through high spatial resolution field measurements acquired by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) survey. Three-dimensional modeling is considered to be an emerging technique for surface change detection. The UAV-derived point cloud comparison, applying the Structure-from-Motion (SfM) technique at the Platana sediment retention dam test site, quantified annual topsoil change in cm-scale accuracy (0.02–0.03 m), delivering mean sediment yield of 1620 m3 ± 180 m3 or 6.05 t ha−1yr−1 and 3500 m3 ± 194 m3 or 13 t ha−1yr−1 for the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 estimation. Moreover, the widely applied PESERA and RUSLE models estimated the 2020–2021 mean sediment yield at 1.12 t ha−1yr−1 and 3.51 t ha−1yr−1, respectively, while an increase was evident during the 2021–2022 simulation (2.49 t ha−1yr−1 and 3.56 t ha−1yr−1, respectively). Both applications appear to underestimate the net soil loss rate, with RUSLE being closer to the measured results. The difference is mostly attributed to the model's limitation to simulate gully erosion or to a C-factor misinterpretation. To the authors' better knowledge, this study is among the few UAV applications employed to acquire high-accuracy soil loss measurements. The results proved extremely useful in our attempt to measure sediment yield at the cm scale through UAV-SfM and decipher the regional soil erosion and sediment transport pattern, also offering a direct assessment of the retention dams' life expectancy. Past experimental work found that rill erosion occurs mainly during rill formation in response to feedback between rill-flow hydraulics and rill-bed roughness, and that this feedback mechanism shapes rill beds into a succession of step-pool units that self-regulates sediment transport capacity of established rills. The search for clear regularities in the spatial distribution of step-pool units has been stymied by experimental rill-bed profiles exhibiting irregular fluctuating patterns of qualitative behavior. We hypothesized that the succession of step-pool units is governed by nonlinear-deterministic dynamics, which would explain observed irregular fluctuations. We tested this hypothesis with nonlinear time series analysis to reverse-engineer (reconstruct) state-space dynamics from fifteen experimental rill-bed profiles analyzed in previous work. Our results support this hypothesis for rill-bed profiles generated both in a controlled lab (flume) setting and in an in-situ hillside setting. The results provide experimental evidence that rill morphology is shaped endogenously by internal nonlinear hydrologic and soil processes rather than stochastically forced; and set a benchmark guiding specification and testing of new theoretical framings of rill-bed roughness in soil-erosion modeling. The sediment composition of the seabed governs its mobility, hence determining sediment transport and morphological evolution of estuaries and tidal basins. Bed sediments often consist of mixtures of sand and mud, with spatial gradients in the sand/mud content. This study aims at increasing the understanding of processes driving the sediment composition in tidal basins, focusing on depositional processes. We show that bed sediments in the Wadden Sea tend to be either mud‐dominated or sand‐dominated, resulting in a bimodal distribution of the mud content where the two modes represent equilibrium conditions. The equilibria depend primarily on the sediment deposition fluxes, with bimodality originating from the dependence of suspended sand/mud concentrations on the local bed composition. Our analysis shows that bimodality is a phenomenon that is not only specific for the Wadden Sea; it can be expected for a wide range of suspended sediment concentrations and thus also in other systems worldwide. Plain Language Summary: The bottom of coastal seas is often composed of two sediment types, namely sand and mud. The evolution of the seabed, and thus of our coasts, depends on how these sediment types move. A correct representation of the spatial sand‐mud patterns in the bed is therefore essential if we want to understand and predict coastal evolution. Studying a large data set we found that sediment beds tend to be either sandy or muddy, with lower chances of finding something in between (i.e., bimodality). Although segregation of sand and mud has often been attributed to erosion processes, we found that this is mainly the result of depositional processes, and especially of the suspended sediment concentrations. Sand concentrations largely depend on local conditions, while local mud concentrations are much more affected by conditions elsewhere and/or earlier. The difference in the suspended sand and mud concentrations leads to multiple equilibria in the bed composition—resulting in the previously mentioned bimodality—for a very wide range of conditions. This note analyzes for the first time the geomorphology and sedimentary features of the Simpson Submarine Canyon (SSC), located between Chiloé Island and the Taitao Peninsula. For that purpose, multibeam bathymetric data were obtained in 2018. The SSC has a unique orientation compared to most canyons on the Chilean margin. Slope escarpments, topographic irregularities, and sinuosity of the canyon could be associated with regional tectonics. Sediment transport and deposition along the axis define the transversal morphology. On the canyon walls, erosion and transport processes dominate, evidenced by gullies, channels, and mass removals, which leave debris on the axis. We report a large landslide from a canyon wall, which could be due to a highenergy event such as an earthquake; and the generation of a large sediment wave field outside the canyon mouth, indicating a great activity by sedimentary processes. Soil erosion rates after wildfire are strongly controlled by intrinsic properties such as topography, weather, climate, soil, and vegetation. These landscape and hydroclimatic properties are important in determining post-fire erosion rates; however, their influence on post-fire erosion and their interaction with the intensity of a wildfire remains uncertain. A key limitation in resolving this uncertainty is the lack of conceptual models and frameworks for organising data related to the geomorphic sensitivity of landscapes to wildfire. Our aim is to develop a framework for consolidating understanding of post-fire erosion in the context of hydroclimatic conditions which contribute to system states, for example soil and vegetation properties, and wildfire regime. The framework is developed around a simple conceptual model where the change in erosion due to wildfire is a product of change in runoff generation and sediment supply, which is strongly related to landscape net primary productivity (NPP). We hypothesised that geomorphic sensitivity to wildfire should vary as a unimodal humped relationship across a gradient of NPP, peaking at an intermediate level. To develop this framework and to test the hypothesis, we first review intrinsic soil and vegetation properties related to the supply and transport of sediment from burned and unburned hillslopes. Net primary productivity is systematically related to these intrinsic properties because it integrates many processes involved in soil and vegetation development. Empirical data indicate a trend in the change in surface runoff generation with NPP after wildfire, peaking at an NPP of approximately 15 Mg C ha−1 y−1. A simple model of fuel availability and soil heating are correlated with a similar "humped" trend in sediment supply. These results are consistent with our conceptual model, which indicates that sediment supply and runoff contribute towards a distinct peak in wildfire effects on erosion at an intermediate level of NPP. We propose that landscapes of intermediate NPP typically have the highest quantity of fuel available to burn, which cause large changes to the soil surface properties. Landscapes at intermediate NPP also tend to produce intrinsic soil and vegetation properties that promote erosion after wildfire. The interplay between these short and long-term landscape characteristics is strongest at intermediate levels of NPP. Our proposed biogeographic model of geomorphic sensitivity to wildfire was supported by erosion data from burned hillslope and zero-order catchments studies from a range fire-prone landscapes in Australia and North America. We synthesize evidence suggesting a chain of global cause-effect relationships, linking population and economic development with cumulative effects on changes in landscape dynamics, including denudation and sediment transport/deposition. Temporal trends in global patterns of geomorphic processes or process combinations such as denudation, sedimentation, or frequency of geomorphic disasters, appear to reflect growing human pressure. Erosion rates, intensified by anthropogenic factors, are currently one to two orders of magnitude greater than prior to the 20th century, and are growing further. Per capita human transfer of Earth materials has increased tenfold. A considerable increase in the frequency of disasters related to geomorphic processes has also taken place in just over half a century, outpacing changes in other natural disasters. It is especially significant that the ratio between the frequency of geomorphic (implying water/land interaction, obviously influenced by climate change) disasters and frequency of purely climate-related disasters has increased more than ten-fold since the early 20th century. The changes described in geomorphic processes (global geomorphic change) appear to respond mainly to land surface modification, which reflects a "Great Geomorphic Acceleration" after the mid-twentieth century. However, these stressors, characteristic of the "Anthropocene", likely interact with climate change, increasing concerns about future implications for Earth surface dynamics and underscoring the need to not only reduce GHG emissions, but also improve land use practices, which modify the conditions of the terrain. Water erosion poses a significant environmental threat in the Mediterranean region, with pronounced impacts observed throughout Morocco. It impairs soil quality and disrupts both sediment transport and water availability. Contributing factors range from natural (climate, topography, and geology) to anthropogenic (land use, vegetation cover, and management). This study introduces an improved Priority Actions Program/Regional Activity Centre (PAP/RAC) model, enriched with GIS and the Caesium-137 (137Cs) technique, to investigate erosion within Morocco's Raouz basin. Enhanced with additional variables including soil types, slope length, rainfall erosion potential, slope orientation, soil moisture, and land surface temperature, the model transcends the classical approach, promoting granularity and precision in predictions. In addition to the comprehensive model, the 137Cs method, which discerns long-term soil erosion and redistribution, provides a dual-faceted validation, bolstering the robustness of this project's erosion risk evaluation. Glaciers are commonly conceptualized as bodies composed of snow and ice. Yet, many glaciers contain a substantial amount of rock, especially those abutting steep mountains. Mountain slopes erode, depositing rocks on glaciers below. This loose rock (or debris) is buried in glaciers and melts out lower down creating a debris cover. Debris cover reduces ice melt, which changes the shape and movement of glaciers. Glacier movement, specifically basal sliding, efficiently sculpts landscapes. To date, we know little about the impacts of surface debris on conditions below glaciers. To help remedy this, we run numerical model simulations which show that debris‐covered glaciers erode slower than glaciers unaffected by debris. Reduced melt under surface debris lowers sliding speeds and causes sediment to accumulate at the bed, potentially establishing conditions for surging. The influence of surface debris cover on the subglacial environment may hold substantial implications for alpine sediment storage and landscape evolution. In steep landscapes, river incision sets the pace of landscape evolution. Transport of coarse sediment controls incision by evacuating material delivered to river channels by landslides. However, large landslide-derived boulders that impede bedrock erosion are immobile even in major runoff-driven floods. Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) mobilize these boulders and drive incision, yet their role in regional-scale erosion is poorly understood, largely because of their rarity. Here, we find a topographic signature consistent with widespread GLOF erosion in the Nepal Himalaya. Our interpretations emerge from the analysis of normalized channel steepness patterns, knickpoint distributions, and valley wideness. In rivers with glaciated headwaters that generate GLOFs, valleys stay narrow and relatively free of sediment, with bedrock often exposed to erosion. In turn, tributaries to these valleys are steep, allowing less efficient erosional regimes to keep pace with GLOF-driven incision. Where GLOFs are less frequent, valleys are more alluviated and incision stalls. Modeling the dynamics of alluvial rivers is theoretically and numerically more challenging than modeling erosion of bedrock channels in active mountain ranges. As a consequence, the majority of the approaches developed in the context of alluvial rivers are one-dimensional. However, recent advances in the numerics of fluvial landform evolution models allow for two-dimensional simulations of erosion and sediment transport over time spans of several million years. This study aims at finding out fundamental properties of rivers in a tectonically inactive foreland of a mountain range by investigating a simple reference scenario theoretically and numerically. This scenario consists of a mountain range and a foreland in a quasi-steady state wherein the material eroded in the mountain range is routed through the foreland. In order to understand the properties of foreland rivers, a subdivision into two classes – carriers and redistributors – is introduced. Carriers originate in the mountain range and are thus responsible for the large-scale sediment transport to the ocean. In turn, redistributors are rivers whose entire catchment is located in the foreland. Using the concept of carriers and redistributors, it is shown that the drainage network in the foreland permanently reorganizes so that a steady state in the strict sense is impossible. However, the longitudinal profiles of carriers are described well by a steady-state approximation. Their concavity index is considerably greater than that of rivers in the mountain range. Carriers predominantly deposit sediment at high rates, while redistributors erode at much lower rates. Despite the low erosion rates, the sediment flux from redistributors into carriers is a major component of the overall sediment budget and finally the main driver of the highly dynamic behavior of the carriers. Concentrated surface run-off caused by torrential rain leads to the transport of sediments from soil erosion processes within catchment areas of critical points, which represents a basic component of flood risks. Clear identification of such critical points offers a basis for a suitable new strategy of threat mitigation, via both organizational and structural measures in catchment areas. Critical points are determined in places where generated paths of concentrated surface run-off cross given boundaries of built-up areas. The threshold values for the catchment area of a critical point were derived on the basis of hydrological calculations, field research, and the evaluation of hundreds of specific manifestations of damage in built-up areas for particular critical profiles. The characteristics were determined as follows: contributing area between 0.3 and 10 km2, average slope more than 3.5%, and percentage of arable land more than 40%. Indicator F was determined for the distribution of the territory of the Czech Republic according to the risk of flooding. Knowledge of the existence of critical points enables the implementation of preventive measures, the evaluation of flood risk associated with the transport of sediment due to erosion processes, and the improvement of management measures in respective catchment areas, even before an event occurs. The proposed procedure outputs shall be reflected in spatial planning documentation, land consolidation, and catchment area management plans. Incorporation of critical points into open-access public web-maps can help with assessing the semi-quantitative expression of risk to built-up areas arising from the threat of local flooding. The stratigraphic development of foreland basins has mainly been related to surface loading in the adjacent orogens, whereas the control of slab loads on these basins has received much less attention. This has also been the case for interpreting the relationships between the Oligocene to Micoene evolution of the European Alps and the North Alpine foreland basin or Molasse basin. In this trough, periods of rapid subsidence have generally been considered as a response to the growth of the Alpine topography, and thus to the construction of larger surface loads. However, such views conflict with observations where the surface growth in the Alps has been partly decoupled from the subsidence history in the basin. In addition, surface loads alone are not capable of explaining the contrasts in the stratigraphic development particularly between its central and eastern portions. Here, we present an alternative view on the evolution of the Molasse basin. We focus on the time interval between c. 30 and 15 Ma and relate the basin-scale development of this trough to the subduction processes, and thus to the development of slab loads beneath the European Alps. At 30 Ma, the western and central portions of this basin experienced a change from deep marine underfilled (Flysch stage) to overfilled terrestrial conditions (Molasse stage). During this time, however, a deep marine Flysch-type environment prevailed in the eastern part of the basin. This was also the final sedimentary sink as sediment was routed along the topographic axis from the western/central to the eastern part of this trough. We interpret the change from basin underfill to overfill in the western and central basin as a response to oceanic lithosphere slab-breakoff beneath the Central and Western Alps. This is considered to have resulted in a growth of the Alpine topography in these portions of the Alps, an increase in surface erosion and an augmentation in sediment supply to the basin, and thus in the observed change from basin underfill to overfill. In the eastern part of the basin, however, underfilled Flysch-type conditions prevailed until 20 Ma, and subsidence rates were higher than in the western and central parts. We interpret that high subsidence rates in the eastern Molasse occurred in response to slab loads beneath the Eastern Alps, where the subducted oceanic slab remained attached to the European plate and downwarped the plate in the East. Accordingly, in the central and western parts, the growth of the Alpine topography, the increase in sediment flux and the change from basin underfill to overfill most likely reflect the response to slab delamination beneath the Central Alps. In contrast, in the eastern part, the possibly subdued topography in the Eastern Alps, the low sediment flux and the maintenance of a deep marine Flysch-type basin records a situation where the oceanic slab was still attached to the European plate. The situation changed at 20 Ma, when the eastern part of the basin chronicled a change from deep marine (underfilled) to shallow marine and then terrestrial (overfilled conditions). During the same time, subsidence rates in the eastern basin decreased, deformation at the Alpine front came to a halt and sediment supply to the basin increased possibly in response to a growth of the topography in the Eastern Alps. This was also the time when the sediment routing in the basin axis changed from an east-directed sediment dispersal prior to 20 Ma, to a west-oriented sediment transport thereafter and thus to the opposite direction. We relate these changes to the occurrence of oceanic slab breakoff beneath the Eastern Alps, which most likely resulted in a rebound of the plate, a growth of the topography in the Eastern Alps and a larger sediment flux to the eastern portion of the basin. Beneath the Central and Western Alps, however, the continental lithosphere slab remained attached to the European plate, thereby resulting in a continued downwarping of the plate in its central and western portions. This plate downwarping beneath the central and western Molasse together with the rebound of the foreland plate in the East possibly explains the inversion of the drainage direction. Open conduit modeling of cave stream floods can yield useful information about water velocities and shear stresses, which can in turn be used to estimate sediment transport capabilities. All such calculations require roughness coefficients for estimating energy losses and a priori knowledge of either discharge or flow depths to set model boundary conditions. However, the difficulties associated with observing in-cave floods generally preclude measuring discharge; roughness coefficients must be assumed based on channel properties. To overcome these challenges, we monitored stream flow depths in Fullers Cave, Greenbrier County, West Virginia using pressure transducers, and simultaneously measured stage and discharge in a karst window immediately upstream of the cave. Five pressure transducers were deployed opportunistically along a 93-meter-long reach in a 10+ meter high canyon averaging 1.5 to 3 meters wide. Stage-discharge relationships were determined for the karst window using an electromagnetic flow meter for floods with peak discharges of 1.66 m3 s-1 or less. The collected data was used to obtain the empirical Manning's n roughness values, head losses, and energy gradients. Calculated floodwater velocities are comparable to values obtained from scallops on passage walls. Major energy losses were observed where breakdown partially occludes the passage. At peak flow, Manning n values average 0.053 for reaches typified as cobble-floored canyons, but n was 0.069 in the breakdown reach. Roughness values declined exponentially with increasing discharge, but friction slopes calculated using head losses show more complex relationships with discharge. Notably, n values back calculated using bed gradients differ from those calculated using measured head losses by as little as 12%, so the use of bed gradients in roughness estimations will generally yield reasonable approximations of flow conditions. Fullers Cave experiences significantly larger open conduit floods than we observed, so additional work is needed to estimate roughness coefficients for higher discharges. Our empirical roughness coefficients can be applied to similar cave passages in other caves and contexts, including modeling slot canyonlike channels, and our methods demonstrate a technique for measuring hard to obtain data. The addition of data for open conduit conduits significantly expands the range of environments that can be modeled using empirical data beyond pipe-full caves. Bedrock river-gorge incision represents a fundamental landscape-shaping process, but a dearth of observational data at >10 yr timescales impedes understanding of gorge formation. I quantify 102 yr rates and processes of gorge incision using historical records, field observations, and topographic and image analysis of a human-caused bedrock meander cutoff along the North Fork Fortymile River in Alaska (USA). Miners cut off the meander in 1900 CE, abruptly lowering local base level by 6 m and forcing narrowing and steepening of the channel across a knickpoint that rapidly incised upstream. Tectonic quiescence, consistent rock erosivity, and low millennial erosion rates provide ideal boundary conditions for this 102 yr gorge-formation experiment. Initial fast knickpoint propagation (23 m/yr; 1900-1903 CE) slowed (4 m/yr; 1903-1981 CE) to diffusion (1981-2019 CE) as knickpoint slope decreased, yielding an ~350-m-long, 6-m-deep gorge within the pre-1900 CE channel. Today, diffusion dominates incision of a 500-m-long knickzone upstream of the gorge, where sediment transport likely limits ongoing adjustments to the anthropogenic cutoff. Results elucidate channel width, slope, discharge, and sediment dynamics consistent with a gradual transition from detachment- to transport-limited incision in fluvial adjustment to local base-level lowering. Research into sediment provenance identification in Antarctica is emerging as a relevant field of study, providing a unique insight into understanding geomorphological processes in extreme climatic environments. This study focusses on the mechanisms of sediment redistribution in the catchment of the Korabelny Stream, located at the western end of the Bellingshausen Ice Dome on King George Island (Shetland Islands). The catchment area of the stream covers 2.83 km2, with 1.17 km2 under the glacier. Two main sediment sources have been identified: a) the glacierized part, extending along the glacier edge and represented by a complex of moraine deposits lacking protective vegetation cover, along with part of the catchment under the glacier; b) the periglacial part, occupying territory with permafrost and a thin loose cover unevenly protected by early successional vegetation. We combine a tracer-based fingerprinting technique, sediment delivery estimates based on sediment flow connectivity index and geomorphological mapping to quantify the sources contribution to sediment yield. The proportional contribution of the glacierized part was 60–66 % of the total sediment yield based on two independent methods, suggesting the reliability of the results. It is noteworthy that sediment transport from the glacierized part exceeds that from the periglacial part. However, a significant portion of the sediment is redeposited in temporary reservoirs formed along the glacier edge and Lake Mesyats, located in the central part of the Korabelny Stream catchment. The main factor determining sediment yield in the catchment is the water reserves in snow at the beginning of the ablation season. In years when water reserves in snow significantly exceed long-term average values, such as observed in the austral summer of 2014–2015 when study was conducted, sediment yield was low. Sand waves are found on shallow, sandy seabeds throughout the world and their dynamics may pose an imminent threat to offshore construction. Therefore, there is a pressing need to understand bed level dynamics in sand wave areas. These bed level dynamics lead to variations in sand wave shape and migration rate over time. However, these variations cannot be explained with the present-day process-based sand wave models, which all include a purely periodic tidal forcing. To explain these fluctuations a more intricate description of the hydrodynamics is necessary. The aim of this study is to explore the importance of time-varying, non-tidal currents for sand wave dynamics in the North Sea. We adopted the three-dimensional Delft3D-Flexible Mesh model, and were able to reconstruct time-varying, non-tidal currents on top of the periodic tidal forcing, while significantly reducing computation times. The simulated currents and water levels showed a good agreement with in-situ measurements. Compared to the situation with only tidal forcing, the simulated sedimentation and erosion rates were amplified up to 15 times due to time-varying, non-tidal currents. Additionally, periods of net erosion were found at locations in the sand wave transect where tidally forced models only showed net-sedimentation. Secondary airflow occurs when the primary flow interacts with obstacles and other roughness elements such as dense vegetation. It is characterised by the deviation of the wind velocity and direction from the primary flow. Secondary airflow is often manifested as a reversing, separation, horseshoe, or deflection vortex flow, which is fully developed where the curvature of the topography changes abruptly, such as near the crest region of an aeolian dune, the edge of an escarpment, or around buildings. Secondary airflow has been proven to be one of the main driving forces for the formation of obstacle-related bedforms, such as echo dunes, climbing dunes, cliff-top dunes, falling dunes, shadow dunes, foredunes, blowouts, and parabolic dunes. Morphologies of these obstacle-related dunes have been extensively investigated, whereas the factors controlling secondary airflow and their effects on sediment erosion, transport, and deposition have been less mentioned. Here, we review the types and characteristics of secondary airflow and the controlling factors of their patterns, such as the shape and spatial alignment of obstacles and the incident flow angle. We also investigate the effects of these controlling factors on the morphodynamics of obstacle-related bedforms. As confirmed by field observations, the wind-blown sand hazards controlled by the secondary airflow are discussed. Sediment associated carbon and nitrogen loss under rainfall, an important cause of soil quality degradation and water eutrophication, strongly depends on the intrinsic properties of original soil types. Relative to total loss, the transport behaviors of organic carbon and nitrogen among sediment size classes and response to soil types remain poorly understood. The concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and total nitrogen (TN) in different sediment size classes (>1, 0.25–1, 0.10–0.25, and <0.10 mm) and their contributions to total sediment load during rainfall erosion were determined under field plot rainfall simulation (at 90 mm h−1) on three contrasting soil types (Luvisol, Alisol and Ferralsol) with increased aggregate stability. During rainfall erosion, the concentrations of OC and TN in total and different sized sediments decreased first and then reached a steady state. The variability of OC and TN concentrations (coefficient of variations in 4.2–53.1% and 6.6–41.9%) among sediment size classes decreased from Luvisol to Ferralsol. Compared to original soils, sediments exhibited larger C/N ratios for Luvisol, and smaller values for Alisol, indicating the more selective transport of labile organic matter for weaker aggregated soils. Among sediment size classes, fine particles (<0.10 mm) accounted 69–88% of total OC and TN losses for Luvisol, and decreased to 30–39% for Ferralsol; and the main transport mechanisms of sediment associated OC and TN shifting from suspension-saltation (<0.10 mm) to rolling (>0.25 mm) with increased aggregate stability. Among original soil properties, inorganic cementing agents (including amorphous iron oxides and clay minerals) showed closer relationships with sediment OC and TN losses (|r| = 0.61–0.89, p < 0.001) than organic matter properties (|r| = 0.55–0.87, p < 0.001), further implying the important role of soil aggregate stability across soil types. Storms and extremely energetic events may significantly impact the form and structure of beaches, and so cause erosive processes and coastal damages. Efficient management actions require an up-to-date and accurate knowledge of beach morphological changes, with the shoreline position being a good indicator of such changes. This work proposes the use of the open-source Shoreline Analysis and Extraction Tool (SAET) software for the definition of satellite-derived shorelines (SDSs) from L8 and Sentinel-2 imagery to reveal the shoreline position changes at the beaches of the Ebro Delta, NE Spain. Spatial-temporal models (STMs) of shoreline changes enable a characterisation of how the beaches responded to the storms of 2020. In conjunction with wave data, STMs enable an analysis of the erosive response to storm events, as well as a monitoring of subsequent beach recovery in the short and medium term (<1 year). Results show how Storm Gloria (January 2020, Hs max = 7.62 m) acted as a disruptive event and shifting point in the shoreline trend. As a response to that storm, major erosive processes occurred along the delta that caused an average shoreline retreat of 47 m. A progressive recovery during the spring and summer was mainly associated with periods of low wave energy. Nevertheless, by the end of the year a complete recovery had been achieved for about half of the coast, while the other half showed an average erosion of more than 10 m when compared to the pre-storm situation. Quantitative predictions of marine and aeolian sediment transport in the nearshore–beach–dune system are important for designing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in coastal environments. To quantify the impact of the marine-aeolian interactions on shaping NBS, we present a framework coupling three existing process-based models: Delft3D Flexible Mesh, SWAN and AeoLiS. This framework facilitates the continuous exchange of bed levels, water levels and wave properties between numerical models focussing on the aeolian and marine domain. The coupled model is used to simulate the morphodynamic evolution of the Sand Engine mega-nourishment. Results display good agreement with the observed aeolian and marine volumetric developments, showing similar marine-driven erosion from the main peninsula and aeolian-driven infilling of the dune lake. To estimate the magnitude of the interactions between aeolian and marine processes, a comparison between the simulated morphological development by the coupled and stand-alone models was made. This comparison shows that aeolian sediment transport to the foredune, i.e. 214,000 m3 over 5 years, extracts sediment from the marine domain. As a result, the alongshore redistribution of sediment from the main peninsula by marine-driven processes decreased by 70,000 m3, representing 1.7% of the total marine-driven dispersion. From the aeolian perspective, marine-driven deposition and erosion reshape the cross-shore profile, controlling the supply-limited aeolian sediment transport and the magnitude of sediment deposition in the foredunes. In the region with persistent accretion along the Sand Engine's southern flank, a higher than average foredune deposition was predicted due to morphological development of the region where sediment is picked up by aeolian transport. Including these marine processes in the coupled model resulted in an increase of 1.3% in foredune growth in year 1 and up to 6.7% in year 5 along this accretive section. At the northern flank, where the developing lagoon and tidal channel provided increased shelter to the supratidal beach, predicted foredune deposition reduced up to −11.5% over the evaluation period. Our findings show that both aeolian and marine transports impact reshaping the nourished sand, where developments in one domain affect the other. Direct measurements of erosional response to past climate change are scarce, but mid‐latitude landscapes can record how shifts between cold and warm periods altered erosion outside glacial margins. To study hillslope responses to periglaciation, we measured bulk geochemistry and cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al concentrations in colluvium and weathered bedrock in an 18 m regolith core from Bear Meadows, Pennsylvania, ∼100 km south of maximum glacial extent. Using core lithology, cosmogenic nuclide concentrations, and regional 10Be‐derived erosion rates, we show the onset of 100‐Kyr glacial cycles at the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition (1.2–0.7 Ma) instigated multiple periglacial episodes in central Appalachia, increasing erosion rates compared to the relatively warmer Neogene. Our results show the higher efficiency of periglacial versus temperate erosion processes and highlight a pervasive Pleistocene periglacial erosion signal preserved in the 10Be inventory of surface sediments in central Appalachia, where erosion rates are slow enough to integrate previous cold‐climate processes. Plain Language Summary: During ice ages in the past 2.6 million years, mid‐latitude landscapes like central Pennsylvania were shaped by extreme cold and thawing permafrost, conditions that promote fast breakdown and transport of soil. However, the effect of these cold climates and subsequent warming on erosion rates is unclear since we often lack records of hillslope erosion of warm and cold periods. We drilled 18 m through hillslope material emplaced during permafrost thaw and into the underlying weathered bedrock, and measured the concentrations of 10Be and 26Al, two isotopes that serve as tracers of burial timing and erosion rate. The ratio of 26Al/10Be in the oldest permafrost thaw unit indicates the material was deposited about one million years ago, corresponding to a switch to colder glacial periods followed by more abrupt and extreme warming. The concentrations of 10Be in bedrock below the deposits also imply slower erosion rates prior to the onset of glacial‐interglacial cycles. Our results indicate that cold climate processes are more efficient at eroding rock and transporting sediment than temperate processes and help explain patterns in erosion rates across the mid‐Atlantic region measured over different time scales. Sediment management is currently limited by uncertainties in the applicability of existing radionuclide tracers and the effects of urbanization. Here, we use plutonium isotopes (239+240Pu) from weapons‐testing fallout to trace sediment transport across five watersheds in an urbanizing landscape in Kansas, USA. Historic flooding in the region provided an opportunity to assess extreme connectivity of sediment sources. 239+240Pu activity of transported sediment decreased as catchments urbanized, indicating a greater contribution from subsurface bank sediment; Bayesian modeling predicted 50% (8%–80%) bank sourcing in the most rural watershed, which rose to 93% (73%–100%) in the most urban catchment. 239+240Pu activity provides explanatory information on the superposition of sediment sources, which is beyond that given by traditional organic and geochemical tracers that primarily infer vegetative and geologic sourcing, respectively. Our study demonstrates the utility of 239+240Pu as a sediment tracer for managing erosion under anthropogenic change. The susceptibility of soil to erosion increases as humans convert natural landscapes into rural and urban systems. Uncertainties remain regarding how urbanization alters sediment pathways and what tools are appropriate for quantifying this alteration. Radioactive isotopes, generated from nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s, have proven useful in this regard, although the most prominent tracer, for example, cesium, is losing some utility due to a short half‐life and extensive radioactive decay. We suggest that plutonium isotopes, which have longer half‐lives, are a viable option for tracing sediment in modern landscapes. Plutonium results suggest that in rural basins the source of sediment transitions from upland soil during low‐flows to bank material at high‐flows. On the other hand, urban streams always deliver bank sediment, regardless of storm intensity. Our study demonstrates the utility of plutonium as an alternate sediment tracer and highlights how urbanization changes the pathways and mechanisms of fluvial sediment transport. Spatial information on the distribution of erosion areas and sediment transport pathways within agricultural landscapes is limited. Thus, we assess structural sediment connectivity via surface runoff by using a digital elevation model (2 × 2 m2) and RUSLE-based erosion estimates to compute index of connectivity (IC) and sediment delivery estimates. The variables were analyzed within and between two topographically contrasting subcatchments. We found greater spatial variability of IC within a subcatchment than between the subcatchments. The majority of field parcel areas (65%–97%) were structurally connected to adjacent open ditches and streams. Areas with high erosion estimates also tended to be structurally well-connected, both at the pixel (Pearson r = 0.58–0.63) and parcel scale (r = 0.49–0.67). The IC model was not highly sensitive to parameter variations. In contrast, the magnitude of sediment delivery estimates was highly sensitive to parameter variations. However, based on the high rank correlation (Spearman rs > 0.95) between computed sediment delivery estimates, the tool provided consistent information on potentially high sediment delivery areas. More empirical data and dynamic model applications could be applied to improve the accuracy of the estimates. The method provides a feasible tool to generate open data on connectivity. Dune height is an important predictor of impact during a storm event given that taller dunes have a lower likelihood of being overtopped than shorter dunes. However, the temporal dominance of the wave collision regime, wherein volume loss (erosion) from the dune occurs through dune retreat without overtopping, suggests that dune width must also be considered when evaluating the vulnerability of dunes to erosion. We use XBeach, a numerical model that simulates hydrodynamic processes, sediment transport, and morphologic change, to analyze storm-induced dune erosion as a function of dune aspect ratio (i.e., dune height versus dune width) for storms of varying intensity and duration. We find that low aspect ratio (low and wide) dunes lose less volume than high aspect ratio (tall and narrow) dunes during longer and more intense storms when the beach width is controlled for. In managed dune scenarios, where sand fences are used to construct a "fenced" dune seaward of the existing "natural" dune, we find that fenced dunes effectively prevent the natural dune behind them from experiencing any volume loss until the fenced dune is sufficiently eroded, reducing the magnitude of erosion of the natural dune by up to 50 %. We then control for dune morphology to assess volume loss as a function of beach width and confirm that beach width exerts a significant influence on dune erosion; a wide beach offers the greatest protection from erosion in all circumstances while the width of the dune determines how long the dune will last under persistent scarping. These findings suggest that efforts to maintain a wide beach may be effective at protecting coastal communities from dune loss. However, a trade-off may exist in maintaining wide beaches and dunes in that the protection offered in the short-term must be considered in concert with potentially long-term detrimental effects of limiting overwash, a process which is critical to maintaining island elevation as sea level rises.
