The article discusses the life and works of professor Konrad Hayek. His main research interests were the nucleation and growth of metal nanoparticles, surface science and catalytic processes on surfaces. He further made interesting research on heterogeneous catalysis, oxidation and reduction of metal particles. Hayek was born in Merseburg an der Saale, Germany and studied Chemistry at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. He was a founding chairman of the Austrian Catalysis Society.
