The North China Plain (NCP) has a severe water shortage. About 70% groundwater has been exploited for irrigation. Winter wheat – summer maize and pears are typical representative cereal crops and commercial fruit trees in this area, respectively. Water budget for the typical cropland and orchard ecosystems has a significant importance for agricultural production, especially in the NCP. Therefore, evapotranspiration (ET) and water balance were studied in the annual winter wheat – summer maize rotation (cropland) and pear orchard. Latent and sensible heat fluxes were measured by eddy covariance. Annual ET for pear trees was 764 mm and for both crops was 690 mm. The difference of ET between these two ecosystems was about equal to one irrigation. Transpiration was the main loss with the mean proportion of 63% for crops and 76% for pear trees. Wheat growth period is in the dry season and requires much more irrigation than maize. Mainly transpiration (80%) occurred from April through September in the both ecosystems which was also the growing period for pear trees. The annual precipitation was 469 mm and 444 mm in the pear orchard and cropland, respectively, although 80% of it occurred from June to September. Compared with the precipitation, annual mean water deficit was 294 mm for the pear trees and 244 mm for crops. The water shortage was severe in May while surplus water presented in July and August. Energy and ET fluxes were determined by atmospheric demand and the response of plants as controlled by plant phenology and crop selection. As the water shortage situation becomes more serious in the NCP, sustainability of the agricultural ecosystems could be improved by changing crop planting patterns, specifically, increasing the area ratio of maize to pear trees. Excessive use of groundwater in irrigation (mainly for production of winter wheat) in the North China Plain (NCP) has resulted in markedly decreased groundwater levels. Alternative cropping systems may have potential to reduce groundwater use in the region. The APSIM (Agricultural Production System Simulator) farming systems model was used to simulate long-term (1981–2015) water use, net overdraft and crop yield for eight cropping systems. The wheat-maize double cropping system (WW–SM) in the study area resulted in overdrafts of 258 mm yr − 1 , about 100 mm yr − 1 more than estimated groundwater recharge. Although six of eight simulated systems reduced overdrafts below the estimated recharge value of 150 mm yr − 1 , a triple-cropping system consisting of winter wheat/summer maize followed by fallow and early maize (WW–SM/F–EM) in two years appears to be the most viable alternative. Annual grain yield under the triple cropping system was only 13% less than that under the current WW–SM double cropping system. Groundwater overdrafts under triple-cropping system were about equal to lateral recharge from the mountains, water brought in via the South-North Water Transfer (SNWT) project and water from other water-saving measures (e.g. plastic film mulching) in the region. Changes in field management and climate will alter soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (SN) cycling in the coming decades. This study is to quantify the effects of various fertilisation strategies and climate change scenarios on crop yield, and soil C and N cycling by the end of this century. Data from a long-term experiment with a winter-wheat ( Triticum aestivium L.) and summer maize ( Zea mays L.) rotation in Northern China was used to calibrate and validate the SPACSYS model. Five fertiliser practices were used: control (CK); combined mineral nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK); NPK plus manure (NPKM); high application rate of NPK fertilisers plus manure (hNPKM) and NPK with straw incorporation (NPKS). Crop yields, and SOC and SN stocks by 2100 were predicted under four climate scenarios (Baseline, RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP4.5). Results showed that the SPACSYS model can adequately simulate the dynamics of SOC and SN stocks and the yields of winter wheat and summer maize. An application of NPK plus manure or straw not only enhanced crop yield, but also substantially increased SOC and SN stocks. The predictions showed the positive effects of fertilisation and climate change on crop yields and SOC stocks compared with those under the baseline. However, SN stock under the RCP8.5 decreased by 3–14% by 2100 for various fertilisation strategies compared with that under the baseline. On the other hand, mineral fertiliser plus manure led to a higher soil respiration rate and nitrogen losses through leaching and surface runoff under all the climate scenarios. Therefore, application of mineral fertilisers plus manure could enhance crop productivity and sustain soil fertility but cause more carbon emitted to the atmosphere and nitrogen losses. Groundwater levels in the North China Plain (NCP), the bread basket of China, have dropped more than one meter per year over the last 40 years, putting at risk the long term productivity of this region. Groundwater decline is most severe in the Alluvial Fans where our study site is located. Avoiding a foreseeable systems collapse requires region-wide changes in crop systems management, underpinned by sound environmental policies. Here, we explore the potential of crop system adaptation to remedy the excessive water use and quantify the likely yield penalties associated with more sustainable water use practices. Using simulations with the APSIM cropping systems model we explore production opportunities in an area within the NCP with intensive cropping and no access to irrigation from rivers. We estimate the attainable production levels for wheat and maize if agriculture were made groundwater neutral, through changes in crop sequence, irrigation practices and water conservation technologies (e.g. mulching with plastic film). Total grain production would drop by 44% compared to current practice if agriculture were made groundwater neutral. Water conservation by plastic film could limit this reduction to 21–33% but possible environmental impacts of plastic film need attention. This analysis facilitates a much needed debate on alternative agronomic practices and incentives through a quantitative comparison of adaptation options. Our biophysical analysis needs to be complemented with socio-economic considerations and discussions with all stakeholders. As an important agricultural production region in China, the North China Plain (NCP) is an ecologically vulnerable region that frequently is hit by drought. Faced with drought and other extreme climate events, policy makers have given top priority to the formulation and implementation of adaptation policies. This paper assessed the effectiveness of adaptation policies, including the provision of early warning information and policy supports, on farmers’ adaptive decisions regarding the planting of the wheat crop in the NCP. Based on a unique dataset from a large-scale village and farm survey in five provinces in the NCP, an econometric model of farmers’ adaptation practices is estimated. Results show that when faced with a more severe drought, farmers change their management practices to mitigate its effects by adjusting seeding or harvesting dates and enhancing irrigation intensity. The provisions of early warning and prevention information and policy supports against drought facilitate farmers to make farm management adaptations. However, the effectiveness of early warning and prevention information or policy supports differs by their provision channels or types. The findings of this study have policy implications in coping with the rising frequency and seriousness of extreme weather events in China as a whole and in ecologically more vulnerable NCP in particular. The North China Plain (NCP) is one of the main grain production regions in China. However, the annual double cropping system of winter wheat and maize consumed a large amount of groundwater, has led to decline in groundwater table. For conservation of groundwater resource, deficit irrigation is promoted to reduce irrigation water use in recent years. This study combined process-based modeling and experimental data together to evaluate the effects of different irrigation strategies on crop production and groundwater table change for the past three decades in NCP. Data from a six year field trial (2006–2012) under four irrigation schedules and 28 year (1984–2012) field experiment under full irrigation was used to test the agricultural production systems simulator (APSIM) to simulate the responses of winter wheat and maize to different irrigation management. The results showed that APSIM model could well simulate the grain yield and water consumption of the double cropping system under the changing climate and management practices. Simulation results with four irrigation scenarios (critical stage irrigation (CI), minimum irrigation (MI), rainfed (RF) and full irrigation (FI)) from 1984 to 2012 showed that irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) was highest under CI, although changing from FI would lead to reduction in average annual grain yield by 19.5%, 33.7%, and 58.8% under CI, MI and RF, respectively. Even the minimum irrigation strategy (MI—one irrigation for each crop) will result in continuous decline in the groundwater table, implying an inevitable future shift to alternative cropping systems like dryland wheat-maize system, single wheat or maize. Such change will likely result in lower crop productivity and increased inter-annual variability in crop yields, which will demand improved risk management strategies to minimize loss in bad year while maximize return in good years. This study aimed to identify whether nitrogen (N) use efficiency in a summer-maize/winter-wheat double-cropping system of the North China Plain (NCP) could be increased by adjusting N supply to crop N demand, and through the use of alternate N fertilizers and application strategies. In a static experiment conducted on a farmers’ field six reduced N treatments were compared to farmers’ practice (FP: 550 kg (N) ha −1 a −1 ) and a control treatment (CK). With few exceptions of single treatments in single cropping-seasons, the optimized fertilization of N did not lead to a yield reduction of either summer-maize or winter-wheat. The grain yield of summer-maize ranged between 5.8 and 7.1 Mg ha −1 . The grain yield of wheat ranged between 4.4 and 6.2 Mg ha −1 . For the first two vegetation periods of summer-maize, the recovery efficiency (RE N : 0.09–0.30 kg kg −1 ) and agronomic efficiency of N (AE N ) were mainly affected by the yield achieved in the control treatment (5.7 and 5.9 Mg ha −1 ), which was not significantly reduced compared to most fertilized treatments. In the third vegetation period of summer-maize, an increase of RE N of the reduced treatments (0.37–0.58 kg kg −1 ) was determined compared to FP (0.21 kg kg −1 ). In both vegetation periods of wheat RE N of the reduced treatments (0.34–1.0 kg kg −1 ) was significantly higher compared to FP (0.26 and 0.27 kg kg −1 ). The highest cumulated AE N , as well as cumulated grain yields were observed when ammonium sulphate nitrate + 3,4-dimethylpyrazolephosphate (ASN DMPP ) was applied according to crop N demand and residual soil mineral N. The highest RE N was observed when urea ammonium nitrate was applied in a shallow, banded depot (UAN DEP ). This research demonstrates that N application rates in a maize/wheat double cropping system may be significantly reduced compared to common farmers’ practice, without negatively affecting grain yield, thereby increasing N use efficiency. The aim of the study is to analyze the effects of different fertilization of organic and inorganic fertilizers on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and crop yields after a 22 years long-term field experiment. The crop yields and SOC were investigated from 1981 to 2003 in Dry-Land Farming Research Institute of Hebei Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Hebei Province, China. The dominant cropping systems are winter wheat–summer corn rotation. There were totally sixteen treatments applied to both wheat and corn seasons: inorganic fertilizers as main plots and corn stalks as subplots and the main plots and subplots all have four levels. The results revealed: after 22 years, mixed application of inorganic fertilizers and crop residuals, the SOC and crop yields substantially increased. Higher fertilizer application rates resulted in greater crop yields improvement. In 2002–2003, wheat and corn for the highest fertilizer inputs had the highest yield level, 6400 kg ha −1 and 8600 kg ha −1 , respectively. However, the SOC decreased as the excessive inorganic fertilizer input and increased with the rising application of corn stalks. The treatment of the second-highest inorganic fertilizer and the highest corn stalks had the highest SOC concentration (8.64 g C kg −1 ). Pearson correlation analysis shows that corn and winter wheat yields and the mineralization amount of SOC have significant correlation with SOC at p < 0.05 level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sustainable development of agriculture in the North China Plain is severely restricted by a shortage of fresh water. Saline water used for irrigation can increase crop yields as well as the risk of soil salinization. Therefore, to identify safe and simple ways of using saline water in this region, field experiments were conducted from 2011 to 2013 to evaluate the effect of irrigation volume and water salinity on winter wheat productivity and soil salinity distribution. A total of twelve treatments including four levels of irrigation volume (0.8 E , 1.0 E , 1.2 E and 1.4 E ) and three levels of water salinity (3.3, 5, and 6.8 dS m −1 ) (S1, S2 and S3), were arranged in a randomized split-plot design with three replicates of each treatment. E is the total net pan evaporation that occurred after the irrigation. The results indicated that soil salinity increased at the harvest time of winter wheat under all of the treatments compared with initial conditions, particularly in the upper soil layers (0–40 cm). However, these impacts were eliminated by rainfall in summer and autumn. The effect of irrigation water salinity on yield was significant in the 2011/2012 growing season and non-significant in the 2012/2013 growing season ( p < 0.05). Quadratic relationships were found between grain yield and irrigation volume for three water salinity levels in both growing seasons. The effects of irrigation volume on total water use (TWU), water productivity (WP) and irrigation water productivity (WP irrig ) were significant. The interaction effects of irrigation volume and water salinity on grain yield, TWU, WP, WP irrig and soil salinity were statistically non-significant. The optimal irrigation volume per application was 0.98 E , 0.98 E and 0.92 E for water salinities of S1, S2 and S3, respectively, by which more than 96% of the maximum yield and WP can be achieved. Abstract: A process-based ecosystem model (Vegetation–atmosphere Interface Processes (VIP) model) is expanded, and then validated against three years’ biometric, soil moisture and eddy-covariance fluxes data over a winter wheat–summer maize cropping system in the North China Plain (NCP). The results show that the model is capable of simulating satisfactorily the evolution of crop biomass, phenological development and soil moisture. The computed 30-min estimates of CO2, water and heat fluxes agree well with the eddy-covariance measurements. At daily scale, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of net radiation, latent heat flux and net ecosystem productivity (NEP) are 1.0MJm−2 day−1, 1.8MJm−2 day−1 and 2.6gCm−2 day−1, respectively. However, systematic errors in sensible heat flux estimates are identified in times of season when daily sensible heat flux is negative due to the horizontal advection. Annually, about 55% of evapotranspiration (ET) is emanated from winter wheat and 45% from maize. The annual NEP varies noticeably, with relative biases of 18, 9 and −29% in each year from 2003 to 2005, respectively. Sensitivity analysis illustrates that ET is quite sensitive to soil resistance parameters contributing to soil evaporation, and NEP to quantum efficiency of photosynthesis. The uncertainties of annual ET and NEP are 16.5% and 35.6% respectively when the key parameters are randomly sampled in their uncertainty ranges. Errors on eddy-covariance measurements and uncertainty on the model parameters may partly explain the discrepancy between the simulations and the measurements. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Nitrogen amendment followed by flooding irrigation is a general management practice for a wheat–maize rotation in the North China Plain, which may favor nitrification and denitrification. Consequently, high emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) are hypothesized to occur. To test this hypothesis, we performed year-round field measurements of N2O and NO fluxes from irrigated wheat–maize fields on a calcareous soil applied with all crop residues using a static, opaque chamber measuring system. To interpret the field data, laboratory experiments using intact soil cores with added carbon (glucose) and nitrogen (nitrate, ammonium) substrates were performed. Our field measurements showed that pulse emissions after fertilization and irrigation/rainfall contributed to 73% and 88% of the annual N2O and NO emissions, respectively. Soil moisture and mineral nitrogen contents significantly affected the emissions of both gases. Annual emissions from fields fertilized at the conventional rate (600 kg N ha−1 yr−1) totaled 4.0 ± 0.2 and 3.0 ± 0.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1 for N2O and NO, respectively, while those from unfertilized fields were much lower (0.5 ± 0.02 kg N ha−1 yr−1 and 0.4 ± 0.05 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively). Direct emission factors (EFds) of N2O and NO for the fertilizer nitrogen were estimated to be 0.59 ± 0.04% and 0.44 ± 0.04%, respectively. By summarizing the results of our study and others, we recommended specific EFds (N2O: 0.54 ± 0.09%; NO: 0.45 ± 0.04%) for estimating emissions from irrigated croplands on calcareous soils with organic carbon ranging from 5 to 16 g kg−1. Nitrification dominated the processes driving the emissions of both gases following fertilization. It was evident that insufficient available carbon limited microbial denitrification and thus N2O emission. This implicates that efforts to enhance carbon sink in calcareous soils likely increase their N2O emissions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The North China Plain (NCP) is one of the main productive regions for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and summer maize (Zea mays L.) in China. However, water-saving irrigation technologies (WSITs), such as sprinkler irrigation technology and improved surface irrigation technology, and water management practices, such as irrigation scheduling have been adopted to improve field-level water use efficiency especially in winter wheat growing season, due to the water scarcity and continuous increase of water in industry and domestic life in the NCP. As one of the WSITs, sprinkler irrigation has been increasingly used in the NCP during the past 20 years. In this paper, a three-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the responses of volumetric soil water content (SWC), winter wheat yield, evapotranspiration (ET), water use efficiency (WUE) and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) to sprinkler irrigation regimes based on the evaporation from an uncovered, 20-cm diameter pan located 0–5cm above the crop canopy in order to develop an appropriate sprinkler irrigation scheduling for winter wheat in the NCP. Results indicated that the temporal variations in SWC for irrigation treatments in the 0–60-cm soil layer were considerably larger than what occurred at deeper depths, whereas temporal variations in SWC for non-irrigation treatments were large throughout the 0–120-cm soil layer. Crop leaf area index, dry biomass, 1000-grains weight and yield were negatively affected by water stress for those treatments with irrigation depth less than 0.50E, where E is the net evaporation (which includes rainfall) from the 20-cm diameter pan. While irrigation with a depth over 1.0E also had negative effect on 1000-grains weight and yield. The seasonal ET of winter wheat was in a range of 206–499mm during the three years experiments. Relatively high yield, WUE and IWUE were found for the irrigation depth of 0.63E. Therefore, for winter wheat in the NCP the recommended amount of irrigation to apply for each event is the total 0.63E that occurred after the previous irrigation provided total E is in a range of 30–40mm. Abstract: In the North China Plain (NCP), while irrigation using groundwater has maintained a high-level crop productivity of the wheat–maize double cropping systems, it has resulted in rapid depletion of groundwater table. For more efficient and sustainable utilization of the limited water resources, improved understanding of how crop productivity and water balance components respond to climate variations and irrigation is essential. This paper investigates such responses using a modelling approach. The farming systems model APSIM (Agricultural Production Systems Simulator) was first calibrated and validated using 3 years of experimental data. The validated model was then applied to simulate crop yield and field water balance of the wheat–maize rotation in the NCP. Simulated dryland crop yield ranged from 0 to 4.5tha−1 for wheat and 0 to 5.0tha−1 for maize. Increasing irrigation amount led to increased crop yield, but irrigation required to obtain maximum water productivity (WP) was much less than that required to obtain maximum crop yield. To meet crop water demand, a wide range of irrigation water supply would be needed due to the inter-annual climate variations. The range was simulated to be 140–420mm for wheat, and 0–170mm for maize. Such levels of irrigation applications could potentially lead to about 1.5myear−1 decline in groundwater table when other sources of groundwater recharge were not considered. To achieve maximum WP, one, two and three irrigations (i.e., 70, 150 and 200mmseason−1) were recommended for wheat in wet, medium and dry seasons, respectively. For maize, one irrigation and two irrigations (i.e., 60 and 110mmseason−1) were recommended in medium and dry seasons, while no irrigation was needed in wet season. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Plant water status is a key factor impacting crop growth and agricultural water management. Crop water stress may alter canopy temperature, the energy balance, transpiration, photosynthesis, canopy water use efficiency, and crop yield. The objective of this study was to calculate the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) from canopy temperature and energy balance measurements and evaluate the utility of CWSI to quantify water stress by comparing CWSI to latent heat and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux measurements over canopies of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and summer maize (Zea mays L.). The experiment was conducted at the Yucheng Integrated Agricultural Experimental Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2003 to 2005. Latent heat and CO2 fluxes (by eddy covariance), canopy and air temperature, relative humidity, net radiation, wind speed, and soil heat flux were averaged at half-hour intervals. Leaf area index and crop height were measured every 7 days. CWSI was calculated from measured canopy-air temperature differences using the Jackson method. Under high net radiation conditions (greater than 500Wm−2), calculated values of minimum canopy-air temperature differences were similar to previously published empirically determined non-water-stressed baselines. Valid measures of CWSI were only obtained when canopy closure minimized the influence of viewed soil on infrared canopy temperature measurements (leaf area index was greater than 2.5m2 m−2). Wheat and maize latent heat flux and canopy CO2 flux generally decreased linearly with increases in CWSI when net radiation levels were greater than 300Wm−2. The responses of latent heat flux and CO2 flux to CWSI did not demonstrate a consistent relationship in wheat that would recommend it as a reliable water stress quantification tool. The responses of latent heat flux and CO2 flux to CWSI were more consistent in maize, suggesting that CWSI could be useful in identifying and quantifying water stress conditions when net radiation was greater than 300Wm−2. The results suggest that CWSI calculated by the Jackson method under varying solar radiation and wind speed conditions may be used for irrigation scheduling and agricultural water management of maize in irrigated agricultural regions, such as the North China Plain. Abstract: Competing demands for water with increasing population calls for developing strategies for increasing the crop water use efficiency (WUE) of irrigated crops, especially in the semiarid regions of the world. In this context, it is important to quantify the various factors that control the WUE of irrigated crops in these regions. Advection is an important factor that can have significant effects on the energy exchange in irrigated fields of arid regions, and hence control the crop canopy WUE (CWUE). An eddy covariance system was applied to measure water and heat fluxes and then to quantify advection in an irrigated winter wheat filed at the Yucheng Integrated Experiment Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences in the North China Plain (NCP) (36°57′N, 116°36′E, 28m a.s.l.) in 2004. Priestley–Taylor parameter and canopy–air temperature differences were employed to identify the occurrence of advection. Effects of advection on canopy energy budgets and CWUE were examined by computing the equilibrium and advective evapotranspiration. It was found that enhanced advection occurs when the crop canopy–air temperature differences are negative or when the Priestley–Taylor parameter takes on values >1.5. Due to enhanced advection, the percentage of latent and sensible heat flux exchange contribution to the total water loss from the fields through evapotranspiration can exceed 50%, and CWUE decreased remarkably.
