As wastewater is commonly disposed of in the form of sediment-laden jet from a submarine outfall, the sediment movement when the jet evolves in the ambient water and its final deposition are of great importance to marine engineers. This study aims to investigate the settling mechanism of the sediment from an inclined discharge nozzle and quantify the deposition profile for various jet conditions in the hydrostatic environment through physical experiments and dimensional analysis. In the experimental tests, separate flow visualizations for the fluid and sediment phases are achieved to enable the simultaneous observation of sediment particles and jet fluid movement, through which the analysis of the relationship between the fluid and the sediment movement is carried out. The results show that at locations close to the nozzle (s / D = 5), sediment mean velocity has an inverse relationship with the turbulence intensity while positively correlated with the initial jet momentum. The discharge angle is found to have dominant effect on alternating the sediment velocity profile from symmetrical to asymmetrical. With the newly defined momentum settling length scale l mi , the non-dimensional formulations for deposition rate and accumulated deposition profile involving the nozzle inclination have been validated by the experimental data and are potential to be applied to the prediction of depositional rate and final deposition distribution near the outfall for the full-scale wastewater discharge events. • Fluid and sediment phases are simultaneously observed for the sediment-laden jet. • Increase of inclined discharge angle enhances the asymmetry of sediment velocity profile. • A new momentum settling length scales l mi is introduced. • Uniform equation is achieved to describe the 1D deposition profile at the bottom. The erosion, transport and fate of sediments and associated contaminants are known to be influenced by both particle characteristics and the flow dynamics imparted onto the sediment. The influential role of bitumen containing hydrophobic sediments and the microbial community on sediment dynamics are however less understood. This study links an experimental evaluation of sediment erosion with measured sediment-associated contaminant concentrations and microbial community analysis to provide an estimate of the potential for sediment to control the erosion, transport and fate of contaminants. Specifically the paper addresses the unique behaviour of hydrophobic sediments and the role that the microbial community associated with hydrophobic sediment may play in the transport of contaminated sediment. Results demonstrate that the hydrophobic cohesive sediment demonstrates unique transport and particle characteristics (poor settling and small floc size). Biofilms were observed to increase with consolidation/biostabilization times and generated a unique microbial consortium relative to the eroded flocs. Natural oil associated with the flocs appeared to be preferentially associated with microbial derived extracellular polymeric substances. While PAHs and naphthenic acid increased with increasing shear (indicative of increasing loads), they tended to decrease with consolidation/biostabilization (CB) time at similar shears suggesting a chemical and/or biological degradation. PAH and napthenic acid degrading microbes decreased with time as well, which may suggest that there was a reduced pool of PAHs and naphthenic acids available resulting in their die off. This study emphasizes the importance that any management strategies and operational assessments for the protection of human and aquatic health incorporate the sediment (suspended and bed sediment) and biological (biofilm) compartments and the energy dynamics within the system in order to better predict contaminant transport. The new toolbox ScourApp is presented and applied for analysis of the complex interactions between local scour and sediment deposition at bridges during floods and to determine the relative importance of the controlling parameters on scour depth. ScourApp represents the time-dependent sediment transport processes through modern empirical formulations to compute the evolution of scour depth at a bridge pier. Results show that the mathematical model reproduces observed scour depths with high accuracy and confirm that ScourApp is a suitable tool for scour analysis. The model parameters controlling the time dependent scour depth were the equilibrium scour depth, and two constants representing the effects of pier geometry, flow and sediment. Sensitivity analysis showed that all three scour model parameters exhibited a nearly linear relation with the final scour depth. Moreover, results considering sediment deposition obtained for the Rapel Bridge showed that scour depths are highly sensitive to the sediment supply rate. ScourApp is recommended in scour assessment for bridge planning, design, management, and forensic analysis, as well as for engineering education. • The open-source toolbox ScourApp for scour analysis is developed. • Complex interactions of time-dependent scour and scour hole refilling are analysed for several laboratory and real-life cases. • The relative importance of controlling parameters on scour is analysed. Microplastics (MPs) are globally ubiquitous in sediments and surface waters. Interactions between biota and MPs are complex and influence their fate and effects in the environment. Once MPs enter aquatic systems, they are colonized by biofilms that may form from the excretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from microalgae. Biofilm accumulation may change the density of the MPs, contributing to their transport to the sediments. Furthermore, benthic plantivores may consume biofilm laden MPs allowing them to enter the food web. Thus, it is crucial to understand the role algae plays in the vertical transport of MPs in the aquatic environment. In this study, Chlamydomonas was cultured with MPs at different concentrations (0–0.4 mg/mL), and temperatures ranging from 2.5 to 32.5 °C to understand the deposition dynamics and impacts of MPs on EPS production and algal density. Temperatures ranging up to 25 °C increased algal density and MPs deposition. However, at 32.5 °C, algal density and MPs deposition declined. The quantity of MPs also affected algal cell density and EPS production. MPs concentration from 0 to 0.4 mg/mL increased EPS production at all temperatures. Similarly, an increase in algal cell density and MPs deposition occurred when MPs concentration was raised to 0.3 mg/mL. Algal cultures exposed to 0.3–0.4 mg/mL of MPs had a decrease in algal cell density, with no corresponding decline in EPS production. • An efficient 2D shallow water hydro-sediment-morphodynamic model is presented. • Morphodynamic processes under the impact of cascade movable weirs are studied. • Disparate morphological changes may result under different operation schemes. • An alternating operation scheme is proposed to constrain morphological changes. Cascade movable weirs have been increasingly widely used for river landscaping, water storage and ecological wellbeing. The weirs disturb the prior equilibrium in line with fluvial hydrology, sediment transport and geomorphology, and may lead to profound changes in the river, of which, however, the understanding has so far remained poor. Here, the first of its kind, a computational modelling study is presented on the morphodynamic processes under the impact of cascade hydraulic lifting dams, a type of movable weirs, as to the middle Fen River, China. A two-dimensional shallow water hydro-sediment-morphodynamic model is applied to resolve the fluvial processes, which is physically coupled and computationally efficient based on Finite Volume Method, unstructured mesh, local time stepping and parallel computing. Computational results show that the cascade dams alter the flow and sediment transport locally and on the reach scale in a distinct manner under different operation schemes, which in turn incur disparate morphological changes. Collapse of all the dams all year round would lead to net degradation in the study reach, with the floodplains aggrading and the main channel degrading. Operation of all the dams all year round may induce an overall aggradation both on the floodplains and in the main channel. If all the dams collapse in flood seasons and operate in dry seasons (CF), degradation occurs in the main channel whereas the floodplains experience aggradation, with a net degradation. When only the dams in the main channel operate all year round (OM), the floodplains degrade while the main channel aggrades, resulting in a net aggradation in the study reach. Either aggradation or degradation may prevail locally on floodplains, in main channel and individual subreaches. The present findings lead us to propose a complex operation scheme of annually alternating CF and OM to constrain significant morphological changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Turbidity currents are the most common flows of water, and suspended and bed load sediment occurring in the relatively deep sea and lakes, and act as large systems of sediment distribution. Due to the turbid nature of the flow, they may impact subaqueous infrastructures, as well as ecosystems, during motion, so quantifying the turbidity degree is important to predict the current impact. A particular type of these currents is the so-called volcaniclastic turbidity currents or subaqueous ash flows, which are mostly composed of fine-grained volcanic particles, and are used here as synonymous (sensu hydraulic) with the meaning of secondary current. In this paper, a method to estimate the water entrainment (column condition model), as well as the sedimentation and deposition rates (conveyer model), in volcaniclastic turbidity currents is proposed, by starting from the physical features of the deposits or inverse procedure. Some criteria of sediment mechanics are used to approximate the flow hydraulic parameters needed to quantify the water entrainment, as well as the shear velocity in volcaniclastic turbidity currents. The deposits used as case study are the impressive, meters thick, well-sorted rhyolitic ash turbidites of Late Pliocene cropping out in Southern Italy, particularly in the Craco area, Matera. The water entrainment coefficient of the currents is calculated in a range of particle concentration and slope angle, whereas the slope angle giving the sedimentation rate is calculated in a range of flow shear velocity, which in turns gives the deposition rate. The results have a general validity for depositional turbidity currents laden with well-sorted sediment, and they show that the water entrainment is low for relatively dense, slow-moving, subcritical flows, but it increases as the Richardson number decreases for relatively dilute, fast, supercritical flows. Moreover, the sedimentation and deposition rates are high for relatively intense flows moving over gentle slopes, but they decrease for relatively weak flows moving over steep slopes. The deposit sedimentary structures thus infer sedimentation, and particularly depositional processes. Finally, the conveyer model is extended conceptually to pyroclastic density currents, when approximating, but not exclusively, the column condition model in the flow above the flow boundary zone. Abstract: This laboratory study describes the sediment patterns formed in a sand bed around circular patches of rigid vertical cylinders, representing a patch of reedy emergent vegetation. The patch diameter was much smaller than the channel width. Two patch densities (solid volume fraction 3% and 10%) and two patch diameters (22 and 10cm) were considered. For flows above the threshold of sediment motion, patterns of sediment erosion and deposition were observed around and within the patch. Scouring within the patch was positively correlated with turbulent kinetic energy in the patch. For sparse patches, sediment scoured from within the patch was mostly deposited within one patch diameter downstream of the patch. For dense patches, which experience greater flow diversion, sediment scoured from the patch was carried farther downstream before deposition along the patch centerline. Differences between the sparse and dense patch patterns of deposition are explained in the context of flow diversion and wake structure, which are related to a nondimensional flow blockage parameter. Abstract: In order to assess the extent of sediment connectivity between uplands and lowlands and to quantify the processes of in-channel deposition and remobilization, measurements of suspended sediment fluxes were conducted in a nested rural catchment of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Data were collected over one year at three upland sites (3 to 12km2) and two downstream stations (390–630km2). Our results show that a structural discontinuity in the catchment (i.e. abrupt slope decrease at the junction between piedmonts and the alluvial plain from 2 to 10% to<0.1%) could be compensated by functional continuity during floods. Direct conveyance of fine sediment to the outlet occurred when a high stream transport capacity was reached. Erosion of the streambed was observed on various occasions and accounted for up to 50% of the flux leaving the catchment during one event. Conversely, temporary in-channel storage was apparent on other occasions, amounting to up to 52% of the flux recorded upstream during one storm. These two distinct behaviours were approximately equally distributed along the rainy season and strongly driven by the extent of coupling between surface and subsurface water. This work indeed highlights the role of baseflow spatial variations in determining the extent of lowland sediment conveyance. Riverbed erosional processes occurred when large differences in pre-event baseflow values (i.e. at least a twofold longitudinal increase) were observed between the 5-km distant lowland stations. Abstract: Fluvial erosion of peat deposits occurs in many environmental settings; however, the erosion and transport of large peat blocks by river channels has received relatively little attention. This paper describes the sedimentary significance and potential palaeoenvironmental interpretation of peat blocks in alluvial river systems. Evidence is presented from a number of field studies of upland river systems in northern England that illustrate a range of peat block forms and sedimentary features that are briefly compared with examples of peat blocks preserved in gravel stratigraphy. We show that peat blocks are an important geomorphological and sedimentological component of upland rivers draining eroding peatland catchments. They are of widespread occurrence and contribute significantly to river channel roughness and channel sedimentation. A variety of common sedimentary features can be observed including, shadow, crescent, perched, armoured, drape, embedded (part buried), cluster, and step forms. Peat blocks tend to be deposited on channel margins and bar tops and can be used as “maximum” stage indicator for major floods. The role of peat blocks in controlling sedimentation varies with channel width. In narrow channels where the size of the peat block approximates the channel width, blocks become jammed in the channel and exert a primary control on channel sedimentation. In wider channels, blocks tend to occur in isolation or in small clusters and are of only secondary importance in controlling sedimentation. Residence times of peat blocks varies from short periods of temporary deposition (days to months) to much longer timescales (months to years) with some blocks becoming permanently incorporated into the sedimentary record. The sedimentary characteristics of contemporary buried peat blocks have much in common with blocks preserved in alluvial gravel stratigraphy. This offers the potential for using these features for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Peat blocks in many ways are analogous to other low density geological materials (ice blocks, woody debris, and some volcanic sediments), and recognising the special sedimentological characteristics of this suite of materials is important as they are not always adequately characterised using conventional hydraulic relationships. Abstract: Several measurements of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal marine compartments (viz. atmosphere, sea surface microlayer, subsurface seawater, sinking particles and sediments), made nearly simultaneously at two stations in the north-eastern Mediterranean, were used to estimate the transport fluxes of individual and total PAHs through the air–seawater-sediment system. Diffusive air–sea exchange fluxes were estimated using both subsurface water (SSW) and sea surface microlayer (SML) concentrations. The air–SML fluxes ranged from 411 to 12,292ngm−2 d−1 (absorption) and from −506 to –13,746ngm−2 d−1 (volatilisation) for total PAHs (Σ15). Air–seawater column transport of particle-associated PAHs was estimated from the analysis of particulate atmospheric and sediment interceptor trap materials. Air–sea particle deposition fluxes of total PAHs ranged from 13 to 114ngm−2 d−1 and seawater particle settling fluxes (upper 5m water column) ranged from 184 to 323ngm−2 d−1. The results of this study indicate that both the magnitude and the direction of the calculated air–sea diffusive fluxes change when PAH concentrations in the SML are considered. As a result, PAHs accumulation in the SML could produce the so-called “flux capping effect”. However, the high variability in the coastal air–sea PAHs flux estimations, mainly due to the parameters uncertainty, requires further experimental approaches, including improvement of parameterisations. Abstract: The effect of interactions between the sediment and water column on concentrations of microbes in streams is quantified with a one-dimensional, steady state model. The effects of nine main parameters describing the flow, sediment transport, and microbial growth and decay are encapsulated in two dimensionless parameters: the Damköhler number Da, or the ratio of the time scales of advection and net growth, and the sediment interaction parameter S, or the ratio of the amount of microbes lost or gained in the sediment and the amount of microbes lost or gained in the water column. Applications of the model illustrate the importance of the sediment and identify parameters that require further study. The model predicts the field measurements of within a factor of 2 in two of three cases, while concentrations predicted by ignoring the sediment exceed the measured values. In general, the effects of ignoring interactions with the sediment depend on Da and S. The loading predicted to meet water quality standards when the sediment is considered can be either greater than or less than the loading predicted when it is not considered. The applications of the model and an analysis of uncertainty suggest that further work on the settling velocity, attached fraction, resuspension rate, and net growth rate in the sediment would help to improve predictions of the fate and transport of microbes. Abstract: Laboratory experiments using steady flows and simulated tidal flows were conducted to evaluate two conflicting paradigms for cohesive sediment transport: mutually exclusive vs. simultaneous erosion and deposition. Due to the secondary flow and skewed distribution of bed shear stress (τ b), the deposition space is mostly confined to the inner wall of an annular flume. The area of deposition (or the length of deposition because of the axially symmetrical flow) provides an indicator to determine when deposition at the sediment–water interface starts. The direct observation of deposition stemming from the inner corner suggests that a critical shear stress for deposition (τ cd =0.03–0.06 Pa) does exist. Changes in deposit length and depth-averaged suspended sediment concentration (SSC) under simulated tidal cycles demonstrate that deposition can happen only in tidal decelerating phases when local τ b is less than τ cd. The exclusive paradigm incorporated with the correct erosion threshold (τ ce) profile and erosion behavior could explain changes in laboratory- and field-observed depth-averaged SSC under all tidal regimes. Abstract: The influence of three different species of tubicolous worms (Pygospio elegans, Polydora ciliata and Lagis koreni) on the hydrodynamic bottom roughness length (z 0) was analysed in this study. Flume experiments and geospatial methods were combined to determine the potential interactions between worm tubes and the near-bed flow regime and the resulting effects on sediment transport in the south-western Baltic Sea. The three selected species are common in the area of interest (3539 km2). Their species-specific population densities were taken from existing macrozoobenthos datasets and transferred into a Geographic Information System (GIS). In analogy to the sediment roughness length, the hydrodynamic roughness lengths generated by the tubicolous worms were calculated and corresponding sediment transport values, derived from flume experiments with artificial tube lawns, were geospatially analysed using GIS. In order to show the direct influence of worm tubes on the surrounding sediment surface flume experiments were conducted at two given current velocities of 20 cm s−1 for sediment displacement effects and 5 cm s−1 for deposition effects. The roughness length was shown to increase by a factor of 2 to 30 in the presence of biogenic structures such as the worm tubes. The near-bed hydrodynamic conditions are significantly influenced at low roughness densities through independent or isolated flow conditions at 0.7 to 1.9% and at high roughness densities between 4.2 and 7.5%, resulting in unaffected sediment surfaces through “skimming flow”, as well. The GIS analysis revealed that this effect occurs over 4% (137 km2) of the area of investigation, whereas sediment displacement at roughness densities between 0.7 and 1.9% due to increased turbulence is the predominant effect over 33% (present on 1172 km2) of the area of investigation. Abstract: A 3-D general purpose Navier–Stokes solver was used to calculate the 2-D flow in front of the breakwater. The k–ω, SST (shear–stress transport) model was selected as the turbulence model. The morphologic model of the present code couples the flow solution with a sediment transport description, and routines for updating the computational mesh based on the mass balance of sediment. Laboratory experiments of scour also were conducted in a wave flume to obtain data for model verification. Both in the numerical simulations and in the laboratory experiment, two kinds of breakwaters were used: A vertical-wall breakwater; and a sloping-wall breakwater (Slope: 1:1.5). Numerically obtained scour-deposition profiles were compared with the experiments. The numerical results show that the equilibrium scour depth normalized by the wave height decreases with increasing water-depth-to-wave-length ratio. Although the numerical results obtained for vertical-wall breakwaters are consistent with the existing experimental data (including the present experiment), the numerical results for the sloping-wall case appear to be not very satisfactory. Abstract: Sandy sediments in shallow coastal waters of the Baltic Sea are often characterised by large numbers of biogenic structures which are produced by macrozoobenthos species. A series of experiments was devised to quantify how the interaction of such structures with the near-bed flow regime affects the sediment flux. Most experiments were done with simplified replicates of structures generated by typical species commonly found in the Mecklenburg Bight, starting with solitary structures and regularly-spaced arrays in a range of characteristic population densities, followed by a complex benthic macrofauna community, both artificial and alive. A laboratory flume channel, equipped with an acoustic Doppler flow sensor and a topography scanning laser, was used for high-resolution measurements (2 mm horizontal step size and 0.3 mm vertical resolution) of sand erosion (220 µm median grain size, at 20 cm s−1) and fine particle deposition (8 µm grain size, at 5 cm s−1). Sediment transport threshold values were measured for each layout. As a rule-of-thumb, both the erosion fluxes and the deposition of suspended matter increased considerably at low population densities (below 2%, expressed as percent of the sediment surface covered, i.e. roughness density RD). Above densities of 4%, erosion almost stopped inside the test arrays, and deposition remained well below the level of unpopulated areas. An attempt to extrapolate these findings to field conditions (using field current velocity data from 2001) showed that the net flux switched from erosion to deposition for densities above 5%. These parameters can now be integrated into a numerical sediment transport model coupling waves, currents, sediment dynamics and biological processes, which is currently under construction at the Baltic Sea Research Institute (IOW), Rostock, Germany. Abstract: There are a variety of different marine sediment transport processes that affect the evolution of continental shelf profiles. Physically based numerical models make it possible to simulate the evolution of the continental shelf in response to these processes, which may be combined with different magnitudes, frequencies and durations. The basic model that is employed in most numerical simulations is based on conservation of mass and is a moving boundary problem since the river mouth progrades into the receiving basin. The general form of these stratigraphic or seafloor evolution models is a first-order, Exner-type differential equation that is forced by a sediment deposition/erosion function. This latter function depends on which sediment transport processes are modeled and how they are modeled, so it is desirable to have a solution method that works for any such function. This paper presents a general solution method to this type of evolution equation that works for any initial bathymetry and sediment deposition function given as 1D functions of seaward distance. It is based on the Laplace transform. Numerical results often exhibit “equilibrium profile” solutions for a wide variety of different model scenarios. These profiles may be viewed as travelling waves, such that the rate of progradation gives the speed of this wave as it advances into the receiving basin. When realistic initial and boundary conditions are used, profiles are often seen to evolve toward forms that are independent of the initial bathymetry. Although episodic perturbations such as turbidities disrupt these forms, they still serve as attractors for the system dynamics. An application of the solution method presented in this paper also allows the shape of equilibrium profiles and the progradation rate to be determined from a specification of the initial bathymetry and the sediment deposition function. Several illustrative examples are given in closed form. Results are also presented that make it possible to compute the amount of time required for an equilibrium profile to be re-established after a perturbation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Summary: We used a simple laboratory experiment to investigate whether infiltration influences raindrop-impact induced soil erosion. There was substantially less erosion under infiltration conditions than with no infiltration. This was because a “shield” layer of deposited particles developed more rapidly under infiltration compared to “no-infiltration” conditions. Interestingly, the “shield” depth that fully protected the underlying soil from raindrop-impacts was shallower under infiltrating conditions. We found that the Rose soil erosion model captured the erosion dynamics well (R 2 ≈0.9). Predicting the “full-shield” depth remains unresolved. These results add evidence to previous studies indicating that saturated, slowly draining areas in the landscape are particularly susceptible to soil erosion from raindrop impact. Deposition, turnover and movement of persistent organic pollutants (POP) were investigated in the EU integrated project “AquaTerra”, which is among the first funded environmental projects within the 6th Framework Program by the European Commission. Project work integrates across various disciplines that range from biogeochemistry, environmental engineering, computer modelling and chemistry to socio-economic sciences. Field study areas are the river basins of the Ebro, the Meuse, the Elbe and the Danube as well as the 3-km2 French catchment of the Brévilles Spring. Within the first 2 years of the project more than 1700 samples of atmospherically deposited particles, sediments, and water have been collected in the above-mentioned systems. Results show clear spatial patterns of deposition of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with the highest rates in the Meuse Basin. For local inputs, in the Brévilles sandy aquifer, the contamination of the groundwater by the pesticides atrazine (AT) and deethylatrazine did not decrease even 5 years after their agricultural inputs were stopped. On the other hand, herbicides such as mecroprop (MCPP), and PAHs, were at least partially degraded microbiologically in laboratory studies with soils and aquifer material from selected sites. For sediment transport of contaminants, new flood sampling techniques revealed highest deposition rates of β-hexachlorocyclohexane (β−HCH) in river sediments at hotspot areas on the Mulde River in the Bitterfeld region (Elbe Basin, Germany). Abstract: Pressure-gradient driven, advective flows through permeable sediments are recognized as an important mechanism by which dissolved and particulate materials are exchanged between the near-bottom water and the seabed. Here, we focus on the deposition of particulate organic matter in wave-formed, rippled beds representative of permeable coastal ocean sediments. In addition, we examine the release of previously deposited material when sediment transport is initiated. Laboratory experiments were conducted in an oscillatory water tunnel using cultured diatoms (4–6μm dia.) as a tracer for particulate organic matter. Using different ripple geometries on a coarse sand bed (median dia.=575μm) and following deposition under controlled flow conditions, we cored extensively to determine the distribution and flux of diatoms to the bed. Results showed greater diatom deposition (3.5×) and penetration depths (4–5cm) in ripple troughs in comparison to ripple crests (<2cm), qualitatively in agreement with past model predictions and experimental results. Both this pattern and the total diatom flux were consistent over a 3-fold variation in ripple wavelength (17–50cm) and a 4-fold variation in ripple height (1.4–7.7cm). The total diatom flux was only marginally enhanced by the presence of ripples (∼1.6×) compared to a flat bed. Our data suggest that the total diatom flux may be less controlled by rippled bed topography than solute exchanges, including but not limited to advective porewater flows. Repeatability between replicate depositional runs allowed us to conduct resuspension experiments in which rippled beds previously impregnated with diatoms were eroded and allowed to establish a new ripple configuration. Approximately half (45–60%) of the embedded diatoms were released during reconfiguration of the ripples, a process that lasted 20min. Remaining diatoms were buried comparatively deeper in isolated pockets, the location a function of ripple position both before and after sediment resuspension. Our results clearly indicate that small particle deposition to a rippled bed is a simple pattern predicted by models and prior experiments but that the total flux is not strongly determined by ripple geometry. However, the net depositional pattern in the real ocean will be determined by the combined effects of local sediment erosion and deposition, and thus these two processes act in tandem to lead to substantial, ripple-scale heterogeneity of organic matter input to shelf sediments in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions. Abstract: Resuspension, transport, and deposition of sediments over the continental shelf and slope are complex processes and there is still a need to understand the underlying spatial and temporal dynamical scales. As a step towards this goal, a two-dimensional slice model (zero gradients in the alongshore direction) based on the primitive flow equations and a range of sediment classes has been developed. The circulation is forced from rest by upwelling or downwelling winds, which are spatially uniform. Results are presented for a range of wind speeds and sediment settling speeds. Upwelling flows carry fine sediments (low settling speeds) far offshore within the surface Ekman layer, and significant deposition eventually occurs beyond the shelf break. However, coarser sediments quickly settle out of the deeper onshore component of the circulation, which can lead to accumulation of bottom sediments within the coastal zone. Downwelling flows are more effective at transporting coarse sediments off the shelf. However, strong vertical mixing at the shelf break ensures that some material is also carried into the surface Ekman layer and returned onshore. The concentrations and settling fluxes of coarse sediments decrease offshore and increase with depth under both upwelling and downwelling conditions, consistent with trends observed in sediment trap data. However, finer sediments decrease with depth (upwelling) or reach a maximum around the depth of the shelf break (downwelling). It is shown that under uniform wind conditions, suspended sediment concentrations and settling fluxes decay offshore over a length scale of order τ s /ρf|w s|, where τ s is the wind stress, ρ the water density, f the Coriolis parameter, and w s is the sediment settling velocity. This scaling applies to both upwelling and downwelling conditions, provided offshore transport is dominated by wind-driven advection, rather than horizontal diffusion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study presents the results of a long-term monitoring program of bed level changes measured during 8 yr at an intertidal mudflat in a microtidal, temperate coastal lagoon. Additionally, bed level measurements obtained at a 10-min temporal resolution at the same tidal flat and at the bed of a nearby tidal channel are presented. Short-term changes in bed level are one or two orders of magnitude larger than the annual net-deposition rate, which shows that the environment is highly dynamic with respect to erosion, transport and deposition of fine-grained sediment. Some seasonality in the bed level changes was observed and there is a tendency for mudflat deposition in spring, summer and early autumn and erosion during the rest of the year, but interannual variations are large and different parts of the mudflat show different seasonal signals. A close coupling between sub- and intertidal deposition and erosion was observed. The time-series showed that some of the material eroded from the mudflat was not exported to the open sea, but instead temporarily deposited in a nearby shallow tidal channel and later returned to the mudflat during calmer weather conditions. These findings support previously published hypothesis and results of modelling studies. Based on the observed abundance of fine-grained sediment at the study sites and the high accretion rates generally found on fine-grained tidal flats in the Danish Wadden Sea area, it is argued that these fine-grained tidal flats are not seriously threatened by the expected sea level rise in the 21st century. Abstract: The erosion behaviour of various fine-grained sediment deposits has been investigated in laboratory experiments. This work mainly focused on tests using sewer sediment in which strong biochemical reactions were observed during the deposit formation period. A small number of initial tests were conducted in which the deposits were made from mixtures of “clean” mineral and organic sediments. The erosion behaviour observed in these tests was compared with the erosion characteristics for sediments taken from deposits in a sewer. The impact of the biological processes on physical properties such as bulk density, water content, deposit structure and the erosive behaviour as a function of bed shear stress are quantified and discussed. Based on these observations it is believed that bio-processes weaken the strength of the in-pipe sediment deposits. A significantly weaker sediment surface layer was observed during deposition under quiescent oxygen-rich conditions. This resulted in a deposit with low shear strength which may be a cause of a first foul flush of suspended sediment when flow rates were increased. Comparison between tests with sewer sediments and the artificial representative surrogates suggested that the deposits of the later did not correctly simulate the depositional development and the resultant erosion patterns observed with the more bio-active sewer sediment. Abstract: The area burned by wildfire in the states of Arizona and New Mexico in the southwestern US has been increasing in recent years. In many cases, high severity burns have caused dramatic increases in runoff and sediment yield from burned watersheds. This paper describes the potential and limitations of the HEC6T sediment transport model to describe changes in channel scour and deposition following the Cerro Grande fire near Los Alamos, New Mexico. Following the fire, Pueblo Canyon, near Los Alamos, was subject to a peak flow two orders of magnitudes higher than any discharge in the 7-year period of record, and twice the initial post-fire estimate of the 100-year event. HEC6T requires that the limits of scour and deposition on a cross-section be specified prior to application. This was achieved by using geomorphologic principles, predicted post-burn hydrology and long-term estimates of channel change derived from air photos, to estimate post-fire channel widths. Because significant quantities of silt and clay were present in the runoff, erosion shear stress and erosion rate parameters for cohesive sediments had to be obtained experimentally. After a sensitivity analysis, an optimization routine was used to estimate the optimal model parameter values for sensitive parameters. HEC6T was able to accurately model the change in cumulative sediment volume change derived from Airborne Laser Swath Mapping (ALSM, often called Lidar) taken before and after the large post-fire event. One discrepancy between the HEC6T model prediction and the ALSM-estimated change was that the ALSM-estimated change showed the greatest amount of deposition in a portion of the canyon with increasing slope, which the HEC6T model did not predict. Any sediment transport model will predict increased sediment transport capacity with increasing energy slope, so that it was considered to be beyond the capability of any sediment transport model to predict this deposition. Therefore, HEC6T simulated the overall changes in scour and deposition within reasonable expectation of the capabilities of physically-based sediment transport modeling indicating that it is capable of modeling sediment transport in ephemeral channels following wildfire. A model of intertidal sediment transport, including effects of bioturbation and biostabilisation, was applied to two transects on the east coast of England: Leverton (within the Wash) and Skeffling (in the Humber Estuary). The physical and biological parameters were chosen to represent four 1-year scenarios: a baseline year (1995), the same year but with estuarine nitrate inputs reduced by 50% and by 16%, and a year with climate change effects estimated for 2050. The changes in nitrate supply can potentially change microphytobenthos numbers within the surface sediment, which will then affect erodibility. The model results show a range of behaviour determined by bathymetry, external forcing and biotic state. When intertidal sediment transport is dominated by external sediment supply, the model produces highest deposition at the most offshore point, and there is greatest deposition in the winter and spring, when offshore sediment concentrations are highest. When intertidal processes dominate intertidal sediment transport, there is a peak of deposition at the high-shore level and erosion at mid-tide levels. The greatest deposition now occurs in winter and summer, when low chlorophyll levels mean that the sediment is most erodible. The Skeffling transect was dominated by intertidal processes for the baseline scenario and with a 16% reduction in nitrate. Under the climate change (warm winter) scenario, the Skeffling transect was dominated by external sediment supply. The scenario with 50% reduction in nitrate gave intermediate behaviour at Skeffling (intertidally driven during the winter and summer, and governed by offshore sediment supply during spring and autumn). The spatial and size distribution of sediment deposited from short periods of overland flow due to the effect of a simulated grass buffer strip was measured for low slopes of 1.6, 3.4 and 5.1%. These data were analysed so as to critically evaluate two alternative models of the process of re-entrainment of recently deposited sediment. A model of re-entrainment, previously thought to be appropriate only for a steady-state or equilibrium situation, was found to give better agreement with experiments than did a model previously used in the literature on this subject. Surface gravity waves play an important role in sediment transport. Previous studies have focused on the role of bottom shear enhanced by the surface wave orbital velocity. In this study, we embedded the University of New South Wales Sediment model into the Princeton Ocean Model, which includes a three-dimensional wave module to study sediment dynamics near a sandy spit in Sanniang Bay in the South China Sea. The simulated results for the deposition rate show that wave-induced currents play a dominant role in the maintenance of the sandy spit. The spit tip was formed as a result of the separation of wave-induced coastal flow. The spit tip was shown to be a barrier to the dominant wave-induced current, and the spit base was simulated to form via sand accumulation in the shelter of the spit tip. The deposition is mainly in the low-energy region behind the tip of the spit, which can counter the erosion effect of dominant wave-induced currents. The dominant wave-induced current prompts the lateral infilling of the spit tip when both the spit tip and base are above the water surface. The sediment carried by the coastal current is deposited along the flow branch of separation and forms the spit tip, which indicates that the sediment is deposited where the longshore current changes into an offshore current.
