This paper presents an integrated experimental-numerical effort to more accurately model the damage characteristics of asphalt mixtures and pavement structures than conventional elastic and (or) linear viscoelastic approaches can. To this end, Schapery's nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model was implemented into a finite element software via user defined subroutine (user material, or UMAT) to analyze an asphalt pavement subjected to heavy truck loads. Then, a series of creep and recovery tests were conducted at various stress levels and at different temperatures to obtain the stress-dependent and temperature-sensitive viscoelastic material properties of asphalt mixtures. With the viscoelastic material properties characterized and the UMAT code, a typical pavement structure subjected to repeated heavy truck loads was modeled with the consideration of the effect of material nonlinearity with a realistic tire loading configuration. Three-dimensional finite element simulations of the pavement structure present significant differences between the linear viscoelastic approach and the nonlinear viscoelastic modeling in the prediction of pavement performance with respect to rutting and fatigue cracking. The differences between the two approaches underline the importance of proper and more realistic characterization of pavement materials and should be addressed in the process of performance-based pavement design. This paper describes the development and application of a computational modeling approach incorporated with pertinent laboratory testing that can be used to predict fracture damage performance of bituminous paving mixtures. In the model, material viscoelasticity, mixture microstructure, and cohesive zone fracture properties are implemented within a finite element method, which is intended to simulate nonlinear-inelastic microscale fracture and its propagation to complete failure in bituminous mixtures. The model is applied to different materials, and the resulting model simulations are compared to experimental results for model validation. With some limitations and technical issues to be overcome in the future, the model presented herein clearly demonstrates several advancements based on its features accounting for material viscoelasticity, heterogeneity, and cohesive zone fracture. This paper presents the results of an experimental and analytical study of the fatigue performance of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with externally post-tensioned carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons. Two loading conditions prior to strengthening the beams were investigated: in-service loading and overloading. A total of 18 beams were tested to failure: three under monotonic loading and fifteen under fatigue loads. The CFRP tendons were post-tensioned to 40% of their ultimate capacity. The results demonstrated that overloading the beams had no discernable effect on the fatigue life of the strengthened beams. The strain-reduction approach for unbonded steel tendons was modified to account for using CFRP tendons and for the permanent deformations resulting from the overloading process. The loading history of the beams prior to and after post-tensioning was incorporated into a strain-life fatigue model to predict the fatigue life of the strengthened beams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a comparison of the two main regional damage estimation methodologies currently in use, namely the modified Mercalli intensity (MMI) based approach and the spectral parameter based approach. In the first methodology, expected damage is related to ground shaking intensity in terms of MMI through damage probability matrices. In the second methodology, the ground motion intensity is described in terms of spectral acceleration (SA), and building response in terms of spectral displacement (SD). Both methodologies were applied to buildings in Vancouver of three different construction types: single-family wood-frame houses, low-rise unreinforced masonry buildings, and high-rise concrete frame structures with concrete shear walls. The two methodologies predict damage that lies in the same general damage categories of light and moderate, which are defined by fairly broad ranges in mean damage factors. The specific mean damage factors predicted by the two methods for a given location are significantly different, however. An asphalt concrete damage–energy fatigue approach based on the concept of change in dissipated energy is presented in this paper. The damage–energy based fatigue approach is simple and based on a sound theoretical background. The central concept of the energy approach is the energy fatigue curve, which is based on two key elements, namely the plateau value (PV) and the number of load cycles to true failure (Ntf). The plateau value represents the constant value of the percentage of dissipated energy that produces damage to the material under cyclic loading. Failure is defined as the number of load cycles at which this percentage of dissipated energy begins to increase rapidly, indicating instability. Flexural fatigue testing was used to test hundreds of asphalt concrete beams, mainly under controlled-strain testing conditions. It was found that PV is highly dependent on the initial loading conditions, stress, strain, and dissipated energy. As a result, it can be used conveniently in pavement design. The number of load cycles to 50% reduction in initial stiffness was found to be highly correlated with the new failure point (Ntf). Using the dissipated energy concepts in fatigue analysis makes it possible to account for damage accumulation in a straightforward manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concrete structures are becoming more and more sophisticated and submitted to severe conditions, for example: high stresses and temperatures, cyclic loadings, earthquakes, etc. It is therefore necessary to simulate correctly the behaviour and damage of such structures. However, the behaviour of this material is among the most complex ones: various phenomena are observed experimentally, such as, loss of stiffness, irreversible strains, stiffness recovery and dissymmetric behaviour to mention a few. If all these effects are taken into consideration, it would lead to models that use numerous parameters. In this paper, a framework for damage mechanics of concrete is presented and used to simulate the nonlinear behaviour of concrete using finite element method (FEM). A relatively simple isotropic damage model, containing essentially no adjustable parameters is shown to produce results in remarkably good agreement with experimental results. Indeed, the damage law requires only the fracture energy to be completely defined. A special form of damage surfaces is constructed to illustrate the application of the model. A new damage criterion, defined as an equivalent strain norm, is proposed to take into consideration the dissymmetric behaviour of concrete. This paper presents the results of regional seismic risk assessment studies that were carried out for two cities in southwestern British Columbia, Vancouver and Victoria. Ground shaking intensity in the area was obtained using the seismic source zones delineated by the Geological Survey of Canada for a probability level of 10% chance of exceedance in 50 years. Building inventories were compiled by aggregating data from sidewalk surveys as well as municipal databases. Modified Mercalli intensity-based damage matrices that relate the level of ground shaking to the amount of damage expected in different types of structures were used to estimate damage to structural and non-structural components of buildings. Estimated damage and loss distributions were mapped on a block-by-block basis. The historic sections of the cities were estimated to have damage levels between 10% and 30% of the replacement cost, while in the rest of the cities the estimated damage was generally in the 5% to 10% range. The results show the estimated economic loss distribution is considerably different from the damage distribution. Although the older neighbourhoods of the cities are expected to suffer highest amount of damage, the highest amount of economic loss is estimated to occur in areas with concentration of concrete high-rise buildings.
