The present study aimed to examine how the corrosive environment affected the low‐velocity impact (LVI) characteristics and damage mechanisms of thermoplastic polyamide fiber‐reinforced polymer (PFRP) composites. In this regard, composite specimens were subjected to corrosive environment containing 10 wt.% diluted HCl for one week and one month before LVI tests. To investigate the hostile effects of the corrosive environment on the composites, scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with energy‐dispersive X‐ray system (EDX) analyses were carried out, and thus variations in the elemental composition and damage mechanisms for the composites were determined. According to the examinations, it was discovered that the degradation in LVI responses, such as contact stiffness, bending stiffness, and peak force, increased with longer aging time, as expected. Furthermore, when the aging effect was assessed based on absorbed energy, the specimens exposed to a corrosive environment for one month exhibited the highest energy absorption compared to the control and 1‐week‐immersed ones. The degrading effect of the HCI environment appeared as higher damage severity on the composites, which was also detected from the SEM images. According to the SEM analyses, matrix cracks, corrosion pits, and local surface imperfections caused by ion exchange are detected in 1‐week‐immersed specimens, while more serious damage mechanisms such as fiber breakage and fiber pull‐out are noted in specimens exposed to corrosive environment for 1 month. Furthermore, approximately 6.33 wt.% CI was identified in the composites after 1 month of aging, which was associated with the hydrolysis triggered by rise in the composite's damage severity. This study utilizes a hydrothermal-solvothermal method to facilitate the fabrication of organobentonite (OB) by intercalating the surfactant octadecylamine (ODA) using several solvents (water (OB-Aq), ethanol (OB–Et), and mix 50% water/ethanol (OB-Aq/Et)). The physicochemical features of the materials were investigated using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface analyzer, and thermogravimetry differential thermal analysis characterization. The study of structural properties found that surfactant intercalation transformed the basal spacing. This was shown by a lower x-ray diffraction value of 2θ at <6° and the presence of peeled-off layers in the scanning electron microscope image. The thermogravimetry analysis and regeneration adsorption evaluated the structural stability of OB, demonstrating its capacity to withstand temperatures up to 300 °C and undergo three cycles of adsorption. In addition, the adsorption processes on direct yellow are mainly characterized by the pseudo-first-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The interaction between alumina-silica bentonite and ODA chains in this investigation influenced the adsorption mechanism. The adsorption system is influenced by pH, temperature, and ion competition, which can induce the disintegration of the direct yellow structure from the surfaces of the adsorbent. The mesoporous structures obtained have the highest Langmuir chemisorption capacities for OB-Aq, OB-Et, and OB-Aq/Et, with values of 270.27 mg/g, 108.696 mg/g, and 2000 mg/g, respectively. The high source stability and brightness of field emission gun equipped scanning electron microscopes (SEM) makes them ideal for high‐resolution digital image correlation (HRDIC). However, their high initial capital cost can be prohibitive for research organisations and groups. Conventional thermionic SEMs using either a tungsten hairpin or LaB6 filament are far more widespread due to their lower cost. Whilst it is understood that overall performance and ultimate resolution are lower than field emission SEMs, we propose that there is no fundamental reason why these instruments are unsuitable for HRDIC. We investigate the use of a LaB6 SEM as a viable tool for HRDIC. We detail the subtleties of performing HRDIC using a LaB6 thermionic source SEM, providing technical recommendations for best practices in using these instruments for strain mapping. The effects of instrument parameters on strain measurement noise are examined, with a focus on parameters of key relevance to in situ and ex situ mechanical testing. Errors in focus and image pixel size are found to be the primary contributors to the strain noise floor values, with stage accuracy being of secondary importance. We present a case study in oxygen‐free high‐conductivity copper, OFHC‐Cu, which is used in the designs of nuclear fusion components as a heat sink interlayer. Heterogeneous strain patterns are observed in this material, with high levels of strain localisation at grain boundaries. Active slip systems are identified using the relative displacement ratio method, demonstrating the quality of these data and the suitability of LaB6 instruments for HRDIC strain mapping, achieving performance approaching that expected of a field emission SEM. The studies presented in this paper constitute the first scientific attempt to interpret the manner whereby notched implements made of scapulae were made and used. These implements have been found at numerous European and non-European sites, usually dated to the Neolithic–Early Iron Age (predominantly the Early Bronze Age). Research has examined these products since the beginning of the 20th century, resulting in the development of several hypotheses regarding their functions. This paper presents the analysis results of 41 such artefacts from the early Bronze Age defensive settlement in Bruszczewo (central Poland). This is the largest collection of these products from a single site worldwide. The artefacts were subjected to multi-aspect traceological tests (both technological and functional) using optical, metallographic, and scanning electron microscopes. The residues identified on their surfaces were analysed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-rays spectroscopy. Moreover, the studies reported herein involved extensive experimental research. Consequently, the chain of operations followed in producing these tools was reconstructed and the use-wear traces present on their surfaces were classified; it was determined that these tools were most likely used for threshing cereals but might also have been used for threshing legumes. This is the first proof of threshing in central Europe in the Early Bronze Age and the first scientifically substantiated hypothesis regarding the function of these important artefacts. Background: The integration of stem cells, signaling molecules, and biomaterial scaffolds is fundamental for the successful engineering of functional bone tissue. Currently, the development of composite scaffolds has emerged as an attractive approach to meet the criteria of ideal scaffolds utilized in bone tissue engineering (BTE) for facilitating bone regeneration in bone defects. Recently, the incorporation of polycaprolactone (PCL) with hydroxyapatite (HA) has been developed as one of the suitable substitutes for BTE applications owing to their promising osteogenic properties. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) scaffold composed of PCL integrated with HA (PCL/HA) was prepared and assessed for its ability to support osteogenesis in vitro. Furthermore, this scaffold was evaluated explicitly for its efficacy in promoting the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of canine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (cBM-MSCs) to fill the knowledge gap regarding the use of composite scaffolds for BTE in the veterinary orthopedics field. Results: Our findings indicate that the PCL/HA scaffolds substantially supported the proliferation of cBM-MSCs. Notably, the group subjected to osteogenic induction exhibited a markedly upregulated expression of the osteogenic gene osterix (OSX) compared to the control group. Additionally, the construction of 3D scaffold constructs with differentiated cells and an extracellular matrix (ECM) was successfully imaged using scanning electron microscopy. Elemental analysis using a scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that these constructs possessed the mineral content of bone-like compositions, particularly the presence of calcium and phosphorus. Conclusions: This research highlights the synergistic potential of PCL/HA scaffolds in concert with cBM-MSCs, presenting a multidisciplinary approach to scaffold fabrication that effectively regulates cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. Future in vivo studies focusing on the repair and regeneration of bone defects are warranted to further explore the regenerative capacity of these constructs, with the ultimate goal of assessing their potential in veterinary clinical applications. Counting growth layers in dentine and/or secondary cementum is widely used for age determination in wild mammals but the underlying seasonal changes in the structure and degree of mineralisation of dental tissue have not been well characterised. We embedded first (m1) and second (m2) mandibular permanent molar teeth from a 12‐year‐old female Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) in PolyMethylMethAcrylate (PMMA), prepared cut and polished surfaces coated with evaporated carbon and used 20 kV back‐scattered electron imaging in a scanning electron microscope (BSE‐SEM) to study aspects of dental tissue structure which depend on the degree of mineralisation at the micron and sub‐micron scale. BSE‐SEM revealed differences between the mineral content of growth layers (annulations) in the secondary cementum and the primary and secondary dentine, the latter, incidentally, still forming at death in m1. Wide bands of less well mineralised tissue formed in the cementum during active appositional phases. Thin, denser bands formed by maturation‐mineralisation of existing tissue when growth slowed in winter. This maturation mimics the processes seen in lamellar bone and articular cartilage. Counter to previous suggestions, there was evidence of substantial resorption and repair of the secondary cementum and of formation of dentine throughout life. Secondary dentine is layered by mineral content like cementum. In the crown, this was mainly tubular dentine with well‐marked interglobular dentine layers. In the lower pulp chamber and root, it was largely without tubules. Substantial non‐mineralised spaces found at the cement‐dentine junction in the root apical regions in m2 represent inclusions of the Hertwig's Epithelial Root Sheath (HERS) or the Epithelial Rests of Malassez (ERM) between the two tissues, a phenomenon which has previously only been identified in Muridae. The anatomical changes which result in the formation of the incremental lines (annulations) in dental tissues of reindeer, identified here for the first time at the micrometre level, are likely to be common across most if not all long‐lived species of mammals living in seasonal environments. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is a crucial tool for studying microstructures of ceramic materials. However, the current practice heavily relies on manual efforts to extract porosity from SEM images. To address this issue, we propose PSTNet (Pyramid Segmentation Transformer Net) for grain and pore segmentation in SEM images, which merges multi-scale feature maps through operations like recombination and upsampling to predict and generate segmentation maps. These maps are used to predict the corresponding porosity at ceramic grain boundaries. To increase segmentation accuracy and minimize loss, we employ several strategies. (1) We train the micro-pore detection and segmentation model using publicly available Al2O3 and custom Y2O3 ceramic SEM images. We calculate the pixel percentage of segmented pores in SEM images to determine the surface porosity at the corresponding locations. (2) Utilizing high-temperature hot pressing sintering, we prepared and captured scanning electron microscope images of Y2O3 ceramics, with which a Y2O3 ceramic dataset was constructed through preprocessing and annotation. (3) We employed segmentation penalty cross-entropy loss, smooth L1 loss, and structural similarity (SSIM) loss as the constituent terms of a joint loss function. The segmentation penalty cross-entropy loss helps suppress segmentation loss bias, smooth L1 loss is utilized to reduce noise in images, and incorporating structural similarity into the loss function computation guides the model to better learn structural features of images, significantly improving the accuracy and robustness of semantic segmentation. (4) In the decoder stage, we utilized an improved version of the multi-head attention mechanism (MHA) for feature fusion, leading to a significant enhancement in model performance. Our model training is based on publicly available laser-sintered Al2O3 ceramic datasets and self-made high-temperature hot-pressed sintered Y2O3 ceramic datasets, and validation has been completed. Our Pix Acc score improves over the baseline by 12.2%, 86.52 vs. 76.01, and the mIoU score improves from by 25.5%, 69.10 vs. 51.49. The objective of this study is to investigate the storage stability and rheological property of bio-oil/lignin composite-modified asphalt. The composite-modified asphalt with different proportions of bio-oil was prepared and cured at 105 °C, 135 °C, and 165 °C for 24 h and 48 h. The storage stability of the composite-modified asphalt was evaluated based on the softening point difference, the storage stability index derived from rotational viscosity, the segregation rate based on temperature sweep, and the non-recoverable creep compliance measured through the Multiple Stress Creep Recovery test. The storage stability of bio-oil/lignin composite-modified asphalt was evaluated through testing and analysis of its infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy before and after thermal storage. The research results indicate that the maximum difference in softening point is 0.9 °C, and the calculated storage stability index is generally below 0.1. The maximum value of the segregation rate is 0.43, indicating excellent storage stability of the bio-oil/lignin composite-modified asphalt. According to the results from infrared spectroscopy, no chemical reactions occurred during the storage process of the composite-modified asphalt. This investigation explores the fabrication of polymer matrix nanocomposites via additive manufacturing (AM), using a UV photopolymerization resin and copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) with vat photopolymerization 3D printing technology. The aim in this study is to investigate the mentioned materials in different formulations in terms of inexpensive processing, the property related variability, and targeting multifunctional applications. After the AM process, samples were post-cured with UV light in order to obtain better mechanical properties. The particles and resin were mixed using an ultrasonicator, and the particle contents used were 0.0, 0.5, and 1.0 wt %. The process used in this investigation was simple and inexpensive, as the technologies used are quite accessible, from the 3D printer to the UV curing device. These formulations were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to observe the materials' microstructure and tensile tests to quantify stress–strain derived properties. Results showed that, besides the simplicity of the process, the mixing was effective, which was observed in the scanning electron microscope. Bipolaris maydis is a prominent pathogen causing maydis leaf blight disease (MLB) in warm, humid regions worldwide. Structural components of plants, particularly stomata, play a crucial role in defending against pathogen invasion. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of stomatal interactions at the histopathological and molecular levels in various cultivated maize genotypes from Punjab state of India. Bipolaris maydis was isolated, purified, and inoculated onto six maize genotypes. Leaf samples were collected 48 h post-inoculation, representing the disease phase. Stomatal aperture bioassays and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed on infected and non-infected samples. SEM analysis revealed distinct morphological variations, including stomatal aperture patterns and MLB pathogen invasion routes through stomata. Stomatal diameter varied among genotypes, and mycelium presence on the leaf surface was observed, with varying degrees of invasion through stomata. Genotypes exhibiting greater field symptom visibility displayed higher mycelium abundance and invasion. Additionally, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to quantify abscisic acid (ABA) content in maize leaves during the Bipolaris maydis -maize interaction. This analysis aimed to elucidate the relationship between ABA and biotic stress, shedding light on its role in defense responses against the pathogen. Overall, our study enhances the understanding of stomatal interactions, surface morphology, and ABA dynamics in maize- Bipolaris maydis interactions. These findings have implications for breeding programs seeking to develop resistant maize varieties and contribute to the overall management of MLB disease. Aim: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of initial irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and final irrigation with QMix, 40% citric acid, and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) on smear layer removal and dentin erosion. Methodology: Forty extracted human mandibular premolar teeth were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10) according to the type of final irrigants used: 17% EDTA, QMix, citric acid, and control (normal saline). Canals were mechanically prepared using ProTaper Next instruments to an apical size of X3. Subsequently, the roots were sectioned in a buccolingual direction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to assess the presence of the smear layer and the amount of dentin erosion in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds of the root canals. Results: In regards to smear layer removal, there was a significant difference between the control group and the other tested groups. Moreover, it was significantly higher in the coronal and middle thirds than in the apical third. However, there were no significant differences between the groups of EDTA, QMix, and citric acid. Concerning dentin erosion, citric acid produced significantly more dentin erosion than the other tested groups. Conclusion: Final irrigation with solutions had a higher ability to remove the smear layer in the coronal and middle thirds compared to the apical third. Background. Methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the major pathogens associated with life‐threatening infections, showing resistance to various antibiotics. This study aimed to assess the influence of monolaurin on biofilm‐forming MRSA. Methods. The agar dilution method determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of monolaurin against MRSA isolates and explored its impact on the resistance profile of selected antibiotics. The assessment of combined therapy involving monolaurin and antibiotics was conducted using fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC). The tissue culture plate strategy appraised monolaurin's antibiofilm activity and its inhibitory concentration (IC50), with assessment via scanning electron microscopy. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) discerned a monolaurin effect on the expression of the icaD gene. Results. Monolaurin exhibited MIC values ranging from 500 to 2000 μg/mL. FIC index showed a synergistic effect of monolaurin with β‐lactam antibiotics ranging from 0.0039 to 0.25 (p < 0.001). Among the 103 investigated MRSA isolates, 44 (44.7%) displayed moderate biofilm formation, while 59 (55.3%) were strong biofilm producers. Antibiofilm activity demonstrated concentration dependence, confirming monolaurin's capacity to inhibit biofilm formation and exhibited strong eradicating effects against preformed MRSA biofilms with IC50 values of 203.6 μg/mL and 379.3 μg/mL, respectively. Scanning electron microscope analysis revealed reduced cell attachments and diminished biofilm formation compared to the control. The expression levels of the icaD gene were remarkably reduced at monolaurin concentrations of 250 and 500 μg/mL. Conclusion. Monolaurin had significant inhibitory effects on MRSA pre‐existing biofilms as well as biofilm development. The preanalytical phase in clinical laboratory diagnostics is currently receiving more and more attention. This term describes one part of actions and aspects of the "brain-to-brain cycle" of the medical laboratory diagnostic procedure that take place before the analytical phase. However, the preanalytical activities, the handling of unsuitable samples and the reporting procedures are neither fully standardized nor harmonized worldwide. The influence of the properties of the blood collection needle must be acknowledged. In this work, we focused on the investigation of the internal structure and size of standardized 21G blood collection needles. All parameters were measured with a scanning electron microscope using a Jeol model JSM-6000PLUS. Our. The obtained data shows that the internal surfaces of the needles vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer (by around 35 %), and this may play an important role in influencing blood flow and even the risk of blood cell injury (especially hemolysis) during blood drawing. The differential actual needle diameters can vary greatly between needle manufactures and this variety may have a significant impact on laboratory values and may also lead to specimen rejection. Teleost fish possess calcium carbonate otoliths located in separate chambers (utriculus, sacculus, and lagena) of their membranous labyrinth. This study analyzed the surface topography of the sagittal otolith of the Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) and the daily and annual increments in these otoliths. The otolith surface, characterized by laser scanning confocal microscopy for the first time, consisted of a system of prominent ridges and valleys (grooves), but it is unclear whether these structures are functional or represent time-resolving markings reflecting growth periodicity. Within the first-year volume, daily increments, each consisting of an incremental (more mineralized) and a discontinuous (less mineralized) zone, were resolved by optical microscopy and backscattered electron (BSE) imaging in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Daily growth increments could, however, not be resolved in volumes formed after the first year, presumably because otolith growth markedly slows down and spacing of incremental markings narrows in older fish. Throughout otolith growth, the crystalline network continues across the discontinuous zones. Fluorochrome labeling provides additional information on growth after the first year. Compared with optical and BSE imaging, synchrotron microComputed Tomography of intact otoliths (with 0.69 µm volume elements) was less able to resolve daily increments; X-ray phase contrast reconstructions provided more detail than reconstructions with absorption contrast. Present study was conducted to determine the changes in the surface structure of the upper respiratory tract of Siirt‐coloured mohair goats by the silicone plastination method. Accordingly, the heads of 10 Siirt‐coloured mohair goats procured from slaughterhouses were divided into two halves. Half of each head was plastinated. After macro‐comparisons were made, the deformations of silicone plastination on the surface were examined by comparing the scanning electron microscope (SEM) findings of both upper respiratory tract tissue samples collected from plastinates and fresh material. When the data from scanning electron microscopy were analysed, cilia, cobblestone patterns, goblet cells and gland ducts on the epithelial surface were identified in areas on the upper respiratory tract. The SEM images of the plastinated tissues showed that the surface structures were degenerated due to the deformation of the surface epithelium. The plastination technique damaged the structures on the surface epithelium. Since the plastination technique and scanning electron microscopy have been studied together for the first time, we believe this would contribute to the scientific literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) is one of the most important medicinal plants, and its essential oil (EO) varies between 2.5% to 5% depending on differences in climate. The extraction method plays a significant role in the market price of EOs. In this study, the effect of atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) pretreatments (using air and argon (Ar) gases) for different times on the EO yield and on the quality, color, surface morphology, and wettability of cumin seeds were studied. Results: The scanning electron microscope analysis results revealed that the formation of fissures and cracks caused by ACP pretreatments was directly related to increasing the efficiency of EO extraction. Comparing the two gas treatments, the highest total color changes ΔE were related to the Ar and the lowest to the air treatment, and the highest amount of browning index was related to the Ar ACP pretreatment. In general, the ACP pretreatments improved the extraction efficiency compared with the control, so that the highest increase was observed in the Ar ACP pretreatment at the rate of 44%. Ar ACP pretreatments were observed to have a higher extraction efficiency than air ACP did. In the Ar ACP‐treated samples, cumin aldehyde, as the most important component of EO, was increased compared with the control (47.9–56.4%). Conclusion: The data obtained in this study showed that ACP pretreatment of cumin seeds could increase EO extraction efficacy. AbstractAn investigation is performed to study the damage mechanisms of dual phase steels using experimental analysis, local finite element simulation, and nonlocal peridynamics (PDs) method. The uniaxial tensile tests and preparation of metallography and SEM images have been used to peruse the pattern of deformation and voids in different phases. Understanding of the relationship between real microstructure and damage mechanisms can often not be obtained from microstructural investigation using experiments only. Here, a novel numerical approach is presented to investigate damage mechanisms in multiphase materials at micro scale level using both local and nonlocal numerical analyses and microstructural images from a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The nonlocal PDs method is capable to overcome many challenges associated with convergence problems in other numerical methods and to detail-oriented study of damage initiation and propagation autonomously. In this study, images of real microstructure are used as RVEs and imported to the FEM software and PD-developed code. The aim of the study is to determine factors affecting cast iron metallurgical quality in casting mass production using new modifiers. Results of studying mechanical properties, microstructure and thermal analysis are presented. Mechanical tests are performed on specimens cut from a stepped casting, and microstructural studies are conducted using a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Results of thermal analyses show that introduction of modifiers increases the eutectic minimum solidification temperature and therefore increases the likelihood of forming a vermicular form of graphite within cast iron. An increase in nucleation potential may be achieved by adding modifiers obtained from silicon production waste. Modifiers obtained from silicon production waste containing silicon dioxide and carbon nanoparticles appear to be the most advantageous final modifiers in terms of obtaining the best gray cast iron microstructure parameters and ductility properties. The aim of this research was to produce a film based on the mucilage of Paneerak flower modified with licorice root and copper sulfate nanoparticles. The D-optimal statistical scheme was used to study the antioxidant, antimicrobial, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal decomposition (DSC) properties of the films. The results showed that with the increase of licorice root and copper sulfate nanoparticles, the antioxidant activity of the film increased significantly (p<0.05). The results of the antimicrobial activity of the prepared films showed that the addition of licorice and copper sulfate nanoparticles caused the antimicrobial activity of the film against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that copper sulfate nanoparticles are physically combined with the mucilage polymer of Paneerak flower and it reduces the crystal structure.Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results confirm the physical presence of copper sulfate nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. FTIR results also showed weak electrostatic interactions between film components and composites. The results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) show that the surface of the films containing copper sulfate nanoparticles and licorice root are more heterogeneous than the mucilage of Paneerak flower. Shirin-bian and copper sulfate nanoparticles were able to delay the thermal decomposition of the mucilage of Paneerak flower and increase the thermal stability of the mucilage film. Finally, based on the results, the addition of copper sulfate nanoparticles and licorice root to edible films based on the mucilage of paneerak flower improved antimicrobial, antioxidant, DSC and SEM. Various contents of carbon fibers (CFs) and potassium titanate whiskers (PTWs) were added to an Fe-based impregnated diamond bit (IDB) matrix to enhance its adaptability to percussive–rotary drilling. A series of mechanical tests were conducted successively to find the effects of the reinforcing materials on the properties of the Fe-based IDB samples. Then, the fracture surfaces of the samples were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and the worn surfaces and abrasive debris of the samples were analyzed using a laser scanning confocal microscope and SEM. The results show that both the CF and PTW can effectively improve the hardness and bending strength of an Fe-based IDB matrix, and those parameters reached their maximum values at the additive amount of 1 wt%. However, the CF had a better enhancement effect than the PTW. Furthermore, the CF improved the impact wear resistance of the IDB matrix, with a minimum wear rate of 2.38 g/min at the additive amount of 2 wt%. However, the PTW continuously weakened the impact wear resistance of the IDB matrix with increases in its content. Moreover, the morphologies of the worn surfaces indicated that the minimum roughness of the CF-reinforced IDB matrix decreased significantly to as low as 4.91 μm, which was 46.16% lower than that without CF, whereas the minimum roughness of the PTW-reinforced samples decreased by 11.31%. Meanwhile, the abrasive debris of the CF-reinforced samples was more uniform and continuous compared to that of the PTW-reinforced samples. Overall, the appropriate addition of CF or PTWs can enhance the mechanical properties of Fe-based IDB matrices, which can be used on different formations based on their impact wear resistance. Millions of tons of plastic products are produced globally each year; however, the low degradation rate of plastics results in an accumulation of these products in almost every ecosystem on the planet, causing enormous environmental harm. In this study, we isolated three fungal strains found growing on a piece of foam and sought to determine if these fungi have the capacity to degrade plastic. According to multigene (ITS, LSU, TEF1-α and TUB2) phylogenetic analyses and morphological studies, the three fungal strains were identified as two distinct species: Lasiodiplodia iraniensis and Mortierella alpina. The strains were inoculated on potato dextrose agar (PDA), malt extract agar (MEA), and malt agar medium containing chloramphenicol (CMEA) and covered with polyurethane (PU) films and incubated for four months. It was found that Mortierella alpina (ZHKUCC 22–0283) contributed to the PU mass loss of 26.30% on CMEA at 32°C, while Lasiodiplodia iraniensis (ZHKUCC 22–0282) accounted for the PU mass loss of 13.55% on MEA at 32°C. The surface hyphae were washed off by the PU films, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging was used to check the fungal degradation of the PU films. The calcareous nannofossil genus Reticulofenestra and its related taxa are called "reticulofenestrids," and they were one of themajor nannofossil groups during the Cenozoic. The reticulofenestrid specimens are composed of two shields, proximal and distal, which are circular or subcircular in shape and consist of tiny calcite plates. Cyclic changes in the size and shape of reticulofenestrid coccoliths have been used to characterize their evolution. The major taxonomic turnover in this group was related to environmental changes during the Cenozoic. From the Oligocene to the Miocene, there were several different types of reticulofenestrids. The primary taxon of reticulofenestrids disappeared during the Oligocene-Miocene boundary, and elliptical species emerged during the early Miocene. However, it is uncertain exactly when and how the change in reticulofenestrids occurred. To understand the evolutionary trends of reticulofenestrids, we conducted biometric analyses from the Oligocene to the Miocene. Detailed observation and measurement of reticulofenestrid coccoliths under a scanning electron microscope revealed a significant size reduction in the group near the Oligocene--Miocene, which corresponds to a period of rapid global cooling. Furthermore, regarding the reticulofenestrid taxa in this study, central structures characterize the Oligocene genus Dictyococcites, and the long axis length of the coccolith outline and central areas can be effective characteristics for distinguishing between theMiocene Cyclicargolithus and Reticulofenestra. The present study focused on the histogenesis of the crop in quail embryos. The developmental sequence was recorded from day 10 of incubation to the hatching day (17th day) by gross anatomy, morphometric analysis and by using light and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Grossly, the crop was distinguished as an enlarged pouch of the cervical oesophagus on the 12th day of incubation. Histologically, the development of the crop began on the 10th day of incubation. The muscularis mucosae was observed as a small, thin layer of myoblast cells on the 10th day, then it appeared as longitudinally arranged smooth muscle fibres with progression of the developmental age till hatching day. The submucosal layer was also observed on the 10th day, while the lamina propria, muscular layer (inner circular and outer longitudinal layers of smooth muscle fibre) and glandular primordia were detected on the 12th day. The epithelial cells of crop revealed affinity for PAS stain and AB‐PAS on the 10th day of incubation till the 17th day, while the affinity for AB stain appeared on the 14th day of incubation. Additionally, the glandular cells showed the positive for AB, PAS and AB‐PAS on the 12th day of incubation. SEM sections showed variable sizes of the openings of the oesophageal glands. Introduction: Sperm morphology analysis is very necessary to understand male fertility and the etiology of infertility. Currently, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been widely used to determine surface topology. In this study, we will compare the effects of spermatozoa cryopreservation using three different types of cryoprotectants, namely Nakagata, modification and Kitazato. The cryoprotectant compositions used are Nakagata (raffinose and skim milk), modified (glycerol and raffinose) and Kitazato (glycerol and trehalose). Methods: SEM analysis was carried out on 8 sperm samples before cryopreservation and after the freeze-thaw process. Results: The results obtain showed that cryoprotectant modification was able to protect spermatozoa morphology better than Nakagata and Kitazato. Analysis revealed damage to plasma membrane, acrosome and loss of mitochondria in all treatment groups compared to fresh sperm. SEM showed obvious signs of post-thaw damage such as missing plasma membranes, sperm showing damaged acrosomes and mitochondria in the middle showing structural disorganization. Conclusion: SEM revealed that cryopreservation caused ultrastructural damage to mice sperm due to freezing and thawing. These details provide valuable data for further research to minimize the damage caused by cryopreservation to mice sperm. Microplasmas can be used for a wide range of technological applications and to improve the understanding of fundamental physics. Scanning electron microscopy, on the other hand, provides insights into the sample morphology and chemistry of materials from the mm‐ down to the nm‐scale. Combining both would provide direct insight into plasma‐sample interactions in real‐time and at high spatial resolution. Up till now, very few attempts in this direction have been made, and significant challenges remain. This work presents a stable direct current glow discharge microplasma setup built inside a scanning electron microscope. The experimental setup is capable of real‐time in situ imaging of the sample evolution during plasma operation and it demonstrates localized sputtering and sample oxidation. Further, the experimental parameters such as varying gas mixtures, electrode polarity, and field strength are explored and experimental V–I curves under various conditions are provided. These results demonstrate the capabilities of this setup in potential investigations of plasma physics, plasma‐surface interactions, and materials science and its practical applications. The presented setup shows the potential to have several technological applications, for example, to locally modify the sample surface (e.g., local oxidation and ion implantation for nanotechnology applications) on the µm‐scale. The purpose of the research is to analyze the possibility of obtaining an amorphous nanostructured state from the original amorphous state by ion irradiation. The processes of phase formation in the Fe75Mo5Si6B14 amorphous alloy under the influence of argon ion irradiation were investigated using the methods of highly sensitive dilatometry, microhardness measurements, and electron microscopy. The surface treatment of the amorphous alloy with argon ions was carried out at a voltage on the anode of 1 kV and a current through the sample of 1 mA. The surface morphology of the amorphous alloy treated with argon ions was studied under a LensSEI scanning electron microscope. The structure of amorphous alloys is characterized by the presence of frozen-in crystallization centers. It was found that the phenomenon of nanocrystallization is not observed during exposure to ion irradiation for up to 30 minutes. This is explained by the fact that, as a result of ion irradiation, the local temperature on the surface of the sample rises and reaches such values, at which, according to the thermodynamic theory of thermal stability, the frozen centers of crystallization can dissolve in the amorphous matrix. When the ion irradiation time of the source alloy is increased to 45 minutes, a decrease in thermal stability of 25 °C and an increase in microhardness of 8.2% are observed, therefore, the alloy is strengthened. This indirectly indicates the formation of an amorphous-nanocrystalline state in the alloy. Structural changes are also confirmed by the results of studies of the amorphous alloy surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy. After irradiation, both the number of crystal nuclei and their average size increase significantly (from 20 nm in the source alloy to 65 nm in the irradiated one). The changes in the number and size of crystal nuclei are explained by the fact that at an irradiation time of 45 minutes, the temperature in the regions of the ion tracks reaches threshold values and thermodynamic conditions are created for the growth of frozen crystallization centers. Introduction: Polynucleotides (PN) are becoming more prominent in aesthetic medicine. However, the structural characteristics of PN have not been published and PN from different companies may have different structural characteristics. This study aimed to elucidate the structural attributes of DOT™ PN and distinguish differences with polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN) using high‐resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. Materials and methods: DOT™ PN was examined using a Quanta 3‐D field emission gun (FEG) Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Sample preparation involved cryogenic cooling, cleavage, etching, and metal coating to facilitate high‐resolution imaging. Cryo‐FIB/SEM techniques were employed for in‐depth structural analysis. Results: PDRN exhibited an amorphous structure without distinct features. In contrast, DOT™ PN displayed well‐defined polyhedral shapes with smooth, uniformly thick walls. These cells were empty, with diameters ranging from 3 to 8 micrometers, forming a seamless tessellation pattern. Discussion: DOT™ PN's distinct geometric tessellation design conforms to the principles of biotensegrity, providing both structural reinforcement and integrity. The presence of delicate partitions and vacant compartments hints at possible uses in the field of pharmaceutical delivery systems. Within the realms of beauty enhancement and regenerative medicine, DOT™ PN's capacity to bolster cell growth and tissue mending could potentially transform approaches to rejuvenation treatments. Its adaptability becomes apparent when considering its contributions to drug administration and surgical procedures. Microplastics (MPs) pose a significant risk to humans and animals due to their ability to absorb, adsorb, and desorb organic pollutants. MPs catchment from either sediments or water bodies is crucial for risk assessment, but fast and effective particle quantification of irregularly shaped particles is only marginally addressed. Many studies used microscopy methods to count MP particles, which are tedious for large sample sizes. Alternatively, this work presents an algorithm developed in the free software GNU Octave to analyze microscope images of MP particles with variable sizes and shapes. The algorithm can detect and distinguish different particles, compensate for uneven illumination and low image contrast, find high-contrast areas, unify edge regions, and fill the remaining pixels of stacked particles. The fully automatic algorithm calculates shape parameters such as convexity, solidity, reciprocal aspect ratio, rectangularity, and the Feret major axis ratio and generates the particle size distribution. The study tested low-density polyethylene particles with sizes of 50–100 µm and 200–300 µm. A scanning electron microscope image series analyzed with Octave was compared to a manual evaluation using ImageJ. Although the fully automatic algorithm did not identify all particles, the comprehensive tests demonstrate a qualitatively accurate particle size and shape monitoring applicable to any MPs, which processes larger data sets in a short time and is compatible with MATLAB-based codes. Backscatter electron analysis from scanning electron microscopes (BSE-SEM) produces high-resolution image data of both rock samples and thin-sections, showing detailed structural and geochemical (mineralogical) information. This allows an in-depth exploration of the rock microstructures and the coupled chemical characteristics in the BSE-SEM image to be made using image processing techniques. Although image processing is a powerful tool for revealing the more subtle data "hidden" in a picture, it is not a commonly employed method in geoscientific microstructural analysis. The spatiotemporal evolution of photogenerated charge carriers on surfaces and at interfaces of photoactive materials is an important issue for understanding fundamental physical processes in optoelectronic devices and advanced materials. Conventional optical probe-based microscopes that provide indirect information about the dynamic behavior of photogenerated carriers are inherently limited by their poor spatial resolution and large penetration depth. Herein, we develop an ultrafast scanning electron microscope (USEM) with a planar emitter. The photoelectrons per pulse in this USEM can be two orders of magnitude higher than that of a tip emitter, allowing the capture of high-resolution spatiotemporal images. We used the contrast change of the USEM to examine the dynamic nature of surface carriers in an InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiode (APD) after femtosecond laser excitation. It was observed that the photogenerated carriers showed notable longitudinal drift, lateral diffusion, and carrier recombination associated with the presence of photovoltaic potential at the surface. Performing in situ scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests is an interesting way to visualise strain heterogeneities under mechanical loading. An essential step before performing the tests is to define the acquisition conditions. The aim of this paper is to propose a classification of the acquisition conditions that are most important for the accuracy of strain measurements using digital image correlation (DIC) in in situ SEM tests. More than 200 image pairs were acquired using a field emission gun SEM. The influence of different acquisition conditions was investigated: acceleration voltage, probe current, working distance, magnification, number of integrated images, image resolution, integration and number of integrated images, scan speed, contrast, brightness and exposure time of the sample in a given area. The methodology implemented in this work is an interesting tool for detecting scan line shift, drift distortion, spatial distortion and rastering artefacts. It allows the optimization of SEM acquisition conditions for strain measurements. Finally, optimal acquisition conditions for in situ testing are proposed and used to perform a tensile test on pure copper. The main factors highlighted include the size of the subset used in the DIC, the beam stabilisation time before image acquisition and the size of the images, which play a significant role in the results. Objective: Age‐related changes in the fiber structure around adipocytes were investigated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of excised skin tissues. In addition, the viscoelasticity of the subcutaneous fat layer was evaluated via elastography, and the association between the fiber structure and the viscoelastic properties was assessed. Methods: Skin tissues excised from the facial cheek area were used. Then, SEM images of these tissues were obtained. The thickness and quantity of the fibers around adipocytes were assessed using a 5‐point scale. The score was used to grade 18 tissue samples. Moreover, the viscoelasticity of the subcutaneous fat layer in the same samples was evaluated via ultrasound elastography. Results: Based on the SEM image score, an association was observed between the fiber status score and age, thereby indicating a tendency toward age‐related fibrosis. Fiber structures with high scores, which indicate fibrosis, had a significantly lower viscoelasticity based on ultrasound elastography. Conclusion: The thickness and quantity of fibrous structures around adipocytes in the subcutaneous fat layer increase with age, and these changes can be associated with decreased viscoelasticity in the subcutaneous fat layer. Ti3C2Tx/TiO2 composite materials were successfully prepared by hydrothermal reaction method. The phase structure and morphology of the samples were analyzed by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. The results show that TiO2 particles are evenly distributed between the layers and on the surface of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. The prepared composite materials were added to PAO6 base oil, and the MDW-02 friction and wear testing machine was used to study the effects of material addition concentration, working load and working speed on the tribological properties of lubricating oil. The friction test results show that the introduction of Ti3C2Tx/TiO2 composite material can reduce friction, and the maximum reduction of friction and wear was achieved under additive concentration of 1.0 wt%. By scanning electron microscopy analysis of the wear scars, it was confirmed that the prepared nanocomposites repaired the scratched surface and formed a uniform lubricating film, which helped to improve the tribological properties of the base oil. We report the preparation of surfactant-assisted carbon nanotube dispersions using gum arabic, Triton X-100, and graphene oxide as dispersing agents for removing rare earth elements in an aqueous solution. The analytical tools, including (a) scanning electron microscopy and (b) neutron activation analysis, were utilized for qualitative and quantitative examinations, respectively. Neutron activation analysis was employed to quantitatively determine the percent of extraction of nuclides onto the carbon structure, while the images produced from the scanning electron microscope allowed the morphological structure of the surfactant–CNT complex to be analyzed. This report tested the effects responsible for nuclide removal onto CNTs, including the adsorbent to target mass ratio, the CNT concentration and manufacturing process, the pH, and the ionic radius. This study examined the effects of milling parameters on the development of Ni/Al2O3 nanocomposites and the refinement of NiO and Al powders. Ball milling of certain mixtures was followed by sintering at 800 and 1100 °C for 2 h. The X-ray diffraction results of the dry-milled powders indicated that increasing the ball-to-powder weight ratio from 20:1 to 42:1 resulted in finer particles, which enabled the synthesis of Ni/Al2O3 nanocomposites by milling at 200 rpm for 1.5 h. Extending the milling duration at lower rotational speeds yielded powders with nanoscale particle sizes. However, as shown by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersion spectroscopy, a nanocomposite with metallic matrix was formed by the mechanochemical reaction, and the crystallite size was estimated using the Williamson--Hall plot. Furthermore, we used differential scanning calorimetry diagrams to analyze the effects of milling on the temperatures of phase transformation and/or reduction reactions. The tribological performance of the developed nickel metal matrix composite was investigated using a ball-on-disc tribometer under various loading conditions. Indeed, the friction coefficient increases with the applied forces and decreases with milling. The study of carbonate petrography is essential for understanding reservoir properties and the quality of rock formations. High-resolution cathodoluminescence spectroscopy and optical microscopy were used to determine the impact of cement on the porosity evolution of carbonate rocks of the Kurra Chine Formation at Sirwan Valley, Northern Iraq. This study represents the first-ever attempt to investigate sedimentology at this location. A total, of 183 thin-section slides, 18 X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) samples, 14 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) samples, and 6 Cathodoluminescence (CL) samples were analyzed from the outcrop section of the Kurra Chine Formation. Four types of dolomite textures are recognized and classified based on the crystal size distribution and crystalboundary shape. The porosity within Kurra Chine Formation includes primary and secondary porosity, with the majority of primary porosity being occluded by cementation. Cathodoluminescence analysis revealed two phases of calcite cement in the Kurra Chine Formation. The first phase (C1), is characterized by weak-zoned blocky calcite, displaying a dull luminescence with typical homogenous red color, which fills most of the interparticle and moldic pores. The second type of calcite cement (C2) is ghost-zoned calcite exhibiting red to slight orange luminesces interfingering with dolomite cement. XRD analysis indicated a predominant of calcite and common dolomite. SEM analysis revealed the predominance of secondary porosity occurring within fractures of the dolomite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the degree of mineralization as well of the chemical composition at the interface of failed dental implants with surrounding bone. Material and methods. The analysis was performed on human histological samples by the aid of a scanning electron microscope and an energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (ESEM-EDX). Results. The middle and the apical region of the implant surfaces had higher quantity of bone tissue deposition. A higher degree of mineralization was observed in these two regions as well. Conclusion. Changes in ambient temperature significantly affect the flexural properties of bamboo scrimber. From the perspective of structural safety, temperature is one of the most important conditions to be considered when using structural components made of bamboo scrimber. This experimental study investigated the flexural performance of bamboo scrimber across a broad temperature range of −30 °C to 250 °C, providing essential data for its use as a structural member under different temperature conditions. Through a series of tests conducted at different temperature conditions with utilization of scanning electron microscopy, the damage modes and failure mechanism of bamboo scrimber were analyzed at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. It was found that the failure modes of bamboo scrimber under different temperature conditions were mainly categorized as simple tensile fracture damage, split tensile damage and brittle tensile fracture damage, in which the brittle tensile fracture damage only occurred in the specimens at a temperature of 250 °C. In general, the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity decrease with increasing temperature; when the temperature was increased from 20 °C to 250 °C, the specimens' flexural strength and modulus of elasticity decreased by 87.95 % and 90.25 %, respectively. Microscopic analysis revealed that these variations were correlated with alterations in the shape, structure and composition of the internal cells. Promising mesoporous biocompatible hydrogels as successful wound healing bioadhesive were investigated. The novel bioadhesive composed of methacrylated flaxseed gum and 2,2′-(Ethylenedioxy) diethanethiol were synthesized via visbile light photocroaalinking using Thiol-Ene click chemistry. Wound healing issues like poor blood circulation, oxygen exchange, and easy elimination of exudates were treated via mesoporous structure of hydrogels followed using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda techniques and observed using scanning electron microscope images. Moreover, antimicrobial behavior, microbial suppression and non-toxicity of our hydrogel were confirmed via in-vitro hemolysis test, and finally evaluation of the efficiency of wound healing provided 97.5% at day 13, which confirm robust bioadhesive applications. The main components of the bioadhasive were thoroughly characterized using spectroscopic 1H-nuelear magnetic resonance and fourier transform infrared for diagnistic analysis, thermogravimetric analysis for thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy for topologic and mesoporosity evaluations. Optimal conditions for minimum gelation time were investigated sucha as ratio of methacrylated flaxseed gum to dithiol, concentration of photoinitiator, reaction temperature, and volume of deionized water. The injectable methacrylated flaxseed gum and 2,2′-(Ethylenedioxy) diethanethiol hydrogels demonstrated potential application as bioadhesive in biomedical and bioengineering applications, and more particularly in wound healing implementations. To characterize a mixture of powders using several analytical techniques, it is necessary that successive analyses be carried out on well-identified and localized particles, so that each characterization corresponds to a given powder. In this publication, powdered nuclear materials are characterized at the morphological and elemental levels with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) and at the chemical level with a micro-Raman spectrometer (MRS). However, to avoid a time-consuming and insufficiently accurate microparticle relocation process between SEM/EDS and MRS, micro-Raman analyses are carried out inside the SEM using a coupling device. In this way, all three pieces of information are obtained for exactly the same micrometric spot, without moving the sample or relocating the microparticles analyzed. The information can therefore be combined to characterize each component of the mixture. In this article, we describe in detail the methodology we have developed and optimized for morphological, elemental and chemical analysis of microparticles using a combined SEM/EDS and SRM. This methodology has been applied to powdered nuclear materials in two international nuclear forensics exercises. In the first exercise, named CMX-6, the combined use of the two instruments identified the presence of PuO 2 microparticles and several uranium compounds (UO 2 , U 3 O 8 , UO 2 F 2) in both materials. In the second exercise, called CMX-7, the methodology developed enabled us to distinguish two chemical phases of uranium, a uranyl oxy-hydroxide and a uranyl nitrate, each characterized by specific morphologies and the detection or non-detection of a minor elemental constituent (calcium). Efficient separation of actinide elements from molten salts employed in pyroprocessing can significantly diminish the radiological hazards and oversight duration associated with spent nuclear fuel storage. The lanthanum content of waste salts is very high compared to actinides, leading to the co-electrodeposition of both groups of elements for conventional electrochemical techniques. Due to the difficulty in separating the two groups of elements, the feasibility of the density-based separation using liquid bismuth and intermetallics was explored. Hafnium was used as a stand-in for actinide elements with physical properties mirroring those of actinide-laden Bi–Hf intermetallics. Conversely, cerium was chosen to represent lanthanides. This study delved into the formation and spatial distribution of bismuth intermetallics under varying concentration ratios and cooling durations. Comprehensive characterization was achieved using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry. The analysis showed that Bi–Ce particles were formed and distributed in the upper layer of the Bi ingot, and Bi-(Ce, Hf) particles containing both Ce and Hf in the lower layer. The findings underscore the viability of density-based separation while highlighting the intricacies related to intermetallic coprecipitation. Continued investigations are essential to fully harness the potential of density-based separation. Some nano- or micro-sized agglomerates with different morphologies in the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water binary system at different molar fractions were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) for the first time. Four fundamental clusters with the composition of [(DMSO) 2 ], [(DMSO) 3 ], [(DMSO) 2 ∙ H 2 O] and [(DMSO) 3 ∙ H 2 O] were identified through the combination of quantum mechanical calculations and vibrational spectroscopy. These clusters act as seeds for the growth of agglomerates both in pure DMSO and in DMSO-water binary mixtures. According to SEM images, the morphology of the agglomerates varies with the molar fraction, wherein two main kinds were observed, viz. one growing from the center and spreading out to the surrounding, and the other growing into a chain-like structure. Inter-cluster and/or inter-agglomerate interactions are responsible for the molar fraction dependence of density, viscosity and other related thermodynamic properties. The present work is the first to study the morphology of agglomerates in the DMSO-water binary system and the first to propose the essential roles played by four dominant clusters in the agglomerating process. Invasive fungal infections including invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) generally have a poor prognosis, because the fungi spread throughout various organs. Therefore, it is important to accurately identify the fungal species for treatment. In this article, we present the results of pathological and molecular morphological analyses that were performed to elucidate the cause of respiratory failure in a patient who died despite suspicion of IPA and treatment with micafungin (MCFG). Pathological analysis revealed the existence of cystic and linear fungi in lung tissue. The fungi were identified as Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) by partial sequencing of genomic DNA. Correlative light microscopy and electron microscopy (CLEM) analysis confirmed that fungi observed with light microscopy can also be observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections. SEM revealed an atypical ultrastructure of the fungi including inhomogeneous widths, rough surfaces, and numerous cyst-like structures of various sizes. The fungi showed several morphological changes of cultured A. fumigatus treated with MCFG that were previously reported. Our results indicate that integrated analysis of ultrastructural observation by SEM and DNA sequencing may be an effective tool for analyzing fungi that are difficult to identify by conventional pathological analysis. • Images taken by scanning electron microscope (SEM) are not just for displaying art, they should deliver scientific information. • Making standardization and quantification of backscattered electron images more accessible. • A new technique (ZEM) introduced here would make SEM capable of detecting light elements and compounds. Backscattered electron (BSE) imaging based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been widely used in scientific and industrial disciplines. However, achieving consistent standards and precise quantification in BSE images has proven to be a long-standing challenge. Previous methods incorporating dedicated calibration processes and Monte Carlo simulations have still posed practical limitations for widespread adoption. Here we introduce a bolometer platform that directly measures the absorbed thermal energy of the sample and demonstrates that it can help to analyze the atomic number (Z) of the investigated samples. The technique, named Atomic Number Electron Microscopy (ZEM), employs the conservation of energy as the foundation of standardization and can serve as a nearly ideal BSE detector. Our approach combines the strengths of both BSE and ZEM detectors, simplifying quantitative analysis for samples of various shapes and sizes. Liquid sodium–potassium alloy Na x K 100-x at. % (≈14 < x < 70 at room temperature) has been proposed as a dendrite-free liquid metal anode for Na-ion batteries. Nevertheless, controversy surrounds the use of Na x K 100-x as a Na-ion battery anode due to the presence of the two competitive redox-active species, Na/Na+ and K/K+. To resolve this ongoing controversy, we use x-ray diffraction (XRD) and cryogenic-focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (cryo-FIB/SEM) to investigate liquid Na 50 K 50 electrodes cycled in symmetric cells using Na-ion electrolytes. We find that the reaction overpotential abruptly increases after ≈ 40 cycles. Cryo-FIB/SEM reveals the precipitation of K salts, which confirms that K/K+ species are redox-active in Na-ion electrolytes. Such an effect progressively leads to irreversible leaching of K from the initial liquid Na 50 K 50 composition, resulting in a loss of liquid metal properties. The distribution and cycling of biogenic silica (BSi) and lithogenic silicon (LSi) in the ocean play crucial roles in the global silicon cycle and marine ecosystem dynamics. This is especially the case in the Southern Ocean where diatoms constitute the predominant phytoplankton and participate in a major way to the biological carbon pump. This study presents an assessment of BSi and LSi concentrations along the GEOTRACES South West Indian Ocean Section (SWINGS, late austral summer 2021), where several and contrasting regions were encountered: oligotrophic Mozambique basin, HNLC (High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll) areas and regions fertilized by the Subantarctic islands. Suspended particles were sampled from Niskin bottles and in situ pumps, along with scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations and specific pigments measurements to support BSi and LSi analyses. With samples coming from a contrasting study area prone to diverse continental influences, our BSi and LSi results showed a reproducibility of 13 ± 7%, in the same range as the established protocol. BSi concentrations show a north-south gradient with maxima encountered in the Antarctic Zone, and contrasted results between HNLC open ocean areas and naturally fertilized regions in the vicinity of the Subantarctic islands. Some open ocean stations have unusually high BSi (e.g. > 5 μmol L−1) likely resulting from fertilization by aerosols, upwelling or island mass effect when they are downstream of the islands. Coupling of BSi with SEM observations and pigments measurements respectively showed diatoms were the most representative of the carrying phase of BSi and suggested silicification changes, induced either by heavily silicified diatoms or by micronutrient limitation in HNLC regions. BSi is often dominated by the smallest size fraction (0.45–5 μm) which represent 47 ± 23% of the total BSi based on 29 measurements on size fractionated samples. LSi results highlighted atmospheric inputs at the surface and nepheloid layers in the water column, which makes LSi overall a good indicator of the origin of lithogenic materials. The surface faceting of metals has been studied for several decades, typically using experimental methods such as low-energy electron diffraction. In the current paper, surface faceting of tungsten pellets was studied during in situ heating inside an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM), which allowed for direct, high-fidelity observation of morphological changes in response to high-temperature annealing under a moderate vacuum (0.8 Torr). Additionally, a second set of tungsten samples was annealed in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber (10−8 Torr), albeit without direct observation via ESEM. This study revealed that oxygen plays a crucial role in tungsten surface faceting and in a morphological transition to vertex rounding. Furthermore, this paper discusses relevant techniques for identifying the crystallographic indices of surface facets. It is demonstrated that a combination of electron backscatter diffraction, tilted-sample imaging from multiple angles, and serial sectioning in a focused ion beam system can be effectively deployed to determine the geometry of faceting, which in turn can be verified with the aid of software for generating Wulff shapes. The waste transfer lines at the United States Department of Energy's Hanford Site Tank Farm in Benton County, Washington, USA have flexible sections that are fabricated from ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) hoses. The hoses are of a hose-in-hose design with an inner hose that carries the waste and an outer hose that acts as containment in the event of an inner hose failure. During waste transport, the inner hoses are exposed to several stressors including caustic solutions at high temperatures and high pressures. These hose-in-hose transfer lines (HIHTL) are exposed to several stressors including caustic solutions at high temperatures and high pressures during the waste transport. The aging behavior of the HIHTL inner hose were evaluated by exposure to solutions at 77 °C containing 6.25, 12.50, and 25.00% (v/v) sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for 12-months. After the exposure, the burst pressure of the HIHTL specimens were measured and compared to the unaged samples. The burst pressure of the HIHTL specimens exposed to the 6.25% NaOH solution exhibited the most significant deterioration and those exposed to 25.00% NaOH solution had the least deterioration. Examination of the inside surface of the HIHTL specimens with scanning electron microscopy showed that the surface deterioration for the specimens exposed to 6.25% NaOH solution were the most severe and the samples exposed to 25.00% NaOH solution had the least deterioration. Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis of the specimens showed that the specimen aged with the 6.25% NaOH solution had that greatest sodium ion penetration into the material with the sodium concentration being significantly higher than those seen with the other specimens.
