Electronic paper (e‐paper) is a reflective display technology with unique advantages, such as bistability, low‐power consumption, and high ambient contrast ratio. These features make e‐paper a promising candidate for future Internet of Things applications. Among different technologies of e‐paper, electrophoretic display (EPD) is the most successful one for commercialization. However, the edge ghosting (also known as the fringing effect) still limits the performance of EPD. Herein, we established a model of particle dynamics of electrophoresis, simulated the edge ghosting of microcapsule EPD, analyzed the edge ghosting effect, and revealed the relationship between thicknesses, dielectric constants of the back binder layer, and the edge ghosting. Two EPD panels with different thicknesses of back binder layer were demonstrated, which verifies the accuracy of this simulation model. With the proposed model, many device mechanisms and product issues can be analyzed and illustrated, which is supposed to guide the researchers in optimizing the device structure design of EPD. The Internet of Things (IoT) has witnessed remarkable growth, leading to the emergence of numerous applications and services. However, energy efficiency remains a critical concern in IoT networks due to the resource-constrained nature of many IoT devices. Energy-efficient routing protocols play a pivotal role in mitigating this challenge, optimizing energy consumption, and extending the operational lifetime of IoT deployments. This survey paper aims to provide a holistic understanding of the state-of-the-art approaches, their characteristics, strengths, limitations, and performance metrics. The survey encompasses a wide range of energy-efficient routing protocols proposed in the literature, including traditional routing protocols adapted for IoT scenarios and protocols specifically tailored for energy optimization. We discuss the impact of different network characteristics on the performance of energy-efficient routing protocols, such as network size, node density, mobility, and heterogeneity. Through this systematic survey, we aim to provide researchers, engineers, and practitioners with a comprehensive overview of energy-efficient routing protocols for IoT networks. The survey findings can serve as a valuable reference for protocol selection, performance evaluation, and the development of novel energy-efficient routing strategies in future IoT deployments. Internet of Things (IoT) architectures generally focus on providing consistent performance and reliable communications. The convergence of IoT, edge, fog, and cloud aims to improve the quality of service of applications, which does not typically emphasize energy efficiency. Considering energy in IoT architectures would reduce the energy impact from billions of IoT devices. The research presented in this paper proposes an optimization framework that considers energy consumption of nodes when selecting a node for processing an IoT request in edge-fog-cloud layered architecture. The IoT use cases considered in this paper include smart grid, autonomous vehicles, and eHealth. The proposed framework is evaluated using CPLEX simulations. The results provide insights into mechanisms that can be used to select nodes energy-efficiently whilst meeting the application requirements and other network constraints in multi-layered IoT architectures. In the past few years the use of IoT devices has grown exponentially. When it comes to working with them, we find a series of problems that are not easy to solve. On the one hand, the simple fact of communicating with those devices can be problematic since they can use different types of technologies regarding that communication. On the other hand, these types of devices usually aim to perform their function using the lowest possible energy, meaning they have certain constraints in terms of performance. Trying to work with these devices in high-availability environments becomes difficult because of those restraints. This paper introduces digital dice, a virtual representation of IoT devices and cyber-physical systems based on microservices that uses the standard established by the W3C, the Web of Things, as the underlying framework to declare its possible interactions. The article puts forward the different strategies that Digital Dice uses to mitigate the problems raised. This work aims to explore the potentialities of an end-user personalisation platform in industrial settings. In such a context, stakeholders with different roles and competencies collaborate to manage and control an environment where legacy machines coexist and interact with newer ones. Our goal is to provide a rule-based tool that allows end-users to build personalised solutions to respond quickly to the dynamic needs of factories. We report on a case study in the paper factory domain, in which the industrial aspects identified with expert stakeholders through interviews have been simulated and addressed through an extension of a personalisation platform. A first user test of the resulting environment has been carried out with a representative set of users, and has provided useful and encouraging feedback in terms of the potentialities of the proposed approach in industrial contexts. Climate-change-induced unpredictable weather patterns are adversely affecting global agricultural productivity, posing a significant threat to sustainability and food security, particularly in developing regions. Wealthier nations can invest substantially in measures to mitigate climate change's impact on food production, but economically disadvantaged countries face challenges due to limited resources and heightened susceptibility to climate change. To enhance climate resilience in agriculture, technological solutions such as the Internet of Things (IoT) are being explored. This paper introduces a digital twin as a technological solution for monitoring and controlling temperatures in a greenhouse tunnel situated in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The study incorporates an aeroponics trial within the tunnel, analysing temperature variations caused by the fan and wet wall temperature regulatory systems. The research develops an analytical model and employs a support vector regression algorithm as an empirical model, successfully achieving accurate predictions. The analytical model demonstrated a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.93 °C and an R 2 value of 0.8, while the empirical model outperformed it with an RMSE of 1.76 °C and an R 2 value of 0.9 for a one-hour-ahead simulation. ABSTRACT Shadow is a lightweight AND‐RX block cipher adapted for resource‐constrained devices. In this paper, software and hardware optimizations are proposed respectively for Shadow to enhance its implementation performance. For software optimization, this paper first proposes a data pre‐processing scheme based on the structural characteristics of the round function. It further improves the optimization effect of the barrel shifter instruction while simplifying the implementation process of the round function. Note that the optimization strategy is also applicable to other AND‐RX ciphers. Secondly, this paper proposes a new NX operation implementation scheme that can effectively reduce its instruction cycles. In round‐based architecture, experimental results show that our scheme effectively reduces code size by 24.7%, Flash consumption by 12.6%, and total instruction cycles by 25.1%. Meanwhile, in the fully unrolled architecture, our scheme reduces code size by 30.8%, Flash consumption by 29.8%, and total instruction cycles by 28.1%. For hardware optimization, this paper proposes a low‐resource implementation scheme by constructing a generic formula for NX operation. In ASIC implementation, our scheme reduces hardware resources by 72.3%. In FPGA implementation, the number of LUTs and Slices is reduced by 30% and 28.6%, respectively. Optimal resource allocation is crucial for 5G and beyond networks, especially when connecting numerous IoT devices. In this paper, user clustering and power allocation challenges in the downlink of a multi-carrier NOMA system are investigated, with sum rate as the optimization objective. The paper presents an iterative optimization process, starting with user clustering followed by power allocation of the users. Although the simultaneous transmission for multiple users achieves high system throughput in NOMA, it leads to more energy consumption, which is limited by the battery capacity of IoT devices. Enhancing energy efficiency by considering the QoS requirement is a primary challenge in NOMA-enabled IoT devices. Currently, fixed user clustering techniques are proposed without considering the diversity and heterogeneity of channels, leading to poor throughput performance. The proposed user clustering technique is based on the partial brute force search (P-BFS) method, which reduces complexity compared to the traditional exhaustive search method. After the user clustering, we performed optimal power allocation using the Lagrangian multiplier method with Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimal conditions for each user assigned to a subchannel in each cluster. Lastly, a deep neural network (DNN) based proposed P-BFS scheme is used to reduce resource allocation's complexity further. The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a crucial area of modern research. While the increasing number of IoT devices has driven significant advancements, it has also introduced several challenges, such as data storage, data privacy, communication protocols, complex network topologies, and IoT device management. In essence, the management of IoT devices is becoming more and more challenging, especially with the limited capacity and power of the IoT devices. The devices, having limited capacities, cannot store the information of the entire environment at once. In addition, device power consumption can affect network performance and stability. The devices' sensing areas with device grouping and management can simplify further networking tasks and improve response quality with data aggregation and correction techniques. In fact, most research papers are looking forward to expanding network lifetimes by relying on devices with high power capabilities. This paper proposes a device spatial clustering technique that covers crucial challenges in IoT. Our approach groups the dispersed devices to create clusters of connected devices while considering their coverage, their storage capacities, and their power. A new clustering protocol alongside a new clustering algorithm is introduced, resolving the aforementioned challenges. Moreover, a technique for non-sensed area extraction is presented. The efficiency of the proposed approach has been evaluated with extensive experiments that gave notable results. This paper introduces a sophisticated approach to network security, with a primary emphasis on utilizing deep learning for intrusion detection. In real-world scenarios, the high dimensionality of training data poses challenges for simple deep learning models and can lead to vanishing gradient issues with complex neural networks. Additionally, uploading network traffic data to a central server for training raises privacy concerns. To tackle these issues, the paper introduces a Residual Network (ResNet)-based deep learning model trained using a federated learning approach. The ResNet effectively tackles the vanishing gradient problem, while federated learning enables multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or clients to engage in joint training without sharing their data with third parties. This approach enhances accuracy through collaborative learning while maintaining privacy. Experimental results on the X-IIoTID dataset indicate that the proposed model outperforms conventional deep learning and machine learning methods in terms of accuracy and other metrics used for evaluation. In the Energy-Harvesting (EH) Cognitive Internet of Things (EH-CIoT) network, due to the broadcast nature of wireless communication, the EH-CIoT network is susceptible to jamming attacks, which leads to a serious decrease in throughput. Therefore, this paper investigates an anti-jamming resource-allocation method, aiming to maximize the Long-Term Throughput (LTT) of the EH-CIoT network. Specifically, the resource-allocation problem is modeled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) without prior knowledge. On this basis, this paper carefully designs a two-dimensional reward function that includes throughput and energy rewards. On the one hand, the Agent Base Station (ABS) intuitively evaluates the effectiveness of its actions through throughput rewards to maximize the LTT. On the other hand, considering the EH characteristics and battery capacity limitations, this paper proposes energy rewards to guide the ABS to reasonably allocate channels for Secondary Users (SUs) with insufficient power to harvest more energy for transmission, which can indirectly improve the LTT. In the case where the activity states of Primary Users (PUs), channel information and the jamming strategies of the jammer are not available in advance, this paper proposes a Linearly Weighted Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (LWDDPG) algorithm to maximize the LTT. The LWDDPG is extended from DDPG to adapt to the design of the two-dimensional reward function, which enables the ABS to reasonably allocate transmission channels, continuous power and work modes to the SUs, and to let the SUs not only transmit on unjammed channels, but also harvest more RF energy to supplement the battery power. Integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) in smart cities can solve rapid urbanization. It will provide better urban services, addressing urban problems that develop because of enhancing urbanization without establishing policies focusing on well-being. The present investigation explores the growing trend of the dynamic publications associated with the advanced technologies integrated into smart city publication productivity using bibliometric analysis. This approach enables the detection of the usage history, the usage scheme, and the research landscape topic in scientific papers on IoT in smart cities. This study included 976 articles from 2013 to 2023. The area of research in smart cities is categorized into six important clusters: (1) IoT application areas in smart cities, (2) IoT infrastructure for smart cities, (3) IoT security and privacy for smart cities, (4) IoT architecture for smart cities, (5) IoT technologies and communication protocol for smart cities, (6) IoT data analysis for smart cities. Moreover, this study reveals that the issues related to new technologies, security, and privacy of IoT to integrate into smart cities would be an interesting topic for future research. The technological revolution brought by the Internet of Things (IoT) has mostly relied on cloud computing. However, to satisfy the demands of time-sensitive services in the medical industry, fog computing, a novel computational platform based on the cloud computing paradigm, has shown to be a useful tool by extending cloud resources to the network's edge. The current paper examines the role of the fog paradigm in the domain of healthcare decision-making, focusing on its primary advantages in terms of latency, network utilization, and power consumption. A fog-computing-based health assessment framework is developed in the current paper. Moreover, based on effective performance parameters, the performance is evaluated and depicted. The results show that the presented strategy can reduce network congestion of the communication network by analyzing information at the local node. Moreover, increased security on health information can be maintained at local fog node, and enhanced data protection from unauthorized access can be acquired. The Internet of Things is an important element of Industry 4.0, which has brought innovative technological contributions to the energy sector; Industry 4.0 allows organisations to transition to intelligent companies through the use of the Internet of Things and technologies that favour manufacturing and production processes to be more efficient. The aim of this paper is to identify how the application of the Internet of Things has had benefits in the energy sector. This paper presents a literature review in a traditional way, to identify the importance of the Internet of Things and its application in the energy sector in the field of wind, solar, hydroelectric, and fossil energy. The analysis of the literature shows that there are studies that indicate the benefit of the internet of Things in the energy sector, with 48 documents being recognised, of which 25 publications belong to the year 2022. This research paper explores the realm of fault detection in distributed motors through the vision of the Internet of electrical drives. This paper aims at employing artificial neural networks supported by the data collected by the Internet of distributed devices. Cross-verification of results offers reliable diagnosis of industrial motor faults. The proposed methodology involves the development of a cyber–physical system architecture and mathematical modeling framework for efficient fault detection. The mathematical model is designed to capture the intricate relationships within the cyber–physical system, incorporating the dynamic interactions between distributed motors and their edge controllers. Fast Fourier transform is employed for signal processing, enabling the extraction of meaningful frequency features that serve as indicators of potential faults. The artificial neural network based fault detection system is integrated with the solution, utilizing its ability to learn complex patterns and adapt to varying motor conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed framework and model is demonstrated through experimental results. Composite materials are increasingly important in making high-performance products. However, contemporary composites manufacturing processes still encounter significant challenges that range from inherent material stochasticity to manufacturing process variabilities. This paper proposes a novel smart Industrial Internet of Things framework, which is also referred to as an Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) framework for composites manufacturing. This framework improves production performance through real-time process monitoring and AI-based forecasting. It comprises three main components: (i) an array of temperature, heat flux, dielectric, and flow sensors for data acquisition from production machines and products being made, (ii) an IoT-based platform for instantaneous sensor data integration and visualisation, and (iii) an AI-based model for production process forecasting. Via these components, the framework performs real-time production process monitoring, visualisation, and prediction of future process states. Sensors are very import parts of the IoT (Internet of Things). To detect the cleaning loss of combine harvesters during operation, a new detection method based on acoustic signal was proposed. The simulation models of the impact among grain, stem and plate were established by using the ALE algorithm, and the vibration excitation characteristics of the grain and stem were investigated; the results showed that both grain and stem signal were generated by surface vibration's excitation of the air, and the highest amplitudes of grain and stem signal were 15 kHz and 7 kHz respectively, which made it possible to distinguish grain and stem impact acoustic signals. Therefore, this paper proposed a novel method to separate the grain and stem signals by identifying the characteristic frequency area and subsequently an improved EMD denoising method based on an autocorrelation function was proposed. The critical stratum of EMD was identified based on the autocorrelation value of the eigenmode function, and the improved de-noising method was able to effectively remove the noise and the stem signal. To verify the feasibility of the improved denoising method, a field wheat harvesting experiment was conducted to acquire the actual acoustic signal of the cleaning operation. Data processing results showed that the average error of the comparison between the detected loss amount and the actual loss amount was 6.1%. The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) promises to revolutionize transportation in smart cities, but its interconnectedness raises critical security and privacy concerns. Limited computational power, diverse network technologies, and many sensors and vehicles challenge data integrity and trust in data exchange. Existing solutions, often dependent on specific environments and protocols, struggle to address these issues across the entire IoV ecosystem. This paper explores the potential of blockchain technology to address these challenges. We argue that blockchain's immutability and decentralization offer a unique solution for trust management in various IoV environments. We review existing blockchain-based algorithms and models proposed for IoV integration and propose a novel taxonomy to categorize these approaches. This taxonomy will help us analyze effective parameters, implementation methods, and evaluation metrics in the reviewed literature. According to our research, the most critical evaluation parameter for blockchain-based methods is time, including system-level service-related time parameters and solution implementation time, and 38% of existing papers simulated the approach using Hyperledger. Additionally, we will identify key challenges from integrating blockchain into the IoV landscape. By providing a comprehensive review and analysis of blockchain-based trust management solutions for IoV, this paper aims to contribute to the ongoing development of secure and reliable intelligent transportation systems. With the increasing number of terminal devices in the sensor network and the Internet of things, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) will be widely used in the future to improve spectrum resource utilization. In this paper, we considered how to control massive devices in the downlink in of scenario of space-based Internet of Things (S-IoT). In the case of multiple base stations (BSs), user fairness is a difficult problem, which usually requires a traversal algorithm to achieve the optimal solution. However, the time complexity caused by this method is the product of the complexity of user grouping and power allocation, which is unbearable. We split the problem into two sub-problems changing complexity from product form to additive form, and solve them by using low time complexity algorithms respectively. Firstly, we use a threshold-based algorithm to implement user grouping, and then use a bisection iterative algorithm for power allocation. In the simulation, we compared design with several benchmarks and results show that the minimum user rate is significantly improved and closed to optimal value by using proposed algorithm in this paper. A solar tracking mechanism, utilizing light-dependent sensors and servo motors, dynamically adjusts panel orientation based on the sun's angle of elevation and direction. This research contributes to the advancement of efficient and sustainable solar energy systems. The intrusion detection system is responsible for revealing different intrusion activities, including the denial of service, man-in-middle, Mirai, Scan, and other types of intrusion activities. It is used in many applications, including the smart home Internet of Things networks, where security risks threaten the privacy of individuals. In this context, many works were proposed for detecting and classifying the different types of attacks. However, many challenges are identified for this type of problem, such as the large amount of data available, the imbalanced nature of the data, and the quality of detection and classification outcomes. This paper aims to address these challenges by proposing an approach that considers a metaheuristic-based random weight neural network to detect intrusion activities and classify the different types and subtypes of activities. The following points summarize the contribution of this paper. First, the automatic tuning of the neural network parameters where the weights, biases, regularization value, the number of neurons, and the type of activation function are optimized by different metaheuristic algorithms to produce high-quality results. Second, the proposed approach adopts a clustering with reduction technique to tackle the challenge of processing large volumes of data. Third, oversampling the dataset is also embedded in the proposed approach to avoid a biased classification of the majority class. The experiments are conducted based on a large dataset with more than half a million instances. Climbing gyms aim to continuously improve their offerings and make the best use of their infrastructure to provide a unique experience for their clients, the climbers. One approach to achieve this goal is to track and analyze climbing sessions from the beginning of the ascent until the climber's descent. Detecting the climber's descent is crucial because it indicates when the ascent has ended. This paper discusses an approach that preserves climber privacy (e.g., not using cameras) while considering the convenience of climbers and the costs to the gyms. To this aim, a hardware prototype has been developed to collect data using accelerometer sensors attached to a piece of climbing equipment mounted on the wall, called a quickdraw, which connects the climbing rope to the bolt anchors. The sensors are configured to be energy-efficient, making them practical in terms of expenses and time required for replacement when used in large quantities in a climbing gym. This paper describes the hardware specifications, studies data measured by the sensors in ultra-low power mode, detects sensors' orientation patterns during descent on different routes, and develops a supervised approach to identify lowering. This paper aims to examine the effects of digital technologies on academic knowledge production in the field of urban research. It provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of technology-based urban research literature, delineates the knowledge structure, and investigates prevalent trends. The study employs bibliometric analysis to analyze bibliographical and textual data extracted from scientific documents, which allows for the discovery of the existing epistemological structure of the discipline or research domain. The research was conducted by conducting a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the literature available in the Web of Science Core Collection regarding how concepts such as big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) are discussed in academic papers in the field of urban studies. A total of 2055 academic papers that met the established criteria were identified and analyzed using bibliometric analysis software called Bibliometrix. LoRa enables long-range communication for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, especially those with limited resources and low power requirements. Consequently, LoRa has emerged as a popular choice for numerous IoT applications. However, the security of LoRa devices is one of the major concerns that requires attention. Existing device identification mechanisms use cryptography which has two major issues: (1) cryptography is hard on the device resources and (2) physical attacks might prevent them from being effective. Deep learning-based radio frequency fingerprinting identification (RFFI) is emerging as a key candidate for device identification using hardware-intrinsic features. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in the area of deep learning-based radio frequency fingerprinting identification for LoRa devices. We discuss various categories of radio frequency fingerprinting techniques along with hardware imperfections that can be exploited to identify an emitter. Furthermore, we describe different deep learning algorithms implemented for the task of LoRa device classification and summarize the main approaches and results. We discuss several representations of the LoRa signal used as input to deep learning models. Additionally, we provide a thorough review of all the LoRa RF signal datasets used in the literature and summarize details about the hardware used, the type of signals collected, the features provided, availability, and size. Finally, we conclude this paper by discussing the existing challenges in deep learning-based LoRa device identification and also envisage future research directions and opportunities. This paper discusses the design and implementation of a portable IoT station. Communication and data synchronization issues in several installations are addressed here, making possible a detailed analysis of the entire system during its operation. The system operator requires a synchronized data stream, combining multiple communication protocols into one single time stamp. The hardware selected for the portable IoT station complies with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) industrial standards. A short discussion regarding interface customization shows how easily the hardware can be modified so that it is integrated with almost any system. A programmable logic controller enables the Node-RED to be utilized. This open-source middleware defines operations for each global variable nominated in the Modbus register. Two applications are presented and discussed in this paper; each application has a distinct methodology utilized to publish and visualize the acquired data. The portable IoT station is highly customizable, consisting of a modular structure and providing the best platform for future research and development of dedicated algorithms. This paper also demonstrates how the portable IoT station can be implemented in systems where time-based data synchronization is essential while introducing a seamless implementation and operation. In the development of the Power Industry Internet of Things, the security of data interaction has always been an important challenge. In the power-based blockchain Industrial Internet of Things, node data interaction involves a large amount of sensitive data. In the current anti-leakage strategy for power business data interaction, regular expressions are used to identify sensitive data for matching. This approach is only suitable for simple structured data. For the processing of unstructured data, there is a lack of practical matching strategies. Therefore, this paper proposes a deep learning-based anti-leakage method for power business data interaction, aiming to ensure the security of power business data interaction between the State Grid business platform and third-party platforms. This method combines named entity recognition technologies and comprehensively uses regular expressions and the DeBERTa (Decoding-enhanced BERT with disentangled attention)-BiLSTM (Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory)-CRF (Conditional Random Field) model. This method is based on the DeBERTa (Decoding-enhanced BERT with disentangled attention) model for pre-training feature extraction. It extracts sequence context semantic features through the BiLSTM, and finally obtains the global optimal through the CRF layer tag sequence. Sensitive data matching is performed on interactive structured and unstructured data to identify privacy-sensitive information in the power business. The experimental results show that the F1 score of the proposed method in this paper for identifying sensitive data entities using the CLUENER 2020 dataset reaches 81.26%, which can effectively prevent the risk of power business data leakage and provide innovative solutions for the power industry to ensure data security. In order to improve the security and performance of the oral English instant translation model, this paper optimizes the instant translation model through the Internet of Things (IoT) security technology and deep learning technology. In this paper, the real-time translation model based on deep learning and IoT technology is analyzed in detail to show the application of these two technologies in the real-time translation model, and the related information security issues are discussed. Meanwhile, this paper proposes a method combining deep learning network and IoT technology to further improve the security of instant translation model. The experimental results show that under the optimized model, the parameter upload time is 60 seconds, the aggregation calculation time is 6.5 seconds, and the authentication time is 7.5 seconds. Moreover, the average recognition accuracy of the optimized model reaches 93.1%, and it is superior to the traditional machine translation method in accuracy and real-time, which has wide practical value and application prospects. A massive number of Internet-of-things (IoT) devices communicate with each other in a wireless network for applications like smart cities, smart classrooms and smart agriculture. The real-time information exchange between these massive IoT nodes require connectivity and coverage. Advanced wireless techniques, cooperation among the communicating nodes and use of relays are fast emerging. But, increasing the communication reliability without adding to the energy or hardware overhead is the main challenge for these relay enabled massive IoT networks. Use of large number of relay nodes, antennas, radio-frequency (RF) transceiver chains in the cooperative communication enabled network increases the hardware complexity of the system. This paper addresses this challenge by proposing an energy efficient resource management model. The proposed resource optimization framework enables selection of optimal relay node and optimal number of antennas at the mobile node such that the system outage performance is improved. It is analysed that the resource optimization improves the outage probability by 12% at transmit power of 10dB at source node. The impact of increasing the number of node antennas on system ergodic capacity is also highlighted. The presented analysis finds applications in 6G enabled smart cities for seamless multimedia communication. As compared to existing systems with no resource optimization, the paper claims that incorporating resource optimization also results in huge energy savings at the mobile nodes.
