Shunt power capacitors are essential to system operation and reliability as a critical reactive power source to increase system capacity, support voltage magnitude, improve power quality, and reduce reactive current flow. To mitigate capbank switching transients, the synchronous switching with preinsertion resistor technology is developed and used at an extra-high voltage transmission system. In this paper, the coupling relationship between several key factors that contribute to switching transients is studied. Optimization solutions are developed to improve the switching process. Chemical looping combustion is a promising energy conversion technology for fossil fuel combustion with inherent carbon dioxide separation and minimum energy losses. A full understanding of the dynamic behavior is of paramount importance to successfully implement this technology at commercial scale. In this work, a dynamic mathematical model has been developed to simulate interconnected fluidized bed reactors of a 1 MW th syngas-based chemical looping combustion process with iron based oxygen carrier. The model consists of mass and energy balances equations as well as the equations that describe the hydrodynamics and heat transfer processes. The particles distribution inside the fluidized bed reactors is described by a 1.5-D hydrodynamic model. The model showed two zones in axial direction (an upper lean zone and a bottom dense zone) and a horizontal separation between core region and wall layer. Different heat transfer mechanisms have been taken into account: convection between gas phase and the oxygen carrier particles; convection of the moving particle phase with wall and radiation. The developed model was used to predict (in space and time): gas and solid velocity distribution, gas composition distribution, behavior of oxygen carrier, and temperature profiles inside the air and fuel reactor. The increased impact from fluctuating energy sources like wind and photovoltaics significantly affects the operational regime of conventional power plants. In the near future, even former base load power plants such as the large-scale lignite plants in Germany will need to start and shut down to balance the electricity system. As frequent starts were not in the focus of optimisation in the past, an extensive potential can be expected to reduce start-up costs and environmental impacts. In order to investigate such optimisation potentials, a comprehensive dynamic simulation model has been developed including process components such as boiler and water-steam cycle but also the power plants control system along with start-up sequence control. After successfully reproducing a reference start of the power plant, the model has been used to identify restrictions for faster start-ups, less fuel consumption and less emission while keeping the thermal and mechanical stress, caused by higher ramp rates, within acceptable bounds. Gearbox is one of the most important parts of rotating machinery, therefore, it is vital to carry out health monitoring for gearboxes. However, it is still an unsolved problem to disclose the impact of gear tooth crack fault on gear system vibration features during the crack propagating process, besides effective crack fault mode detection methods are lacked. In this study, an analytical model is proposed to calculate the time varying mesh stiffness of the meshing gear pair, and in this model the tooth bending stiffness, shear stiffness, axial compressive stiffness, Hertzian contact stiffness and fillet-foundation stiffness are taken into consideration. Afterwards, the vibration mechanism and effects of different levels of gear tooth crack on the gear system dynamics are investigated based on a 6 DOF dynamic model. Then, the crack fault vibration mode is studied, and a parametrical-Laplace wavelet method is presented to describe the crack fault mode. Furthermore, based on the maximum correlation coefficient (MCC) criterion, the optimized Laplace wavelet base is determined, which is then designed as a health indicator to detect the crack fault. The results show that the proposed method is effective in fault diagnosis of severe tooth crack as well as the early stage tooth crack. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A MEMS inertial switch with flexible electrodes to contact-enhanced is designed and fabricated. ANSYS software is used to simulate the displacement of the mass, deformation of the flexible electrode and contact time of the switch. A high-speed video measurement has been used to visualize the switch contact process instead of electrical measurement for a deeper understanding of the dynamic contact process, and these images are used to visually validate simulation results. Comparisons between the simulation and image results are discussed. The image results are seen to be in good agreement with the dynamics simulation results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on the impacts of renewable energy policy on a large-scale power generation system, including thermal power, hydropower, and wind power generation. As one of the most important clean energy, wind energy has been rapidly developed in the world. But in recent years there is a serious waste of wind power equipment and investment in China leading to many problems in the industry from wind power planning to its integration. One way overcoming the difficulty is to analyze the influence of wind power policy on a generation system. This paper builds a system dynamics (SD) model of energy generation to simulate the results of wind energy generation policies based on a complex system. And scenario analysis method is used to compare the effectiveness and efficiency of these policies. The case study shows that the combinations of lower portfolio goal and higher benchmark price and those of higher portfolio goal and lower benchmark price have large differences in both effectiveness and efficiency. On the other hand, the combinations of uniformly lower or higher portfolio goal and benchmark price have similar efficiency, but different effectiveness. Finally, an optimal policy combination can be chosen on the basis of policy analysis in the large-scale power system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
