The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is suffering from a substantial decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in exorheic basins, threatening water resources that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. TWS changes are commonly estimated using gravity satellites through observations of the total terrestrial mass storage (TMS) change, with an implicit assumption of a negligible contribution from sediment transport. Through long‐term (2002–2017) sediment flux observations in seven headwater basins on the TP, we reveal that the gravity satellite‐derived TMS has decreased at a rate of 3.85 ± 0.23 Gt yr−1 in the seven basins, of which 0.35 ± 0.04 Gt yr−1 is contributed by sediment transport. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by 10.1 ± 1.3%, equivalent to the annual water demand of an additional 0.62 million people in the surrounding nations. Regionally, the overestimation is surprisingly high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins, reaching up to 50.8%–77.6%. The battering of bedrock by bedload collisions is the primary mechanism by which bedrock rivers erode and landscapes evolve. The energy imparted via impacts acts to detach bedrock via the growth and intersection of surface fractures. We present impact experiments designed to test the influence of particle impact energy on bedrock erosion rates. We found that erosional efficiency increased with increasing impact energy. Notably, these increases in efficiency are not captured by a widely‐used mechanistic bedrock erosion model. Observed increases in erosional efficiency were linked with enhanced elastic energy dissipation captured by differences in the coefficient of restitution. We suggest that this increase in energy dissipation is indicative of enhanced crack extension for high velocity impacts. Our experiments indicate a clear energy‐dependence for bedrock detachment processes that is not yet captured by bedrock incision models but may be integrated into long‐term erosion rates and landscape evolution. We designed an experiment where we hit a bedrock sample with a steel ball at a range of impact energies, over and over again, up to 30,000 times, and measured how much material was chipped away. High energy impacts eroded more material, but this increased efficiency of erosion is not fully captured by impact‐based erosion models. We hypothesize that for higher energy impacts, a larger fraction of the incoming energy is used to crack the bedrock, more easily eroding material. We liken the relative influence of these high energy impacts to a battering ram, where only a few strikes can easily break down a door, whereas lower energy impacts, similar to a simple knock, are unlikely to achieve the same result. We suggest that this effect may be important in determining the influence of extreme events on bedrock erosion over long timescales. Previous studies have demonstrated that vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion rate and reduce the velocity threshold for erosion of non‐cohesive sediment. This study considered whether vegetation‐generated turbulence had a similar influence on natural cohesive sediment. Cores were collected from a black mangrove forest with aboveground biomass and exposed to stepwise increases in velocity. Erosion was recorded through suspended sediment concentration. For the same velocity, cores with pneumatophores had elevated turbulent kinetic energy compared to bare cores without pneumatophores. However, the vegetation‐generated turbulence did not increase bed stress or the rate of resuspension, relative to bare cores. It was hypothesized that the short time‐scale fluctuations associated with vegetation‐generated turbulence were not of sufficient duration to break cohesion between grains, explaining why elevated levels of turbulence associated with the pneumatophores had no impact on the erosion threshold or rate. This article reviews research on sediment flux impacts on the receiving estuary, ports, and society in Cartagena, Colombia. The city hosts both the country's largest touristic and coastal industrial sectors and is home to vulnerable coastal communities whose health and livelihoods are impacted by pollution. These marginalized artisanal fishing communities lack basic water and health services but have finally been recognized in a new intersectoral committee for Cartagena Bay's environmental management. To support the governance of these complex socioenvironmental challenges, the Cartagena Bay Observatory has been developed as a scientific tool to monitor the bay's conditions and forecast the effects of future sediment remediation plans. Cartagena Bay receives large freshwater discharges from the Dique Canal, draining from the 260,000 km2 Magdalena River watershed where 80% of the national population resides. This runoff transports sediment loads of 2.3 Mt/year, dispersing large plumes that affect the marine ecosystems and tourism and make the bay one of the Caribbean's largest sediment‐receiving estuaries. Following decades of watershed deforestation and erosion, the upward trending sediment inputs and accretion of the Dique delta have resulted in deposition rates of 1.8 cm/year, and the need for frequent dredging. Mercury dumped by a chemical industry in the 1970s can be found in concentrations as high as 18.8 μg/g buried below the bay's bottom. Mercury has also been found in the bay's biota and human populations, and so the dredging needed for the port's sustainability thereby presents a health risk by allowing this trapped mercury to surface. This study identifies and summarizes potential risks to operations, regulatory compliance, supply chains, and infrastructure of the electric power industry from changing surface water conditions resulting from global climate change. The results help inform companies/utilities seeking to incorporate climate change risk in their planning and decision‐making processes by ranking risk severity and likelihood of occurrence on both a regional basis and by risk receptor. The assessment includes identification of potential risks to: (1) thermal generating, (2) hydroelectric, (3) land‐based renewable generating, and (4) transmission and distribution assets. These risks may result from such projected changes as reduced water availability (e.g., for hydroelectric or once‐through cooling), increased water temperatures (e.g., decrease in cooling efficiency, inability to meet discharge permit conditions), increased flood severity (e.g., increased streambank erosion and/or damage to river‐adjacent infrastructure), and decreased water quality (e.g., from increased transport of sediment and dissolved solids). The potential risks identified from this qualitative risk‐assessment are documented in a graphical format depicting both severity and likelihood. This approach allows for comparison of risks across a portfolio and for future prioritization of adaptation strategies. A total of 32 risks were identified in the study, including nine risks to infrastructure, six risks to operations, four risks to supply chain, and 13 environmental/regulatory risks. In this study, a new remote sensing tool was used in conjunction with sampling of river bank sediments to map channel migration patterns and estimate the net contribution of bank erosion to the sediment and phosphorus (P) budget of the Nishnabotna River in southwestern Iowa. Between the years 2009 and 2018, we found that at least 1.81 ± 0.57 × 107 Mg of sediment and 8.26 ± 2.5 × 103 Mg of P entered the Nishnabotna River due to channel migration. This equates to 0.87 Mg of sediment per meter of channel per year and 0.40 kg of P per meter of channel per year. Barring additional deposition elsewhere in the river corridor, these values represent as much as 77% of annual suspended sediment and 46% of the annual P export from the watershed. Our results also indicate that the contribution of net sediment and P volume loss by stream order increases sharply from third to sixth order, even though the total channel length is much smaller in the higher orders. These results suggest that bank erosion is an important source of sediment and P within the watershed and that future attempts to decrease riparian exports of sediment and P should focus on high‐order reaches. Mass‐transport deposits are products of resedimentation phenomena involving a broad spectrum of gravity‐driven processes, and commonly have a high preservation potential in deep‐marine environments. This study documents various types of mass‐transport deposits that are interbedded with intensely bioturbated shallow‐marine calciclastic sediments deposited along a reflective coast during the middle and late Eocene. The sedimentary succession, located in the vicinity of Novigrad in northern Dalmatia, Croatia, comprises sediments deposited in a range of nearshore and carbonate ramp environments, and represents the infill of a thrust‐top (piggyback) basin of the North Dalmatian foreland basin. Five types of mass‐transport deposits, ranging in thickness from 13 cm to 6 m, have been identified: (i) calcilutite and calcarenite slumps; (ii) conglomeratic slump‐debrites with a 'dough‐like' appearance; (iii) blocky‐flow deposits bearing large blocks of beachface and/or shoreface deposits; (iv) rockfall deposits comprising scattered blocks of beachface conglomerates and shoreface calcarenites; and (v) 'classical' matrix‐supported debrites. Calciturbidites are rare and mainly comprise Ta and Tb divisions. Conglomeratic slump‐debrites are mostly found in association with offshore‐transition deposits, suggesting that mass flows were triggered above the storm‐wave base likely due to a combined effect of: (i) strong earthquakes related to the tectonic development of the basin; (ii) sediment destabilization due to pore‐water overpressure during forced regressions; and (iii) storm‐wave loading affecting the shallow seabed. Progressive deepening likely favoured mass‐flow transformations, although the overall paucity of turbidites suggests relatively short mass‐flow transport distance and turbidity current bypass to deeper realms. Multiple erosion phases and resedimentation processes from the Cretaceous to the late Eocene contributed to the diverse suite of extraformational clasts in the mass‐transport deposits studied. The mass‐transport deposits may be triggered and emplaced in shallow‐marine settings mainly during regressive stages of basin development, as the diverse gravel clast composition suggests significant tectonic influence. Although the mass‐transport deposits reported herein are relatively small, some of their peculiar sedimentary features and occurrence within shallow‐marine calciclastic deposits render them rather unique and suitable for a re‐assessment of the nature and evolutionary continuum of processes involved in subaqueous sediment mass transport, as well as the preservation potential of sedimentary features in high‐energy wave‐reworked environments. Hyperpycnal flow deposits, one of the most important deep‐water gravity‐flow deposits in lacustrine basins, have become the research focus in recent years. However, the sedimentary characteristics and depositional model of hyperpycnal flow deposits in lacustrine basins remain unclear due to the differences of depositional settings between lacustrine and marine environments. Hyperpycnal flow deposits observed in the middle of the third member of the Shahejie Formation (Es3z) in the Bonan Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China, provide a rare case study to reveal the characteristics and depositional model in lacustrine basins. For the first time, detailed core analysis, high‐resolution 3D seismic data, petrology and grain size analysis were used to unravel the characteristics and depositional model of hyperpycnal flow deposits in this study. Twelve lithofacies, six bed types and four bedsets (corresponding to feeder channel, distributary channel, levee and lobe) were recognized from detailed facies analysis. Plant fragment, an important identification mark for hyperpycnal flow deposits, can be classified into three types: completely broken plant fragments, partially broken plant fragments and complete leaves. The proximal part of the deposit develops a small amount of scattered and completely broken plant fragments in massive or spaced stratified pebbly sandstone and massive sandstone due to strong erosion of sustained high‐density turbidity current. The medial part of the deposit is dominated by laminated partially broken plant fragments in planar laminated or rippled sandstone due to suspended settling of sustained high‐density turbidity current and quasi‐steady low‐density turbidity current. Layered partially broken plant fragments with some complete leaves are common in the upper part mud rich division of hybrid event bed and laminated siltstone in the distal part of the deposit. The distribution pattern of hyperpycnites is controlled comprehensively by palaeogeomorphy and sediment supply. Palaeogullies determine the provenance direction of hyperpycnal flow. The formation of synsedimentary faults and troughs control the transport routing patterns. Local micro‐palaeogeomorphy and depression areas further restrict the distribution of sand bodies. During the early stage of deposition with insufficient sediment supply, sediments are transported to the deep basin along confined faulted troughs forming elongated sandy bodies. During the late stage of deposition with sufficient sediment supply, sediments are transported to the deep basin without confinement accumulating fan‐shaped sandy bodies. The interaction of sedimentary systems with oceanographic processes in deep‐water environments is not well understood yet, despite its importance for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, and for a full understanding of source‐to‐sink sediment transport. The aim of this study is to improve the understanding of how contourite moats, elongated depressions formed by bottom currents associated with contourite drifts, develop and of the link between moat‐drift system morphology and bottom current dynamics. This study provides a systematic comparison of 185 cross‐sections of moat‐drift systems distributed at 39 different locations worldwide, and a detailed analysis of the morphology of six moats that cover a wide range of typical geological and hydrodynamic settings. Additionally, in situ measured current data were analysed to better link hydrodynamics to moat morphology. The median of all profiles across all moat‐drift systems reveals a 50 m relief, a width of 2.3 km, a relief to width ratio of 0.022, a slope angle of 6°, a drift angle of 3° and a concave‐up shaped morphology. Moats can be over 100 km long. Some moats are driven by sediment erosion while others are depositional and primarily exist due to differential sedimentation inside the moat compared to the drift alongside the moat. A new sub‐classification of moat‐drift systems based on their stratigraphy is proposed. This classification distinguishes moats depending on the degree of erosion versus deposition. No relation is found between latitude and moat‐drift morphology or stratigraphy in the analysed examples. The combined data indicate that a steeper slope focuses the current more than a gentle slope, resulting in an increase of the relief–width ratio and drift angle. Thus, this study provides new insights into the interaction of ocean currents with sedimentary morphology, which thereby affects the evolution of a poorly understood deep‐water sedimentary system. We describe a framework for the simultaneous estimation of model parameters in a partial differential equation using sparse observations. Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling is used in a Bayesian framework to estimate posterior probability distributions for each parameter. We describe the necessary components of this approach and its broad potential for application in models of unsteady processes. The framework is applied to three case studies, of increasing complexity, from the field of cohesive sediment transport. We demonstrate that the framework can be used to recover posterior distributions for all parameters of interest and the results agree well with independent estimates (where available). We also demonstrate how the framework can be used to compare different model parameterizations and provide information on the covariance between model parameters. This framework uses Bayesian inference techniques established in statistical literature to estimate the unobserved parameters of interest used in the model with uncertainty quantification. Infragravity waves are key components of the hydro‐sedimentary processes in coastal areas, especially during extreme storms. Accurate modeling of coastal erosion and breaching requires consideration of the effects of infragravity waves. Here, we present InWave, a new infragravity wave driver of the Coupled Ocean‐Atmopshere‐Waves‐Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system. InWave computes the spatial and temporal variation of wave energy at the wave group scale and the associated incoming bound infragravity wave. Wave group‐varying forces drive free infragravity wave growth and propagation within the hydrodynamic model of the coupled modeling system, which is the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) in this work. Since ROMS is a three‐dimensional model, this coupling allows for the combined formation of undertow currents and infragravity waves. We verified the coupled InWave‐ROMS with one idealized test case, one laboratory experiment, and one field experiment. The coupled modeling system correctly reproduced the propagation of gravity wave energy with acceptable numerical dissipation. It also captured the transfer of energy from the gravity band to the infragravity band, and within the different infragravity bands in the surf zone, the measured three‐dimensional flow structure, and dune morphological evolution satisfactorily. The idealized case demonstrated that the infragravity wave variance depends on the directional resolution and horizontal grid resolution, which are known challenges with the approach taken here. The addition of InWave to COAWST enables novel investigation of nearshore hydro‐sedimentary dynamics driven by infragravity waves using the strengths of the other modeling components, namely the three‐dimensional nature of ROMS and the sediment transport routines. Plain Language Summary: Infragravity waves have periods between 25 and 250 s and are the result of wind‐wave groups, or "sets." When wind‐waves of similar periods travel together, they group, resulting in varying wave heights within the groups. This wave height variation at the group scale forces ocean surface infragravity waves. Coastal circulation, flooding, sand transport, and erosion are strongly influenced by these infragravity waves, especially during extreme storms. Therefore, it is important that we are able to model infragravity waves. We present a novel infragravity wave component of the Coupled‐Ocean‐Atmosphere‐Wave‐Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system: InWave. By coupling InWave and a circulation model, COAWST is now able to account for the main processes needed to predict coastal hazards due to extreme storms. This new coupled system is verified by reproducing observations from idealized numerical cases, a laboratory experiment on dune erosion, and a field experiment. Results show a good agreement with observations. Splash erosion plays a vital role in the loss of eroded materials. Unlike those in slope central areas, laterally ejected splashed materials in slope border areas cannot be replenished easily because slope edges prevent splash erosion particles from entering the slope. Thus, splashed materials in slope border areas are less than those in slope central areas because of the lack of source areas for splash‐eroded materials. However, this phenomenon, called the slope border effect, has received minimal attention by researchers. The partially missing splash erosion induced by the slope border effect on sediment transport was investigated to understand the slope erosion mechanism further in this paper. A modified soil pan divided into four areas, namely, central erosion test area (length = 100 cm, width = 35 cm, depth = 45 cm), border erosion test area (length = 100 cm, width = 35 cm, depth = 45 cm), splash compensate border area (length = 110 cm, width = 30 cm, depth = 45 cm) and splash collection area (length = 100 cm, width = 2.5 cm, depth = 45 cm) was used to monitor diffusion and splash erosion under simulated rainfall. Results showed that the splash detachment rate increased with the increase in slope but initially decreased and then increased with the increase in rainfall intensity. The runoff rate and diffuse erosion rates for complete splash erosion (SE) treatments were higher than those without partial splash erosion (SEL). Under low rainfall erosive power and runoff transport capacity (e.g., 5° slope and 60 mm h−1), the transported clay in SE treatments was approximately 2% more than that in SEL treatments. This amount changed to more than 2% sand under high rainfall and runoff erosive power. However, the mass fraction accounted for by silt particles in the sediments of the SEL treatments was more than that in the SE treatments. Thus, the partially missing splash erosion can weaken the selective transport ability of runoff for sediments. The effect of missing partial splash erosion on diffuse erosion was enhanced with an increase in erosive power. The drawdown of reservoirs behind dams is an important management strategy (e.g., for removal of aging infrastructure, flushing of sediment), and an opportunity to study erosional processes. A numerical model was developed to examine retrogressive bank erosion across reservoir drawdown scenarios and to evaluate factors controlling the rate, volume, and mechanisms of lateral erosion. Modeled processes included dynamic drawdown of groundwater, sequential slope failures via limit equilibrium analysis, and retrogression considering stress interaction between failing blocks. Field measurements were coupled with Staged, Slow, and Rapid drawdown scenarios. Results highlight the importance of including retrogression as an avenue for lateral erosion, as sequential block failures were found to occur in all scenarios except Slow drawdown. This result indicates that bank stability models without some means of characterizing the evolution of slope failure during drawdown are likely underestimating bank failure rates and volumes. In contrast, dynamic groundwater was not found to be a dominant control for any drawdown scenario. Model results also demonstrate that the drawdown increment is a first‐order control on slope instability via the development of drained or undrained conditions. A majority of failures occurred under undrained conditions. To maximize slope stability, using slow drawdown to activate internal friction under drained conditions is essential. The design of the drawdown rate created a tradeoff between the amount of impact created and when the impact is produced. Soil may be a carbon source or sink under the effect of sediment and soil organic carbon (SOC) erosion, transport and deposition. Partial SOC processes to determine whether soil subjected to water erosion is a carbon sink or source have not been clarified but are essential for increasing and predicting SOC storage. In this review, the associations between SOC mineralization, stability and stock at erosion sites, in transported sediments and at deposition sites are clarified. An overview is given for possible determination standards that define soil carbon sinks and sources. Methods for enhancing SOC sequestration and suggestions for improving SOC prediction are also presented. Particle transport is an important intermediate process that determines the material base for SOC stability and sequestration in each erosion and deposition element. When subject to water erosion, a high probability of SOC physical stabilization and a thick soil layer are essential for soil to function as a SOC sink. Sediment transport weakens SOC physical protection in eroded areas but can promote aggregation factors at deposition sites in some cases while increasing the depth of SOC in the soil. In this circumstance, a good soil environment for plant growth facilitates the occurrence of carbon sinks. A concept for critical erosion intensity is proposed to understand SOC sink determination; the concept is presented as the volume of soil erosion per square kilometre (m3 km−2) for which the maximum reduction in vegetation cover or plant biomass still permits plants to provide enough organic matter to compensate for erosion‐induced SOC loss. If erosion intensity is higher than critical erosion intensity at the erosion site, soil degradation is obvious, and soil is presented as an OC source, and vice versa. Finally, the SOC burial method for increasing the soil carbon storage amounts in regions with thick soil layers is presented to explore the SOC sequestration potential in deep soil. The factors considered for SOC prediction should vary with research scale. We hope our review will have direct implications for the modelling of SOC dynamics under water erosion on both slopes and at large scales. The sediment composition of the seabed governs its mobility, hence determining sediment transport and morphological evolution of estuaries and tidal basins. Bed sediments often consist of mixtures of sand and mud, with spatial gradients in the sand/mud content. This study aims at increasing the understanding of processes driving the sediment composition in tidal basins, focusing on depositional processes. We show that bed sediments in the Wadden Sea tend to be either mud‐dominated or sand‐dominated, resulting in a bimodal distribution of the mud content where the two modes represent equilibrium conditions. The equilibria depend primarily on the sediment deposition fluxes, with bimodality originating from the dependence of suspended sand/mud concentrations on the local bed composition. Our analysis shows that bimodality is a phenomenon that is not only specific for the Wadden Sea; it can be expected for a wide range of suspended sediment concentrations and thus also in other systems worldwide. The evolution of the seabed, and thus of our coasts, depends on how these sediment types move. A correct representation of the spatial sand‐mud patterns in the bed is therefore essential if we want to understand and predict coastal evolution. Although segregation of sand and mud has often been attributed to erosion processes, we found that this is mainly the result of depositional processes, and especially of the suspended sediment concentrations. Deep‐water sedimentation on active margins often entails complex sediment transport pathways through slope accommodation. Sedimentation in such settings is commonly differentiated into 'fill and spill' vs. 'tortuous corridor' models. To investigate the utility of these models in convergent settings 15,344 km2 of 3D seismic data is used to investigate sedimentation and erosion patterns across the Hikurangi subduction margin. A series of thrust‐bound trench‐slope basins, each tens of kilometres long by kilometres wide, have been diachronously forming, filling and deforming through the Neogene until today. Five primary input points delivered sediment to the basins along the studied part of the margin. Channels display both axial and transverse orientations, the run‐out lengths of which vary temporally. At various times, relatively coarse‐grained sediment was trapped in the interior basins, occasionally then to be cannibalised during landsliding or erosion of growing structures. At other times, coarse‐grained sediment was bypassed to distal basins or the trench. Multiple sediment input points and occasionally tortuous sediment dispersal corridors result in the evolution of convoluted depositional systems, often with similar styles of sedimentation occurring contemporaneously in proximal and distal basins, contrary to simple models of basin fill. A hierarchy of controls on sediment distribution can be distinguished. At the highest level, sediment distribution is controlled by external factors, for example, glacio‐eustacy and tectonics. At basin scale, the interaction of sedimentary systems with local relief (e.g. evolving seafloor structures and landslides) dictates the location and style of deposition. At the lowest level, autocyclic factors (e.g. flow response to earlier deposits) influence the spatiotemporal variation in erosion and sedimentation. The complex interplay of these factors dictates whether basins were filling, spilling or some combination at any point in time, whilst basins that were filled and spilled may subsequently resume filling due to changes in the bounding conditions. Hence simple use of 'fill and spill' or 'tortuous corridor' models to tectonically active margins is not advised. Furthermore, as sedimentation may influence structure growth, constraining the controls on sediment distribution may improve understanding of the broader evolution of convergent margins and their resource distribution. Glaciers are commonly conceptualized as bodies composed of snow and ice. Yet, many glaciers contain a substantial amount of rock, especially those abutting steep mountains. Mountain slopes erode, depositing rocks on glaciers below. This loose rock (or debris) is buried in glaciers and melts out lower down creating a debris cover. Debris cover reduces ice melt, which changes the shape and movement of glaciers. Glacier movement, specifically basal sliding, efficiently sculpts landscapes. To date, we know little about the impacts of surface debris on conditions below glaciers. To help remedy this, we run numerical model simulations which show that debris‐covered glaciers erode slower than glaciers unaffected by debris. Reduced melt under surface debris lowers sliding speeds and causes sediment to accumulate at the bed, potentially establishing conditions for surging. The influence of surface debris cover on the subglacial environment may hold substantial implications for alpine sediment storage and landscape evolution. Direct measurements of erosional response to past climate change are scarce, but mid‐latitude landscapes can record how shifts between cold and warm periods altered erosion outside glacial margins. To study hillslope responses to periglaciation, we measured bulk geochemistry and cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al concentrations in colluvium and weathered bedrock in an 18 m regolith core from Bear Meadows, Pennsylvania, ∼100 km south of maximum glacial extent. Using core lithology, cosmogenic nuclide concentrations, and regional 10Be‐derived erosion rates, we show the onset of 100‐Kyr glacial cycles at the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition (1.2–0.7 Ma) instigated multiple periglacial episodes in central Appalachia, increasing erosion rates compared to the relatively warmer Neogene. Our results show the higher efficiency of periglacial versus temperate erosion processes and highlight a pervasive Pleistocene periglacial erosion signal preserved in the 10Be inventory of surface sediments in central Appalachia, where erosion rates are slow enough to integrate previous cold‐climate processes. The ratio of 26Al/10Be in the oldest permafrost thaw unit indicates the material was deposited about one million years ago, corresponding to a switch to colder glacial periods followed by more abrupt and extreme warming. The concentrations of 10Be in bedrock below the deposits also imply slower erosion rates prior to the onset of glacial‐interglacial cycles. Our results indicate that cold climate processes are more efficient at eroding rock and transporting sediment than temperate processes and help explain patterns in erosion rates across the mid‐Atlantic region measured over different time scales. Equilibrium sediment transport is the condition of zero net entrainment and deposition by sediment‐transporting flow (i.e. grade or regime). Here criteria for equilibrium sediment transport, or those used as proxies for equilibrium (for example, onset of erosion, onset of particle setting or suppression of turbulence) for dilute, suspended‐load‐dominated, turbidity currents, are tested against laboratory and natural data. The examined criteria are restricted to those describing flow over a bed of loose particulate material involving non‐cohesive sediment. Models include both monodisperse and polydisperse formulations that represent sediment non‐uniformity by using a single characteristic grain size or discretization of the grain‐size distribution, respectively. Analysis shows that a polydisperse‐type flux‐balance model, that equates erosional and depositional fluxes and where erosion is related to the power used to lift sediment mass from the bed (the 'Flow‐Power Flux‐Balance' model) provides predictions most consistent with observational data. Other equilibrium models tested, monodisperse or polydisperse, fail to predict realistic bed slopes and/or flow durations for concentrations, velocities and depths within limits for natural flows. Results of the Flow‐Power Flux‐Balance model are used to quantify sediment transport fields, equilibrium Shields numbers and slopes for turbidity currents of variable flow and particle properties. Sediment management is currently limited by uncertainties in the applicability of existing radionuclide tracers and the effects of urbanization. Here, we use plutonium isotopes (239+240Pu) from weapons‐testing fallout to trace sediment transport across five watersheds in an urbanizing landscape in Kansas, USA. Historic flooding in the region provided an opportunity to assess extreme connectivity of sediment sources. 239+240Pu activity of transported sediment decreased as catchments urbanized, indicating a greater contribution from subsurface bank sediment; Bayesian modeling predicted 50% (8%–80%) bank sourcing in the most rural watershed, which rose to 93% (73%–100%) in the most urban catchment. 239+240Pu activity provides explanatory information on the superposition of sediment sources, which is beyond that given by traditional organic and geochemical tracers that primarily infer vegetative and geologic sourcing, respectively. Our study demonstrates the utility of 239+240Pu as a sediment tracer for managing erosion under anthropogenic change. Assessing rivers' and hillslopes' sensitivity to external forcing is paramount to understand landscape evolution, in particular as a response to Quaternary climate changes. River networks are usually considered to be the main conveyors of environmental signals, such as changes in precipitation, temperature, or baselevel. Yet because hillslopes provide the source of sediment for river networks, their response to environmental change also modulates landscape dynamics. In order to characterize such behavior, we analyze the response times of a transport‐limited hillslope. We use simple numerical models of denudation to study hillslope responses to oscillatory forcing and understand their filtering effects on environmental signals. Modifications in the frequency of climate oscillation, such as the change that occurred at the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition, can significantly modulate hillslope sediment‐flux response. We infer a wide range of hillslope responses, ranging from negligible change over the full range of climate‐forcing frequencies, to a significant filtering of long‐period signals. Wildfire risk has increased in recent decades over many regions, due to warming climate and other factors. Increased sediment export from recently burned landscapes can jeopardize downstream infrastructure and water resources, but physical landscape response to fire has not been quantified for some at‐risk areas, including much of northern California, USA. We measured sediment yield from three watersheds (13–29 km2) that drain to Whiskeytown Lake, California, within the area burned by the 2018 Carr Fire. Structure‐from‐Motion photogrammetry on aerial images combined with sonar bathymetric mapping of submerged areas indicated first‐year post‐fire sediment yields of 4,080 ± 598 t/km2 (Brandy Creek), 2,700 ± 527 t/km2 (Boulder Creek), and 305 ± 58.0 t/km2 (Whiskey Creek)—some of the first post‐fire yields measured in northern California and 64, 42, and 4.8 times greater than pre‐fire yields, respectively. These were measured during a wet year and resulted largely from rilling erosion and fluvial sediment transport, without post‐fire debris flows. Rilling preferentially developed in contact with dirt roads, aided by thin soils and exposed bedrock, and on slopes vegetated by chaparral pre‐fire. The second post‐fire year (a dry year) was characterized by fluvial reworking and delta progradation of the first‐year deposits and relatively little new sediment export. First‐year sedimentation of 111,000 m3 represented minor loss of storage capacity in Whiskeytown Lake but would be detrimental to smaller reservoirs; in general, increased sediment yields from western US watersheds as fire and extreme rainfall increase will likely pose risks to water quality and storage. Detachment rate in rill erosion is an important indicator of soil erosion speed and serves as the basis for estimation of soil erosion using the process‐oriented model. Rill detachment rates on saturated soil slopes were numerically calculated from the dataset of the rill erosion process. The datasets of sediment concentrations were obtained from laboratory experiments, along saturated soil rills 1, 2, 4 and 8 m under slope gradients of 5°, 10°, 15° and 20° and flow rates of 2, 4 and 8 L min−1, and were used to compute rill detachment rates through a numerical algorithm. The resulting rill detachment rates on saturated soil slopes ranged from 0.006 to 0.994 kg m−2 s−1. Exponential functions fitted well the rill detachment rates with rill lengths, whereas linear functions fitted well those with sediment concentrations. The rill detachment rate patterns of saturated soil slopes exhibited similar rill erosion–sediment concepts to those of non‐saturated soil slopes. However, saturated soil slopes were detached considerably faster than the non‐saturated soil slopes. Detachment rates of saturated soil rills were initially and considerably more rapid and decreased faster with rill length than those of non‐saturated soil rills. The saturated soil rills detached 1.627 to 2.246 times the sediments of the non‐saturated soil rills. This phenomenon indicates that faster rill detachments in saturated soil rills make sediment loads in water approach the sediment transport capacities faster than those in non‐saturated soil rills. The computed detachment rates and the functional relationships in this work can provide a basis for determining rill erosion model parameters on saturated soil slopes. Formation of alluvial stratigraphy is controlled by autogenic processes that mix their imprints with allogenic forcing. In some alluvial successions, sedimentary cycles have been linked to astronomically‐driven, cyclic climate changes. However, it remains challenging to define how such cyclic allogenic forcing leads to sedimentary cycles when it continuously occurs in concert with autogenic forcing. Accordingly, we evaluate the impact of cyclic and non‐cyclic upstream forcing on alluvial stratigraphy through a process‐based alluvial architecture model, the Karssenberg and Bridge (2008) model (KB08). The KB08 model depicts diffusion‐based sediment transport, erosion and deposition within a network of channel belts and associated floodplains, with river avulsion dependent on lateral floodplain gradient, flood magnitude and frequency, and stochastic components. We find cyclic alluvial stratigraphic patterns to occur when there is cyclicity in the ratio of sediment supply over water discharge (Qs/Qw ratio), in the precondition that the allogenic forcing has sufficiently large amplitudes and long, but not very long, wavelengths, depending on inherent properties of the modelled basin (e.g. basin subsidence, size, and slope). Each alluvial stratigraphic cycle consists of two phases: an aggradation phase characterized by rapid sedimentation due to frequent channel shifting and a non‐deposition phase characterized by channel belt stability and, depending on Qs/Qw amplitudes, incision. Larger Qs/Qw ratio amplitudes contribute to weaker downstream signal shredding by stochastic components in the model. Floodplain topographic differences are found to be compensated by autogenic dynamics at certain compensational timescales in fully autogenic runs, while the presence of allogenic forcing clearly impacts the compensational stacking patterns. A bstract: The geochemical character of detrital mineral grains carries information that can be used to track sediment generation and transport within the broader context of basin development and crustal evolution. Many provenance studies focus on single minerals, which, as a consequence of different source fertility, survivorship and sediment sample representativeness, generate bias and consequently potentially skew geological interpretations. While a range of approaches has been proposed to either quantify or mitigate some of these biases, a significant limitation associated with the most commonly employed provenance proxy – zircon – remains that the grains are remarkably robust and capable of surviving numerous cycles of erosion, deposition and uplift. Here, same‐sample integration of zircon and feldspar provenance information is used to propose a sediment recycling metric 'R'. This metric quantifies the degree of relative recycling of distinctive source components through comparison of provenance proxies with similar source region fertilities but different survivorship potential. This approach is applied to a case study of several thousand new zircon U‐Pb ages and K‐feldspar Pb‐isotope ratios from 25 Carboniferous to Palaeogene clastic samples from the poorly studied Wollaston Forland–Clavering Ø region in hydrocarbon prospective north‐east Greenland. Concordant detrital zircon populations are dominated by Palaeoproterozoic (ca 1.9 to 1.8 Ga) grains (>60%), with more minor Palaeozoic, Neo‐Mesoproterozoic and Archean subpopulations. Feldspar grain Pb‐isotope ratios almost entirely (>>60%) correspond to Caledonian granites (ca 0.4 Ga). Zircon and feldspar provenance proxies appear decoupled as a consequence of: (i) limited resolvable growth of zircon within Caledonian granites, and more importantly; (ii) significant upgrading of recycled zircon components via rift flanking sedimentary basins. Collectively, the integration of detrital mineral proxies with disparate survivorship potentials through sediment cycles (labile first cycle feldspar versus potentially polycyclic zircon) is essential to facilitate more nuanced definition of sediment source regions, routing pathways and basin evolution. The drastic decline in sediment discharge experienced by large rivers in recent years might trigger erosion thus increasing the vulnerability of their extensive deltas. However, scarce information is available on the erosion patterns in mega‐deltas and associated physical drivers. Here a series of bathymetries in the South Passage, Changjiang Delta, were analyzed to identify morphodynamic variations during high riverine flow and tropical cyclones (TCs). Results indicate that high river flow during flood season triggers large‐scale net erosion along the inner estuary, generating elongated erosion‐deposition patches. Erosion magnitude gradually weakens moving seaward with few localized bottom variations in the offshore area. TCs transport sediment landward and are accompanied by an overall weak erosion, with a less organized spatial pattern of erosion‐deposition. TCs can therefore significantly alleviate erosion, reducing the sediment loss induced by riverine flows by over 50%. These results highlight the role of TCs on the sediment dynamics of mega‐deltas. Submarine slope channel systems have complicated three‐dimensional geometries and facies distributions, which are challenging to resolve using subsurface data. Outcrop analogues can provide sub‐seismic‐scale detail, although most exhumed systems only afford two‐dimensional constraints on the depositional architecture. A rare example of an accessible fine‐grained slope channel complex set situated in a tectonically quiescent basin that offers seismic‐scale, down‐dip and across‐strike exposures is the Klein Hangklip area, Tanqua‐Karoo Basin, South Africa. This study investigates the three‐dimensional architecture of this channel complex set to characterise the stratigraphic evolution of a submarine channel‐fill and the implications this has for both sediment transport to the deep‐oceans and reservoir quality distribution. Correlated sedimentary logs and mapping of key surfaces across a 3 km2 area reveal that: (i) the oldest channel elements in channel complexes infill relatively deep channel cuts and have low aspect‐ratios. Later channel elements are bound by comparatively flat erosion surfaces and have high aspect‐ratios; (ii) facies changes across depositional strike are consistent and predictable; conversely, facies change in successive down depositional dip positions indicating longitudinal variability in depositional processes; (iii) stratigraphic architecture is consistent and predictable at seismic‐scale both down‐dip and across‐strike in three‐dimensions; (iv) channel‐base‐deposits exhibit spatial heterogeneity on one to hundreds of metres length‐scales, which can inhibit accurate recognition and interpretations drawn from one‐dimensional or limited two‐dimensional datasets; and (v) channel‐base‐deposit character is linked to sediment bypass magnitude and longevity, which suggests that time‐partitioning is biased towards conduit excavation and maintenance rather than the fill‐phase. The data provide insights into the stratigraphic evolution and architecture of slope channel‐fills on fine‐grained continental margins and can be utilised to improve predictions derived from lower resolution and one‐dimensional well data. Dam‐related downstream adjustments of riverbeds are normally investigated by analysing the trend in sediment supply and high flow events during the pre‐ and post‐dam periods. The required data for existing predictive models is not measured at river gauges, which limits the application of these tools. We derived the frequency of sediment‐transporting streamflow events (T*) and upstream sediment supply (S*) in the pre‐ and post‐dam periods with widely available gauged records and predicted changes in the downstream riverbed by adapting an existing model. Ten gauging stations in the Godavari River Basin, India, located downstream of dams, were chosen as study sites. Annually surveyed cross‐sections at each site validated the accuracy of the predicted dam‐related downstream changes. Then, a regression equation (R2 = 0.75) was established between T*/S* (independent variable) and changes in the downstream bed elevation (dependent variable) for the Godavari Basin. We recommended that similar local empirical equations be formulated for larger river basins. Models of large‐scale rainfall‐runoff and sediment transport processes that can account for the influence of dams, such as the Soil & Water Assessment Tool, can be paired with the proposed regression equation to estimate dam‐related downstream erosion and deposition with globally available data. A total maximum daily load for the Chesapeake Bay requires reduction in pollutant load from sources within the Bay watersheds. The Conestoga River watershed has been identified as a major source of sediment load to the Bay. Upland loads of sediment from agriculture are a concern; however, a large proportion of the sediment load in the Conestoga River has been linked to scour of legacy sediment associated with historic millpond sites. Clarifying this distinction and identifying specific segments associated with upland vs. channel sources has important implications for future management. In order to address this important question, we combined the strengths of two widely accepted watershed management models — Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for upland agricultural processes, and Hydrologic Simulation Program FORTRAN (HSPF) for instream fate and transport — to create a novel linked modeling system to predict sediment loading from critical sources in the watershed including upland and channel sources, and to aid in targeted implementation of management practices. The model indicates approximately 66% of the total sediment load is derived from instream sources, in agreement with other studies in the region and can be used to support identification of these channel source segments vs. upland source segments, further improving targeted management. The innovated linked SWAT‐HSPF model implemented in this study is useful for other watersheds where both upland agriculture and instream processes are important sources of sediment load. Abstract: Geomorphic change from extreme events in large managed rivers has implications for river management. A steady‐state, quasi‐three‐dimensional hydrodynamic model was applied to a 29‐km reach of the Missouri River using 2011 flood data. Model results for an extreme flow (500‐year recurrence interval [RI]) and an elevated managed flow (75‐year RI) were used to assess sediment mobility through examination of the spatial distribution of boundary or bed shear stress (τb) and longitudinal patterns of average τb, velocity, and kurtosis of τb. Kurtosis of τb was used as an indicator of planform channel complexity and can be applied to other river systems. From differences in longitudinal patterns of sediment mobility for the two flows we can infer: (1) under extreme flow, the channel behaves as a single‐thread channel controlled primarily by flow, which enhances the meander pattern; (2) under elevated managed flows, the channel behaves as multithread channel controlled by the interaction of flow with bed and channel topography, resulting in a more complex channel; and (3) for both flows, the model reach lacks a consistent pattern of deposition or erosion, which indicates migration of areas of erosion and deposition within the reach. Despite caveats and limitations, the analysis provides useful information about geomorphic change under extreme flow and potential implications for river management. Abstract: Evolving mountain belts dynamics is very sensitive to surface processes. The surface processes affect tectonics by enhancing crust exhumation and thermal weakening, and depositing soft yet cold sediments in surrounding basins. While 2D plane strain models approximate cylindrical tectonic structures well, simple 1D mass transfer cannot capture erosion–sedimentation complexity. The Eastern Kyrgyz Tien Shan, where structures, basins and exhumation rates are well constrained, is used here to illustrate this issue. Thermo‐mechanical models demonstrate that 1D transport cannot adjust both basin geometry and Apatite Fission Track exhumation ages. When out‐of‐plane sediment transfer is considered, the amount of evacuated sediment delays or accelerates the formation of new faults, affecting the relative timing of exhumation. For our case study, lateral drainage must evacuate 80% of the sediments to match the geological constraints, which is consistent with other source to sink analyses. Monitoring of geomorphic changes affecting sea cliffs poses a difficult challenge from a logistical point of view. Nevertheless, this activity is fundamental for the evaluation of cliff recession rates and the assessment of risk conditions affecting coastal settlements. Innovative geomatics techniques provide a valid contribution to detect cliff topographic modifications induced by erosion or landslide processes. This study presents a photogrammetric approach based on structure from motion (SfM) aimed at monitoring the geomorphic evolution of a coastal landslide that displaced about 40 000 m3 of material in southern Italy. The landslide was monitored for more than two years, comparing multitemporal 3D point clouds derived from SfM. The results of change detection analysis allowed quantifying the volumes of rocks and unconsolidated sediments mobilised by erosion processes after the main failure, and developing a sediment budget. The Song Gianh is a small-sized (~3500 km2), monsoon-dominated river in northern central Vietnam that can be used to understand how topography and climate control continental erosion. We present major element concentrations, together with Sr and Nd isotopic compositions, of siliciclastic bulk sediments to define sediment provenance and chemical weathering intensity. These data indicate preferential sediment generation in the steep, wetter upper reaches of the Song Gianh. In contrast, detrital zircon U-Pb ages argue for significant flux from the drier, northern Rao Tro tributary. We propose that this mismatch represents disequilibrium in basin erosion patterns driven by changing monsoon strength and the onset of agriculture across the region. Detrital apatite fission track and 10Be data from modern sediment support slowing of regional bedrock exhumation rates through the Cenozoic. If the Song Gianh is representative of coastal Vietnam then the coastal mountains may have produced around 132 000-158 000 km3 of the sediment now preserved in the Song Hong-Yinggehai Basin (17-21% of the total), the primary depocenter of the Red River. This flux does not negate the need for drainage capture in the Red River to explain the large Cenozoic sediment volumes in that basin but does partly account for the discrepancy between preserved and eroded sediment volumes. OSL ages from terraces cluster in the Early Holocene (7.4-8.5 ka), Pre-Industrial (550-320 year BP) and in the recent past ( ca. 150 year BP). The older terraces reflect high sediment production driven by a strong monsoon, whereas the younger are the product of anthropogenic impact on the landscape caused by farming. There is now strong evidence that stratal geometries on basin margins are most likely a consequence of multiple controls, not just variations in accommodation. Consequently, correct sequence stratigraphic interpretation of stratal geometries requires an understanding of how multiple different controls may generate similar geometries. Using a simple numerical stratigraphic forward model, we explore the impact of time variable sediment supply and different sediment transport rates on stratal geometries. We demonstrate how four common types of stratal geometry can form by more than one set of controlling parameter values and are thus likely to be non-unique, meaning that there may be several sets of controlling factors that can plausibly explain their formation. For example, a maximum transgressive surface can occur in the model due to an increase in rate of relative sea-level rise during constant sediment supply, and due to a reduction in rate of sediment supply during a constant rate of relative sea-level rise. Sequence boundaries, topset aggradation and shoreline trajectories are also examples of non-unique stratal geometries. If the model simulations in this work are sufficiently realistic, then the modelled stratal geometries are important examples of non-uniqueness, suggesting the need for a shift towards sequence stratigraphic methods based on constructing and evaluating multiple hypotheses and scenarios. The article presents a meta-analysis examining the effects that abundance, organism size and behavior, and hydraulic energy shape biotic effects on erosion and sediment transport in streams. It states that incipient sediment motion, suspension, and deposition can be altered by species that both increase and decrease erosion. It examines the impact of aquatic insects, fish, and crustaceans and recommends future studies examine understudied organisms like biofilms.

Recent developments in complex systems analysis have led to new techniques for detecting causal relationships using relatively short time series, on the order of 30 sequential observations. Although many ecological observation series are even shorter, perhaps fewer than ten sequential observations, these shorter time series are often highly replicated in space (i.e., plot replication). Here, we combine the existing techniques of convergent cross mapping (CCM) and dewdrop regression to build a novel test of causal relations that leverages spatial replication, which we call multispatial CCM. Using examples from simulated and real-world ecological data, we test the ability of multispatial CCM to detect causal relationships between processes. We find that multispatial CCM successfully detects causal relationships with as few as five sequential observations, even in the presence of process noise and observation error. Our results suggest that this technique may constitute a useful test for causality in systems where experiments are difficult to perform and long time series are not available. To achieve a more robust interpretation of sediment conditions and transport based on grain size, this study combines the perspectives of two different interpretation techniques that have been developed separately and applied in the literature: (i) 'grain size trend analysis' interprets changes between interrelated sampling sites assuming that sediment in the direction of transport should become either coarser, better sorted and more positively skewed, or finer, better sorted and more negatively skewed; and (ii) the 'population anomalies' method, which estimates the balance between erosion and accumulation processes at each sampling site based on individual site deviations compared with average values for grain-size parameters in the area of interest. The simultaneous use of both approaches enables sedimentological conditions and transport alternatives to be distinguished. This improvement is necessary because site-specific changes and general textural trends provide information that complements the strengths and weaknesses of each perspective. The methods are implemented here using two-dimensional Geographic Information System tools and illustrated for the Lithuanian coast. Grain-size characteristics of 712 surface samples of sandy sediments are used to interpret sediment transport pathways and predominant sedimentological conditions in the Lithuanian coastal zone. In general, coast-parallel sediment transport dominates the entire investigation area, although wave-induced movement perpendicular to the coastline is inferred in the shallow nearshore zone. Complex relationships between stream functions and processes make evaluation of stream modification projects difficult. Informed by vague objectives and minimal monitoring data, post-construction project evaluations can often be a subjective attribution of success or failure. This article provides a simple framework to rapidly describe the degree of damage in stream modification projects performed in constrained settings. Based on widely accepted evaluations of physical habitat quality and stream stability, the damage states framework describes a continuum of damage in multiple categories that relate natural stream functions to the often desired state of static equilibrium. Given that channel form is closely related to stream function, it follows that changes to the channel form result in changes in function. The damage states focus on damage to flow hydraulics, sediment transport and channel equilibrium, hydraulic, and geomorphic parameters that describe basic stream functioning and support higher level functions in the modified channel. The present study analyzes the impact of regularly arranged sediment bed on the particle clustering by introducing an artificial non-uniformity in the particle packing. Two simulations only differing in their sediment bed configuration are reported with the non-uniform roughness created through a random vertical displacement of the fixed particles constituting the rough wall. It is found that the irregular roughness enhances particle clustering as well as bed-load transport compared to the case of uniform roughness. Submarine flows carve canyons into continental shelves, yet the conditions and events responsible for canyon incision are incompletely understood. Coarse sediment flux has been shown to promote terrestrial bedrock incision via abrasion in rivers, but similar processes in submarine canyons have yet to be systematically documented. We use repeat bathymetry, provenance analysis, wave modeling, and channel network analysis to show that longshore sheltering and wave focusing by the Delgada submarine canyon induce sediment accumulation and elevated wave shear stresses in its headwall region that frequently mobilize coarse bed material. These mobilizations scour bedrock in the headwall and generate abrasive turbidity currents that work to carve the canyon's active channel into bedrock. These findings highlight an important positive feedback between submarine canyons, waves, and sediment supply and suggest that submarine canyons adjacent to wave‐dominated, coarse sediment‐rich coastlines seek the shoreline through headward incision. Previous studies have shown that sediment transport models based on bed shear stress (τ) are not accurate for regions with vegetation. The present study demonstrated that the inaccuracy arises from the influence of vegetation‐generated turbulence. Bed‐load transport rate, Qs, and near‐bed velocity were measured in a sediment‐recirculating flume with model vegetation of different vegetation volume fractions (ϕ) and with bare sand beds. At the same τ, the measured Qs increased with increasing ϕ, suggesting that vegetation‐generated turbulence, which also increased with increasing ϕ, was augmenting the bed‐load transport. At the same near‐bed turbulent kinetic energy, kt, the Qs measured in both bare and vegetated channels agreed within uncertainty, suggesting that kt may be a more universal predictor of bed‐load transport than bed shear stress. A τ‐based bed‐load transport model was reinterpreted as a kt‐based model. The new kt‐based model predicted the Qs measurements for both bare and vegetated channels. These ecosystems provide habitat important to fisheries, enhance water quality by filtering nutrients from runoff, and also protect coastal regions from storm surge and waves. To mitigate the loss of these habitats, restoration projects import sediment to eroded areas. The success of the restoration depends on its ability to retain sediment, so that restoration design requires a good understanding of sediment transport within vegetated landscapes. However, this understanding is currently lacking, and many restoration projects fail due to unanticipated sediment loss from the restored regions. The goal of our study was to develop a predictive model for sediment transport in regions with vegetation. Using laboratory experiments with a model vegetation, we first showed that existing sediment transport models, based on studies without vegetation, underestimate by orders of magnitude the sediment transport in vegetated regions. Second, we demonstrated that the enhanced sediment transport was caused by vegetation‐generated turbulence. Finally, we proposed and verified a new model for sediment transport that incorporates the role of vegetation‐generated turbulence, which we believe will be an important guide for future coastal and riverine restoration projects.
