The European Union has been allocating funds for the energy transition to meet escalating global energy demands while minimising the environmental impact. This paper focuses on the impact of post-pandemic policies on photovoltaic technology in Italy and Portugal, specifically analysing self-consumption schemes and energy communities. A techno-economic assessment identified optimal PV systems for four families in each country, considering financial incentives. Italy offers Superbonus 110 and Ecobonus schemes, while Portugal provides access to the Environmental Fund. Profitable PV systems with storage are feasible in Italy but not in Portugal. Superbonus 110 favours smaller systems, Ecobonus supports larger ones, and Portuguese policies prioritise smaller systems. Simulations of energy communities for the same families showed that in Italy, the best configurations consist of families acting as producers with larger PV capacities and smaller batteries. In contrast, in Portugal, the policies favour smaller PV systems without batteries, resulting in optimal configurations where families are solely consumers. This research underscores diverse national approaches to post-pandemic energy policies and their nuanced impacts on PV technology in Italy and Portugal. It can be concluded that energy communities offer greater profitability than individual self-consumption schemes. This is because individual households continue to prioritise self-consumption and personal savings while selling their excess energy at a more favourable price than what they would receive from the grid. • In Italy, there are financial incentives and in Portugal, electricity cost reductions. • The models used the Net Present Value and the Internal Rate of Return as indicators. • In Italy, Superbonus 100 favours smaller systems, while Ecobonus supports larger ones. • Smaller systems without batteries for self-consumption are more profitable in Portugal. • Energy communities are more economically viable in both countries. The paper investigates the energy performances of several configurations of solar-assisted heat pumps equipped with photovoltaic (PV) and photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) panels as well as solar thermal collectors for domestic hot water production. The systems are sized to serve small aggregates of users assumed as micro energy communities in low housing density context in the South of Italy. Electricity storages are also considered to smooth the interaction with the electric grid. Several indices are defined and calculated to guide toward a correct sizing, to check users' satisfaction and to assess primary energy savings. The results show how the energy consumption from the analysed systems is mainly influenced by the amount and structure of domestic hot water demand per day. Also, according to the chosen plant layouts, it is shown that thermal contribution of PVT slightly influences the system performances. Better results in terms of less non-renewable primary energy consumption are recorded for the PV-based plant. Solar thermal collectors, even if sized for high solar fractions, do not properly support the daily heat pump operation, especially in winter, and present a certain electricity consumption for auxiliaries which results to be penalizing. Additional calculations were performed for the case of energy communities in a context with higher uses of non-renewable energy for electricity generation. Thermochromic (TC) glazing could provide a significant reduction of energy consumption in curtain wall buildings. However, each application requires a design tailored to building's specifications. This paper proposes a complete approach for designing TC glaze based on building energy simulation starting from the production of thin thermochromic layers and the measurements of their optical properties by means of a customized spectrophotometer. The main focus of this work is to identify the optimal TC optical response that minimises the building energy consumption. Energy simulations have been performed for a virtual mock-up set at two locations with different climates, Italy and Poland. A set of profiles, each one determining thermochromic properties in terms of switching temperature, range of solar transmittance and transition speed, have been created with a fine step of temperature (2 °C) and used to simulate different scenarios. The outcome of the optimization provided the optimal properties to achieve the right balance between cooling energy reduction and heating energy increase due to the application of the thermochromic layer, in comparison to a standard clear glass. The fine step in switching temperature allowed to accurately estimate the subtle differences for the two different climates (25 °C Italy, 24–26 °C Poland). The highest impact has been found for the Italian location with a maximum reduction of total energy consumption of 22.8%. This was achieved with a thermochromic switching at 25 °C, with fast transition and range of transmittance between 0.1 (switched state) and 0.5 (normal state), which is a not extreme behaviour. Assessing the long-term reliability of PV systems is important for understanding their energy and cost efficiency. Typically, estimates and predictions are based on indoor tests and accelerated ageing. However, fluctuating and differently interacting outdoor factors such as solar radiation, dust, and shadowing in real environment can impact the actual performance. This paper examines alterations related to ageing of c-Si PV modules, firstly by classifying the main factors that affect aged c-Si PV modules and then assessing the impact on their performance degradation by analysing a pilot BIPV system at Politecnico di Milano after 20 years of actual operation. Such system, which is highly representative since is the first public BIPV plant funded in Italy, was carefully and continuously monitored during its operating life. In particular, according to the visual/IR inspection carried out after the 20th year of operation, the main observed alteration in the modules were discoloration of the encapsulant, delamination, and chalking of the backsheet. The I-V characterization shown that all sampled modules had an overall degradation rate of less than 20 %, which is within the warranty limit, although in many cases the degradation rate over time shows a non-linear trend. Only one module experienced a severe fault that caused the complete loss of functionality. Obtained results confirm the reliability of c-Si technology, stressing the importance of a careful monitoring especially after the 15th year, when an increase of the degradation rate might occur. • Thermal energy demand evaluation for typical school buildings. • Design and optimisation of a solar assisted seasonal borehole thermal energy system. • Several dynamic energy simulations located southern Italy were considered. • The payback time of the proposed plant was investigated. Solar heating and cooling systems are reliable and feasible solutions among renewable energy technologies. Indeed, solar thermal devices help reduce primary energy consumption and can reduce electricity demand, thus representing one of the best options for satisfying heating and/or cooling energy supply. The Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) represents one of the best promising option among the various storage technologies, because the size of the storage can be easily extended by drilling additional boreholes and simply connecting the pipes to the existing boreholes; the overall energy efficiency of this system is about 40–60%. In this paper, the authors present an application of this technology for the heating system of a school building located in the Southern part of Italy. Two different energy schemes are presented: a school equipped with a conventional gas boiler system with radiators and the same school building with a low temperature heat pump system with fan-coils. All simulations were performed in dynamic state by using TRNSYS software. The results of the analysis assessing the energy and economic performances of the two systems highlighting the advantages of the BTES application in the context of Italian market.
