De-mining operations are of critical importance for humanitarian efforts and safety in conflict-affected regions. In this paper, we address the challenge of enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of mine detection systems. We present an innovative Deep Learning architecture tailored for pulse induction-based Metallic Mine Detectors (MMD), so called DL-MMD. Our methodology leverages deep neural networks to distinguish amongst nine distinct materials with an exceptional validation accuracy of 93.5%. This high level of precision enables us not only to differentiate between anti-personnel mines, without metal plates but also to detect minuscule 0.2-g vertical paper pins in both mineralized soil and non-mineralized environments. Moreover, through comparative analysis, we demonstrate a substantial 3% and 7% improvement (approx.) in accuracy performance compared to the traditional K-Nearest Neighbors and Support Vector Machine classifiers, respectively. Advances in sensor, computing, and communication technologies are enabling big data analytics by providing time series data. However, conventional models struggle to identify sequence features and forecast accuracy. This paper investigates time series features and shows that some machine learning algorithms can outperform deep learning models. In particular, the problem analyzed concerned predicting the number of vehicles passing through an Italian tollbooth in 2021. The dataset, composed of 8766 rows and 6 columns relating to additional tollbooths, proved to have high stationarity and was treated through machine learning methods such as support vector machine, random forest, and eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), as well as deep learning through recurrent neural networks with long short-term memory (RNN-LSTM) cells. From the comparison of these models, the prediction through the XGBoost algorithm outperforms competing algorithms, particularly in terms of MAE and MSE. The result highlights how a shallower algorithm than a neural network is, in this case, able to obtain a better adaptation to the time series instead of a much deeper model that tends to develop a smoother prediction. Technology offers a lot of potential that is being used to improve the integrity and efficiency of infrastructures. Crack is one of the major concerns that can affect the integrity or usability of any structure. Oftentimes, the use of manual inspection methods leads to delays which can worsen the situation. Automated crack detection has become very necessary for efficient management and inspection of critical infrastructures. Previous research in crack detection employed classification and localization-based models using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs). This study suggests and compares the effectiveness of transfer learned DCNNs for crack detection as a classification model and as a feature extractor to overcome this restriction. The main objective of this paper is to present various methods of crack detection on surfaces and compare their performance over 3 different datasets. Experiments conducted in this work are threefold: initially, the effectiveness of 12 transfer learned DCNN models for crack detection is analyzed on three publicly available datasets: SDNET, CCIC and BSD. With an accuracy of 53.40%, ResNet101 outperformed other models on the SDNET dataset. EfficientNetB0 was the most accurate (98.8%) model on the BSD dataset, and ResNet50 performed better with an accuracy of 99.8% on the CCIC dataset. Secondly, two image enhancement methods are employed to enhance the images and are transferred learned on the 12 DCNNs in pursuance of improving the performance of the SDNET dataset. The results from the experiments show that the enhanced images improved the accuracy of transfer-learned crack detection models significantly. Furthermore, deep features extracted from the last fully connected layer of the DCNNs are used to train the Support Vector Machine (SVM). The integration of deep features with SVM enhanced the detection accuracy across all the DCNN-dataset combinations, according to analysis in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The triage process in emergency departments (EDs) relies on the subjective assessment of medical practitioners, making it unreliable in certain aspects. There is a need for a more accurate and objective algorithm to determine the urgency of patients. This paper explores the application of advanced data-synthesis algorithms, machine learning (ML) algorithms, and ensemble models to predict patient mortality. Patients predicted to be at risk of mortality are in a highly critical condition, signifying an urgent need for immediate medical intervention. This paper aims to determine the most effective method for predicting mortality by enhancing the F1 score while maintaining high area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) score. This study used a dataset of 7325 patients who visited the Yonsei Severance Hospital's ED, located in Seoul, South Korea. The patients were divided into two groups: patients who deceased in the ED and patients who didn't. Various data-synthesis techniques, such as SMOTE, ADASYN, CTGAN, TVAE, CopulaGAN, and Gaussian Copula, were deployed to generate synthetic patient data. Twenty two ML models were then utilized, including tree-based algorithms like Decision tree, AdaBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, XGBoost, NGBoost, TabNet, which are deep neural network algorithms, and statistical algorithms such as Support Vector Machine, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, k-nearest neighbors, and Gaussian Naive Bayes, as well as Ensemble Models which use the results from the ML models. Based on 21 patient information features used in the pandemic influenza triage algorithm (PITA), the models explained previously were applied to aim for the prediction of patient mortality. In evaluating ML algorithms using an imbalanced medical dataset, conventional metrics like accuracy scores or AUC can be misleading. This paper emphasizes the importance of using the F1 score as the primary performance measure, focusing on recall and specificity in detecting patient mortality. The highest-ranked model for predicting mortality utilized the Gaussian Copula data-synthesis technique and the CatBoost classifier, achieving an AUC of 0.9731 and an F1 score of 0.7059. Due to the wide availability of easy-to-access content on social media, along with the advanced tools and inexpensive computing infrastructure, has made it very easy for people to produce deep fakes that can cause to spread disinformation and hoaxes. This rapid advancement can cause panic and chaos as anyone can easily create propaganda using these technologies. Hence, a robust system to differentiate between real and fake content has become crucial in this age of social media. This paper proposes an automated method to classify deep fake images by employing Deep Learning and Machine Learning based methodologies. Traditional Machine Learning (ML) based systems employing handcrafted feature extraction fail to capture more complex patterns that are poorly understood or easily represented using simple features. These systems cannot generalize well to unseen data. Moreover, these systems are sensitive to noise or variations in the data, which can reduce their performance. Hence, these problems can limit their usefulness in real-world applications where the data constantly evolves. The proposed framework initially performs an Error Level Analysis of the image to determine if the image has been modified. This image is then supplied to Convolutional Neural Networks for deep feature extraction. The resultant feature vectors are then classified via Support Vector Machines and K-Nearest Neighbors by performing hyper-parameter optimization. The proposed method achieved the highest accuracy of 89.5% via Residual Network and K-Nearest Neighbor. The results prove the efficiency and robustness of the proposed technique; hence, it can be used to detect deep fake images and reduce the potential threat of slander and propaganda. Voice disorders are very common in the global population. Many researchers have conducted research on the identification and classification of voice disorders based on machine learning. As a data-driven algorithm, machine learning requires a large number of samples for training. However, due to the sensitivity and particularity of medical data, it is difficult to obtain sufficient samples for model learning. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a pretrained OpenL3-SVM transfer learning framework for the automatic recognition of multi-class voice disorders. The framework combines a pre-trained convolutional neural network, OpenL3, and a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The Mel spectrum of the given voice signal is first extracted and then input into the OpenL3 network to obtain high-level feature embedding. Considering the effects of redundant and negative high-dimensional features, model overfitting easily occurs. Therefore, linear local tangent space alignment (LLTSA) is used for feature dimension reduction. Finally, the obtained dimensionality reduction features are used to train the SVM for voice disorder classification. Fivefold cross-validation is used to verify the classification performance of the OpenL3-SVM. The experimental results show that OpenL3-SVM can effectively classify voice disorders automatically, and its performance exceeds that of the existing methods. Eye movement data has been extensively utilized by researchers interested in studying decision-making within the strategic setting of economic games. In this paper, we demonstrate that both deep learning and support vector machine classification methods are able to accurately identify participants' decision strategies before they commit to action while playing games. Our approach focuses on creating scanpath images that best capture the dynamics of a participant's gaze behaviour in a way that is meaningful for predictions to the machine learning models. Our results demonstrate a higher classification accuracy by 18% points compared to a baseline logistic regression model, which is traditionally used to analyse gaze data recorded during economic games. In a broader context, we aim to illustrate the potential for eye-tracking data to create information asymmetries in strategic environments in favour of those who collect and process the data. These information asymmetries could become especially relevant as eye-tracking is expected to become more widespread in user applications, with the seemingly imminent mass adoption of virtual reality systems and the development of devices with the ability to record eye movement outside of a laboratory setting. Breast cancer (BC) is spreading more and more every day. Therefore, a patient's life can be saved by its early discovery. Mammography is frequently used to diagnose BC. The classification of mammography region of interest (ROI) patches (i.e., normal, malignant, or benign) is the most crucial phase in this process since it helps medical professionals to identify BC. In this paper, a hybrid technique that carries out a quick and precise classification that is appropriate for the BC diagnosis system is proposed and tested. Three different Deep Learning (DL) Convolution Neural Network (CNN) models—namely, Inception-V3, ResNet50, and AlexNet—are used in the current study as feature extractors. To extract useful features from each CNN model, our suggested method uses the Term Variance (TV) feature selection algorithm. The TV-selected features from each CNN model are combined and a further selection is performed to obtain the most useful features which are sent later to the multiclass support vector machine (MSVM) classifier. The Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) image database was used to test the effectiveness of the suggested method for classification. The mammogram's ROI is retrieved, and image patches are assigned to it. Based on the results of testing several TV feature subsets, the 600-feature subset with the highest classification performance was discovered. Higher classification accuracy (CA) is attained when compared to previously published work. The average CA for 70% of training is 97.81%, for 80% of training, it is 98%, and for 90% of training, it reaches its optimal value. Acute lung injury (ALI) is a serious respiratory disease, which can lead to acute respiratory failure or death. It is closely related to the pathogenesis of New Coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19). Many researches showed that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) had a good effect on its intervention, and network pharmacology could play a very important role. In order to construct "disease-gene-target-drug" interaction network more accurately, deep learning algorithm is utilized in this paper. Two ALI-related target genes (REAL and SATA3) are considered, and the active and inactive compounds of the two corresponding target genes are collected as training data, respectively. Molecular descriptors and molecular fingerprints are utilized to characterize each compound. Forest graph embedded deep feed forward network (forgeNet) is proposed to train. The experimental results show that forgeNet performs better than support vector machines (SVM), random forest (RF), logical regression (LR), Naive Bayes (NB), XGBoost, LightGBM and gcForest. forgeNet could identify 19 compounds in Erhuang decoction (EhD) and Dexamethasone (DXMS) more accurately. In recent years, more and more deep learning frameworks are being applied to hyperspectral image classification tasks and have achieved great results. However, the existing network models have higher model complexity and require more time consumption. Traditional hyperspectral image classification methods tend to ignore the correlation between local spatial features. In this paper, a new hyperspectral image classification method is proposed, which combines two-dimensional Gabor filter with random patch convolution (GRPC) feature extraction to obtain spatial-spectral feature information. The method firstly performs dimensionality reduction through principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis and extracts the edge texture and spatial information of the image using a Gabor filter for the reduced-dimensional image. Next, the extracted information is convolved with random patches to extract spectral features. Finally, the spatial features and multi-level spectral features are fused to classify the images using the Support Vector Machine classifier. In order to verify the performance of this method, experiments were conducted on three widely used datasets of Indian Pines, Pavia University and Kennedy Space Center. The overall classification accuracy reached 98.09%, 99.64% and 96.53%, which are all higher than other comparison methods. Training machine learning models on classical computers is usually a time and compute intensive process. With Moore's law nearing its inevitable end and an ever-increasing demand for large-scale data analysis using machine learning, we must leverage non-conventional computing paradigms like quantum computing to train machine learning models efficiently. Adiabatic quantum computers can approximately solve NP-hard problems, such as the quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO), faster than classical computers. Since many machine learning problems are also NP-hard, we believe adiabatic quantum computers might be instrumental in training machine learning models efficiently in the post Moore's law era. In order to solve problems on adiabatic quantum computers, they must be formulated as QUBO problems, which is very challenging. In this paper, we formulate the training problems of three machine learning models—linear regression, support vector machine (SVM) and balanced k-means clustering—as QUBO problems, making them conducive to be trained on adiabatic quantum computers. We also analyze the computational complexities of our formulations and compare them to corresponding state-of-the-art classical approaches. We show that the time and space complexities of our formulations are better (in case of SVM and balanced k-means clustering) or equivalent (in case of linear regression) to their classical counterparts.
