Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are a growing highlight in polymer chemistry. They are chemically and thermally stable, may be used in a variety of environments, and fulfill a wide range of applications. Computer-aided studies of MIPs often involve the use of computational techniques to design, analyze, and optimize the production of MIPs. Limited information is available on the computational study of interactions between the epinephrine (EPI) MIP and its target molecule. A rational design for EPI-MIP preparation was performed in this study. First, density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation were used for the screening of functional monomers suitable for the design of MIPs of EPI in the presence of a crosslinker and a solvent environment. Among the tested functional monomers, acrylic acid (AA) was the most appropriate monomer for EPI-MIP formulation. The trends observed for five out of six DFT functionals assessed confirmed AA as the suitable monomer. The theoretical optimal molar ratio was 1:4 EPI:AA in the presence of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and acetonitrile. The effect of temperature was analyzed at this ratio of EPI:AA on mean square displacement, X-ray diffraction, density distribution, specific volume, radius of gyration, and equilibrium energies. The stability observed for all these parameters is much better, ranging from 338 to 353 K. This temperature may determine the processing and operating temperature range of EPI-MIP development using AA as a functional monomer. Vinyl-addition polynorbornenes are candidates for designing high-performance polymers due to unique characteristics, which include a high glass transition temperature associated with a rigid backbone. Recent studies have established that the processability and properties of these polymers can be fine-tuned by using targeted substitutions. However, synthesis with different catalysts results in materials with distinct properties, potentially due to the presence of various stereoisomers that are difficult to quantify experimentally. Herein, we develop all-atom models of polynorbornene oligomers based on classical force fields and density functional theory. To establish the relationship between chemical architecture, chain conformations, and melt structure, we perform detailed molecular dynamics simulations with the fine-tuned atomistic force field and propose simpler coarse-grained descriptions to address the high molecular weight limit. All-atom simulations of oligomers suggest high glass transition temperatures in the range of 550–600 K. In the melt state (800 K), meso chains form highly rigid extended coils ( C ∞ ≈ 11 ) with amorphous structural characteristics similar to the X-ray diffraction data observed in the literature. Organosilicate glass (OSG) films are a critical component in modern electronic devices, with their electrical properties playing a crucial role in device performance. This comprehensive review systematically examines the influence of chemical composition, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation, and plasma treatment on the electrical properties of these films. Through an extensive survey of literature and experimental findings, we elucidate the intricate interplay between these factors and the resulting alterations in electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and breakdown strength of OSG films. Key focus areas include the impact of diverse organic moieties incorporated into the silica matrix, the effects of VUV irradiation on film properties, and the modifications induced by various plasma treatment techniques. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms governing these phenomena are discussed, shedding light on the complex molecular interactions and structural rearrangements occurring within OSG films under different environmental conditions. It is shown that phonon-assisted electron tunneling between adjacent neutral traps provides a more accurate description of charge transport in OSG low-k materials compared to the previously reported Fowler–Nordheim mechanism. Additionally, the quality of low-k materials significantly influences the behavior of leakage currents. Materials retaining residual porogens or adsorbed water on pore walls show electrical conductivity directly correlated with pore surface area and porosity. Conversely, porogen-free materials, developed by Urbanowicz, exhibit leakage currents that are independent of porosity. This underscores the critical importance of considering internal defects such as oxygen-deficient centers (ODC) or similar entities in understanding the electrical properties of these materials. We conducted a computational study on the self-assembly behavior of cylinder-forming block copolymers, directed by a guide pattern of hexagonally or tetragonally arrayed pillars, using mesoscale density functional theory simulations. By adjusting the spacing ( L p ) and diameter (D) of the pillars in relation to the intrinsic cylinder-to-cylinder distance ( L 2 ) of the cylinder-forming block copolymer, we investigated the efficiency of multiple-replicating cylinders, generated by the block copolymer, through the pillar-directed self-assembly process. The simulations demonstrated that at specific values of normalized parameters L ˜ 2 = L 2 / L p and D ˜ = D / L p coupled with suitable surface fields, triple and quadruple replications are achievable with a hexagonally arrayed pillar pattern, while only double replication is attainable with a tetragonally arrayed pillar pattern. This work, offering an extensive structure map encompassing a wide range of possible parameter spaces, including L ˜ 2 and D ˜ , serves as a valuable guide for designing the contact hole patterning essential in nanoelectronics applications. Since the discovery of α-diimine catalysts in 1995, an extensive series of Brookhart-type complexes have shown their excellence in catalyzing ethylene polymerizations with remarkable activity and a high molecular weight. However, although this class of palladium complexes has proven proficiency in catalyzing ethylene copolymerization with various polar monomers, the α-diimine nickel catalysts have generally exhibited a much worse performance in these copolymerizations compared to their palladium counterparts. Recently, Brookhart et al. reported a notable exception, demonstrating that α-diimine nickel catalysts could catalyze the ethylene copolymerization with some vinylalkoxysilanes effectively, producing functionalized polyethylene incorporating trialkoxysilane (-Si(OR)3) groups. This breakthrough is significant since Pd-catalyzed copolymerizations are commercially less usable due to the high cost of palladium. Thus, the utilization of Ni, given its abundance in raw materials and cost-effectiveness, is a landmark in ethylene/polar vinyl monomer copolymerization. Inspired by these findings, we used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the mechanistic study of ethylene copolymerization with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMoS) catalyzed by Brookhart-type nickel catalysts, aiming to elucidate the molecular-level understanding of this unique reaction. Initially, the nickel complexes and cationic active species were optimized through DFT calculations. Subsequently, we explored the mechanisms including the chain initiation, chain propagation, and chain termination of ethylene homopolymerization and copolymerization catalyzed by Brookhart-type complexes. Finally, we conducted an energetic analysis of both the in-chain and chain-end of silane enchainment. It was found that chain initiation is the dominant step in the ethylene homopolymerization catalyzed by the α-diimine Ni complex. The 1,2- and 2,1-insertion of vinylalkoxysilane exhibit similar barriers, explaining the fact that both five-membered and four-membered chelates were identified experimentally. After the VTMoS insertion, the barriers of ethylene reinsertion become higher, indicating that this step is the rate-determining step, which could be attributed to the steric hindrance between the incoming ethylene and the bulky silane substrate. We have also reported the energetic analysis of the distribution of polar substrates. The dominant pathway of chain-end -Si(OR)3 incorporation is suggested as chain-walking → ring-opening → ethylene insertion, and the preference of chain-end -Si(OR)3 incorporation is primarily attributed to the steric repulsion between the pre-inserted silane group and the incoming ethylene molecule, reducing the likelihood of in-chain incorporation. This study outlines the investigation into how the compounds CO2, CO, and O2 interact with the active center of titanium (Ti) on the surface of MgCl2 and how these interactions impact the productivity of the Ziegler–Natta catalyst, ultimately influencing the thermal stability of the produced polypropylene. The calculations revealed that the adsorption energies of Ti-CO2-CO and O2 were −9.6, −12.5, and −2.32 Kcal/mol, respectively. Using the density functional theory in quantum calculations, the impacts of electronic properties and molecular structure on the adsorption of CO, O2, and CO2 on the Ziegler–Natta catalyst were thoroughly explored. Additionally, the Gibbs free energy and enthalpy of adsorption were examined. It was discovered that strong adsorption and a significant energy release (−16.2 kcal/mol) during CO adsorption could explain why this gas caused the most substantial reductions in the ZN catalyst productivity. These findings are supported by experimental tests showing that carbon monoxide has the most significant impact on the ZN catalyst productivity, followed by carbon dioxide, while oxygen exerts a less pronounced inhibitory effect. Crystalline poly-para-xylylene (parylene) has the potential for use as a protective membrane to delay the nucleation of explosives by separating the explosives and their decomposition products to decrease the explosive sensitivity. Here, molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) techniques were used to calculate the dissociative adsorption configurations of 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7) on (001)- and (101)-oriented crystalline parylene membranes. Based on the results of the calculations, this work demonstrates that the -NO2–π electrostatic interactions are the dominant passivation mechanism of FOX-7 on these oriented surfaces. FOX-7 can dissociatively adsorb on oriented parylene membranes due to the interactions between the LUMO of the toluene (or methyl) groups on parylene and the HOMO of the -NO2 (or -NH2) groups on FOX-7. The formation of a new intermolecular H-bond with the ONO group leads to FOX-7 decomposition via intramolecular C-NO2 bond fission and nitro-to-nitrite rearrangement. The most likely adsorption configurations are described in terms of the decomposition products, surface active groups of parylene, binding behaviors, and N charge transfer. Importantly, the (001)-oriented parylene AF8 membrane is promising for use as a protective membrane to passivate the high-energy -NO2 bonds during the dissociative adsorption of FOX-7. The design of novel acceptor molecular structures based on classical building blocks is regarded as one of the efficient ways to explore the application of organic conjugated materials in conductivity and electronics. Here, a novel acceptor moiety, thiophene-vinyl-diketopyrrolopyrrole (TVDPP), was envisioned and prepared with a longer conjugation length and a more rigid structure than thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole (TDPP). The brominated TVDPP can be sequentially bonded to trimethyltin-containing benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole units via Suzuki polycondensation to efficiently prepare the polymer PTVDPP-BSz, which features high molecular weight and excellent thermal stability. The polymerization process takes only 24 h and eliminates the need for chlorinated organic solvents or toxic tin-based reagents. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations and film morphology analyses verify the planarity and high crystallinity of the material, respectively, which facilitates the achievement of high carrier mobility. Conductivity measurements of the polymeric material in the organic transistor device show a hole mobility of 0.34 cm2 V−1 s−1, which illustrates its potential for functionalized semiconductor applications. The citric acid (CA) cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) adsorbent, PVA–CA, was efficiently synthesized and its application to the removal of dyes in water, particularly the cationic dye, methylene blue (MB), was thoroughly investigated. The morphologies and physiochemical characteristics of PVA–CA were fully characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XRD, TGA, BET, and XPS. The effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, MB concentration, solution pH, and temperature on the adsorption performance were compared using controllable methods. The maximum adsorption capacity of PVA–CA was 709.86 mg g−1 and the removal rate remained high through several adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating that such a composite absorbent has a good adsorption performance and recoverability. Further analysis by the density functional theory (DFT) showed that van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions between PVA–CA and MB played significant roles in the adsorption mechanism. Ferric stearate (FeSt3) is very efficient in accelerating polyethylene (PE) degradation, but there is a lack of exploration of its role in accelerating the early stages of polyethylene photo-oxidative degradation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of FeSt3 on the photo-oxidative degradation of PE films, especially in the early stages of photo-oxidative degradation. The results show that FeSt3 not only promotes the oxidative degradation of PE but also contributes significantly to the early behavior of photo-oxidative degradation. Moreover, the results of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that the C-H in the FeSt3 ligand was more easily dissociated compared with the PE matrix. The generated H radicals participate in the coupling reaction of the primary alkyl macro radicals leading to the molecular weight reduction, thus significantly increasing the initial rate of molecular weight reduction of PE. Meanwhile, the transfer reaction of the dissociation-generated C-centered radicals induced the PE matrix to produce more secondary alkyl macroradicals, which shortened the time to enter the oxidative degradation stage. This finding reveals the mechanism by which FeSt3 promotes the degradation of PE at the early stage of photo-oxidative degradation. Nowadays, fluorophores with a tetraphenylethylene (TPE) core are considered interesting due to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior that enables their effective use in polymer films. We propose a novel TPE fluorophore (TPE-BPAN) bearing two dimethylamino push and a 4-biphenylacetonitrile pull moieties with the typical AIE characteristics in solution and in the solid state, as rationalized by DFT calculations. Five different host polymer matrices with different polarity have been selected: two homopolymers of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (PCHMA) and three copolymers at different compositions (P(MMA-co-CHMA) 75:25, 50:50, and 25:75 mol%). The less polar comonomer of CHMA appeared to enhance TPE-BPAN emission with the highest quantum yield (QY) of about 40% measured in P(MMA-co-CHMA) 75:25. Further reduction in polymer polarity lowered QY and decreased the film stability and adhesion to the glass surface. LSC performances were not significantly affected by the matrix's polarity and resulted in around one-third of the state-of-the-art due to the reduced QY of TPE-BPAN. In this work, we report a two-step methodology for the synthesis of small silver nanoparticles embedded into hydrogels based on chitosan (CS) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) biopolymers. This method uses d-glucose as an external green reducing agent and purified water as a solvent, leading to an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and biocompatible process for the synthesis of silver nanocomposite hydrogels. Their characterization comprises ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy assays. Moreover, the structural stability of the hydrogels was investigated through sequential swelling–deswelling cycles. The nanomaterials showed good mechanical properties in terms of their structural stability and revealed prominent antibacterial properties due to the reduced-size particles that promote their use as new advanced antimicrobial agents, an advantage compared to conventional particles in aqueous suspension that lose stability and effectiveness. Finally, theoretical analyses provided insights into the possible interactions, charge transfer, and stabilization process of nanoclusters mediated by the high-electron-density groups belonging to CS and HPMC, revealing their unique structural properties in the preparation of nano-scaled materials. Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to investigate the promotion of B(C6F5)3 as a ligand for titanium (or vanadium) catalysts in ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization reactions. The results reveal that (I) Ethylene insertion into TiB (with B(C6F5)3 as a ligand) is preferred over TiH, both thermodynamically and kinetically. (II) In TiH and TiB catalysts, the 2,1 insertion reaction (TiH21 and TiB21) is the primary pathway for 1-hexene insertion. Furthermore, the 1-hexene insertion reaction for TiB21 is favored over TiH21 and is easier to perform. Consequently, the entire ethylene and 1-hexene insertion reaction proceeds smoothly using the TiB catalyst to yield the final product. (III) Analogous to the Ti catalyst case, VB (with B(C6F5)3 as a ligand) is preferred over VH for the entire ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization reaction. Moreover, VB exhibits higher reaction activity than TiB, thus agreeing with experimental results. Additionally, the electron localization function and global reactivity index analysis indicate that titanium (or vanadium) catalysts with B(C6F5)3 as a ligand exhibit higher reactivity. Investigating the promotion of B(C6F5)3 as a ligand for titanium (or vanadium) catalysts in ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization reactions will aid in designing novel catalysts and lead to more cost-effective polymerization production methods. A novel recoverable magnetic Cd(II) ion-imprinted polymer was synthesized on the surface of silica-coated Fe3O4 particles via the surface imprinting technique and chemical grafting method. The resulting polymer was used as a highly efficient adsorbent for the removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption experiments revealed that Fe3O4@SiO2@IIP had a maximum adsorption capacity of up to 29.82 mg·g−1 for Cd(II) at an optimal pH of 6, with the adsorption equilibrium achieved within 20 min. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of Cd(II) on the imprinted polymer was spontaneous and entropy-increasing. Furthermore, the Fe3O4@SiO2@IIP could rapidly achieve solid–liquid separation in the presence of an external magnetic field. More importantly, despite the poor affinity of the functional groups constructed on the polymer surface for Cd(II), we improved the specific selectivity of the imprinted adsorbent for Cd(II) through surface imprinting technology. C5F10O is a promising insulating medium in the manufacturing of environmentally friendly gas-insulated switchgears (GISs). The fact that it is not known whether it is compatible with sealing materials used in GISs limits its application. In this paper, the deterioration behaviors and mechanism of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) after prolonged exposure to C5F10O are studied. The influence of C5F10O/N2 mixture on the deterioration process of NBR is analyzed through a thermal accelerated ageing experiment. The interaction mechanism between C5F10O and NBR is considered based on microscopic detection and density functional theory. Subsequently, the effect of this interaction on the elasticity of NBR is calculated through molecular dynamics simulations. According to the results, the polymer chain of NBR can slowly react with C5F10O, leading to deterioration of its surface elasticity and loss of inside additives, mainly ZnO and CaCO3. This consequently reduces the compression modulus of NBR. The interaction is related to CF3 radicals formed by the primary decomposition of C5F10O. The molecular structure of NBR will be changed in the molecular dynamics simulations due to the addition reaction with CF3 on NBR's backbone or branched chains, resulting in changes in Lame constants and a decrease in elastic parameters. Gemini surfactant corrosion inhibitor (CI) is one type of CI mainly used in mitigating corrosion in the complex system of oil/gas production industries. Computer modeling methods such as density functional theory (DFT) calculation and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation are required to develop new CI molecules focusing on their application condition as a prediction or screening process before the physical empirical assessment. In this work, the adsorption inhibition efficiencies of two monomer surfactants (2B and H) and their respective Gemini structures with the addition of different spacers (alkyl, benzene, ester, ether, and ketone) are investigated using DFT calculation and MD simulation method in 3% sodium chloride (NaCl), and 1500 ppm acetic acid solutions. In DFT calculation, 2B-benzene molecules are assumed to have the most promising inhibition efficiency based on their high reactivity and electron-donating ability at their electron-rich benzene ring region based on the lowest bandgap energy (0.765 eV) and highest HOMO energy value (−2.879 eV), respectively. DFT calculation results correlate with the adsorption energy calculated from MD simulation, where 2B-benzene is also assumed to work better as a CI molecule with the most adsorption strength towards Fe (110) metal with the highest negative adsorption energy value (−1837.33 kJ/mol at temperature 323 K). Further, diffusion coefficient and molecular aggregation analysis in different CI concentrations through MD simulation reveals that only a small amount of Gemini surfactant CI is needed in the inhibition application compared to its respective monomer. Computer simulation methods successfully predict and screen the Gemini surfactant CI molecules that can work better as a corrosion inhibitor in acetic acid media. The amount of Gemini surfactant CI that needs to be used is also predicted. The future planning or way forward from this study will be the development of the most promising Gemini surfactant CI based on the results from DFT calculation and MD simulations. In this work, a novel metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-based ion-imprinted polymer (MIIP) was prepared to remove Co(II) from simulated radioactive wastewater. The batch experiments indicated that the sorption was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, and it is monolayer chemisorption. The theoretical maximum sorption capacity was estimated to be 181.5 mg∙g−1, which is by far the reported maximum value of Co(II) sorption by the imprinted materials. The MIIP presented an excellent selectivity for Co(II) in the presence of common monovalent and divalent metal ions, and the selectivity coefficients were 44.31, 33.19, 10.84, 27.71, 9.45, 16.25, and 7.60 to Li(I), K(I), Mg(II), Ca(II), Mn(II), Ba(II), and Cd(II), respectively. The sorption mechanism was explored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technology and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, suggesting that Co(II) was adsorbed by the MIIP via the chelation of 4-vinylpyridine (VP) ligands with Co(II), which was a spontaneous process, and the optimal coordination ratio of VP to Co(II) was 6. This work suggested that the MIIP has a high sorption capacity and excellent selectivity for Co(II), which is of great significance for the selective separation of Co-60 from radioactive wastewater. Six Cd(II)/Mn(II)/Co(II)/Ni(II)/Zn(II) coordination complexes are formulated as [Cd2(X2−)2(μ3-O)2/3]n (1), [Mn2(X2−)2(μ3-O)2/3]n (2), {[Co1.5(Y4−)0.5(4,4′-bpy)1.5(OH−)]·2H2O}n (3), {[Ni(X2−)(4,4′-bpy)(H2O)2]·4H2O}n (4), [Zn(m-bdc2−)(bebiyh)]n (5), and [Cd(5-tbia2−)(bebiyh)]n (6) (H2X = 3,3′-(2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylene) dipropionic acid. H4Y = 2,2′-(2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene) dimalonic acid, bebiyh = 1,6-bis(2-ethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)hexane, m-H2bdc = 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, and 5-H2tbia = 5-(tert-butyl)isophthalic acid) were obtained by hydrothermal reactions and structurally characterized. Complexes 1 and 2 have a 6-connected 3D architecture and with several point symbols of (36·46·53). Complex 3 features a 5-connected 3D net structure with a point symbol of (5·69). Complex 4 possesses a 4-connected 2D net with a vertex symbol of (44·62). Complex 5 is a 3-connected 2D network with a point symbol of (63). Complex 6 is a (3,3)-connected 2D network with a point symbol of (63)2. In addition, complexes 1 and 4 present good photoluminescence behaviors. Polyethylene is one of the most used polymers in a variety of sectors. A typical technique used to assess aging is infrared spectroscopy. Under oxidation, the region of the spectrum that is most studied is the one containing the carbonyl signature. However, various carbonyl groups contribute to the carbonyl peak: ketones, aldehydes, esters, lactones, carboxylic acids, and more. A usual procedure to quantify each of them is the deconvolution of experimental peaks based on experimental assignments of infrared bands. In this paper, we complement this procedure, applied to two polyethylene types, with extended density functional theory (DFT) calculations of infrared spectra, using a polyethylene model mimicking the main features of a semicrystalline polymer. We compare theoretical frequencies and infrared intensities with parameters extracted from the literature that are used to, eventually, estimate concentrations. We provide an alternative estimation entirely based on theoretical data, showing that DFT can be a valuable tool to analyze, or at least complement, experimental data to assess polymer aging. The comparison of different deconvolution procedures raises the question of the contribution of conjugated ketones in the global carbonyl buildup, as well as that of ketones/alcohols pairs, or the relative concentration of esters and aldehydes. In this study, the quantum chemical method was used to investigate the microscopic characteristics of α-poly viny difluoride (PVDF) molecules under the influence of an electric field, and the impact of mechanical stress and electric field polarization on the insulation performance of PVDF was analyzed through the material's structural and space charge characteristics. The findings reveal that long-term polarization of an electric field leads to a gradual decline in stability and a reduction in the energy gap of the front orbital, resulting in the improved conductivity of PVDF molecules and a change in the reactive active site of the molecular chain. When the energy gap reaches a certain value, a chemical bond fracture occurs, with the C-H and C-F bonds at the ends of the backbone breaking first to form free radicals. This process is triggered by an electric field of 8.7414 × 109 V/m, which leads to the emergence of a virtual frequency in the infrared spectrogram and the eventual breakdown of the insulation material. The ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is utilized in high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable accessories due to its exceptional insulation properties. The microscopic reactions and space charge characteristics of EPDM under electric fields are studied using density functional theory. The results indicate that as the electric field intensity increases, the total energy decreases while the dipole moment and polarizability increase, leading to a decrease in the stability of EPDM. The molecular chain elongates under the stretching effect of the electric field and the stability of the geometric structure decreases, resulting in a decline in its mechanical and electrical properties. With increased electric field intensity, the energy gap of the front orbital decreases, and its conductivity improves. Additionally, the active site of the molecular chain reaction shifts, leading to different degrees of hole trap and electron trap energy level distribution in the area where the front track of the molecular chain is located, making EPDM more susceptible to trapping free electrons or injecting charge. When the electric field intensity reaches 0.0255 a.u., the EPDM molecular structure is destroyed, and its infrared spectrum undergoes significant changes. Scale formation causes major losses in oil wells, related to production and equipment damages. Thus, it is important to develop effective materials to prevent scale formation and inhibit any additional formation. One known environmentally friendly material with promising performance for scale inhibition is polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA). However, the performance and further development of any scale treatment chemical is highly affected by its electronic structure and behavior. Thus, this paper aims to obtain insights into the kinetics and thermodynamics of the chemical reactions during scale inhibition by investigating the geometrical and electronic structure of PESA. Density Functional Theory (B3LYP/6–31 g (d)-lanl2dz) was used to study the structure of PESA, considering different forms of PESA and their corresponding binding affinities and chemical behaviors. The scale is represented as FeII ions, and PESA is modeled as (n = 1, and 2). Three conditions of PESA were considered: the standard form, the form with a modified electron donating group (R- = CH3-), and ammonium salt of PESA (M+ = NH4+). The results showed that PESA has a high binding affinity to FeII, comparable to known chelating agents, with the highest binding affinity for ammonium salt of PESA with the CH3- donating group (−1530 kJ/mol). The molecular orbitals (MO), electron affinity (EA), and charge analysis further explained the findings. The HOMO-LUMO gap and EA results revealed the high reactivity and thermodynamic stability of all forms of PESA. In addition, the ammonium salt form of PESA with the electron donating group performs better, as it has a greater overall negative charge in the compounds. Furthermore, the NH4+ cationic group tends to lower the value of the HOMO orbital, which increases the inhibition performance of PESA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Density Functional Theory is employed to study depletion interactions between nanoparticles mediated by semiflexible polymers. The four key parameters are the chain contour length and the persistence length of the polymeric depletant, its radius of gyration, and the nanoparticle radius. In the Density Functional Theory calculation of the depletion interaction between the nanoparticles mediated by semiflexible polymers, the polymer gyration radius is kept constant by varying the contour length and the persistence length simultaneously. This makes it possible to study the effect of the chain stiffness on the depletion potential of mean force between the nanoparticles for a given depletant size. It is found that the depletion attraction becomes stronger for stiffer polymer chains and larger colloids. Density functional theory has been used to elucidate the mechanism of Pd copolymerization of cyclopropenone with ethylene. The results reveal that introducing ethylene and cyclopropenone to Pd catalyst is thermodynamically feasible and generates the α,β-unsaturated ketone unit (UnitA). Cis-mode insertion and Path A1a are the most favorable reaction routes for ethylene and cyclopropenone, respectively. Moreover, cyclopropenone decomposition can generate CO in situ without a catalyst or with a Pd catalyst. The Pd-catalyzed decomposition of cyclopropenone exhibits a lower reaction barrier (22.7 kcal/mol) than its direct decomposition. Our study demonstrates that incorporating CO into the Pd catalyst can generate the isolated ketone unit (UnitB). CO is formed first; thereafter, UnitB is generated. Therefore, the total energy barrier of UnitB generation, accounting for the CO barrier, is 22.7 kcal/mol, which is slightly lower than that of UnitA generation (24.0 kcal/mol). Additionally, the possibility of copolymerizing ethylene, cyclopropenone, and allyl acetate (AAc) has been investigated. The free energy and global reactivity index analyses indicate that the cyclopropenone introduction reaction is more favorable than the AAc insertion, which is consistent with the experimental results. Manipulation of nanoscale objects using molecular self-assembly is a potent tool to achieve large scale nanopatterning with small effort. Coordination polymers of bis-salphen compounds based on zinc have demonstrated their ability to align carbon nanotubes into micro-scale networks with an unusual "rings-and-rods" pattern. This paper investigates how the compounds interact with pristine and functionalized graphene using density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamic simulations. Using the free energy perturbation method we will show how the addition of phenyl side groups to the core compound and functionalization of graphene affect the stability, mobility and conformation adopted by a dimer of bis-(Zn)salphen compound adsorbed on graphene surface and what it can reveal about the arrangement of chains of bis-(Zn)salphen polymer around carbon nanotubes during the self-assembly of microscale networks. Mechanical amorphization of three chitosan samples with high, medium, and low molecular weight was studied. It is shown that there are no significant differences between the course of amorphization process in a planetary ball mill of chitosan with different molecular weights, and the maximum degree of amorphization was achieved in 600 s of high intensity mechanical action. Specific energy consumption was 28 kJ/g, being comparable to power consumption for amorphization of cellulose determined previously (29 kJ/g) and 5–7-fold higher than that for amorphization of starch (4–6 kJ/g). Different techniques for determining the crystallinity index (CrI) of chitosan (analysis of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, the peak height method, the amorphous standard method, peak deconvolution, and full-profile Rietveld analysis) were compared. The peak height method is characterized by a broader working range but provides deviated CrI values. The peak deconvolution method (with the amorphous Voigt function) makes it possible to calculate the crystallinity index of chitosan with greater accuracy, but the analysis becomes more difficult with samples subjected to mechanical processing. In order to refine the structure and calculation of CrI by the Rietveld method, an attempt to optimize the structure file by the density functional theory (DFT) method was performed. The averaged profile of amorphous chitosan approximated by an eighth-order Fourier model improved the correctness of the description of the amorphous contribution for XRD data processing. The proposed equation may be used as a universal standard model of amorphous chitosan to determine the crystallinity index both for the amorphous standard method and for peak deconvolution of XRD patterns for arbitrary chitosan samples. The aim of the study was to present the influence of various styrylquinoline (StQ) substituents on the luminescence, structural, and optical properties of StQ-containing copolymers. StQ-containing copolymers were synthesized by free-radical thermoinitiated polymerization. The calculations of the copolymerization ratios for the obtained copolymers were based on the basis of the integrated peak areas of the 1H NMR spectra in CDCl3. The luminescence measurements show that the change in the nature of the electron-donating and electron-withdrawing of the substituent shifts the emission band to longer wavelengths and causes a transition from blue fluorescence to green or yellow and orange (or even white), regardless of the electronic nature of the introduced substituent group. The structural properties were measured by Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies. For all of the compounds, we observed similarities in the bands in FTIR and Raman measurements. The optical parameters were obtained from the absorbance measurements. Additionally, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface topography of the thin layers on the glass substrate. The SEM images confirm that we obtained smoother layers for two copolymers. The computational Density Functional Theory (DFT) analysis fully supports the beneficial features of the analyzed systems for their applications in optoelectronic devices. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that all of the studied styrylquinolines are promising materials for applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The transformation of lignin with natural aromatic structure into value-added carbon dots (CDs) achieves a win-win situation for low-cost production of novel nanomaterials and reasonable disposal of biomass waste. However, it remains challenging to produce multi-emission CDs from biomass for advanced applications. Herein, a green and facile approach to preparing multi-emission CDs from alkali lignin via N and B co-doping is developed. The obtained N and B co-doped CDs (NB-CDs) show multi-emission fluorescence centers at 346, 428 and 514 nm under different excitations. As the doping amount of N and B increases, the fluorescence emission band gradually shifts to 428 and 514 nm, while that at 346 nm decreases. The fluorescence mechanism is explored through the research of the structure, composition and optical performance of NB-CDs in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It demonstrates that the effect of doping with B-containing functional groups on the fluorescence emission behavior is multivariate, which may be the crucial contribution to the unique multi-emission fluorescence of CDs. The multi-emission NB-CDs with prominent stability are applied for multilevel anti-counterfeiting printing. It provides a promising direction for the sustainable and advanced application of biomass-derived CDs, and the theoretical results highlight a new insight into the deep understanding of the multi-emission fluorescence mechanism. The calcium carbonate (CaCO3) scale is one of the most common oilfield scales and oil and gas production bane. CaCO3 scale can lead to a sudden halt in production or, worst-case scenario, accidents; therefore, CaCO3 scale formation prevention is essential for the oil and gas industry. Scale inhibitors are chemicals that can mitigate this problem. We used two popular theoretical techniques in this study: Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD). The objective was to investigate the inhibitory abilities of mixed oligomers, specifically acrylamide functionalized silica (AM-Silica). DFT studies indicate that Ca2+ does not bind readily to acryl acid and acrylamide; however, it has a good binding affinity with PAM and Silica functionalized PAM. The highest binding affinity occurs in the silica region and not the –CONH functional groups. AIMD calculations corroborate the DFT studies, as observed from the MD trajectory that Ca2+ binds to PAM-Silica by forming bonds with silicon; however, Ca2+ initially forms a bond with silicon in the presence of water molecules. This bonding does not last long, and it subsequently bonds with the oxygen atoms present in the water molecule. PAM-Silica is a suitable calcium scale inhibitor because of its high binding affinity with Ca2+. When producing stable electrodes, polymeric binders are highly functional materials that are effective in dispersing lithium-based oxides such as Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) and carbon-based materials and establishing the conductivity of the multiphase composites. Nowadays, binders such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are used, requiring dedicated recycling strategies due to their low biodegradability and use of toxic solvents to dissolve it. Better structuring of the carbon layers and a low amount of binder could reduce the number of inactive materials in the electrode. In this study, we use computational and experimental methods to explore the use of the poly amino acid poly-L-lysine (PLL) as a novel biodegradable binder that is placed directly between nanostructured LTO and reduced graphene oxide. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations allowed us to determine that the (111) surface is the most stable LTO surface exposed to lysine. We performed Kubo–Greenwood electrical conductivity (KGEC) calculations to determine the electrical conductivity values for the hybrid LTO–lysine–rGO system. We found that the presence of the lysine-based binder at the interface increased the conductivity of the interface by four-fold relative to LTO–rGO in a lysine monolayer configuration, while two-stack lysine molecules resulted in 0.3-fold (in the plane orientation) and 0.26-fold (out of plane orientation) increases. These outcomes suggest that monolayers of lysine would specifically favor the conductivity. Experimentally, the assembly of graphene oxide on poly-L-lysine-TiO2 with sputter-deposited titania as a smooth and hydrophilic model substrate was investigated using a layer-by-layer (LBL) approach to realize the required composite morphology. Characterization techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the formed layers. Our experimental results show that thin layers of rGO were assembled on the TiO2 using PLL. Furthermore, the PLL adsorbates decrease the work function difference between the rGO- and the non-rGO-coated surface and increased the specific discharge capacity of the LTO–rGO composite material. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe CMC−GE−AQ with an effective sensitive detection ability for Cu2+ was synthesized and constructed by using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the skeleton and 8-aminoquinoline (AQ) as the fluorophore. This probe exhibited a highly specific "turn-off" fluorescence response to Cu2+, and the fluorescence color changed from bright orange to colorless after adding Cu2+. The probe could selectively detect Cu2+ in a complex environment and its detection limit (LOD), the binding constant (Ka) and the numbers of binding sites (n) were calculated to be 6.4 × 10−8 mol L−1, 1.7 × 106 mol−1 L and 1.2, respectively. The sensing detection mechanism was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the probe CMC−GE−AQ was successfully applied to detect Cu2+ in real water samples, and CMC−GE−AQ-based fluorescent microspheres can serve as a convenient tool for the detection of Cu2+. The development of polymers for optoelectronic applications is an important research area; however, a deeper understanding of the effects induced by mechanical deformations on their intrinsic properties is needed to expand their applicability and improve their durability. Despite the number of recent studies on the mechanochemistry of organic materials, the basic knowledge and applicability of such concepts in these materials are far from those for their inorganic counterparts. To bring light to this, here we employ molecular modeling techniques to evaluate the effects of mechanical deformations on the structural, optoelectronic, and reactivity properties of traditional semiconducting polymers, such as polyaniline (PANI), polythiophene (PT), poly (p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), and polypyrrole (PPy). For this purpose, density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations were conducted for the distinct systems at varied stretching levels in order to identify the influence of structural deformations on the electronic structure of the systems. In general, it is noticed that the elongation process leads to an increase in electronic gaps, hypsochromic effects in the optical absorption spectrum, and small changes in local reactivities. In this study, a homologous series of novel liquid crystalline compounds bearing the bis-azomethine central linkage (–CH=N-N=CH–), namely ((1E,1′E)-hydrazine-1,2-diylidenebis(methanylylidene))bis(4,1-phenylene) dialkanoate (In), was synthesized, and the mesophase and thermal properties were investigated theoretically and experimentally. The molecular structures of the prepared compounds were determined using elemental analysis, NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The mesophase transitions were detected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the mesophases were identified using polarized optical microscopy (POM). The results indicated that the derivative with the shortest length (I5) was purely nematogenic, while the other homologues (I9 and I15) possessed SmC mesophases. The optimal geometrical structures of the investigated group were derived theoretically. The estimated results demonstrated that all homologues were mesomorphic, and their type depended on the length of the terminal chains. Computations based on density functional theory (DFT) were used to explain the experimental data. The calculated dipole moment, polarizability, thermal energy, and molecular electrostatic potential all showed that it was possible to predict the mesophase type and stability, which varied according to the size of the molecule. Two new Co(II) and Cu(II) coordination polymers, {Co(HL1)2(μ-L2)(H2O)2}n (1) and {[Cu(HL1)2(μ-L2)H2O]·H2O}n (2) (H2L1 = Phthalic acid and L2 = 2-aminopyrazine), have been synthesized by slow evaporation of solvent and characterized by IR spectroscopic, elemental, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. X-ray results indicate that in both the polymers, phthalate acts as a monodentate ligand and the aminopyrazine ligand is responsible for the formation of the infinite one-dimensional chain structure. The solid-state structures are stabilized through hydrogen bonds and N-H···π interactions by generating two-dimensional layered structures. Finally, the non-covalent interactions have been studied energetically and using Bader's theory of atoms in molecules by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Dnsity functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out for the highly selective cis-1,4-polymerization of butadiene catalyzed by a cationic rare-earth metal complex bearing an ancillary PNP ligand. It has been found that the chain initiation and propagation of butadiene polymerization occurs via the favorable cis-1,4-insertion route. The trans-1,4 and 1,2-insertion are unfavorable both kinetically and thermodynamically. The chain growth follows the π-allyl-insertion mechanism. The analyses of energy decomposition of transition states indicate that the likelihood of rival insertion pathways is predominantly controlled by the interaction energy of butadiene with a metal center and the deformation energy of butadiene moiety. The electronic factor of the central metal has a decisive influence on the cis- vs. trans-insertion and the regioselectivity (cis-1,4- vs. cis-1,2-insertion) is mainly determined by steric hindrance. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) coordination made monomer insertion less favorable compared with THF-free case and had more noticeable impact on the trans-monomer insertion compared with the cis case. The mechanisms for the base-catalyzed condensation reactions in phenol-formaldehyde resin synthesis were investigated by using the density functional theory method. The structures of the intermediates and transition states, as well as the potential energy barriers of the involved reactions, were obtained. The hypothesis of quinine methide (QM) formation was theoretically confirmed. Two mechanisms were identified forQMformation, namely E1cb (elimination unimolecular conjugate base) and water-aided intra-molecular water elimination. The latter is energetically more favorable and is proposed for the first time in this work. Based on the QM mechanism, the condensation should be a unimolecular reaction because the following condensation between an ionized species (dissociated phenol or hydroxymethylphenol) with QM is much faster. The previously proposed SN2 condensation mechanism was found to be not competitive over the QM mechanism due to a much higher energy barrier. The condensation reaction between neutral phenol or hydroxymethylphenol and QM was also found to be possible. The energy barrier of this reaction is close to or higher than that of QM formation. Therefore, the overall condensation reaction may appear to be bimolecular if such a reaction is incorporated. The elementary processes of anionic styrene polymerization in the gas phase and in cyclohexane were studied using M062X (a recently developed density functional theory (DFT) method) combined with the 6-31+G(d) basis sets, in order to clarify the complicated phenomena caused by the association of the active chain-ends and elucidate the details of the polymerization mechanism. Three types of HSt2Li (a model structure of polystyryllithium chain-ends) were obtained; the well-known first structure in which Li is coordinated to the side chain, the second structure in which Li is coordinated to the phenyl ring, (both without the penultimate unit coordination), and the third structure in which Li is coordinated to both the chain-end unit and the penultimate styrene unit. Although the third HSt2Li is the most stable as expected, the free energy for the transition state of its reaction with styrene is higher than those for the other two transition states due to its steric hindrance. The free energy for the transition state of the reaction of the second HSt2Li with styrene is the lowest, suggesting that the route through it is the predominant reaction path. The penultimate unit effect, slower addition of styrene to HSt2Li than to HStLi, is attributed to coordination of the penultimate styrene units of the polystyryllithium dimer (one of the starting materials) to its Li atoms. The calculated enthalpy for the reaction barrier of the second HSt2Li with styrene in cyclohexane was found to agree with the observed apparent activation energy in benzene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Semiflexible polymers in solution under good solvent conditions can undergo an isotropic-nematic transition. This transition is reminiscent of the well-known entropically-driven transition of hard rods described by Onsager's theory, but the flexibility of the macromolecules causes specific differences in behavior, such as anomalous long wavelength fluctuations in the ordered phase, which can be understood by the concept of the deflection length. A brief review of the recent progress in the understanding of these problems is given, summarizing results obtained by large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory. These results include also the interaction of semiflexible polymers with hard walls and the wall-induced nematic order, which can give rise to capillary nematization in thin film geometry. Various earlier theoretical approaches to these problems are briefly mentioned, and an outlook on the status of experiments is given. It is argued that in many cases of interest, it is not possible to describe the scaled densities at the isotropic-nematic transition as functions of the ratio of the contour length and the persistence length alone, but the dependence on the ratio of chain diameter and persistence length also needs to be considered. We present a density functional approach to quantitatively evaluate the microscopic conformations of polymer chains with consideration of the effects of chain stiffness, polymer concentration, and short chain molecules. For polystyrene (PS), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) melts with low-polymerization degree, as chain length increases, they display different stretching ratios and show non-universal scaling exponents due to their different chain stiffnesses. In good solvent, increase of PS concentration induces the decline of gyration radius. For PS blends containing short (m1 = 1 - 100) and long (m = 100) chains, the expansion of long chains becomes unobvious once m1 is larger than 40, which is also different to the scaling properties of ideal chain blends. In this contribution, high ortho novolac resins modified with phenylboronic acid were synthesized. The thermal stability of novolac resins cured with hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) and chemical states of B and N via a pyrolysis process were studied. For the cured o-novolac modified with phenylboronic acid, the temperature with maximum decomposition rate increased by 43.5 °C, and the char yield increased by 5.3% at 800 °C compared with cured o-novolac. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show the existence of hydrogen bonding between N of HMTA and H of phenol in modified resin. Thus, N could still be found at high temperature and C=N structure could be formed via a pyrolysis process. B2O3 was obtained at 400 °C by the cleavage of B-O-C and B-C bonds and it reduces the oxygen loss which may take part in the formation of carbon oxides in the system. The melting B2O3 on the surface of the resin will prevent small molecules and carbon oxides from releasing. The improvement in current materials science has prompted a developing need to capture the peculiarities that determine the properties of materials and how they are processed on an atomistic level. Quantum mechanics laws control the interface among atoms and electrons; thus, exact and proficient techniques for fixing the major quantum-mechanical conditions for complex many-particle, many-electron frameworks should be created. Density functional theory (DFT) marks an unequivocal advance in these endeavours. DFT has had a rapid influence on quintessential and industrial research during the last decade. The DFT system describes periodic structural systems of 2D or 3D electronics with the utilization of Bloch's theorem in the direction of Kohn–Sham wavefunctions for the significant facilitation of these schemes. This article introduces and discusses the infinite systems modelling approach required for graphene-based polymer composites or their hybrids. Aiming to understand electronic structure computations as per physics, the impressions of band structures and atomic structure envisioned along with orbital predicted density states are beneficial. Convergence facets coupled with the basic functions number and the k-points number are necessary to explain for every physicochemical characteristic in these materials. Proper utilization of DFT in graphene-based polymer composites for materials in EMI SE presents the potential of taking this niche to unprecedented heights within the next decades. A new mechanochemical method was developed to convert polymer wastes, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to fuel gases (H2, CH4, and CO) under ball-milling with KMnO4 at room temperature. By using various solid-state characterizations (XPS, SEM, EDS, FTIR, and NMR), and density functional theory calculations, it was found that the activation followed the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism. Two metal oxidant molecules were found to abstract two separate hydrogen atoms from the α–CH and β–CH units of substrates, [–βCH2–αCH(R)–]n, where R = H in PE, R = γCH3 in PP, and R = Cl in PVC, resulting in a di-radical, [–βCH•–αC•(R)–]. Subsequently, the two unpaired electrons of the di-radical were recombined into an alkene intermediate, [–βCH = αC(R)–], which underwent further oxidation to produce H2, CH4, and CO gases. The current problem of contamination caused by colored industrial effluents has led to the development of different techniques to remove these species from water. One of them, polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF), has been systematically studied in this mini review, in which research works from 1971 to date were found and analyzed. Dye retention rates of up to 99% were obtained in several cases. In addition, a brief discussion of different parameters, such as pH, interfering salts, type of polymer, dye concentration, and membrane type, and their influence in dye removal is presented. It was concluded from the above that these factors can be adapted depending on the pollutant to be remediated, in order to optimize the process. Finally, theoretical approaches have been used to understand the intermolecular interactions, and development of the studied technique. In this revision, it is possible to observe that molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, density functional theory calculations, and hybrid neural-genetic algorithms based on an evolutionary approach are the most usual approximations used for this purpose. The structure and properties of the arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) sequence of the 1FUV peptide at 0 K and body temperature (310 K) are systematically investigated in a dry and aqueous environment using more accurate ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations. The fundamental properties, such as electronic structure, interatomic bonding, partial charge distribution, and dielectric response function at 0 and 310 K are analyzed, comparing them in dry and solvated models. These accurate microscopic parameters determined from highly reliable quantum mechanical calculations are useful to define the range and strength of complex molecular interactions occurring between the RGD peptide and the integrin receptor. The in-depth bonding picture analyzed using a novel quantum mechanical metric, the total bond order (TBO), quantifies the role played by hydrogen bonds in the internal cohesion of the simulated structures. The TBO at 310 K decreases in the dry model but increases in the solvated model. These differences are small but extremely important in the context of conditions prevalent in the human body and relevant for health issues. The physical and chemical properties of a new organic composite including PVK-MEH-PPV bi-block copolymer and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were recorded. The functionalization and the charge transfer that occurs between donor and acceptor were examined and computed. In fact, the stationary and time-resolved photoluminescence properties were used to examine the effect of the PCBM on the optical properties of the PVK-MEH-PPV matrix. The photoluminescence quenching accompanied by faster PL decay confirmed the charge transfer and interaction process. The electrical and optoelectronic properties and the charge carriers' injection in the resulting composite were examined. The experimental conclusion was corroborated and confirmed by a calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Hence, the combination of experimental and theoretical results indicated that the result composite can be applied as an active layer for organic solar cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of theoretical and computational approaches in the study and development of molecular imprinting systems. These tools are being used to either improve understanding of the mechanisms underlying the function of molecular imprinting systems or for the design of new systems. Here, we present an overview of the literature describing the application of theoretical and computational techniques to the different stages of the molecular imprinting process (pre-polymerization mixture, polymerization process and ligand–molecularly imprinted polymer rebinding), along with an analysis of trends within and the current status of this aspect of the molecular imprinting field. Polyaniline (PANI) was chemically doped and functionalized with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Various characterization methods were employed to study the structure and optical properties of PANI/SWCNTs nanocomposite, such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical absorption, and stationary photoluminescence. Additionally, a theoretical study using density functional theory calculations was also carried out. It has been demonstrated that the doping process may reduce the band gap without affecting the molecular structure, leading to a better compatibility with the solar spectrum. Moreover, the functionalization process with SWCNTs was able to significantly improve the properties of the resulting nanocomposite. The final interpenetrating network of PANI/SWCNTs exhibited an optical gap of nearly 2.28 eV, from which localized states induced by the charge transfer were created at nearly 1.70 eV. In addition, the resulting donor–acceptor network leads to a separation of electron holes pairs rather than their recombination, which can be used as an active layer in photovoltaic applications and a photocatalyst for advanced oxidation processes. Density Functional Theory is employed to study structural properties and interactions between solvent-free polymer-grafted nanoparticles. Both monodisperse and bidisperse polymer brushes with variable chain stiffness are considered. The three major control parameters are the grafting density, the grafted chain length, and its stiffness. The effect of these parameters on the brush-brush overlap and attractive interaction strength is analyzed. Mixtures of semiflexible polymers with a mismatch in either their persistence lengths or their contour lengths are studied by Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics simulation. Considering lyotropic solutions under good solvent conditions, the mole fraction and pressure is systematically varied for several cases of bending stiffness κ (the normalized persistence length) and chain length N. For binary mixtures with different chain length (i.e., N A = 16 , N B = 32 or 64) but the same stiffness, isotropic-nematic phase coexistence is studied. For mixtures with the same chain length ( N = 32 ) and large stiffness disparity ( κ B / κ A = 4.9 to 8), both isotropic-nematic and nematic-nematic unmixing occur. It is found that the phase diagrams may exhibit a triple point or a nematic-nematic critical point, and that coexisting phases differ appreciably in their monomer densities. The properties of the two types of chains (nematic order parameters, chain radii, etc.) in the various phases are studied in detail, and predictions on the (anisotropic) critical behavior near the critical point of nematic-nematic unmixing are made. Understanding the degradation mechanisms of aliphatic polymers by thermal oxidation and radio-oxidation is very important in order to assess their lifetime in a variety of industrial applications. We focus here on polyethylene as a prototypical aliphatic polymer. Kinetic models describing the time evolution of the concentration of chain defects and radicals species in the material identify a relevant step in the formation and subsequent decomposition of transient hydroperoxides species, finally leading to carbonyl defects, in particular ketones. In this paper, we first summarize the most relevant mechanistic paths proposed in the literature for hydroperoxide formation and decomposition and, second, revisit them using first principles calculations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT). Our results partially confirm commonly accepted reaction energies, but also propose alternative, more favourable, reaction paths. We highlight the influence of the environment—crystalline or not—on the outcome of some of the studied chemical reactions. A remarkable result of our calculations is that hydroxyl radicals play an important role in the decomposition of hydroperoxides. Based on our findings, it should be possible to improve the set of equations and parameters used in current kinetic simulations of polyethylene radio-oxidation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
