The Seabee Gold Operation, located in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, hosts the Santoy and Seabee gold deposits, as well as the Fisher property; the latter is an important exploration target. This gold mineralization is hosted in rocks of the Pine Lake greenstone belt that is within the Glennie domain of the larger Paleoproterozoic Trans-Hudson orogen. Mineralization is focused within shear zones, including the Santoy shear system that extends south onto the Fisher property. The role of ore-adjacent intrusions, systematics of gold mineralization, and relationship between the mineralization of the properties are largely undefined. In this study, hydrothermally-altered samples from locations along the Santoy shear system, namely the Santoy 7, Santoy Gap, and the Fisher property, were analyzed to identify and compare the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics related to sulfide-gold mineralization and associated alteration. The altered host rocks primarily comprise upper greenschist to lower amphibolite-grade sheared metabasalt to chlorite-hornblende-biotite ± garnet schist, and intrusive rocks dominated by granodiorite and tonalite. These lithologies are cut by similar quartz vein generations and are associated with similar alteration assemblages and mineralization, including (i) syn -late-D 3 "distal" (∼0.4 to 3 m wide) sericite-biotite-chlorite-clinozoisite ± albite, titanite to vein-adjacent coarse-grained diopside-K-feldspar-albite-actinolite ± apatite, titanite calc-silicate alteration, associated with main-stage Py 2a, 2b -Cpy 2 -Po 1 -Au (syn -late-D 3) mineralization; (ii) remobilized, fracture-filling Py 3 -Po 2- Cpy 3 -Au-BiTel (late-D 3) mineralization within the calc-silicate assemblage; and (iii) early colloform Py 1a (pre- syn -D 3) and intrusion-hosted, inclusion-rich Py 1b (pre-D 3). Microprobe analyses reveal similar mineralogical trends between Fisher and Santoy alteration minerals typical of orogenic gold systems. Empirical geothermobarometric calculations of gold-associated vein-adjacent and vein-hosted chlorite and biotite exhibit orogenic-style formation conditions (∼320–330 °C, 3 kbar, ∼9 km depth). As such, these analyses suggest that the Fisher property and Santoy Mine Complex underwent inter-connected, multi-stage hydrothermal processes. These stages comprise (i) a potential early introduction of gold into the system closer to the timing of plutonism (Py 1b magmatic-hydrothermal; pre-D 1) or during the onset of gold mineralization (Py 1a ; orogenic; late-D 2 to early- syn -D 3) during the evolution of the Reindeer zone; (ii) orogenic main-stage mineralization (syn -late-D 3) concurrent with late- to post- collisional deformation throughout the Reindeer zone; and (iii) remobilization during continuous deformation (late-D 3) where elevated cyclical fluid fluxes and higher fracture density at Santoy produced higher-grade mineralization. Understanding the controls on the spatial distribution of mineral deposits is crucial for prospecting new occurrences. Various geological processes operate together at microscopic to macroscopic scales, generating mineral systems responsible for significant accumulations of economic minerals. This characteristic of functioning at various scales, accompanied by repetition of features over space during mineralization, indicates that these processes are self-similar, meaning they exhibit fractal geometry. Previous research has demonstrated that the combined action of processes involved in mineralization in such critical, nonlinear systems, produces objects with multifractal characteristics. Therefore, the spatial distribution of mineral deposits should be studied using appropriate methods for better understanding of their controls. In this context, this study investigated the multiscale geometric characteristics of worldclass orogenic gold systems in Archean greenstone belts using fractal and multifractal analyses. First, at the macroscopic-scale, regional-scale features were considered in the major greenstone belt provinces with orogenic gold deposits worldwide, namely: Abitibi (Canada), Norseman–Wiluna (Australia), Rio das Velhas (Brazil), and Central Lapland (Finland). Next, at an intermediate scale, local-scale features were examined in detail within the context of the Córrego do Sítio Lineament. Finally, at the microscopic scale, the focus was on the Córrego do Sítio orogenic gold deposit—a key deposit in the Rio das Velhas greenstone belt. Fractal dimensions of the spatial distributions of mineral deposits, magnetic lineaments, and their intersections were investigated at the macroscopic to local scales, as well as the spatial distribution of ore minerals at the microscopic scale, using the box-counting method. Maps of fractal dimensions of magnetic lineaments were generated and compared with the spatial distribution and tonnage of orogenic gold deposits at the regional scale. The same features were analyzed using the method of multifractal moments. The results at the three scales were analyzed and synthesized to identify meaningful patterns for understanding these orogenic gold systems. With regard to fractality, the orogenic gold deposits in all the investigated provinces exhibited unique spatial distributions at different scales, namely: less than 2–4 km, from 2 to 4 km to 10–30 km, and more than 10–30 km. The analysis of magnetic lineaments yielded a correlation between gradients of fractal dimensions and gold tonnages in the orogenic gold deposits. The multifractal analyses indicate multifractal geometries extending from the microscopic to the macroscopic scale. The calculated multifractal indices of Δα (singularity variation), τ"(1) (multifractality index), and Δf(α) (multifractal spectrum variation) showed direct relationships with endowment of orogenic gold in the studied provinces, as well as with differences in mineralization styles in thin sections. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the analyses used for improved characterization of the studied mineral systems; they also allow comparing similar systems at different scales and locations and they can be used to study other mineral systems with similar geological controls. • CLGB is the most prospective area for orogenic gold in northern Finland. • The scalability of the prospectivity modeling is demonstrated. • The stepwise technique effectively focuses the exploration into smaller areas. • The stepwise technique is recommended for exploration workflow. One of the key objectives for mineral exploration is to map the most prospective areas for the selected deposit type at a regional scale, subsequently narrowing these down to camp size target areas and finally to individual prospects that can be developed into economic mines. Exploration targeting, at all scales, is constrained by conceptual mineral system models and requires the integration and interpretation of a variety of geophysical, geological and geochemical data. Geographic information system (GIS) applications are commonly used to integrate spatially referenced data sets to produce mineral prospectivity maps in support of the mineral exploration targeting process. A knowledge-driven fuzzy logic method is used in this work for data integration and prospectivity modelling for orogenic gold deposits in northern Finland. The modelling workflow is done in a stepwise manner at three scales. Each step simulates the successive stage used in mineral exploration from selecting the most prospective belt scale domain to the camp size target area and individual prospects. New, higher resolution data sets are added at each stage as is typically the case in mineral exploration. Northern Finland was selected as the test area due to the regional scale coverage of publicly available geoscientific data and its proven orogenic gold potential. The regional scale prospectivity map outlines the central part of the Paleoproterozoic Central Lapland Greenstone belt (CLGB) as the most prospective area for orogenic gold in northern Finland. The belt scale model of the CLGB improves the resolution mapping of several camp sized high prospectivity target areas. The camp scale model of one of these, a past producing mining camp, further narrows down the high prospectivity zones into prospect size targets. Three models have score Area Under Curve (AUC) values between 0.839 and 0.930 from the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) method validation technique, indicating that the models are robust. The stepwise approach presented confirms that prospectivity mapping using the knowledge-driven fuzzy logic method is a scalable, flexible and relatively fast method which can be used for decision making at different stages of the exploration targeting process. Adding new data and rerunning the prospectivity model with the new data is fast and easy. The most important conclusion from the study is that remodelling individual regional and camp scale domains separately is highly recommended for mapping the most prospective target areas even if the data sets used are the same. • Gold is associated with a regional shear zone in a Rhyacian greenstone belt. • Gold is associated with quartz veins, calc-silicate alteration and albitization. • Gold precipitated at the late stages of alteration, close to magnetite and tellurides. • Our results suggests an ore-forming fluid sourced by oxidized magmas. At the Archean-Paleoproterozoic Troia Massif, NE Brazil, two major Paleoproterozoic greenstone belts are documented (Algodões and Serra das Pipocas). They share similar lithostratigraphic characteristics with other 2.2–2.1 Ga greenstone belts of the surrounding cratonic domains (e.g. Guiana shield and West Africa craton). Gold mineralization in the Serra das Pipocas greenstone belt is associated with a regional NE-trending shear zone. In the mineralized area (the Pedra Branca gold deposit) the main gold mineralization is found in association with quartz veins, calc–silicate alteration (e.g. diopside, K-feldspar, amphibole, titanite, biotite, pyrite, albite, magnetite ± carbonates) and albitization. Pyrrhotite is commonly found as inclusions in pyrite, and late magnetite replaces pyrite, suggesting progressive oxidation of the ore–forming fluid. Free-milling gold commonly precipitates at the late stages of alteration, in close association with magnetite and tellurides. The main tellurides found are hessite, altaite, sylvanite, calaverite and tellurobismuthite. Two fluid inclusion assemblages were identified from mineralized quartz veins. Assemblage 1 is characterized by pseudo-secondary trails that show the coexistence of CO 2 –rich and low salinity (0–8 wt% NaCl equiv.) CO 2 –H 2 O–NaCl and H 2 O–NaCl inclusions, suggesting formation during phase separation (fluid immiscibility). Assemblage 2 is represented by late secondary low–temperature (Th < 200 °C) H 2 O–NaCl inclusions, probably unrelated to gold mineralization. The δ18O, δD and δ13C values of hydrothermal minerals (quartz, calcite, biotite, hornblende and magnetite) and fluid inclusions are compatible with a magmatic–hydrothermal ore-forming fluid that underwent fluid–rock interaction with the greenstone sequence. The calculated fluid δ18O values range from +8.3 to +11.0‰ (n = 59), fluid δD from −98 to –32‰ (n = 24) and δ13C values of calcite from −6.35 to −9.40‰ (n = 3). Oxygen isotope thermometry for quartz–magnetite pairs yields temperatures from 467 to 526 °C (n = 7, average 503 °C). This probably represents the temperature of gold deposition, because gold is generally associated with magnetite in the ore mineral assemblage. The estimated PT conditions of the gold mineralization range from 467 °C and 1.93 kbar (7 km) to 526 °C and 3.48 kbar (13 km), repectively, and they were obtained from the intersection of isochores with the temperature range derived from the quartz–magnetite isotope geothermometer. This PT range is akin to hypozonal orogenic gold deposits. The association of gold with magnetite and tellurides implies an ore–forming fluid derived from oxidized magmas, similar to those interpreted as 'orogenic oxidized intrusion-related gold deposits' in other Precambrian greenstone belts (e.g. Abitibi and Eastern Goldfields). Abstract The 2.1-Ga-old Paleoproterozoic Dhanjori Group of rocks covers 800 sq. km area within the Singhbhum Crustal province of eastern India, and is composed of siliciclastic metasedimentary sequence interlayered with mafic to ultramafic rocks. The meta-volcanosedimentary sequence is deformed and is of low-grade greenschist metamorphic facies. The gold occurrences within the study area are confined to the sulphide hosted mafic/ultramafic volcanic rocks and also in the basal quartz pebble conglomerates (QPC) within the Dhanjori Formation. Gold mineralization within the mafic/ultramafic meta-volcanics formations occurs within the quartz ± carbonate vein i.e. lode gold and as detrital gold within the QPC (0.5−7 ppm) of Phuljhari Formations. Regional Audio Magnetotelluric (AMT) measurements across the geological domains of Dhanjori Group and Iron Ore Group (IOG) were carried out in the frequency range of 10 kHz–10 Hz. This work discusses the conductivity model from 3-D inversion along with geology and petrophysical properties in mapping the regional geological features, associated sulphide mineralization and influence of texture, grain and bulk properties on mineralization. Dimensionality and strike analysis of the AMT data indicate complex conductivity structures. 3-D inversion of off-diagonal component of impedance was performed for obtaining an optimum value of uniform half space initial resistivity and error floor for off-diagonal component of impedance data. These were used to perform 3-D inversion of full impedance to produce a conductivity model of the study area. The conductivity model delineated major geological boundaries and the sulphide bearing mineralized zone. A major conductor is observed which extends to a depth of ∼250 m within meta-volcanics. On comparison with the available borehole adjacent to this, it is confirmed that the conductor corresponds to sulphide mineralization. The resistivity low at a depth of 150 m coincides with metabasalts (pyrite present which extends to 159 m with arsenopyrite). Another mineralized zone is observed at the boundary of iron ore group volcanics and Proterozoic-gabbro-anorthosite-ultramafics (PGAU), it starts appearing from a depth of ∼400 m and can be seen which extends to a depth of ∼800 m. It is worth mentioning that there lies Kundarkocha gold mine in the same geological domain. In addition, near surface conductor to a maximum depth of ∼50 m is observed all along the AMT profile. The sediments and fluids could account for this conducting feature. This is in agreement with available Electrical Resistivity Tomography section. The borehole within Dhanjori Volcanics also detected sulphide mineralization for ∼50 m. Thus, it can be inferred that the near surface conductor indicates the presence of gold in association with other sulphide minerals. The petrophysical studies helped to estimate the concentration of minerals within the rocks. High density and low susceptibilities in the area is an indicative of low-grade metamorphism and low level of serpentenization. Combined density and susceptibility scatter diagram and component proportion phase diagram suggests 20 vol%, 78 vol% and 2 vol% of haematite/sulphides, barren rocks and magnetite respectively. The high value of chargeability and negligible value of susceptibility indicates the presence of disseminated sulphides rather than haematites and/or massive sulphides in the rocks. Ternary plot suggest that the mineralization is controlled by texture and grain properties. Petrophysical analysis suggests that the lithotypes of the study area are similar to those of greenstone terrain in the Abitibi Subprovince. Integrating inverted section, geology and petrophysical properties has a substantial impact on the study area in terms of predicting the mineralization prospect and at the same time substantially reduces the drilling cost. Abstract The Moeda Formation is the basal unit of the Minas Supergroup in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Brazil, and has quartz-pebble metaconglomerate that hosts Au–U mineralization, commonly assumed to be detrital in origin. The Au–U mineralization occurs immediately above an unconformity with the underlying Archean Rio das Velhas greenstone sequence. In this work, we focus on the Moeda metaconglomerate in its U-bearing portions in the Gandarela syncline: the southern sector, near the syncline axis; and the western limb, near the Palmital gold deposit. The metaconglomerate has mica seams that host zircon, xenotime, rutile, nodules of organic matter and sulfide minerals. The sulfide assemblage includes four generations of pyrite along with Fe–Ni–Cu–Co–Zn–Pb–Mo sulfides. A Sb–As sulfosalt assemblage of gersdorffite, stibnite and ullmannite is late in relation to pyrite and other sulfides. Gold is argentiferous with minor Hg. Uranium minerals include uraninite, coffinite, brannerite and uranyl arsenates. An early generation of uraninite and brannerite occurs as inclusions in organic-matter nodules, mainly in the southern sector. A late generation of uraninite formed due to a low-temperature hydrothermal overprint. Coffinite and late-stage brannerite are products of hydrothermal alteration of zircon and rutile, respectively. Uranyl arsenates have Ni as the prevalent cation; they formed as replacement of arsenic minerals, such as gersdorffite, by oxidized fluids containing U. Microstructural data and mineral chemistry favor a hydrothermal hypothesis analogous to an unconformity-related setting, rather than a detrital, placer-deposit model for the occurrence of U in the Moeda metaconglomerate. Abstract Pure marine chemical sediments, such as banded iron formations (BIF), are excellent archives of ancient seawater and may also provide constraints on the coeval hydrosphere-atmosphere system. However, on the bases of interpreted depositional settings, it has long been argued that Algoma type BIF merely recorded the intrabasinal volcanic or hydrothermal conditions. Here we couple systematic major and trace elements data with samarium (Sm)-neodymium (Nd) isotopic analyses of ∼2.56 Ga old Algoma type BIFs and associated schists from different stratigraphic horizons of the Qingyuan greenstone belt (QGB) in the North China Craton (NCC) to characterize the source and depositional environment over a short period (∼30 Ma). Meanwhile, we also compare our results with data for other Archean to Paleoproterozoic Superior- and Algoma-type BIFs, especially those near-contemporaneous counterparts in the NCC, to further evaluate the reliability of QGB BIFs as proxies for the Neoarchean seawater. Low Al 2 O 3 (<1.0 wt%) and high field strength elements (HFSE; e.g., Zr, Hf, and Th) contents (<1 ppm) for most BIF samples indicate an essentially detritus-free depositional environment. Shale-normalized rare earth elements and yttrium (REE + Y) patterns of these chemically pure BIF samples display features characteristic of modern seawater, with positive La anomalies, superchondritic Y/Ho ratios, and HREE enrichment relative to LREE. The presence of distinctly positive Eu anomalies indicates a significant high-T hydrothermal input, while the slightly wide range of Eu/Sm ratios likely imply plausible contributions from low-T hydrothermal fluids or changing intensities of hydrothermal activity. Moreover, similar to other Neoarchean Algoma type BIFs in the NCC (e.g., the Anshan-Benxi and the eastern Hebei BIFs), the absence of negative Ce anomalies in combination with the narrow range of Pr/Yb SN ratios for all samples suggest that water columns from which these BIFs deposited were anoxic. The initial ε Nd values of the purest BIF samples (the most reliable archives for the Neoarchean QGB seawater) range between +0.8 and +3.6, lower than those of associated schists (+3.6 to +3.8) and coeval basalts (+2.8 to +4.3), indicating the existence of isotopically enriched or less depleted protocrustal landmasses (characterized by negative or obviously lower ε Nd values) which contributed materials to ambient seawater in the QGB basin. Significantly, the large similarity in depositional environment for all the Algoma type BIFs in the NCC, as well as the relatively consistent REY patterns for both Algoma and Superior types BIFs of Archean to Paleoproterozoic ages suggest that the QGB BIFs can be used reliably as Neoarchean seawater proxies. Abstract The Hope reef forms part of a number of high-grade mineralized, but hitherto undocumented auriferous shear zones at Fairview Mine in the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa, collectively referred to as the hanging-wall reefs. The reefs are hosted by steeply-dipping greywacke units of the Fig Tree Group on the western limb of the regional-scale Ulundi syncline. The currently mined shallow Hope reef represents a top-to-the northwest, low-angle thrust that formed as a secondary accommodation structure during continued NW subhorizontal shortening after the lock up of the Ulundi syncline. Northwest shortening strains correspond to the main phase of upright regional folding (D 2/3) in the greenstone belt. The formation of shear and extensional vein sets documents fault-valve behaviour along the low-angle thrust, driven by close-to-lithostatic fluid pressures and under very low differential stresses (<5 Mpa). High-grade ore shoots in the plane of the shallow reef delineate lithologically and structurally controlled interconnected fault-fracture meshes. Bedding planes in Fig Tree greywacke units have provided suitably orientated anisotropies that promoted the development of a wider, anastomosing shear-zone system. The shear zones envelop lithons of relatively competent greywacke units. Slip transfer from shears into the competent lithons induced extensional and shear fractures and the formation of an interconnected fracture network in and between lithons recording a net dilation of up to 50-60 vol%. Individual lithons show extents of 20–25 m2, but ore shoots defined by imbricated lithons cover areas of several hundred square metres. Mutually cross-cutting extensional veins sets and local domains of normal slip point to transient stress switches related to periods of post-slip relaxation and rapid fluid pressure build up prior to the restoration of horizontal stresses and reverse slip along the shallowly dipping reef. The hanging-wall reefs at Fairview Mine underline the formation of mineralized reefs in the Barberton gold district with vastly different orientations, structural and lithological controls, either in sequence or broadly contemporaneous, but during the late-stage shortening of the greenstone belt. Abstract São Sebastião is a recently discovered Archean gold deposit at the northwesternmost part of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF), southern São Francisco craton, Brazil. The gold ore is strata-confined in two levels of banded iron formation (BIF) of the basal stratigraphic unit in the Pitangui greenstone belt (2.8 Ga). Pitangui is correlated to the widely known Rio das Velhas greenstone belt, which hosts several orogenic gold deposits such as the world-class Cuiabá. The gold mineralization at São Sebastião is associated to replacement-style sulfidation over magnetite, where the main developed phases are: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrite and arsenian-pyrite. Native Au occurs as inclusions in pyrrhotite formed at dilatation domains (e.g., breccias, fold hinges) during compressional events (Rio das Velhas Orogeny at 2.8–2.75 Ga), but mainly as inclusions in late- to post-kinematic pyrite and arsenopyrite, as fracture infills in arsenopyrite and in contact with gangue minerals. Electron-microprobe analyses in arsenopyrite reveal a 465–560 °C precipitation temperature interpreted from As atomic percentage and indicate that high-temperature fluids were active after the deformational event. The temperature increase caused the incorporation of LA-ICP-MS-detected lattice-bound Ni and Co in arsenian-pyrite and arsenopyrite, related to the mafic-ultramafic signature of boundary rocks. High temperature conditions are supported by pyrite and ISS (intermediate-solid solution in the Cu-Fe-S system) formation at 600 °C and melting-derived textures resulting from the precipitation of Bi- and As-melts, typical of amphibolite-facies environments with high f S 2. Whole-rock geochemical assays of drill core samples display two clear trends on Ag, Bi, Cu vs. Au binary plots and on principal component analysis results. The trends are a product of the heterogeneous spatial distribution of melts and high-temperature fluids. Melting features and superposition of mineralization styles are common in hypozonal gold deposits experiencing higher heat influx. At São Sebastião, the thermal effect is likely related to the 2.7 Ga granitic intrusions that surround the Pitangui belt. São Sebastião shows distinct characteristics than those described for the mesozonal gold deposits in the Rio das Velhas greenstone belt and may depict the deeper roots of the QF gold system. Abstract The Central Lapland Greenstone Belt (CLGB) is well endowed with orogenic gold deposits along major shear zones and structural lineaments. In the northern part of the belt, the Kiistala Shear Zone (KiSZ) hosts the Suurikuusikko gold deposit (Kittilä Mine), currently the largest gold producer in Europe. The Iso-Kuotko deposit is located 10 km to the north of Suurikuusikko along the same shear zone. Gold mineralization at Iso-Kuotko formed in two major stages: an early stage refractory gold mineralization with auriferous arsenopyrite with similarities to the ore at Suurikuusikko and a late, main stage mineralization with free gold in carbonate-quartz veins with abundant pyrrhotite, native bismuth and other sulphide minerals. This latter ore is absent at Suurikuusikko. Based on U-Pb dating, as well as Re-Os and Pb-isotope systematics of rock-forming and hydrothermal minerals, we evaluate the relationships between tectonic evolution and formation of gold deposits throughout the late Palaeoproterozoic in the northern part of the CLGB. Results from in situ U-Pb dating of zircon and petrographically well constrained hydrothermal monazite and xenotime by LA-ICPMS, and model age calculations using Re-Os isotopic data for arsenopyrite and in situ Pb-isotope data for galena from the Iso-Kuotko deposit provide evidence for multiple episodes of hydrothermal activity along the KiSZ. Data suggest coincident felsic magmatism and structurally controlled fluid flow events during wrench fault-dominated N-S shearing associated with early, micro-continent accretion ushering in the Svecofennian orogeny. This includes the formation of refractory gold ores at Suurikuusikko (1916 ± 19 Ma) and Iso-Kuotko (>1868 ± 15 Ma). Subordinate barren veining took place at ∼1830 Ma during transient extension between the accretion and final collision stage. Xenotime in late stage veins with visible gold at Iso-Kuotko yield U-Pb ages between 1761 ± 9 and 1770 ± 7 Ma. This time-interval is concurrent with widespread granitoid emplacement at the close of the Svecofennian orogeny. Disturbance of the Re-Os system in the early auriferous arsenopyrite can be connected to the late stage mineralizing processes. Pb isotope data suggest a mixed mantle and lower crust origin for fluids in the post-orogenic hydrothermal system. In situ U-Pb dating in polished thin sections in tandem with electron microprobe analyses of mineral compositions and detailed textural observations, highlights the utility of xenotime and monazite as robust geochronometers capable of recording repeated hydrothermal events in Paleoproterozoic orogenic systems. The giant Karagba-Chauffeur-Durba (KCD) gold deposit and its peripheral gold satellite deposits are located within the Kibali gold district in the Neoarchaean Moto Greenstone Belt in the northeast of the Congo Craton, Democratic Republic of Congo. The gold mineralisation within the KCD area occurs within altered chemical sedimentary rocks such as banded iron formation (BIF) and chert, as well as in meta -carbonaceous argillite, meta -sandstones and poorly-sorted pebble meta -conglomerates. To elucidate and characterise the controls on gold mineralisation in the siliciclastic rocks of this sedimentary sequence dating from approximately 2630 to 2625 Ma, the present study critically considers an extensive data set comprising borehole logs, petrographic observations, gold assay data, and mineral chemistry. Detailed high magnification petrographic analyses of polished sections enabled evaluation of 3824 gold grains from meta -conglomerate and siliciclastic sedimentary host rock specimens. These were compared to an additional 985 gold grains from deformed quartz-carbonate (ACSA) altered rocks and BIF host rock types, representing end-members for a purely hydrothermal style of gold mineralisation. These analyses revealed that most of the gold grains in the meta -conglomerates occur within the gangue mineral assemblage in the form of free gold generally distal to any sulphide minerals, with a second population associated with the sulphides, mainly pyrite, followed by arsenopyrite and lesser pyrrhotite. The gold grains in the meta -conglomerates show larger average sizes (433 µm2) than in the grains in the ACSA (311 µm2) and BIF (180 µm2) host rock types. A large dataset of assayed gold results of 9,632,470 data from 3953 drill holes highlights that the ACSA-altered rocks and the chemical sedimentary rocks (chert and BIF) are the main hosts for gold, showing average grades of 3.9, 2.5 and 2.4 g/t when a 0.5 g/t cut-off is applied, respectively. Conversely, meta -conglomerates have a relatively low Au content (1.84 g/t), yet this dataset has an extensive set of outlying values, with 86 data points reflecting grades over 100 g/t. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM-EDS/WDS) performed on 397 gold grains from meta -conglomerates and deformed quartz-carbonate (ACSA) altered rocks shows mainly Au-Ag alloys, dominated by native gold with averages of 85.46 wt% of Au and 9.76 wt% of Ag in the meta -conglomerates and 86.56 wt% of Au and 12.84 wt% of Ag within the ACSA. Minor amounts of Au-Ag alloys electrum and Au-Hg-Ag alloys amalgams are present predominantly at Gorumbwa and KCD deposits. Our analysis of textural features, mineral chemistry, morphology, assay results, and mineral associations suggests that there are significant differences between the purely hydrothermal mineralisation and the mineralisation hosted by the meta -conglomeratic units. We suggest that the pre-enrichment of these meta -conglomerates by placer processes has played a role in enhancing the fertility for gold mineralisation in the KCD area. This has far-reaching implications for the existing ore-genesis models and exploration paradigms employed in the KCD area. This work presents new opportunities for exploration by highlighting the significance of understanding the stratigraphy and identifying sub-basins that may have undergone early placer enrichments. This paper uses the random forest (RF) algorithm to produce two maps of orogenic gold prospectivity (MPM) across the entire Superior geologic province of Ontario and Quebec, Canada. One MPM of this entire study area is based on a compilation of mapped faults while the other is based on a manual interpretation of lineaments from airborne magnetic data. In addition, we have created four MPMs over the Abitibi region as the MPM map of the entire Superior is characterized by a mapping bias due to more intense mapping of faults over the Abitibi portion of the study area with respect to the rest of the Superior province. There are three RF maps generated over the Abitibi region based on faults, fault density and fault intersection density, faults + magnetic data and faults + gravity + magnetic data. To reduce the effect of the fault mapping bias, we developed a fourth map based on a knowledge driven (weighted sum technique). Statistically the best MPM is based on the faults, gravity and magnetic data. The major predictors of gold are NW-SE, NE-SW, EW trending faults, fault intersection density between EW and NW trending faults and to a lesser extent fault density and a magnetic vertical gradient image. In addition, we compare two greenstone belts in three dimensions with respect to their potential for gold exploration. We conclude that the Larder Lake greenstone belt is more fertile with respect to gold mineralization than the Swayze greenstone belt due to deeper penetrating faults which have greater potential for tapping gold mineralized fluid from the mantle or lower crust. Our final MPM map has identified prospective areas that contain known gold mines as well as areas that do not contain any known gold mines. The Sandstone Greenstone Belt is an exploration-immature, regolith-covered, approximately 1000 sq. km belt, in the Southern Cross Domain of the Yilgarn Craton. In order to estimate potential endowment, historical gold production and deposit resource estimates are required to be quantitatively analysed for calculation of natural and residual gold endowment. The total residual gold endowment within the oxide zone of the Sandstone Greenstone Belt is estimated, by application of a Zipf’s law statistical assessment, to be 2.3 Moz. This mineralisation is most likely contained in extensions of known deposits and several undiscovered deposits. The fresh rock of the Sandstone Greenstone Belt remains poorly explored. However, a conceptual endowment estimate can be made, based on a minerals system comparison between the exploration-immature Sandstone Greenstone Belt and the well-explored, geologically-similar Agnew Greenstone Belt, 100 km to the east. It is possible that natural endowment at Sandstone could total 21.3 Moz, with nine undiscovered deposits of >0.5 Moz. Application of such a minerals-system integrated endowment assessment represents an effective motivator to embark on a well-resourced gold exploration campaign in the Sandstone Greenstone Belt, a currently immature exploration search space. The Mana district, located in the northern part of the Birimian Houndé greenstone belt in western Burkina Faso, is a world-class Paleoproterozoic orogenic gold district (∼8 Moz) including five gold deposits (Fofina, Nyafé, Siou, Wona-Kona and Yaho). These deposits are located in specific lithostratigraphic domains, and gold is controlled by various structural features. Deposit- and regional-scale mapping, intrusion age and geochemistry, as well as airborne aeromagnetic and electrical resistivity geophysical data, were used to decipher the tectonic evolution of each gold deposit and the district. Five deformational and four gold mineralizing events were recognized. The first deformation event (D1 MD : E-W oriented shortening) affected the metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Lower Birimian group. This early deformation episode was correlated with the formation of gently N-plunging folds (F 1MD ) and N-S-striking thrusts faults coeval with emplacement of the pre- to synkinematic Wona-Kona and Siou plutons dated at ∼2172 Ma, under greenschist facies metamorphism. The quartz-carbonate veins (V 1MD ) at Fofina and Siou formed during D1 MD at Eoeburnean time, manifesting the first gold event at approximately ∼2172 Ma. The following deformation event (D2 MD : E-W oriented extension) is associated with the deposition of the Upper Birimian group (Mana basin) overlying the Lower Birimian group. The geometry of the Mana basin is controlled by the Mana and Maoula shear zones. The Tarkwaian-type rock formation overlying the Upper Birimian group, controlled by the Wona-Kona and Siou shear zones, is constrained at the end of D2 MD or at the beginning of the D3 MD event with a maximum deposition age at ∼2113 Ma. The third deformation event (D3 MD : E-W to WNW-ESE transpression) affected the entire supracrustal rock. Such event is correlated with the formation of map-scale F 3MD folds and dextral shear zones during the Eburnean orogeny (∼2113–2090 Ma). A second gold mineralizing event occurred during D3 MD and is manifested by quartz-carbonate veins (V 3MD ) and disseminated sulfides at the Yaho, Fofina and Nyafé and possibly Wona-Kona deposits. The fourth deformation event (D4 MD : NNW-SSE transpression) is correlated with sinistral shearing along the major transcurrent faults and the development of asymmetric NNE-striking folds (F 4MD ) associated with vertical fold axes. Syn-D4 MD mineralization is characterized mainly by a strong silicification (Si 4MD ) with disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite along the Wona-Kona shear zone and by tiny quartz-carbonate veinlets (V 4MD ). This event is considered the main gold-bearing event in the western margin of the Mana district. The fifth and last deformation event (D5 MD ) is brittle in character and was responsible for the formation of E-W subvertical crenulation cleavages and reverse faults under overall N-S shortening. This late deformation event is tentatively associated with a last gold event recorded as free gold associated with muscovite in brittle fractures developed in competent orebodies at the Wona-Kona and Siou deposits. This event could be as young as ∼2022 Ma, the age obtained from Ar-Ar datation of muscovite-schists at the Wona-Kona deposit. Our main contribution is that we decipher multiple gold mineralizing events at the district scale based on deposit- and regional-scale mapping. It is interpreted that gold was introduced as early as ∼2172 Ma and possibly as late as ∼2022 Ma during at least 3 or even 4 shortening tectonic events in a timeframe not yet recognized at the district scale for all the Birimian belts. The world-class Geita Hill deposit is one of the largest gold deposits located within the Geita Greenstone Belt in NW Tanzania. The deposit is hosted within a complexly deformed sedimentary package dominated by ironstone and intruded by diorite dykes. The gold mineralisation is spatially associated with the Geita Hill Shear Zone which, is a NE-trending, moderately NW dipping deformation zone consisting of a network of discontinuous shear fractures that record early thrusting overprinted by later strike-slip and normal events. The regional metamorphic assemblage in the meta-sediments is characterised by biotite + chlorite + actinolite + K-feldspar + magnetite ± pyrrhotite ± pyrite indicating upper greenschist facies conditions. The gold-related alteration overprints the regional metamorphic assemblage, and is characterised by silicification and sulfidation fronts that generally extend out from the mineralised zone by no more than one meter. The alteration assemblage includes sub-vertical, mineralised quartz veins that trend approximately E-W. The mineralised quartz veins are accompanied by alteration halos of quartz + biotite + K-feldspar + pyrite which overprints the peak metamorphic assemblage. Gold is closely associated with secondary pyrite and occurs as free gold and gold tellurides (sylvanite, calaverite and nagyagite). It occurs mainly as inclusions in pyrite and as invisible gold in pyrite but also as gold inclusions in biotite and along quartz grain boundaries. Two distinct textural styles of auriferous pyrite can be distinguished: inclusion rich subhedral pyrite, hosting invisible gold, and inclusion free euhedral pyrite, hosting visible gold grains. It is common for the inclusions rich pyrite to have thick rims of inclusion free pyrite. The mineralising alteration is overprinted by barren, multiphase quartz-carbonate, and carbonate-chlorite veins. This alteration is characterised by the assemblage calcite + siderite + chlorite ± quartz ± pyrite ± barite. Palaeostress analysis of mineralised shear fractures along the Geita Hill Shear Zone are indicative of sigma 1 being vertical and sigma 3 trending N-S, indicating N-S extension, which is consistent with the orientation of the mineralised quartz veins. [Display omitted] • The Bajiazi deposit is a Late Triassic mesothermal lode gold deposit. • The ore fluids were mainly magmatic in origin and had a CO 2 –H 2 O–NaCl composition. • Metals in the ores were derived from the lower crust with a minor mantle contribution. • Fluid immiscibility was the key mechanism of gold deposition. The Bajiazi gold deposit, located in the northeast of the North China Craton, is a typical representative of the Jiapigou ore cluster in northeast China. The deposit is hosted within the Neoarchean–Paleoproterozoic supracrustal rocks (greenstone belts) and metamorphosed plutonic rocks. The orebodies occur along NE-trending ductile–brittle faults as auriferous quartz veins. The mineral assemblages reveal three stages of mineralization: quartz–pyrite (early), quartz–polymetallic sulfide (main), and quartz–carbonate (late). Three types of primary fluid inclusions (FIs), namely A-type (aqueous), C-type (aqueous–carbonic), and PC-type (pure carbonic) FIs, have been distinguished in different stages of quartz. The early- and main-stage quartz grains contain C-, A-, and a few PC-type FIs, while the late-stage quartz grains contain only A-type FIs. The early-, main-, and late-stage FIs homogenized at temperatures of 288–397 °C, 183–281 °C, and 120–190 °C, corresponding to salinities of 8.8–19.5, 3.9–18.8, and 3.2–11.3 wt% NaCl eqv., respectively. The ore fluid system evolved from H 2 O–NaCl–CO 2 to H 2 O–NaCl during ore formation. The gold precipitation resulted from fluid immiscibility during the main mineralization stage. The H O isotope data reveal that the ore fluids originally came from magmatic water, and mixed with meteoric water during ore formation. The δ34S values (−0.2 ‰ to 8.3 ‰) of ore-related sulfides suggest that the sulfur in the ores was originally magmatic-sourced, and mixed with the sulfur in wall rocks during fluid migration. The Pb isotope ratios (206Pb/204Pb = 15.890–16.794, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.188–15.530, and 208Pb/204Pb = 36.589–37.710) of ore-related sulfides indicate the metals in the ores originated primarily from the lower crust, with a minor mantle contribution, and most likely came from a deep magmatic system. The Late Triassic gold mineralization has a clear genetic link to a quartz syenite porphyry. Based on the geological, FI, and isotopic constraints, the Bajiazi deposit is classified as a mesothermal lode gold deposit, which formed in an extensional setting after the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. The Jiapigou gold mineralization hosted in a Neoarchean granite-greenstone belt in the southern Jilin Province, at the easternmost part of the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC), is one of the important gold deposits in China. However, its evolution, in particular the initial Au source and enrichment, have not been well constrained. The initial gold enrichment defined by Au concentrations of Neoarchean unaltered gneisses of this region, range from < 0.005 ppm to 0.001 ppm, increasing to 0.006–0.031 ppm Au for the ore-hosting Neoarchean altered mylonite gneisses. A combined study of zircon trace element, U Pb dating, Hf isotope compositions, as well as whole rock chemical compositions was performed for dioritic gneisses from both ore-bearing (close to the ore body) and ore-barren zones (within the nearby rock body) with a view to constrain the gold initial enrichment. The dioritic gneisses have varied SiO 2 contents (54.19–61.34 wt.%), Al 2 O 3 (13.06–16.75 wt.%) with moderate to high K 2 O/Na 2 O ratios (0.7–1.3) and MgO (2.20–3.77%). Based on their chemical compositions, positive zircon ε Hf (t) values, and their formation ages of 2512 ± 9 Ma, we infer that these dioritic rocks were generated by partial melting of a juvenile source, most likely thickened mafic lower continental crust (LCC) with residual plagioclase associated with minor amphibole. The ore-bearing sample (H5) from a ductile shear zone has been extensively altered by fluids and is the sample containing zircons with blurred zoning and reverse discordance. Zircons from H5 have much higher radiogenic Pb but lower U and Pb contents than those in the ore-barren sample (H3), which contains zircons with oscillatory zoning and represents the basement rock. Based on the available petrological, geochronological and geochemical constraints, we propose the following model for Au initial enrichment within the Neoarchean granite-greenstone belt. At ca. 2.54 Ga, associated with the accretionary processes in the proto-NCC, subduction-related fluids infiltrated the metasomatised subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM), scavenging Au and Pb (mainly radiogenic Pb, henceforth Pb*) and triggering partial melting. The resulting basaltic magmas underplated the LCC and were re-melted at 2512 ± 9 Ma, when the onset of an extensional regime permitted the advection of heat and melts/fluids into the LCC. This generated voluminous dioritic magmas with juvenile Hf isotope signatures with little evidence of interaction with the mantle. Subsequent ca. 2505 Ma re-melting of some granodioritic rocks led to the formation of potassic granite and residual fluids further enriched in Au and Pb*, both focused into ductile shear zones and other lithospheric weak zones. The fluids with anomalous U Pb fractionation resulted in the rarely reported zircon reverse discordance, alteration and also enrichment in Au, as observed in sample H5 and H4, representing the initial stage of Au enrichment within the Neoarchean granite-greenstone belt. The world-class > 4 Moz Wona-Kona gold deposit is hosted within the Paleoproterozoic Birimian Houndé greenstone belt which is the most important gold mineralized belt in the western part of Burkina Faso, with a cumulative reserve of ~ 11 Moz. The mineralization consists of a pervasive silicification with disseminated pyrite–arsenopyrite crosscut by quartz–carbonate veinlets (1 to 10 cm wide) forming a vertical, thick (up to 40 m) and laterally extensive (5 km) northeast trending orebody hosted within a large (200 m wide) shear zone of regional extent. Gold occurs in association with 3 generations of pyrite and 2 generations of arsenopyrite. Free gold, interpreted as the last mineralizing event, occurs as late fracture filling in the pervasive silicification zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Nassara-Au prospect is located in the Birimian Boromo Greenstone Belt in southwestern Burkina Faso. It is part of a larger mineralized field that includes the Cu–Au porphyry system of Gaoua, to the north. At Nassara, mineralization occurs within the West Batié Shear Zone that follows the contact between volcanic rocks (basalt and andesite) and volcano-sediments (pyroclastics and black shales) at the southern termination of the Boromo Belt. Gold is associated with pyrite and other Fe-bearing minerals that occur disseminated within the sheared volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks. In particular, highest grades are distinguished in alteration halos of small quartz–albite–ankerite veins that form networks along the shear zone. Here, pyrites are marked by As-poor and As-rich growth zones, the latter containing gold inclusions. Gold mineralization formed during D2 NA . Subsequent shear fractures related to D3 NA related are devoid of gold. Nassara is a classical orogenic gold occurrence where gold is associated to disseminated pyrite along quartz veins. The fact that mineral deposit attributes such as the size frequency of orogenic gold deposits in specific provinces exhibit power law distributions similar to forest fires, earthquakes, and fault size populations, is a compelling motivation to examine their genesis from a systems context. Based on well-studied Earth systems such as climate, the systems related to mineral deposits are likely to be complex and potentially include sensitive dependent components that vary simultaneously and in subtly interconnected ways. Although a “systems approach” was enunciated for mineral exploration by Fyfe and Kerrich as early as 1976, it is yet to be fully embraced by the geosciences community that commonly retain models dependent primarily on deposit-scale characteristics. Orogenic gold deposits are well studied and widely considered to represent a single class of deposit that has formed over much of Earth history in settings ranging from Archean granite-greenstone belts to Phanerozoic turbidite sequences. Accordingly, the deposit type is well suited for assessment within a systems context. If orogenic gold deposits do in fact represent a single class of deposits, then the simplest application of a systems approach highlights the fact that the nature of the host upper crustal succession cannot be a fundamental control, with specific granite suites and pyritic sediments not universal, or at least not essential, components of the system. Furthermore the scale of orogenic gold systems implicates processes capable of tapping sub-crustal source regions. Increasingly, advances in orogenic gold systems, and mineral systems in general, are linked to application of systems science that emphasize importance of system-driven criticality. Orogenic gold systems and other mineral systems are typically short in duration and linked in time and space to tectonic triggers. The latter promote a rapid release of energy (‘avalanches’) that overcome system thresholds and are strong indicators of complex systems that may show power-law behavior. Only a rigorous application of a systems approach can cut through the confusion that arises from conflicting models based on local deposit studies. Only a systems approach can evaluate the significance of rare or anomalous features in a small number of deposits. The Tasiast gold deposits are hosted within Mesoarchean rocks of the Aouéouat greenstone belt, Mauritania. The Tasiast Mine consists of two deposits hosted within distinctly different rock types, both situated within the hanging wall of the west-vergent Tasiast thrust. The Piment deposits are hosted within metasedimentary rocks including metaturbidites and banded iron formation where the main mineral association consists of magnetite-quartz-pyrrhotite ± actinolite ± garnet ± biotite. Gold is associated with silica flooding and sulphide replacement of magnetite in the turbidites and in the banded iron formation units. The West Branch deposit is hosted within meta-igneous rocks, mainly diorites and quartz diorites that lie stratigraphically below host rocks of the Piment deposits. Most of the gold mineralisation at West Branch is hosted by quartz–carbonate veins within the sheared and hydrothermally altered meta-diorites that constitute the Greenschist Zone. At Tasiast, gold mineralisation has been defined over a strike length > 10 km and to vertical depths of 740 m. All of the significant mineralised bodies defined to date dip moderately to steeply (45° to 70°) to the east and have a south–southeasterly plunge. Gold deposits on the Tasiast trend are associated with second order shear zones that are splays cutting the hanging wall block of the Tasiast thrust. An age of 2839 ± 36 Ma obtained from the hydrothermal overgrowth on zircons from a quartz vein is interpreted to represent the age of mineralisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Inata gold deposit is hosted in the Bouroum greenstone belt of northern Burkina Faso and contains ca. 5 Moz of gold resource. The greenstone belt is divided into 4 distinct domains: The Pali West, Pali-Minfo and Fété Kolé domains comprised of variable proportions of mafic to intermediated volcanic, volcaniclastic and sedimentary rocks, and the Sona Basin comprised of feldspathic sandstones and turbidites. Potential Tarkwaian-like conglomerates are rarely observed on the eastern margin of the basin. The stratigraphy is crosscut by a series of intrusions between 2172 ± 15 Ma and 2122 ± 4 Ma. A complex deformation sequence is recorded in the rocks and has been interpreted in a five stage scheme: early syn-depositional basin margin faults reactivated through time and partitioning all subsequent regional deformation (De B ); N–S compression (D1 B > 2172 Ma); E-W compression (D2 B , < ca 2122 Ma); NW–SE compression (D3 B ), and a late N–S compression (D4 B ). D2 B -D4 B overprint all rocks, including those of the Sona Basin and Tarkwaian-like conglomerates. Peak metamorphism is mid- to upper-greenschist facies. Mineralisation at Inata is hosted in black shales and volcaniclastic rocks of the Pali-Minfo domain and comprises shear-zone hosted quartz-tourmaline-ankerite veins with associated sulphides dominated by pyrite and arsenopyrite. Three generations of pyrite (py1, py2, py3) and one generation of arsenopyrite (apy2) have been identified. Py1 is parallel to bedding and early D1 B foliation and not associated with gold. Py2 and apy2 are coeval, contain up to 1 ppm gold and are spatially associated with auriferous quartz veins. Py3 locally overprints previous assemblages and is also associated with Au. Fluid inclusions in quartz indicate H 2 O to H 2 O–CO 2 –NaCl fluids in auriferous quartz veins. Microscopic to macroscopic observation of fabric-mineral-vein crosscutting relationships indicate that mineralisation is syn-D2 B , disrupted and remobilised during D3 B . The Julie deposit is currently the largest gold prospect in NW Ghana. It is hosted in sheared granitoids of TTG composition of the Paleoproterozoic Julie greenstone belt. The main mineralization consists of a corridor of gold-bearing quartz veins forming a network of a few tens of metres in thickness, trending E–W and dipping 30–60° N, contained within the main shear zone that affects these rocks. The core of this vein corridor is altered by sericite, quartz, ankerite, calcite, tourmaline and pyrite, and is surrounded by an outer halo consisting of albite, sericite, calcite, chlorite, pyrite and rutile. A second set of veins, conjugate to the first set, occurs in the area. These veins have alteration halos with a similar mineralogy as the main corridor, however, their extent, as well as the size of the mineralization, is less important. In the main corridor, gold forms micron-sized grains that occur in pyrite as inclusions, on its edges, and in fractures crosscutting it. Silver, tellurium, bismuth, copper and lead commonly accompany the gold. Pyrite occurs disseminated in the veins and in the surrounding rocks. The Bagassi gold deposits are situated on the West African craton and hosted in Palaeoproterozoic rocks of the Houndé greenstone belt, southwest Burkina Faso. High-grade gold mineralisation is hosted in quartz–gold ± pyrite veins-lodes (V 1A ), in dilational zones and narrow shears in the Bagassi granitoid, and forms the majority of the resource–reserve portfolio in the Bagassi exploration permits, with gold grades of 18–21 g/t. Shear hosted gold-pyrite mineralisation in quartz veins in dilational jogs (V 1B ) occurs along narrow discontinuous shear zones that trend north-northwest in Birimian-aged metabasaltic units, and forms a secondary gold resource. Gold mineralisation is restricted to formation in the late Eburnean Orogeny and formed during a change from east-west to transcurrent compression and shearing. The Bagassi deposits demonstrate that granitoids emplaced prior to onset of the Eburnean Orogeny represent viable gold mineralisation in host rocks that are increasingly seen to be associated with significant gold resources. This contribution reports on three significant gold occurrences in southern Mali, the Syama and Tabakoroni deposits and the Tellem prospect, located in what is locally known as the Syama corridor. They are part of the Syama and Tabakoroni goldfields, which are the object of a twin paper in this issue (Ballo et al., this volume). They occur in the northern part of the Bagoe greenstone belt, which, in the study area, consists of a suite of Paleoproterozoic metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The sediments include conglomerate, black shale, sandstone and greywacke. The volcanic rocks have basaltic, andesitic and dacitic compositions. The basalts have flat rare earth element (REE) patterns, no Nb anomaly, and very low Zr/Y, whereas the latter two rock types are enriched in light REE, depleted in Nb, Ta and Zr/Y > 7. All rock units are crosscut by spessartite-type lamprophyre sills. Even though the three gold occurrences are aligned along the same major structure, each one has distinct geological features including (i) the nature of the dominant host rock in the mineralized zone (a basaltic volcanic sequence at Syama, a diorite pluton at Tellem and a felsic volcanic sequence at Tabakoroni); (ii) the structural characteristics of the zone (highly mineralized breccias for Syama and vein stockwork for Tabakoroni and Tellem); and (iii) the main sulfides present (pyrite in association with arsenopyrite at Tabakoroni and Tellem and pyrite alone at Syama). At Tabakoroni and Tellem, gold mineralization occurred mostly during D4 Sy , whereas at Syama, a large part of the visible gold occurs as infill in fractures in breccia zones, likely related to a brittle, late E–W phase of shortening (D5 Sy ). The West African Craton hosts major resources of gold, iron ore, aluminium ore, diamonds, phosphates and manganese. This portfolio of ore deposits is linked to the formation of Archean–Paleoproterozoic greenstone belts, Jurassic rifting and extended periods of Mesozoic to Cenozoic weathering and erosion. We give a brief overview of the temporal and spatial distribution patterns of West African ore deposits with emphasis on the main commodity types. The oldest ore forming processes generated major resources in iron ore and gold in the Kénéma–Man and Reguibat Shields during the Neo-Archean. The majority of gold, porphyry copper, lead–zinc and sedimentary manganese deposits formed during the Paleoproterozoic, dominantly within the Baoulé-Mossi domain. At the same time diamond-bearing kimberlites developed in Ghana. Another distinct diamond event has been recognized in the Mesozoic of the Kénéma–Man shield. Isolated occurrences of IOCG's as well as copper–gold and gold formed in Pan-African/Variscan belts. During the Neoproterozoic, the majority of mineralization consists of sedimentary iron ore and phosphate deposits located within intracratonic basins. Two mineral prospectivity maps (MPM) focusing on a general Au model for the Chibougamau region of Quebec, Canada, have been produced in this paper. The random forest algorithm has been used to integrate 35 evidence (predictor) layers which represent vectors to Au mineralization. The MPMs generated are robust as evidenced by efficiency of classification curves. The known zones of Au mineralization are well predicted; furthermore, new prospective areas with no known Au have been identified which are prime for exploration follow-up. The paper presents new geological and geochemical data on the Perseverance komatiite complex (PK) that hosts the Perseverance Ni-sulphide deposit and the volcanic and sedimentary rocks forming the footwall of the PK. Using the 3D reconstruction of the PK and its' footwall volcano-sedimentary succession the heterogeneity of the komatiite channel has been characterised on the basis of spatial distribution of the geochemical petrogenetic indicators. The study shows that the komatiite facies proximal to the mineralised bodies and the main pathway are expressed in the 3D models as the segments with anomalously high MgO concentrations coupled with low contents of Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 and CaO (Fig - abstract). The geochemical indicators of komatiite fertility, Ni/Cr and Ni/Ti ratios, are commonly in the range of 1 to 3 for Ni/Cr and 2 to 5 for Ni/Ti within the main pathway. The Ni/Cr exceeds 5 and Ni/Ti 20 in the mineralised parts of the channel. In the peripheral zone komatiites these values commonly drop to less than 1, corresponding to barren komatiites. Similarly large variations are exhibited by the ratios of mantle normalized Pt and Pd to Al and Ti over short distances from 1 to 25. Closely spaced high and low values of these ratios hinder their use for discriminating fertile from barren komatiites. However, within the komatiite main lava pathway they can be used as geochemical pathfinders for magmatic sulphides. Reconstruction of the structurally complex komatiite sequences can be facilitated by using lithogeochemical correlation of the host volcano-sedimentary successions and particularly tracing geochemically distinctive marker units. For these purposes a special reference in this study was made to the geochemical systematics of rocks that make up footwall succession of the PK complex. It was shown that amphibolites of the host sequence can be geochemically subdivided into different types, including mafic volcaniclastics (mafic-1) and intrusive gabbro (mafic-2). The mafic volcaniclastics are strongly enriched in LREE, possibly due to presence of sedimentary epiclastic material or reflecting magma contamination by the crustal material during ascent through the crust. Additionally, they have notably high-Th contents, allowing them to be classified as having high-Th geochemical affinities. The second group (mafic-2), interpreted as coherent in origin, are characterised by flat REE patterns and lower overall abundances of the rare earths and Zr corresponding to a tholeiitic composition. Contents of Th and TiO 2 of these rocks are clustered in the two narrow intervals of compositions, corresponding to low-Th and intermediate-Th basalts, which form different amphibolite bodies. Mafic volcanics intercalate with the felsic volcanics, and quartz-feldspar-biotite-amphibole (QFBA) schists. It is shown that QFBA schist composition corresponds to metamorphosed clastic sedimentary and volcaniclastic rocks of mixed composition, which contain both clastic material derived from an Archaean provenance and volcaniclastics material derived from mafic and felsic tuffs. In conclusion, abundances and ratios of the trace elements in composition of the mafic rocks are matching to that of the different parts of the Agnew Wiluna greenstone belt and can be used for overall stratigraphic correlations. Turbidite hosted orogenic gold mineralization in the Archean Gadag greenstone belt of the Western Dharwar Craton, forms a major auriferous zone (Central Auriferous Zone) extending over a strike length of about 12 km in the Gadag duplex. The turbidite sequence comprises thick inter-bedded, medium to coarse grained lithic graywacke and thin laminated layers of fine grained carbonaceous phyllite. Gold bearing quartz veins impregnate preferentially along the en-echelon shear planes, fractures and schistosity planes. Auriferous quartz veins are enveloped by the altered wall rocks. Mineralogy of the auriferous zone is dominated by gangue minerals like quartz, ankerite, chlorite, sericite and carbonaceous matter, with subordinate plagioclase. Monazite and xenotime are the important accessory minerals. Arsenopyrite and pyrite are the major sulfide minerals, but pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena and scheelite are also present. Gold in native state occurs within quartz, silicates and arsenopyrite. Notable distinctions in mineral assemblage, texture and in chemical compositions of altered wall rocks compared to the precursor host rock in the study area implies that the metasomatism and wall rock alterations are the results of pervasive infiltration and intense interaction between hydrothermal fluids and the surrounding host rocks over a prolonged period. Sulfides, carbonates, carbonaceous matter, K 2 O, MgO, CaO, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn, As and higher values of gold (0.98–4.72 ppm) are added into the altered wall rocks, immediately enveloping the auriferous quartz vein bodies. The chondrite normalized REE pattern of altered wall rocks exhibits enriched LREE (La N /Yb N = av. 9.54), with prominent negative Eu anomaly. The observed variation in geochemical characteristics and mineral assemblages in the alteration zones indicates differential response of the host rock and intensity of alteration depending on the composition of host rocks and hydrothermal fluids. The auriferous hydrothermal fluids were of low salinity (2.0 to 6.6 wt.% NaCl), dominated by CO 2 –H 2 O (about 30 mol% CO 2 ) with moderate densities (0.7 to 1.04 g/cm 3 ), and gold deposition occurred over a wide temperature range between 175 °C and 325 °C. Gold deposition was influenced by fluid mixing, phase separation and redox reactions. Mixing between CO 2 –H 2 O fluids and more reduced fluids, which evolved during fluid reaction with adjacent carbonaceous wall rocks, was the key factor causing gold deposition. The formation of the Gadag duplex, deformation, folds and reverse strike slip faults (discontinuities) was caused by the compression associated with subduction related tectonic processes. During the initial period of intrusive magmatism (2,555 ± 6 Ma), regional metamorphism occurred in the entire greenstone belt, while during later period, hydrothermal fluids responsible for gold mineralization probably were derived from metamorphic processes as well as from intrusive granites. Such fluids channeled through the thrust in host turbidite sequence carrying dissolved gold, associated metals and sulfur, ultimately were precipitated in a reducing environment in the splays to the thrust in the Gadag duplex at about 2,522 ± 6 Ma, resulting in retrograde alteration assemblages. The Lamego orogenic gold deposit (440,742 oz gold measured reserves and 2.4 million t measured resources, with an average grade of 5.71 g/t Au and a cut-off grade of 2.15 g/t Au; AngloGold Ashanti Córrego do Sítio Mineração S/A (AGA) personal communication, 2014) is located in the 5 km-long trend that includes the world-class Cuiabá deposit. It is hosted in the Neoarchean metavolcano–sedimentary rocks of the Rio das Velhas greenstone belt, Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Brazil. Mineralization is associated mainly with metachert–banded iron formation (BIF) and carbonaceous phyllites in the reclined Lamego fold, in which the Cabeça de Pedra orebody represents the hinge zone. Mineralization is concentrated in silicification zones and their quartz veins, as well as in sulfide minerals, product of BIF sulfidation. Hydrothermal alteration varies according to host rock, with abundant sulfide–carbonate in BIF, and sericite–chlorite in carbonaceous phyllite. Quartz vein classification according to structural relationships and host rocks identified three vein systems. The V1 system, mainly composed of smoky quartz (Qtz I) and pyrite, is extensional, crosscuts the bedding plane S 0 of BIF, and is parallel to the fold axis. The V2 system, of the same composition, is represented by veins that are parallel to the S 1–2 foliation and S 0 . This system is also characterized by silicification zones in the BIF–carbonaceous phyllite contact that has its maximum expression in the hinge zone of folds. The V3 system has milky quartz (Qtz II) veins, which result from the recrystallization of smoky quartz, located mainly in shear zones and faults; these veins form structures en echelon and vein arrays. The most common ore minerals are pyrite, As-pyrite and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion-FI trapped in all quartz veins present composition in the H 2 O–CO 2 ± CH 4 –NaCl system. Fluid evolution can be interpreted in two stages: i) aqueous–carbonic fluid trapped in Qtz I, of low salinity (~ 2% equiv. wt.% NaCl), and ii) carbonic–aqueous fluid, of moderate salinity (average 9 eq. wt.% NaCl) hosted in Qtz II. Both stages are characterized by decrepitation temperatures in the range of 200 to > 300 °C, and suggest a fluid of metamorphic origin. Applying an arsenopyrite geothermometer, the calculated formation temperature for the Cabeça de Pedra orebody is 300 to 375 °C. The vertical intersection of the isochors allows a minimum pressure calculation of 2.6 kbar. The composition of individual FIs of this orebody, obtained by LA-ICP-MS analyses, compared with results of FIs for the Carvoaria Velha deposit, Córrego do Sítio lineament, highlights a standard composition typical of metamorphic fluids with Na > K > Ca > Mg, which increase or decrease in concentration as a function of salinity in both deposits. Trace elements vary according to fluid–rock reactions, and are directly related to the host rock composition. The comparison of data sets of the two deposits shows that the Cabeça de Pedra FIs have a higher enrichment in Zn, while Cu, As and Sb are richer in Carvoaria Velha, suggesting influence of the host rock geochemistry. The suggested mechanisms for gold precipitation at the Cabeça de Pedra orebody, Lamego gold deposit are: i) hydrolysis of the carbonaceous matter of phyllite and BIF, affecting f O 2 , destabilizing sulfur complexes and enhancing gold precipitation; ii) replacement of BIF iron carbonates by sulfides; and iii) continuous pressure changes that lead to silica precipitation and free gold. The Lamego orogenic gold deposit (1.3 Mt measured resources at 7.26 g/t Au) is located at the south-western end of the 5 km-long Cuiabá–Lamego trend, Quadrilátero Ferrífero region, Brazil. Both Archean orogenic gold deposits are situated in the Rio das Velhas greenstone belt with the lithological succession at Lamego consisting of metamorphosed (greenschist facies) mafic volcanic rock, chert and banded iron formation (BIF), and carbonaceous and micaceous pelites. The Lamego fold, which controls the Lamego deposit, is the most visible structure related to the D 1 –D 2 event, with a perimeter of about 4.8 km and a maximum width of 450 m. The fold is defined by the layering of the mafic unit with minor BIF and large exposures of carbonaceous and micaceous pelites. It is a rootless, reclined, isoclinal, cylindrical fold with an axial trace striking northwest–southeast dipping 20° to 30°. The hinge zone is thickened and the limbs are thinned, with the limbs dipping 20° to 30° to the SE. Orebodies consist of the Lamego BIF, where gold-mineralized zones are related to iron-rich bands, and associated silicification zones. Replacement-style mineralization is associated with sulfide bands; mainly pyrite, As-rich pyrite, and arsenopyrite. Two structural generations, G 1 and G 2 , are recognized and encompass a set of structural elements. The G 1 structural generation developed in a progressive deformation event and resulted in structures oriented from NE to SW and dipping to the SE. Structures pertaining to the G 2 structural generation are oriented N–S dipping to the W. The four major high-grade gold orebodies are Carruagem, Queimada, Arco da Velha, and Cabeça de Pedra. Their gold grade shows a spheroidal pattern and a distribution that varies along the S 1–2 foliation. These lenses represent the hinge zone of F 2 reclined folds with the plunge of the orebodies controlled by the F 2 fold axes. The lower-grade gold lenses are controlled by pinch and swell, and locally expressed quartz boudins developed during D 1 –D 2 . They have two orthogonal directions, one to the NW–SE and the other to the NE–SW, thereby defining chocolate-tablet style boudinage. Hydrothermal monazite grains in a mineralized mafic volcanic rock indicate that mineralization formed at 2730 ± 42 Ma (U–Pb SHRIMP). Younger monazite dated at 2387 ± 46 Ma, and xenotime dated at 518.5 ± 9 Ma suggest Siderian and Cambrian imprint in the Lamego deposit area. The Cambrian age reflects the late stages of the Brasiliano orogenic cycle, which is expressed in the Lamego deposit by the S 3 crenulation cleavage (trend NS and dip steeply to the E). Importantly, the Cambrian structural modification is responsible for the present geometry of the Lamego orebodies, but is not associated with hydrothermal alteration; it has not introduced any new gold and also has not caused remobilization of the orebodies or ore minerals. The Hietaharju Ni–Cu–PGE deposit occurs in the Archean Suomussalmi greenstone belt of eastern Finland and is associated with high-Mg basalts and low-Mg komatiitic rocks. It represents a PGE-enriched type among komatiite-related Ni–Cu deposits. The Hietaharju deposit consists of several mineralized lenses in highly altered olivine–pyroxene cumulates (i.e., talc–carbonate–chlorite rocks) and contains disseminated, massive to semi-massive and brecciated sulfides. Post-magmatic processes have not significantly changed the primary magmatic sulfide assemblage (i.e., pyrrhotite–pentlandite–chalcopyrite), but has modified sulfide textures and possibly remobilized and reconcentrated the sulfides. Though the deposit is currently subeconomic, it has high PGE contents in the sulfide fraction, averaging 5.7 ppm Pd and 2 ppm Pt (average of all ore types), being highest in disseminated sulfides. The parental magma represents an intermediate type between Al-undepleted and Al-depleted komatiites and differs from most other komatiitic rocks in the Tipasjärvi–Kuhmo–Suomussalmi greenstone belt complex, which are normally of the Al-undepleted type. The relatively fractionated nature of the komatiitic basalt parental magma of the Hietaharju deposit is consistent with the low Ni/Cu (< 4) and Ni/Co (< 18) and high Pd/Ir (< 25) ratios of the sulfide fraction, similar to the values in the Paleoproterozoic Raglan belt deposits, Canada. Use of REE for constraining crustal contamination is hampered by the highly altered nature of komatiitic rocks in the Hietaharju area. Sulfides in the country rock metasediments that host the Hietaharju Ni–Cu–PGE deposit show clear mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionation (MIF-S) consistent with their age and published S isotope data from the Suomussalmi belt. In contrast, sulfides of the Hietaharju Ni–Cu–PGE deposit only possess a small degree of MIF-S, providing limited direct evidence for the role of local metasedimentary sulfur in ore formation. Archean base metal sulfide mineralization is among the potential sources of sulfur, however, and, as shown by the epithermal Taivaljärvi Au–Ag–Zn deposit, can have mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionation that is similar in magnitude and sign to that of the Hietaharju Ni–Cu–PGE deposit. We present a mineral systems approach to predictive mapping of orogenic gold prospectivity in the Giyani greenstone belt (GGB) by using layers of spatial evidence representing district-scale processes that are critical to orogenic gold mineralization, namely (a) source of metals/fluids, (b) active pathways, (c) drivers of fluid flow and (d) metal deposition. To demonstrate that the quality of a predictive map of mineral prospectivity is a function of the quality of the maps used as sources of spatial evidence, we created two sets of prospectivity maps — one using an old lithologic map and another using an updated lithological map as two separate sources of spatial evidence for source of metals/fluids, drivers of fluid flow and metal deposition. We also demonstrate the importance of using spatially-coherent (or geologically-consistent) deposit occurrences in data-driven predictive mapping of mineral prospectivity. The best predictive orogenic gold prospectivity map obtained in this study is the one that made use of spatial evidence from the updated lithological map and spatially-coherent orogenic gold occurrences. This map predicts 20% of the GGB to be prospective for orogenic gold, with 89% goodness-of-fit between spatially-coherent inactive orogenic gold mines and individual layers of spatial evidence and 89% prediction-rate against spatially-coherent orogenic gold prospects. In comparison, the predictive gold prospectivity map obtained by using spatial evidence from the old lithological map and all gold occurrences has 80% goodness-of-fit but only 63% prediction-rate. These results mean that the prospectivity map based on spatially-coherent gold occurrences and spatial evidence from the updated lithological map predicts exploration targets better (i.e., 28% smaller prospective areas with 9% stronger fit to training gold mines and 26% higher prediction-rate with respect to validation gold prospects) than the prospectivity map based on all known gold occurrences and spatial evidence from the old lithological map. A Mesoarchean greenstone belt (3.5–3.0 Ga) in the western part of the East Indian Shield comprising the Iron Ore Group of the Noamundi basin contains economic resources of both iron and manganese ores in the NNE plunging regional synclinorium. Manganese mineralization in the central and eastern parts of this synclinorium, particularly in Joda–Noamundi sector, has taken place in multiple cycles starting from syngenetic sedimentary and exhalative type through mobilization and remobilization in different stages of tectonism, deformation and hydrothermal activities to latest lateritic or supergene type. A relatively high temperature metamorphic jacobsite–hausmannite–bixbyite–braunite assemblage, low temperature hydrothermal pyrolusite–psilomelane–hollandite assemblage and supergene pyrolusite–manganomelane–groutite–polianite assemblage are present and were formed by recycling of manganese in different stages of mineralization. A detailed structural study of the manganese ore bodies as well as their ore petrographic and mineralogical characteristics with mineral chemistry has revealed systematic mineralization and their relation to deformational phases. Such recycling of manganese and its structural control of mineralization in different phases is unique of its kind in comparison with other Archean manganese deposits in the world. Nyankanga is the largest gold deposit in the Geita Greenstone Belt of the northern Tanzania Craton. The deposit is hosted within an Archean volcano-sedimentary package dominated by ironstones and intruded by a large diorite complex, the Nyankanga Intrusive Complex. The supracrustal package is now included within the intrusive complex as roof pendants. The ironstone fragments contain evidence of multiple folding events that occurred prior to intrusion. The supracrustal package and Nyankanga Intrusive Complex are cut by a series of NE–SW trending, moderately NW dipping fault zones with a dominant reverse component of movement but showing multiple reactivation events with both oblique and normal movement components. The deposit is cut by a series of NW trending strike slip faults and ~ E–W trending late normal faults. The Nyankanga Fault Zone is a major NW dipping deformation zone developed mainly along the ironstone–diorite contacts that is mineralised over its entire length. The gold mineralization is hosted within the damage zone associated with Nyankanga Fault Zone by both diorite and ironstone with higher grades typically occurring in ironstone. Ore shoots dip more steeply than the Nyankanga Fault Zone. The mineralization is associated with sulfidation fronts and replacement textures in ironstones and is mostly contained as disseminated sulphides in diorite. The close spatial relationship between gold mineralization and the ironstone/diorite contact suggests that the reaction between the mineralising fluid and iron rich lithotypes played an important role in precipitating gold. Intense brecciation and veining, mainly in the footwall of Nyankanga Fault Zone, indicates that the fault zone increased permeability and allowed the access of mineralising fluids. A 3D geological model of the Archean Esker ultramafic–mafic intrusive complex of the Ring of Fire intrusive suite of northwestern Ontario (Canada) is presented, providing insight into the nature of its magmatic plumbing system and allowing for speculation on the formation of its valuable Ni-Cu-(PGE) and chromitite deposits. The 3D model was constrained by exploration drillholes and high-resolution aeromagnetic data, which allowed the interpretation of the broad internal structure of the intrusive complex and two shear zones, which define for a major part of their strike extent the contacts between ultramafic and overlying mafic intrusive rocks. Restoring the post-emplacement component of strike-slip displacement and subsequently rotating the intrusive complex back from its tilted to sub-horizontal orientation of emplacement, provides a three-dimensional rendition of a 14 km-long dominantly tabular-shaped intrusive complex. The complex is defined by intact basal intrusive contacts with localized keel-shaped ultramafic promontories parallel to a nearby blade-shaped magmatic conduit. The keels extend in a subparallel orientation to depths of up to 1 km into the underlying tonalitic rocks and coincide with significant offsets of the basal intrusive contact, leading to speculation that their intrusion may have been guided by pre-existing normal faults. Two of these magmatic conduits host Ni-Cu-(PGE) deposits/prospects that formed from gravitational segregation of sulfides. The chromitite deposits, hosted in ultramafic rocks at higher stratigraphic levels, were modeled based on drill hole assay data. Zones of dominantly massive to semi-massive chromitite were defined by the ≥ 35% Cr 2 O 3 threshold, while intercalated sequences of chromitite in dunite/peridotite were defined by the ≥ 15% to ≤ 35% Cr 2 O 3 percentage range. The 3D modeled surfaces fitted to these constraints exhibit ore zones with lateral extents from several hundreds of meters for massive bodies up to a maximum of 2 km for intercalated chromitite ore that are dominantly conformable to the layering of the ultramafic host rocks. The lack of lateral continuity of chromitite ore zones beyond this scale, suggests that the chromitite layers are not continuous along the entire strike extent of the Esker intrusive complex, which is consistent with bifurcations of the 3D modeled ore shells signifying pinch-outs of both the massive chromitite layers and the dunitic interlayers. This discontinuous distribution of chromitite ore resembles that in the stratiform deposits of the Stillwater Complex and may support recent models of mechanical segregation of chromitite from cotectic chromite-olivine slurries. Based on our 3D model, we propose that the Esker intrusive complex evolved as a series of individual intrusions that were emplaced during multiple magmatic pulses that eventually coalesced to form a composite ultramafic–mafic complex prior to being dissected and partly dismembered by post-ore shear zone deformation. The Hongtoushan Cu-Zn deposit in the Neoarchean Qingyuan greenstone belt of the North China Craton is the oldest volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit in China. The ore samples are classified by massive sulfide ores, disseminated sulfide ores, and sulfide-bearing quartz veins. Four types of massive sulfide ores are further identified. Type A massive ore, characterized by the granular quartz and euhedral dark mineral aggregates in the massive sulfides matrix, is interpreted as the result of partial melting of primary sulfides, and type B might record the process of partial melting and mechanical migration. Type C massive ore, formed by the recrystallization of type B massive ore, is characterized by coarse pyrite and pyrrhotite porphyroblasts. Type D massive ore undergoes deformation and upgrades by elements released during recrystallization. The relic anhydrite in type A massive ore is the preserve of the primary mineral from VMS mineralization. Most sulfide in massive ores has δ34S values closing to ∼ 0 ‰, showing magmatic sulfur characteristics. The intergrowth of pyrrhotite and magnetite with higher δ34S (5.5–8.3 ‰) is suggested to be the dissolution product of primary anhydrite. The sulfides from the tourmaline-bearing quartz veins have negative δ34S (-6.0 – −2.6 ‰) values, indicating that the sulfur was released from the desulfurization of massive pyrite. The ore remobilization is dominated by partial melting of sulfide and mechanical migration during the peak metamorphism. The fluid metasomatism is activated at the retrograde metamorphism. To bring novel evidence on this relation, ore parageneses related to Bachelor/O'Brien, Beattie, Douay and Golden Arrow gold deposits were studied together with trace elements distribution at micron-scale in Au-bearing pyrites. Further, the δ34S pyrite signature in the Beattie deposit were compared to epithermal Phanerozoic analogues in post-collisional tectonic settings. Except for Golden Arrow, results show a paragenetic assemblage of K-feldspar-albite-anhydrite-barite-celestite-apatite-rutile-calcite-dolomite which is also common in Phanerozoic magmatic-hydrothermal systems. Gold-bearing pyrites are characterized by a higher abundance of most trace elements compared to OGS. Positive Au-Ag-Bi-Te-Tl-W-anomalies – which are not observed in OGS – suggest deposition from highly oxidized fluids, while Au precipitation in OGS is mainly controlled by reduced fluids. The presence of highly oxidized environments is also confirmed by very low δ34S pyrite values ranging from −17.3‰ to −13.9‰ VCDT found at Beattie, in the range of those found in Phanerozoic deposits of Tuvatu and Emperor in Fiji. It is proposed that Archean gold related with late alkaline continental magmatism is deposited both at the top of porphyritic system and in epithermal environment, before the acme of deformation and metamorphism. High-grade gold-quartz-sulphide lodes of the Sheba-Fairview Complex (SFC) of gold mines in the Barberton Greenstone Belt of South Africa describe a wide range of geometries, orientations, controls, and a number of different and often contradicting models have been postulated to account for their formation. This paper aims to present a holistic model that describes the focussing of a regional-scale fluid flow into narrower, mineralized structures during the late-stage refolding and tightening of the first-order folds that host the mineralization. The auriferous reefs of the SFC are hosted by well-bedded, low-grade metamorphic, clastic sedimentary rocks of the Paleoarchaean Fig Tree and Moodies groups that are preserved in two regional-scale, strongly curved and refolded synclinal structures along the northern margin of the belt. The majority (85 %) of presently and historically mined orebodies occur in the broad hinge zone of the refolded synclines. This suggests the regional-scale fluid redistribution from fold limbs into the first-order fold hinge following regional hydraulic gradients during refolding. Ubiquitous bedding-parallel quartz (-carbonate-sulphide) veins and associated alteration underline the significance of bedding anisotropies and bedding-parallel flexural slip for regional-scale fluid flow during refolding. The focussing of these fluids and economic-grade gold mineralization occurs preferentially along contacts between lithologies with pronounced rheological contrasts. Lithological contacts combine the effects of strain localization in weaker units and the formation of fracture permeabilities in competent units across these contacts. Examples include kilometer-scale hinge-parallel ore shoots that are controlled by undulations (jogs) along low-displacement slip horizons between retrogressed ultramafic rocks and competent metasediments. In contrast, low-angle thrusts or steep reverse faults form accommodation structures related to the late-stage tightening of the first-order folds. These structures transect bedding at high angles and are, thus, ideally orientated to collect fluid from the regional system of bedding-parallel fluid flow. Mineralization in the SFC may be explained by the spatial and temporal coincidence of (1) late-stage NW-SE shortening and refolding, of (2) a well-bedded, anisotropic wall-rock sequence, associated with (3) regional-scale fluid redistribution along bedding planes during flexural slip, leading to (4) fluid focussing into either jog geometries or bedding discordant structures. Previous studies focused on banded iron formations (BIFs) from the eastern North China Craton (NCC), few were conducted on those of the western NCC. This paper concentrates on two BIFs, Sanheming and Gongyiming, from the Guyang Greenstone Belt (GB), western NCC. SIMS U-Pb analyses of zircons from the amphibolite interlayers of Sanheming and Gongyiming BIFs gave upper intercept ages of 2562 ± 14 Ma and 2569 ± 78 Ma, respectively, coupled with 2555 ± 56 Ma for the tonalite with BIF xenoliths, the formation age of the BIFs is inferred to be 2.56-2.57 Ga. Protolith reconstruction based on geochemistry and field occurrence of the amphibolites shows that they are originally basaltic. Trace elements reveal that the basalts of Sanheming and Gongyiming are T-MORB and N-MORB, respectively. Metabasites from other locations of the Guyang GB in previous studies display island arc geochemical characteristics. Plus the lithologic assemblage of komatiite, basaltic komatiite, boninite, tholeiite, high-Mg andesite and Nb-enriched basalt identified by previous work, the geodynamic setting of the BIFs from Guyang GB is deduced to be a mantle plume erupting into the subduction zone and they were deposited in arc-related basins. Relatively low contents of Al2O3, TiO2 and HFSE for the BIFs indicate negligible detritus involvement. PAAS-normalized REY profiles are characterized by LREE depletion and HREE enrichment, positive La, Gd, Y and Eu anomalies, weak negative Ce anomalies and Y/Ho weight ratios of 26-41, indicating a mixture of submarine high-temperature hydrothermal fluids and seawater. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns for the BIFs are similar to those of the komatiites occurring at the bottom of the GB. Collectively, it is speculated that submarine high-temperature hydrothermal fluids leached out the Fe and Si of oceanic volcanics during circulation, and they deposited due to the changed physiochemical conditions when the fluids mixed with the seawater. The hydrothermally altered amphibolites proximal to the Gongyiming upgraded iron ores are enriched in various elements added by the hydrothermal fluids. Plus the δ18O values of magnetites and quartzs, the genesis of the Gongyiming upgraded iron ores is proposed to be hydrothermal interaction with low-grade BIF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A three-dimensional model of the gold-rich Paleoproterozoic Ashanti Greenstone Belt has been built with a "hybrid" geological modeling method using Geomodeller and Gocad, then inverted using VPmg software. The model helps to identify the main regional-scale controls leading to abundant gold mineralization in the southeast of the belt by highlighting the lithological distribution and geometry of geological structures. The three-dimensional geological model shows that 85% of gold occurrences in the Ashanti Greenstone Belt are proximal to a specific tholeiitic metabasaltic horizon "BV1". This result is noteworthy given that the relatively thin, 300 m thick, BV1 layer represents only 10%, by volume, of the modeled Sefwi Group stratigraphy. A map of distance between the topography and the BV1 layer is produced and identifies areas showing a high probability to host gold deposits in the southeast of the Ashanti Belt. Possible structural controls performed by the BV1 tholeiitic metabasaltic rocks on the location of gold occurrences are discussed, and we hypothesize that the BV1 layer acted as a mineralization trap or source of gold. The Luxi area in the central part of Eastern North China Craton (NCC) is located in a relatively stable intraplate environment and preserves some of the large granite–greenstone belts in the North China Craton (NCC). The intensity and extent of multiple magmatic pluses associated with the destruction of the NCC during Mesozoic were comparatively less in this region. However, the nature and timing of the magmatic pulses in the Luxi area are critical to the evaluation of the differential destruction of the NCC's lithosphere as well as in understanding the origin and extent of the associated gold mineralization. In this study, we report new zircon U−Pb data on the basement rocks in the Luxi area which show that the protoliths of the TTG (tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite) gneisses, granitoids and amphibolites formed at 2572.2±8.8Ma, 2531±12Ma, and 2572±32Ma respectively. The Luxi area experienced two major crust accretions at 2.7−2.75Ga and ca. 2.5Ga. The Mesozoic Tongshi complex formed at 175.6±1.7−178.4±2.1Ma associated with fluid modification at the later stage of magma crystallization. The alteration age (162.2±3.2−165.4±2.8Ma) may represent the mineralization age of the Guilaizhuang gold deposit. The diorite porphyry of Tongjing complex was emplaced at 128.0±5.4Ma. The inherited zircon and Lu−Hf isotope data suggest extensive recycling of basement rocks in the Luxi area. The sequence of Mesozoic magmatic intrusions shows a clear variation from intermediate (alkaline) through intermediate (cal-alkaline), and felsic–mafic, and the main intrusive ages can be divided into distinct phases at 170–200Ma, 100–150Ma (with peak at 120–130Ma), and 80–90Ma respectively. The Tongshi complex formed during the compression–extension stage after the collision of the Yangtze Craton and North China Craton, whereas the Tongjing complex and other alkaline, felsic and mafic complexes in the Luxi area formed within the geodynamic setting of Pacific subduction. The early Cretaceous magmatism also simultaneously occurred in the Taihang Mountain area (far from the plate margin) in the central part of the North China Craton, with related gold mineralization. The Mesozoic gold mineralization in Jiaodong and Luxi in the eastern, and those in the central parts of the North China Craton appear to be linked to extensive crustal recycling in an extensional tectonic regime. [Display omitted] • At least five productive felsic volcanic centers have been identified in the Paleoproterozoic Penokean Volcanic Belt (PVB). To date, these drill-defined (inferred + indicated + measured) resources collectively contain nearly 93 million tonnes of VMS-style, base (Cu, Pb, Zn) and precious metal (Ag, Au) mineralization. From this resource base, only 1.55 million tonnes have been produced and another ∼44 million tonnes are considered potentially minable reserves. • Mineral resource assessments completed in 1996 and 2007 collectively suggest there is a 50%–90% chance of at least 4 to 23 (average ∼ 12) or more VMS deposits remaining to be discovered in the Ladysmith-Rhinelander complex and to a lesser extent the Wausau complex of the PVB. • Many of these undiscovered VMS deposits will be identified in the five, highly permissive felsic volcanic centers. These centers are distributed within the Highway 8 intra-arc rift basin of the Ladysmith Rhinelander volcanic complex. Other permissive felsic centers likely exist in the belt particularly in the Milaca–Princeton and Marshfield subterranes. Five productive felsic volcanic centers have been identified in the Paleoproterozoic Penokean Volcanic Belt (PVB). Each center hosts at least one potentially economic polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit. To date, these drill-defined (inferred + indicated + measured) resources collectively contain over 93 million tonnes of VMS-style, base (Cu, Pb, Zn) and precious metal (Ag, Au) mineralization including nearly 4 million ounces of gold. This does not include smaller, less defined (mostly inferred) deposits in the belt that would increase the total to at least 150 million tonnes. From this resource base only 1.73 million tonnes of actual ore production has occurred. However, previous positive feasibility studies completed on the Crandon (1994), Lynne (1995) and most recently (2020) Back Forty deposits verify a total of approximately 44 million tonnes, or 47% of the total drill-defined resource base, are potentially minable reserves. Currently the PVB resource base remains as unrealized new wealth. Mineral resource assessments completed in 1996 and 2007 collectively suggest there is a high probability of at least 4 to 22 (average ~13) or more VMS deposits remaining to be discovered in the Ladysmith-Rhinelander complex and to a lesser extent the Wausau complex of the PVB. These newly discovered VMS deposits will fill out the tonnage distribution for this belt by following a natural geometric (log normal) progression consistent with established grade-tonnage models. It is postulated that among these will be one giant (>100 million tonnes) deposit. If verified, potentially economic VMS mineralization hosted by the PVB would be comparable to other productive Paleoproterozoic greenstone belts in the Canadian Shield such as Flin Flon (>200 million tonnes) or even approach that of the prolific Neoarchean Abitibi (~775 million tonnes). Exploration to date suggests that many of these undiscovered VMS deposits will be identified in five, highly permissive felsic volcanic centers. These centers, which comprise less than 2% of the known belt, are distributed within the Highway 8 intra-arc rift basin of the 1,880 to 1,860 Ma old Ladysmith Rhinelander volcanic complex. Exact aerial boundaries are poorly defined. However, extrapolation of geophysical, drill hole and rare outcrop data provides a reasonable estimate. Each productive center is stratigraphically associated with major, district-scale, commonly mineralized, meta-argillite formations or formational groups. Felsic centers are identified in the Wausau complex but have thus far been barren of significant VMS-style mineralization as is the adjacent Wausau basin. Future exploration for new VMS deposits should be focused within the productive felsic centers where a number of prospective targets and prospects have been previously identified. Other significant felsic centers likely exist within the Highway 8 basin particularly in Cambrian sandstone-covered areas along the western and eastern margins of the belt. Additionally, at least one felsic center may be present in the Milaca complex which could have VMS potential. Of particular note is the VMS potential of a second mostly Cambrian sandstone-covered, greenstone belt in the Marshfield subterrane (Eau Claire complex). Geophysical data suggest possible back-arc or intra-arc rift basins may be present and historical drilling has identified at least one VMS occurrence. This highly prospective volcanic complex is essentially new hunting ground with its own deposit tonnage distribution of potentially supergene-enriched VMS deposits. The Shankaraghatta ultramafic–mafic suite of rocks (12 × 0.3 km) within the late Archean Shimoga greenstone belt (Western Dharwar Craton, southern India) is constituted of sulfide-bearing serpentinized dunite flanked by metabasaltic schist rocks, which are probable analogues of the adcumulate-mesocumulate sheet flows in a komatiitic sequence, flanked by komatiitic basalts. Owing to limited field exposures in this study, the bulk concentrations of Ni, Cr, Ti, Fe, and Mg were used to classify the rocks into different volcanogenic facies observed in a komatiitic flow. The mineralized mesocumulate (serpentinized dunites) flanking its S-poor adcumulate counterpart host 5–8 modal % disseminated sulfide globules formed by an assemblage of pentlandite-millerite-pyrite-chalcopyrite. Millerite is the dominant sulfide mineral, whereas coarse euhedral pyrite grains are abundant in the serpentinites. The sulfide-bearing serpentinites have higher platinum-group element (PGE) abundances than those lacking visible sulfides (∑PGE sulfide-bearing samples = 440–1848 ppb; ∑PGE sulfide-lacking samples = 4.8–69 ppb) and show a strong PPGE (Pd, Pt, Rh) enriched trend with distinct negative Pt-anomalies in the primitive-mantle normalized PGE diagram. The mineralized serpentinites have higher Ni and Cu concentrations (0.5–2.2 wt% and 29–201 ppm, respectively) compared to their unmineralized counterparts (0.1–0.6 wt% and 22–72 ppm, respectively). Major element data indicate a komatiitic composition for the serpentinites, whereas the schists are komatiitic basalts. Chondrite-normalized REE plots for the serpentinites and schists show LREE-enriched patterns (La/Sm N serp = 1.8–3.5; La/Sm N schist = 2.5), with almost flat to slightly depleted HREEs (Gd/Yb N serp = 1.1–1.7; Gd/Yb N schist = 1.8). The rocks show prominent negative anomalies of Zr and Hf, which along with the subchondritic Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 ratios for serpentinites (~9.9), indicate derivation of the komatiitic magma from a plume that originated from a deep mantle source (>400 km) with the mantle residue retaining a majorite garnet phase. The komatiites and komatiitic basalts from which the serpentinites and schists were derived have a common mantle source. They are connected by fractional crystallization as understood from collinear and coherent patterns in bivariate plots between major oxides such as MgO, and alteration resistant immobile trace elements such as Nb, that are plotted with other major and trace elements, as well as from the coherent patterns observed in the chondrite-normalized REE and multi-element spider diagrams. The serpentinites and schists show signatures of crustal contamination as defined by negative anomalies of Nb, Ta, and Ti, high La/Sm ratios, along with higher concentrations of trace elements like La and Th, and lower Nb/Th ratios (Nb/Th avg serp = 6.6; Nb/Th avg schist = 3.7). AFC (Assimilation Fractional Crystallization) models indicate that the schists underwent a greater extent of crustal contamination (50% AFC) relative to the serpentinites (12% AFC). Sulfide saturation was achieved late, after emplacement of the komatiitic magma and crystallization of the olivine adcumulates, when the melt was slightly more differentiated to form the mesocumulates. The sulfides are later overprinted by low-temperature alteration processes, as evident from the significant enrichments in serpentinites for Au (Au N avg: 2.1), As (As N avg: 20), Bi (Bi N avg: 8.2), and Te (Te N avg: 1.5), which occurred perhaps during the replacement of pentlandites by millerites. Although many aspects of orogenic gold systems are well understood, considerable debate surrounds the chemistry of the ore-forming fluids and their relevance to mineralization. This may in part relate to the lack of both regional-scale studies and a uniform approach in studying fluid inclusions in these complex and protracted hydrothermal ore systems. In order to address this problem, over 30 orogenic-type deposits covering a variety of geological settings were systematically studied using the fluid inclusion assemblage (FIA) protocol integrated with microthermometry in the gold-endowed Abitibi greenstone belt, Canada. A diversity of fluid inclusion types are documented (i.e., carbonic CO 2 -CH 4 , aqueous-carbonic, aqueous), in addition to complex textural features, in particular decrepitation clusters which are rarely reported in the literature or the deposits studied; together these data provide new insight to these ore systems. Furthermore, we note that the fluid composition is significantly affected by the proximity of carbon-rich sedimentary units which are capable of producing a carbonic-only fluid. In later stages of hydrothermal evolution, variable XCO 2 in aqueous-carbonic inclusions reflects variable degrees of fluid-rock interaction. Pressure cycling is an integral part of these systems, but petrographic evidence of in situ fluid unmixing is lacking, and cannot be accounted for gold mineralization. Vein-style gold is not related to fluid chemistry and, where best constrained with petrography (i.e., visible Au near fluid inclusions), P-T estimates based on fluid inclusion microthermometry link the mineralization to the later, low-pressure (<1.5 kbar) stages of deposit evolution. Accordingly, gold is coeval with quartz vein formation in epizonal deposits whereas it postdates quartz in the ore dominant mesozonal ore systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orogenic gold deposits in the Jiaodong Peninsula contain >5000 t of known gold resources. Precambrian metamorphic rocks and Mesozoic granite represent the main host rocks for these deposits, but gold deposition (~120 Ma) is significantly younger and it remains unclear whether some of the metals are sourced from the local country rock to these mineral systems. This study uses in situ geochemistry and isotope signatures of scheelite (Sr isotopes) and galena (Pb isotopes) at the Xiadian and Majiayao gold deposits to determine the role, if any, of country rock compositions on the formation of gold ore systems in the Jiaodong Peninsula. Scheelite from the two gold deposits occurred as part of a syn -mineralization stage with quartz, siderite, ankerite, and pyrite in the main orebody and/or its footwall. New results show that scheelite yields high Sr (>200 ppm) and low Mo (<40 ppm) and As (<5 ppm) concentrations, bell to flat REE profiles, and variable Eu anomalies. These scheelite compositions are very similar to previously published results from orogenic-style gold deposits in greenstone belts, indicating fluids with similar geochemical properties. The Xiadian scheelite with negative Eu anomalies may be controlled by REE substitution mechanisms and the composition of parent fluids that may have interacted with graphitic formations of the Jingshan Group, while the Majiayao scheelite with positive Eu anomaly is most likely the result of crystallographic controls on REE partition. New scheelite Sr isotope results for the Xiadian (87Sr/86Sr: 0.71258–0.71540) and Majiayao (87Sr/86Sr: 0.71568–0.71930) deposits further support interaction between hydrothermal fluids and local to distal country rocks. The high radiogenic Sr isotope signature of scheelite from the Majiayao deposit is primarily derived from the regional Jingshan and/or Penglai Group meta -sedimentary rocks. Galena in the Xiadian deposit, which occurs with pyrite in the syn -mineralization stage, has Pb isotope signatures of 206Pb/204Pb: 17.185 ± 0.004 that may reflect mixing between the Linglong granite and/or metamorphic rocks. The Majiayao galena yields the least radiogenic Pb isotope results (206Pb/204Pb: 16.554 ± 0.040), which are consistent with sulfide in the Jiaodong Group meta -volcanic rocks (206Pb/204Pb: 16.270–16.718) and suggest remobilization of Pb from sulfide within the previously metamorphosed formation. New geochemistry and isotope results document a mixed metal contribution that likely occurred as a consequence of fluid-rock interaction between ore-forming fluids and wall rocks at shallow crustal depths (<10 km). Such processes may have played a critical role in generating similar metallogenic features of the Jiaodong gold deposits as well as syn -metamorphic orogenic gold deposits in other greenstone belts. Our study highlights that the remobilization and precipitation of metals (Pb, Sr, W, and possible Au) scavenged from country rocks are perhaps ubiquitous processes, whether in syn- and/or post-metamorphism orogenic gold systems. [Display omitted] • New Re-Os isotopic data and isochron ages for the Sakatti Cu-Ni-PGE deposit. • Open-system behaviour of low-Os sulphides potentially during Svecofennian orogeny. • Os-rich sulphides yielded slightly radiogenetic initial Os composition. • In contrast, chromite and olivine show a near-chondritic γOs indicating a mantle source for Os. The Sakatti Cu-Ni-PGE sulphide deposit is located in the Central Lapland greenstone belt in northern Finland. It comprises three mineralised olivine cumulate units called the main, north-east and south-west bodies. Sulphides form massive, semi-massive, disseminated and vein-type ores in these ultramafic rocks. The ore mineral assemblage is typical for magmatic sulphide deposits, including chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite and magnetite. We present Re-Os concentration and isotope data for whole-rock olivine cumulate samples and mineral separates (chromite, olivine) as well as for massive sulphides and associated oxides. Chromite separates contain 2.49–115.4 ppb Os and 0.03–2.85 ppb Re while olivine separates have 3.13–42.1 ppb Os and 0.43–3.89 ppb Re. Their host olivine cumulates show Os and Re concentrations of 1.17–23.7 ppb and 0.04–0.93 ppb, respectively. The sulphide and magnetite separates show a considerable variation and overlap in the Os and Re concentrations, with the total range being 0.69–393.5 ppb for Os and 4.44–246.9 ppb for Re. Among the sulphide separates, the highest Re and Os concentrations were obtained for pyrrhotite and pyrite, respectively. On average, Re/Os ratios increase in the following order: chromite, whole-rock olivine cumulate, olivine, pyrite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and magnetite. Excluding the most disturbed samples, 30 analyses yielded a Re-Os isochron age of 2063 ± 35 Ma for the Sakatti deposit, being similar to the U-Pb zircon age of 2058 ± 4 Ma determined for the Kevitsa Ni-Cu sulphide ore-bearing intrusion, which is located ~20 km NE of Sakatti. Re-Os dating of massive sulphide samples yields variable Re-Os isochron ages from 1852 ± 200 Ma to 2045 ± 300 Ma, with all sulphide samples together giving an age of 1928 ± 16 Ma. This indicates resetting and open-system behaviour of some sulphide samples, potentially related to Svecofennian orogenic events. In spite of this resetting, the low Re/Os ratios and high Os concentrations of chromite and several sulphide separates allow us to determine their initial γOs values, which turned out to be very close to chondritic for chromite and moderately radiogenic (γOs from +21 to +56) for sulphides, indicating that sulphide saturation took place after chromite crystallisation. We examined Precambrian Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) of the Indian Shield for their economic potential. These include 3 proposed LIP events in the Archean and 12 LIP events during Proterozoic. Mafic-ultramafic units of LIPs are key targets for mineralization of Cu-Ni-Co-platinum group elements (PGEs), Fe-Ti-V and Cr; both as oxides and sulfides. Examples include Cr, PGE, V-Ti deposit hosted in the ultramafic rocks of the Paleoarchean Nuggihalli greenstone belt in the western Dharwar craton, which is linked to the ca. 3.35–3.34 Ga Sargur LIP. More broadly, geochemical data indicating significant crustal contamination suggest Cu-Ni, Co, PGE sulfide mineralization potential for the ca. 2.80–2.75 Ga Ghatgaon, ca. 2.37–2.36 Ga Bangalore, ca. 2.22 Ga Kandlamadugu, ca. 2.21–2.18 Ga Anantapur, and ca. 1.89–1.85 Ga Bastanar LIPs. The Malanjkhand Cu mineralization in the Bastar craton can be explained by hydrothermal alteration of mafic dykes of the ca. 1.89–1.85 Ga Bastanar LIP generating immiscible sulfide melts, which, in turn, are deposited in adjacent granitic rocks; however, its association with the ca. 2.50–2.47 Ga Dantewara LIP cannot be ruled out. The Taramatipet and Pirancheru molybdenite occurrences in the eastern Dharwar craton can be explained by the mixing of a sialic magma with injections of a deep-seated basic melt associated with the emplacement of mafic dykes linked to the ca. 2.26–2.25 Ga Ippaguda LIP. Diamondiferous kimberlites in the Dharwar, Bastar and Vindhyan (surrounding the Bundelkhand craton) regions are coeval and linked to the ca. 1.11 (−1.05) Ga Mahoba LIP. REE, U-Th, Nb-Ta, P, and Cu mineralization associated with the ca. 0.80–0.75 Ga alkaline-carbonatite complexes from the southern Indian Shield is linked to the ca. 0.77–0.75 Ga Malani Igneous Suite (Silicic LIP) from the Aravalli craton. Organic carbon rich meta -sedimentary rocks are important repositories of gold, PGE and vestiges of the biogeochemical cycles that prevailed during the Precambrian time. In this study, we report gold, PGE and δ34S concentrations of carbonaceous phyllites from Neoarchean Chitradurga, Gadag greenstone belts of western Dharwar Craton and Mangampeta of Proterozoic Cuddapah basin, eastern Dharwar Craton to understand their metallogenesis and depositional environments. Chitradurga phyllites (avg. Au = 180 ppb) show elevated concentrations of refractory gold compared to Gadag (avg. Au = 38 ppb) and Mangampeta shales (avg. Au = 23 ppb). The Archean carbonaceous phyllites display three generations of pyrites and their mineral chemistry suggests hydrothermal imprints while Proterozoic shales have two generations of diagenetic pyrites. Gadag has high PGE concentration (ΣPGE = 55 ppb) compared to Chitradurga (ΣPGE = 37 ppb) and Mangampeta (ΣPGE = 27 ppb). The PGE geochemistry is characterized by enrichment of PPGE over IPGE with Au > Pt > Pd and the Au/Pd, Pd/Pt, Ru/Ir, Ir/Pd ratios coupled with negative Pt (Pt/Pt*) anomalies indicate hydrothermal source. The Chitradurga and Gadag samples yielded low sulphur isotopic signatures (δ34S = 1.8–2 and 1.3–2‰ respectively) whereas the Proterozoic Mangampeta samples have comparatively higher values (δ34S = 8.4–34.3‰) suggesting hydrothermal and sea water sulphate sources respectively. Sulphate present in Archean and Proterozoic sea water was converted to sulphur by bacterial sulphate reduction which led to the formation of pyrites. In the Archean phyllites, the metal bearing bisulphide complexes were adsorbed into the pyrites while the Proterozoic shales are characterized by the partitioning of organo-metallic complexes into the pyrite during the diagenesis. Strong positive correlations of transition metals, redox sensitive elements with PGE indicate hydrothermal source and V/(V + Ni), U/Th, Th/U, authigenic U attest euxinic paleo-redox conditions. Thus, biogenically mediated redox depositional environments which prevailed during Archean and Proterozoic times have enhanced the metal sequestration processes that subsequently resulted in the ore formation in these carbonaceous phyllites.
