The author discusses artwork of anatomical, physiological, and medical interest at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, which reopened in March 2013 after a decade of renovation. Gabriel Metsu's 17th century painting "The Sick Child" was made when Amsterdam was being ravaged by the plague. Jan Steen's light-hearted portrayal of illness in the painting "The Sick Woman" is addressed. Medical books and prints from the 17th century that are also on display are discussed.
