This paper assesses the relative accuracy of a number of techniques that are capable of predicting a wide range of creep properties. The techniques studied in this paper include the 4-Θ, 6-θ, CRISPEN, Omega and CDM methodologies. The parameters of these models were estimated from short-term creep property data on 1CrMoV steel and these estimated models were then used to predict the known longer-term creep properties of this steel. It was found that the CDM approach yielded predicted times to failure that were wholly inadequate. The 6-θ approach was best for predicting long term times to failure. The best minimum creep rate predictions came from using either the 4-Θ, or the CRISPEN or the Omega technique. Finally, times to small strains were best predicted using the 6-θ and CRISPEN techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, 5 vol.% (TiB + TiC)/Ti-1100 composite was fabricated using in situ techniques. Hot-deformation behavior of the composite was studied by hot compression tests in the temperature range 1,000–1,150 °C under different strain rates. It was found that solid solute C element in Ti matrix has obvious effect on the hot-deformation behavior of the composite by increasing the (α + β)/β transus temperature. Variation in the volume ratio of α/β phase and the effect of reinforcements result in a change in hot-deformation behavior of the composite. The effect of reinforcements on hot deformation behavior of the composite is more obvious in the (α + β) phase field than in the β phase field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is of great interest for economical and security reasons to understand the compressive properties of underground cemented paste backfill. In this paper, the stress–strain behaviours of cemented paste backfill (CPB) subjected to uniaxial compression and conventional triaxial tests are presented and discussed. The effect of CPB basic components, strength, ageing and confining pressure on the deformation behaviour of CPB are evaluated and discussed. The results show that the stress–strain behaviour of CPB is strongly influenced by the confinement, the age and strength of CPB, and its components. The increase in confining pressure leads to a change in the mode of failure, in the stiffness, and an increase in the strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polymer nanocomposites are particle-filled polymers in which at least one dimension of the dispersed particles is in the nanometer range. Dispersing nanosize particles in a polymer matrix induces superior mechanical properties compared to traditional macro fillers. Nanolevel reinforcement also affects the tribological properties and needs to be clearly understood before using in practical applications. Friction and wear characteristics of Nylon 6 nanocomposites under dry sliding conditions are reported in this paper. Nylon 6 with 5% organoclay was prepared by melt intercalation technique. The tensile behaviour is evaluated according to ASTM standards. A pin-on-disc type tribometer is used for evaluating the friction and wear behaviour. It is found that the Nylon 6 nanocomposites have superior tribological properties than unfilled polymer. Formation of uniform tenacious transfer layer by Nylon 6 nanocomposite on the counterface contributes to the reduction in coefficient of friction and specific wear rate. The present study describes a model to predict fatigue S-N behavior, and thus fatigue life, of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics by using a fracture mechanics approach. The model assumes the presence of an inherent initial flaw in the molded plastic parts and thus ignores crack initiation contributions. In this paper we describe how fatigue crack propagation rate data were obtained for the same three glass fiber reinforced plastics whose S-N behavior was previously described in detail. Using the measured constants from the crack growth data, and corresponding S-N data for uncracked specimens, the validity of the single initial flaw hypothesis was evaluated. From the analyzed results it is concluded that accurate S-N predictions are possible using this simple fracture mechanics model for some materials. The best results are obtained for glass filled polyamide, PA (nylon 66) and polycarbonate, PC; however, with polybutylene terephthalate, PBT, predictions were poor. It is also shown that S-N data for different glass fiber orientations can be predicted by combining the single flaw model with predicted fatigue crack propagation rate measurements. The latter are calculated from a generalized crack growth rate expression utilizing the strain energy release rate fracture mechanics parameter, which was previously described. In a bending load test for brittle materials, such as ceramics for spacecraft and aircraft, decreasing the number of test specimens required is a crucial problem. This paper discusses the effectiveness of using the information of both fracture stress and fracture location to decrease the number of specimens required to obtain the same precision as the Weibull estimator. The following results were obtained: It was found that by adding the fracture location information, the precision of the Weibull parameter estimation under the optimal design became 1.5–1.9 times better compared with the case of using only the fracture stresses. This means the number of samples necessary to attain the same precision becomes 1/1.5–1/1.9. The synthesis and microwave characterization of glass ceramic in the quaternary phase field of the MgO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system synthesized by sol-gel method have been investigated in this paper. The glass powder was obtained by calcining the MgO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 xerogel, which was prepared from Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate (Mg(NO3)2·6H2O), Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate (Al(NO3)3·9H2O), Calcium nitrate tetrahydrate (Ca(NO3)2·4H2O), and tetraethylortho silicate (TEOS). The powder was characterized by differential thermal analysis, thermogravimety and X-ray diffraction. The calcined powder was pressed, sintered at different temperatures, and then the sintered sample was studied with scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction patterns, and microwave properties measurement.
