In the domain of global socio-economic dynamics, the pivotal role of food production (FP) cannot be overstated. It constitutes the bedrock of fundamental human necessities while being inexorably linked with critical aspects such as economic expansion, societal equilibrium, and geopolitical interplays. The multifaceted nature of FP appears through its direct impact on macroeconomic indicators and its latent influence on international relations and policy-making. This critical nexus underscores the imperative for a comprehensive understanding and strategic management of food production processes to sustain and enhance global socio-economic stability and growth. Investigating the nexus between green finance (GF) and FP is pivotal for ensuring national security and promoting sustainable economic development. This research thus paper examines GF's impact on FP in China as outlined in the 2017 green finance policies. It employs the difference-in-differences (DID) method and analyzes a balanced panel dataset comprising 282 cities in China from 2009 to 2020. The results show that GF has an inhibitory effect on FP, and this remains valid after a range of reliability checks, including parallel trend assessments and placebo tests. Further findings of transmission mechanism analysis indicate that non-agricultural factors and financial exclusion are critical for GF's inhibitory effect on FP. Heterogeneity analyses show that GF's inhibitory effect on FP is more pronounced in the main food-producing areas, the main food-marketing areas, and cities with better infrastructure. This study examined the relationship between government environmental governance (GEG) and regional green development. The findings suggest that GEG boosts green innovation by promoting the "innovation compensation effect" while inhibiting regional green development due to increased environmental costs, supported by the "compliance cost effect". The relationship between GEG and regional green development is moderated by economic development and environmental pollution in an inverted U-shaped pattern. When economic development and environmental pollution are at lesser levels, the positive effect of GEG amplifies as economic growth and environmental pollution ascend. However, if economic growth and environmental pollution continue to escalate, the positive impact of GEG will lose its strength. In low-carbon pilot cities, GEG negatively affects regional green development, whereas the opposite effect is seen in non-pilot cities. Regardless, there is an inverted U-shaped moderating impact of economic development or environmental pollution in both low-carbon pilot and non-pilot cities, yet the inflection point varies across regions. This paper offers an original perspective by creating a theoretical link between green development and environmental governance and emphasizes the significance of a nonlinear viewpoint when examining the relationship between variables in the regional green development process, thereby expanding our understanding of green development phenomena. The climate crisis is recognized as one of the world's most serious concerns, posing a threat to environmental, social, and economic growth. However, previous work has failed to address the dynamic effects through which economic growth may affect green growth and climate crisis. In this research, we take a closer look at the impact of carbon emissions, eco-innovation adoption, and international collaboration on economic growth and the influence of economic growth on green growth. This paper used the generalized method of moments (GMM) for 54 African countries from 2010 to 2019, allied with an imbalanced panel of 540 observations. This paper finds a positive relationship between carbon emissions, eco-innovation international cooperation, and economic growth with p-values lower than 0.047. Our study discovers economic growth's robust and positive impact on green growth with a p-value of 0.009. This research finds a three-pronged mediating effect of economic growth between its driving factors and green growth. Lastly, this paper furnishes new visions into the argument over economic growth versus green growth. It informs policymakers of the need to pay attention to the growing effect of eco-innovation driving factors on attaining sustainable and greener growth and climate crisis mitigation. Climate change has steadily gained attention as the global economy has grown more quickly, preventing continued high-quality economic growth. In this context, the eco-innovation concept has recently risen to the top of the list of academic research topics since it is a crucial tool that combines reduced environmental effects with a favourable socioeconomic impact. Nevertheless, the environmental situation is not improving despite the increasing eco-innovation level. From one perspective, instead of concentrating on how eco-innovation lessens carbon emissions, this research explores the indirect effect of carbon emissions on the GDP-eco-innovation nexus. From another perspective, since FDI might lessen harmful pollution, this research analyses the indirect effect of FDI on the economic growth-eco-innovation nexus. Therefore, this paper highlights the relationship between eco-innovation and economic growth (GDP), considering the dual mediating roles of carbon emissions and FDI. First, we examine the effects of GDP on eco-innovation activities in nine MENA countries from 2000 to 2019 using the geographic Durbin model based on spatial panel data. Second, this paper analysed the dual mediating effect of carbon emissions and FDI using the spatial stepwise regression model. The findings of this paper are as follows: (i) GDP positively impacts eco-innovation activities, and (ii) carbon emissions and FDI mediate the GDP-eco-innovation nexus. Therefore, GDP, FDI, and carbon emissions are significant drivers of eco-innovation. Due to the immense pressure of environmental pollution, economic growth and energy usage, green growth is recognized as the fundamental development strategy in Europe. This paper assesses environmental efficiency (ENE) of 54 industries from 28 European countries across the three sectors of an economy over the 2000–2014 period using a non-radial directional distance function (DDF). The aim of this study is to shed light and provide a deeper understanding of the different levels of technological heterogeneity that exist among industries by incorporating the metafrontier approach under distinct sector and country-specific production frontiers. The results reveal that industries present higher levels of environmental efficiency within their sectors while manufacturing industries achieve the lowest progress in environmental efficiency. A sustainable economy through the rational spatial expansion of coastal areas is an increasingly essential global topic. This paper aims to explore the mechanism by which supporting cities influence the spatial expansion of economic development zones (EDZs) in 264 coastal EDZs of China during 1995–2020. Meanwhile, the effects of variations in the distance between supporting cities and coastal EDZs and different city scales are considered. The results provide new explanations for realizing the sustainable development of the coastal economy by planning EDZs at a suitable location from the supporting city. The supporting cities' economic strength can significantly contribute to the spatial expansion of coastal EDZs. The influence shows a distance decay law when the distance is less than 47.692 km, between 47.692 and 58.039 km, and greater than 58.039 km, with impact coefficients of 0.479, 0.393, and 0.212, respectively. The average spatial scale of coastal EDZs varies in an "inverted U–shape" with increasing distance. The average spatial scale of the urban general radiation type (47.692 km ≤ distance <58.039 km) is the largest. Supporting cities' scale affects the economic radiation range of supporting cities. The results suggest three implications for the future development of coastal EDZs. 1) Building the EDZ while incorporating practical development needs; 2) Scientifically planning the spatial layout of EDZs; 3) The synergistic development of supporting cities, transportation hubs, and EDZs. Degrowth and post-growth economics has emerged as a particularly fruitful approach in the debates about the reorientation of economies in the Global North towards environmental sustainability, equality, need satisfaction and democracy. This perspective promotes a planned reduction of energy and resource use in the Global North to limit environmental pressures and global inequalities and improving well-being. Yet, the specifics of this "design" are not precisely delineated. On the one hand, there is a wide acceptance, at the abstract, most general, even definitional level, that degrowth involves planning or amounts to a planned transition. On the other hand, there is strikingly little explicit engagement with, debate on, and research into what exactly "planning beyond growth" could look like. This gap urgently needs to be addressed. By exploring the degrowth-planning nexus, this paper seeks to lay a foundation for this effort. First, it identifies in the degrowth/postgrowth literature the obstacles and the opportunities for further engagement with planning. The significance of environmental quality for the movement of human capital and economic development is growing. This study utilizes the difference-in-difference (DID) approach to analyze the effects of the implementation of new ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) on economic development and investigate its underlying mechanism. The research indicates that the NAAQS promotes urban economic growth, and this impact tends to progressively intensify over time. According to the analysis of the mechanism, the NAAQS had a significant impact on the city's human capital, which in turn contributed to economic growth. The analysis of heterogeneity indicates that the NAAQS promotes economic growth primarily in the eastern region, in large and medium-sized cities, and in cities where the government pays more attention to environmental protection. Environmental pollution is an essential constraint to the sustainable growth of regional economy. This paper uses the super efficiency slacks-based measure data envelopment analysis (SBM-DEA) model to measure the efficiency of sustainable economic growth (ESEG) in the European Union (EU) and applies the spatial econometric model to explore the impact of environmental regulation intensity (ERI) on ESEG in the EU. The results show that the ESEG in the EU shows an N-shaped growth trend and the spatial pattern of "Western Europe > Eastern Europe > Central Europe > Northern Europe > Southern Europe" from 2001 to 2019. The impact of ERI on the ESEG in the EU presents a "U" shape, indicating that increasing ERI first reduces ESGE, and after reaching the turning point of ESGE, continuing to increase ERI will promote ESGE. Further analysis shows the ERI have spatial spillover effect on the ESEG, while the spatial spillover effect in the eastern and western regions of the EU is different. Improving the ERI in the western region is not only conducive to the ESEG of the country but also has a positive spillover effect on neighboring countries. However, the spatial agglomeration effect in the eastern region is not significant. In addition to environmental regulation, labor & capital structure, research and development (R&D) expenditure, GDP per capita and trade value have a significant impact on the ESGE of a country and neighboring countries. Bearing in mind the devastating nature of climate change, the question of how climate change affects economic growth is becoming increasingly important. The aim of this paper is to answer this question by eliminating the most important methodical shortcoming of the available literature. The analysis is based on an advanced plug-in model averaging procedure that allows taking into account a very large number of potentially important growth determinants. The results of the analysis show that the growth of CO 2 and CH 4 emissions by 1%, increases on average the economic growth rate by 0.00132 and 0.00537 percentage points, respectively. In addition, an increase in surface temperature change by one degree Celsius results in an average increase in the rate of economic growth by 0.865 percentage points. Finally, increasing the number of climate-related disasters by one leads to an average increase in the economic growth rate of 0.115 percentage points. The obtained findings also reveal the impact of climate change is very heterogeneous across countries. The pursuit of sustainable development has become a prevalent goal in numerous countries. Therefore, renewable energy development is deemed the prime alternative, as it not only curtails CO2 emissions but also stimulates economic prosperity. Hence, there is a need to investigate rational options for renewable energy development. This paper utilises a research framework that combines linear and non-linear modelling. The specific results are as follows. The study's findings reveal that wind, solar and hydro energy can each promote economic growth and lower carbon emissions. Nevertheless, wind energy exhibits the most effective reduction in emissions, followed by solar energy, and lastly, hydro energy. When it comes to promoting economic development, hydro energy proves to be the most effective, followed by wind energy and then solar energy. Additionally, a panel threshold model is utilised to assess further the CO 2 reduction for solar, wind, and hydro energy across a range of economic levels. The results indicate a double threshold effect for wind energy, whereby the effectiveness of CO 2 suppression initially increases and then decreases as the economic level rises. In contrast, the use of solar power displays a sole threshold effect that incentivizes CO 2 emissions at sub-threshold economic levels, yet significantly curbs them beyond it. Similarly, hydro energy also demonstrates a single threshold effect, but lacks statistical significance below the established threshold and actually heightens carbon emissions above it. Our observations can assist in creating sustainable renewable energy development strategies. This study examines the impact of innovation and tourism development on the sustainable development of the G7 economies. Panel data from 2000 to 2019 was analyzed for cross-sectional dependency, and a series of panel unit root tests were used to confirm the variables' unit root properties. Pedroni and Kao's tests confirm the cointegration relationship among the variables. The fully modified OLS and dynamic OLS results show that higher economic prosperity and lower environmental pollution are associated with innovation as measured in scientific publications and patents, highlighting the importance of innovation. The results highlight the positive significant impact of tourism arrivals on pollution reduction and economic expansion, which mark the steps for sustainable development. The study finds further evidence that asylum refugees did not positively contribute to economic prosperity, nor were they active in the environmental correction plans of the countries. The level of education provides strong evidence supporting sustainable development by encouraging economic growth and discouraging environmental degradation. Overall, the results recommend raising the level of innovation, tourism development, and higher technical education for the sustainable development of the G7 economies. Mining industry emission reduction is an important way to achieve the 2060 carbon neutrality target in China. Decoupling economic development from CO 2 emissions is the main strategy to reduce emissions from the mining industry. However, no studies have investigated the decoupling state and drivers of the Chinese mining industry. This paper is based on panel data of the mining industry and its subsectors during 2002–2016. The Tapio decoupling model was constructed to analyze the decoupling state of economic development and CO 2 emissions. The LMDI model was developed to decompose the drivers of the decoupling state. The results show that: (1) The CO 2 emission intensity of the mining industry decreased significantly from 1.63 tons per 10,000 yuan in 2002 to about 0.27 tons per 10,000 yuan in 2016. (2) The Chinese mining industry shows an inverted U-shaped decoupling relationship between CO 2 emissions and economic growth. Specifically, the change trend of decoupling state of Mining and Washing of Coal (MWC) also presents an inverted U-shape. Mining and Processing of Nonmetal Ores (MPNO) performs the best during the study period. Extraction of Petroleum and Natural Gas (EPNG) shows the largest change in decoupling state and the worst performance. (3) Overall, the economic output effect (CG) is the most important factor that promotes CO 2 emissions and inhibits decoupling. The energy intensity effect (EI) is the main contributor to suppressing CO 2 emissions and promoting decoupling. The energy structure effect (ES) is the most promising influencing factor. (4) There is variability in the role played by different 21 factors in the five subsectors. Specifically, EI inhibits decoupling in MWC but promotes decoupling in EPNG、Mining and Processing of Ferrous Metal Ores (MPFMO) and MPNO. ES inhibits decoupling in MWC and MPFMO but promotes decoupling in MPNFMO, while it has little effect on decoupling in EPNG and MPNO. Frugal innovation can help to foster sustainability and address global challenges, like building economic growth, addressing various social needs, and protecting the environment. However, if one wants to measure the sustainability impacts of frugal innovation or enable companies to make empirically informed decisions between frugal and alternative innovation, the question of how to assess these empirical impacts arises. The main objectives of this paper are the identification of approaches and indicators for assessing the sustainability impacts of frugal innovation and the analysis of empirical findings relating to prior assessments. To this end, a systematic literature review was conducted, which identified 15 texts, and a qualitative content analysis was employed to evaluate their contents. From these analyses two main approaches for assessment emerged. First, the assessment based on the triple bottom line or the dimensions of sustainability (ecological, social, and economic). Second, assessment against the Sustainability Development Goals. In the identified texts, the sustainability dimensions are preferred over the Sustainable Development Goals for assessing the sustainability impacts of frugal innovation. From the 15 identified texts, 13 use qualitative indicators and two quantitative (conceptual) indicators. To answer the research question of the paper, a set of 47 qualitative indicators relating to integrated dimensions of sustainability for the assessment of the sustainability impacts of frugal innovation is proposed. In addition, this paper presents new insights relating to the empirical evidence of sustainability impacts of frugal innovation. Approximately 60% of 334 empirical findings from 70 different cases related to the Sustainable Development Goals contribute to the five (socially and economically focused) SDGs 8, 3, 10, 12, and 9. After a transformation to the Triple Bottom Line, these findings contribute predominantly to the economic and social dimensions (in each case 45%), and only slightly to the ecological dimension (the remaining 10%). In turn, 164 empirical results from 77 different cases related to the Triple Bottom Line show an almost similar contribution to all three sustainability dimensions with a small lead of the economic dimension. Nonetheless, in the opinion of the author, these findings confirm other studies, that from an empirical perspective, frugal innovation can be described as inherently socially and economically sustainable and ecological sustainability is mostly not the primary focus. With the rapid economic growth, people's need for environment and atmospheric qualities is getting higher. The Chinese government is taking active measures to deal with it, and the scientific evaluation of atmospheric emission efficiency is necessary for atmospheric environment management. Concerning this reason, this paper uses the non-radial DEA model and the PS (Phillips and Sul) convergence test to study the atmospheric emission efficiency and spatial convergence characteristics in China and analyzes the changing trends and transfer path of atmospheric emission efficiency from a dynamic perspective. We conclude that (1) the overall level of atmospheric emission efficiency in China is low, and further improvement can be done; (2) there is a positive relationship between atmospheric emission efficiency and regional economic development; (3) there are obvious characteristics of unbalanced distribution and regional distribution of atmospheric emission efficiency; (4) the transfer path of atmospheric emission efficiency shows a decreasing trend year by year, which indicates that China's atmospheric environment is gradually being improved. A comprehensive understanding of the impact of renewable/non-renewable energy consumption on ecological quality and economic growth can serve to the sustainability of energy, ecology, and economy. This paper provides a new perspective of the comprehensive system of the 3E model, and introduces indicator of social factor to examine the non-linear effects of urbanization on energy, economy, and the environment. A threshold panel regression model is developed using the data of 120 countries in the last 20 years. In the proposed model, renewable energy and non-renewable energy are explanatory variables, economic growth and ecological footprint are explained variables, and urbanization are threshold variable. Non-linear relationships are concretized and quantified in the research of global and different income groups. The results show that global renewable energy can promote economic growth while improving the environment. As the urbanization rate increases, the negative effect of renewable energy on the ecological footprint first weakens and then increases, and the positive coefficient on the economy maintains a growth trend. Non-renewable energy has a more obvious positive effect on economic growth, but it increases the ecological footprint. The development of urbanization strengthens its promotion of the economy and reduces its pressure on the environment. From the perspective of different income groups, renewable energy does not always suppress the ecological footprint. The energy transition reduces economic growth in the initial stages of urbanization in certain regions. After crossing the threshold, the coefficient changes of different income groups have similarities and differences. Based on the conclusions, some recommendations are put forward, including promoting the transformation of energy consumption structure, improving energy efficiency and accelerating the process of urbanization. The model in this paper is suitable for investigating the nonlinear impact of urbanization on the 3E system through panel data, and can provide theoretical support for studying the threshold effect of a country or economy. This paper examines the asymmetric and long-run effect of energy productivity on the quality of the environment in Finland. Finland, as one of the Nordic countries, is a major contributor to the global drive to achieve decarbonization by 2050. In effect, this study seeks to contribute to the strides by querying the extent to which shocks in energy productivity make or mar the sustainability of the Finland environment from 1990:Q1 to 2019:Q4. The other impacts of financial development, economic growth, and trade openness are considered in the model estimated by using the novel hidden panel cointegration and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) methodology. The results reveal a significant asymmetric equilibrium cointegration relationship among the variables over long-run time horizons; energy productivity utilization enhances the quality of the environment in Finland over the long run while trade openness, financial development, and economic growth contribute to environmental degradation in Finland in the long term. In particular, a 1% positive and negative fluctuation in energy productivity lowers carbon emissions by 1.79442% and 0.84799% in the long term. Whereas 1% change in trade openness, financial development, and economic growth trigger CO 2 emissions (CO 2 E) by 1.15298%, 0.271365%, and 2.93402% in Finland's economies. The results of the frequency domain causality model corroborate the NARDL results. On the basis of these empirical findings, this study suggests that policymakers in Finland should consider the asymmetric behavior among these variables in setting their trade, environmental, growth, and energy policies. However, the previous rough development model led to a certain degree of imbalance in the industrial structure (IS), which had impact on environment pollution (EP). Based on the existing problems of industrial pollution in Henan, it is still necessary to explore whether the evolution of IS had impact on EP or not. Thus, firstly, the paper used the latest available data of the whole Henan, the prefecture-level cities and the different types of industries from 2008 to 2019 to measure the temporal and spatial evolution of IS using the IS rationalization index, the IS advanced index and the IS change index. Secondly, based on the three indicators of the IS evolution and the comprehensive index of EP, multiple linear regression models and mediation effect models were constructed to assess the impact of the IS evolution on EP. The results showed that the economic growth of industrial sectors presented the characteristics of the structure optimization. An important goal of circular economy strategies is the extension of product lifetimes, under the assumption that this will deliver reductions in materials, energy use and waste. More broadly, longer lifetimes might counter the "broken windows fallacy" on which much of economic growth is based. The aim of this paper is to elaborate on this assumption rather than take it for granted. What are the systemic effects of policies aimed at saving materials? Who will benefit from them? To answer these research questions, we start connecting two issues that are often handled separately, despite being closely interlinked, namely (i) working time reduction and (ii) (over)production and waste generation. Trends in work indicators and material consumption in the EU15 countries confirm that higher material efficiency has not delivered the hoped-for benefits, thereby supporting the rest of our analysis. The conceptual framework that we propose shows that efforts towards material savings might allow reductions in working time per inhabitant while keeping labour compensation unchanged. This paper, firstly, investigates the relationship between clean energy and economic growth using satellite remote sensing data to proxy economic activities. Then, this paper constructs a spatial autoregressive model, spatial error model, and spatial Durbin model to study the spatial spillover effects of financial development and clean energy. Further, this paper adopts the difference-in-differences (DID) model and the propensity score matching-DID (PSM-DID) method to conduct quasi-natural experiments on clean energy and examine whether China's energy policy can promote clean energy, thereby promoting economic growth. The analysis results reveal a positive correlation between clean energy and economic growth; local financial development promotes clean energy in the region but negatively impacts the clean energy in surrounding areas. Moreover, the findings confirm a significant positive relationship between the "policy treatment effect" and clean energy. Environmental regulation provides new constraints and opportunities for economic growth. Based on OLG (Overlapping Generation) model, this paper re-characterizes the relationship between the intensity of environmental regulations and economic growth rate from two perspectives: technical level and healthy human capital. By using the panel data of 31 provinces and cities in China from 2004 to 2017, empirical tests were conducted through the mediation effect method and the contrast groups of OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regression experiment to support the theoretical part. The results show that: (1) The non-linear relationship between environmental regulations and economic growth rate shows an "inverted U-shaped" curve, where the economic growth rate displays a correlation with the intensity of environmental regulations from positive to negative; (2) The internal action path of environmental regulations on economic growth shows the differentiated characteristics according to different industrial types. Specifically, under the established intensity of environmental regulation, the effect of regulatory policies on labor-intensive enterprises is more based on the technological level, while it is more inclined to the path of healthy human capital for capital-intensive enterprises. As a new form of industrial organization, there is still a lack of research on how industrial symbiotic agglomeration affects green economic growth. To fill this research gap, this paper analyzes the impact mechanism of industrial symbiotic agglomeration on green economic growth from the perspective of energy efficiency, waste recycling, and green technology innovation. Based on the data of Chinese cities from 2004 to 2019, we use the spatial difference-in-differences approach for empirical testing. The research concludes: (1) Industrial symbiotic agglomeration can both significantly promote green economic growth and have a spillover effect on neighboring cities. (2) The specific spillover effects are divided into three cases. Diffusion effect (within 150 km), siphon effect (150 km–750 km), no significant spatial effect (over 750 km). (3) The promotion and spillover effects of industrial symbiotic agglomeration on green economic growth can only be brought into full play when a certain threshold is reached. The local promotion effect requires the area of the symbiotic agglomeration area to be greater than 106 km2, while the spillover effect requires a larger scale (greater than 393.2 km2) for it to manifest itself. The goal of economic expansion, which ignores social welfare and environmental restrictions, has been supplanted in the business environment. The paper investigates how corporate environmental sustainability affects sundry parts of a company's performance. The study question is dichotomized into two segments. Firstly, examine the effect of selected dimensions, such as Economic, Social, Technological, and Organizational factors, on Corporate Environment Sustainability. Secondly, to validate and prove the mediating effect of CES on firm performance with selected manifests. A total of 390 respondents from SMEs were analyzed systematically. The synergy of Smart-PLS and Artificial Neural Network determines the impact of environmental sustainability on the various dimensions of a firm's performance that yielding a novel insight that would render vital benefit to stakeholders while drawing the policies related to sustainable development. The findings reveal that corporate environmental sustainability plays a significant role in shaping the relationships between technological, organizational, environmental, and social factors and SMEs' operating performance. The study is the first to empirically validate and evaluate the multimodal framework by extending TOE and TBL theorem. This theoretical nexus can be a pathfinder for policymakers, administrators, and managers to enhance SMEs' performance. Better digging the sustainable development path of the top five energy consumers (China, the United States, India, Japan and Russia) can serve both domestic economy and global economy to achieve coordinated development with the ever-increasing energy demand. This work has made the following efforts: (1) the Tapio decoupling model was employed to determine the decoupling states between energy consumption and economy; (2) based on the extended Kaya formula and the LMDI method, this work focused on measuring the impact of technological factors and urbanization factor on energy consumption; (3) the LMDI method and the Tapio decoupling model were combined to measure the impact degree of influencing factors on decoupling indicators. The main findings show that from 2001 to 2018: (1) Japan was the country with the most year of strong decoupling, followed by the United States, which indicates that the decoupling status of developed countries was better than that of developing countries. (2) The driving forces behind the energy consumption growth are mainly the effects of R&D scale and urbanization, while the main factors that hinder energy consumption growth were technological factors, including energy intensity effect and R&D efficiency effect. (3) Energy intensity effect was the main driving force for the decoupling process, and the R&D efficiency effect was the biggest obstacle to decoupling energy consumption from economic growth. This paper examines the nexus between renewable energy consumption (REC) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in G7 countries. To this end, we analyse data from 1980 to 2020 employing Toda and Yamamoto (1995) time causality test, Lemmens et al. (2008) frequency causality test and Hatemi-J's (2012) asymmetric causality approach. The findings differ across countries and are as follows. The conservative hypothesis is validated for the US and Canada. Specifically, we find significant and positive causal effect from GDP to REC in the long-term horizons (periods greater than 15 years for the US and 7 years for Canada). The growth hypothesis is confirmed for Germany. Precisely, significant and positive causal impact is shown from REC to GDP in the long-run horizons (periods longer than 7 years). The neutrality hypothesis is supported for France, the UK, Italy and Japan as there is no significant causal link at any time horizon. This is likely because the clean energy consumption does not reach a threshold beyond which it will start to have considerable interaction with economic growth. Financial agglomeration is a key way to promote the green transformation of the global economy and environmental governance. The existing literature mainly analyzed the impact of financial agglomeration on economic development, but rarely examines its comprehensive impact on economic growth and environmental governance considering spatial spillover effects. Based on the perspective of spatial spillover effects, this paper uses panel data of 285 cities above the prefecture-level in China to examine the impact and mechanism of financial agglomeration on green development. The results show that: (1) During the study period, financial agglomeration and green development in China are significantly different in directions of spatial distribution and expansion, but the spatial correlation between the two is relatively high. (2) Financial agglomeration can exert significant spatial spillover effects on green development. (3) Financial agglomeration has more obvious positive spatial spillover effects on green development of cities in the servitization stage or with high administrative level. (4) Industrial structure upgrading effect, labor upgrading effect and technological innovation effect are the main paths that financial agglomeration affects green development. Presently, economic sciences share a conviction that creative capital is one of the main factors in economic growth. Both theorists and practitioners agree on the role of creativity as a source of competitive advantage on the micro- and macroeconomic scale. The claim that the greatest socio-economic achievements emerge in those territorial areas where creative capital develops seems justified. Consequently, the study would allow for a demonstration of the fact that contemporary development depends on the proper generation of that capital as well as the regional background supporting its absorption from the perspective of sustainable development. The paper reviews research into the influence of cognitive, theoretical and methodological, as well as empirical issues related to the development of creative capital as well as the determination of relationships regarding which of its subindices determine sustainable development to the greatest extent on the national and regional levels. The theoretical publications analysed provided strong evidence to support claims pertaining to interrelations between creative capital components and sustainable development. Thus, in order to be able to identify the areas of such relationships, the research part of the study involves several stages of analysis, namely: overall creative capital analysis and analysis concerning particular creative capital components, i.e. technology, tolerance, talent and culture, and their relationship with sustainable development at the national as well as regional level. Empirical analysis was performed using analyses of frequency, basic descriptive analyses including the Shapiro-Wilk test, Pearson's r coefficient correlation, regression, Spearman's ρ rank correlation and comparative analysis. Our research results demonstrated that for all regions altogether (the whole of Poland) sustainable development had a strong relationship with three dimensions of creative capital: talent, technology and culture, whereas no such relationship existed with the tolerance subindex. The research results obtained are particularly important to countries such as Poland which are not among the top ten of the world's regions showing significant growth of creative capital or sustainable development. The compatibility of renewable energy consumption and economic growth is the key to both the development of renewable energy, and to sustainable economic development. This paper explores the influence mechanism of renewable energy and economic growth from the two dimensions of natural resources and institutional environment. Resource dependence and anticorruption regulations are mainly selected as the intermediary variables. The hypothesis is tested by using the panel data (from 2002 to 2018) of 104 selected countries and regions, and by conducting regression estimation. On the whole, this study finds that a positive relationship exists between renewable energy and economic growth. The group discussion results show that, for high-income countries, the relationship between renewable energy and the economy is inconsistent under different thresholds. Where, the role of renewable energy in promoting the economy is significant. For the middle-income group, the relationship between renewable energy and economic growth is not the same in the resource dependence and anticorruption regulation models. However, for the low-income groups, no matter which model is used, a U-shaped relationship emerges between renewable energy and economic growth. Under the downward pressure of the economy, China's extensive economic growth that relies on factor input is difficult to sustain. Scientific analysis of the industrial restructuring and energy consumption has become the key to realizing China's economic growth from high-speed to high-quality. Based on the fully-modified least square method and panel vector error correction model, this paper explores the equilibrium relationship and Granger causality among the industrial restructuring, energy consumption and economic growth at aggregated and disaggregated levels. The results show that: (1) The effect of industrial structure rationalization on economic growth is higher than that of industrial structure upgrading. When emphasizing industrial structure upgrade, the more reliable industrial policy to achieve China's sustainable economic growth is to pay attention to the industrial structure rationalization, especially in western China. The implementation of environmental regulation needs to consider not only pollution control but also its impact on economic growth. Using the provincial panel data in China from 2000 to 2017, this paper constructs dynamic spatial panel models and employs system GMM approach to evaluate the nonlinear and spatial effects of environmental regulation on economic growth and CO 2 emissions, respectively. The results suggest that, first, environmental regulation presents a significant "N"-shaped effect on economic growth and an inverted "N" effect on CO 2 emissions at the national level and in the eastern and central regions; while the effects are both"N"-shaped in the western region. Second, environmental regulation presents significant spatial effects on economic growth and CO 2 emissions. The enhancement of regional environmental regulation helps the economic growth and CO 2 emissions reduction in neighboring provinces at the national level and in the eastern and central regions, however, the spatial effects are opposite in the western provinces, proving the co-exists of "race to the top" and "race to the bottom" strategies of environmental regulation competition among China's regions. This paper aims to examine the causal relations between economic growth, electricity consumption, and urbanization indicators. Heterogeneous panel data techniques are performed to help shed light on the importance of the heterogeneity among three economic regions within China from 2000 to 2017. Our results show that the three indicators are all stationary and cointegrated after the first difference. Heterogeneity of the Granger causality is found between these three variables varies across the eastern, central, and western economic regions in China. In the long run, the eastern region presents a similar trend as the national level that long-run Granger causality of the three variables is found. Conversely, there is a unidirectional long-run causal relationship from economic growth to electricity consumption in the central region, while there is a bi-directional long-run causal relationship between economic growth and electricity consumption in the western region in China. Our empirical findings highlight the "urbanization ladder" effect which implies that as development, urbanization factor in the eastern region may play a promotion role in the tri-variate system when the urbanization reaches a higher level, while it may lack the influence in the central and western regions of China. Environmental policies are a significant driver of change towards the achievement of sustainability. Policies impact on the environment through direct and indirect effects. Indirect effects pertain to the effect of innovation and invention mechanisms. The paper analyses those direct and indirect effects by focusing on different measures of environmental productivity. Econometric analysis on a long macroeconomic panel dataset is used to convey original insights, and as a platform for policy assessments. Results show that environmental policies adopted by countries may boost environmental productivity performances both directly and indirectly, through innovation, across various environmental dimensions. The increasing stringency of environmental policy, which has been observed over the last decades, is a crucial driver of change for climate actions, waste and resource efficiency, touching upon various SDGs related to responsible consumption and production, economic growth, industry and innovation infrastructures and climate action.
