Sensor networks are used in an increasing number and variety of application areas, like traffic control or river monitoring. Sensors in these networks measure parameters of interest defined by domain experts and send these measurements to a central location for storage, viewing and analysis. Temporal graph data models, whose nodes contain time-series data reported by the sensors, have been proposed to model and analyze these networks in order to take informed and timely decisions on their operation. Temporal paths are first-class citizens in this model and some classes of them have been identified in the literature. Queries aimed at finding these paths are denoted as (temporal) path queries. In spite of these efforts, many interesting problems remain open and, in this work, we aim at answering some of them. More concretely, we characterize the classes of temporal paths that can be defined in a sensor network in terms of the well-known Allen's temporal algebra. We also show that, out of the 8192 possible interval relations in this algebra, only 11 satisfy two desirable properties that we define: transitivity and robustness. We show how these properties and the paths that satisfy them are relevant in practice by means of a real-world use case consisting of an analysis of salinity that appears close to the Scheldt river in Flanders, Belgium, during high tides occurring in the North Sea. The urban road network is a large and complex system characterized by significant heterogeneity arising from different spatial structures and traffic demands. To facilitate effective management and control, it is necessary to partition the road network into homogeneous sub-areas. In this regard, we aim to propose a hybrid method for partitioning sub-areas with intra-area homogeneity, inter-area heterogeneity, and similar sizes, called CSDRA. It is specifically designed for bidirectional road networks with segment weights that encompass traffic flow, speed, or roadside facility evaluation. Based on community detection and spectral clustering, this proposed method comprises four main modules: initial partition, partitioning of large sub-areas, reassignment of small sub-areas, and boundary adjustment. In the preliminary partitioning work, we also design a road network reconstruction method which further helps to enhance the intra-area homogeneity and inter-area heterogeneity of partitioning results. Furthermore, to align with the requirement for comparable work units in practical traffic management and control, we control the similarity in the size of sub-areas by enforcing upper and lower bound constraints on the size of the sub-areas. We verify the outperformance of the proposed method by an experiment on the partitioning of an urban road network in Guangzhou, China, where we employ sidewalk barrier-free score data as segment weights. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of both the road network reconstruction method and the CSDRA proposed in this paper, as they significantly improve the partitioning outcomes compared with other methods using different evaluation indicators corresponding to the partitioning objectives. Finally, we investigate the influence of constraint parameters on the evaluation indicator. Our findings indicate that appropriately configuring these constraint parameters can effectively minimize sub-region size variations while having minimal impact on other aspects. Urbanised city transportation simulation needs a wide range of factors to reflect the influence of certain real-life events accurately. The vehicle composition and the timing of the traffic light signal scheduling play an important role in controlling the traffic flow and facilitate road users, particularly in densely populated urban cities. Since road capacity in urban cities changes throughout the day, an optimal traffic light signal duration might be different. Hence, in this paper, the effect of vehicle composition and traffic light phases on traffic flow during peak and off-peak hours in Georgetown, Penang, one of the highly populated cities in Malaysia, is investigated. Through Agent-Based Modelling (ABM), this complex system is simulated by integrating the driver's behaviour into the model using the GIS and Agent-Based Modelling Architecture (GAMA) simulation platform. The result of predicted traffic flow varies significantly depending on the vehicle composition while the duration of the traffic signal timing has little impact on traffic flow during peak hours. However, during off-peak hour, it is suggested that 20 s duration of green light provides the highest flow compared to 30 s and 40 s duration of green light. This concludes that the planning for traffic light phasing should consider multiple factors since the vehicle composition and traffic light timing for an effective traffic flow varies according to the volume of road users. This research is a pilot study to develop a maritime traffic control system that supports the decision-making process of control officers, and to evaluate the usability of a prototype tool developed in this study. The study analyzed the movements of multiple vessels through automatic identification system (AIS) data using one of the existing methodologies in GIScience, the RElative MOtion (REMO) approach. The REMO approach in this study measured the relative speed, delta-speed, and the azimuth of each vessel per time unit. The study visualized the results on electronic navigational charts in the prototype tool developed, V-REMO. In addition, the study conducted a user evaluation to assess the user interface (UI) of V-REMO and to future enhance the usability. The general usability of V-REMO, the data visualization, and the readability of information in the UI were tested through in-depth interviews. The results of the user evaluation showed that the users needed changes in the size, position, colors, and transparency of the trajectory symbols in the digital chartmap view of V-REMO for better readability and easier manipulation. The users also indicated a need for multiple color schemes for the spatial data and more landmark information about the study area in the chartmap view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transportation networks are used in many application areas, like traffic control or river monitoring. For this purpose, sensors are placed in strategic points in the network and they send their data to a central location for storage, viewing and analysis. Recent work proposed graph databases to represent transportation networks, since these networks can change over time, a temporal graph data model is required to keep track of these changes. In this model, time-series data are represented as properties of nodes in the network, and nodes and edges are timestamped with their validity intervals. In this paper, we show that transportation networks can be represented and queried using temporal graph databases and temporal graph query languages. Many interesting situations can be captured by the temporal paths supported by this model. To achieve the above, we extend a recently introduced temporal graph data model and its high-level query language T-GQL to support time series in the nodes of the graph, redefine temporal paths and study and implement new kinds of paths, namely Flow paths and Backwards Flow paths. Further, we analyze a real-world case, using a portion of the Yser river in the Flanders' river system in Belgium, where some nodes are equipped with sensors while other ones are not. We model this river as a temporal graph, implement it using real data provided by the sensors, and discover interesting temporal paths based on the electric conductivity parameter, that can be used in a decision support environment, by experts for analyzing water quality across time. In this paper, a new method is proposed to detect traffic regulations at intersections using GPS traces. The knowledge of traffic rules for regulated locations can help various location-based applications in the context of Smart Cities, such as the accurate estimation of travel time and fuel consumption from a starting point to a destination. Traffic regulations as map features, however, are surprisingly still largely absent from maps, although they do affect traffic flow which, in turn, affects vehicle idling time at intersections, fuel consumption, CO 2 emissions, and arrival time. In addition, mapping them using surveying equipment is costly and any update process has severe time constraints. This fact is precisely the motivation for this study. Therefore, its objective is to propose an automatic, fast, scalable, and inexpensive way to identify the type of intersection control (e.g., traffic lights, stop signs). A new method based on summarizing the collective behavior of vehicle crossing intersections is proposed. A modification of a well-known clustering algorithm is used to detect stopping and deceleration episodes. These episodes are then used to categorize vehicle crossing of intersections into four possible traffic categories (p1: free flow, p2: deceleration without stopping events, p3: only one stopping event, p4: more than one stopping event). The percentages of crossings of each class per intersection arm, together with other speed/stop/deceleration features, extracted from trajectories, are then used as features to classify the intersection arms according to their traffic control type (dynamic model). The classification results of the dynamic model are compared with those of the static model, where the classification features are extracted from OpenStreetMap. Finally, a hybrid model is also tested, where a combination of dynamic and static features is used, which outperforms the other two models. For each of the three models, two variants of the feature vector are tested: one where only features associated with a single intersection arm are used (one-arm model) and another where features also from neighboring intersection arms of the same intersection are used to classify an arm (all-arm model). GPS trajectories collected from automotive telematics for insurance purposes go beyond being a collection of points on the map. They are in fact a powerful data source that we can use to extract map and road network properties. While the location of road junctions is readily available, the information about the traffic control element regulating the intersection is typically unknown. However, this information would be helpful, e.g., for contextualizing a driver's behavior. Our focus is to use a map-matched GPS OBD-dongle dataset provided by a Canadian insurance company to classify intersections into three classes according to the type of traffic control element present: traffic light, stop sign, or no sign. We design a convolutional neural network (CNN) for classifying intersections. The network takes as entries, for a defined number of trips, the speed and the acceleration profiles over each segment of one meter on a window around the intersection. Our method outperforms two other competing approaches, achieving 99% overall accuracy. Furthermore, our CNN model can infer the three classes even with as few as 25 trips. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the integration of traffic information (TI) into the routing in the presence of moving obstacles. When traffic accidents occur, the incidents could generate different kinds of hazards (e.g., toxic plumes), which make certain parts of the road network inaccessible. On the other hand, the first responders, who are responsible for management of the traffic incidents, need to be fast and safely guided to the incident place. To support navigation in the traffic network affected by moving obstacles, in this paper, we provide a spatio-temporal data model to structure the information of traffic conditions that is essential for the routing, and present an extended path planning algorithm, named MOAAstar-TI (Moving Obstacle Avoiding A* using Traffic Information), to generate routes avoiding the obstacles. A speed adjustment factor is introduced in the developed routing algorithm, allowing integration of both the information of vehicles and traffic situations to generate routes avoiding the moving obstacles caused by the incidents. Understanding human mobility patterns is of great importance for urban planning, traffic management, and even marketing campaign. However, the capability of capturing detailed human movements with fine-grained spatial and temporal granularity is still limited. In this study, we extracted high-resolution mobility data from a collection of over 1.3 billion geo-located Twitter messages. Regarding the concerns of infringement on individual privacy, such as the mobile phone call records with restricted access, the dataset is collected from publicly accessible Twitter data streams. In this paper, we employed a visual-analytics approach to studying multi-scale spatiotemporal Twitter user mobility patterns in the contiguous United States during the year 2014. Our approach included a scalable visual-analytics framework to deliver efficiency and scalability in filtering large volume of geo-located tweets, modeling and extracting Twitter user movements, generating space-time user trajectories, and summarizing multi-scale spatiotemporal user mobility patterns. We performed a set of statistical analysis to understand Twitter user mobility patterns across multi-level spatial scales and temporal ranges. In particular, Twitter user mobility patterns measured by the displacements and radius of gyrations of individuals revealed multi-scale or multi-modal Twitter user mobility patterns. By further studying such mobility patterns in different temporal ranges, we identified both consistency and seasonal fluctuations regarding the distance decay effects in the corresponding mobility patterns. At the same time, our approach provides a geo-visualization unit with an interactive 3D virtual globe web mapping interface for exploratory geo-visual analytics of the multi-level spatiotemporal Twitter user movements. Traffic conditions are usually characterized from the perspective of travel time or the average vehicle speed in the field of transportation, reflecting the congestion degree of a road network. This article provides a method from a new perspective to characterize traffic conditions; the perspective is based on the heterogeneity of vehicle speeds. A novel measurement, the ratio of areas (RA) in a rank-size plot, is included in the proposed method to capture the heterogeneity. The proposed method can be performed from the perspective of both spatial heterogeneity and temporal heterogeneity, being able to characterize traffic conditions of not only a road network but also a single road. Compared with methods from the perspective of travel time, the proposed method can characterize traffic conditions at a higher frequency. Compared to methods from the perspective of the average vehicle speed, the proposed method takes account of the heterogeneity of vehicle speeds. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been demonstrated with real-life traffic data of Shenzhen (a coastal urban city in China), and the advantage of the proposed RA has been verified by comparisons to similar measurements such as the ht-index and the CRG index. Monitoring vehicular road traffic is a key component of any autonomous driving platform. Detecting moving objects, and tracking them, is crucial to navigating around objects and predicting their locations and trajectories. Laser sensors provide an excellent observation of the area around vehicles, but the point cloud of objects may be noisy, occluded, and prone to different errors. Consequently, object tracking is an open problem, especially for low-quality point clouds. This paper describes a pipeline to integrate various sensor data and prior information, such as a Geospatial Information System (GIS) map, to segment and track moving objects in a scene. We show that even a low-quality GIS map, such as OpenStreetMap (OSM), can improve the tracking accuracy, as well as decrease processing time. A bank of Kalman filters is used to track moving objects in a scene. In addition, we apply non-holonomic constraint to provide a better orientation estimation of moving objects. The results show that moving objects can be correctly detected, and accurately tracked, over time, based on modest quality Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data, a coarse GIS map, and a fairly accurate Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) navigation solution. By applying visual analytics techniques to vehicle traffic data, we found a way to visualize and study the relationships between the traffic intensity and movement speed on links of a spatially abstracted transportation network. We observed that the traffic intensities and speeds in an abstracted network are interrelated in the same way as they are in a detailed street network at the level of street segments. We developed interactive visual interfaces that support representing these interdependencies by mathematical models. To test the possibility of utilizing them for performing traffic simulations on the basis of abstracted transportation networks, we devised a prototypical simulation algorithm employing these dependency models. The algorithm is embedded in an interactive visual environment for defining traffic scenarios, running simulations, and exploring their results. Our research demonstrates a principal possibility of performing traffic simulations on the basis of spatially abstracted transportation networks using dependency models derived from real traffic data. The adaptability of traffic lights in the control of vehicle traffic heavily affects the trafficability of vehicles and the travel efficiency of traffic participants in busy urban areas. Existing studies mainly have focused on the presence of traffic lights, but rarely evaluate the impact of traffic lights by analyzing traffic data, thus there is no solution for practicably and precisely self-regulating traffic lights. To address these issues, we propose a low-cost and fast traffic signal detection and impact assessment framework, which detects traffic lights from GPS trajectories and intersection features in a supervised way, and analyzes the impact range and time of traffic lights from intersection track data segments. The experimental results show that our approach gains the best AUC value of 0.95 under the ROC standard classification and indicates that the impact pattern of traffic lights at intersections is high related to the travel rule of traffic participants. Accurate information of traffic regulators at junctions is important for navigating and driving in cities. However, such information is often missing, incomplete or not up-to-date in digital maps due to the high cost, e.g., time and money, for data acquisition and updating. In this study we propose a crowdsourced method that harnesses the light-weight GPS tracks from commuting vehicles as Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) for traffic regulator detection. We explore the novel idea of detecting traffic regulators by learning the movement patterns of vehicles at regulated locations. Vehicles' movement behavior was encoded in the form of speed-profiles, where both speed values and their sequential order during movement development were used as features in a three-class classification problem for the most common traffic regulators: traffic-lights, priority-signs and uncontrolled junctions. The method provides an average weighting function and a majority voting scheme to tolerate the errors in the VGI data. The sequence-to-sequence framework requires no extra overhead for data processing, which makes the method applicable for real-world traffic regulator detection tasks. The results showed that the deep-learning classifier Conditional Variational Autoencoder can predict regulators with 90% accuracy, outperforming a random forest classifier (88% accuracy) that uses the summarized statistics of movement as features. With the rapid development of urban traffic, accurate and up-to-date road maps are in crucial demand for daily human life and urban traffic control. Recently, with the emergence of crowdsourced mapping, a surge in academic attention has been paid to generating road networks from spatio-temporal trajectory data. However, most existing methods do not explore changing road patterns contained in multi-temporal trajectory data and it is still difficult to satisfy the precision and efficiency demands of road information extraction. Hence, in this paper, we propose a hybrid method to incrementally extract urban road networks from spatio-temporal trajectory data. First, raw trajectory data were partitioned into K time slices and were used to initialize K-temporal road networks by a mathematical morphology method. Then, the K-temporal road networks were adjusted according to a gravitation force model so as to amend their geometric inconsistencies. Finally, road networks were geometrically delineated using the k-segment fitting algorithm, and the associated road attributes (e.g., road width and driving rule) were inferred. Several case studies were examined to demonstrate that our method can effectively improve the efficiency and precision of road extraction and can make a significant attempt to mine the incremental change patterns in road networks from spatio-temporal trajectory data to help with road map renewal. Vehicle detection based on very high-resolution (VHR) remote sensing images is beneficial in many fields such as military surveillance, traffic control, and social/economic studies. However, intricate details about the vehicle and the surrounding background provided by VHR images require sophisticated analysis based on massive data samples, though the number of reliable labeled training data is limited. In practice, data augmentation is often leveraged to solve this conflict. The traditional data augmentation strategy uses a combination of rotation, scaling, and flipping transformations, etc., and has limited capabilities in capturing the essence of feature distribution and proving data diversity. In this study, we propose a learning method named Vehicle Synthesis Generative Adversarial Networks (VS-GANs) to generate annotated vehicles from remote sensing images. The proposed framework has one generator and two discriminators, which try to synthesize realistic vehicles and learn the background context simultaneously. The method can quickly generate high-quality annotated vehicle data samples and greatly helps in the training of vehicle detectors. Experimental results show that the proposed framework can synthesize vehicles and their background images with variations and different levels of details. Compared with traditional data augmentation methods, the proposed method significantly improves the generalization capability of vehicle detectors. Finally, the contribution of VS-GANs to vehicle detection in VHR remote sensing images was proved in experiments conducted on UCAS-AOD and NWPU VHR-10 datasets using up-to-date target detection frameworks. The positive effects of active mobility on mental and physical health as well as on air quality are widely acknowledged. Increasing the share of active travel is therefore an aim in many countries. Providing bicycle-safe infrastructure is one way to promote cycling. Roundabouts are a common traffic infrastructure and are supposed to facilitate safe and smooth traffic flow. However, data on road traffic accidents indicate an over-proportional involvement of cyclists in accidents at roundabouts. In the present study, the influence of roundabout geometry and traffic flow on bicycle accident occurrence was investigated using a logistic regression approach on twelve parameters of N = 294 mostly small- and mini-sized single-lane roundabouts in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland. Average weekday motorized traffic was identified as a major factor in explaining bicycle accident occurrence at roundabouts. Further, the radius of the central island, the location of the roundabout (in town vs. out of town) and the number of legs were significantly related to bicycle accident occurrence. While these results are in general agreement with findings from similar studies, the findings regarding the central island's radius and the number of legs underpin the need for roundabout type-specific studies: Some parameters may not prove relevant in intermediate- to large-sized roundabouts, but become critical in small or mini roundabouts, which are common in Switzerland and numerous in the present sample.
