To evaluate a tablet-based hearing screening game in primary school aged children. To examine the prevalence of middle/outer ear pathology, hearing loss and spatial processing disorder in primary school aged children. The automated hearing test Sound Scouts was used as a screening tool, which measures hearing abnormalities through tests of speech-in-quiet/noise and tone-in-noise. Children who failed the screenings underwent follow up testing with pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, otoscopy, and the Listening in Spatialised Noise-Sentences test. Results of each test were compared to measure efficacy. 1256 children aged 4–13 years from 8 primary schools. 111 children (8.84%) presented with evidence of middle/outer ear pathologies. 21 children (1.67%) had hearing loss in at least one ear. 30 children (2.52%) were diagnosed with spatial processing disorder. False positive rate was 5.01%, indicating that a relatively small proportion of the children who failed the screenings were subsequently shown to have normal auditory function. A game based program testing sound detection and binaural speech processing can be effective in detecting undiagnosed hearing deficits, in large format school-based hearing screenings. Hearing loss is an important health concern in Canada's Arctic. The objective of this research was to provide information on the prevalence of childhood hearing loss in Nunavut. This cross-sectional study involved comprehensive audiologic assessments of school-aged children in six communities to determine overall and community-specific prevalence of hearing loss. Data were collected about hearing aid use and factors affecting use through a parent questionnaire. Assessments were completed for 644 children in kindergarten to grade 6. 124 (19.3%) children had hearing loss of ≥ 30 dB HL at one or more frequencies in at least one ear (93.5% conductive loss). Applying a Canadian prevalence study definition, 148 (23.5%) children had hearing loss. Tympanic membrane perforations were present in 36.8% (n = 28) of children with unilateral and 45.8% (n = 22) with bilateral loss. The prevalence of hearing loss in Canada's North was almost three times that reported for non-indigenous children. One in five school-aged children was found to have hearing loss that is likely to affect classroom learning and social/emotional development. The purpose of this study was to determine the current prevalence of childhood hearing impairment (HI) in Sweden and to compare our data with previous studies from Sweden and other high-income countries. This was a cross-sectional study based on a register of children diagnosed with HI. Our results were compared with prevalence data from 18 studies from Sweden and other high-income countries, covering data collected from 1964 to the present. In December 2017, a total of 1911 out of 524,957 children 0–18 years of age and living in Stockholm County were enrolled in the regional programme for HI intervention. The overall prevalence of unilateral and bilateral HI >20 dB was 3.6/1000. The overall prevalence of bilateral HI >40 dB HL was 1.5/1000, split into age groups the prevalence was 0.4/1000 (<1 year of age), 1/1000 (1–4 years), 1.5/1000 (5–9 years), 1.6/1000 (10–14 years), and 2.14/1000 (15–18 years). From 1 to 18 years of age, the prevalence increased by a factor of 3.5 for moderate to profound HI >40 dB HL (0.7 to 2.4/1000). Objective: To estimate the prevalence of spontaneous tinnitus in 11-year-old children.Design: A prospective UK population-based study. Study sample: A total of 7092 children from the Avon longitudinal study of parents and children (ALSPAC) who attended the hearing session at age 11 years and answered questions about tinnitus.Results: We estimated the prevalence ofanyspontaneous tinnitus as 28.1% (95% CI 27.1, 29.2%), and the prevalence of ‘clinically significant’ tinnitus as 3.1% (95% CI 2.7, 3.5%). Children were less likely to have clinically significant tinnitus if the tinnitus was ‘soft’ rather than ‘loud’ and if continuous rather than intermittent. Clinical significance was more likely if the tinnitus occurred more than once a week. Neither pitch nor length of history were important determinants of clinical significance. Small increases in mean hearing threshold (of up to 2.3 dB HL) were associated with clinically significant tinnitus.Conclusions: Although the prevalence of any tinnitus in 11-year-old children appears high, the small proportion in which this was found to be clinically significant implies that this does not necessarily indicate a large unmet clinical demand. Objective: To determine the association of reported risk factors with hearing loss, and explore the possible contribution of other risk factors that may improve identifying Jordanian children for whom interventions should be provided. Design: A cross-sectional study was performed in 37 hospitals and mother-child clinics from different health sectors in Jordan. The hearing screening protocol was performed in three stages. Data collected as risk factors for infant hearing loss included those on the 2007 Joint Committee on Infant Hearing list as well as other factors believed to be possibly significant. Study sample: All babies born in or attending any of these hospitals or clinics were screened for hearing loss, which included a total of 63 041. Results: Of the 63 042 infants, 966 (1.5%) were confirmed to have significant hearing loss. We identified additional risk factors that were associated with hearing loss in infants. Conclusion: These preliminary data add to the understanding of the epidemiology of hearing loss in Jordan. The presence of at least one JCIH risk factor, admission to NICU for > 5 days, age, birth weight, postnatal hypoxia, and mode of delivery were independently associated with hearing loss. Abstract Objectives: To document the prevalence of clinically normal air conduction thresholds (0.5-4 kHz, bilaterally, ≤20 dB HL) among children and adults in a large audiology service and to estimate the prevalence of auditory processing disorder (APD). Design: Over a period of one year, clinicians implemented their usual protocol and recorded a brief history for those with normal audiometry. Study Sample: The number of people seen by the service was 2924 children (0-16 years old) and 4757 adults (17-100 years old). Results: Adults and school-age children were most commonly referred by their primary care doctor for difficulties listening in noise or following a conversation, and younger children by their home health visitor for speech production problems. Children tended to be referred on to speech pathology or APD clinics whereas adults were discharged. Conclusions: The prevalence of normal cases was 5.1% among the children and 0.9% among all adults. For younger adults (17-60 years, n == 1025), the prevalence was 4.0%. Based on comparison with those referred with hearing loss, we estimate the prevalence of APD among children and adults, defined as listening problems despite normal audiometry, to be about 0.5-1.0% of the general population. Diseño: Por un periodo de 1 año, los clínicos implementaron su protocolo acostumbrado y obtuvieron una historia breve de aquellos con audiometría normal. Muestra: la cantidad de personas vistas en el servicio fueron 2924 niños (0 a 16 años de edad) y 4757 adultos (17 a 100 años de edad). Resultados: Por lo regular, los adultos y los niños en edad escolar fueron referidos por su médico de contacto primario por dificultades para escuchar en ruido o para seguir una conversación, y los niños pequeños fueron referidos por su visitador de salud por problemas en la producción del lenguaje. La tendencia fue que los niños fueran referidos al terapeuta del lenguaje o clínicas APD, en tanto que los adultos eran dados de alta.
