Contact angles of different types of corrugated paper: (a) corrugated paper without coating, (b) corrugated paper with ZnO coating. It is easy to observe that with the increase of nano-ZnO content in the paintcoat on the surface of the corrugated paper, the contact angle of the surface of corrugated paper increases gradually. The contact angle of the corrugated paper surface with nano-ZnO coating is up to 144.8°, which is 30.8° higher than that of the pure corrugated paper. According to the numerical analysis of static contact angle, the larger the contact angle of the surface, the better its hydrophobic property. The result illustrates that the corrugated paper with nano-ZnO coating has better hydrophobic performance than corrugated paper or corrugated paper with PDMS coating, indicating that nano-ZnO improves the waterproof performance of the corrugated paper. [Display omitted] • PDMS-ZnO nano-composite was decorated on the surface of corrugated paper packaging materials. • The packaging corrugated paper possess good hydrophobic and self-cleaning ability. • The tensile strength of corrugated paper packaging materials is enhanced by PDMS-ZnO nano-composite. In order to cope with the poor moisture-proof and anti-fouling ability of corrugated paper packaging materials, the PDMS-ZnO nano-composite was decorated on the surface of corrugated paper packaging materials by spraying method using the food-grade polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and ZnO nano-particle as raw materials, and the wettability, self-cleaning and mechanical behaviors of the corrugated paper were tested. The experimental results showed that after modified by PDMS-ZnO nano-composite, the corrugated paper packaging materials have very good hydrophobic and self-cleaning ability. The contact angle increased from 114° to 144.8°, and the tensile time increased from 7.8 s to 9.3 s. Moreover, the tensile strength increased from 74.04 N to 77.57 N. The PDMS-ZnO nano-composite improves the moisture-proof, anti-fouling, compressive performance and tensile properties of corrugated paper packaging materials, and has marvelous practical application value.
