Based on statistical analysis using observations and idealized model simulations, previous studies have revealed the potential response of early‐winter atmospheric circulation and temperature anomalies to November Ural blocking (UB) anomalies. Using a large number of coupled simulations, this study found that the response is sensitive to the intensity of November mid‐latitude westerly jet over Eurasia. Stronger‐than‐normal November UB without a significantly weakened westerly jet could not cause significant atmospheric response in early‐winter. By contrast, stronger‐than‐normal November UB with a significantly weakened jet would be followed by a warmer Arctic‐colder Eurasia (WACE) pattern in December. The significantly weakened westerly jet favors stronger upward propagation of planetary waves, which causes stronger weakening and longer persistence of the stratospheric polar vortex. This stratospheric response persists into December and propagates downward into the troposphere interfering with planetary waves (especially wavenumber‐1). The lead‐lag UB‐WACE linkage modulated by mid‐latitude jet may have implications for sub‐seasonal predictability. In sharp contrast to rapid global warming, the surface air temperature (SAT) in Northeast Asia (NEA) has exhibited strong cooling in June since 2010. Our results show that this cooling is a possible response to declining Bering Sea sea ice concentrations (BSICs) in March. A physical process analysis shows that decreasing BSICs provoke a south‐eastward‐propagating Rossby wave train and induce a strong anomalous anticyclone over the midlatitude Northwest Atlantic, resulting in tripolar anomalous sea surface temperature (SST) pattern with warm anomalies in the midlatitude Northwest Atlantic. These persistent tripolar SST anomalies generate a new Rossby wave across Eurasia in June, which enhances the cyclonic atmosphere circulation anomaly over NEA and leads to the cold SAT anomalies observed in this area. Correspondingly, in response to the sharp decline in BSIC in March, the NEA has exhibited an unprecedented cooling trend in June over the most recent decade. Declining BSICs in March excite a Rossby wave train that propagates eastward, causing a strong anomalous anticyclone (cyclone) over the midlatitude North Atlantic (subpolar Atlantic) and a tripolar anomalous sea surface temperature (SST) pattern by modifying the surface heat flux. The tripolar SST pattern in the North Atlantic develops in April and May due to the downstream development of the wave train; it persists in June mainly due to the ocean memory effect and subsequently generates a new Rossby wave across Eurasia via eddy‐mediated processes, provoking a cyclonic atmospheric circulation anomaly over NEA and leading to the observed cold SAT anomalies. Accompanying the significant BSIC decline in March since 2010, the atmospheric regime and SST variations over the North Atlantic in association with the cold SAT anomalies observed in NEA in June have strengthened and thus induced strong cooling over NEA. Large‐scale cold and warm spells successively attacked North Asia (NA) and resulted in a subseasonal alternation of extreme surface air temperature (SAT) before and after 15 January 2021. Our results show the synergistic effect of annual cycle and intraseasonal oscillation component (AC and ISO) of SAT and circulation anomalies caused temperature extremes. Before 15 January 2021, an eastward‐propagating Rossby wave train strengthened the cold circulation regime with an enhanced Ural blocking high (UBH) and surface Siberian high (SH). Circulation anomalies of the negative ISO were superimposed on the counterpart of AC, which easily resulted in cold extremes via nonlinear interaction of meridional temperature gradient. After mid‐January 2021, however, weakened UBH and SH caused warm advection and spells over NA. This synergistic effect of AC and ISO anomalies in SAT accounted for most historical temperature extremes, implying that AC anomalies have important indications for subseasonal alternation of temperature extremes. The negative (positive) anomalies of AC (denoted PACN (PACP)) are characterized by enhanced (weakened) Ural blocking high (UBH) and Siberian high (SH), corresponding to cold (warm) NA circulation regimes before (after) 15 January 2021. During PACN (negative anomalies of ISO, PISON), a quasi‐barotropic Rossby wave train in the midlatitudes of Eurasia enhanced AC (ISO) of the UBH and SH, causing cold extremes in NA. While during the PACP and positive anomalies of ISO (PISOP), circulation anomalies like negative Arctic oscillation (AO) weakened UBH and SH, jointly resulting in warm extremes in NA. The subseasonal temperature change process in NA was mainly attributed to the conveyance of AC anomalies of meridional temperature gradient by subseasonal winds. Historical temperature extremes were almost attributed to the synergistic effect of AC and ISO of SAT anomalies, implying that the AC anomalies have important indications for subseasonal alternation of cold and warm extremes. This study investigates how El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modulates winter cold anomalies over central Eurasia (CE) using reanalysis data during 1950–2019. It is found that ENSO can significantly influence winter air temperature over CE mainly through modulating the strength and location of the cyclonic anomaly of Ural blocking (UB) or long‐lived UB events. A strong (weak) cyclonic anomaly of UB on the southeastern (eastern) side of the Ural Mountains tends to occur over midlatitude (high‐latitude) Eurasia during La Niña (El Niño) winters. Such anomalous circulation leads to a strong (weak) cold anomaly over CE, especially over East Asia, due to enhanced (weakened) cold air advection toward the CE during La Niña (El Niño). The UB‐related cyclonic anomaly in the midlatitude (high latitude) side of Eurasia is shown to be related to weakened (enhanced) eastward extension of strong westerly winds over midlatitude Eurasia during La Niña (El Niño) winters. The recent summer surface air temperature (SAT) changes over densely populated Eurasia exhibit a non‐uniform pattern with amplified warming over Europe and East Asia (EA) but weak warming over Central Asia (CA), forming a wave train‐like structure. However, the key factors that determine this non‐uniform warming pattern remain unclear. By analyzing observations and model simulations, here, we show that more than half of the SAT multidecadal variations from 1950 to 2014 over Europe‐west Asia and EA may have resulted from external forcing, rather than from internal variability in the Atlantic as previously thought. In contrast, the recent SAT over CA is influenced mainly by internal variations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Large ensemble model simulations suggest that the forced SAT multidecadal variations over Eurasia are mainly caused by changes in greenhouse gases and aerosols. Our findings provide strong evidence for major impacts of external forcing on multidecadal climate variations over Eurasia. Here we show that the surface air temperature multidecadal variations since 1950 over Eurasia are caused by both IV and external forcing, with more than half of the variations over Europe‐west Asia and EA resulted from external forcing (i.e., greenhouse gases [GHGs] and aerosols), in contrast to the previous notion that the non‐uniform warming is mainly originated from the Atlantic Ocean. Looking ahead into the upcoming decades, aerosols will continue to decrease, whereas the AMO will likely be in its positive phase. These changes, together with continued increases in GHGs, will accelerate warming trends over Eurasia and further exacerbate summer heat waves. Coupling of soil‐air temperature is fundamentally relevant to various biophysical and biogeochemical functions near the land surface. However, coupling at an interannual scale is less addressed than at finer timescales, such as diurnal and seasonal scales. Here, we show that interannual variability of soil‐air temperature coupling decreased significantly during 1984–2013 across 196 stations in northern Eurasia. Coupling at a depth of 0.2 m remained significant in only 53% of stations during 1999–2013, while it was significant in 80% of stations during 1984–1998. Decreased coupling is mainly attributable to air temperature change in the snow‐free season and snow cover retreat. Moreover, change in the extreme snow cover frequency also contributes to the decline, while other climate extremes are less influential. The findings can help us to understand long‐term land‐climate thermal interactions and to evaluate soil temperature profiles simulated by land surface models. Plain Language Summary: The near‐surface air temperature closely relates to soil temperature, and the strength of this relationship may be altered by the presence of other environmental elements such as snow cover, soil moisture, and vegetation. In this study, by using paired observations at 196 stations collected from 1984 to 2013 over northern Eurasia, we show that coupling of soil‐air temperature was not constant and decreased over time. In the European part of the study region, the coupling consistently decreased; however, there was no clear pattern over the permafrost area. We found that this decline may relate to the increase in air temperature during the snow‐free season and snow cover retreat over the period. The decreased coupling was also affected by extreme snow cover frequency. Moreover, we found that the decrease in coupling may accelerate if warming continues in the future. Under a changing climate, the compound impacts of multiple environmental changes on the interannual variability of coupling remain uncertain. The results can advance our knowledge of long‐term soil‐air temperature coupling and help in evaluating soil temperature profiles simulated by land surface models. A coordinated set of large ensemble atmosphere‐only simulations is used to investigate the impacts of observed Arctic sea ice‐driven variability (SIDV) on the atmospheric circulation during 1979–2014. The experimental protocol permits separating Arctic SIDV from internal variability and variability driven by other forcings including sea surface temperature and greenhouse gases. The geographic pattern of SIDV is consistent across seven participating models, but its magnitude strongly depends on ensemble size. Based on 130 members, winter SIDV is ~0.18 hPa2 for Arctic‐averaged sea level pressure (~1.5% of the total variance), and ~0.35 K2 for surface air temperature (~21%) at interannual and longer timescales. The results suggest that more than 100 (40) members are needed to separate Arctic SIDV from other components for dynamical (thermodynamical) variables, and insufficient ensemble size always leads to overestimation of SIDV. Nevertheless, SIDV is 0.75–1.5 times as large as the variability driven by other forcings over northern Eurasia and Arctic. Plain Language Summary: Changing Arctic sea ice conditions since the late 1970s have exerted profound impacts on environment and ecosystem at the high latitudes and have been suggested to affect midlatitude weather and climate, although this topic has been controversial. In order to improve our understanding on how Arctic sea ice changes influence local and remote weather and climate, a coordinated set of experiments has been performed using various state‐of‐the‐art atmosphere‐only models to study the linkages between the Arctic climate change and lower latitudes. This study uses seven models following a common experimental protocol to investigate the atmospheric circulation changes forced by Arctic sea ice variability. The protocol allows the Arctic sea ice‐driven variability (SIDV) to be singled out. In boreal winter, the Arctic SIDV is ~0.18 hPa2 and accounts for only ~1.5% of the total variance for sea level pressure, while it is ~0.35 K2 and accounts for ~21% for surface air temperature. The results also suggest that using insufficient ensembles always leads to an overestimation of SIDV, and more than 100 and 40 ensemble members are needed for sea level pressure and surface air temperature within the Arctic, respectively, to separate the SIDV from the variability due to other factors, primarily the atmospheric internal variability.
