The article discusses the role that the development electric power plays in improving the living conditions of poor people and reducing poverty in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. An overview of the role that developing countries' policies play in bringing electric power to their countries' poor people is provided. The role that international humanitarian assistance to help fund electric power in developing countries, including in regard to the U.S. President Barack Obama's Power Africa initiative, is discussed.
