Traditional image classification usually relies on manual feature extraction; however, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence and intelligent vision technology, deep learning models such as CNNs can automatically extract key features from input images to achieve efficient classification. This study focuses on the application of lightweight separable convolutional neural networks in domain-specific image classification tasks. In this paper, we discuss how to use the SSDLite object detection algorithm combined with the MobileNetV2 lightweight convolutional architecture for puppet dynasty recognition from images—a novel and challenging task. By constructing a system that combines object detection and image classification, we aimed to solve the problem of automatic puppet dynasty recognition to reduce manual intervention and improve recognition efficiency and accuracy. Block compressed sensing (BCS) is a promising method for resource-constrained image/video coding applications. However, the quantization of BCS measurements has posed a challenge, leading to significant quantization errors and encoding redundancy. In this paper, we propose a quantization method for BCS measurements using convolutional neural networks (CNN). The quantization process maps measurements to quantized data that follow a uniform distribution based on the measurements' distribution, which aims to maximize the amount of information carried by the quantized data. The dequantization process restores the quantized data to data that conform to the measurements' distribution. The restored data are then modified by the correlation information of the measurements drawn from the quantized data, with the goal of minimizing the quantization errors. The proposed method uses CNNs to construct quantization and dequantization processes, and the networks are trained jointly. The distribution parameters of each block are used as side information, which is quantized with 1 bit by the same method. Extensive experiments on four public datasets showed that, compared with uniform quantization and entropy coding, the proposed method can improve the PSNR by an average of 0.48 dB without using entropy coding when the compression bit rate is 0.1 bpp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The No Free Lunch Theorem tells us that no algorithm can beat other algorithms on all types of problems. The algorithm selection structure is proposed to select the most suitable algorithm from a set of algorithms for an unknown optimization problem. This paper introduces an innovative algorithm selection approach called the CNN-HT, which is a two-stage algorithm selection framework. In the first stage, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is employed to classify problems. In the second stage, the Hypothesis Testing (HT) technique is used to suggest the best-performing algorithm based on the statistical analysis of the performance metric of algorithms that address various problem categories. The two-stage approach can adapt to different algorithm combinations without the need to retrain the entire model, and modifications can be made in the second stage only, which is an improvement of one-stage approaches. To provide a more general structure for the classification model, we adopt Exploratory Landscape Analysis (ELA) features of the problem as input and utilize feature selection techniques to reduce the redundant ones. In problem classification, the average accuracy of classifying problems using CNN is 96%, which demonstrates the advantages of CNN compared to Random Forest and Support Vector Machines. After feature selection, the accuracy increases to 98.8%, further improving the classification performance while reducing the computational cost. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the first stage of the CNN-HT method, which provides a basis for algorithm selection. In the experiments, CNN-HT shows the advantages of the second stage algorithm as well as good performance with better average rankings in different algorithm combinations compared to the individual algorithms and another algorithm combination approach. The fifth-generation (5G) mobile cellular network is vulnerable to various security threats. Radio frequency fingerprint (RFF) identification is an emerging physical layer authentication technique which can be used to detect spoofing and distributed denial of service attacks. In this paper, the performance of RFF identification is studied for 5G mobile phones. The differential constellation trace figure (DCTF) is extracted from the physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble. When the database of all 64 PRACH preambles is available at the gNodeB (gNB), an index-based DCTF identification scheme is proposed, and the classification accuracy reaches 92.78% with a signal-to-noise ratio of 25 dB. Moreover, due to the randomness in the selection of preamble sequences in the random access procedure, when only a portion of the preamble sequences can be trained, a group-based DCTF identification scheme is proposed. The preamble sequences generated from the same root value are grouped together, and the untrained sequences can be identified based on the trained sequences within the same group. The classification accuracy of the group-based scheme is 89.59%. An experimental system has been set up using six 5G mobile phones of three models. Automatic image description, also known as image captioning, aims to describe the elements included in an image and their relationships. This task involves two research fields: computer vision and natural language processing; thus, it has received much attention in computer science. In this review paper, we follow the Kitchenham review methodology to present the most relevant approaches to image description methodologies based on deep learning. We focused on works using convolutional neural networks (CNN) to extract the characteristics of images and recurrent neural networks (RNN) for automatic sentence generation. As a result, 53 research articles using the encoder-decoder approach were selected, focusing only on supervised learning. The main contributions of this systematic review are: (i) to describe the most relevant image description papers implementing an encoder-decoder approach from 2014 to 2022 and (ii) to determine the main architectures, datasets, and metrics that have been applied to image description. An effective fault diagnosis method of bearing is the key to predictive maintenance of modern industrial equipment. With the single use of equipment failure mechanism or operation of data, it is hard to resolve multiple complex variable working conditions, multiple types of fault and equipment malfunctions and failures related to knowledge and data. In order to solve these problems, a fault diagnosis method based on the fusion of deep learning with a knowledge graph is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the knowledge rules of bearing data is used for entity extraction. Next, the multiscale optimized convolutional neural network (MOCNN) proposed in this paper is used for fault classification to achieve relationship extraction. Finally, the fault diagnosis graph of the bearing is constructed for fault-assisted decision-making as well as the detailed display of fault information. According to experiment analysis, the fault diagnosis model based on MOCNN proposed in this paper, which integrates the end-to-end convolutional neural network and the attention mechanism, still achieves an accuracy of 97.86% under the data set of 160 types of faults. Compared with the deep learning models such as Resnet and Inception in the noise environment of multiple working conditions and variable working conditions, the model proposed in this paper not only shows a faster convergence speed and stable performance, but also a higher accuracy in evaluation indicators, which is beneficial to practical use. In recent years, the number of traffic accidents caused by road defects has increased dramatically all over the world, and the repair and prevention of road defects is an urgent task. Researchers in different countries have proposed many models to deal with this task, but most of them are either highly accurate and slow in detection, or the accuracy is low and the detection speed is high. The accuracy and speed have achieved good results, but the generalization of the model to other datasets is poor. Given this, this paper takes YOLOv5s as a benchmark model and proposes an optimization model to solve the problem of road defect detection. First, we significantly reduce the parameters of the model by pruning the model and removing unimportant modules, propose an improved Spatial Pyramid Pooling-Fast (SPPF) module to improve the feature signature fusion ability, and finally add an attention module to focus on the key information. The activation function, sampling method, and other strategies were also replaced in this study. The test results on the Global Road Damage Detection Challenge (GRDDC) dataset show that the FPS of our proposed model is not only faster than the baseline model but also improves the MAP by 2.08%, and the size of this model is also reduced by 6.07 M. Algorithms for converting 2D to 3D are gaining importance following the hiatus brought about by the discontinuation of 3D TV production; this is due to the high availability and popularity of virtual reality systems that use stereo vision. In this paper, several depth image-based rendering (DIBR) approaches using state-of-the-art single-frame depth generation neural networks and inpaint algorithms are proposed and validated, including a novel very fast inpaint (FAST). FAST significantly exceeds the speed of currently used inpaint algorithms by reducing computational complexity, without degrading the quality of the resulting image. The role of the inpaint algorithm is to fill in missing pixels in the stereo pair estimated by DIBR. Missing estimated pixels appear at the boundaries of areas that differ significantly in their estimated distance from the observer. In addition, we propose parameterizing DIBR using a singular, easy-to-interpret adaptable parameter that can be adjusted online according to the preferences of the user who views the visualization. This single parameter governs both the camera parameters and the maximum binocular disparity. The proposed solutions are also compared with a fully automatic 2D to 3D mapping solution. The algorithm proposed in this work, which features intuitive disparity steering, the foundational deep neural network MiDaS, and the FAST inpaint algorithm, received considerable acclaim from evaluators. The mean absolute error of the proposed solution does not contain statistically significant differences from state-of-the-art approaches like Deep3D and other DIBR-based approaches using different inpaint functions. In image classification with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs), the number of parameters in pointwise convolutions rapidly grows due to the multiplication of the number of filters by the number of input channels that come from the previous layer. Existing studies demonstrated that a subnetwork can replace pointwise convolutional layers with significantly fewer parameters and fewer floating-point computations, while maintaining the learning capacity. In this paper, we propose an improved scheme for reducing the complexity of pointwise convolutions in DCNNs for image classification based on interleaved grouped filters without divisibility constraints. The proposed scheme utilizes grouped pointwise convolutions, in which each group processes a fraction of the input channels. It requires a number of channels per group as a hyperparameter C h . The subnetwork of the proposed scheme contains two consecutive convolutional layers K and L, connected by an interleaving layer in the middle, and summed at the end. The number of groups of filters and filters per group for layers K and L is determined by exact divisions of the original number of input channels and filters by C h . If the divisions were not exact, the original layer could not be substituted. In this paper, we refine the previous algorithm so that input channels are replicated and groups can have different numbers of filters to cope with non exact divisibility situations. Thus, the proposed scheme further reduces the number of floating-point computations (11%) and trainable parameters (10%) achieved by the previous method. We tested our optimization on an EfficientNet-B0 as a baseline architecture and made classification tests on the CIFAR-10, Colorectal Cancer Histology, and Malaria datasets. For each dataset, our optimization achieves a saving of 76%, 89%, and 91% of the number of trainable parameters of EfficientNet-B0, while keeping its test classification accuracy. AMC (automatic modulation classification) plays a vital role in spectrum monitoring and electromagnetic abnormal signal detection. Up to now, few studies have focused on the complementarity between features of different modalities and the importance of the feature fusion mechanism in the AMC method. This paper proposes a dual-modal feature fusion convolutional neural network (DMFF-CNN) for AMC to use the complementarity between different modal features fully. DMFF-CNN uses the gram angular field (GAF) image coding and intelligence quotient (IQ) data combined with CNN. Firstly, the original signal is converted into images by GAF, and the GAF images are used as the input of ResNet50. Secondly, it is converted into IQ data and as the complex value network (CV-CNN) input to extract features. Furthermore, a dual-modal feature fusion mechanism (DMFF) is proposed to fuse the dual-modal features extracted by GAF-ResNet50 and CV-CNN. The fusion feature is used as the input of DMFF-CNN for model training to achieve AMC of multi-type signals. In the evaluation stage, the advantages of the DMFF mechanism proposed in this paper and the accuracy improvement compared with other feature fusion algorithms are discussed. The experiment shows that our method performs better than others, including some state-of-the-art methods, and has superior robustness at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and the average classification accuracy of the dataset signals reaches 92.1%. In recent years, with the development of artificial intelligence, smart catering has become one of the most popular research fields, where ingredients identification is a necessary and significant link. The automatic identification of ingredients can effectively reduce labor costs in the acceptance stage of the catering process. Although there have been a few methods for ingredients classification, most of them are of low recognition accuracy and poor flexibility. In order to solve these problems, in this paper, we construct a large-scale fresh ingredients database and design an end-to-end multi-attention-based convolutional neural network model for ingredients identification. Our method achieves an accuracy of 95.90% in the classification task, which contains 170 kinds of ingredients. The experiment results indicate that it is the state-of-the-art method for the automatic identification of ingredients. In addition, considering the sudden addition of some new categories beyond our training list in actual applications, we introduce an open-set recognition module to predict the samples outside the training set as the unknown ones. The accuracy of open-set recognition reaches 74.6%. Our algorithm has been deployed successfully in smart catering systems. In recent years, convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection algorithms have made breakthroughs, and much of the research corresponds to hardware accelerator designs. Although many previous works have proposed efficient FPGA designs for one-stage detectors such as Yolo, there are still few accelerator designs for faster regions with CNN features (Faster R-CNN) algorithms. Moreover, CNN's inherently high computational complexity and high memory complexity bring challenges to the design of efficient accelerators. This paper proposes a software-hardware co-design scheme based on OpenCL to implement a Faster R-CNN object detection algorithm on FPGA. First, we design an efficient, deep pipelined FPGA hardware accelerator that can implement Faster R-CNN algorithms for different backbone networks. Then, an optimized hardware-aware software algorithm was proposed, including fixed-point quantization, layer fusion, and a multi-batch Regions of interest (RoIs) detector. Finally, we present an end-to-end design space exploration scheme to comprehensively evaluate the performance and resource utilization of the proposed accelerator. Experimental results show that the proposed design achieves a peak throughput of 846.9 GOP/s at the working frequency of 172 MHz. Compared with the state-of-the-art Faster R-CNN accelerator and the one-stage YOLO accelerator, our method achieves 10 × and 2.1 × inference throughput improvements, respectively. Recently, the rapid development of the Internet of Things has contributed to the generation of telemedicine. However, online diagnoses by doctors require the analyses of multiple multi-modal medical images, which are inconvenient and inefficient. Multi-modal medical image fusion is proposed to solve this problem. Due to its outstanding feature extraction and representation capabilities, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used in medical image fusion. However, most existing CNN-based medical image fusion methods calculate their weight maps by a simple weighted average strategy, which weakens the quality of fused images due to the effect of inessential information. In this paper, we propose a CNN-based CT and MRI image fusion method (MMAN), which adopts a visual saliency-based strategy to preserve more useful information. Firstly, a multi-scale mixed attention block is designed to extract features. This block can gather more helpful information and refine the extracted features both in the channel and spatial levels. Then, a visual saliency-based fusion strategy is used to fuse the feature maps. Finally, the fused image can be obtained via reconstruction blocks. The rolling bearing is a crucial component of the rotating machine, and it is particularly vital to ensure its normal operation. In addition, the selection of different category features will add uncertainty and bias to the classification results. In order to decrease the interference of these factors to fault diagnosis, a new method that automatically learns the features of the data combined with Markov transition field (MTF) and convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed in this paper, namely MTF-CNN. The MTF contributes to convert the original time series into corresponding figures, and the CNN is used to extract the deep feature information in the figure to complete the fault diagnosis. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by two public data sets. The experimental results show that MTF-CNN can classify different types of faults, and the highest accuracy rate can reach 100%. Manually designing a convolutional neural network (CNN) is an important deep learning method for solving the problem of image classification. However, most of the existing CNN structure designs consume a significant amount of time and computing resources. Over the years, the demand for neural architecture search (NAS) methods has been on the rise. Therefore, we propose a novel deep architecture generation model based on Aquila optimization (AO) and a genetic algorithm (GA). The main contributions of this paper are as follows: Firstly, a new encoding strategy representing the CNN coding structure is proposed, so that the evolutionary computing algorithm can be combined with CNN. Secondly, a new mechanism for updating location is proposed, which incorporates three typical operators from GA cleverly into the model we have designed so that the model can find the optimal solution in the limited search space. Thirdly, the proposed method can deal with the variable-length CNN structure by adding skip connections. Fourthly, combining traditional CNN layers and residual blocks and introducing a grouping strategy provides greater possibilities for searching for the optimal CNN structure. Additionally, we use two notable datasets, consisting of the MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets for model evaluation. To satisfy the requirements of the end-to-end fault diagnosis of rolling bearings, a hybrid model, based on optimal SWD and 1D-CNN, with the layer of multi-sensor data fusion, is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the BAS optimal algorithm is adopted to obtain the optimal parameters of SWD. After that, the raw signals from different channels of sensors are segmented and preprocessed by the optimal SWD, whose name is BAS-SWD. By which, the sensitive OCs with higher values of spectrum kurtosis are extracted from the raw signals. Subsequently, the improved 1D-CNN model based on VGG-16 is constructed, and the decomposed signals from different channels are fed into the independent convolutional blocks in the model; then, the features extracted from the input signals are fused in the fusion layer. Finally, the fused features are processed by the fully connected layers, and the probability of classification is calculated by the cross-entropy loss function. (1) Background and objective: Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common causes of death in today's world. ECG is crucial in the early detection and prevention of cardiovascular disease. In this study, an improved deep learning method is proposed to diagnose abnormal and normal ECG accurately. (2) Methods: This paper proposes a CNN-FWS that combines three convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recursive feature elimination based on feature weights (FW-RFE), which diagnoses abnormal and normal ECG. F1 score and Recall are used to evaluate the performance. (3) Results: A total of 17,259 records were used in this study, which validated the diagnostic performance of CNN-FWS for normal and abnormal ECG signals in 12 leads. The experimental results show that the F1 score of CNN-FWS is 0.902, and the Recall of CNN-FWS is 0.889. (4) Conclusion: CNN-FWS absorbs the advantages of convolutional neural networks (CNN) to obtain three parts of different spatial information and enrich the learned features. CNN-FWS can select the most relevant features while eliminating unrelated and redundant features by FW-RFE, making the residual features more representative and effective. With the development of Internet technology, short texts have gradually become the main medium for people to obtain information and communicate. Short text reduces the threshold of information production and reading by virtue of its short length, which is in line with the trend of fragmented reading in the context of the current fast-paced life. In addition, short texts contain emojis to make the communication immersive. However, short-text content means it contains relatively little information, which is not conducive to the analysis of sentiment characteristics. Therefore, this paper proposes a sentiment classification method based on the blending of emoticons and short-text content. Emoticons and short-text content are transformed into vectors, and the corresponding word vector and emoticon vector are connected into a sentencing matrix in turn. The sentence matrix is input into a convolution neural network classification model for classification. Speaker recognition is an important classification task, which can be solved using several approaches. Although building a speaker recognition model on a closed set of speakers under neutral speaking conditions is a well-researched task and there are solutions that provide excellent performance, the classification accuracy of developed models significantly decreases when applying them to emotional speech or in the presence of interference. Furthermore, deep models may require a large number of parameters, so constrained solutions are desirable in order to implement them on edge devices in the Internet of Things systems for real-time detection. The aim of this paper is to propose a simple and constrained convolutional neural network for speaker recognition tasks and to examine its robustness for recognition in emotional speech conditions. We examine three quantization methods for developing a constrained network: floating-point eight format, ternary scalar quantization, and binary scalar quantization. Medical image fusion (MIF) has received painstaking attention due to its diverse medical applications in response to accurately diagnosing clinical images. Numerous MIF methods have been proposed to date, but the fused image suffers from poor contrast, non-uniform illumination, noise presence, and improper fusion strategies, resulting in an inadequate sparse representation of significant features. This paper proposes the morphological preprocessing method to address the non-uniform illumination and noise by the bottom-hat–top-hat strategy. Then, grey-principal component analysis (grey-PCA) is used to transform RGB images into gray images that can preserve detailed features. After that, the local shift-invariant shearlet transform (LSIST) method decomposes the images into the low-pass (LP) and high-pass (HP) sub-bands, efficiently restoring all significant characteristics in various scales and directions. The HP sub-bands are fed to two branches of the Siamese convolutional neural network (CNN) by process of feature detection, initial segmentation, and consistency verification to effectively capture smooth edges, and textures. While the LP sub-bands are fused by employing local energy fusion using the averaging and selection mode to restore the energy information. The proposed method is validated by subjective and objective quality assessments. The subjective evaluation is conducted by a user case study in which twelve field specialists verified the superiority of the proposed method based on precise details, image contrast, noise in the fused image, and no loss of information. The supremacy of the proposed method is further justified by obtaining 0.6836 to 0.8794, 0.5234 to 0.6710, and 3.8501 to 8.7937 gain for Q F AB , CRR, and AG and noise reduction from 0.3397 to 0.1209 over other methods for objective parameters. Distinguishing the types of partial discharge (PD) caused by different insulation defects in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) is a great challenge in the power industry, and improving the recognition accuracy of the relevant models is one of the key problems. In this paper, a convolutional neural network and long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) model is proposed, which can effectively extract and utilize the spatiotemporal characteristics of PD input signals. First, the spatial characteristics of higher-level PD signals can be obtained through the CNN network, but because CNN is a deep feedforward neural network, it does not have the ability to process time-series data. The PD voltage signal is related to the time dimension, so LSTM saves and analyzes the previous voltage signal information, realizes the modeling of the time dependence of the data, and improves the accuracy of the PD signal pattern recognition. Finally, the pattern recognition results based on CNN-LSTM are given and compared with those based on other traditional analysis methods. The results show that the pattern recognition rate of this method is the highest, with an average of 97.9%, and its overall accuracy is better than that of other traditional analysis methods. The electrocardiogram (ECG) signal has become a popular biometric modality due to characteristics that make it suitable for developing reliable authentication systems. However, the long segment of signal required for recognition is still one of the limitations of existing ECG biometric recognition methods and affects its acceptability as a biometric modality. This paper investigates how a short segment of an ECG signal can be effectively used for biometric recognition, using deep-learning techniques. A small convolutional neural network (CNN) is designed to achieve better generalization capability by entropy enhancement of a short segment of a heartbeat signal. Additionally, it investigates how various blind and feature-dependent segments with different lengths affect the performance of the recognition system. Experiments were carried out on two databases for performance evaluation that included single and multisession records. In addition, a comparison was made between the performance of the proposed classifier and four well-known CNN models: GoogLeNet, ResNet, MobileNet and EfficientNet. Using a time–frequency domain representation of a short segment of an ECG signal around the R-peak, the proposed model achieved an accuracy of 99.90% for PTB, 98.20% for the ECG-ID mixed-session, and 94.18% for ECG-ID multisession datasets. Using the preprinted ResNet, we obtained 97.28% accuracy for 0.5-second segments around the R-peaks for ECG-ID multisession datasets, outperforming existing methods. It was found that the time–frequency domain representation of a short segment of an ECG signal can be feasible for biometric recognition by achieving better accuracy and acceptability of this modality. Failure detection and diagnosis are of crucial importance for the reliable and safe operation of industrial equipment and systems, while gearbox failures are one of the main factors leading to long-term downtime. Condition-based maintenance addresses this issue using several expert systems for early failure diagnosis to avoid unplanned shutdowns. In this context, this paper provides a comparative study of two machine-learning-based approaches for gearbox failure diagnosis. The first uses linear predictive coefficients for signal processing and long short-term memory for learning, while the second is based on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients for signal processing, a convolutional neural network for feature extraction, and long short-term memory for classification. This comparative study proposes an improved predictive method using the early fusion technique of multisource sensing data. Early detection of arrhythmia and effective treatment can prevent deaths caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD). In clinical practice, the diagnosis is made by checking the electrocardiogram (ECG) beat-by-beat, but this is usually time-consuming and laborious. In the paper, we propose an automatic ECG classification method based on Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CWT is used to decompose ECG signals to obtain different time-frequency components, and CNN is used to extract features from the 2D-scalogram composed of the above time-frequency components. Considering the surrounding R peak interval (also called RR interval) is also useful for the diagnosis of arrhythmia, four RR interval features are extracted and combined with the CNN features to input into a fully connected layer for ECG classification. By testing in the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, our method achieves an overall performance of 70.75%, 67.47%, 68.76%, and 98.74% for positive predictive value, sensitivity, F1-score, and accuracy, respectively. Compared with existing methods, the overall F1-score of our method is increased by 4.75~16.85%. In the area of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), the detection of P300 is a very important technique and has a lot of applications. Although this problem has been studied for decades, it is still a tough problem in electroencephalography (EEG) signal processing owing to its high dimension features and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Recently, neural networks, like conventional neural networks (CNN), has shown excellent performance on many applications. However, standard convolutional neural networks suffer from performance degradation on dealing with noisy data or data with too many redundant information. In this paper, we proposed a novel convolutional neural network with variational information bottleneck for P300 detection. Wiht the CNN architecture and information bottleneck, the proposed network termed P300-VIB-Net could remove the redundant information in data effectively. The experimental results on BCI competition data sets show that P300-VIB-Net achieves cutting-edge character recognition performance. Furthermore, the proposed model is capable of restricting the flow of irrelevant information adaptively in the network from perspective of information theory. Automated border control systems are the first critical infrastructure point when crossing a border country. Crossing border lines for unauthorized passengers is a high security risk to any country. This paper presents a multispectral analysis of presentation attack detection for facial biometrics using the learned features from a convolutional neural network. Three sensors are considered to design and develop a new database that is composed of visible (VIS), near-infrared (NIR), and thermal images. Most studies are based on laboratory or ideal conditions-controlled environments. However, in a real scenario, a subject's situation is completely modified due to diverse physiological conditions, such as stress, temperature changes, sweating, and increased blood pressure. For this reason, the added value of this study is that this database was acquired in situ. The attacks considered were printed, masked, and displayed images. In addition, five classifiers were used to detect the presentation attack. Note that thermal sensors provide better performance than other solutions. The results present better outputs when all sensors are used together, regardless of whether classifier or feature-level fusion is considered. Deep learning has achieved many successes in different fields but can sometimes encounter an overfitting problem when there are insufficient amounts of labeled samples. In solving the problem of learning with limited training data, meta-learning is proposed to remember some common knowledge by leveraging a large number of similar few-shot tasks and learning how to adapt a base-learner to a new task for which only a few labeled samples are available. Current meta-learning approaches typically uses Shallow Neural Networks (SNNs) to avoid overfitting, thus wasting much information in adapting to a new task. Moreover, the Euclidean space-based gradient descent in existing meta-learning approaches always lead to an inaccurate update of meta-learners, which poses a challenge to meta-learning models in extracting features from samples and updating network parameters. In this paper, we propose a novel meta-learning model called Multi-Stage Meta-Learning (MSML) to post the bottleneck during the adapting process. The proposed method constrains a network to Stiefel manifold so that a meta-learner could perform a more stable gradient descent in limited steps so that the adapting process can be accelerated. Decoding motor imagery (MI) electroencephalogram (EEG) signals for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is a challenging task because of the severe non-stationarity of perceptual decision processes. Recently, deep learning techniques have had great success in EEG decoding because of their prominent ability to learn features from raw EEG signals automatically. However, the challenge that the deep learning method faces is that the shortage of labeled EEG signals and EEGs sampled from other subjects cannot be used directly to train a convolutional neural network (ConvNet) for a target subject. To solve this problem, in this paper, we present a novel conditional domain adaptation neural network (CDAN) framework for MI EEG signal decoding. Specifically, in the CDAN, a densely connected ConvNet is firstly applied to obtain high-level discriminative features from raw EEG time series. Then, a novel conditional domain discriminator is introduced to work as an adversarial with the label classifier to learn commonly shared intra-subjects EEG features. As a result, the CDAN model trained with sufficient EEG signals from other subjects can be used to classify the signals from the target subject efficiently. Competitive experimental results on a public EEG dataset (High Gamma Dataset) against the state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed framework in recognizing MI EEG signals, indicating its effectiveness in automatic perceptual decision decoding. Recently, convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the encoder-decoder structure have been successfully applied to image dehazing. However, these CNN based dehazing methods have two limitations: First, these dehazing models are large in size with enormous parameters, which not only consumes much GPU memory, but also is hard to train from scratch. Second, these models, which ignore the structural information at different resolutions of intermediate layers, cannot capture informative texture and edge information for dehazing by stacking more layers. In this paper, we propose a light-weight end-to-end network named the residual dense pyramid network (RDPN) to address the above problems. To exploit the structural information at different resolutions of intermediate layers fully, a new residual dense pyramid (RDP) is proposed as a building block. By introducing a dense information fusion layer and the residual learning module, the RDP can maximize the information flow and extract local features. Furthermore, the RDP further learns the structural information from intermediate layers via a multiscale pyramid fusion mechanism. To reduce the number of network parameters and to ease the training process, we use one RDP in the encoder and two RDPs in the decoder, following a multilevel pyramid pooling layer for incorporating global context features before estimating the final result. The extensive experimental results on a synthetic dataset and real-world images demonstrate that the new RDPN achieves favourable performance compared with some state-of-the-art methods, e.g., the recent densely connected pyramid dehazing network, the all-in-one dehazing network, the enhanced pix2pix dehazing network, pixel-based alpha blending, artificial multi-exposure image fusions and the genetic programming estimator, in terms of accuracy, run time and number of parameters. To be specific, RDPN outperforms all of the above methods in terms of PSNR by at least 4.25 dB. Image retrieval based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) has attracted great attention among researchers because of the high performance. The pooling method has become a research hotpot in the task of image retrieval in recent years. In this paper, we propose the feature distribution entropy (FDE) to measure the difference of regional distribution information in the feature maps from CNNs. We propose a novel pooling method, which fuses our proposed FDE with region maximum activations of convolutions (R-MAC) features to improve the performance of image retrieval, as it takes the advantage of regional distribution information in the feature maps. Compared with the descriptors computed by R-MAC pooling, our proposed method considers not only the most significant feature values of each region in feature map, but also the distribution difference in different regions. We utilize the histogram of feature values to calculate regional distribution entropy and concatenate the regional distribution entropy into FDE, which is further normalized and fused with R-MAC feature vectors by weighted summation to generate the final feature descriptors. We have conducted experiments on public datasets and the results demonstrate that our proposed method could produce better retrieval performances than existing state-of-the-art algorithms. In this paper, we present a new effective infrared (IR) and visible (VIS) image fusion method by using a deep neural network. In our method, a Siamese convolutional neural network (CNN) is applied to automatically generate a weight map which represents the saliency of each pixel for a pair of source images. A CNN plays a role in automatic encoding an image into a feature domain for classification. By applying the proposed method, the key problems in image fusion, which are the activity level measurement and fusion rule design, can be figured out in one shot. The fusion is carried out through the multi-scale image decomposition based on wavelet transform, and the reconstruction result is more perceptual to a human visual system. In addition, the visual qualitative effectiveness of the proposed fusion method is evaluated by comparing pedestrian detection results with other methods, by using the YOLOv3 object detector using a public benchmark dataset. Detecting and classifying ships based on radiated noise provide practical guidelines for the reduction of underwater noise footprint of shipping. In this paper, the detection and classification are implemented by auditory inspired convolutional neural networks trained from raw underwater acoustic signal. The proposed model includes three parts. The first part is performed by a multi-scale 1D time convolutional layer initialized by auditory filter banks. Signals are decomposed into frequency components by convolution operation. In the second part, the decomposed signals are converted into frequency domain by permute layer and energy pooling layer to form frequency distribution in auditory cortex. Then, 2D frequency convolutional layers are applied to discover spectro-temporal patterns, as well as preserve locality and reduce spectral variations in ship noise. In the third part, the whole model is optimized with an objective function of classification to obtain appropriate auditory filters and feature representations that are correlative with ship categories. The optimization reflects the plasticity of auditory system. Experiments on five ship types and background noise show that the proposed approach achieved an overall classification accuracy of 79.2%, which improved by 6% compared to conventional approaches. Deep convolutional neural networks (ConvNets), which are at the heart of many new emerging applications, achieve remarkable performance in audio and visual recognition tasks. Unfortunately, achieving accuracy often implies significant computational costs, limiting deployability. In modern ConvNets it is typical for the convolution layers to consume the vast majority of computational resources during inference. This has made the acceleration of these layers an important research area in academia and industry. In this paper, we examine the effects of co-optimizing the internal structures of the convolutional layers and underlying implementation of fundamental convolution operation. We demonstrate that a combination of these methods can have a big impact on the overall speedup of a ConvNet, achieving a ten-fold increase over baseline. We also introduce a new class of fast one-dimensional (1D) convolutions for ConvNets using the Toom–Cook algorithm. We show that our proposed scheme is mathematically well-grounded, robust, and does not require any time-consuming retraining, while still achieving speedups solely from convolutional layers with no loss in baseline accuracy.
