The article features African American Robert Maynard, who acquired the flagging "Tribune" morning newspaper of Oakland, California for 22 million dollars in 1983. In the process, in which he did not spend his own money, he reportedly became the first Negro editor, publisher and owner of a major daily newspaper. It is stated that by 1985, Maynard's presence had enhanced the paper's sensitivity to the minority community and that he has recruited many of its writers and editors to his staff.
