The structure and function of riparian ecosystems generally result from feedbacks between plant dynamics and fluvial processes and landforms, i.e., river morphodynamics. Taxonomic approaches do not allow direct identification and quantification of the mechanisms involved in the interaction between plant communities and the geomorphological environment. Although riparian ecosystems show enormous taxonomic variations, comparable patterns of plant response traits across different taxa may evolve in response to the exposure to similar hydrogeomorphological processes in relation to flow dynamics, sediment transport, and nutrient and water availability. Biogeomorphological functional classifications for plant responses to, and effects on, river morphodynamics at the levels of individual plants, populations, and communities have been proposed in the literature. They serve herein as a basis for identifying and quantifying, within a presented standardized functional trait framework, key plant response and effect traits that can help to explain feedbacks between plants and morphodynamics. In particular, functional guilds and functional diversity metrics can be applied at the population and community levels for exploring feedbacks between vegetation and river morphodynamics worldwide. In this framework, the variability in plant effects across different environments and spatiotemporal scales, related to the biological characteristics of the plants (i.e., morphological reconfiguration of plants into the flow, seasonal phenology, phenotypic plasticity, and vegetation succession), can be explored. New opportunities including remote sensing and numerical modelling approaches, coupled with the inclusion of plant traits through our original framework, will improve our understanding of feedbacks between vegetation and morphodynamics and contribute to an improved prediction of biogeomorphological river trajectories. • Taxonomical approaches do not permit the analysis of plant-geomorphology feedbacks. • Functional traits links hydrological, geomorphological and biological drivers and processes which shape river systems. • Riparian plant traits converge despite taxonomic variation. • The functional trait approach is an opportunity for quantifying riparian vegetation-river interactions worldwide. • The functional trait approach can be supported by remote sensing and numerical modelling of river trajectories of change. Abstract This paper reviews the impacts of permafrost change on hydrological and related hydrochemical, particulate and organic fluxes in small Arctic catchments. While the emphasis is directed at High Arctic systems, literature and recent developments from other Arctic regions are also included. Hydrological change, particularly a shift from nival (snowmelt) dominance to increasing pluvial (rainfall) runoff contributions has important consequences for the timing and magnitude of hydrological fluxes. A key distinction is made between thermal perturbation , where changing melt season thaw conditions result in deep thaw with minimal geomorphic or surface hydrological effects, in contrast to physical perturbation , where permafrost change results in some form of thermokarst or physical disturbance such as mass movement or enhanced erosion. The latter disturbances are commonly expressed as localized thermo erosional gullies, active layer detachments and retrogressive thaw slumps. Results from recent research emphasise the importance of hydrological connectivity in terms of the downstream effect of a particular permafrost perturbation. Well-connected systems, either at the surface as channelized flows, or in the subsurface, through new or altered active layer flow pathways, result in substantial changes in downstream fluvial fluxes. Surface hydrological connectivity of localized permafrost disturbances increases transport of suspended sediment and particulate organic matter, the latter of which is often old and comparatively labile. Exposed ice in retrogressive thaw slumps sustains discharge during the melt season, further increasing fluxes. Thermal perturbation holds a substantially greater potential downstream impact due to widespread mobilization of solutes and dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, and several studies point to rapid microbial alteration of carbon and inorganic nitrogen transformation in the shallow subsurface. Abstract A channel head is the upstream-most point of concentrated water flow and sediment transport between definable banks with a longitudinally continuous channel downstream. A channel head can be a relatively diffuse feature, the identification of which is subjective, or a very discrete and prominent break in the surface associated with a headcut. As the formal start of the channel network, channel heads reflect the location of process thresholds and thus differentiate geomorphic process domains for water, solute, and sediment fluxes. Stream order derives from mapped channel networks and the accuracy of stream ordering thus depends on the accuracy of identifying channel heads and associated first-order streams. In the absence of mapped channel heads, remote methods that under- or over-estimate the contributing area necessary to form a channel head can significantly over- or under-estimate, respectively, the extent of first-order streams and erroneously estimate drainage density. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge of the processes that form channel heads, the influences on channel head stability, and the methods used to identify the location of channel heads within a landscape unit. Individual channel heads can result from distinctly different processes, including surface fluvial erosion, surface colluvial erosion, subsurface erosion, or the intersection of subsurface preferential flow with the surface. The location of any channel head over a period of years to decades and longer is best understood as an average location that can and does change through time. The magnitude of change in the location of a channel head over time periods of years to decades will reflect the disturbance regime of the hillslope and the speed with which hillslope-channel processes recover following disturbance. If channel heads form where overland flow exerts a boundary shear stress that exceeds the critical value for substrate erosion, the channel initiation threshold, C , can be expressed as the product of contributing catchment area, A , and hillslope gradient, S : AS α ≥ C. An inverse relation between source area A and local slope S is present to a greater or lesser degree across diverse regions. Substantial variability in values of A and S reflects the influence of factors such as vegetation, slope aspect, surface versus subsurface flow paths, and substrate grain size. Analyses of published data suggest that channel head locations can be predicted with reasonable accuracy where surface runoff dominates channel initiation. Subsurface processes strongly influence the locations of many channel heads, however, and the area-slope relations for these channel heads are much less consistent and predictable. The challenges of channel heads are three-fold for any given drainage basin or portion of a drainage basin: to identify their geographic location, to predict their geographic location, and to determine the relative importance of potential control variables on the multiple processes that can create channel heads. In order to effectively address these challenges, additional research is needed to predict the regional characteristics likely to result in channel heads created by predominantly surface versus subsurface flow; develop envelope curves of A-S relations for different regions; compare channel head locations predicted based on hillslope curvature versus actual channel head locations; evaluate the spatial consistency of channel heads through time; and develop A-S relations for channel heads in little studied regions, including arid and hyperarid environments, karst and permafrost terrains, and grassland and savanna environments. With one of the largest watersheds in Europe, draining complex geological terrains within the Alps, Bohemian Massif, Carpathians, Dinarides, and the Balkan Mountains, the Danube River valley has long been linked to the formation of thick loess deposits, particularly within the Middle and Lower Danube basins. However, uncertainty over the provenance of loess-palaeosol sequences along the Danube impacts our understanding of sediment generation mechanisms and hinders interpretation of paleoenvironmental proxies preserved in loess. To date, most of the studies investigating loess provenance in Europe have not attempted a standardised characterisation and synthesis of loess deposits with potential source rocks. Further, despite clear links identified between loess and rivers in Asia and Europe, detrital zircons have not yet been used systematically to investigate the relationship between loess and the fluvial sediments of the Danube and its tributaries. Finally, in European loess research, provenance fingerprinting has often been conducted using indirect approaches or bulk sample geochemical analyses, which have been shown to have a limited application in well mixed sedimentary bodies such as loess. This provenance study of loess along the Danube River integrates existing zircon U-Pb ages and Hf datasets for loess, rivers, and bedrock, with new loess zircon U-Pb and Hf results from loess sequences in Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria. The results show that all surrounding mountain belts (i.e. the Alps, Bohemian Massif, Carpathians, Dinarides Alps, and Balkan Mountains) contribute primary sediment to loess deposits in the Danube valley via its modern tributary network. Critically sedimentary sources remain relatively homogenous along the river, with no apparent major change in source with tributary confluence, further highlighting the role of fluvial transport in homogenising sediment prior to final aeolian deposition. Whilst some small site variations can be observed, they are likely explained by contributions restricted to very local rock outcrops. Moreover, geomorphological results support floodplain sediments as the proximal sediment source and suggest that short-distance aeolian transport dominates sediment delivery to loess sequences, challenging distant sources hypotheses such as major Saharan sources. The identification of sediment sourced from lower elevation regions such as the Bohemian Massif, Dinarides, and Balkans, which did not support ice-caps, suggests that the role of glacial action in silt-size sediment production has been previously exaggerated. Therefore, the glacial and desert loess division inadequately separates and describes sediment generation processes. This research supports and furthers previous work, which suggests "mountain sourced and transported by-rivers" as a more appropriate term for the particles forming loess, at least in the Danube basin. Ancient shoreline–shelf depositional systems are influenced by an unusually wide array of geological, biological and hydrodynamic processes, with sediment transport and deposition primarily determined by the interaction of river, wave (including storm) and tidal processes, and changes in relative sea level. Understanding the impact of these processes on shoreline–shelf morphodynamics and stratigraphic preservation remains challenging. Numerical modelling integrated with traditional facies analysis provides an increasingly viable approach, with the potential to quantify, and thereby improve understanding of, the impact of these complex coastal sedimentary processes. An integrated approach is presented here that focuses on palaeotidal modelling to investigate the controls on ancient tides and their influence on sedimentary deposition and preservation – one of the three cornerstones of the ternary process classification scheme of shoreline-shelf systems. Numerical tidal modelling methodology is reviewed and illustrated in three palaeotidal model case studies of different scales and focus. The results are synthesised in the context of shoreline–shelf processes, including a critique and modification of the process-based classification scheme. The emphasis on tidal processes reflects their global importance throughout Earth's history. Ancient palaeotidal models are able to highlight and quantify the following four controls on tidal processes: (1) the physiography (shape and depth) of oceans (1000s km scale) determines the degree of tidal resonance; (2) the physiography of ocean connections to partly enclosed water bodies (100–1000s km scale) determines the regional-scale flux of tidal energy (inflow versus outflow); (3) the physiography of continental shelves influences shelf tidal resonance potential; and (4) tides in relatively local-scale embayments (typically 1–10s km scale) are influenced by the balance of tidal amplification due to funnelling, shoaling and resonance effects versus frictional damping. In deep time, palaeogeographic and palaeobathymetric uncertainty can be accounted for in palaeotidal models by performing sensitivity analyses to different scenarios, across this range of spatial scales. These tidal process controls are incorporated into an updated predictive decision tree for determining shoreline–shelf process regime in terms of the relative interaction of wave, fluvial and tidal processes. The predictive decision tree considers the effects of basin physiography, shelf width and shoreline morphology on wave, fluvial and tidal processes separately. Uncertainty and ambiguity in applying the widely used three-tier process classification scheme are reduced by using the decision tree in conjunction with a proposed two-tier classification of process regime that is limited to primary and secondary processes. This two-tier classification scheme is illustrated in the three case studies, showing how integration of numerical modelling with facies analysis of the preserved stratigraphic record improves confidence in prediction of tide-influenced shoreline-shelf process regimes. A landscape's sediment grain size distribution is the product of, and an important influence on, earth surface processes and landscape evolution. Grains can be large enough that the motion of a single grain, infrequently mobile in size-selective transport systems, constitutes or triggers significant geomorphic change. We define these grains as boulders. Boulders affect landscape evolution; their dynamics and effects on landscape form have been the focus of substantial recent community effort. We review progress on five key questions related to how boulders influence the evolution of unglaciated, eroding landscapes: 1) What factors control boulder production on eroding hillslopes and the subsequent downslope evolution of the boulder size distribution? 2) How do boulders influence hillslope processes and long-term hillslope evolution? 3) How do boulders influence fluvial processes and river channel shape? 4) How do boulder-mantled channels and hillslopes interact to set the long-term form and evolution of boulder-influenced landscapes? 5) How do boulders contribute to geomorphic hazards, and how might improved understanding of boulder dynamics be used for geohazard mitigation? Boulders are produced on eroding hillslopes by landsliding, rockfall, and/or exhumation through the critical zone. On hillslopes dominated by local sediment transport, boulders affect hillslope soil production and transport processes such that the downslope boulder size distribution sets the form of steady-state hillslopes. Hillslopes dominated by nonlocal sediment transport are less likely to exhibit boulder controls on hillslope morphology as boulders are rapidly transported to the hillslope toe. Downslope transport delivers boulders to eroding rivers where the boulders act as large roughness elements that change flow hydraulics and the efficiency of erosion and sediment transport. Over longer timescales, river channels adjust their geometry to accommodate the boulders supplied from adjacent hillslopes such that rivers can erode at the baselevel fall rate given their boulder size distribution. The delivery of boulders from hillslopes to channels, paired with the channel response to boulder delivery, drives channel-hillslope feedbacks that affect the transient evolution and steady-state form of boulder-influenced landscapes. At the event scale, boulder dynamics in eroding landscapes represent a component of geomorphic hazards that can be mitigated with an improved understanding of the rates and processes associated with boulder production and mobility. Opportunities for future work primarily entail field-focused data collection across gradients in landscape boundary conditions (tectonics, climate, and lithology) with the goal of understanding boulder dynamics as one component of landscape self-organization. • We synthesize work to date exploring how boulders affect the evolution of nonglaciated, eroding hillslopes and channels. • Boulder dynamics are one facet of landscape self-organization, influencingtransient adjustment and steady-state form. • The effects of boulders on landscape shape can be quantified by combining field data with simplified theoretical models. • The key research need is for more field data on boulder dynamics spanning gradients in boundary conditions. Many large rivers in the world delivers decreasing sediment loads to coastal oceans owing to reductions in sediment yield and disrupted sediment deliver. Understanding the sediment load regime is a prerequisite of sediment management and fluvial and deltaic ecosystem restoration. This work examines sediment load changes across the Changjiang River basin based on a long time series (1950–2017) of sediment load data stretching from the headwater to the delta. We find that the sediment loads have decreased progressively throughout the basin at multiple time scales. The sediment loads have decreased by ~96% and ~74% at the outlets of the upper basin and entire basin, respectively, in 2006–2017 compared to 1950–1985. The hydropower dams in the mainstem have become a dominant cause of the reduction, although downstream channel erosion causes moderate sediment load recovery. The basin-scale sediment connectivity has declined as the upper river is progressively dammed, the middle-lower river is leveed and river-lake interplay weakens. The middle-lower river has changed from a slight depositional to a severe erosional environment, from a sediment transport conduit to a new sediment source zone, and from a transport-limited to a supply-limited condition. These low-level sediment loads will likely persist in the future considering the cumulative dam trapping and depleted channel erosion. As a result, substantial hydro-morphological changes have occurred that affect the water supply, flood mitigation, and the aquatic ecosystem. The findings and lessons in this work can shed light on other large river systems subject to intensified human interference. • We provide a comprehensive synthesis of basin-scale behavior of sediment load regime in the Changjiang River. • Sediment loads have declined to insignificant quantities at majority of gauges. • Dramatic sediment connectivity and source-to-sink changes are identified.
