The beach slope β is a key component characterizing the coastal response to wave forcing. Here we investigate the rapid adaptation of the upper beach slope to a given wave forcing, for the case of a lower flat platform. Such types of morphology are found on coral and rocky reef beaches and low tide terrace environments. The influence of the lower platform on this rapid equilibrium beach state is shown to be significant depending on the breaking wave regime. In particular, the width of the platform and its water level can affect the wave dissipation along the inner surf and thus the wave structure entering the swash. This paper provides a classification of the beach slope equilibrium values as a function of the Dean number on a short time scale (individual wave action), based on both offshore and swash wave conditions. A decreasing trend of the beach slope with increasing offshore Dean number (Ω 0) is found for Ω 0 ≲ 2. 7. For Ω 0 ≳ 2. 7 it is observed that the beach slope gradient is strongly controlled by the surf zone dissipation and it becomes necessary to define the swash Dean number (Ω s w) to classify the slope. Progressive coastal retreat has been an issue exacerbated in recent years due to climate change. Sand is eroded from beaches during the winter and partially recovered during summer by slow accretion processes. The development of new working with nature techniques that produce enhanced beach accretion could help recover most of the sand lost during winter and thus reduce the impact of climate change on beaches. The presence of bedforms contribute to increasing onshore sediment transport, but few studies have been performed to quantify their effect. In this study, the evolution and effect of artificially created bedforms on onshore sediment transport were analysed in prototype-scale laboratory experiments. The tested bedforms mimicked a beach ploughing of the intertidal area, with a wavelength of 1.6 m and height of 0.25 m, corresponding to the ploughing dimensions that a tractor can perform. Two tests were performed with the same initial morphology, medium sand (D 50 = 0.318 mm), sea state conditions (H s = 0.3 m, T p = 7 s) that produced accretion, and different water levels that represent two tidal states. The experimental flume was longitudinally split into two equal channels of 1 m wide, allowing the simultaneous simulation of a natural control geometry and a ploughed geometry, facilitating the comparison and assuring the very same sea conditions. The presence of ploughed bedforms produced two effects: (1) an acceleration of natural accretion rates reaching 40%, and (2) onshore sediment transport due to the migration of the bedforms. The acceleration of natural accretion was explained by the extra bottom roughness induced by the bedforms, which produced more wave dissipation through bottom friction and thus more accretive conditions. The ploughed height decreased exponentially as waves broke over the crest of the ridges, which almost disappeared after 2–3 h of wave action. As a result, the extra bottom roughness also decreased as time passed. Consequently, the nature-assisted beach enhancement technique of ploughing should be applied at each low tide to produce a cumulative effect. Plough bedforms migrated onshore at a rate of approximately 0.2 m/h during the first hour, mobilizing onshore up to 61 kg m−1 h−1 of sediment. Ripples appeared on the tops of the ridge crests and migrated faster onshore, contributing to the migration of the ploughed bedforms. Laboratory investigations of beach morphology change under wave action are undertaken to gain insight into coastal processes, design coastal structures and validate the predictions of numerical models. For the results of such experiments to be reliable, it is necessary that they are repeatable. The equilibrium beach concept, that beach morphology will evolve to a quasi-static equilibrium shape for a given forcing suggests that experiments should be repeatable to some degree. However, sediment transport in turbulent breaking and broken waves is complex and highly variable and the level of repeatability at different temporal and spatial scales is challenging to measure, as such, previous work has restricted comparisons to small numbers of waves. Here we use the results of two identical, 20-h large-scale wave flume experiments to investigate the repeatability of sediment transport and beach morphology change under waves at timescales down to individual swash events. It is shown that while flow characteristics from identical swash events are very repeatable, the sediment transported can be very different in both magnitude and direction due to differences in turbulence, sediment advection and morphological feedback. Over longer periods containing multiple matching swash events however, the beach responds in a very similar manner, with the level of morphological repeatability increasing with time. The results also demonstrate that gross swash zone sediment transport remains high even as a beach profile approaches quasi-equilibrium, but the proportion of individual swash events that cause large sediment fluxes (>±7.5 kg/event/m) reduces with time. The results of this laboratory study indicate that beach morphology change has a level of determinism over timescales of several minutes and longer, giving confidence in the results from physical modelling studies. Beach loss is a growing global challenge that threatens the safety of coastal communities, the health of coastal ecosystems, recreational amenities, and regional economies dependent on tourism. Spatial gradients in longshore sediment transport, or divergence of drift (DoD), is a primary driver of beach width change over multi-annual time scales, but the response of any particular beach can be challenging to characterize and predict. Here we present a new method to characterize DoD using a non-uniform segmentation of the coastline informed by the spatial distribution of longshore transport potential, including the location of physical barriers identified using satellite imagery, and both maxima and reversals in longshore transport potential derived from nearshore wave data. The method demonstrates improved capacity to predict beach width trends at sandy beaches compared to methods that rely on a uniform segmentation of the coastline. In an application to southern California where satellite data documents two decades of beach width change, the non-uniform segmentation method correctly predicts the sign of beach trends at 93% of transects within a littoral cell and achieves a linear correlation between DoD and beach width trends exceeding 0.8. Moreover, we find that a minimum of five years of data are required to establish consistently strong correlations between DoD and beach width changes. Conversely, use of a uniform segmentation is shown to be unreliable for estimating beach width trends due to strong sensitivities to shoreline segment size. Storms and extremely energetic events may significantly impact the form and structure of beaches, and so cause erosive processes and coastal damages. Efficient management actions require an up-to-date and accurate knowledge of beach morphological changes, with the shoreline position being a good indicator of such changes. This work proposes the use of the open-source Shoreline Analysis and Extraction Tool (SAET) software for the definition of satellite-derived shorelines (SDSs) from L8 and Sentinel-2 imagery to reveal the shoreline position changes at the beaches of the Ebro Delta, NE Spain. Spatial-temporal models (STMs) of shoreline changes enable a characterisation of how the beaches responded to the storms of 2020. In conjunction with wave data, STMs enable an analysis of the erosive response to storm events, as well as a monitoring of subsequent beach recovery in the short and medium term (<1 year). Results show how Storm Gloria (January 2020, Hs max = 7.62 m) acted as a disruptive event and shifting point in the shoreline trend. As a response to that storm, major erosive processes occurred along the delta that caused an average shoreline retreat of 47 m. A progressive recovery during the spring and summer was mainly associated with periods of low wave energy. Nevertheless, by the end of the year a complete recovery had been achieved for about half of the coast, while the other half showed an average erosion of more than 10 m when compared to the pre-storm situation. This paper presents the use of an Eulerian–Eulerian multi-phase model to examine sediment transport over a gravel beach under regular waves. A previously published full-scale experiment is reproduced numerically; the simulated wave deformation, flow velocity, pore pressure, and morphological evolution are consistent with measurements. The multi-phase model can produce berm formation for smaller waves and beach erosion for larger waves as observation in previous field studies. The sensitivity analysis suggests that the nonlinear component of drag has significant effect on the berm formation through infiltration and exfiltration. The two simulated forces applied on the sediment (drag and buoyancy) are examined. The drag is the main force directly for sediment transport; therefore the sediment transport rate has high correlation with depth-averaged flow velocity. The buoyancy that is caused by plunging flow impacting beach face can push the sediment landward in the bore front, where the flow acceleration has its peak. The flow acceleration is considered in some previous sediment transport models empirically for simulating morphological evolution of gravel beach under waves. In this study the numerical model Delft3D is implemented on high-resolution grids to evaluate beach morphological response to groins and submerged breakwaters under sea-breeze conditions. The numerical model is compared with field measurements from three sites on the northern Yucatan coast of Mexico. At these sites, relatively low energy waves with significant wave heights arrive at a steep oblique angle to the coast that drives high sediment transport rates. After calibration of the model, by adjustment of model free parameters, the model results show accurate representations of the diurnal variation of hydrodynamic conditions (wave height and current velocity) driven by the daily sea-breezes. Moreover, the morphodynamic model shows a good representation of the rapid morphological changes, particularly of the accretion pattern caused by a temporary groin and the subsequent recovery following the structure removal. However, erosion patterns at the downdrift areas of structures were not reproduced, owing to the numerical model limitations of simulating swash morphodynamics. Model validation with field observations of the beach response behind submerged breakwaters enabled the model to be used for a parametric study. Following previous work, new equations are developed in the present study that show an improvement for predicting shoreline changes near submerged breakwaters under sea-breeze conditions. Four southern California beaches were nourished with offshore sand placed as subaerial pads several meters thick, ∼ 50 m wide, and spanning between 500 and 1500 m alongshore. Three nourishments constructed with coarser than native sand, placed in 2012 at Imperial, Cardiff and Solana Beaches, elevated subaerial sand volumes for several years even when exposed to the energetic winter waves of the 2015-16 El Niño, followed by a stormy 2016-17 winter. As these relatively resilient pads were overwashed, landward tilted subaerial profiles (accretionary crowns) formed at the eroding front face of the originally flat-topped pads and pooling occurred in the backbeach. At Imperial Beach, nourishment sand helped prevent waves from directly impacting riprap fronting houses, while groundwater flooding behind the pad was observed at a location where the pad was elevated ∼ 1.6 m above the street. As the nourishments retreated, alongshore oriented spits grew downdrift from the eroding face. The alongshore displacement of the subaerial center of mass of the 2012 nourishments is positively correlated with the seasonally varying S x y (the alongshore radiation stress component). After four years, the net southward drift of the Imperial Beach nourishment contributed to the winter 2016 closure of the Tijuana River mouth and the associated hyper-polluted and anoxic estuary conditions. Nourishment impacts on sand levels on rocky reefs were not unambiguously detectable in the background of natural variability. Over several years, gains or losses in the total sand volume (integrated from the back beach to 8 m depth, over the few km alongshore survey spans) are sometimes comparable to nourishment volumes, suggesting relatively large interannual sediment fluxes across the control volume boundaries. The clearest trend in total volume is at Torrey Pines; during 16 years since the 2001 nourishment, about 300,000 m 3 of sand has been lost. A submerged, low-relief nearshore berm was constructed in the Pacific Ocean near the mouth of the Columbia River, USA, using 216,000 m3 of sediment dredged from the adjacent navigation channel. The material dredged from the navigation channel was placed on the northern flank of the ebb-tidal delta in water depths between 12 and 15 m and created a distinct feature that could be tracked over time. Field measurements and numerical modeling were used to evaluate the transport pathways, time scales, and physical processes responsible for dispersal of the berm and evaluate the suitability of the location for operational placement of dredged material to enhance the sediment supply to eroding beaches onshore of the placement site. Repeated multibeam bathymetric surveys characterized the initial berm morphology and dispersion of the berm between September 22, 2020, and March 10, 2021. During this time, the volume of sediment within the berm decreased by about 40%to 127,000 m3, the maximum height decreased by almost 60%, and the center of the deposit shifted onshore over 200 m. Observations of berm morphology were compared with predictions from a three-dimensional hydrodynamic and sediment transport model application to refine poorly constrained model input parameters including sediment transport coefficients, bed schematization, and grain size. The calibrated sediment transport model was used to predict the amount, timing, and direction of transport outside of the observed survey area. Model simulations predicted that tidal currents were weak in the vicinity of the berm and wave processes including enhanced bottom stresses and asymmetric bottom orbital velocities resulted in dominant onshore movement of sediment from the berm toward the coastline. Roughly 50% of the berm volume was predicted to disperse away from the initial placement site during the 169 day hindcast. Between 9 and 17% of the initial volume of the berm was predicted to accumulate along the shoreface of a shoreline reach experiencing chronic erosion directly onshore of the placement site. Scenarios exploring alternate placement locations suggested that the berm was relatively effective in enhancing the sediment supply along the eroding coastline north of the inlet. Low-energy, non-tidal lake beaches are known to be subject to longshore morphodynamics, but little is known about how they are driven by wind and wave-driven currents. Lake Markermeer is a shallow (∼ 4 m deep), wind-dominated lake, of approximately 700 km 2. A gradient in wind-induced water level set-up at the leeward shore induces a flow from the shallower to the deeper parts of the lake, thereby generating a large-scale, horizontal circulation. Flow measurements and results from a numerical Delft3D model of the lake show that these circulations impact the nearshore currents greatly, even more than wave-driven longshore currents for most wind conditions. From nearshore measurements at the first study site in lake Markermeer, we found a clear relation between longshore sediment transport capacity and the measured longshore volume flux. The model numerical can predict flow direction and magnitude for any wind condition. Using wind statistics, the net transport capacity for a short period or a long term mean can be predicted. The relation is confirmed for a second study site, which shows a distinct net transport capacity that could not be explained from wave-driven longshore flow alone. Concluding, large-scale lake circulations are of great significance for the morphological development of low-energy, non-tidal beaches in shallow, wind-driven water bodies. Beach accretion is the natural mechanism that allows dry beaches to recover. Human response to climate change produces hardening of the coasts and the incident marine climate, which increases beach erosion produced during winter and prevents a full recovery during summer. Beach nourishments are performed all around the world to fight coastal erosion with a nature-friendly philosophy. Softer techniques as beach scraping are also widely applied. A kind of beach scraping is proposed here as an innovative nature-assisted beach enhancement technique, that aims to accelerate naturally produced sand accretion on the beach profile. It consists of mechanically ploughing the intertidal area of a beach to create ridges and furrows. Prototype-scale laboratory experiments were performed to analyse its effectiveness under controlled conditions. Seven 1 h tests having different water levels and the same initial bottom geometry and sea state conditions (H s = 0.3 m, T p = 7 s) were performed. Sea state, sand, and initial slope characteristics assured accretive conditions. Ploughed and flatbed initial slope geometries were simultaneously tested into two sub-channels of the wave flume. The results indicate that the bottom roughness is 3.57 times larger for the ploughed geometry. Consequently, wave energy dissipation is larger for the ploughed geometry, and therefore, the significant wave height at the shoreward end of the study area is 11% smaller for the ploughed geometry. This smaller wave height under the ploughed morphology leads to more accretive conditions, as observed from the measured onshore sediment transport, which is 2.9 times larger than the natural transport, and the larger accreted sediment volume in all seven test cases. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of ploughing to enhance natural beach accretion under highly probable accretion conditions. Mega nourishments are intended to enhance growth and resilience of coastal dunes on medium to long time scales by stimulation of natural sediment transport processes. The growth and resilience of coastal dunes largely depends on the presence of a continuous supply of aeolian sediment. A recent example of a mega nourishment is the 21 Mm 3 mega nourishment known as the Sand Motor. The Sand Motor is intended to nourish the entire Holland coast over a period of two decades. Four years of bi-monthly topographic measurements of the Sand Motor domain provide an opportunity to analyze spatiotemporal variations in aeolian sediment supply using an aeolian sediment budget analysis. It appears that more than 58% of all aeolian sediment deposits originate from the low-lying beaches that are regularly reworked by waves. Aeolian sediment supply from higher beaches diminished after half a year after construction of the Sand Motor, likely due to the formation of deflation lag deposits that constitute a beach armor layer. The compartmentalization of the Sand Motor in armored and unarmored surfaces suggests that the construction height is an important design criterion that influences the lifetime and region of influence for any mega nourishment. A moderate-size (344,000 m3) subaerial beach nourishment was placed in 2012 in front of flood-prone homes at Imperial Beach, California. The subaerially persistent coarser-than-native nourishment sand spread alongshore over a ∼ 4 km span. By winter 2018/19 subaerial sand volumes in front of the flood-prone homes were eroded to near pre-nourishment levels, while sand accumulated near a river mouth ∼ 1.5 km to the south. The observed alongshore patterns of post-nourishment erosion/accretion are consistent with the modeled convergence/divergence of alongshore currents driven by wave radiation stress S x y gradients associated with refraction over a relic cobble ebb shoal. The same alongshore patterns of subaerial erosion/accretion were observed in the 6 years preceding the nourishment, indicating a wave-driven erosion hotspot in front of the flood-prone homes, and an accretion hotspot near the region of river mouth migration. Over the 13-yr observation period, the river mouth migrated 600 m southward and closed in 2016, possibly owing to nourishment sand and El Niño intensified local drift convergence. The computationally efficient drift (radiation stress) gradient model uses simplified wave and surfzone dynamics, assumes proportionality between alongshore sediment transport and the radiation stress component S x y , but nevertheless captures the overall patterns of alongshore nourishment evolution and provides a framework to inform sand management. • The subaerial influence of relatively coarse beach nourishment sand spans 4 km of coast 6 years after placement. • Accretion and erosion hotspots are persistent, 6 years before and after nourishment. • A simple drift divergence model that captures refraction over an ebb shoal describes the alongshore variable sand volume trends. The understanding of cross-shore sediment sorting is of primary importance for the design of sand nourishments and for assessing the suitability of the seabed to different ecological species. In this paper, sediment sorting processes were investigated by using a combination of physical and detailed numerical modelling. Data from large-scale wave flume experiments were used to validate a 2DV cross-shore Delft3D model. The model solves coupled short-wave averaged equations for flow, sediment transport, bed composition and bed level change. The infra-gravity wave motions were explicitly resolved. In order to investigate sorting processes, eight sediment fractions were used as well as a layered bed stratigraphy. The effects of different wave conditions (high energetic and more moderate energetic waves) on the morphodynamic profile development and sorting processes were investigated. The Delft3D model reproduced the profile development and bar position very accurately. Additionally, model predictions of sediment sorting across the profile fitted very well with the available observations. The numerical model simulations showed the importance of including short-wave grouping and infragravity wave effects in order to reproduce the cross-shore profile development, especially the breaker bar dynamics and sediment sorting processes. Infragravity waves contribute to larger sediment entrainment and more offshore bar development. Besides leading to a better prediction of the bed profile, infragravity waves also lead to a better prediction of the bed composition. Engineered and natural submerged coastal structures (e.g., submerged breakwaters and reefs) modify incident wave fields and thus can alter hydrodynamic processes adjacent to coastlines. Although submerged structures are generally assumed to promote beach protection by dissipating waves offshore and creating sheltered conditions in their lee, their interaction with waves can result in mean wave-driven circulation patterns that may either promote shoreline accretion or erosion. Here, we analyse the mean flow patterns and shoreline water levels (wave runup) in the lee of idealised impermeable submerged structures with a phase-resolved nonhydrostatic numerical model. Waves propagating over submerged structures can drive either a 2-cell mean (wave-averaged) circulation, which is characterised by diverging flows behind the structure and at the shoreline, or 4-cell circulation, with converging flows at the shoreline and diverging flows in the immediate lee of the structure. The numerical results show that the mode of circulation can be predicted with a set of relationships depending on the incoming wave heights, the structure crest level, and distance to the shoreline (or structure depth). Qualitative agreement between the mean flow and proxies for the sediment transport using an energetics approach suggest that the mean flow can be a robust proxy for inferring sediment transport patterns. For the cases considered, the submerged structures had a minimal influence on shoreline wave setup and wave runup despite the wave energy dissipation by the structures due to alongshore wave energy fluxes in the lee. The paper reports on dambreak-type swash experiments in which intra-swash hydrodynamics and sediment flux are measured for swash on a coarse sand beach and a gravel beach. Flow velocity and depth are measured using PIV and LIF respectively; the intra-swash sediment flux is measured using sediment traps. Comparison of measured hydrodynamics with the immobile, permeable bed experiments of Kikkert et al. (2013) indicates that bed mobility impacts on the swash hydrodynamics, reducing the maximum run-up by approximately 8% for both beaches, compared to the maximum run-up on the corresponding immobile beach. The measured intra swash sediment flux at a given location is characterised by high flux at the moment of bore arrival, followed by rapid decay during uprush, becoming zero at some time before flow reversal. For the gravel beach, the backwash sediment flux is negligibly small, while for the sand beach the backwash flux increases slowly as the flow accelerates down the beach, and peaks at about the time of maximum backwash velocity. Intra-swash sediment flux calculated using the Meyer-Peter and Müller bed load transport formula, with measured hydrodynamics as input and bed shear stress estimated using both the Swart and Colebrook formulae, is within a factor 2 of the measured intra-swash flux. The agreement between the calculated and measured flux is better for the sand beach than for the gravel beach, and better for uprush than for backwash. For the sand beach there is good agreement between calculated and measured total uprush and total backwash sediment volumes. The agreement is less good for the gravel beach, for which calculated and measured uprush volumes show a similar trend but the calculated backwash volumes over-estimate the (negligible) volumes observed in the experiments. New flume experiments with surrogate seagrass meadows are presented. The experiments included the creation of a full-scale and realistic Posidonia Oceanica model to evaluate the effect over wave attenuation, sediment transport and shoreline erosion. A hydrodynamic and morphodynamic comparison between cases with seagrass and without seagrass for two wave energy conditions was performed. Meadow density and submergence ratio were constant for tests under irregular waves. The wave height reduction, bar crest location, total sediment transport and shoreline position were used to evaluate the coastal protection efficiency of the meadow. The measured wave heights suffered a reduction due to the presence of the seagrass. These reductions were persistent in the area located between the onshore edge of the meadow and the depth of closure, being of greater magnitude in the more energetic case. All tests showed the development of a bar and the migration of the crest offshore over time. However, the dissipation of the incoming wave energy on the meadow made the bar crest stay closer to the shoreline and consequently generated a lower freeboard. In addition, the bar migration rate was reduced by the simulated meadow effect, in particular in the lower energetic case. A sediment volume significantly smaller was transported offshore when the seagrass meadow was present in both wave conditions. Beaches are dynamic systems characterized by frequent morphological changes due to storm events, gradients in longshore sediment transport, seasonal variations in wave climate and more. The complexity of variations in beach morphology can increase significantly after a beach nourishment, particularly when coastal structures are involved. This study investigates the impacts of a groin field, consisting of both notched and traditional groins, on the morphological evolution of a beach in Deal, New Jersey, USA. More specifically, an evaluation of the performance and specifications of the notched groins is undertaken. In 2016, the beach in Deal was nourished and three of the eight groins comprising the groin field were concurrently notched in order to promote increased movement of longshore sediment transport while maintaining a stable shoreline. The study site was monitored nine times over a period of two years (2018–2019) using Unmanned Aerial Systems Structure from Motion (UAS-SfM) photogrammetry. The near-term morphological response of the study site was evaluated by analyzing high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) and longshore sediment transport estimates based on measured wave data. The elevation change maps established that in general, the groin notching was partially successful in reducing shoreline asymmetry in consequence of sediment transport bypassing through the notches. Differences in behavior and patterns of elevation change adjacent to each individual notched groin was observed even though they were all notched according to the same specifications. While all three notched groins were effective in stabilizing the adjacent shoreline, they varied in their effectiveness at promoting longshore sediment transport through the notch. This is likely attributable to the relative location of the notched groins within the groin field and the characteristics of the post-nourishment morphological evolution; the direction of net annual longshore sediment transport at Deal beach is northward, which caused the southern areas of the study site to narrow and the northern areas of the study site to widen. Consequently, the notched groins in the wider sections of beach did not function as intended, as the notches filled in with sediment causing them to mimic the behavior of a traditional groin, including restricted longshore sediment transport and significant erosion/accretion offsets. In the narrower section of beach, the notched groin functioned as designed, such that the notch was located in the swash zone and therefore allowed bi-directional sediment transport and maintained a stable and relatively symmetrical shoreline. In this work, a new numerical model for cross-shore beach profile evolution, IH2VOF-SED, is developed. It consists in the bidirectional coupling of a 2D RANS hydrodynamic solver and a sediment transport module. The resulting model is extensively validated against three benchmark cases at different scales, attending to the hydrodynamics, bottom shear stress and bathymetry evolution. Comparisons between experimental and numerical results show a good agreement for both the flow variables and the seabed evolution in all the validation cases without making use of calibration parameters. Additionally, the qualitative analysis of the results is in accordance with previous experimental observations of sediment transport induced by breaking waves. The computational cost is greatly reduced to about 1/10 of other available RANS models. As a novel aspect regarding RANS models, the model is able to simulate the swash zone and changes in the position of the coastline. Abstract: Indian River Inlet is located at roughly the mid-point of the Atlantic coast of Delaware and connects the ocean to two Delaware inland bays. Jetties constructed in 1940 have maintained the inlet for navigation purposes but have also acted as a barrier to net northerly alongshore sediment transport causing downdrift erosion. A mobile, land-based bypassing system was initiated in 1990 in an effort to counteract this erosion. Beach profile data from 1985 (pre-bypassing) until 2008 are used to investigate the effect of the sand bypassing system on beaches adjacent to the inlet. The downdrift beach experienced horizontal shoreline erosion between 10 and 60m during the pre-bypassing period but accreted 10–20m during the bypassing period. The mean shoreline location on the updrift beach during bypassing is 10–20m landward (erosion) of its position during the pre-bypassing period. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) amplitudes from analyses performed on mean-removed elevation surfaces during the periods of highest bypassed volume (average of 83% of design rate) showed that the influence of the bypassing system on the downdrift beach extends to about 1500m of the inlet. An EOF analysis showed that different morphologic responses were evident following the initiation of bypass operations. Temporal variations of shoreline and beach morphology were correlated to the temporal variations in bypassing rates on the downdrift beach only. The downdrift beach response was greatest near the inlet for larger bypassing volumes. Correlation in these instances occurred with a roughly 1-year time lag suggesting that the beach quickly redistributes the bypassed sand. EOF amplitude and shoreline response are weakly correlated to bypassed volumes when the system bypassed smaller volumes (average of 56% of design rate) of sand suggesting that there is a minimum bypassing rate, regardless of yearly variability, below which the effect on the downdrift beach is obscured. Abstract: It is generally accepted that the effect on beach morphology of the interactions between swash motion and the beach groundwater table depends on the elevation of the latter relative to that of the sea. Specifically, a low beach groundwater table is considered to enhance onshore sediment transport and beach accretion, while the reverse is thought to hold for a high beach groundwater table. Here, we use the results of a carefully designed series of tests conducted in the Delta Flume, the Netherlands, as part of the Barrier Dynamics Experiment (BARDEX), to unequivocally demonstrate the validity of this assertion. During the experiment, a 4-m high and 50-m long gravel barrier (D 50 =11mm) was constructed within the central region of the 250-m long and 7-m deep wave flume, enabling a back-barrier ‘lagoon’ to be located at its landward side. The groundwater table in the beach was manipulated by lowering and raising the lagoon level, and the gravel beach was subjected to variable wave conditions and sea/lagoon levels. Using as the initial beach profile the morphology resulting from 90min of wave forcing with the sea and lagoon at the same level, the identical wave forcing with a low lagoon level consistently resulted in onshore sediment transport in the swash zone and beach accretion, whereas the identical wave forcing with a high lagoon level consistently caused offshore sediment transport in the swash zone and beach erosion. The divergent beach morphological responses for the low and high lagoon levels could not be attributed to changes in the ‘bulk’ swash hydrodynamics (i.e., based on single-point velocity measurements) arising from a difference in the amount of swash infiltration into the unsaturated beach. Instead, application of a sediment transport model that accounts for the effects of in/exfiltration suggested that the onshore sediment transport and beach accretion for the low lagoon tests mainly resulted from enhanced bed shear stresses during the wave uprush due to infiltration into the saturated part of the beachface. Due to the large hydraulic conductivity of gravel (K = O(0.1ms−1)), the effect of altered shear stresses due to in/exfiltration may be an important factor in sediment transport in the swash zone of gravel beaches. Abstract: A wave-averaged process-based one-dimensional model for beach profile change was developed to predict the cyclic evolution of longshore bars. The cross-shore sediment transport was assumed to be composed of suspended load due to wave breaking and bed load due to velocity skewness, acceleration skewness, and beach slope. The model''s performance was investigated using the beach profile data obtained every weekday during a 12-year period from 1989 to 2000 along a 400-m long pier at the Hazaki Oceanographical Research Station, located on the Hasaki coast of Japan, where the mean duration of bar evolution is approximately 1year. The model was unable to reproduce bar development from a rather flat profile, possibly because some sediment movement process was missing in the model. However, the model calibrated with a 1-year data set, including the bar evolution cycle consisting of bar generation, seaward migration, decay, and new bar generation, can be used to predict the first cycles of bar evolution at Hasaki. Abstract: The impact of a uniform bore on an erodible beach is investigated using a shallow water description and a sediment conservation equation. The solution, which is obtained using the method of characteristics, employs a cubic bed-load formula and a crudely calibrated sediment transport coefficient. It is found that, as with the fixed bed case of Hibberd and Peregrine (1979), a backwash bore forms, which for the mobile bed also comprises a bed step. It is found that this bed step achieves a significant height. Abstract: A numerical model was developed of beach morphological evolution in the vicinity of coastal structures. The model includes five sub-models for random wave transformation, surface roller development, nearshore wave-induced currents, sediment transport, and morphological evolution. The model was validated using high-quality data sets obtained during experiments with a T-head groin and a detached breakwater in the basin of the Large-scale Sediment Transport Facility at the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory in Vicksburg, Miss, USA. The simulations showed that the model reproduced well the wave conditions, wave-induced currents, and beach morphological evolution in the vicinity of coastal structures. Abstract: Field experiments were conducted on a low-gradient, high-energy sandy beach (Truc Vert, France) and a steep, low-energy gravel beach (Slapton, UK) to examine alongshore-directed currents within the swash zone. At Truc Vert, data were collected over 33 tidal cycles with offshore significant wave heights of 1–4m and periods of 5–12s. At Slapton data were collected during 12 tides with wave heights of 0.3–1m and periods of 4–9s. The swash motion was predominantly at infragravity frequencies at Truc Vert and incident frequencies at Slapton. During selected tides, strong alongshore currents of the same order of magnitude as the cross-shore flows were a consistent feature of both swash zones; however, while the cross-shore flows were saw-toothed with a distinct flow reversal, the alongshore flows were unidirectional and continuous. On the sand beach, alongshore momentum was advected into the swash from the surf zone by standing long-wave motion resulting in the strongest flows in the lower swash. In contrast on the gravel beach, highly oblique uprush directly forced the longshore-directed motions and resulted in strong flow velocities in the upper swash. On the sandy beach, the cross- and longshore boundary layers were consistently different with strong vertical shear during the uprush for the cross-shore and during the backwash for the alongshore flows. A logarithmic profile better fitted the longshore flows during the backwash, compared to during the uprush for the cross-shore flows, and enabled the drag coefficient to be computed. The alongshore drag coefficient was C d, v =10−3 and of the same order as for the cross-shore, but was generally larger during the backwash compared to the uprush. Sediment transport efficiency during the backwash is potentially enhanced by longshore-directed swash flows. Abstract: This paper investigates the evolution of wave shape over a low-crested structure (LCS) using a 2-D RANS-VOF model. The model predictions of surface elevation and wave skewness and asymmetry are in good agreement with the recent measurements collected in a small scale wave channel at the University of Cantabria (UCA). The empirical formulae relating wave skewness and asymmetry to local Ursell number by Peng et al. (2009) have been extended to include the effect of wave reflection and the ramp in front of LCS and a wider range of Ursell number in the present study. In the presence of LCS, wave skewness decreases slightly above the seaward slope, then increases rapidly up to a maximum value above the structure crest, and decreases drastically above the leeward slope. Wave asymmetry decreases sharply above the seaward slope to a negative minimum value at the structure crest, and then increases rapidly to a positive value above the leeward slope. Our bispectral analysis indicates that sum interactions increase skewness and decrease asymmetry while difference interactions have opposite effects and that the former dominate above the seaward slope and on the structure crest but the latter dominate above the leeward slope of LCS. The observed wave shape evolution over a LCS can be attributed to the changes in the interplay of sum and difference interactions. We found that incident wave height and wave period, relative structure freeboard, structure crest width and structure porosity are the controlling factors for wave shape evolution over LCS. This study provides new insights on the role of wave skewness and asymmetry in the breakwaters stability and sediment transport around the structure and on the beaches behind it. Abstract: Coastal groundwater systems can have a considerable impact on sediment transport and foreshore evolution in the surf and swash zones. Process-based modeling of wave motion on a permeable beach taking into account wave-aquifer interactions was conducted to investigate the effects of the unconfined coastal aquifer on beach profile evolution, and wave shoaling on the water table. The simulation first dealt with wave breaking and wave runup/rundown in the surf and swash zones. Nearshore hydrodynamics and wave propagation in the cross-shore direction were simulated by solving numerically the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations with a k–ε turbulence closure model and the Volume-Of-Fluid technique. The hydrodynamic model was coupled to a groundwater flow model based on SEAWAT-2000, the latter describing groundwater flow in the unconfined coastal aquifer. The combined model enables the simulation of wave-induced water table fluctuations and the effects of infiltration/exfiltration on nearshore sediment transport. Numerical results of the coupled ocean/aquifer simulations were found to compare well with experimental measurements. Wave breaking and infiltration/exfiltration increase the hydraulic gradient across the beachface and enhance groundwater circulation inside the porous medium. The large hydraulic head gradient in the surf zone leads to infiltration across the beachface before the breaking point, with exfiltration taking place below the breaking point. In the swash zone, infiltration occurs at the upper part of the beach and exfiltration at the lower part. Abstract: This paper describes newly obtained, high-frequency observations of beach face morphological change over numerous tidal cycles on a macrotidal sandy beach made using a large array of ultrasonic altimeters. These measurements enable the net cross-shore sediment fluxes associated with many thousands of individual swash events to be quantified. It is revealed that regardless of the direction of net morphological change on a tidal time scale, measured net fluxes per event are essentially normally distributed, with nearly equal numbers of onshore and offshore-directed events. The majority of swash events cause net cross-shore sediment fluxes smaller than ±50kgm−1 and the mean sediment flux per swash event is only O(±1kgm−1) leading to limited overall morphological change. However, much larger events which deposit or remove hundreds of kilograms of sand per meter width of beach occur at irregular intervals throughout the course of a tide. It was found that swash–swash interactions tend to increase the transport potential of a swash event and the majority of the swash events that cause these larger values of sediment flux include one or more interactions. The majority of the larger sediment fluxes were therefore measured in the lower swash zone, close to the surf/swash boundary where swash–swash interactions are most common. Despite the existence of individual swash events that can cause fluxes of sediment that are comparable to those observed on a tidal time scale, frequent reversals in transport direction act to limit net transport such that the beach face volume remains in a state of dynamic equilibrium and does not rapidly erode or accrete. Abstract: New laboratory data are presented on the influence of free long waves, bound long waves and wave groups on sediment transport in the surf and swash zones. As a result of the very significant difficulties in isolating and identifying the morphodynamic influences of long waves and wave groups in field conditions, a laboratory study was designed specifically to enable measurements of sediment transport that resolve these influences. The evolution of model sand beaches, each with the same initial plane slope, was measured for a range of wave conditions, firstly using monochromatic short waves. Subsequently, the monochromatic conditions were perturbed with free long waves and then substituted with bichromatic wave groups with the same mean energy flux. The beach profile changes and net cross-shore transport rates were extracted and compared for the different wave conditions, with and without long waves and wave groups. The experiments include a range of wave conditions, e.g. high-energy, moderate-energy, low-energy waves, which induce both spilling and plunging breakers and different turbulent intensities, and the beaches evolve to form classical accretive, erosive, and intermediate beach states. The data clearly demonstrate that free long waves influence surf zone morphodynamics and promote increased onshore sediment transport during accretive conditions and decreased offshore transport under erosive conditions. In contrast, wave groups, which can generate both forced and free long waves, generally reduce onshore transport during accretive conditions and increase offshore transport under erosive conditions. The influence of the free long waves and wave groups is consistent with the concept of the relative fall velocity, H/w s T, as a dominant parameter controlling net beach erosion or accretion. Abstract: This paper replies to TE Baldock''s discussion [Coastal Eng. 56 (2009) 380–381] of ‘Measurement of wave-by-wave bed-levels in the swash zone’ by Turner et al. We address and extend the comparison and discussion of ultrasonic bed-level sensors and buried pressure transducers to obtain estimates of the beach face elevation within the swash zone. Abstract: Using a Lagrangian framework, we obtain predictions for suspended sediment transport under a swash event described by a recently proposed shallow-water model in which the swash is driven by a sustained off-shore bore and the sediment supply from the bore may vary with time. Although the hydrodynamics of the ‘modified’ swash flows differ somewhat from the classic Shen–Meyer description, the overall patterns of sediment transport are shown to be rather robust to this difference. In particular, it appears that in order to determine whether the swash zone imports or exports sediment, it is still crucial to determine accurately how much sediment is suspended by the incoming bore and advected into the swash zone by the flow following bore collapse. Abstract: A technique is described to observe and quantify wave-by-wave bed-level changes in the swash zone. The ultrasonic instrument system is non-contact with the beach face surface being measured and the sensors remain outside of the fluid flows causing sediment movement. Sensor resolution combined with the electronic noise inherent within a digital network data-logging system results in a (conservative) measurement accuracy of ±1 mm, equating to a couple of sand grain diameters in height. Illustrative field results demonstrate the practical use of the instrumentation, and a simple data pre-processing method to separate swashes and intervening bed-level ‘events’ is discussed. These example data reveal rather complex fluctuations of the bed observed over time periods of minutes to hours. Rather strikingly, gross bed-level changes per wave are revealed to be up to many orders of magnitude larger than the observed net rate of beach face evolution. It is outlined how observations of successive bed-level changes at multiple locations within a dense grid, combined with a consideration of sediment continuity, will now enable the total net sediment transported per uprush–backwash to be quantified. Increasing pressures on coastal environments induced by sea level rise and coastal squeeze has meant that tracking the morphological evolution of sedimentary coasts from the last known survey, pre-empting storm impacts and forecasting potential beach recovery following extreme events is of substantial and increasing societal importance. Equilibrium models for forecasting coastal evolution have figured prominently in the literature in the past two decades and show a strong potential for fulfilling this societal need. In particular some very skilful shoreline evolution models have been proposed based on equilibrium concepts. These models are stable, simple and permit long-term (O(10) years) predictions of coastal change. However, equilibrium models are typically highly empirical and in many cases do not consider explicitly the impact of dynamic sea level, which is modulated by tides, surge and global sea level rise. Equilibrium-based models of shoreline evolution have shown particular promise, but these models generally do not consider the role of the sub- and supra-tidal morphology on coastal evolution (e.g. the importance of coastal dune systems). This contribution presents a new model for For ecasting C oastal E volution (ForCE), which addresses these issues. The model algorithm adopts a reduced complexity but fundamentally physics-based approach, whilst maintaining equilibrium principles. Unlike, most prior models, the sub- and supra-tidal areas are represented explicitly in the model, as are sea level variations. Sediment transport is equated directly with the disequilibrium in wave energy dissipation flux, leading to a sediment transport formulation that negates the normal intermediate step of computing surfzone currents, generally required in process models. Two components of sediment transport are considered: The first is forced by the turbulent kinetic energy associated with wave breaking and the second diffusive term, is related to a sea bed-slope disequilibrium. The first component perturbs the equilibrium profile and dominates in the surfzone, whilst that latter component plays an important role in beach recovery. Equations are developed for a depth-averaged, beach profile model, assuming longshore uniformity. These computational efficient and stable equations facilitate long forecasts (>decade) and easy comparisons with a field data at cross-shore transport dominated field sites. In sandy environments, like the beach-dune system, buildings not only affect the airflow, but also the aeolian sediment transport in their surroundings. In this study, we determine how the horizontal size of sediment deposition patterns around buildings depends on the building's dimensions. Four one-day experiments were conducted at the beach using box-shaped scale models. We tested 32 building geometries, where scale model height, width and length ranged between 0.3 and 2.0 m. The deposition patterns were substantial in size: the total length and width of the deposition area were up to an order of magnitude larger than the horizontal building dimensions. It was found that the size of upwind and downwind deposition patterns depended more on the building width perpendicular to the wind direction (w), than on the building height (h). Building length had little influence. Especially the combined effect of w and h correlated well with horizontal deposition size. This is expressed in a new scaling length B for deposition around buildings, with B = w 2 / 3 · h 1 / 3. As a first validation, the spatial dimensions of the initial deposition patterns observed around a scale model of 2.5 × 12 × 2.5 m, placed at the beach for five weeks, showed good agreement with those predicted based on B. • Outdoor scale experiments successfully captured aeolian sand dynamics. • Horizontal deposition dimensions can be ten times larger than the building dimensions. • Building width and height determine the horizontal size of deposition patterns. • A characteristic building length scale links building size to aeolian deposition size. Abstract: The evolution of shoreface-connected sand ridges on micro-tidal inner shelves and the variations in the mean grain size over these ridges are investigated with process-based models. A review of previous studies is presented, as well as new results that concern the influence of grain sorting on the finite-amplitude behaviour of the ridges, the application of the model to La Barrosa beach and the role of wave-topography feedbacks. The ridges initially form due to morphodynamic self-organisation, in which the presence of waves and a storm-driven current are crucial. Predicted growth time scales, migration speeds, topography and spatial pattern of the mean grain size agree with field data collected on micro-tidal shelves in the case that both bedload and suspended load sediment transport are accounted for, together with spatially non-uniform wave orbital motion. The model can not successfully explain the presence of large-scale ridges observed on La Barrosa inner shelf, because strong and complex behaving tidal currents occur in that area. Nonlinear model simulations show that on the long term the height of the ridges evolves towards a finite, constant value, whilst their migration speed hardly changes during the evolution. In the saturated stage the ridges have asymmetrical profiles, with steep slopes on the downstream sides. The maximum variation in mean grain size also tends to a constant value and during the evolution the spatial lag between the patterns in the mean grain size and topography decreases. The processes that cause these changes are identified and explained. Model results can be obtained for transverse bottom slopes up to 50% of their observed values on micro-tidal shelves. Extrapolation of results to realistic values of the inner shelf slope yields, in case of Long Island shelf, a final height that agrees with observed ridge heights, but the modelled variation in mean grain size is small compared to field data. Finally, the response of ridges to large-scale interventions is considered. Experiments reveal that extraction of sand on the inner shelf causes a decrease of the sand volume stored in the surf zone. Abstract: The wave-driven alongshore sediment transport is commonly supposed to smooth out the irregularities on the coastline. However, it has been shown that waves approaching the coast with a high angle with respect the shore-normal can reverse that tendency and cause the rectilinear coast to be unstable [Ashton, A., Murray, A.B., Arnault, O., 2001. The extended one-line coastline model presented in the latter paper is here applied to investigate the stability of the Dutch coast. The main aim is testing the hypothesis that the shoreline sand waves observed along this coast could be generated by such an instability. It is found that the Dutch coast has potential for instability. This is most prominent on the Holland coast, followed by the Delta coast and is very weak on the Wadden coast. Whether the instability actually occurs or not depends on the cross-shore bathymetric profile of the shoreline waves. Under the sensible assumption that the bathymetric perturbation is just a shift of the equilibrium beach profile, the Dutch coast is stable. In this case, the mean annual coastline diffusivity is evaluated and it is found to be typically about 0.010–0.015 m2 s−1, that is, roughly smaller by a factor 2 than that predicted by the traditional one-line model. However, the Dutch coast may be unstable with respect to coastline waves with a maximum bathymetric signal at a few hundred meters from the coast. This is shown in one case where the shoals associated with the sand wave are inside the surf zone during moderate storm waves. Thus the sand waves could result from the cross-shore redistribution of the sand associated with an alongshore series of shoals and bed depressions generated by the alongshore transport in the surf zone. While the generation or not of such shoreline waves by this instability strongly depends on their profile, its propagation once they have been created is less sensitive and is well reproduced by the present model. It is explained why the propagation is to the NE along the Delta and Wadden coasts, why it is faster on the latter and why on the Holland coast there is no clear propagation direction. A numerical process-based model to forecast beach profile morphodynamics has been developed. In the present paper, an analysis of various modelling approaches and key parametrizations involved in the estimation of the wave-driven current and the suspended sediment concentration is carried out.Several resolution techniques for the 1DV horizontal (i.e., in the x-direction perpendicular to coastline) momentum equation governing the Mean Horizontal Velocity (MHV) are analysed. In the first kind of techniques, the mean horizontal velocity is computed from the momentum equation, whereas the Mean Water Level (MWL) is computed using a parametrization of the depth-averaged momentum equation. Two boundary or integral conditions are thus needed. In the second kind, both mean horizontal velocity and mean water level gradient in the x-direction are the unknowns of the momentum equation, thus, three boundary or integral conditions are needed. Various additional conditions are discussed. We show that using a technique of the first kind is equivalent to imposing the difference between the surface and the bottom shear stresses in the 1D vertical equation. Both techniques lead to results that are in good agreement with the Delta Flume experimental data, provided the Stokes drift flow discharge is imposed as an additional condition. The influence of the breaking roller model and of the turbulent viscosity parametrization are also analysed.Suspended sediment transport by the mean current and wave-induced bedload transport are taken into account in the sediment flux. Three turbulent diffusivity parametrizations are compared for suspended sediment concentration estimations. A linear profile for the turbulent diffusivity taking into account the wave bottom shear stress and the surface wave breaking turbulence production is shown to give the best results. Using experimental data, we put forward the poor estimation of the bottom sediment concentration given by the three implemented parametrizations. We thus propose a new parametrization relying on a Shields parameter based on the breaking roller induced surface shear stress. Using this new parametrization, the bottom profile used in the tests keeps its two bars which disappear otherwise. However, the morphodynamical model still overestimates the bars offshore motion, a bias already observed in other models. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Long-term evolution of fillet beaches at Saugatuck Harbor on Lake Michigan was investigated through application of a proposed method for calculation of bypassing rate at inlets or around coastal structures. The method is based on implementation of a 2DH hydrodynamic and sediment transport model that provides spatial distributions of sediment transport vectors. Initial and existing bypassing rates at the harbor were calculated to establish sediment budgets for different time intervals over the past 100 years and evaluate the response of the neighboring beaches to the presence of the harbor. The dominant hydrodynamic forcing and resulting sediment transport mechanisms in the swash zone are reviewed, combined with a discussion of future measurement and modelling requirements. The importance of swash zone processes in the overall behaviour of the nearshore littoral zone are identified, with the paper subsequently focusing on aspects that directly relate to sediment transport on beaches. The review considers analytical and numerical modelling work, and both field and laboratory data. The hydrodynamics of the swash zone are first discussed with reference to the surf zone boundary, swash characteristics, forcing mechanisms and shoreline oscillations. Subsequent sections consider more micro-scale processes such as the internal flow kinematics, turbulence, the bed boundary layer and infiltration/exfiltration through permeable beds. The second part of the paper outlines the fundamental mechanics of sediment transport in the swash zone, followed by a more detailed discussion of sediment transport modes induced by the dominant hydrodynamic conditions. Modelling concepts are reviewed, and the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches identified. A final summary and future modelling perspectives conclude the paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A non-hydrostatic phase-resolving numerical model (SWASH) is used to investigate the wave-driven nearshore hydrodynamics corresponding to new observations from a three-dimensional physical model in a wave basin. In the physical model, waves from a passing storm are simulated by varying the energy and duration of waves generated by a paddle over time and the beach morphology is surveyed in high spatial-resolution using a 3D laser scanner after each segment of the storm. An oblique incident wave angle introduces spatially variability in wave energy along the beach and results in morphologic differences during the storm, with active transport of beach sand by the wave-driven circulation. SWASH is validated using wave and current observations at each stage of the storm, indicating low root-mean-squared errors between model results and wave measurements, where the high-resolution model is able to predict wave shoaling, breaking and generation of the alongshore current. Model-data agreement is not as high for the velocity, suggesting spatial variability in bottom friction and horizontal mixing, and evolution of the bed in the physical model, could explain the differences. The detailed numerical model results indicate that the alongshore current is generated by wave breaking in the nearshore zone, and it increases in speed across a wider surf zone for increasing wave energy during the storm. This is associated with a bottom shear stress that exceeds the critical bed shear stress, with the potential to initiate motion and transport sediment in agreement with the experimental observations. • A physical model is implemented in a wave basin with a long and steep sandy beach. • Wave energy is varied over time to simulate a passing storm. • Wave breaking generates an alongshore current that induces morphologic change. • Phase-resolving simulations of nearshore hydrodynamics are run for storm phases. • Results improve understanding of nearshore circulation and bed shear stress. A man-made dune-beach-spit system at the south-east side of the island of Texel (Prins Hendrik site) has been built in 2018–2019 to strengthen the traditional dike. The core of the dune-beach-spit system consists of medium fine sand with a d 50 of 0.25–0.3 mm. The beach is covered with an armour (protection) layer of coarse materials with relatively large gravel and shell fractions to reduce wind erosion and thus maintenance costs. In the design phase of the project the aeolian sand transport model of Bagnold was used to estimate the long-term erosion losses of sand at the new dune-beach system. This transport model was validated in the design phase by using detailed sand transport and bed roughness measurements at a nearby site called The Hors. This site is a wide natural beach plain of sand (d 50 = 0.23 mm), where 147 high-quality datasets have been collected using a wind mast equipped with 5 cup anemometers and various sand traps. It is shown that the measured sand transport rates at the Hors can be reasonably well represented by the modified Bagnold-equation for dry sand. After completion of the new dune-beach system, a field experiment was performed at the Prins Hendrik site to verify the sediment transport predictions and erosion loss of sand. Data from two permanent wind masts and one short, mobile wind mast were used to derive the effective roughness of (stationary) bed forms. Sand transport rates were measured at various locations using a new trap sampler. The measured sediment transport in the armoured beach zone can be reasonably well represented by the Bagnold-equation using a multi-fraction approach with hiding-exposure coefficient. The predicted transport rates have been used to estimate the annual loss of sand from the Prins-Hendrik site. • Aeolian transport in conditions with sand, gravel, shells and bed forms is studied on Texel, the Netherlands. • Using the measured overall shear velocity leads to overprediction of transport rates. • Using a multi-fraction approach, transport rates in armoured conditions can be reasonably well predicted. • Transport rates on a sandy beach can be significantly reduced (factor 3 to 4) by the placement of an armour layer. Laboratory wave flume experiments in coastal engineering and physical oceanography are widely used to provide an improved understanding of morphodynamic processes. Wave flume facilities around the world vary greatly in their physical dimensions and differences in the resulting distortion of the modelled processes are reconciled using scaling laws. However, it is known that perfect model-prototype scaling of all hydro and morphodynamic processes is rarely possible and there is a lack of understanding to what extent distorted models can be used for direct morphological comparison. To address this issue, distorted scale laboratory flume experiments were undertaken in three different facilities, with the aim to measure and compare beach profile evolution under erosive waves and increasing water levels. A novel approach was developed to transform and scale the different experimental geometries into dimensionless coordinates, which enabled a direct quantitative comparison of the beach profile evolution and sediment transport rates between the differing distorted experimental scales. Comparing results from the three experiments revealed that the dimensionless scaled morphological behaviour was similar after the same number of waves – despite very different degrees of model distortion. The distorted profiles appeared to be suitable for comparison as long as a modified version of the Dean number is maintained between them. The new method was then validated with two further published datasets, and showed good agreement for both dimensionless profile shape, dimensionless sediment transport and morphodynamics parameters. The new approach scales the sediment transport by the square of the runup, proportional to HL, rather than H 2, and yields good agreement between the datasets. Novel observations of bar features and migration patterns at three Italian sandy beaches in Senigallia (central Adriatic Sea) and Terracina (central Tyrrhenian Sea) are presented. While two of these beaches are unprotected, one is artificially embayed through the presence of a concrete jetty. Bar locations and motions are analysed with video imagery data sets from coastal monitoring stations. Wave climate from the Copernicus oceanographic model is used to correlate hydrodynamics and beach morphology. Clear net offshore migration (NOM) patterns are identified at all beaches, although exhibiting different response scales. At the low-slope beach of Senigallia (mean surf zone slope of 0.009) bars are more sensitive to seasonal changes in wave climate, with offshore shifts in winter and inactivity in summer. Mean annual migration rates of up to 0.26 m/day and 0.09 m/day are observed for outer and inner bars, respectively. No significant response to single storms is observed, except during a single NNE storm. No distinct erosive or accretive trend for the shoreline is evidenced. At the steep beach of Terracina (mean surf zone slope of 0.018), conversely, bars are strongly responsive to single storm events, with displacements of up to 25–50 m across a single storm. The mean inter-annual migration rate is 0.08 m/day for the single/outer bar, whereas a slight onshore trend (-0.02 m/day) for the newborn inner bar is established. The presence of an artificial jetty at the Misa river mouth in Senigallia, finally, leaves the bar system, typically oscillating around an equilibrium position, susceptible to larger seasonal oscillations and strong offshore migration due to two ESE storm events. Numerical simulations of nearshore circulation for two storms from different directions predict the birth of longshore currents, higher ratios of significant wave height to water depth, and stronger bottom orbital velocities over bars in case of the ESE storm, suggesting a greater tendency for offshore-directed sediment transport. • Video-based observations of sandbar dynamics at three microtidal beaches. • All bar systems show offshore-directed migration trends and occurrence of NOM. • Response to seasonal climate at mildly sloping beaches, to storms on steep beaches. • A river jetty increases seasonal response of OPE-behaving bars, giving episodic NOM. • Numerical simulations highlight the role of wave direction at bounded beaches. The response of nourished beaches to sea level rise is investigated experimentally with random waves in a laboratory wave flume (20 m × 1 m × 1 m), following on from a previous investigation of the response of non-nourished beaches (Atkinson et al., 2018). The nourishments are placed on beach profiles previously exposed to sufficient durations of waves to have approached a near-equilibrium state, i.e., with stable shoreline, bars and berms. Nourishment was placed in three different locations: on the berm, within the bar trough, and as a shoreline placement. In the latter case, and following Bruun rule concepts (Bruun, 1962), the volume of sediment placed was estimated a priori to lead to zero recession under the chosen water level rise. The nourished beaches were then exposed again to sufficient durations of waves to reach a near-equilibrium state at the raised water level. The shoreline recession and the mean recession of the profile following a rise in water level are compared for both the nourished and non-nourished beaches, and to theoretical estimates based on Bruun rule concepts and a previously developed Profile Translation Model (PTM). Quantitative agreement is found with the variants of the Bruun Rule that account for nourishment and with the PTM, and the predicted recession is within an order of ±30% of the observed recession. Overall, the PTM provides the best estimate of the recession. The mean recession of the profile is found to be in better agreement with the model predictions than the recession measured at the shoreline, because the latter is affected by changes in profile shape around the still water line. The efficacy of the nourishment was investigated from the reduction in the observed recession. The efficacy depends on how the recession is measured. For the mean recession, highest efficacy was observed when all the nourishment is added into the active profile. Conversely, for the shoreline recession, highest efficacy was observed with the nourishment placed on the upper beach because it prevents additional recession through wave overtopping. • Direct comparison of nourishment and non-nourishment experiments. • Nourishment reduces recession associated with sea level rise. • Nourishment placed further landward reduces chance of loss of sediment offshore. • The effective nourishment volume is important to consider when predicting recession. Cross-shore profile response to energetic wave events is challenging to predict because the physics are poorly understood and wave and topographic data are often sparse or unknown. Six events with varying duration, wave intensity and beach slopes are used to calibrate and assess two process-based cross-shore models, CShore and XBeach, at two southern California beaches. Model performance is quantitatively evaluated using high resolution spatiotemporal survey observations along with Brier Skill Scores (BSS) and a Beach Elevation Change Error (BECE) metric that evaluates alongshore-averaged upper beach volume predictions. XBeach is tested with default and site-calibrated parameters. Calibration improved skill for all profiles and events, however XBeach skill scores often remained low and in no case correctly predicted the offshore bar formation. Notably, XBeach is sensitive to the beach profile's calibration depth extent. Upper beach calibration produced significantly different skill than when the full profile was considered. CShore was tested using both the 'Atlantic' and 'Pacific' parameters. Both models predict profile change with limited skill. In their present forms, CShore and XBeach are unable to accurately predict beach profile change on these typical southern California beaches, but when calibrated may provide qualitatively useful beach face erosion estimates. • XBeach and CShore are calibrated and evaluated at two southern California beaches. • Model performance is assessed using the Brier Skill Score and a 'Beach Elevation Change' fit measure. • CShore and XBeach did not accurately predict beach profile change in moderate events. • XBeach calibration is sensitive to beach profile depth extent. • Generally, CShore 'Pacific' parameters produced lower skill scores than 'Atlantic'. New large-scale experiments on the influence of storm sequencing on beach profile evolution are presented. The experiments comprised three sequences that commenced from the same initial beach profile. Each sequence consisted of two storms of different energy, with each storm followed by a recovery phase. A specific focus of the experiments was the influence of storm chronology as well as the influence of the recovery wave energy and duration on beach evolution. The breaker bar and the shoreline are studied as indicators for the beach response. Both evolve towards an equilibrium location for each wave condition where the breaker bar reaches its equilibrium much faster than the shoreline. Overall, no enhanced beach erosion due to storm sequencing is observed. Despite a similar cumulative wave power of the three sequences, the final beach configuration of each sequence seems to be determined by the last wave condition instead of previous storms. However, storm sequencing is important when the beach profile has not yet fully recovered before being disrupted by the subsequent storm. In this case, the second storm does not necessarily cause further erosion but can result in onshore sediment transport and hence, form part of the recovery. The bulk onshore sediment transport as well as the shoreline recovery rate vary depending on the wave condition and the profile disequilibrium and show a maximum value for a recovery condition with an intermediate wave energy. Observations of the depth integrated and time averaged sediment transport on a mixed sand and gravel (MSG) beach are presented and analysed to examine the performance of a new portable streamer trap. Measurement of the longshore sediment transport rate in the surf zone remains one of the great challenges in coastal engineering and coastal sciences. Sediment traps for sand beaches have proven useful in the past, but are not suitable for MSG beaches. This paper describes a portable depth-integrated streamer trap designed to measure the depth-integrated combined bed load and suspended longshore sediment transport on MSG beaches. The device consists of a polyester sieve cloth mounted into a rectangular holding frame. The stability of the device is achieved by gravity: the combined weight of the device and the operator, who is standing on and down-current of the device. The device has been tested in the field under moderate wave conditions at Minsmere, UK. We show that the observed suspended and bed load sediment transport are proportional to the wave energy flux, as formulated in the standard theoretical model, CSHORE. Numerical coastal erosion models are used by engineers to predict the magnitude of storm erosion at the coastline. In particular, the 'dry' region of the beach, extending landwards from the waterline to include the beach face, berm and dunes, is a particular focus of interest to managers, planners and other coastal practitioners. However, the choice of the most appropriate numerical model to predict subaerial beach erosion requires careful consideration of the strengths and limitations of each model, and the quality and quantity of field data available for both model calibration and prediction. While no model can perfectly replicate observed upper beach erosion, this study specifically assesses the quantity of field calibration data required to achieve optimum model performance for coastal storm erosion modelling applications. Two of the most commonly used, but differently formulated, coastal erosion profile models are compared: the process-based and more complex model XBeach, and the semi-empirical and significantly simpler model SBEACH. A rigorous calibration technique (the Generalised Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation) is applied to both models, using a comprehensive dataset of pre- and post-storm topographic measurements collected over four differing storm events at Narrabeen-Collaroy Beach in southeast Australia, as well as at two adjacent embayed beaches. When applying the two numerical models using their default parameters (i.e., with no model calibration), SBEACH was found to be the more skilful model and XBeach default parameters were found to have no predictive skill along this stretch of coastline. Once calibrated with detailed field observations obtained before and after a single storm event, XBeach validation skill rose considerably and provided predictions of subaerial beach profile change with greater skill (87% better Brier Skill Score on average for the same calibration data) than SBEACH. Overall XBeach model performance was found to marginally improve when field observations obtained from additional storm events were included in the calibration process, whereas SBEACH showed negligible improvement. A comparison was made of the options available for transferring previously-calibrated parameters to adjacent locations, finding spatial proximity to be the most sensitive indicator of model performance for a transferred parameter set. Due to the alongshore variability in pre-storm topography as well as wave exposure at the sites tested, the spatial coverage of data was more important for the calibration process than the magnitude of the individual storm(s) used for a specific calibration. The results of this study underscore the need for careful consideration of the available calibration field data when choosing and optimising coastal erosion models. • Default XBeach parameters were found to be non-skilful at coastal sites in southeast Australia. • The XBeach model outperformed the SBEACH model when one or more calibration storm event field datasets were available. • Collection of calibration pre- and post-storm field data at specific locations of interest was important. • Spatial proximity was found to be a good performance indicator of calibrated parameter values transferred to new locations.
