Abstract
An introduction to the journal is presented in which the editor discusses papers published within the issue that were presented at the 2012 convention of the College Language Association (CLA) in Atlanta, Georgia, on topics such as composition at historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), carnival's spiritual role in Kamau Brathwaite's poem "The Arrivants," and African ontology in Zora Neale Hurston's book "Their Eyes Were Watching God."
Focuses on the grading of student writing. Ignorance of many graders about the sources of their dislike of grading; Importance of reading a paper before grading; Awareness of writing as a communication, interpretation and negotiation.
