Landslides are common across Canada and they pose hazards to human safety, economic activities, and the environment. Robust risk management strategies are necessary for sustainable development. A slope risk management framework has been adopted by the geotechnical community for approximately four decades allowing a systematic, consistent and transparent framework for managing risks. Implementing this framework is associated with uncertainties embedded in our estimates of risk. This paper presents a brief summary of the sources and categories of uncertainty in geotechnical slope engineering and focuses on two topics: (1) estimates of uncertainty in risk calculations and (2) temporal changes in landslide likelihood as a function of weather and steps towards estimating landslide risk changes with climate change. The paper argues that a quantitative risk assessment should not focus on the final risk calculation, but the overall knowledge gained. This allows comprehensive documentation of sources of uncertainty and how they impact geotechnical and risk assessments. Furthermore, the paper outlines approaches to define quantitative correlations between rock fall occurrences and weather, which can be leveraged to estimate changes in rock fall risk with climate change. The paper describes load and resistance factor design (LRFD) calibration for the resistance factor used in the Stiffness Method internal stability soil failure limit state for geogrid mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls. The Stiffness Method was recently adopted in the current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials LRFD Bridge Design Specifications in the US, and will appear in the next edition of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. The paper describes the details of the calibration of the soil failure limit state which is unique to the Stiffness Method. Calibration outcomes include consideration of the concept of level of understanding in the selection of nominal load and resistance values which is unique to LRFD foundation engineering practice in Canada. A practical conclusion from these calculations is that if product line-specific creep test data are available to estimate the reinforcement secant creep stiffness used for design, then a resistance factor of 1.0 is reasonable for US practice. If only minimum average roll value tensile strength data are available, then a value of 0.95 is recommended for US practice. Tailings impoundments are often prone to failure due to various causes related to complex loading conditions. For instance, tailings impoundments can fail during or after a seismic event, mainly because of the liquefaction of loose, cohesionless tailings. To improve the seismic stability of impoundments, the density of the tailings can be increased or waste rock inclusions (WRI) can be added in the impoundment. This paper presents the results of numerical analyses of the impoundments loaded with a variety of ground motions with different frequencies, scaled at two different levels of intensity representative of two mining regions of Eastern Canada. The results show that the conventional impoundments are subjected to medium to high displacements at the end of shaking; these show a high probability of rupture during the earthquake or in the post-seismic phase. Tailings densification can decrease the volume of liquefied tailings and displacements during the seismic phase but does not significantly reduce the probability of post-seismic failure. WRI can slightly reduce the volume of liquefied tailings, depending on the intensity of the motions, but the reinforcement reduces significantly the lateral displacements; impoundments with WRI show even better performances during the post-seismic phase. The design of shallow foundations typically proceeds by using the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) methodology to avoid various limit states with some probability. This paper looks at the sliding limit state of shallow foundations, and the sliding resistance factors required for the LRFD approach are estimated using reliability analyses of surface strip foundations. Cohesive and frictional soils are separately studied under wind loading conditions. Monte Carlo simulations are used to estimate the sliding failure probability of foundation designs on cohesive soils, and an analytical method is developed for frictional soils. The results indicate the existence of a "worst case" correlation length for cohesive soils, and the sliding resistance factor required to achieve target maximum lifetime failure probabilities is around 0.4–0.65 for moderate soil variability. For frictional soils, the required sliding resistance factor is about 0.5–0.85 for νϕ′ = 0.15. Overall, the sliding resistance factors recommended here agree well with the resistance factors of ϕgu = 0.6 for cohesive soils and ϕgu = 0.8 for frictional soils stipulated by geotechnical LRFD code provisions in Canada. Investigations of the soil–foundation interaction behaviour of wind turbine foundations and transfer of energy from the wind to the ground have not been reported in Canada. Indeed, very few vibration monitoring studies have been conducted globally around wind farms. It has been found that turbines predominantly produce vibrations related to structural resonances and blade-passing frequencies. Energy is found to be modified with distance and is dominated by surface waves. This paper describes a study of the effect of wind–structure interaction on the behaviour of a turbine foundation and the generation of ground-based vibrations around a working commercial wind turbine in Ontario. The field monitoring system and meteorological instrumentation are described in this paper and the responses of the structure and surrounding ground due to the fluctuating wind-field are discussed. The spectral analysis shows that the higher frequency vibrations attenuate more rapidly than the lower frequency vibrations. The tilted elliptical particle motions are found to be non-Gaussian because of the non-Gaussian wind conditions. The response attenuation with distance indicates that both geometric and material attenuation may dominate the vibration attenuation in the near field and only geometric attenuation occurs in the far field. Location-specific climate datasets are required for the design and evaluation of a number of civil engineering projects. It requires huge effort to compile a multi-year quality-controlled climate dataset. In this paper, a method of generating simulated daily climate variables of interest from readily available climate normal using the general-purpose weather generator SIMETAW is presented. The accuracy of this method is assessed by comparing the climate datasets generated using SIMETAW with the recorded historical climate datasets for nine different sites across Canada with climates ranging from semi-arid to pre-humid. This comparison was done using visual presentations as well as statistical analyses of the two datasets. It was found that the multi-year daily climate datasets generated by SIMETAW using just 12 monthly climate normal values are fairly similar to the recorded historical climate datasets. The usefulness of SIMETAW-generated climate datasets was demonstrated by using them in numerical simulations of three different design problems, namely, infiltration into soils, swelling potential of an expansive soil, and soil cover design. From the results of these numerical simulations, it is concluded that the SIMETAW-generated multi-year daily climate datasets are satisfactory for use in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental problems of the kind simulated herein. Wind turbines are typically designed based on fatigue and serviceability limit states, but still require an accurate assessment of bearing capacity. Overconsolidated clay deposits in Canada often have a thin layer of crust with a relatively high undrained shear strength developed from weathering, desiccation, and geochemical processes. However, existing design methods only assess the bearing capacity using effective area and inclination factor without consideration of surficial crusts. This paper studies the undrained VHMT (vertical, horizontal, moment, and torsional) failure envelope of circular foundations founded on a surficial crust underlain by a uniform soil with a zero-tension interface condition using finite element analysis. The next edition of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code will contain a table of geotechnical resistance factors to be used for seismic design. This paper will estimate the geotechnical resistance factors for shallow foundations required to achieve various target maximum acceptable failure probabilities, which in turn may depend on the assumed design earthquake return period. The investigation will include consideration of design lifetime, uncertainty in the magnitude of the maximum lifetime earthquake event, and the uncertainty in ground properties. The results suggest resistance factors that are lower than commonly used at the moment in Canada and that the failure probability is not greatly dependent on the return period of the design earthquake. The paper will present recommendations on geotechnical resistance factors for seismic design that can be used to guide and calibrate future editions of civil design codes in Canada. The breaching of containment of conventionally deposited mine tailings impoundments, and the consequent release of tailings flows with long run-outs, unfortunately remains not uncommon and often has devastating ecological and economic consequences, occasionally including the loss of human life. Rather than the breaching of containment itself, which can result from a number of causes (poor control of the phreatic surface, unrecognized dam foundation issues), the contributing factor to the severe consequences of dam breach is the low density and strength and (or) susceptibility of the tailings to liquefy or soften under loading, combined with the driving weight of the ponded water, which allows for significant run-outs (in some cases tens of kilometres) to occur. Hence the motivation for developing alternative technologies that dewater tailings before deposition to the point where reliance on containment is minimized or eliminated. In this paper, these technologies are referred to as 'high-density' tailings, which includes any technology that at least produces nonsegregating tailings that will form a sloped stack when deposited, including thickened, paste, and filtered tailings. The paper explores a number of issues related to high-density tailings, including shear behaviour, dewatering behaviour, acid generation, and surface deposition rheology. Canadian hard rock mines continue to reach deeper deposits, which poses greater challenges to mine safety including rock burst control. Destress blasting techniques have been successfully employed in such underground mines with the aim of preconditioning highly stressed rock mass to mitigate the risk for rock burst occurrence in deep mines. In the present study, the efficiency of destress blasting is examined through a comparison between traditional and alternative numerical modelling approaches. The traditional modelling approach assumes a uniformly distributed blast-induced damage zone extending over the entire drift face, whilst the alternative modelling approach, presented herein, simulates the damage zone for each individual blast hole. In the first part of this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model of a single blast hole is constructed, whereby the extent of blast-induced damage zone is delineated. The latter part of this paper uses the single-hole model results to examine the efficiency of destress blasting as practiced in drift development in deep mines. It is demonstrated through comparison of FLAC3D numerical simulation results that the traditional modelling approach may lead to an overly optimistic indication of destress blasting efficiency when compared with the alternative modelling approach, in which a more precise simulation of the damage zones is applied. Large-magnitude mining-induced seismic events can occur as a result of local rock mass stress increase. High apparent stress events can be used as a proxy to identify increases in local rock mass stress conditions. This paper proposes a relative apparent stress ratio (ASR) for quantifying apparent stress of a seismic population. Variations in ASR are analysed over time with reference to seismic hazard inferred from the magnitude of seismic events. This paper explores factors that contribute to claims of changed soil conditions in infrastructure and building projects through a limited review of Canadian legal cases. Forty-one cases, relating to geotechnical problems covering a period of 25 years (1982-2006), were studied. The information obtained was categorized according to the causes for geotechnical claims. The most frequent causes of geotechnical disputes were found to be different soil conditions and recommendations than expected from those given in the geotechnical report, inaccuracies in the design plans and specifications, and the owner's failure to disclose important information. The paper also discusses the special requirements for preparing geotechnical information for construction and suggests precautionary measures to reduce the number of disputes or to arrive at an equitable resolution. These measures require more proactive planning and may require additional funds before the bidding stage to perform a more detailed soil investigation, keep communication clear among all participants, and make a greater effort to provide accurate designs and specifications. Reliability-based design concepts and their application to load and resistance factor design (LRFD or limit states design (LSD) in Canada) are well known, and their adoption in geotechnical engineering design is now recommended for many soil–structure interaction problems. Two important challenges for acceptance of LRFD for the design of reinforced soil walls are (i) a proper understanding of the calibration methods used to arrive at load and resistance factors, and (ii) the proper interpretation of the data required to carry out this process. This paper presents LRFD calibration principles and traces the steps required to arrive at load and resistance factors using closed-form solutions for one typical limit state, namely pullout of steel reinforcement elements in the anchorage zone of a reinforced soil wall. A unique feature of this paper is that measured load and resistance values from a database of case histories are used to develop the statistical parameters in the examples. The paper also addresses issues related to the influence of outliers in the datasets and possible dependencies between variables that can have an important influence on the results of calibration. Canada has two national civil codes of practice that include geotechnical design provisions: the National Building Code of Canada and the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. For structural designs, both of these codes have been employing a load and resistance factor format embedded within a limit states design framework since the mid-1970s. Unfortunately, limit states design in geotechnical engineering has been lagging well behind that in structural engineering for the simple fact that the ground is by far the most variable (and hence uncertain) of engineering materials. Although the first implementation of a geotechnical limit states design code appeared in Denmark in 1956, it was not until 1979 that the concept began to appear in Canadian design codes, i.e., in the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code, which later became the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC). The geotechnical design provisions in the CHBDC have evolved significantly since their inception in 1979. Fourteen large landslides have occurred within a 10 km stretch of the Thompson River Valley south of Ashcroft, British Columbia. The slides have had movements ranging from rapid (metres per hour) to very slow, and the largest slides have volumes approaching 15.0 × 106 m3. Investigations of these slides have been conducted since the early failures of the slopes were noted in the 1860s, and have continued with the periodic reactivations and slope movements since then. This paper focuses on the Ripley Slide, which is one of the slides within the Thompson River Valley. This slide is a very slow-moving landslide, which has recently been reactivated. This landslide is crossed by a major transportation corridor and has therefore been the subject of ongoing geotechnical investigation and instrumentation. The results of this investigation are interpreted in light of the wealth of accumulated knowledge from more than a century of geotechnical investigation within this valley. The data collected from the landslide show that, like other slow-moving landslides in this valley, the seasonal fluctuations of the Thompson River elevation strongly influence the instability and the rate of slope movement. Continuous global positioning system monitoring of the movement of the landslide combined with measurement of the pore pressures within the sliding mass and elevation of the river have allowed for an empirical correlation between the limit equilibrium method modelled factor of safety and the velocity of the landslide. Mine developments, such as haulage drifts, cross-cuts, and intersections, are the only way to access valuable ore from mining zones; they link mine developments with the nearest ore access points. Thus, they must remain stable throughout their service life or production plan. Mine development instability can cause production delay, loss of reserves, as well as damage to equipment and injury to miners. This paper presents a stepwise methodology to assess the stability of mine development intersections with respect to the mine production plan. A case study, the #1 Shear East orebody at Vale Garson Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, is presented. A three-dimensional, elastoplastic, finite difference model (FLAC 3D) is created to simulate the development of an intersection situated 1.5 km below ground surface. The unsatisfactory performance of the intersection is evaluated in terms of strength-to-stress ratio with respect to mining sequence. A failure criterion is defined by a minimum strength-to-stress ratio of 1.4, and is used for mine developments (temporary openings). The intersection stability is evaluated at various mining stages and the modified 'point-estimate method' (PEM) of (2 n2 + 1) is then invoked to study the probability of drift instability at the intersection. Geotechnical input to the design, construction, and operations of pipelines in permafrost may differ significantly from that for pipelines in temperate terrain. The general remoteness and terrain fragility of permafrost regions are key issues that challenge the geotechnical input. Specific geotechnical issues that necessitate input include pipeline routing, slope stability, thaw settlement and frost heave, ditching, buoyancy control, upheaval buckling. and others. This paper examines the history of pipeline development in Canada north of the 60th latitude and highlights some key design issues and some of the technical developments over the past 40 years of design, construction, and operations of pipelines in permafrost regions. Advances have been made in areas such as geothermal modeling, slope stability assessments, terrain mapping technologies, thaw settlement and frost heave prediction, and predicting and monitoring pipeline strain demand. It has been generally observed that the measured preconsolidation pressure values for glaciated soils are not compatible with the measured effective pressure values at the bed of the glacier if one-dimensional consolidation alone is considered as the formation process for these soils. In this paper, a new model for the process of formation of glaciated soil, termed the coupled consolidation shear (CCS) model, is developed using the frameworks of critical state soil mechanics and small-strain consolidation theory. The CCS model includes simultaneous shearing and consolidation of subglacial sediments and is able to simulate profiles of preconsolidation pressure versus depth that closely resemble those observed in glaciated soils. The CCS model is validated by successfully simulating the profile of preconsolidation pressure versus depth for an 80 m deep Battleford till layer in Birsay, Saskatchewan, Canada. The CCS model suggests the existence of anisotropic yield strength and stiffness in glaciated soils as a consequence of coupling subglacial shear and consolidation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Horizontal wells are used in some geological settings in the petroleum industry to produce methane from coal seams. Horizontal directional drilling is used in the mining industry to enhance the effectiveness of coal degasification procedures and to aid in the delineation of coal reserves. Coals tend to be mechanically weak, hence they are prone to borehole instability related problems during drilling, completion, and production operations. This paper includes a review of the mechanical properties of selected coals and provides two empirical cross-plots that can be used for estimating coal strength from index tests and geophysical logs. Linear elastic borehole stability models are demonstrated to be appealing because they are easily implemented, require a minimum of input data, and are well suited to rapid parameter sensitivity analyses. Using experience obtained drilling vertical wells in a given setting, a methodology is described for calibrating linear elastic models to provide realistic borehole stability predictions. Furthermore, as demonstrated using a western Canadian example (a shallow well in the Ardley coal zone), relatively simple elastoplastic models can be used effectively for borehole stability analyses. Current limit equilibrium-based design methods for the internal stability design of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls in North America are based on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Simplified Method. A deficiency of this approach is that the influence of the facing type on reinforcement loads is not considered. This paper reports the results of two instrumented full-scale walls constructed in a large test facility at the Royal Military College of Canada. The walls were nominally identical except one wall was constructed with a stiff face and the other with a flexible wrapped face. The peak reinforcement loads in the flexible wall were about three and a half times greater than the stiff-face wall at the end of construction and about two times greater at the end of surcharging. The stiff-face wall analysis using the Simplified Method gave a maximum reinforcement load value that was one and a half times greater than the measured value at the end of construction. Furthermore, the surcharge pressure required to reach the creep-limited strength of the reinforcement was about two times greater than the predicted value. The results demonstrate quantitatively that a stiff facing in a reinforced soil wall is a structural component that can lead to significant reductions in reinforcement loads compared to flexible facing systems. Hydrogeological models need to be supported by a clear understanding of the subsurface geology to provide effective assessment, flow modelling, or management of groundwater regimes. This paper illustrates how geophysical and sedimentological data can be used to significantly improve watershed-scale hydrostratigraphic models by advancing our understanding of the subsurface through regional hydrogeological investigations in the Greater Toronto Area. The example of a 3 km shallow seismic reflection survey that traverses a buried channel within Bowmanville Creek watershed. Oak Ridges Moraine, Ontario, illustrates a basis for linking geophysical and sedimentological properties to regional hydrostratigraphic parameters. Seismic reflection methods plus seismic stratigraphy and a well-constrained three-dimensional geological framework have helped to (i) identify regional hydrostratigraphic units, (ii) define properties and trends of these units-facies, (iii) improve depositional models that assist hydrogeological analysis, and (iv) establish a hydrostratigraphic framework within a watershed. The extent, proportions, boundaries, and variation in internal properties of major hydrostratigraphic units could be identified to greater than 100 m depth. Geostatistical analysis of seismic amplitudes was used to provide a quantitative measure of heterogeneity in a glaciofluvial aquifer with inadequate parameter support. Benefits to engineering practice include improved siting of monitors and tests from portrayal of the spatial organization, geometry, and variability of hydrostratigraphic units based on sedimentary architecture and environments of deposition. Hydrogeological modelling can be improved with better knowledge of the geometry of aquifers and aquitards and grid-cell boundaries that correspond with the defined sediment boundaries that control properties. The hydraulic conductivity of six compacted tills from northern Quebec with different grain-size distributions has been studied in saturated conditions in the laboratory. The results show that compaction conditions play an important role in hydraulic conductivity. When considering the hydraulic conductivities of specimens compacted at degrees of saturation greater than the optimum, there is a good correlation with the content of clay-size particles. This paper provides a good practical tool for evaluating preliminary hydraulic conductivity values of compacted tills from northern Quebec on the basis of their grain-size distribution and compaction conditions.Key words: till, hydraulic conductivity, grain-size distribution, compaction conditions.La conductivité hydraulique de six tills du nord québécois présentant des granulométries différentes a été étudiée en conditions saturées, en laboratoire. The preconsolidation pressure and overconsolidation ratio profiles are the most important factors related to the mechanical behaviour of clay deposits. They are interpreted on the basis of a limited number of laboratory tests, but the near-continuous information provided by the piezocone can allow local data to be extrapolated to an entire site. Numerous methods have been proposed for relating piezocone data to preconsolidation pressure and the overconsolidation ratio, but their validity is still uncertain. In this paper, nine methods are compared on the basis of data collected on 31 sensitive clay sites in Quebec whose preconsolidation pressure profiles are well known. Each method is briefly presented and the most promising are identified. The paper presents the results of laboratory triaxial compression tests to study the stiffness of very loose Fraser River sands. The stiffness has been shown to be very dependent on the time of confinement prior to shearing and the stress ratio at which the sample is aged. Higher stress ratios resulted in very low initial moduli with no ageing, but the moduli increased by several hundred percent during the first 1000 min of ageing. For ageing at a stress ratio of 1.0 (i.e., isotropic ageing), the initial moduli were higher than those for ageing at high stress ratios, but the stiffness increased by only about 60% during the first 1000 min of ageing. The rate of stiffness increase was approximately linear with the logarithm of time up to ageing times of 10 000 min (>1 week). Ageing at any stress ratio resulted in reduced contractive volumetric strain during subsequent shearing, reflecting a change in soil structure during ageing. The dℇ[sub v] /dℇ[sub a] ratio under triaxial compression loading decreased as the ageing stress ratio increased. The results suggest that close attention must be paid to the age of laboratory samples prepared to study the stress–strain response of sands at strains up to about 0.1%, particularly in studies on loose sand.Key words: sands, ageing, creep, modulus.Cet article présente les résultats d'un programme d'essais en laboratoire pour étudier la rigidité de sables très lâches du fleuve Fraser au moyen d'essais de compression triaxiale. Des rapports de contraintes plus élevés ont donné des modules initiaux très faibles sans vieillissement, mais les modules ont augmenté de plusieurs 100 % au cours des mille premières minutes de vieillissement. Sous un vieillissement isotrope, les modules initiaux étaient plus élevés que pour des rapports de contraintes plus élevés mais la rigidité a augmenté de seulement environ 60 % durant les 1000 premières minutes de vieillissement. La vitesse d'augmentation de la rigidité était approximativement linéaire en fonction du logarithme du temps jusqu'à des temps de vieillissement de 10 000 minutes (>1 semaine). Le vieillissement sous n'importe quel rapport de contraintes a donné des déformations volumétriques de contraction réduites durant le cisaillement subséquent, ce qui indiquait un changement dans la structure du sol durant le vieillissement. Le rapport dℇ[sub v] /dℇ[sub a] sous chargement triaxial en compression a diminué lorsque le rapport de contraintes de vieillissement augmentait. This paper presents the results of an extensive field investigation of several instrumented road sections in the Province of Quebec, Canada. Falling-weight deflectometer tests, static load tests on embedded plates at different depths, large dynamic cone penetration (DCP) tests, and piezocone tests (CPTU) were performed to study the mechanical response of the pavement. A correlation between elastic deformation modulus inferred from the plate load tests and DCP penetration index was obtained for nine different sites. A correlation between the equivalent elastic modulus of uniform subgrade soils and piezocone tip resistance was also established using data from the falling-weight deflectometer. A procedure for calculating the deflection basin for any pavement system placed over a more complex subgrade stratigraphy was proposed using these correlations. The proposed procedure was validated on two sites and its performance was adequate, since the calculated deflection basins agreed well with the measured deflection basins.Key words: penetration test, piezocone, deflection, pavement, in situ.Cet article présente les résultats d'une étude élaborée sur le terrain de plusieurs sections de route instrumentées dans la Province de Québec, Canada. Des essais au déflectomètre à masse tombante, de chargement statique sur des plaques enfouies à différentes profondeurs, de pénétration dynamique d'un gros cône (DCP), et de piézocône (CPTU) ont été réalisés pour étudier la réponse mécanique de la chaussée. Une corrélation entre le module de déformation élastique déduit des essais de chargement de plaques et l'indice de pénétration DCP a été obtenue pour neuf sites différents. Une corrélation entre le module élastique équivalent des sols de fondations uniformes et la résistance en pointe du piézocône a aussi été établie au moyen des données du déflectomètre à masse tombante. En partant de ces corrélations, on a proposé une procédure pour calculer le bassin de déflexion pour n'importe quel système de chaussée reposant sur une stratigraphie d'infrastructure complexe. To analyze the effects of strain rate and viscoplastic strain on consolidation of natural clay, this paper presents a nonlinear viscoplastic model in which viscoplastic behaviour is modeled by a unique effective stress (σ'[sub v] ) – viscous strain (ℇ[sub v] ) – viscous strain rate (ℇ[sup ·] [sub v] ) relationship. The proposed model can consider the effects of strain rate and viscoplastic strain on consolidation, to take into account the difference in strain rate between laboratory and field conditions, and the combined processes of generation and dissipation of pore pressure during consolidation. This model can also predict the behaviour of clay during stepwise loading, constant rate of strain, and relaxation of effective stress. The predicted values using numerical analysis are compared with measured values in laboratory tests and in situ, under an embankment built on soft clay at Berthierville, Quebec. It is possible to estimate the consolidation behaviour of natural clay with reasonable accuracy using the proposed nonlinear viscoplastic model.Key words: consolidation, soft clay, strain rate, viscoplastic, relaxation.Dans le but d'analyser les effets de la vitesse de déformation et de la déformation viscoplastique sur la consolidation de l'argile naturelle, cet article présente un modèle viscoplastique non linéaire dans lequel le comportement est modélisé par une relation unique contrainte effective-déformation visqueuse-vitesse de déformation visqueuse σ'[sub v] – ℇ[sub v] – ℇ[sup ·] [sub v] . Le modèle proposé peut prendre en considération les effets de la vitesse de déformation et de la déformation viscoplastique sur la consolidation pour tenir compte de la différence dans les vitesses de déformation entre les conditions en laboratoire et sur le chantier, de même que les processus combinés de génération et de dissipation de la pression interstitielle durant la consolidation. Ce modèle peut aussi prédire le comportement de l'argile en incluant le chargement par étape, la vitesse de déformation constante, et la relaxation de la contrainte effective. Les valeurs prédites au moyen de l'analyse numérique sont comparées avec celles mesurées dans les essais en laboratoire et in situ sous un remblai construit sur de l'argile molle à Berthierville, Québec. Il est possible d'estimer le comportement en consolidation de l'argile naturelle avec une précision raisonnable au moyen du modèle viscoplastique non linéaire proposé.
