Warsaw is among European cities with the worst atmospheric air quality, mainly due to very high pollution emitted by the residential sector and road traffic. This results in high concentrations of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, often exceeding WHO standards. The paper discusses the current and expected effects of actions taken by the Warsaw authorities, to significantly improve air quality in the city. The policy directly addresses one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities). The analysis presented in the paper consists of two stages. The first, covering the years 2018–2029, deals with the ongoing Clean Air Program, which assumes primarily the reduction, and ultimately the complete elimination, of coal combustion in all heat sources of the residential sector. This sector is widely identified as the main source of urban air quality degradation, especially in Polish cities due to the dominant share of coal in the fuel mix. The second part of the corrective measures, covering the period 2024–2034, primarily concerns the reduction of nitrogen oxide pollution, mainly from traffic. The latter takes into account the expected effects of the introduction of a Low-emission Zone (LEZ) in the city center (launched in July 2024) and implemented in five two-year stages, in which car emission limits will be gradually tightened. According to the analysis results, the implementation of the Clean Air Program can result in about a 20% reduction in annual average PM2.5 concentrations by 2024, with a small (about 9%) reduction in NOx. At the same time, a significant reduction in NOx levels can be achieved by full implementation of the LEZ, especially within the zone boundaries (more than 50%). Due to the complex nature of the built environment, urban wind flow is unpredictable and characterised by high levels of turbulence and low mean wind speed. Yet, there is a potential for harnessing urban wind power by carefully integrating wind turbines within the built environment at the optimum locations. This requires a thorough investigation of wind resources to use the suitable wind turbine technology at the correct location—thus, the need for an accurate assessment of wind resources at the proposed site. This paper reviews the commonly used wind assessment tools for the urban wind flow to identify the optimum tool to be used prior to integrating wind turbines in urban areas. In situ measurements, wind tunnel tests, and CFD simulations are analysed and reviewed through their advantages and disadvantages in assessing urban wind flows. The literature shows that CFD simulations are favoured over other most commonly used tools because the tool is relatively easier to use, more efficient in comparing alternative design solutions, and can effectively communicate data visually. The paper concludes with recommendations on best practice guidelines for using CFD simulation in assessing the wind flow within the built environment and emphasises the importance of validating CFD simulation results by other available tools to avoid any associated uncertainties. The preparation phase of earthquakes (EQs) has been investigated by making full use of multi-parameter and multi-layer observations of EQ precursors, in order to better understand the lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling (LAIC) process. For this purpose, we chose a specific target EQ, the huge EQ of Fukushima-ken-oki EQ on 13 February 2021 (magnitude Mj = 7.3). We initially reported on EQ precursors in different physical parameters not only of the lithosphere, but also of the atmosphere and ionosphere (Hayakawa et al. followed by Akhoondzadeh et al. and Draz et al., both based on satellite observations). Our first two papers dealt with seven electromagnetic precursors in the three layers (with emphasis on our own ground-based observations in the atmosphere and lower ionosphere), while the second paper dealt with Swarm satellite observations of magnetic field, electron density, and GPS TEC in the ionosphere, and the third paper dealt only with climatological parameters on and above the Earth's surface (together with GPS TEC). We have extensively reviewed all of these results, and have coordinated the temporal evolutions of various physical parameters relevant to the LAIC system; we have sought to understand which hypothesis is more plausible in explaining the LAIC process. Then, we came to a conclusion that two possible LAIC channels seem to exist simultaneously for this EQ: a fast channel (nearly simultaneous responses on the ground and ionosphere), and a slow channel (or diffusion-type), with a time delay of a few to several days, in which the agent effects in the lithosphere and lowest atmosphere seem to propagate up to the ionosphere with a definite time delay. In the context of achieving the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the development of clean resources has become an essential strategic support for the low-carbon energy transition. This paper presents a method for the modal decomposition and reconstruction of time series to enhance the prediction accuracy and performance regarding the 70 m wind speed. The experimental results indicate that the STL-VMD-BiLSTM hybrid algorithm proposed in this paper outperforms the STL-BiLSTM and VMD-BiLSTM models in forecasting accuracy, particularly in extracting nonlinearity characteristics and effectively capturing wind speed extremes. Compared with other machine learning algorithms, including the STL-VMD-LGBM, STL-VMD-SVR and STL-VMD-RF models, the STL-VMD-BiLSTM model demonstrates superior performance. The average evaluation criteria, including the RMSE, MAE and R2, for the proposed model, from t + 15 to t + 120 show improvements to 0.582–0.753 m/s, 0.437–0.573 m/s and 0.915–0.951, respectively. The fundamentals of the design and operation of self-priming pumps, as indispensable equipment in industry, have been the focus of research in the field of fluid mechanics. This paper begins with a comprehensive background on self-priming pumps and gas-liquid two-phase flow, and it outlines recent advances in the field. Self-priming pumps within the gas-liquid two-phase flow state and the spatial and temporal evolution of the transient characteristics of self-priming pumps determine the self-priming pump self-absorption performance. Through mastery of the self-absorption mechanism, high-performance self-absorption pump products can be formed to provide theoretical support for the development of products. In current research, numerical simulation has become an important tool for analyzing and predicting the behavior of gas-liquid two-phase flow in self-priming pumps. This paper reviews existing numerical models of gas-liquid two-phase flow and categorizes them. Reviewing these models not only provides us with a comprehensive understanding of the existing research but also offers possible directions for future research. The complexity of gas–liquid interactions and their impact on pump performance is analyzed. Through these detailed discussions, we are able to identify the challenges in the simulation process and summarize what has been achieved. In order to further improve the accuracy and reliability of simulations, this paper introduces the latest simulation techniques and research methodologies, which provide new perspectives for a deeper understanding of gas-liquid two-phase flow. In addition, this paper investigates a variety of factors which affect the operating efficiency of self-priming pumps, including the design parameters, fluid properties, and operating conditions. Comprehensive consideration of these factors is crucial for optimizing pump performance. Finally, this paper summarizes the current research results and identifies the main findings and deficiencies. The U.S. dairy sector is a significant emitter of methane and nitrous oxide, with the US EPA estimating it produced around 90 Tg CO2 eq. in 2021. This paper reviews the literature on and evaluates various mitigation actions for reducing GHG emissions in the U.S. dairy sector, focusing on both direct and indirect emission sources. We conducted a narrative literature review based on the cradle to gate life-cycle assessment method, covering the entire dairy supply chain up until milk enters retail establishments, including dairy and feed producing farm practices, processing, transportation, and their associated emissions/costs. The papers included were selected over a three year process depending on discussions with experts and issues mentioned in the emerging literature. We review significant opportunities for the U.S. dairy sector to reduce emissions, particularly through improved enteric fermentation and manure management practices. Additionally, we cover the potential for mitigating indirect emissions from feed production, processing, and transportation, areas less frequently covered in existing studies. This review also covers a gap in the literature by integrating economic findings including cost analysis and incentives to mitigate based on the social value of emissions reductions. Along with the rapid development of industries and the acceleration of urbanisation, the problem of air pollution is becoming more serious. Exploring the relevant factors affecting air quality and accurately predicting the air quality index are significant in improving the overall environmental quality and realising green economic development. Machine learning algorithms and statistical models have been widely used in air quality prediction and ranking assessment. In this paper, based on daily air quality data for the city of Xi'an, China, from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023, we construct support vector regression (SVR), gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), random forests (RF), neural network (NN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) models to analyse the influence of the air quality index for Xi'an and to conduct comparative tests. The predicted values and 95% prediction intervals of the AQI for the next 15 days for Xi'an, China, are given based on the Bootstrap-XGBoost algorithm. Further, the ordinal logit regression and ordinal probit regression models are constructed to evaluate and accurately predict the AQI ranks of the data from 1 October 2023 to 15 October 2023 for Xi'an. Awareness of the potential threat posed by drought necessitates the implementation of appropriate procedures to enable effective and systematic actions aimed at mitigating, or at least partially limiting, the impacts of drought events. This paper seeks to analyze the spatial and temporal changes of atmospheric drought in the period 1961–2020 and assesses drought hazards in southwest Bulgaria, which is a region susceptible to periodic water shortages. In this study, the standardized precipitation evaporation index (SPEI), accounting for both precipitation and temperature changes, was used to analyze drought characteristics. The analysis reveals significant temporal changes and spatial differences in drought patterns across southwest Bulgaria. The northeastern part of the region, including the Sofia district, exhibits the lowest risk of drought, while the central part of the region shows a tendency toward moderate and occasional low drought events. Some stations, particularly in the southern part of the region, consistently experienced more severe drought conditions (Blagoevgrad and Sandanski), as indicated by negative SPEI values in different time scales (3, 6, and 12 months). Results indicate an increased frequency of droughts during 1990–2020 compared to 1961–1990, which was driven by climate change and human activities. Across all stations and in both SPEI time scales, the period from the early to mid-1990s was characterized by significant droughts. The study of drought hazards using short-term and long-term SPEI analysis reveals different levels of drought risk and increased hazard from the northern to southern parts of the study area. The share of areas with a high drought hazard exceeds 40% of the territory in the areas with a transitional and continental-Mediterranean climate. Based on the results, the paper highlights the need to integrate drought risk assessments with regional planning to improve agricultural resilience and water resource management in response to anticipated droughts, especially in drought-prone areas such as southwest Bulgaria. The development and utilization of wind energy is of great significance to the sustainable development of China's economy and the realization of the "dual carbon" goal. Under typhoon conditions, the randomness and volatility of wind speed significantly impact the energy efficiency and design of wind turbines. This paper analyzed the changes in wind speed and direction using the BFAST method and Hurst index based on data collected at 10 m, 30 m, 50 m, and 70 m heights from a wind power tower in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. Furthermore, the paper examined the causes of wind speed and direction changes using wind speed near the typhoon center, distance from the typhoon center to the wind tower, topographic data, and mesoscale system wind direction data. The conclusions drawn are as follows: (i) Using the BEAST method, change points were identified at 10 m, 30 m, 50 m, and 70 m heights, with 5, 5, 6, and 6 change points respectively. The change points at 10 m, 30 m, and 50 m occurred around node 325, while the change time at 70 m was inconsistent with other heights. Hurst index results indicated stronger inconsistency at 70 m altitude compared to other altitudes. (ii) By analyzing the wind direction sequence at 10 m, 30 m, 50 m, and 70 m, it was found that the wind direction changes follow the sequence Southeast (SE)—East (E)—Southeast (SE)—Southwest (SW)—West (W)—Northwest (NW). Notably, the trend of wind direction at 70 m significantly differed from other altitudes during the wind speed strengthening and weakening stages. (iii) Wind speed at 10 m and 70 m altitudes responded differently to the distance from the typhoon center and the wind near the typhoon center. The correlation between wind speed and the distance to the typhoon center was stronger at 10 m than at 70 m. The surface type and the mesoscale system's wind direction also influenced the wind speed and direction. This study provides methods and theoretical support for analyzing short-term wind speed changes during typhoons, offering reliable support for selecting wind power forecast indicators and designing wind turbines under extreme gale weather conditions. This paper reviews current numerical developments for atmospheric modelling. Numerical atmospheric modelling now looks back to a history of about 70 years after the first successful numerical prediction. Currently, we face new challenges, such as variable and adaptive resolution and ultra-highly resolving global models of 1 km grid length. Large eddy simulation (LES), special applications like the numerical prediction of pollution and atmospheric contaminants belong to the current challenges of numerical developments. While pollution prediction is a standard part of numerical modelling in case of accidents, models currently being developed aim at modelling pollution at all scales from the global to the micro scale. The methods discussed in this paper are spectral elements and other versions of Local-Galerkin (L-Galerkin) methods. Classic numerical methods are also included in the presentation. For example, the rather popular second-order Arakawa C-grid method can be shown to result as a special case of an L-Galerkin method using low-order basis functions. Therefore, developments for Galerkin methods also apply to this classic C-grid method, and this is included in this paper. The new generation of highly parallel computers requires new numerical methods, as some of the classic methods are not well suited for a high degree of parallel computing. It will be shown that some numerical inaccuracies need to be resolved and this indicates a potential for improved results by going to a new generation of numerical methods. The methods considered here are mostly derived from basis functions. Such methods are known under the names of Galerkin, spectral, spectral element, finite element or L-Galerkin methods. Some of these new methods are already used in realistic models. The spectral method, though highly used in the 1990s, is currently replaced by the mentioned local L-Galerkin methods. All methods presented in this review have been tested in idealized numerical situations, the so-called toy models. Waypoints on the way to realistic models and their mathematical problems will be pointed out. Practical problems of informatics will be highlighted. Numerical error traps of some current numerical approaches will be pointed out. These are errors not occurring with highly idealized toy models. Such errors appear when the test situation becomes more realistic. For example, many tests are for regular resolution and results can become worse when the grid becomes irregular. On the sphere no regular grids exist, except for the five derived from Platonic solids. Practical problems beyond mathematics on the way to realistic applications will also be considered. A rather interesting and convenient development is the general availability of computer power. For example, the computational power available on a normal personal computer is comparable to that of a supercomputer in 2005. This means that interesting developments, such as the small sphere atmosphere with a resolution of 1 km and a spherical circumference between 180 and 360 km are available to the normal owner of a personal computer (PC). The Urban Heat Island phenomenon (UHI), characterized by elevated temperatures in urban areas compared to their rural surroundings, is highly exacerbated by urbanization and climate change. Understanding the complex relationship between UHI effect and urban form is crucial for effective urban planning and climate mitigation strategies. This paper examines the multifaceted connection between UHIs and urban forms, exploring various methods used to study this relationship. Through a review of the existing literature, we analyze the influence of various urban characteristics on the intensity and spatial distribution of UHIs. Furthermore, we discuss the key methods and technologies, such as remote sensing and modeling, used in advancing our understanding of UHI–urban form interactions. This study then delves into the literature on UHIs within the specific context of Morocco, identifying research gaps and emphasizing the need for more comprehensive research to address them. By translating study findings into actionable urban solutions, this paper suggests contextual mitigation strategies based on the research outcomes. Finally, by synthesizing current research findings and methodologies, this paper seeks to provide insights into the complexities of UHI dynamics and their implications for climate resilience, highlighting the potential of research for forging sustainable and climate-conscious planning strategies in Morocco and across the broader MENA region. Publicly available ionograms are often in the form of pictures. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for extracting and repairing the F layer traces from pictorial ionograms. Extensive efforts have been invested in ionogram autoscaling and critical parameter identification to improve the efficiency of scaling algorithms. To obtain the parameters of the F layer automatically, it is necessary to accurately extract the F layer trace. However, research on F layer trace extraction with repair is relatively limited. The method employed in this study makes full use of the characteristics of different types of echoes on the ionograms, and the procedure includes noise preprocessing, coupling noise processing, and trace repair. To enhance the applicability of the repair, two different automatic filling algorithms are adopted to repair the F layer trace. The aim of this paper is to present an adaptive algorithm to automatically extract and repair F layer traces from different pictorial ionograms. The accurate characterization of typhoon wind profile properties is of great importance in the field of wind engineering and wind design of high-rise structures. In this paper, the average typhoon wind profile characteristics are investigated using the 930 m height measurement data of Typhoon Lekima 2019 obtained from the observations of the mobile acoustic profiling radar deployed in the coastal area. Specifically, this paper adopts a cohesive hierarchical cluster analysis method to classify the mean wind profiles of Super Typhoon Lekima 2019, and the optimal number of clusters is obtained as two classes by the profile coefficient with the sum of squares of clustering errors, the Calinski–Harabasz index, and the Davies–Bouldin index, and the two classes of typical wind profiles are named as cluster 1 type and cluster 2 type. The model fitting analysis of the two types of typical wind profiles was carried out in the height range of 0~300 m after classification, and the effects of fitting the cluster 1-type mean wind profiles with the Vickery model and the Snaiki and Wu model and the cluster 2-type mean wind profiles with the Power-law model, the Log-law model, and the Deaves–Harris and Gryning models were discussed. The results show that the cohesive hierarchical cluster analysis method used in this paper can effectively categorize the mean typhoon profiles. In addition, this paper has some reference significance for future research on the characteristics of measured typhoon wind profiles and engineering applications such as the wind-resistant design of high-rise structures. The Upper Hunter Valley is a major coal mining area in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Due to the ongoing increase in mining activities, PM10 (air-borne particles with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 micrometres) pollution has become a major air quality concern in local communities. The present study was initiated to quantitatively examine the spatial and temporal variability of PM10 pollution in the region. An earlier paper of this study identified two air quality subregions in the valley. This paper aims to provide a holistic summarisation of the relationships between elevated PM10 pollution in two subregions and the local- and synoptic-scale meteorological conditions for spring and summer, when PM10 pollution is relatively high. A catalogue of twelve synoptic types and a set of six local meteorological patterns were quantitatively derived and linked to each other using the self-organising map (SOM) technique. The complex meteorology–air pollution relationships were visualised and interpreted on the SOM planes for two representative locations. It was found that the influence of local meteorological patterns differed significantly for mean PM10 levels vs. the occurrence of elevated pollution events and between air quality subregions. In contrast, synoptic types showed generally similar relationships with mean vs. elevated PM10 pollution in the valley. Two local meteorological patterns, the hot–dry–northwesterly wind conditions and the hot–dry–calm conditions, were found to be the most PM10 pollution conducive in the valley when combined with a set of synoptic counterparts. These synoptic types are featured with the influence of an eastward migrating continental high-pressure system and westerly troughs, or a ridge extending northwest towards coastal northern NSW or southern Queensland from the Tasman Sea. This paper proposes a ResGA-Net algorithm for cloud top height (CTH) retrieval using FY-4A satellite data. The algorithm utilizes genetic algorithms for data selection and employs a residual module-based neural network for modeling. It takes the spectral channel data from the FY-4A satellite as input features and uses CTH extracted from ground-based millimeter-wave cloud radar reflectivity as the target. By combining the large observation scale of the FY-4A satellite and the high accuracy of ground-based cloud radar observations, the model can generate satellite CTH products with higher precision. To validate the effectiveness of the algorithm, experiments were conducted using data from the Beijing area spanning from January 2020 to January 2022. The experimental results show that the metrics of the proposed ResGA-Net outperform those of various contrastive algorithms, and compared to the original FY-4A CTH product, the RMSE and MAE have decreased by 37.89% and 34.77%, while the PCC and SRCC have increased by 11.17% and 9.47%, respectively, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed method presented in this paper. The PIESAT-01 constellation is the world's first multi-baseline distributed synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellation with a "Cartwheel" formation. The "Cartwheel" formation is a unique formation in which four satellites fly in companion orbits, ensuring that at any given moment, the main satellite remains at the center, with three auxiliary satellites orbiting around it. Due to this unique configuration of the PIESAT-01 constellation, four images of the same region and six pairs of baselines can be obtained with each shot. So far, there has been no imaging and interference research based on four-satellite constellation measured data, and there is an urgent need to explore algorithms for the "Cartwheel" configuration imaging and digital surface model (DSM) production. This paper introduces an improved bistatic SAR imaging algorithm under the four-satellites interferometric mode, which solves the problem of multi-orbit nonparallelism in imaging while ensuring imaging coherence and focusing ability. Subsequently, it presents an interferometric processing method for the six pairs of baselines, weighted fusion based on elevation ambiguity from different baselines, to obtain a high-precision DSM. Finally, this paper selects the Dingxi region of China and other regions with diverse terrains for imaging and DSM production and compares the DSM results with ICESat-2 global geolocated photon data and TanDEM DSM data. The results indicate that the accuracy of PIESAT-01 DSM meets the standards of China's 1:50,000 scale and HRTI-3, demonstrating a high level of precision. Moreover, PIESAT-01 data alleviate the reliance on simulated data for research on multi-baseline imaging and multi-baseline phase unwrapping algorithms and can provide more effective and realistic measured data. Establishing reliable and effective prediction models is a major research priority for air quality parameter monitoring and prediction and is utilized extensively in numerous fields. The sample dataset of air quality metrics often established has missing data and outliers because of certain uncontrollable causes. A broad learning system based on a semi-supervised mechanism is built to address some of the dataset's data-missing issues, hence reducing the air quality model prediction error. Several air parameter sample datasets in the experiment were discovered to have outlier issues, and the anomalous data directly impact the prediction model's stability and accuracy. Furthermore, the correlation entropy criteria perform better when handling the sample data's outliers. Therefore, the prediction model in this paper consists of a semi-supervised broad learning system based on the correlation entropy criterion (CC-SSBLS). This technique effectively solves the issue of unstable and inaccurate prediction results due to anomalies in the data by substituting the correlation entropy criterion for the mean square error criterion in the BLS algorithm. Experiments on the CC-SSBLS algorithm and comparative studies with models like Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Regression (V-SVR), BLS, SSBLS, and Categorical and Regression Tree-based Broad Learning System (CART-BLS) were conducted using sample datasets of air parameters in various regions. In this paper, the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) are used to judge the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed model. Through the experimental analysis, RMSE and MAPE reached 8.68 μg·m−3 and 0.24% in the Nanjing dataset. Due to budget and sensor technology constraints, a single sensor cannot simultaneously provide observational images with both a high spatial and temporal resolution. To solve the above problem, the spatiotemporal fusion (STF) method was proposed and proved to be an indispensable tool for monitoring land surface dynamics. There are relatively few systematic reviews of the STF method. Bibliometrics is a valuable method for analyzing the scientific literature, but it has not yet been applied to the comprehensive analysis of the STF method. Therefore, in this paper, we use bibliometrics and scientific mapping to analyze the 2967 citation data from the Web of Science from 1991 to 2023 in a metrological manner, covering the themes of STF, data fusion, multi-temporal analysis, and spatial analysis. The results of the literature analysis reveal that the number of articles displays a slow to rapid increase during the study period, but decreases significantly in 2023. Research institutions in China (1059 papers) and the United States (432 papers) are the top two contributors in the field. The keywords "Sentinel", "deep learning" (DL), and "LSTM" (Long Short-Term Memory) appeared most frequently in the past three years. In the future, remote sensing spatiotemporal fusion research can address more of the limitations of heterogeneous landscapes and climatic conditions to improve fused images' accuracy. Airborne particulate matter (PM) is of great concern in the modern-day atmosphere owing to its association with a variety of health impacts, such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Of the various size fractions of PM, it is the finer fractions that are most harmful to health, in particular ultrafine particles (PM0.1; UFPs), with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 100 nm. The smaller size fractions, of ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5; fine particles) and ≤0.1 µm (PM0.1; ultrafine particles), have been shown to have numerous linkages to negative health effects; however, their collection/sampling remains challenging. This review paper employed a comprehensive literature review methodology; 200 studies were evaluated based on the rigor of their methodologies, including the validity of experimental designs, data collection methods, and statistical analyses. Studies with robust methodologies were prioritised for inclusion. This review paper critically assesses the health risks associated with fine and ultrafine particles, highlighting vehicular emissions as the most significant source of particulate-related health effects. While coal combustion, diesel exhaust, household wood combustors' emissions, and Earth's crust dust also pose health risks, evidence suggests that exposure to particulates from vehicular emissions has the greatest impact on human health due to their widespread distribution and contribution to air pollution-related diseases. This article comprehensively examines current sampling technologies, specifically focusing on the collection and sampling of ultrafine particles (UFP) from ambient air to facilitate toxicological and physiochemical characterisation efforts. This article discusses diverse approaches to collect fine and ultrafine particulates, along with experimental endeavours to assess ultrafine particle concentrations across various microenvironments. Following meticulous evaluation of sampling techniques, high-volume air samplers such as the Chem Vol Model 2400 High Volume Cascade Impactor and low-volume samplers like the Personal Cascade Impactor Sampler (PCIS) emerge as effective methods. These techniques offer advantages in particle size fractionation, collection efficiency, and adaptability to different sampling environments, positioning them as valuable tools for precise characterisation of particulate matter in air quality research and environmental monitoring. With China's rapid industrialization and urbanization in the process of socio-economic development, the extensive use of energy has resulted in a large amount of CO2 emissions, which puts great pressure on China's carbon emission reduction task. Through multivariate socio-economic data, this paper proposes an extraction and screening method of multivariate variables based on land-use types, and the downscaled spatial decomposition of carbon emissions at different scales was carried out by using the spatial lag model (SLM). This paper makes up for the shortcomings of previous studies, such as an insufficient modeling scale, simple modeling variables, limited spatio-temporal span of spatial decomposition, and no consideration of geographical correlation. Based on the results of the spatial decomposition of carbon emissions, this paper explores the spatial and temporal dynamics of carbon emissions at different scales. The results showed that SLM is capable of downscaling the spatialization of carbon emissions with high precision, and the continuity of the decomposition results at the provincial scale is stronger, while the differences of the decomposition results at the municipal scale are more obvious within the municipal units. In terms of the spatial and temporal dynamics of CO2 emissions, carbon emissions at both scales showed a significant positive correlation. The dominant spatial correlation types are "Low–Low" at the provincial level, and "Low–Low" and "High–High" at the municipal level. The smaller spatial scope is more helpful to show the geographic dependence and geographic differences of China's carbon emissions. The findings of this paper will help deepen the understanding of the spatial and temporal changes of carbon emissions in China. Europe and the Mediterranean are considered climate change hot spots. This is the reason why this paper focuses on the analysis of the trends of essential climate variables in a Mediterranean country, Greece. The analyzed period is 1991–2020, and the dataset used is ERA5-Land (produced by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), which has global coverage and an improved resolution of ~9 × 9 km compared to other datasets. Significant climatic changes across Greece have been put in evidence during the analyzed period. More specifically, the country averaged a 30-year trend of temperature of +1.5 °C, locally exceeding +2 °C, and this increasing trend is positively correlated with the distance of the areas from the coasts. Accordingly, the number of frost days has decreased throughout the country. In terms of rainfall, a major part of Greece has experienced increasing annual rainfall amounts, while 86% of the Greek area has experienced a positive trend of days with heavy rainfall (>20 mm). In light of the rapid Arctic warming and continuous reduction in Arctic Sea ice, the complex two-way Arctic–midlatitudes connection has become a focal point in recent climate research. In this paper, we review the current understanding of the interactive influence between midlatitude atmospheric variability and Arctic Sea ice or thermal conditions on interannual timescales. As sea ice diminishes, in contrast to the Arctic warming (cooling) in boreal winter (summer), Eurasia and North America have experienced anomalously cold (warm) conditions and record snowfall (rainfall), forming an opposite oscillation between the Arctic and midlatitudes. Both statistical analyses and modeling studies have demonstrated the significant impacts of autumn–winter Arctic variations on winter midlatitude cooling, cold surges, and snowfall, as well as the potential contributions of spring–summer Arctic variations to midlatitude warming, heatwaves and rainfall, particularly focusing on the role of distinct regional sea ice. The possible physical processes can be categorized into tropospheric and stratospheric pathways, with the former encompassing the swirling jet stream, horizontally propagated Rossby waves, and transient eddy–mean flow interaction, and the latter manifested as anomalous vertical propagation of quasi-stationary planetary waves and associated downward control of stratospheric anomalies. In turn, atmospheric prevailing patterns in the midlatitudes also contribute to Arctic Sea ice or thermal condition anomalies by meridional energy transport. The Arctic–midlatitudes connection fluctuates over time and is influenced by multiple factors (e.g., continuous melting of climatological sea ice, different locations and magnitudes of sea ice anomalies, internal variability, and other external forcings), undoubtedly increasing the difficulty of mechanism studies and the uncertainty surrounding predictions of midlatitude weather and climate. In this paper, we investigate and propose the application of an unsupervised machine learning clustering method to characterize the spatial and temporal distribution of ionospheric plasma irregularities over the Western African equatorial region. The ordinary Kriging algorithm was used to interpolate the rate of change of the total electron content (TEC) index (ROTI) over gridded 0.5° by 0.5° latitude and longitude regional maps in order to simulate the level of ionospheric plasma irregularities in a quasi-real-time scenario. K-means was used to obtain a spatial mean index through an optimal stratification of regional post-processed ROTI maps. The results obtained could be adapted by appropriate K-means algorithms to a real-time scenario, as has been performed for other applications. This method could allow us to monitor plasma irregularities in real time over the African region and, therefore, lead to the possibility of mitigating their effects on satellite-based location systems in the said region. In light of the growing demand for green and low-carbon development, the advancement of low-carbon agriculture in alignment with China's specific national circumstances is imminent. Given this urgency, the accounting of non-CO2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in China's agricultural system is still in the process of continuous research and improvement. Therefore, in this paper, we present an account of agricultural non-CO2 GHG emissions in Southwest China from 1995 to 2021, based on the carbon emission coefficient method. Furthermore, we explore the extent of the influence of the drivers and the relationship with economic development, utilizing the Stochastic Impact of Regression of Population, Affluence, and Technology (STIRPAT) model and the Tapio model. We observe a general trend of increasing and then decreasing non-CO2 GHG emissions from agriculture in the Southwest region, with a pattern of higher in the center and lower in the east and west. Economic, demographic, structural, and technological levels show different degrees of impact in different provinces, favoring the development of targeted agricultural planning policies in each region. For the majority of the study period, there was a weak or strong decoupling between economic growth and GHG emissions. Finally, recommendations are made to promote low-carbon agricultural development in Southwest China, providing a database and policy support to clarify the GHG contribution of the agricultural system. Changes in the jet stream not only affect the persistence of climate change and the frequency of extreme weather but are also closely related to climate change phenomena such as global warming. The manual way of drawing the jet stream axes in meteorological operations suffers from low efficiency and subjectivity issues. Automatic identification algorithms based on wind field analysis have some shortcomings, such as poor generalization ability, and it is difficult to handle merging and splitting. A semi-supervised learning jet stream axis identification method is proposed combining consistency learning and self-training. First, a segmentation model is trained via semi-supervised learning. In semi-supervised learning, two neural networks with the same structure are initialized with different methods, based on which pseudo-labels are obtained. The high-confidence pseudo-labels are selected by adding perturbation into the feature layer, and the selected pseudo-labels are incorporated into the training set for further self-training. Then, the jet stream narrow regions are segmented via the trained segmentation model. Finally, the jet stream axes are obtained with the skeleton extraction method. This paper uses the semi-supervised jet stream axis identification method to learn features from unlabeled data to achieve a small amount of labeled data to effectively train the model and improve the method's generalization ability in a small number of labeled cases. Experiments on the jet stream axis dataset show that the identification precision of the presented method on the test set exceeds about 78% for SOTA baselines, and the improved method exhibits better performance compared to the correlation network model and the semi-supervised method. Assessing air quality in urban areas is vital for protecting public health, and low-cost sensor networks help quantify the population's exposure to harmful pollutants effectively. This paper introduces an innovative method to calibrate air-quality sensor networks by combining CFD modeling with dependable AQ measurements. The developed CFD model is used to simulate traffic-related PM10 dispersion in a 1.6 × 2 km2 urban area. Hourly simulations are conducted, and the resulting concentrations are cross-validated against high-quality measurements. By offering detailed 3D information at a micro-scale, the CFD model enables the creation of concentration maps at sensor locations. Through regression analysis, relationships between low-cost sensor (LCS) readings and modeled outcomes are established and used for network calibration. The study demonstrates the methodology's capability to provide aid to low-cost devices during a representative 24 h period. The precision of a CFD model can also guide optimal sensor placement based on prevailing meteorological and emission scenarios and refine existing networks for more accurate urban air quality representation. The usage of cost-effective air quality networks, high-quality monitoring stations, and high-resolution air quality modeling combines the strengths of both top-down and bottom-up approaches for air quality assessment. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive solution aimed at enhancing our understanding of three-dimensional atmospheric pollutant dispersion. This innovative solution involves the development of a generalized model that extends previous research and is applicable to all parameterization schemes of these equations, including wind speed profiles and turbulent diffusion coefficients, while incorporating the dry deposition criterion. Our methodology involves subdividing the atmospheric boundary layer into distinct sub-layers, which facilitates a detailed examination of pollutant dispersion dynamics. Extensive validation with data from the Hanford experiment has demonstrated the accuracy of this solution in simulating pollutant concentrations. The results demonstrate that there is a strong correlation between the projected and observed concentrations, underscoring the statistical reliability of our approach. This validation situates the statistical indices of our solution within an acceptable range, confirming its accuracy in predicting atmospheric pollutant dispersion. The cause of the systematic daily march of barometric pressure in the tropics, notably the late morning and late evening peaks seen almost every day at all locations, was a puzzle that persisted through the nineteenth and much of the twentieth centuries. The efforts to explain the physics of the prominent 12-h solar tidal variation helped inspire some of the earliest developments in theoretical atmospheric dynamics and ultimately led in the 1960's to a satisfactory dynamical theory for the atmospheric tides. These important theoretical developments followed the observational discoveries, which date to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, of the surprising character of the barometric daily march and of its resolution into solar and lunar period cycles. These important, if simple, discoveries emerged primarily from the efforts of European scientists to systematically study the environment in remote areas of the globe. The two key figures in initially advancing the scientific community's understanding of the character of barometric tides were the great German polymath Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) and the French naturalist Robert de Lamanon (1752–1787), who each made their discoveries on their most famous and colorful scientific expeditions of their respective careers. Estimating the ocean's subsurface thermohaline information from satellite measurements is essential for understanding ocean dynamics and the El Niño phenomenon. This paper proposes an improved double-output residual neural network (DO-ResNet) model to concurrently estimate the subsurface temperature (ST) and subsurface salinity (SS) in the tropical Western Pacific using multi-source remote sensing data, including sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface height anomaly (SSHA), sea surface wind (SSW), and geographical information (including longitude and latitude). In the model experiment, Argo data were used to train and validate the model, and the root mean square error (RMSE), normalized root mean square error (NRMSE), and coefficient of determination (R2) were employed to evaluate the model's performance. The results showed that the sea surface parameters selected in this study have a positive effect on the estimation process, and the average RMSE and R2 values for estimating ST (SS) by the proposed model are 0.34 °C (0.05 psu) and 0.91 (0.95), respectively. Under the data conditions considered in this study, DO-ResNet demonstrates superior performance relative to the extreme gradient boosting model, random forest model, and artificial neural network model. Additionally, this study evaluates the model's accuracy by comparing its estimations of ST and SS across different depths with Argo data, demonstrating the model's ability to effectively capture the most spatial features, and by comparing NRMSE across different depths and seasons, the model demonstrates strong adaptability to seasonal variations. Phenolic compounds (PhCs) are aromatic compounds with benzene rings that have one or more hydroxyl groups. They are found or formed in the atmosphere due to various factors such as combustion processes, industrial emissions, oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other photochemical reactions. Due to properties such as relatively high Henry's law constants and moderate/high water solubility, PhCs are vulnerable to reactions in atmospheric liquid phase conditions with high relative humidity, fog or cloudy conditions. PhCs can lead to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), which can have negative effects on atmospheric conditions and human health. Changes in the optical properties of PhCs impact solar radiation absorption and scattering, potentially influencing climate. Additionally, PhCs may interact with other atmospheric constituents, potentially affecting cloud or fog formation and properties, which in turn can impact climate and precipitation patterns. Therefore, monitoring and controlling the emission of PhCs is essential. This paper discusses the transformation processes of PhCs in the atmosphere, including direct conversion of phenol, nitrate-induced and nitrite-induced reactions, hydroxylation reactions and oxidation processes involving triplet excited state organics, also providing a detailed analysis of the transformation processes. Sea fog is a hazardous natural phenomenon that reduces visibility, posing a threat to ports and nearshore navigation, making the identification of nearshore sea fog crucial. Millimeter-wave radar has significant advantages over satellites in capturing sudden and localized sea fog weather. The use of millimeter-wave radar for sea fog identification is still in the exploratory stage in operational fields. Therefore, this paper proposes a nearshore sea fog identification algorithm that combines millimeter-wave radar with multiple machine learning methods. Firstly, Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) is used to partition radar echoes, followed by the K-means clustering algorithm (KMEANS) to divide the partitions into recognition units. Then, Sea-Fog-Recognition-Convolutional Neural Network (SFRCNN) is used to classify whether the recognition units are sea fog areas, and finally, the partition coverage algorithm is employed to improve identification accuracy. The experiments conducted using millimeter-wave radar observation data from the Pingtan Meteorological Observation Base in Fujian, China, achieved an identification accuracy of 96.94%. The exposure of humans to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through fruits is a scarcely investigated topic. The atmospheric deposition of PAHs could contribute to such an issue. The present paper would like to propose an easy, fast, and routinary analytical method to extract and quantify PAHs in apples, pears, and grapes. Dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction allowed us to recover PAHs ranging between 68.0 ± 1.2 and 96.2 ± 0.8% from fruit. Gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector analysis showed satisfactory analytical parameters, with details like R2 > 0.9912 in a concentration range of 0.5–500 µg mL−1, with a variability ranging within 0.7–2.3%. Rural fruit samples were found to be more contaminated by PAHs compared to urban samples, likely due to the use of non-green fuels in rural areas considered in this study. Rainfall erosivity is a crucial factor in the evaluation of soil erosion, significantly influencing the complex relationships among water, soil, and the environment. Understanding its attributes and variations in space and time is essential for effective water resource management, erosion mitigation, and land-use planning. This paper utilizes daily precipitation data from 123 grid points in the Niyang River Basin, spanning from 2008 to 2016, to calculate rainfall erosivity using a straightforward algorithmic model. Ordinary Kriging was used to examine the spatial and temporal variations in rainfall erosivity, while Spearman's correlation analysis was employed to examine the relationships between annual rainfall erosivity and various factors, including multi-year average precipitation, erosive rainfall, dry-season rainfall, wet-season rainfall, temperature, and elevation. The results indicate a year-by-year increase in rainfall erosivity in the basin, with a trend towards stabilization. The average annual rainfall erosivity over the years is 711 MJ · m m · h m − 2 · h − 1 , peaking at 1098 MJ · m m · h m − 2 · h − 1 in 2014. A significant 93.9% of rainfall erosivity is concentrated in the wet season, with a maximum of 191 MJ · m m · h m − 2 · h − 1 in July. The left bank of the mainstream, especially the central and lower sections of the main river and its tributaries, experiences the highest rainfall erosivity. Rainfall factors predominantly influence erosivity, with erosive rainfall showing the strongest correlation (rho = 0.93), while temperature and elevation have relatively minor effects. This study enhances the understanding of rainfall erosive forces in the plateau region and provides a scientific basis for predicting soil loss, developing effective erosion control measures, and ensuring sustainable land use. The aim of this paper was to characterize the warm and dry compound events (WD days) in Poland during the period of 1966–2023, focusing on assessing the frequency and intensity of such events and their spatial and temporal variability, as well as on the driving factors of warm and dry compound events. WD days are those days that have a maximum temperature equal to or higher than the 90th percentile and the precipitation on that day and the 14 preceding days are equal to or less than the 25 percentile. During 1966–2023, the frequency of WD days increased significantly, mainly in April, the summer months, and December. Higher temperatures favored the occurrence of WD days from March to November, but, in winter months, the heat did not favor the occurrence of WD days. The exception was December, when high temperatures in the first part of the analyzed period did not favor the occurrence of a dry day, whereas, in the second part, it did. The strongest influence on the frequency of WD days had the East Atlantic pattern, where air flowed over Poland from the southwest. Warm and humid air flowing from the Atlantic Ocean must overcome the mountain barrier; therefore, it flows to Poland as warm and dry air. From spring to autumn, the WD days were related to an increase in the geopotential height in central Eastern Europe, and, in the winter, they were related with blocking over the Balkans. Jiangsu is a province in China and has the highest frequency of tornado occurrences. Studying the meteorological background and mechanisms of tornado formation is crucial for predicting tornado events and preventing the resulting disasters. This paper analyzed the meteorological background, instability mechanisms, and lifting conditions of the two Enhanced Fujita Scale level 2 (EF2) and above tornadoes that occurred in southern Jiangsu on 14 May 2021 ("5.14") and 6 July 2020 ("7.06") using ERA5 reanalysis data. Detailed analyses of the internal structure of tornado storms were conducted using Changzhou and Qingpu radar data. The results showed that (1) both tornadoes occurred in warm and moist areas ahead of upper-level troughs with significant dry air transport following the cold troughs. The continuous strengthening of low-level warm and moist advection was crucial in maintaining potential instability and triggering tornado vortices. The 14 May tornado formed within a low-level shear line and a warm area of a surface trough, while the 6 July tornado occurred at the end of a low-level jet stream, north of the eastern section of a quasi-stationary front. (2) The convective available potential energy (CAPE) and K indices for both tornado processes were very close (391 for "5.14" and 378 for "7.06"), with the lifting condensation level (LCL) near the ground. The "5.14" showed greater instability and more favorable thermodynamic conditions, with deep southwesterly jets at the mid-level shear line producing rotation under strong convergent action (convergence center value exceeding −1 ×   10 − 4 s − 1 ). In contrast, the "7.06" was driven by super-low-level jet stream pulsations and wind direction convergence under the influence of the Meiyu Front (convergence center value exceeding −1.5 ×   10 − 4   s − 1 ), resulting in intense lifting and vertical vorticity triggered by a surface convergence line. (3) The "5.14" tornado process involved a supercell storm over a surface dry line experiencing tilting due to strong vertical wind shear, which led to the formation of smaller cyclonic vortices near a hook echo that developed into a tornado. The "7.06" developed on a bow echo structure within a mesoscale convective system formed over the Meiyu Front, where dry air subsidence, entrainment, and convergence of the southeast jet stream triggered a "miniature" supercell. Forecasting in-flight icing conditions is crucial for aviation safety, particularly in regions with variable and complex meteorological configurations, such as Greece. Icing accretion onto the aircraft's surfaces is influenced by the presence of supercooled water in subfreezing environments. This paper outlines a methodology of forecasting icing conditions, with the development of the Icing Potential Algorithm that takes into consideration the meteorological scenarios related to icing accretion, using state-of-the-art Numerical Weather Prediction model results, and forming a fuzzy logic tree based on different membership functions, applied for the first time over Greece. The synoptic situation of an organized low-pressure system passage, with occlusion, cold and warm fronts, over Greece that creates dynamically significant conditions for icing formation was investigated. The sensitivity of the algorithm was revealed upon the precipitation, cloud type and vertical velocity effects. It was shown that the greatest icing intensity is associated with single-layer ice and multi-layer clouds that are comprised of both ice and supercooled water, while convectivity and storm presence lead to also enhancing the icing formation. A qualitative evaluation of the results with satellite, radar and METAR observations was performed, indicating the general agreement of the method mainly with the ground-based observations. Heavy-duty diesel vehicles are a significant source of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the atmosphere. The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system is a primary aftertreatment device for reducing NOx emissions from heavy-duty diesel vehicles. With increasingly stringent NOx emission regulations for heavy-duty vehicles in major countries, there is a growing focus on reducing NOx emissions under low exhaust temperature conditions, as well as monitoring the conversion efficiency of the SCR system over its entire lifecycle. By reviewing relevant literature mainly from the past five years, this paper reviews the development trends and related research results of SCR technology, focusing on two main aspects: low-temperature NOx reduction technology and the combination of SCR systems with remote On-Board Diagnostics (OBD). Regarding low-temperature NOx reduction technology, the results of the review indicate that the combination of multiple catalytic shows potential for achieving high conversion efficiency across a wide temperature range; advanced SCR system arrangement can accelerate the increase in exhaust temperature within the SCR system; solid ammonium and gaseous reductants can effectively address the issue of urea not being able to be injected under low-temperature exhaust conditions. As for the combination of SCR systems with remote OBD, remote OBD can accurately assess NOx emissions from heavy-duty vehicles, but it needs algorithms to correct data and match the emission testing process required by regulations. Remote OBD systems are crucial for detecting SCR tampering, but algorithms must be developed to balance accuracy with computational efficiency. CO2 is one of the primary greenhouse gases impacting global climate change, making it crucial to understand the spatiotemporal variations of CO2. Currently, commonly used satellites serve as the primary means of CO2 observation, but they often suffer from striping issues and fail to achieve complete coverage. This paper proposes a method for constructing a comprehensive high-spatiotemporal-resolution XCO2 dataset based on multiple auxiliary data sources and satellite observations, utilizing multiple simple deep neural network (DNN) models. Global validation results against ground-based TCCON data demonstrate the excellent accuracy of the constructed XCO2 dataset (R is 0.94, RMSE is 0.98 ppm). Using this method, we analyze the spatiotemporal variations of CO2 in China and its surroundings (region: 0°–60° N, 70°–140° E) from 2019 to 2020. Mobile observation has been widely used in the monitoring of air pollution. However, studies on pollution sources and emission characteristics based on mobile navigational observation are rarely reported in the literature. A method for quantitative source analysis for industrial air pollutant emissions based on mobile observations is introduced in this paper. NOx pollution identified in mobile observations is used as an example of the development of the method. A dispersion modeling scheme that fine-tuned the meteorological parameters according to the actual meteorological conditions was adopted to minimize the impact of uncertainties in meteorological conditions on the accuracy of small-scale dispersion modeling. The matching degree between simulated and observed concentrations was effectively improved through this optimization search. In response to the efficiency requirements of source resolution for multiple sources, a random search algorithm was first used to generate candidate solution samples, and then the solution samples were evaluated and optimized. Meanwhile, the new index S m a t c h was established to evaluate the quality of candidate samples, considering both numerical error and spatial distribution error of concentration, in order to address the non-uniqueness of the solution in the multi-source problem. Then, the necessity of considering the spatial distribution error of concentration is analyzed with the case study. The average values of NOx emission rates for the two study cases were calculated as 69.8 g/s and 70.8 g/s. The S m a t c h scores were 0.92–0.97 and 0.92–0.99. The results were close to the online monitoring data, and this kind of pollutant emission monitoring based on the mobile observation experiment was initially considered feasible. Additional analysis and clarifications were provided in the discussion section on the impact of uncertainties in meteorological conditions, the establishment of a priori emission inventories, and the interpretation of inverse calculation results. Oxygenated volatile organic compound (OVOC) emissions play a critical role in tropospheric ozone (O3) formation. This paper aims to establish an emission inventory and source profile database for OVOCs in Beijing, utilizing revised and reconstructed data from field measurements and existing literature. The study also assesses their potential impact on the O3 base on the ozone formation potential (OFP). Results indicate that OVOC emissions in Beijing predominantly originate from natural and residential sources, encompassing commercial solvent usage, cooking, residential combustion, construction adhesives, and construction coatings. OVOCs contributed 5.6% to OFP, which is significantly less than their emission contribution of 20.1%. Major OFP contributors include plant sources (26.2%), commercial solvent use (21.0%), cooking (20.5%), and construction adhesives (8.4%). The primary OVOC species contributing to OFP for OVOCs are acetaldehyde, methanol, hexanal, ethanol, and acetone, collectively contributing 59.0% of the total OFP. Natural sources exhibit significant seasonal variability, particularly in summer when plant emissions peak, constituting 78.9% of annual emissions and significantly impacting summer ozone pollution (OFP of 13,954 t). Conversely, emissions from other OVOC sources remain relatively stable year-round. Thus, strategies to mitigate summer ozone pollution in Beijing should prioritize plant sources while comprehensively addressing residential sources in other seasons. District-specific annual OVOC emissions are from Fangshan (3967 t), Changping (3958 t), Daxing (3853 t), and Chaoyang (3616 t), which reflect year-round forested areas in these regions and high populations. This paper is based on the keynote talk that I presented at the International Congress on Clouds and Precipitation (ICCP, 2021), wherein I was awarded a lifetime membership of ICCP. I focus on the invigoration of cumulus clouds by high concentrations of ice nuclei and hygroscopic aerosol. As far as ice nuclei are concerned, I discuss the hypothesized invigoration of cumulus clouds by seeding with high concentrations of ice nuclei or what has been called rainfall enhancement by means of "dynamic seeding". As to the effects of enhanced concentrations of hygroscopic aerosol on cumulus dynamics and rainfall, I discuss two mechanisms, (1) "mixed-phase invigoration" and (2) "condensational invigoration". I conclude that the concept of invigoration of convective clouds using high concentrations of hygroscopic aerosol by means of "condensational invigoration" is the dominant response of cumuli to enhanced concentrations of hygroscopic aerosol. Visibility is one of the key meteorological parameters with special importance in aviation meteorology and the transportation industry. Nevertheless, it is not a straightforward task to automatize visibility observations, since the assistance of trained human observers is still inevitable. The current paper attempts to make the first step in the process of automated visibility observations: it examines, by the approaches of artificial intelligence (AI), whether light points in the target area can or cannot be automatically detected for the purposes of night-time visibility observations. From a technical point of view, our approach mimics human visibility observation of the whole circular horizon by the usage of camera imagery. We evaluated the detectability of light points in the camera images (1) based on an AI approach (convolutional neural network, CNN) and (2) based on a traditional approach using simple binary thresholding (BT). The models based on trained CNN achieved remarkably better results in terms of higher values of statistical metrics, and less susceptibility to errors than the BT-based method. Compared to BT, the CNN classification method indicated greater stability since the accuracy of these models grew with increasing pixel size around the key points. This fundamental difference between the approaches was also confirmed through the Mann–Whitney U test. Thus, the presented AI-based determination of key points' detectability in the night with decent accuracy has great potential in the objectivization of everyday routines of professional meteorology. This paper examines the linear relationship between climate events in the La Plata Basin (LP) from 1980 to 2018 and atmospheric moisture transport from major sources using a Lagrangian approach. The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI-1) was utilized to assess climate events, as monthly water balance variations may be related to changes in atmospheric moisture transport. A total of 49 dry and 46 wet events were identified through sequences of negative and positive SPEI-1 values, respectively. Lagrangian analysis tracked changes in moisture uptake and supply from sources to the LP during these events. Simple linear regression analysis revealed a relationship between moisture transport from the Amazonas (AM), North Atlantic (NA), and Tocantins (TO) basins and the severity and duration of climate events. Increased moisture supply from the São Francisco basin (SF) and Eastern Brazil oceanic (EBO) sources intensified the duration and severity of wet events. Peak wet events were linked to increased moisture supply from the northern South America basins (AM, NA, and TO), while peak droughts were related to decreased moisture uptake from eastern sources (TO, SF, and EBO). This paper proposes a new post-processing method for model data in order to improve typhoon track and rainfall forecasts. The model data used in the article include low-resolution ensemble forecasts and high-resolution forecasts. The entire improvement method contains the following three steps. The first step is to correct the typhoon track forecast: three ensemble member optimization methods are applied to the low-resolution ensemble forecasts, and then the best optimization method is selected with the principle of the smallest average distance error. The results of rainfall forecasts show that the corrected rainfall forecast performs better than the original forecasts. The second step is to derive the high-resolution probability rainfall forecast: the neighborhood method is applied to the deterministic high-resolution rainfall forecast. The last step is to correct the typhoon rainfall forecast: the low- and high-resolution forecasts are blended using the probability-matching method with two different schemes. The results show that the forecasts of the two schemes perform better than the original forecast under all rainfall thresholds and all forecast lead times. In terms of bias score, a rain forecast from one scheme corrects the rainfall deviation from observation better for light and moderate rainfall, whereas a rain forecast from another scheme corrects the rainfall deviation better for heavy and torrential rainfall. As the second most predominant greenhouse gas, methane-targeted emission mitigation holds the potential to decelerate the pace of global warming. Satellite remote sensing is an important monitoring tool, and we review developments in the satellite detection of methane. This paper provides an overview of the various types of satellites, including the various instrument parameters, and describes the different types of satellite retrieval algorithms. In addition, the currently popular methane point source quantification method is presented. Based on existing research, we delineate the classification of methane remote sensing satellites into two overarching categories: area flux mappers and point source imagers. Area flux mappers primarily concentrate on the assessment of global or large-scale methane concentrations, with a further subclassification into active remote sensing satellites (e.g., MERLIN) and passive remote sensing satellites (e.g., TROPOMI, GOSAT), contingent upon the remote sensing methodology employed. Such satellites are mainly based on physical models and the carbon dioxide proxy method for the retrieval of methane. Point source imagers, in contrast, can detect methane point source plumes using their ultra-high spatial resolution. Subcategories within this classification include multispectral imagers (e.g., Sentinel-2, Landsat-8) and hyperspectral imagers (e.g., PRISMA, GF-5), contingent upon their spectral resolution disparities. Area flux mappers are mostly distinguished by their use of physical algorithms, while point source imagers are dominated by data-driven methods. Furthermore, methane plume emissions can be accurately quantified through the utilization of an integrated mass enhancement model. Finally, a prediction of the future trajectory of methane remote sensing satellites is presented, in consideration of the current landscape. Fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 µm ( P M 2.5 ) profoundly affects environmental systems, human health and economic structures. Multi-source data and advanced machine or deep-learning methods have provided a new chance for estimating the P M 2.5 concentrations at a high spatiotemporal resolution. In this paper, the Random Forest (RF) algorithm was applied to estimate hourly P M 2.5 of the North China area (Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, BTH) based on the next-generation geostationary meteorological satellite Himawari-8/AHI (Advanced Himawari Imager) aerosol optical depth (AOD) products. To improve the estimation of P M 2.5 concentration across large areas, we construct a method for co-weighting the environmental similarity and the geographical distances by using an attention mechanism so that it can efficiently characterize the influence of spatial–temporal information hidden in adjacent ground monitoring sites. In experiment results, the hourly P M 2.5 estimates are well correlated with ground measurements in BTH, with a coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) of 0.887, a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 18.31 μ g/ m 3 , and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 11.17 µg/ m 3 , indicating good model performance. In addition, this paper makes a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of multi-source data in the estimation process, in this way, to simplify the model structure and improve the estimation efficiency of the model while ensuring its accuracy. Upper air temperature measurements are critical for understanding weather patterns, boundary-layer processes, climate change, and the validation of space-based observations. However, there have been growing concerns over data discrepancies, the lack of homogeneity, biases, and discontinuities associated with historical climate data records obtained using these technologies. Consequently, this article reviews the progress of utilizing radiosondes and space-based instruments for obtaining upper air temperature records. A systematic review process was performed and focused on papers published between 2000 and 2023. A total of 74,899 publications were retrieved from the Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science databases using a title/abstract/keyword search query. After rigorous screening processes using relevant keywords and the elimination of duplicates, only 599 papers were considered. The papers were subjected to thematic and bibliometric analysis to comprehensively outline the progress, gaps, challenges, and opportunities related to the utilization of radiosonde and space-based instruments for monitoring upper air temperature. The results show that in situ radiosonde measurements and satellite sensors have improved significantly over the past few decades. Recent advances in the bias, uncertainty, and homogeneity correction algorithms (e.g., machine learning approaches) for enhancing upper air temperature observations present great potential in improving numerical weather forecasting, atmospheric boundary studies, satellite data validation, and climate change research. In the context of global climate change and rising sea levels, the adverse impacts of storm surges on the environment, economy, and society of affected areas are becoming increasingly significant. However, due to differences in geography, climate, and other conditions among the affected areas, a single method for assessing the risk of storm surge disasters cannot be fully applicable to all regions. To address this issue, an increasing number of new methods and models are being applied in the field of storm surge disaster risk assessment. This paper introduces representative traditional statistical methods, numerical simulation methods, and artificial intelligence-based techniques in this field. It compares these assessment methods in terms of accuracy, interpretability, and implementation difficulty. The paper emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate assessment methods based on specific conditions and scientifically combining various methods in practice to improve the accuracy and reliability of storm surge disaster risk assessments. This paper describes the metrological procedure carried out for the evaluation of the building influence on air temperature measurements. This evaluation aims to produce reliable conclusions, information, and data to contribute to the WMO siting classification schemes for air temperature measurements. For this purpose, a field experiment was designed, deployed, and carried out. As a result, one-year-lasting air temperature measurements were collected and analyzed. In this field experiment, a 200 m wide building is the unique artificial heat source and the unique object projecting shades over a flat surface (no discernible slope) in an open space bigger than 40,000 m2, covered with short grass. Eight calibrated thermometers, equipped with the same model of artificially ventilated radiation shields, were set up at a height of 1.5 m from the ground and at different distances from a 200 m wide building. This configuration provides the observation of the horizontal air temperature radially distributed from the building and, as a conclusion, it enables the quantification of the building influences on air temperature measurements at different distances from the building. This document describes the field experiment, the analysis procedure, the evolution of the building influence on air temperature measurements along the day, and the impact of other meteorological parameters on this building effect. Two different building effects are observed: the positive building effect, where the air temperature decreases with the distance to the building, and the negative building effect, where the air temperature increases with the distance to the building. It is also noticed that the building influence is higher on clear days and the daily maximum building influence values are directly linked with the corresponding maximum solar irradiance. The influence of wind on the building effect is also analyzed, reaching the conclusion that due to characteristic of local winds, in terms of low speed and direction, the wind impact could be considered as negligible. The maximum values of building influence on air temperature measurements, the associated uncertainty analysis, and the conclusions are presented in this paper. Existing sub-grid parameterization schemes for clear-sky direct solar radiation (SPS-CSDSR) assume that the sub-grid cells have the same atmospheric transparency. This study shows that in undulating terrain, significant errors can occur when the sub-grid is in turbid weather or partly above the cloud top. A correction factor was proposed. It can effectively eliminate errors under a cloudless sky and can reduce some errors when part of the sub-grid is above the cloud or fog top. For atmospheric models with high horizontal resolution, example test verification shows that the cast shadowless coverage method can lead to large errors. It should no longer be used based on current computing power. These improvements and the high-precision fast terrain occlusion algorithm in Part I will allow SPS-CSDSR to achieve unprecedented high accuracy. Based on the proposed daily interpolation method, the high-precision SPS-CSDSR is also feasible for regional climate simulation. The analysis pointed out that the sub-grid terrain radiative effect (STRE) is distributed over inclined surfaces with larger areas and at different heights. Existing methods of coupling STRE on one flat surface have certain physical drawbacks.
