Horniman Museum and Gardens, London published a group of visitor guides and handbooks from 1904 to 1977 under the series title "Horniman Museum and Library Publications" to accompany the permanent galleries. This paper presents a bibliography for the series, which covered subjects in zoology and anthropology. The series included 16 publications. Many had multiple editions. Authors were not always identified explicitly, and attribution was assigned to the institution. This paper identifies authors and other notable contributors for each volume. The Horniman stopped assigning new publications to the series at the end of the 1930s; however, new guides and handbooks continued to be published in similar fashion. Some of those later publications asserted continuity, claiming to be new editions. Others did not. Both continuities and breaks reveal aspects of work within the museum environment as well as trends in British museum engagement with its audiences. While much critical attention has been paid to the British Museum's early collections of natural history, less has been made of the way in which the items were catalogued and recorded. This paper will examine how information was organized within the Museum from its inception in 1753 to 1836, following the publication of the second Report from the Select Committee on the condition, management and affairs of the British Museum. Drawing on the Museum's avian collections as a case study, it will become apparent that while the Trustees and staff recognized the need for detailed catalogues of their natural history collections, their attention and resources were diverted from this task for various reasons during the early years of the Museum. Martin Hinrich Carl Lichtenstein from the Zoologische Museum Berlin went to London in 1819 to bid at the auction of William Bullock's museum. Lichtenstein acquired 175 bird specimens at the sale. The paper provides historical data relating to Lichtenstein's London visit as well as information on selected avian specimens obtained for the Zoologische Museum Berlin at Bullock's auction.
