The paper highlights the prevalence of predatory journals and conferences that damage science and research across all knowledge branches. They are characterized by rapid acceptance and publication, aggressive email marketing, lack of quality control, and charge hefty Article Processing Charges (APC) (for journal articles) and registration fees (for conference papers) from the authors. They thrive on the ignorance and naivety of early-stage, inexperienced, ambitious, and ingenuous researchers who have to adhere to publications' mandatory institutional requirements. Unfortunately, the senior researchers, despite knowing the downsides, publish, and present their research findings in predatory journals and conferences. The paper recommends that regulatory and funding bodies ensure that no credit or funding is given to publish and present in predatory journals and conferences. Libraries have a significant role to play - they should spread awareness among the researchers about the detrimental effect of fake publishing and conferencing; educate researchers about how to differentiate between bogus, fake journals, conferences, and the genuine ones. The paper analyzes the research contributions by the faculty members of the Department of Physics, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Pune, Maharashtra, India for the period 1990-2014. Bibliographic and citation data were retrieved from Scopus database. Query statements covering all variations in the name of SPPU were used to search the database. Scopus indexed 1629 publications with 22618 citations for the period. Author keywords in Scopus database indicate that faculty members are working in core areas of physics as well as interdisciplinary subjects like chemistry, instrumentation sciences, engineering, etc. The year-wise analysis shows that research productivity of faculty member increased over the period. Faculty members published their research in core physics journals among which Journal of Applied Physics (72 papers) is the most preferred journal. The faculty members of the University have collaborated with scientists from USA, UK, Germany and Japan. Based on breast cancer research data obtained from Scopus multidisciplinary database, it is seen that with 6696 (1.82% global share) articles from India on breast cancer during 1975-2014, India ranks 12th in the world in terms of research paper output. About 80% of the Indian publications appeared during the period 2004-14. Hospitals are more productive with Tata Memorial Hospital publishing the highest number of papers during the period. The paper suggests differential metrics for estimation of change dynamics of major ICT fields using the bibliometric indicators (publication and citation count). It refers to research areas such as big data, computational biology, cloud computing, cyber-physical systems, embedded systems, information security, internet of things, human-machine systems, mobile computing, machine learning, machine-to-machine, multi-agent systems, neural networks, robotics, visualization, augmented reality, SDN, 5G, e-Governance, smart city and smart grid. As supplements to the known indicators, two kinds of integrated derivative-based indicators are suggested. The calculation of indicators is made and their time curve is given. The suggested indicators allow evidently expressing the changes in the dynamics of bibliometric indicators, which can be useful in prospectivity estimation of areas of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
