Engineering metal materials have been widely developed and applied in aviation, aerospace and biomedicine fields. Wettability improvement of these materials can alleviate problems caused by low adhesion and poor bioactivity, thereby facilitating their practical applications. Compared with other methods, atmospheric pressure cold plasma treatment has better versatility and can efficiently improve wettability without causing serious damages, and has therefore been widely used in polymer hydrophilization. However, when treating metal materials, the cold plasma may induce surface breakdown or have low efficiency. In this paper, we developed a new cold plasma jet by mixing oxygen into working gas to achieve high-efficiency and low-damage modification. When oxygen mixing ratio was 0.4 %, the cold plasma jet could modify TC4 titanium alloy surface to be superhydrophilic within 20 s, which was much more efficient than traditional plasma jet (120 s). We then further investigated the mechanism contributing to higher efficiency, and found that the oxygen-mixing plasma jet did not cause serious damages, while generating more polar groups by higher-concentration active particles, as confirmed by surface energy calculation and optical emission spectra. The IEC 61850 standard has driven the development of power systems Protection, Automation, and Control Systems (PACS) over the past years. Although it is well-known for its communication protocols, several concepts and features are underused. This paper presents a new engineering and validation methodology applying the IEC61850 standards concepts to optimize the project life cycle by standardizing and enhancing engineering and testing. An electrical specification has been defined according to the IEC 61850 data modeling, reducing misinterpretations at the specification and configuration stage. The proposed top-down configuration approach establishes a user's profile and product naming to eliminate the vendor's dependability. The validations were performed using modern commercial tools. The results show that the proposed methodology makes it possible to have a reliable engineering process where the output of the previous stage provides all required information is independent of the next one. The project naming approach makes it possible to validate the system integration based on the agnostic system specification files in an early project stage. Research shows a positive association between skilled migration and innovation. Related literature however is largely limited to the use of proxies such as patents, and publications. There is also a lack of attention to how innovation is accomplished in practices. This paper addresses these gaps with an examination of the innovative contributions made by immigrant engineers in Canada. Conceptually, informed by practice-based theories, it conceives innovation as a sociocultural and sociomaterial process that leads to the transformation of the object/motives of activities, i.e. the problem space to which actions are directed. Empirically, drawing on a thematic and situational analysis of the career accounts of 32 immigrant engineers, it shows that immigrants expand engineering practices by introducing, inter alias, new technologies, products, processes, policies and standards. It further traces the rise of the problem spaces, and the ways in which engineering objects and other practitioners are knotted into practices of innovation. It argues that while immigrants manage to introduce epistemic objects through continuous learning and knowledge translation, it is through the enrolment of other practitioners, and technologies and tools that relations of differences and power are (re)negotiated, and new ways of doing become amplified as innovation at work. Flexible conductive hydrogels (FCHs) have attracted widespread interest as versatile monoliths that can be intricately integrated with various ingredients boasting multiple functionalities. The chemicophysical properties of FCHs cover a wide range, which significantly vary in their building blocks. However, achieving both favorable mechanical strength and high conductivity simultaneously through a facile approach remains a challenge. Herein, polyvinyl alcohol, dialdehyde cellulose nanofibrils, silver nanoparticles, borax, and tannic acid are readily "one-pot" incorporated into FCHs with great tensile stress (499 kPa), tensile strain (4591 %), and compressive stress (269 kPa) due to abundant hydrogen bonding, dynamic borate-diol bonding, and intermolecular acetalization. They also exhibit desired self-healing, generalized-adhesive, and antibacterial performances. Taking advantage of these, FCHs are further employed to support an epidermal sensor, on which remarkable strain sensitivity (gauge factor = 8.22), high-pressure sensitivity (≥ 0.258 kPa−1), and fast response (≤ 190 ms) are recorded. Its highly adaptive mechano-electric transformability and functions can be well maintained in serving as an array unit and touch screen pen. Nature- and society-inspired metaheuristic algorithms have recently become the most promising technological model. To solve more complex optimization problems and complicated engineering applications, this paper proposes a new people duality psychological tendency and feedback mechanism-based Inherited Optimization Algorithm(IOA), which is inspired by people showing positive-negative duality cognitive tendency and adaptive feedback behavior when selecting information resources with different identity attributes. The IOA algorithm contains the symmetric two exploration phases. The exploitation phase adaptively regulates the dualistic psychological balance of people in inheriting the information resources with better existence value through a feedback regulation mechanism controlled by the profitability awareness to increase population diversity. This paper qualitatively and quantitatively evaluates the optimization performance of IOA on 84 benchmarks, including swarm convergence behavior, effectiveness, convergence, robustness, and significance. The scalability of the IOA is investigated using the CEC2017 suites. The algorithm performance in solving constrained optimization is verified on 8 engineering problems. All statistical results of the IOA are compared with the most promising 12 metaheuristics, which shows that the absolute computational efficiency of IOA on four types of functions is 95%, 96.67%, 80.95%, and 76.92%, respectively, the average rank (rank sum ratio) of IOA is 1.08 (1.19%) among the 13 algorithms, ranking first. The Wilcoxon signed rank test results on the CEC2017 suites show that IOA contains 1437 significance indicators out of 1440 comparisons, with the proportion of significant differences 99.79%, which suggests the proposed IOA maintains efficient search efficiency. Ru is considered as highly efficient Pt-free catalyst in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its fast water dissociation kinetics. However, its strong affinity to OH* and H* greatly limits its HER performance. Herein, Ru nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on the mixed substrates of MoS 2 (different 1T contents) and carbon fiber paper (Ru@MoS 2 -1T%/CFP) is designed and synthesized with three kinds of interfaces (MoS 2 /CFP, Ru/CFP, and Ru/MoS 2) as excellent electrocatalyst for HER. Particularly, the Ru 2 @MoS 2 -85%/CFP presents superb HER performance with overpotential of 19 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 29 mV dec–1 and stability of up to 10 days, outperforming reported Ru-based catalysts and Pt/C. The experimental and DFT studies disclose that the hydroxyl migration-assisted dissociation of water and interface-engineering desorption of H 2 process, occurring at the mutually hybridized interface sites of Ru/MoS 2 /CFP, simultaneously speed Volmer/Tafel processes. Compared to Ru, the stronger interaction of 1T-MoS 2 to OH* makes OH* migrate from Ru to MoS 2 , alleviating the poisoning of Ru sites. Also, only Ru NPs close to the interface of 1T-MoS 2 /CFP can achieve an optimal hydrogen adsorption energy for high HER performance. The literature on laboratory objectives in engineering education research is scattered and inconsistent. Systematic literature reviews identified the need for better understanding. This paper ranks the laboratory learning objectives across the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains to improve scaffolding. It provides an opportunity for reflection, a pathway to confirm assessment alignment, and opens future research areas. To accomplish this, the Laboratory Learning Objectives Measurement (LLOM) instrument is used to survey 160 academics from around the world representing 18 engineering disciplines. The results suggest that the collective ranking order does represent a framework that can be used broadly. However, for greater alignment with consensus thinking, discipline rankings should be used. The cognitive domain was deemed the most important. These results provide the community's opinion and may not necessarily be best practice, providing an opportunity for reflection. Architectural education shares much in common with engineering, including the use of a culminating capstone experience in the final year. The form of this experience varies, with the research-based thesis and final-year project being most common. This paper explores the literature on traditions of enquiry and the meaning of research in various fields and the evolution of the 'thesis' and 'final year project' approaches over time. It then briefly summarises empirical research conducted on a case study institution struggling to bridge gaps in understandings of these distinct forms of learning and teaching. Throughout, the paper presents a comprehensive set of diagrams to explain various paradigms and positions on research and design education. These diagrams depict processes used in architecture, engineering, and natural sciences to conduct research and generate designs. • Data-centric water engineering is emerging as a new paradigm for water research and practice. • The data pipeline is powered by AI for knowledge and insight extraction from data. • The new paradigm embraces three principles – data, integration and decision making. Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to transform many scientific disciplines, with the potential to significantly accelerate scientific discovery. This perspective calls for the development of data-centric water engineering to tackle water challenges in a changing world. Building on the historical evolution of water engineering from empirical and theoretical paradigms to the current computational paradigm, we argue that a fourth paradigm, i.e., data-centric water engineering, is emerging driven by recent AI advances. Here we define a new framework for data-centric water engineering in which data are transformed into knowledge and insight through a data pipeline powered by AI technologies. It is proposed that data-centric water engineering embraces three principles – data-first, integration and decision making. We envision that the development of data-centric water engineering needs an interdisciplinary research community, a shift in mindset and culture in the academia and water industry, and an ethical and risk framework to guide the development and application of AI. We hope this paper could inspire research and development that will accelerate the paradigm shift towards data-centric water engineering in the water sector and fundamentally transform the planning and management of water infrastructure. The ability of Engineering graduates to function as successful professionals depends not only on technical disciplinary knowledge but also on a wide range of professional competencies. Students’ often react differently to educators attempts to develop professional competencies compared to technical competencies. Understanding the nature of these reactions is important if we are to design the most effective educational approaches to the development of professional competencies. In this paper we report on an exploratory factor analysis that used data from a detailed survey of students (N = 339) to identify underlying factors that provide insights to understand the variations in student reactions. A set of five factors were identified from this analysis: capability; learning experience; learning outcomes; employment experience; environment. Two of these factors (learning experience and environment) also exhibited significant differences in the impact between professional and technical competencies. In this paper, the Ru/RuS 2 nanoparticles as dual co-catalysts were self-assembled on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 nanotubes (Ru/RuS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 NTs) for photocatalytic H 2 production. The Ru/RuS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 NTs showed greatly enhanced photocatalytic H 2 production activity (1409 μmol·g−1·h−1), 1.16 times of RuS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 NTs (1212 μmol·h−1·g−1), 10.51 times of Ru/g-C 3 N 4 NTs (134 μmol·g−1·h−1), and 82.88 times of the pure g-C 3 N 4 NTs (17 μmol·g−1·h−1). Besides, the apparent quantum yield value (AQE) of Ru/RuS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 NTs is 3.92% at 370 nm. Ru/RuS 2 as dual co-catalysts are self-assembled on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 NTs and show strong electronic synergistic interaction between the interfaces, reduce Δ G H* of RuS 2 and desorption energy of Ru, and promote the selectivity and activity of HER kinetically and thermodynamically respectively, which exhibits higher photogenerated carrier concentration and lower charge migration resistance than RuS 2 and Ru, showing the synergistic effect to facilitate the generation and migration of carriers and provides active sites for photocatalysis. • By controlling the concentration of Li-ions, the phase composition of high entropy oxide (HEO) can be regulated. • A high concentration of point defects (i.e., oxygen vacancies) and extended defects (such as dislocations and stacking faults) can be introduced into the spinel phase. • Successful control over defect engineering in spinel-rocksalt dual-phase HEO has been achieved through phase-selective regulation. • The incorporation of an intergrown interface improves the conductivity and structural stability of electrode materials. This paper presents the effectiveness of phase-selective regulation in the Mg-Co-Ni-Mn-Zn-O-based spinel-rocksalt dual-phase high entropy oxide (HEO) for achieving novel electrochemical properties. The key factor distinguishing spinel from rocksalt in response to Li-ion incorporation is the separation of ions at tetrahedral sites, which offers greater structural adjustability and enables incoordinate defect regulation of individual phases. The optimized Li incorporation facilitates a high concentration of point defects (specifically oxygen vacancies) and appropriately extended defects (such as dislocations and stacking fault) in the spinel phase, accompanied by a spinel-rocksalt intergrown interface. These exquisite adjustments improve the conductivity, structural stability, and specific capacity of the HEO electrode material. Nevertheless, the ever-increasing Li content triggers the transformation from a spinel-rocksalt dual-phase HEO to a single-phase rocksalt HEO, resulting in serious lattice distortion and excessive defects that hinder the efficient transport of Li-ion, ultimately leading to unsatisfactory electrochemical performance. Thus, phase-selective engineering facilitates the determination of appropriate defects that synergistically interact with the intergrown interface and the dual-phase structure. The optimized HEO20 exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance, with a high initial discharge capacity of 2049.8 mAh g−1 at 0.1C and a high-rate capability of 502.9 mAh g−1 at 2C. The X-structure has been used for vibration isolation due to its nonlinear characteristic. Here, the use of an inerter-based X-structure vibration isolator is proposed to improve the dynamic performance of the traditional X-structure vibration isolator by exploiting the mass amplification characteristic of the inerter while satisfying the lightweight design requirement. Based on the arrangement of the inerter and X-structure, transverse-mounted, series-connected and parallel-connected inerter-based X-structure vibration isolators are designed. The relevant dynamic equations for these isolators are established using the Lagrange principle, their dynamic responses are obtained using the harmonic balance method and pseudoarc-length method, and their isolation performances are evaluated by three performance indices and compared with those of the X-structure and traditional linear vibration isolators. The results show that the transverse-mounted inerter-based X-structure vibration isolator has nonlinear inertial, nonlinear conservative forcing and nonlinear stiffness characteristics and that the series-connected and parallel-connected inerter-based X-structure vibration isolators have linear inertial and nonlinear stiffness characteristics. The transverse-mounted and parallel-connected inerter-based X-structure vibration isolators have a smaller relative dynamic displacement peak, absolute dynamic displacement peak, absolute displacement transmissibility peak and resonance frequency and wider isolation frequency band than the X-structure isolator, and only the high-frequency absolute displacement transmissibility is larger for the transverse-mounted and parallel-connected inerter-based X-structure vibration isolators. A series-connected inerter-based X-structure vibration isolator can isolate a relatively low-frequency vibration because of the antiresonance frequency and thus can improve the high-frequency absolute displacement transmissibility, while the relative dynamic displacement peak, absolute dynamic displacement peak and absolute displacement transmissibility peak are larger for the series-connected inerter-based X-structure vibration isolator than for the X-structure isolator. The parallel-connected inerter-based X-structure vibration isolator exhibits the best isolation performance and the transverse-mounted inerter-based X-structure vibration isolator exhibits the best shock performance among the four X-structure and linear vibration isolators studied. In addition, the experimental prototype of the inerter-based X-structure vibration isolator is built to test its performance, the theoretical and experimental results are compared to verify the validity of the theoretical modelling. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising technology that mainly utilizes microbial cells to convert CO2 into value-added chemicals using electrons provided by the cathode. However, the low electron transfer rate is a solid bottleneck hindering the further application of MES. Thus, as an effective strategy, genetic tools play a key role in MES for enhancing the electron transfer rate and diversity of production. We describe a set of genetic strategies based on fundamental characteristics and current successes and discuss their functional mechanisms in driving microbial electrocatalytic reactions to fully comprehend the roles and uses of genetic tools in MES. This paper also analyzes the process of nanomaterial application in extracellular electron transfer (EET). It provides a technique that combines nanomaterials and genetic tools to increase MES efficiency, because nanoparticles have a role in the production of functional genes in EET although genetic tools can subvert MES, it still has issues with difficult transformation and low expression levels. This paper examines the seismic response of buckling restrained braced frames (BRBFs) under near-field (NF) ground motions to obtain the interrelationships among different engineering demand parameters (EDPs). Several case study BRBFs with varying span lengths and heights are designed based on relevant US design standards. These study frames are numerically developed in the OpenSees platform, incorporating the applicable nonlinear characteristics of the pertinent structural components. Nonlinear time response analyses are conducted on the adopted frames under a suite of NF ground motion records, and the results are post-processed to obtain structural responses in the form of EDPs such as inter-storey drift ratio (IDR), residual drift ratio (RDR), maximum ductility demand (μ max), and cumulative ductility demand (μ cum). Regression relationships among EDPs are also explored. Subsequently, probabilistic seismic demand models are developed, and the resulting fragility curves are generated. The results from the study can display the approximate regression relationships among the adopted EDPs under NF records. Identifying RDR as the critical EDP that governs the BRBF response under NF seismic excitation, distinct damage state (DS) values are also proposed for the IDR, μ max, and μ cum to facilitate fragility curve development. There is a pressing requirement to design a simple battery thermal model that balances simulation accuracy regarding battery thermal characteristics and engineering application feasibility. The paper carries out the experimental study and model characterization of thermoelectric coupling characteristics of ternary lithium batteries with different shapes under ambient temperature conditions. The paper designs a characterization method of the battery thermoelectric coupling model. It conducts experiments to analyze the battery's charging and discharging characteristics and extracts essential modeling parameters. It reveals the differences in the modeling parameters of ternary lithium batteries with different shapes and constructs the thermoelectric coupling models of the square and 21700 cylindrical ternary lithium battery respectively. At the same time, the paper applies the model to carry out the simulation and experimental verification of the battery thermal behavior. The experimental data monitored by the infrared thermal imager and temperature sensors are compared with the simulation results. The errors are less than 5 %. The traditional approach to formulating building codes often is slow and labor-intensive, and may struggle to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology and domain findings. Overcoming such challenges necessitates a methodology that streamlines the modernization of codal provisions. This paper proposes a machine learning (ML) approach to append a variety of codal provisions, including those of empirical, statistical, and theoretical natures. In this approach, a codal provision (i.e., equation) is analyzed to trace its properties (e.g., engineering intuition and causal logic). Then a ML model is tailored to preserve the same properties and satisfy a collection of similarity and performance measures until declared equivalent to the provision at hand. The resulting ML model harnesses the predictive capabilities of ML while arriving at predictions similar to the codal provision used to train the ML model, and hence it becomes possible to use in lieu of the codal expression. This approach was examined successfully for seven structural engineering phenomena contained within various building codes, including those in North America and Australia. • A novel framework (MCMD) to classify days based on traffic state similarities measured across multiple traffic datasets. • MCMD outputs scale-invariant and scale-variant similarity-based classification labels and outliers. • A novel multi-view feature engineering algorithm is proposed for joint dimensionality reduction of traffic datasets. • Missing data is effectively handled by leveraging shared information across datasets. A common task in traffic data analysis and management is categorizing different days based on similarities in their network-wide traffic states. Given the multifaceted nature of traffic, it is essential to consider multiple attributes for a comprehensive quantification. However, challenges arise when combining these attributes to achieve consistent day-to-day classification across datasets. While various data-driven classification algorithms have been proposed in traffic literature, challenges persist. These include a) applicability limited to univariate datasets, b) incompatibility with datasets containing missing values, c) distance concentration problem in high-dimensional clustering, d) inability to classify outliers, and e) computationally expensive hyperparameter optimization. This research introduces the MCMD (Multi-view Classification based on Consensus Matrix Decomposition) framework, a novel approach for the joint classification of multi-view traffic data. MCMD treats multiple traffic datasets with varying geographical coverage as complementary views of the entire network's traffic state. It then extracts shared hidden features across these datasets and assigns each day classification labels that are consistent across views. MCMD consists of three key modules: the novel Multi-view Uni-orthogonal Non-negative Matrix Factorization (MUNMF) algorithm, an outlier removal module, and the Ordering Points to Identify the Clustering Structure (OPTICS) algorithm. A logical integration of the above-stated modules enables MCMD to a) output scale-invariant (SI) and scale-variant (SV) classifications and b) identify outlier days based on the shape and scale of multi-view traffic-state profiles. Compared to existing clustering methods, the design of the MCMD algorithm offers greater versatility in handling both single- and multi-view datasets for SI and SV clustering, computational robustness to missing data, and resilience to the "distance concentration problem" associated with the curse of dimensionality. These advantages stem from its ability to extract relevant cross-dataset features, reduce dimensionality, and eliminate redundancy. Although the primary motivation of the framework is derived from the need to develop a traffic pattern repository to support reliable prior Origin-Destination (OD) selection for online dynamic OD demand adjustment, the paper, through extensive experiments on real-world and synthetic traffic datasets, demonstrates the effectiveness of MCMD from several generic standpoints. This paper investigates the transport of drugs delivered by direct injection into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that fills the intrathecal space surrounding the spinal cord. Because of the small drug diffusivity, the dispersion of neutrally buoyant drugs has been shown in previous work to rely mainly on the mean Lagrangian flow associated with the CSF oscillatory motion. Attention is given here to effects of buoyancy, arising when the drug density differs from the CSF density. For the typical density differences found in applications, the associated Richardson number is shown to be of order unity, so that the Lagrangian drift includes a buoyancy-induced component that depends on the spatial distribution of the drug, resulting in a slowly evolving cycle-averaged flow problem that can be analysed with two-time scale methods. The asymptotic analysis leads to a nonlinear integro-differential equation for the spatiotemporal solute evolution that describes accurately drug dispersion at a fraction of the cost involved in direct numerical simulations of the oscillatory flow. The model equation is used to predict drug dispersion of positively and negatively buoyant drugs in an anatomically correct spinal canal, with separate attention given to drug delivery via bolus injection and constant infusion.

The statistical study of droplets in spray evaporation tower has guiding significance for understanding spray evaporation and designing drying tower. The key to spray evaporation simulation is establishing a suitable single droplet evaporation model through experiment. In this paper, a visualized single droplet evaporation experiment platform was established. The mass, diameter, and temperature during the evaporation of 10 % NaCl solution droplets were obtained. The Reaction Engineering Approach model was developed and validated to describe the single droplet evolution process in saline water spray. A comparison calculation between the spray evaporation of pure and saline water was executed, and the distributions of residence time of droplets were obtained. It reveals that droplets with initial diameters less than 117 μm can fully evaporate, and for larger droplets, pure water droplets represent a higher evaporation ratio. About 50 % of the fully evaporated saline droplets stay in the backflow area. Contrast numerical experiments of saline water spray evaporation were performed, concluded that similar performance can be attained with the same gas-liquid ratio, and excessive inlet air will reduce the residence time of droplets. Beer has over 600 flavor compounds and creates a positive tasting experience with acceptable sensory properties, which are essential for the best consumer experience. Spontaneous and mixed-culture fermentation beers, generally classified as sour beers, are gaining popularity compared to typical lager or ale styles, which have dominated in the USA for the last few decades. Unique and acceptable flavor compounds characterize sour beers, but some unfavorable aspects appear in conjunction. One such unfavorable flavor is called "mousy". This description is usually labeled as an unpleasant odor, identifying spoilage of fermented food and beverages. It is related as having the odor of mouse urine, cereal, corn tortilla chips, or freshly baked sour bread. The main compounds responsible for it are N-heterocyclic compounds: 2-acetyltetrahydropyridine, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, and 2-ethyltetrahydropyridine. The most common beverages associated with mousy off-flavor are identified in wines, sour beers, other grain-based beverages, and kombucha, which may contain heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria, acetic acid bacteria, and/or yeast/fungus cultures. In particular, the fungal species Brettanomyces bruxellensis are associated with mousy-off flavor occurrence in fermented beverages matrices. However, many factors for N-heterocycle formation are not well-understood. Currently, the research and development of mixed-cultured beer and non/low alcohol beverages (NABLAB) has increased to obtain the highest quality, sensory, functionality, and most notably safety standards, and also to meet consumers' demand for a balanced sourness in these beverages. This paper introduces mousy off-flavor expression in beers and beverages, which occurs in spontaneous or mixed-culture fermentations, with a focus on sour beers due to common inconsistency aspects in fermentation. We discuss and suggest possible pathways of mousy off-flavor development in the beer matrix, which also apply to other fermented beverages, including non/low alcohol drinks, e.g., kombucha and low/nonalcohol beers. Some precautions and modifications may prevent the occurrence of these off-flavor compounds in the beverage matrix: improving raw material quality, adjusting brewing processes, and using specific strains of yeast and bacteria that are less likely to produce the off-flavor. Conceivably, it is clear that spontaneous and mixed culture fermentation is gaining popularity in industrial, craft, and home brewing. The review discusses important elements to identify and understand metabolic pathways, following the prevention of spoilage targeted to off-flavor compounds development in beers and NABLABs.

Navigating the complex pavement system to the circular economy is a multi-dimensional and time-consuming endeavour. Obstructed by lock-in mechanisms of the prevailing "take-make-dispose" linear mode, the current circular economy studies in pavement infrastructure often focus only on one certain type of practice, featured by fragmentation from a system perspective. This study presents the first systematic literature review on the historical development trend of the circular economy concept in the pavement sector based on the collected 59 studies from 2006 to 2022. This review also identifies the soft (regulatory, social/environmental) and hard (technical, market/economic) drivers of- and barriers to the paradigm shift, aiming to coordinate the existing fragmented findings and facilitate the future systemic implementation of the circular economy. The synthesis of the results indicates that the underdeveloped technical guidance and legal system are inhibiting the paradigm shift to the circular economy. Furthermore, the authors argue that the importance of transparent and standardized data along the whole supply chain should be highlighted. This study demonstrates the effect of nitrogen doping on the surface state densities (Nss) of monolayer MoS2 and its effect on the responsivity and the response time of the photodetector. Our experimental results shows that by doping monolayer MoS2 by nitrogen, the surface state (Nss) increases thereby increasing responsivity. The mathematical model included in the paper supports the relation of photocurrent gain and its dependency on trap level which states that the increasing the trap density increases the photocurrent gain and the same is observed experimentally. The experimental results at room temperature revealed that nitrogen doped MoS2 have a high NSS of 1.63 X 1013 states/m2/eV compared to undoped MoS2 of 4.2 x 1012 states/m2/eV. The increase in Nss in turn is the cause for rise in trap states which eventually increases the value of photo responsivity from 65.12 A/W (undoped MoS2) to 606.3 A/W (nitrogen doped MoS2). The response time calculated for undoped MoS2 was 0.85 sec and for doped MoS2 was 0.35 sec. Finally, to verify the dependence of surface states on the responsivity, the surface states were varied by varying temperature and it was observed that upon increment in temperature, the surface states decreases which causes the responsivity values also to decrease. Hydrogen (H2) combustion and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can potentially reduce aviation-produced greenhouse gas emissions compared to kerosene propulsion. This paper outlines a methodology for evaluating performance and emission tradeoffs when retrofitting conventional kerosene-powered aircraft with lower-emissionH2 combustion and SOFC hybrid alternatives. The proposed framework presents a constant-range approach for designing liquid hydrogen fuel tanks, considering insulation, sizing, center of gravity, and power constraints. A lifecycle assessment evaluates greenhouse gas emissions and contrail formation effects for carbon footprint mitigation, while a cost analysis examines retrofit implementation consequences. A Cessna Citation 560XLS+ case study shows a 5% mass decrease for H2 combustion and a 0.4% mass decrease for the SOFC hybrid, at the tradeoff of removing three passengers. The lifecycle analysis of green hydrogen in aviation reveals a significant reduction in CO2 emissions for H2 combustion and SOFC systems, except for natural-gas-produced H2 combustion, when compared to Jet-A fuel. However, this environmental benefit is contrasted by an increase in fuel cost per passenger-km for green H2 combustion and a rise for natural-gas-produced H2 SOFC compared to kerosene. The results suggest that retrofitting aircraft with alternative fuels could lower carbon emissions, noting the economic and passenger capacity tradeoffs.

In this paper, a polarization-independent chain Huygens' metasurface is proposed. It is polarization multiplexing of two chain structures. Owing to the polarization-independent property, it can be conveniently applied to design double-layer dual-polarized transmitarray antennas (TAAs) with low profile. The measured results show that, for the designed low-profile dual-polarized TAA, its peak gain is 29.7 dBi at 28 GHz with aperture efficiency of 48.9 %, and the 3-dB gain bandwidths is 8.8 %. With the F/D ratio of only 0.36, the proposed low-profile dual-polarized TAA based on the chain Huygens' metasurface has critical applications in antenna engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Complex systems are difficult to manage, operate and maintain. This is why we see teams of highly specialised engineers in industries such as aerospace, nuclear and subsurface. Condition based monitoring is also employed to maximise the efficiency of extensive maintenance programmes instead of using periodic maintenance. A level of automation is often required in such complex engineering platforms in order to effectively and safely manage them. Advances in Artificial Intelligence related technologies have offered greater levels of automation but this potentially pivots the weight of decision making away from the operator to the machine. Implementing AI or complex algorithms into a platform can mean that the Operators' control over the system is diminished or removed altogether. For example, in the Boeing 737 Air Max Disaster, AI had been added to a platform and removed the operators' control of the system. This meant that the operator could not then move outside the extremely reserved, algorithm defined, "envelope" of operation. This paper analyses the challenges of AI driven condition based monitoring where there is a potential to see similar consequences to those seen in control engineering. As the future of society becomes more about algorithm driven technology, it is prudent to ask, not only whether we should implement AI into complex systems, but how this can be achieved ethically and safely in order to reduce risk to life. This paper aims to unify q-derivative/q-integrals and h-derivative/h-integrals into a single definition, called q − h -derivative/ q − h -integral. These notions are further extended on the finite interval [ a , b ] in the form of left and right q − h -derivatives and q − h -integrals. Some inequalities for q − h -integrals are studied and directly connected with well known results in diverse fields of science and engineering. This paper presents and evaluates a role-play simulation called 'Theatrical Technology Assessment', in which students learn about complex stakeholder dynamics around emerging technologies. This role-play combines insights from Constructive Technology Assessment, improvisational theatre and educational role-play designs. It was implemented in an online setting with bachelor students of an interdisciplinary engineering programme. Based on collected chat conversations and reflection reports in seven different simulations, we qualitatively analysed what students learned about stakeholder dynamics. The study shows that students gained novel and relevant insights regarding stakeholder perspectives on technologies, the effects of uncertainties on decision making, collective stakeholder dynamics, and strategies to steer technology development. Students considered the role-play simulations to be engaging learning experiences. The dual set-up of the role-play, with students as players and co-designers, and the integral use of improvisational theatre are novel elements of educational role-play designs. Pragmatists are interested primarily not in representing a purportedly unchanging Reality but in articulating prophetic future possibilities on the basis of the values most venerated by a culture/society in the present. This makes pragmatism sound a little like 'Conceptual Engineering'. Conceptual engineers too are interested in transforming our ways of talking, which implies some notion of how such improvements are to be evaluated. Nevertheless, this paper argues that accounts of conceptual engineering that regard it as key to the project of elucidating an externalist semantics find it difficult to accommodate on their own terms the problem-phenomena taken to be of shared interest: regions of discourse where the demand for change are at their most pressing culturally. This difficulty takes the form of what I call the Conceptual Engineering Dilemma (CED), an inability to accommodate simultaneously the ethical and ameliorative dimensions of contestation. I argue that acknowledging the formalist commitments that undergird CED should make pragmatism more appealing to the practically-orientated analytic philosopher and conclude with a brief survey of some of the tools that it makes available for the pressing work of changing minds for the better. This paper addresses the development of an equipment to teach fundamentals of industrial process control engineering mainly for undergraduate courses at the University of Extremadura. The School of Engineering and Technology of Central Queensland University focuses on the continuous development and innovation of best learning and teaching practices to increase student retention and improve their learning experiences. Face to face and distance learning (teaching delivery models) are fundamental aspects of providing quality support to the students' learning. One incredibly important aspect of students' learning is to provide relevant industry-related projects and applications of relevant simulation software to mimic the systems. This paper develops students' essential problem-solving skills and control strategies of fluid power systems in mechanical engineering through the Master of Engineering programs by employing Simulink, SimScape Fluid applications in Matlab software and Energy Plus with Design Builder. The main focus is to ensure that the students achieve the required skills of building fluid circuit models based on physical connections that directly integrate with appropriate symbols and modelling paradigms in fluid power applications to model the appropriate physical models to mimic the industrial fluid power projects selected. The basic ideas and content are to be delivered through weekly lectures and tutorial sessions, and the students' skills in fluid power systems and software are developed and monitored through weekly workshops scheduled for all projects. The key outcomes of this study are the level of understanding of fluid power systems, development of simulation skills using the software indicated, interpretation of the results the students have obtained and validations of those results. The students must show they have developed appropriate problem-solving skills using simulation software, professional presentation and effective team-building skills. Background: Despite its obvious relevance to computer science, computational thinking (CT) is transdisciplinary with the potential of impacting one's analytical ability. Although countless efforts have been invested across K‐12 education, there is a paucity of research at the postsecondary level about the extent to which CT can contribute to sustainable learning outcomes. Objectives: The current study examines how a series of Arduino‐based robotics learning activities capture the fuller essence of concepts related to CT. Methods: College students (n = 50) completed a series of six robotics learning activities. Think‐alouds, student reflections and performance scores were used to assess students' CT through a robotics challenge in virtual and physical learning environments. Results and Conclusions: Students verbalized CT concepts related to algorithmic thinking much more than abstraction, problem decomposition and testing and debugging. Students exposed to active learning performed better in a virtual robotics challenge compared to their peers in a traditional‐oriented classroom. Students' scores on the physical robotics challenge increased as a function of the number of references they made to CT concepts during the think‐alouds. It is possible to design pedagogical experiences that tap into various dimensions of CT at incremental levels of complexity through a series of Arduino‐based robotics activities. With the integration of an online simulation, students can visualize and transfer their CT skills between a virtual and physical learning environment, thus leading to more sustainable learning outcomes. Existing simplified procedures for evaluating soil liquefaction potential or for estimating excess pore pressures during earthquakes are typically based on undrained cyclic tests performed on saturated soil samples under controlled loading and boundary conditions. Under such conditions, the effect of excess pore pressure (ue) dissipation and redistribution to neighboring soil layers cannot be accounted for. Existing simplified procedures treat liquefiable layers as isolated soil layers without any boundary conditions even if dense and loose layers are very thin, permeable, and adjacent to each other. However, redistribution is likely to increase and decrease ue in the neighboring dense and loose layers respectively. Until now, no procedure short of fully coupled numerical analysis is available to estimate the importance of redistribution. This paper presents an approximate analytical procedure for assessing the effects of ue redistribution in (1) soil layers that would have liquefied if they were undrained, and (2) soil layers that would have not liquefied even if undrained. It is found that a layer that is initially assumed liquefied under undrained conditions might not even liquefy accounting for the ue redistribution to neighboring layers. On the other hand, a layer initially assumed to not liquefy can develop significant ue and can even liquefy due to pore pressure migration from the neighboring layers. Thus, accounting for redistributed ue is important for liquefaction consequence assessment quantification, particularly in systems that span the depth of these effects like deep foundations. Migration of u toward the tip of a pile can reduce its capacity, even if the tip is embedded in a dense sand layer. On the other hand, if redistribution can result in the reduction of ue in initially assumed liquefied layers, risks associated with liquefaction might be avoided. A criterion is also developed to evaluate the thicknesses of a layer below which redistribution could prevent liquefaction even if the layer is deemed liquefied according to the existing liquefaction-triggering procedures. Finally, the proposed procedure is illustrated by application to selected shaking events of centrifuge tests involving liquefaction of layered soil profiles. The predictions from the procedure matched the centrifuge test results reasonably.

With constantly changing political landscapes affecting the ability of college students with minoritized identities of sexuality and/or gender (MIoSG; Vaccaro et al., 2015) to thrive on campus, higher educators need to understand student reported stressors to design more inclusive learning environments. Building from minority stress theory and using data from a grounded theory study with 56 collegiate STEM students with MIoSG, this paper documents stressors that students reported as contributing to diminished wellbeing. We used constant comparative grounded theory analysis to identify stressors shared by all participants, which included lack of belonging and invisibility in competitive STEM cultures as well as exclusionary interactions with STEM peers. Solving a multiple-criteria optimization problem with severe constraints remains a significant issue in multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. The problem primarily stems from the need for a suitable constraint handling technique. One potential approach is balancing the search in feasible and infeasible regions to find the Pareto front efficiently. The justification for such a strategy is that the infeasible region also provides valuable information, especially in problems with a small percentage of feasibility areas. To that end, this paper investigates the potential of the infeasibility-driven principle based on multiple constraint ranking-based techniques to solve a multi-objective problem with a small feasibility ratio. By analyzing the results from intensive experiments on a set of test problems, including the realistic multi-objective car structure design and actuator design problem, it is shown that there is a significant improvement gained in terms of convergence by utilizing the generalized version of the multiple constraint ranking techniques. Conceptual engineering is the enterprise of evaluating and improving our representational devices. But how should we conduct this enterprise? One increasingly popular answer to this question proposes that conceptual engineering should proceed in terms of the functions of our representational devices. In this paper, we argue that the best way of understanding this suggestion is in terms of normative functions, where normative functions of concepts are, roughly, things that they allow us to do that matter normatively (for example, things in virtue of which we have normative reasons to have these concepts). Not only does this introduce a novel view about functions to the literature. This proposal also fits more naturally than the alternatives with conceptual engineering as a normative enterprise, and it allows functions to play all of the explanatory roles assigned to them in the conceptual engineering literature. Our discussion of the explanatory advantages of normative functions also advances the understanding of the ways in which concepts can be authoritative, what this means for conceptual engineering, and highlights the importance of political philosophy for thinking about conceptual engineering in practice. The European Nuclear Engineering Network Association (ENEN), later named European Nuclear Education Network, was created 20 years ago after concerns had been expressed by the nuclear industrial sector about the recruitment of qualified workforce. Networking between European universities and research centers appeared as a tool to attract more students in nuclear engineering by offering them various harmonized curricula and enhanced learning opportunities in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA). This was achieved by developing new programs in areas such as radiochemistry, radiation protection, nuclear safety engineering, geological disposal and radioactive waste management, and by offering important mobility opportunities for engineering education and training. Through its successive Framework Programs, the European Commission supplied an important financial support to ENEN projects: besides the mobility actions, around 40 thematic projects enabled to develop new products such as well-coordinated programs, learning platforms, and distance learning courses. The paper concludes with suggestions for the future. A suggested area for new inter-university co-operations is the strengthening of the academic programs in the field of the global energy approach for the benefit of decarbonization. This paper aims to design a guide for engineering problem solving with a mathematical approach, based on the use of creative, heuristic and reasoning strategies. The research is divided in two phases: the literature review and the conception of a guide for engineering problems with an open or closed solution. This guide combines the engineering method with algorithmic and heuristic-creative components in three steps: a) understanding, approaching and characterising the problem; b) planning, tackling and deciding on the best alternative; and c) solving, reviewing and evaluating the problem. This paper introduces an innovative approach to 3D environmental mapping through the integration of a compact, handheld sensor package with a two-stage sensor fusion pipeline. The sensor package, incorporating LiDAR, IMU, RGB, and thermal cameras, enables comprehensive and robust 3D mapping of various environments. By leveraging Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) and thermal imaging, our solution offers good performance in conditions where global positioning is unavailable and in visually degraded environments. The sensor package runs a real-time LiDAR-Inertial SLAM algorithm, generating a dense point cloud map that accurately reconstructs the geometric features of the environment. Following the acquisition of that point cloud, we post-process these data by fusing them with images from the RGB and thermal cameras and produce a detailed, color-enriched 3D map that is useful and adaptable to different mission requirements. We demonstrated our system in a variety of scenarios, from indoor to outdoor conditions, and the results showcased the effectiveness and applicability of our sensor package and fusion pipeline. This system can be applied in a wide range of applications, ranging from autonomous navigation to smart agriculture, and has the potential to make a substantial benefit across diverse fields.

Proton resonance frequency shift (PRFS) MR thermometry is the most common method used in clinical thermal treatments because of its fast acquisition and high sensitivity to temperature. However, motion is the biggest obstacle in PRFS MR thermometry for monitoring thermal treatment in moving organs. This challenge arises because of the introduction of phase errors into the PRFS calculation through multiple methods, such as image misregistration, susceptibility changes in the magnetic field, and intraframe motion during MRI acquisition. Various approaches for motion correction have been developed for real-time, motion-robust, and volumetric MR thermometry. However, current technologies have inherent trade-offs among volume coverage, processing time, and temperature accuracy. These tradeoffs should be considered and chosen according to the thermal treatment application. In hyperthermia treatment, precise temperature measurements are of increased importance rather than the requirement for exceedingly high temporal resolution. In contrast, ablation procedures require robust temporal resolution to accurately capture a rapid temperature rise. This paper presents a comprehensive review of current cutting-edge MRI techniques for motion-robust MR thermometry, and recommends which techniques are better suited for each thermal treatment. We expect that this study will help discern the selection of motion-robust MR thermometry strategies and inspire the development of motion-robust volumetric MR thermometry for practical use in clinics.
