Literature screening is the process of identifying all relevant records from a pool of candidate paper records in systematic review, meta-analysis, and other research synthesis tasks. This process is time consuming, expensive, and prone to human error. Screening prioritization methods attempt to help reviewers identify most relevant records while only screening a proportion of candidate records with high priority. In previous studies, screening prioritization is often referred to as automatic literature screening or automatic literature identification. Numerous screening prioritization methods have been proposed in recent years. However, there is a lack of screening prioritization methods with reliable performance. Our objective is to develop a screening prioritization algorithm with reliable performance for practical use, for example, an algorithm that guarantees an 80% chance of identifying at least 80 % of the relevant records. Based on a target-based method proposed in Cormack and Grossman, we propose a screening prioritization algorithm using sampling with replacement. The algorithm is a wrapper algorithm that can work with any current screening prioritization algorithm to guarantee the performance. We prove, with mathematics and probability theory, that the algorithm guarantees the performance. We also run numeric experiments to test the performance of our algorithm when applied in practice. The numeric experiment results show this algorithm achieve reliable performance under different circumstances. Analysing data from educational tests allows governments to make decisions for improving the quality of life of individuals in a society. One of the key responsibilities of statisticians is to develop models that provide decision-makers with pertinent information about the latent process that educational tests seek to represent. Mixtures of t $$ t $$ factor analysers (MtFA) have emerged as a powerful device for model-based clustering and classification of high-dimensional data containing one or several groups of observations with fatter tails or anomalous outliers. This paper considers an extension of MtFA for robust clustering of censored data, referred to as the MtFAC model, by incorporating external covariates. The enhanced flexibility of including covariates in MtFAC enables cluster-specific multivariate regression analysis of dependent variables with censored responses arising from upper and/or lower detection limits of experimental equipment. An alternating expectation conditional maximization (AECM) algorithm is developed for maximum likelihood estimation of the proposed model. Two simulation experiments are conducted to examine the effectiveness of the techniques presented. The gig economy and gig work have grown quickly in recent years and have drawn much attention from researchers in different fields. Because the platform mediated gig economy is a relatively new phenomenon, studies have produced a range of interesting findings; of interest here are the socio‐technical issues that this work has surfaced. This systematic literature review (SLR) provides a snapshot of a range of socio‐technical issues raised in the last 12 years of literature focused on the platform mediated gig economy. Based on a sample of 515 papers gathered from nine databases in multiple disciplines, 132 were coded that specifically studied the gig economy, gig work, and gig workers. Three main socio‐technical themes were identified: (1) the digital workplace, which includes information infrastructure and digital labor that are related to the nature of gig work and the user agency; (2) algorithmic management, which includes platform governance, performance management, information asymmetry, power asymmetry, and system manipulation, relying on a diverse set of technological tools including algorithms and big data analytics; (3) ethical design, as a relevant value set that gig workers expect from the platform, which includes trust, fairness, equality, privacy, and transparency. A social informatics perspective is used to rethink the relationship between gig workers and platforms, extract the socio‐technical issues noted in prior research, and discuss the underexplored aspects of the platform mediated gig economy. The results draw attention to understudied yet critically important socio‐technical issues in the gig economy that suggest short‐ and long‐term opportunities for future research directions. Traditional federated learning faces challenges such as high communication costs, structural heterogeneity,and insufficient privacy protection. To address these issues, this paper proposes a federated learning evolutionary algorithm that applies sparse evolutionary training algorithm to reduce communication costs and integrates local differential privacy protection for participants’ privacy. Additionally, it utilizes the NSGA-Ⅲ algorithm to optimize the network structure and sparsity of the global federated learning model, adjusting the relationship between data availability and privacy protection. This achieves a balance between the effectiveness, communication costs, and privacy of the global federated learning model. Experimental results under unstable communication environments demonstrate that, on the MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets, compared to the solution with the lowest error rate using the FNSGA-Ⅲ algorithm, the proposed algorithm improves communication efficiency by 57. 19% and 52. 17%, respectively. The participants also achieved（3. 46, 10-4） and（6. 52, 10-4）-local differential privacy. The rapid development of technology has resulted in a surge in the volume of digital data available. This situation creates a problem for users who need assistance in locating specific information within this massive collection of data, resulting in a time-consuming process. Automatic Text Summarization systems have been developed as a more effective solution than traditional summarization techniques to address this problem and improve user access to relevant information. It is well known that researchers in the health sciences find it difficult to keep up with the latest literature due to their busy schedules. This study aims to produce comprehensive abstracts of Turkish-language scientific papers in the field of health sciences. Although abstracts of scientific papers are already available, more thorough summaries are still needed. To the best of our knowledge, no previous attempt has been made to automatically summarize Turkish language health science papers. For this purpose, a dataset of 105 Turkish papers was collected from DergiPark. Term Frequency, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency, Latent Semantic Analysis, TextRank, and Latent Dirichlet Allocation algorithms were chosen as extractive text summarization methods due to their frequent use in this field. The performance of the text summarization models was evaluated using recall, precision, and F-score metrics, and the algorithms gave satisfactory results for Turkish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The term irritant-induced (occupational) asthma (IIA) has been used to denote various clinical forms of asthma related to irritant exposure at work. The causal relationship between irritant exposure(s) and the development of asthma can be substantiated by the temporal association between the onset of asthma symptoms and a single or multiple high-level exposure(s) to irritants, whereas this relationship can only be inferred from epidemiological data for workers chronically exposed to moderate levels of irritants. Accordingly, the following clinical phenotypes should be distinguished within the wide spectrum of irritant-related asthma: (i) definite IIA, that is acute-onset IIA characterized by the rapid onset of asthma within a few hours after a single exposure to very high levels of irritant substances; (ii) probable IIA, that is asthma that develops in workers with multiple symptomatic high-level exposures to irritants; and (iii) possible IIA, that is asthma occurring with a delayed-onset after chronic exposure to moderate levels of irritants. Office blood pressure measurement using mercury sphygmomanometer is the gold standard for making diagnoses of hypertension, evaluation of cardiovascular risk and estimation of obtained control of treated hypertensives. The vast majority of epidemiologic data are based on this method. However, the importance of blood pressure variability, white coat effect as well as availability of simple devices, home and ambulatory blood pressure measurements became routine parts in routine clinical work. As mercury will be soon forbidden in clinical work such devices and methodology will be even more important. In everyday clinical practice all three techniques should be implemented and in this paper advantages and drawbacks of all techniques are discussed. In the end, based on recent data and recommendations of international societies, diagnostic algorithm was proposed. Additionally, we described the technique of non-invasive central blood pressure measurement, determination of pulse wave velocity and calculation of augmentation index, new proposed risk factors.

This document is a special issue of the journal Algorithms, featuring selected papers from the journal's editorial board members from 2022 and 2023. We study the static and dynamic properties of networks of crumpled creases formed in hand crushed sheets of paper. The fractal dimensionalities of crumpling networks in the unfolded (flat) and folded configurations are determined. Some other noteworthy features of crumpling networks are established. The physical implications of these findings are discussed. Specifically, we state that self-avoiding interactions introduce a characteristic length scale of sheet crumpling. A framework to model the crumpling phenomena is suggested. Mechanics of sheet crushing under external confinement is developed. The effect of compaction geometry on the crushing mechanics is revealed.

Objective: The use of continuous intravenous regular human insulin (RHI) infusion is often necessary to achieve glycemic control in critically ill patients. Because insulin is a high-risk medication owing to the potential for severe hypoglycemia, it is imperative that insulin infusion algorithms are designed to be safe, effective, and instructionally clear. The safety and efficacy of our intravenous RHI infusion algorithm protocol has been previously established (Nutrition 2008;24:536-45); however, the protocol violations by nursing personnel were not examined. The objective of this study was to assess nursing adherence to our RHI infusion algorithm., Methods: Continuous RHI infusion algorithm violations were retrospectively evaluated in adult patients admitted to a trauma intensive care unit who received concurrent continuous enteral and/or parenteral nutrition therapy and our algorithm for at least 3 d. Blood glucose (BG) monitoring was done every 1 to 2 h with the target BG at 70 to 149 mg/dL (3.9 to 8.3 mmol/L). Nursing adherence to the RHI infusion protocol was evaluated for each patient by comparing the adjustments in insulin infusion rates documented by the nursing personnel with the prescribed adjustments per our graduated continuous intravenous RHI infusion algorithm., Results: A total of 4150 BG measurements necessitating the determination of the appropriate RHI dosage rate by nursing personnel in 40 patients occurred during the observational period. The target BG was achieved for a mean of 20 h/d and none of the patients had an episode of severe hypoglycemia (BG <40 mg/dL or 2.2 mmol/L). The overall rate of algorithm violations was 12.1%. The algorithm violations accounted for a single episode of mild to moderate hypoglycemia (BG 40 to 60 mg/dL or 2.2 to 3.3 mmol/L) in 4 patients and 65 total episodes of hyperglycemia (BG ≥150 mg/dL or 8.3 mmol/L) in 18 patients., Conclusion: An adherence rate of nearly 90% is indicative of excellent nursing adherence compared with other published paper-based algorithms that examined protocol adherence. There is increasing focus on applying deep learning methods to electrocardiograms (ECGs), with recent studies showing that neural networks (NNs) can predict future heart failure or atrial fibrillation from the ECG alone. However, large numbers of ECGs are needed to train NNs, and many ECGs are currently only in paper format, which are not suitable for NN training. We developed a fully-automated online ECG digitisation tool to convert scanned paper ECGs into digital signals. Using automated horizontal and vertical anchor point detection, the algorithm automatically segments the ECG image into separate images for the 12 leads and a dynamical morphological algorithm is then applied to extract the signal of interest. We then validated the performance of the algorithm on 515 digital ECGs, of which 45 were printed, scanned and redigitised. The automated digitisation tool achieved 99.0% correlation between the digitised signals and the ground truth ECG (n = 515 standard 3-by-4 ECGs) after excluding ECGs with overlap of lead signals. Without exclusion, the performance of average correlation was from 90 to 97% across the leads on all 3-by-4 ECGs. There was a 97% correlation for 12-by-1 and 3-by-1 ECG formats after excluding ECGs with overlap of lead signals. Without exclusion, the average correlation of some leads in 12-by-1 ECGs was 60–70% and the average correlation of 3-by-1 ECGs achieved 80–90%. ECGs that were printed, scanned, and redigitised, our tool achieved 96% correlation with the original signals. We have developed and validated a fully-automated, user-friendly, online ECG digitisation tool. Unlike other available tools, this does not require any manual segmentation of ECG signals. Interaction between proteins and nucleic acids is crucial to many cellular activities. Accurately detecting nucleic acid-binding residues (NABRs) in proteins can help researchers better understand the interaction mechanism between proteins and nucleic acids. Structure-based methods can generally make more accurate predictions than sequence-based methods. However, the existing structure-based methods are sensitive to protein conformational changes, causing limited generalizability. More effective and robust approaches should be further explored. In this study, we propose iNucRes-ASSH to identify nucleic acid-binding residues with a self-attention-based structure-sequence hybrid neural network. It improves the generalizability and robustness of NABR prediction from two levels: residue representation and prediction model. The pipeline of drug discovery consists of a number of processes; drug-target interaction determination is one of the salient steps among them. Computational prediction of drug-target interactions can facilitate in reducing the search space of experimental wet lab-based verifications steps, thus considerably reducing time and other resources dedicated to the drug discovery pipeline. While machine learning-based methods are more widespread for drug-target interaction prediction, network-centric methods are also evolving. The development and maintenance of the item bank is a critical element to a CD-CAT (cognitive diagnostic computerized adaptive testing; Cheng, 2009) system. For continuous testing, it is important to replenish the item bank with new items that have been calibrated. This requires pretesting to estimate the parameters of the new items. For CD-CAT, the structural parameters that need to be estimated include both item parameters and attribute vectors. In this paper, we propose three residual-statistic-based methods: RMA, ROEM, and RMEM, to estimate the attribute vectors and item parameters all together for new items. An iterative two-step online calibration procedure is developed to estimate the attribute vectors for the new items in the first step, and estimate the item parameters in the second step, then proceed iteratively until convergence is reached. An extensive simulation study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the three proposed methods and compare them with two existing methods, namely the Joint Estimation Algorithm (JEA; Chen & Xin, 2011) and Single Item Estimation (SIE; Chen et al., 2015) methods. In terms of the estimation of the attribute vector, the RMEM method performs the best in most of the cases. In terms of item parameter estimation, RMEM still has some advantages, and RMA outperforms JEA and SIE. Taken together, results suggest that the RMEM is superior to the other methods, especially when sample size is relatively small. Background: Radiation dose reduction has been the focus of many research activities in x-ray CT. Various approaches were taken to minimize the dose to patients, ranging from the optimization of clinical protocols, refinement of the scanner hardware design, and development of advanced reconstruction algorithms. Although significant progress has been made, more advancements in this area are needed to minimize the radiation risks to patients., Purpose: Reconstruction algorithm-based dose reduction approaches focus mainly on the suppression of noise in the reconstructed images while preserving detailed anatomical structures. Such an approach effectively produces synthesized high-dose images (SHD) from the data acquired with low-dose scans. A representative example is the model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR). Despite its widespread deployment, its full adoption in a clinical environment is often limited by an undesirable image texture. Recent studies have shown that deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) can overcome this shortcoming. However, the limited availability of high-quality clinical images for training and validation is often the bottleneck for its development. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to generate SHD with existing low-dose clinical datasets that overcomes both the noise texture issue and the data availability issue., Methods: Our approach is based on the observation that noise in the image can be effectively reduced by performing image processing orthogonal to the imaging plane. This process essentially creates an equivalent thick-slice image (TSI), and the characteristics of TSI depend on the nature of the image processing. An advantage of this approach is its potential to reduce impact on the noise texture. The resulting image, however, is likely corrupted by the anatomical structural degradation due to partial volume effects. Careful examination has shown that the differential signal between the original and the processed image contains sufficient information to identify regions where anatomical structures are modified. The differential signal, unfortunately, contains significant noise and has to be removed. The noise removal can be accomplished by performing iterative noise reduction to preserve structural information. The processed differential signal is subsequently subtracted from TSI to arrive at SHD., Results: The algorithm was evaluated extensively with phantom and clinical datasets. For better visual inspection, difference images between the original and SHD were generated and carefully examined. Negligible residual structure could be observed. In addition to the qualitative inspection, quantitative analyses were performed on clinical images in terms of the CT number consistency and the noise reduction characteristics. Results indicate that no CT number bias is introduced by the proposed algorithm. In addition, noise reduction capability is consistent across different patient anatomical regions. Further, simulated water phantom scans were utilized in the generation of the noise power spectrum (NPS) to demonstrate the preservation of the noise-texture., Conclusions: We present a method to generate SHD datasets from regularly acquired low-dose CT scans. Images produced with the proposed approach exhibit excellent noise-reduction with the desired noise-texture. Extensive clinical and phantom studies have demonstrated the efficacy and robustness of our approach. Image processing (IP) in digital radiography has been steadily refined to improve image quality. Adaptable settings enable users to adjust systems to their specific requirements. This prospective, analytical study aimed to investigate the influence of different IP settings and dose reductions on image quality. Included were 20 cadaveric equine limb specimens distal to the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints. Images were processed with the Dynamic Visualization II system (Fujifilm) using five different IP settings including multiobjective frequency processing, flexible noise control (FNC), and virtual grid processing (VGP). Seven criteria were assessed by three veterinary radiology Diplomates and one veterinary radiology resident in a blinded study using a scoring system. Algorithm comparison was performed using an absolute visual grading analysis. The rating of bone structures was improved by VGP at full dose (P < .05; AUC VGC  = 0.45). Überschwinger artifact perception was enhanced by VGP (P < .001; AUC VGC  = 0.66), whereas image noise perception was suppressed by FNC (P < .001; AUC VGC  = 0.29). The ratings of bone structures were improved by FNC at 50% dose (P < .05; AUC VGC  = 0.44), and 25% dose (P < .001; AUC VGC  = 0.32), and clinically acceptable image quality was maintained at 50% dose (mean rating 2.16; 95.8% ratings sufficient or better). The favored IP setting varied among observers, with higher agreement at lower dose levels. Data from natural sources show counter-intuitive distribution patterns for the leading digits to the left of the decimal point and the digit 1 is observed more frequently than all other numbers. This pattern, which was first described by Newcomb and later confirmed by Benford, is used in financial and tax auditing to detect fraud. Deviations from the pattern indicate possible falsifications. Anesthesiology journals are affected not only by ghostwriting and plagiarism but also by counterfeiting. In the present study 20 publications in anesthesiology known to be falsified by an author were investigated for irregularities with respect to Benford's law using the χ(2)-test and the Z-test. In the 20 retracted publications an average first-digit frequency of 243.1 (standard deviation SD ± 118.2, range: 30-592) and an average second-digit frequency of 132.3 (SD ± 72.2, range: 15-383) were found. The observed distribution of the first and second digits to the left of the decimal point differed significantly (p< 0.01) from the expected distribution described by Benford. Only the observed absolute frequencies for digits 3, 4 and 5 did not differ significantly from the expected values. In an analysis of each paper 17 out of 20 studies differed significantly from the expected value for the first digit and 18 out of 20 studies varied significantly from the expected value of the second digit. Only one paper did not vary significantly from expected values for the digits to the left of the decimal. For comparison, a meta-analysis using complex mathematical procedures was chosen as a control. The analysis showed a first-digit distribution consistent with the Benford distribution. Thus, the method used in the present study seems to be sensitive for detecting fraud. Additional statements of specificity cannot yet be made as this requires further analysis of data that is definitely not falsified. Future studies exploring conformity might help prevent falsified studies from being published.

The aim of this paper is to introduce and assess three algorithms for the identification of overlapping thematic structures in networks of papers. We implemented three recently proposed approaches to the identification of overlapping and hierarchical substructures in graphs and applied the corresponding algorithms to a network of 492 information-science papers coupled via their cited sources. The thematic substructures obtained and overlaps produced by the three hierarchical cluster algorithms were compared to a content-based categorisation, which we based on the interpretation of titles, abstracts, and keywords. We defined sets of papers dealing with three topics located on different levels of aggregation: h-index, webometrics, and bibliometrics. We identified these topics with branches in the dendrograms produced by the three cluster algorithms and compared the overlapping topics they detected with one another and with the three predefined paper sets. We discuss the advantages and drawbacks of applying the three approaches to paper networks in research fields.

We study the cyclic dominance of three species in two-dimensional constrained Newman-Watts networks with a four-state variant of the rock-paper-scissors game. By limiting the maximal connection distance Rmax in Newman-Watts networks with the long-range connection probability p , we depict more realistically the stochastic interactions among species within ecosystems. When we fix mobility and vary the value of p or Rmax, the Monte Carlo simulations show that the spiral waves grow in size, and the system becomes unstable and biodiversity is lost with increasing p or Rmax. These results are similar to recent results of Reichenbach et al. [Nature (London) 448, 1046 (2007)], in which they increase the mobility only without including long-range interactions. We compared extinctions with or without long-range connections and computed spatial correlation functions and correlation length. We conclude that long-range connections could improve the mobility of species, drastically changing their crossover to extinction and making the system more unstable.

The language of radiology has gradually evolved from "the film" (the foundation of radiology since Wilhelm Roentgen's 1895 discovery of x-rays) to "the image," an electronic manifestation of a radiologic examination that exists within the bits and bytes of a computer. Rather than simply storing and displaying radiologic images in a static manner, the computational power of the computer may be used to enhance a radiologist's ability to visually extract information from the image through image processing and image manipulation algorithms. Image processing tools provide a broad spectrum of opportunities for image enhancement. Gray-level manipulations such as histogram equalization, spatial alterations such as geometric distortion correction, preprocessing operations such as edge enhancement, and enhanced radiography techniques such as temporal subtraction provide powerful methods to improve the diagnostic quality of an image or to enhance structures of interest within an image. Furthermore, these image processing algorithms provide the building blocks of more advanced computer vision methods. The prominent role of medical physicists and the AAPM in the advancement of medical image processing methods, and in the establishment of the "image" as the fundamental entity in radiology and radiation oncology, has been captured in 35 volumes of Medical Physics.

We examined the quality of anticoagulation produced by two paper-based warfarin dosing algorithms in a randomized clinical trial of warfarin therapy. Fifty-eight patients were randomized to receive warfarin at a target international normalized ratio (INR) range of 2.1-3.0 and were followed for an average of 2.7 years. As a proportion of total patient-time, the percentage of time spent above, within, and below the therapeutic range was 11%, 71%, and 19% respectively. Fifty-six patients were randomized to receive warfarin at a higher target INR range (3.1-4.0) and had INRs within the therapeutic range for 40% of total patient time. We conclude that the performance, minimal cost, and ease-of-use of these algorithms make them well-suited for patient management within primary-care and research settings.

This paper promotes the concept of active models in image-guided interventions. We outline the limitations of the rigid body assumption in image-guided interventions and describe how intraoperative imaging provides a rich source of information on spatial location of anatomical structures and therapy devices, allowing a preoperative plan to be updated during an intervention. Soft tissue deformation and variation from an atlas to a particular individual can both be determined using non-rigid registration. Established methods using free-form deformations have a very large number of degrees of freedom. Three examples of deformable models--motion models, biomechanical models and statistical shape models--are used to illustrate how prior information can be used to restrict the number of degrees of freedom of the registration algorithm and thus provide active models for image-guided interventions. We provide preliminary results from applications for each type of model.

Purpose: It has been reported that the estimate of ultrasound attenuation coefficient (AC) is affected by depth of measurement, with linear decrease of values with depth. It is unknown whether backscatter coefficient (BSC) has similar behavior., Methods: This retrospective study was performed with Sequoia US system equipped with ultrasound derived fat fraction (UDFF) algorithm (Siemens Healthineers, Issaquah, WA, USA) that combines BSC with AC. UDFF was obtained positioning upper edge of the region of interest at 1.5,2,3,4,5 cm below liver capsule. BSC data were extracted from UDFF offline. A fractional polynomial regression, which selects the best model considering the polynomial development of the variables of interest, was used. Covariates included were age, sex, skin-to-liver-capsule distance, stiffness. Distance was included as linear factor or with a power ranging from - 2 to 3, and the best fitting model was chosen according to partial F test. Body mass index (BMI) was not included because of collinearity with skin-to-liver capsule distance., Results: 104 individuals (56 females; age: 57.9 ± 13.0 years; BMI: 29.0 ± 6.5 kg/m 2 ; skin-to-liver-capsule distance: 2.3 ± 0.7 cm; liver stiffness: 7.5 ± 5.5 kiloPascal) were studied. Best fitting model for BSC included a combination of depth as linear factor and square root. BSC showed a decrease of - 13.98 dB/cm-steradian for each logarithmic increase of 1 cm depth (coefficient: - 13.98; 95% CI: - 21.016; - 5.379; p = .001). Skin-to-liver-capsule distance and stiffness also were independent predictors of BSC., Conclusions: The estimation of the BSC in the liver exhibits a depth dependence that significantly affects results. Purpose: MR-STAT is a relatively new multiparametric quantitative MRI technique in which quantitative paramater maps are obtained by solving a large-scale nonlinear optimization problem. Managing reconstruction times is one of the main challenges of MR-STAT. In this work we leverage GPU hardware to reduce MR-STAT reconstruction times. A highly optimized, GPU-compatible Bloch simulation toolbox is developed as part of this work that can be utilized for other quantitative MRI techniques as well., Methods: The Julia programming language was used to develop a flexible yet highly performant and GPU-compatible Bloch simulation toolbox called BlochSimulators.jl. The runtime performance of the toolbox is benchmarked against other Bloch simulation toolboxes. Furthermore, a (partially matrix-free) modification of a previously presented (matrix-free) MR-STAT reconstruction algorithm is proposed and implemented using the Julia language on GPU hardware. The proposed algorithm is combined with BlochSimulators.jl and the resulting MR-STAT reconstruction times on GPU hardware are compared to previously presented MR-STAT reconstruction times., Results: The BlochSimulators.jl package demonstrates superior runtime performance on both CPU and GPU hardware when compared to other existing Bloch simulation toolboxes. The GPU-accelerated partially matrix-free MR-STAT reconstruction algorithm, which relies on BlochSimulators.jl, allows for reconstructions of 68 seconds per two-dimensional (2D slice)., Conclusion: By combining the proposed Bloch simulation toolbox and the partially matrix-free reconstruction algorithm, 2D MR-STAT reconstructions can be performed in the order of one minute on a modern GPU card. Objectives: This study was designed to investigate clinical differences between pediatric patients who presented with chest pain, tachycardia, and/or tachypnea who subsequently were or were not diagnosed with myocarditis. The results were used to develop a decision tree to aid in rapid diagnosis of pediatric myocarditis., Methods: A retrospective case-control study was performed using the electronic medical records of children aged 0 to 18 years between the years 2003 and 2020 with a complaint of chest pain, tachycardia, and/or tachypnea. Patients included in the study were those diagnosed with myocarditis and those with suspected myocarditis, which was ultimately ruled out. Demographic and clinical differences between the research groups were analyzed. A decision tree was rendered using the rpart (Recursive Partitioning and Regression Trees) package., Results: Four thousand one hundred twenty-five patients were screened for eligibility. Seventy-three myocarditis patients and 292 nonmyocarditis patients were included. Compared with the control group, the study group was found to have a higher mean respiratory rate (37 ± 23 vs 23 ± 7 breaths per minute) and mean heart rate (121 ± 44 vs 97 ± 25 beats per minute) and lower mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure (102 ± 27/56 ± 17 mm Hg vs 114 ± 14/67 ± 10 mm Hg). The mean white blood cell count was greater in the case group (13 ± 6 vs 10 ± 5 × 10 3 /μL). A decision tree was rendered using simple demographic and clinical variables. The accuracy of the algorithm was 85.2%, with 100% accuracy in patients aged 0 to 2.5 years and 69% in patients aged 2.5 to 18 years., Conclusion: The clinical and laboratory characteristics described in this study were similar to what is described in the literature. The decision tree may aid in the diagnosis of myocarditis in patients 2.5 years and younger. Cox models with time-dependent coefficients and covariates are widely used in survival analysis. In high-dimensional settings, sparse regularization techniques are employed for variable selection, but existing methods for time-dependent Cox models lack flexibility in enforcing specific sparsity patterns (ie, covariate structures). We propose a flexible framework for variable selection in time-dependent Cox models, accommodating complex selection rules. Our method can adapt to arbitrary grouping structures, including interaction selection, temporal, spatial, tree, and directed acyclic graph structures. It achieves accurate estimation with low false alarm rates. We develop the sox package, implementing a network flow algorithm for efficiently solving models with complex covariate structures. sox offers a user-friendly interface for specifying grouping structures and delivers fast computation. Estimating causal effects from large experimental and observational data has become increasingly prevalent in both industry and research. The bootstrap is an intuitive and powerful technique used to construct standard errors and confidence intervals of estimators. Its application however can be prohibitively demanding in settings involving large data. In addition, modern causal inference estimators based on machine learning and optimization techniques exacerbate the computational burden of the bootstrap. The bag of little bootstraps has been proposed in non-causal settings for large data but has not yet been applied to evaluate the properties of estimators of causal effects. In this article, we introduce a new bootstrap algorithm called causal bag of little bootstraps for causal inference with large data. The new algorithm significantly improves the computational efficiency of the traditional bootstrap while providing consistent estimates and desirable confidence interval coverage. We describe its properties, provide practical considerations, and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of bias, coverage of the true 95% confidence intervals, and computational time in a simulation study. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched Project Optimus to shift dose selection from the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) to the dose that produces the optimal risk-benefit tradeoff. One approach highlighted in the FDA's guidance involves conducting a randomized phase II trial following the completion of a phase I trial, where multiple doses (typically including the MTD and one or two doses lower than the MTD) are compared to identify the optimal dose that maximizes the benefit-risk tradeoff. This article focuses on the design of such a multiple-dose randomized trial, specifically the determination of the sample size. We generalized the standard definitions of type I error and power to accommodate the unique characteristics of dose optimization and derived a decision rule along with an algorithm to determine the optimal sample size. The resulting design is referred to as MERIT (Multiple-dosE RandomIzed Trial design for dose optimization based on toxicity and efficacy). Simulation studies demonstrate that MERIT has desirable operating characteristics, and a sample size between 20 and 40 per dosage arm often offers reasonable power and type I errors to ensure patient safety and benefit. Background: Quantification of metabolites concentrations in institutional unit (IU) is important for inter-subject and long-term comparisons in the applications of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Recently, deep learning (DL) algorithms have found a variety of applications on the process of MRS data. A quantification strategy compatible to DL base MRS spectral processing method is, therefore, useful., Materials and Methods: This study aims to investigate whether metabolite concentrations quantified using a convolutional neural network (CNN) based method, coupled with a scaling procedure that normalizes spectral signals for CNN input and linear regression, can effectively reflect variations in metabolite concentrations in IU across different brain regions with varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and linewidths (LW). An error index based on standard error (SE) is proposed to indicate the confidence levels associated with metabolite predictions. In vivo MRS spectra were acquired from three brain regions of 43 subjects using a 3T system., Results: The metabolite concentrations in IU of five major metabolites, quantified using CNN and LCModel, exhibit similar ranges with Pearson's correlation coefficients ranging from 0.24 to 0.78. The SE of the metabolites shows a positive correlation with Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) (r=0.46) and  absolute CRLB (r=0.81), calculated by multiplying CRLBs with the quantified metabolite content., Conclusion: In conclusion, the CNN based method with the proposed scaling procedures can be employed to quantify in vivo MRS spectra and derive metabolites concentrations in IU. Purpose: Clinical benefits result from electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) systems that enable remote symptom monitoring. Although clinically useful, real-time alert notifications for severe or worsening symptoms can overburden nurses. Thus, we aimed to algorithmically identify likely non-urgent alerts that could be suppressed., Methods: We evaluated alerts from the PRO-TECT trial (Alliance AFT-39) in which oncology practices implemented remote symptom monitoring. Patients completed weekly at-home ePRO symptom surveys, and nurses received real-time alert notifications for severe or worsening symptoms. During parts of the trial, patients and nurses each indicated whether alerts were urgent or could wait until the next visit. We developed an algorithm for suppressing alerts based on patient assessment of urgency and model-based predictions of nurse assessment of urgency., Results: 593 patients participated (median age = 64 years, 61% female, 80% white, 10% reported never using computers/tablets/smartphones). Patients completed 91% of expected weekly surveys. 34% of surveys generated an alert, and 59% of alerts prompted immediate nurse actions. Patients considered 10% of alerts urgent. Of the remaining cases, nurses considered alerts urgent more often when patients reported any worsening symptom compared to the prior week (33% of alerts with versus 26% without any worsening symptom, p = 0.009). The algorithm identified 38% of alerts as likely non-urgent that could be suppressed with acceptable discrimination (sensitivity = 80%, 95% CI [76%, 84%]; specificity = 52%, 95% CI [49%, 55%])., Conclusion: An algorithm can identify remote symptom monitoring alerts likely to be considered non-urgent by nurses, and may assist in fostering nurse acceptance and implementation feasibility of ePRO systems., (© 2024. Contemporary pose estimation methods enable precise measurements of behavior via supervised deep learning with hand-labeled video frames. Although effective in many cases, the supervised approach requires extensive labeling and often produces outputs that are unreliable for downstream analyses. Here, we introduce 'Lightning Pose', an efficient pose estimation package with three algorithmic contributions. First, in addition to training on a few labeled video frames, we use many unlabeled videos and penalize the network whenever its predictions violate motion continuity, multiple-view geometry and posture plausibility (semi-supervised learning). Second, we introduce a network architecture that resolves occlusions by predicting pose on any given frame using surrounding unlabeled frames. Third, we refine the pose predictions post hoc by combining ensembling and Kalman smoothing. Together, these components render pose trajectories more accurate and scientifically usable. Objective: The Visiopharm artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm for oestrogen receptor (ER) immunohistochemistry (IHC) in whole slide images (WSIs) has been successfully validated in surgical pathology. This study aimed to assess its efficacy in cytology specimens., Methods: The study cohort comprised 105 consecutive cytology specimens with metastatic breast carcinoma. ER IHC WSIs were seamlessly integrated into the Visiopharm platform from the Image Management System (IMS) during our routine digital workflow, and an AI algorithm was employed for analysis. ER AI scores were compared with pathologists' manual consensus scores. Optimization steps were implemented and evaluated to reduce discordance., Results: The overall concordance between pathologists' scores and AI scores was excellent (99/105, 94.3%). Six cases exhibited discordant results, including two false-negative (FN) cases due to abundant histiocytes incorrectly counted as negatively stained tumour cells by AI, two FN cases owing to weak staining, and two false-positive (FP) cases where pigmented macrophages were erroneously counted as positively stained tumour cells by AI. The Pearson correlation coefficient of ER-positive percentages between pathologists' and AI scores was 0.8483. Optimization steps, such as lowering the cut-off threshold and additional training using higher input magnification, significantly improved accuracy., Conclusions: The automated ER AI algorithm demonstrated excellent concordance with pathologists' assessments and accurately differentiated ER-positive from ER-negative metastatic breast carcinoma cytology cases. One of the most widely used measures of scientific impact is the number of citations. However, due to its heavy-tailed distribution, citations are fundamentally difficult to predict but can be improved. This study was aimed at investigating the factors and parts influencing the citation number of a scientific paper in the otology field. Therefore, this work proposes a new solution that utilizes machine learning and natural language processing to process English text and provides a paper citation as the predicted results. Different algorithms are implemented in this solution, such as linear regression, boosted decision tree, decision forest, and neural networks. The application of neural network regression revealed that papers' abstracts have more influence on the citation numbers of otological articles. This new solution has been developed in visual programming using Microsoft Azure machine learning at the back end and Programming Without Coding Technology at the front end. In view of the problems of data sparsity and the diversity in academic paper recom-mender systems,based on CONVNCF, this paper proposed an algorithm of convolution with word and heterogeneous information network for academic paper recommendation ( WN -APR) . Firstly, WN -APR algorithm learned user and paper' s diverse features from different semantics to alleviate the sparsity problem. Then it designed an outer product fusing way to seamlessly combine user features with paper features. Replacing of 2D CNN, this algorithm applied 3 D convolution to mine the influence of different features on the performance. Finally, it modified the BPR loss function to enhance diversity in recommendations. Experimental results on CiteULike-a and CiteULike-t datasets show that WN-APR improves the performance of accuracy and diversity over the baseline models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Image registration technology has become an important medical image preprocessing step with the wide application of computer-aided diagnosis technology in various medical image analysis tasks., Purpose: We propose a multiscale feature fusion registration based on deep learning to achieve the accurate registration and fusion of head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and solve the problem that general registration methods cannot handle the complex spatial information and position information of head MRI., Methods: Our proposed multiscale feature fusion registration network consists of three sequentially trained modules. The first is an affine registration module that implements affine transformation; the second is to realize non-rigid transformation, a deformable registration module composed of top-down and bottom-up feature fusion subnetworks in parallel; and the third is a deformable registration module that also realizes non-rigid transformation and is composed of two feature fusion subnetworks in series. The network decomposes the deformation field of large displacement into multiple deformation fields of small displacement by multiscale registration and registration, which reduces the difficulty of registration. Moreover, multiscale information in head MRI is learned in a targeted manner, which improves the registration accuracy, by connecting the two feature fusion subnetworks., Results: We used 29 3D head MRIs for training and seven volumes for testing and calculated the values of the registration evaluation metrics for the new algorithm to register anterior and posterior lateral pterygoid muscles. The Dice similarity coefficient was 0.745 ± 0.021, the Hausdorff distance was 3.441 ± 0.935 mm, the Average surface distance was 0.738 ± 0.098 mm, and the Standard deviation of the Jacobian matrix was 0.425 ± 0.043. Background: Recent developments in alpha and beta emitting radionuclide therapy highlight the importance of developing efficient methods for patient-specific dosimetry. Traditional tabulated methods such as Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) estimate the dose at the organ level while more recent numerical methods based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are able to calculate dose at the voxel level. A precalculated MC (PMC) approach was developed in this work as an alternative to time-consuming fully simulated MC. Once the spatial distribution of alpha and beta emitters is determined using imaging and/or numerical methods, the PMC code can be used to achieve an accurate voxelized 3D distribution of the deposited energy without relying on full MC calculations., Purpose: To implement the PMC method to calculate energy deposited by alpha and beta particles emitted from the Ra-224 decay chain., Methods: The GEANT4 (version 10.7) MC toolkit was used to generate databases of precalculated tracks to be integrated in the PMC code as well as to benchmark its output. In this regard, energy spectra of alpha and beta particles emitted by the Ra-224 decay chain were generated using GAMOS (version 6.2.0) and imported into GEANT4 macro files. Either alpha or beta emitting sources were defined at the center of a homogeneous phantom filled with various materials such as soft tissue, bone, and lung where particles were emitted either mono-directionally (for database generation) or isotropically (for benchmarking). Two heterogeneous phantoms were used to demonstrate PMC code compatibility with boundary crossing events. Each precalculated database was generated step-by-step by storing particle track information from GEANT4 simulations followed by its integration in a PMC code developed in MATLAB. For a user-defined number of histories, one of the tracks in a given database was selected randomly and rotated randomly to reflect an isotropic emission. Afterward, deposited energy was divided between voxels based on step length in each voxel using a ray-tracing approach. The radial distribution of deposited energy was benchmarked against fully simulated MC calculations using GEANT4. The effect of the GEANT4 parameter StepMax on the accuracy and speed of the code was also investigated., Results: In the case of alpha decay, primary alpha particles show the highest contribution (>99%) in deposited energy compared to their secondary particles. In most cases, protons act as the main secondary particles in the deposition of energy. However, for a lung phantom, using a range cutoff parameter of 10 µm on primary alpha particles yields a higher contribution of secondary electrons than protons. Differences between deposited energy calculated by PMC and fully simulated MC are within 2% for all alpha and beta emitters in homogeneous and heterogeneous phantoms. Additionally, statistical uncertainties are less than 1% for voxels with doses higher than 5% of the maximum dose. Moreover, optimization of the parameter StepMax is necessary to achieve the best tradeoff between code accuracy and speed., Conclusions: The PMC code shows good performance for dose calculations deposited by alpha and beta emitters. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been increasingly used to overcome the challenges in drug discovery. Although traditional AI techniques generally have high accuracy rates, there may be difficulties in explaining the decision process and patterns. This can create difficulties in understanding and making sense of the outputs of algorithms used in drug discovery. Therefore, using explainable AI (XAI) techniques, the causes and consequences of the decision process are better understood. This can help further improve the drug discovery process and make the right decisions. To address this issue, Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) emerged as a process and method that securely captures the results and outputs of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms. Using techniques such as SHAP (SHApley Additive ExPlanations) and LIME (Locally Interpretable Model-Independent Explanations) has made the drug targeting phase clearer and more understandable. XAI methods are expected to reduce time and cost in future computational drug discovery studies. This review provides a comprehensive overview of XAI-based drug discovery and development prediction. The so-coined fourth paradigm in science has reached the sensing area, with the use of machine learning (ML) toward data-driven improvements in sensitivity, reproducibility, and accuracy, along with the determination of multiple targets from a single measurement using multi-output regression models. Particularly, the use of supervised ML models trained on large data sets produced by electrical and electrochemical bio/sensors has emerged as an impacting trend in the literature by allowing accurate analyses even in the presence of usual issues such as electrode fouling, poor signal-to-noise ratio, chemical interferences, and matrix effects. In this trend article, apart from an outlook for the coming years, we present examples from the literature that demonstrate how helpful ML algorithms can be for dispensing the adoption of experimental methods to address the aforesaid interfering issues, ultimately contributing to translate testing technologies into on-site, practical, and daily applications., (© 2023. Objective: To describe the development of a platform for image collection and annotation that resulted in a multi-sourced international image dataset of oral lesions to facilitate the development of automated lesion classification algorithms., Materials and Methods: We developed a web-interface, hosted on a web server to collect oral lesions images from international partners. Further, we developed a customised annotation tool, also a web-interface for systematic annotation of images to build a rich clinically labelled dataset. We evaluated the sensitivities comparing referral decisions through the annotation process with the clinical diagnosis of the lesions., Results: The image repository hosts 2474 images of oral lesions consisting of oral cancer, oral potentially malignant disorders and other oral lesions that were collected through MeMoSA ® UPLOAD. Eight-hundred images were annotated by seven oral medicine specialists on MeMoSA ® ANNOTATE, to mark the lesion and to collect clinical labels. The sensitivity in referral decision for all lesions that required a referral for cancer management/surveillance was moderate to high depending on the type of lesion (64.3%-100%)., Conclusion: This is the first description of a database with clinically labelled oral lesions. Expert finding is crucial for a wealth of applications in both academia and industry. Given a user query and trove of academic papers, expert finding aims at retrieving the most relevant experts for the query, from the academic papers. Existing studies focus on embedding-based solutions that consider academic papers’ textual semantic similarities to a query via document representation and extract the top-n experts from the most similar papers. Beyond implicit textual semantics, however, papers’ explicit relationships (e.g., co-authorship) in a heterogeneous graph (e.g., DBLP) are critical for expert finding, because they help improve the representation quality. Despite their importance, the explicit relationships of papers generally have been ignored in the literature. In this article, we study expert finding on heterogeneous graphs by considering both the explicit relationships and implicit textual semantics of papers in one model. Specifically, we define the cohesive (k, P)-core community of papers w.r.t. a meta-path P (i.e., relationship) and propose a (k, P)-core based document embedding model to enhance the representation quality. Based on this, we design a proximity graph-based index (PGIndex) of papers and present a threshold algorithm (TA)-based method to efficiently extract top-n experts from papers returned by PG-Index. We further optimize our approach in two ways: (1) we boost effectiveness by considering the (k, P)-core community of experts and the diversity of experts’ research interests, to achieve high-quality expert representation from paper representation; and (2) we streamline expert finding, going from “extract top-n experts from top-m (m > n) semantically similar papers” to “directly return top-n experts”. The process of returning a large number of top-m papers as intermediate data is avoided, thereby improving the efficiency. Purpose: To develop and evaluate a phase unwrapping method for cine phase contrast MRI based on graph cuts., Methods: A proposed Iterative Graph Cuts method was evaluated in 10 cardiac patients with two-dimensional flow quantification which was repeated at low venc settings to provoke wrapping. The images were also unwrapped by a path-following method (ROMEO), and a Laplacian-based method (LP). Net flow was quantified using semi-automatic vessel segmentation. High venc images were also wrapped retrospectively to asses the residual amount of wrapped voxels., Results: The absolute net flow error after unwrapping at venc = 100 cm/s was 1.8 mL, which was 0.83 mL smaller than for LP. The repeatability error at high venc without unwrapping was 2.5 mL. The error at venc = 50 cm/s was 7.5 mL, which was 8.2 mL smaller than for ROMEO and 5.7 mL smaller than for LP. For retrospectively wrapped images with synthetic venc of 100/50/25 cm/s, the residual amount of wrapped voxels was 0.00/0.12/0.79%, which was 0.09/0.26/8.0 percentage points smaller than for LP. With synthetic venc of 25 cm/s, omitting magnitude information resulted in 3.2 percentage points more wrapped voxels, and only spatial/temporal unwrapping resulted in 4.6/21 percentage points more wrapped voxels compared to spatiotemporal unwrapping., Conclusion: Iterative Graph Cuts enables unwrapping of cine phase contrast MRI with very small errors, except for at extreme blood velocities, with equal or better performance compared to ROMEO and LP.
