Container industry is gathering pace as vessels are becoming increasingly larger, with the volume of containers carried regularly exceeding 23,000 per vessel. This means the scope for accidents and incidents is also increasing exponentially. This title aims to provide those professionals involved in the packing and handling of cargoes inside containers with the necessary knowledge to do so safely. This book focuses on Coastal and Ocean Navigation with an emphasis on celestial navigation techniques as a ‘back up'in the event digital technologies fail.It deals with the main themes and principles of celestial navigation (including time). It covers the syllabus for deck officers working towards the Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate of competence (COC) awarded by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), and for Royal Navy navigation officers working towards achieving the equivalent Navigational Watch Certificate (NWC). The NWC is equivalent to the certificate awarded by the MCA to OOWs in the Merchant Service under the international Standardisation of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) agreements. The detailed theory of celestial navigation is provided.

This book provides guidance and insight into the development process for safety indicators to comply with general classification rule requirements. The utilisation of this guidance will provide tangible benefits as the marine and offshore industry is able to realise the positive results of tangible safety indicators that are developed correctly and managed appropriately throughout the lifecycle of the vessel or platform. In the marine and offshore industry, design and equipment configurations vary from one system to the next, and systems are in many cases increasingly complex. There are gaps in codes and standards which may lag technological innovations and there are issues related to interfaces between systems. Safety indictors such as risk analyses, FMEA, job safety analyses, management of change procedures, HSQE, technical manuals and reliability-based maintenance provide a formalised approach to identify hazardous situations, address the gaps and interconnection variances, and improve safety, environmental performance and operational downtime. The majority of Classification Societies (‘Class') require their clients to develop and submit safety indicators as part of the classification requirements for certain systems and to obtain certain special notations.

This book highlights the relationship between independent and dependent ship repairing variables of various combinations under linear and nonlinear form using actual data collected from shipyards. Independent variables refer to age, deadweight, cubic number, principal dimensions, and type of ships. Dependent variables refer to repairing time, docking time, repairing labor, docking labor, hull blasting renewal area, hull painting renewal area, pipe renewal length, structural steel renewal weight, and structural steel renewal locations. Mathematical models are developed involving appropriate variables using multiple linear regression analysis technique for different combinations of variables of ship repair. Adequacy of models is tested using statistical parameters like coefficients of multiple determination and F statistic (calculated and tabulated). Also, validation is presented to determine the deviation of model value from the observed value and their statistical parameters to justifythe adequacy of the respective estimate models. The book also emphasises the importance of managing the labor force, reliable data collection and an effective management information system to manage this as well as keeping control of on-going repair contracts.
