There has always been a romance around ocean liners, but this book looks behind the romance to show the reality of travelling the oceans of the world. The book starts with the first scheduled transatlantic crossings in the age of sail, then moves on through the development of the steamers and ends in the present day, when ocean liners have given way to airliners. All aspects of the subject are discussed. The experience of travelling by sea varied enormously from the luxury of first-class travel to the often brutal conditions endured by immigrants. Ship design developed in the race between competing companies to provide the most powerful ships. But while technology came into the fundamental design, when it came to décor, for many of the great liners the interiors looked back with a romanticised view of the past. It is not always realised that a great liner might have almost as many crew as passengers, and this looks at all those who kept the ships running, from the black gang in the engine room to the captain on the bridge. The result is a rounded view of what it meant to travel on some of the greatest ships ever built.

This book covers MASS regulation, technology, and policy. MASS development began with the realization of the 4th industrial revolution technologies such as big data, AI, IoT, and communication, which were also linked to technological development in the maritime field. However, it is still unclear how MASS will operate. This book is divided into three parts: MASS regulation, technology, and policy, and explains each part in detail. Part I “MASS regulation and safety” deals with IMO works for MASS, including IMO MASS RSE results which has been finished in 2021. In addition, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), one of the most important international conventions to be considered for MASS operation, will be dealt with and various safety considerations will be explained in detail. Through this, this book explains in detail the regulatory considerations and safety considerations for MASS. In particular, the gaps and themes identified in IMO MASS RSE and the priority discussion needs are explained, and based on this, the development of a goal-based non-mandatory MASS code currently in progress is discussed. UNCLOS is a convention like the blueprint of the IMO Conventions, and it is very important to understand and meet the requirements of UNCLOS for the operation of MASS. Therefore, this book provides a detailed explanation of the application of UNCLOS. In particular, UNCLOS Article 94 would be a very important consideration. Also, this book covers COLREGs and technologies for MASS operations.

This book provides an outline of the Ship-to-Ship transfer process, and how ship's masters and officers can conduct this inherently dangerous activity safely. It is non-technical in detail making it an ideal resource for first-year students completing their studies in nautical science, or as a refresher resource for professionals already employed in the tanker sector. Moreover, this book would serve as a good handrail for shore-based personnel involved in planning and executing ship-to-ship transfers. It would be used a mid-range textbook for apprentices, officer cadets posted to crude/gas carriers. Technical rules like the IGF code are developed by large groups of experts over long periods of time. Explaining the background for the requirements of such rules is not part of the development process. As a result, the reasoning behind the rules is often lost over time, or at least hidden from the end user of the rules. The purpose of this publication is to explain the safety principles behind the rules for unconventional marine fuels. It is the author's hope that an understanding of the safety principles will contribute to the technology-based interpretation of the rules and their further development.

The book is intended to be about the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC 2006), about seafarers'security measures available before MLC 2006 and after its adoption. The following security measures will be addressed in the book: mandatory financial security established by the MLC 2006, flag State responsibility, labour supplying responsibility, port State control, and a ship arrest. The responsibility of the shipowner in respect of the seafarers engaged in work on his ship will be discussed in analysis of nowadays seafarers'recruitment process and a legal structure of shipping companies. Content will include the analysis of international (UNCLOS, ILO and IMO conventions, UNCCRO's, and Vienna Convention on Consular Relations 1963) and national law (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Norway, The Philippines, and The UK), and relevant legal documents - agreements, guidelines, and court cases. Under the MLC 2006 the shipowner has an obligation to ensure appropriate working conditions on board a ship, due payment of wages, repatriation of seafarers and to fulfil other obligations in accordance with international and national law and the seafarer's employment agreement. Even nowadays, there are still shipowners who do not take care of the people who work on their ships: the crew onboard is left without food and drinking water, has not been paid for their work and cannot go back home because the shipowner does not pay for their repatriation. Current COVID-19 pandemic turned out to be a serious challenge to the MLC 2006 operation in practice. The MLC issues and seafarers'employment and social rights continue to be on the agenda of shipping industry. It is expected that on 24 December 2024 the amendments of 2022 to the Code of the MLC 2006 will come into force. The Guidelines for port State and flag State authorities on how to deal with seafarer abandonment cases were adopted on First Meeting of the Joint ILO–IMO Tripartite Working Group to identify and address seafarers'issues and the human element, held on 13–15 December 2022. The book aims to promote uniformity in implementation of the MLC 2006 by this increasing effectiveness of the MLC 2006. Book will bring a new knowledge in the area of maritime labour law. Accordingly, the author hopes that the book will be an important contribution for promoting understanding of seafarers'rights and shipowners'responsibilities under the MLC. The application of the guidance in this book is optional. When a vessel is designed, equipped, built and surveyed in accordance with the relevant class rules, and when found satisfactory during class notation survey, a classification notation may be granted which demonstrates the vessel's compliance with the appropriate class requirements for vessels operating in low-temperature environments. Those vessels that are designed to meet the requirements of an ice class are typically required to meet specific class rules around “strengthening for navigation in ice” or other equivalent and recognized ice class rules. Working and living onboard vessels imposes a series of generally low-frequency mechanical vibrations as well as single-impulse shock loads on the human body. Also, exposure to noise is characteristic aboard vessels. Low-frequency vibrations are created by vessel motions, which are produced by the various sea states in conjunction with vessel speed and point of sail. These motions can result in motion sickness, body instability, interruptions of task performance, sleep interruption and fatigue, increased health risk aggravated by shock loads due to slam and reduced human efficiency. Higher-frequency vibration influences comfort and is often associated with rotating machinery. The imposition of higher frequency vibrations (about 1 to 80 Hz) induces corresponding motions and forces within the human body creating discomfort and reduced human efficiency. With regard to noise, the above can similarly affect exposed humans, notably with sleep interruption and resulting fatigue, discomfort, and reduced efficiency. Also of concern are transient and permanent hearing loss, masking of audible signals, and interruption of speech communication.
