Electromagnetic imaging has been a powerful technique in various civil and military applications across medical imaging, geophysics, and space exploration. The Nyquist-Shannon theory has formed the basis for processing the signals in such systems. The advent of Compressive Sensing techniques has enabled low-dimension-model-based techniques to be used to break many of the bottlenecks of the earlier technologies. Low-dimensional-model-based electromagnetic imaging remains at its early stage, and many important issues relevant to practical applications need to be carefully investigated. In particular, this is the era of big data with booming electromagnetic sensing, by which massive data are being collected for retrieving very detailed information of probed objects. This monograph gives an overview of the low-dimensional models of structure signals, along with its relevant theories and low-complexity algorithms of signal recovery. It further reviews the recent advancements of low-dimensional-model-based electromagnetic imaging in various applied areas. This book is concerned with remote sensing based on the technology of imaging radar. It assumes no prior knowledge of radar on the part of the reader, commencing with a treatment of the essential concepts of microwave imaging and progressing through to the development of multipolarisation and interferometric radar, modes which underpin contemporary applications of the technology. The use of radar for imaging the earth's surface and its resources is not recent. Aircraft-based microwave systems were operating in the 1960s, ahead of optical systems that image in the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum. Optical remote sensing was given a strong impetus with the launch of the first of the Landsat series of satellites in the mid 1970s. Although the Seasat satellite launched in the same era (1978) carried an imaging radar, it operated only for about 12 months and there were not nearly so many microwave systems as optical platforms in service during the 1980s. As a result, the remote sensing community globally tended to develop strongly around optical imaging until Shuttle missions in the early to mid 1980s and free-flying imaging radar satellites in the early to mid 1990s became available, along with several sophisticated aircraft platforms. Since then, and particularly with the unique capabilities and flexibility of imaging radar, there has been an enormous surge of interest in microwave imaging technology. Unlike optical imaging, understanding the theoretical underpinnings of imaging radar can be challenging, particularly when new to the field.

Imaging for Forensics and Security: From Theory to Practice provides a detailed analysis of new imaging and pattern recognition techniques for the understanding and deployment of biometrics and forensic techniques as practical solutions to increase security. Advances in optical technology and computing power are bringing life-like 3DTV closer, with potential applications not only in entertainment, but also in education, scientific research, industry, medicine, and many other areas. 3DTV will require the integration of a diversity of key technologies from computing to graphics, imaging to display, and signal processing to communications. Creating high-fidelity images of our world has been a continuous challenge, even as our understanding and skills have evolved. The acquisition and mapping of the rich and complex content of visual information rank high among the most demanding technical tasks. Now electronic image sensors can record a dynamic range from bright to dark of more than seven orders of magnitude, thus exceeding the ability of a human eye by more than a hundred times and displaying five orders of magnitude in brightness, resulting in CRT and LCD displays with more than 100-fold improvement. This first comprehensive account of high-dynamic-range (HDR) vision focusses on HDR real-time, high-speed digital video recording and also systematically presents HDR video transmission and display. The power of the eye-like, logarithmic optoelectronic conversion concept is demonstrated in machine-vision, medical, automotive, surveillance and cinematic applications, and it is extended to HDR sub-retinal implants for the vision impaired. While the book conveys the overall picture of HDR vision, specific knowledge of microelectronics and image processing is not required.
