- Abstract
The purpose of this book is to provide tools for a better understanding of the fundamental tradeo?s and interdependencies in wireless networks, with the goal of designing resource allocation strategies that exploit these int- dependencies to achieve signi?cant performance gains. Two facts prompted us to write it: First, future wireless applications will require a fundamental understanding of the design principles and control mechanisms in wireless networks. Second, the complexity of the network problems simply precludes the use of engineering common sense alone to identify good solutions, and so mathematics becomes the key avenue to cope with central technical problems in the design of wireless networks. In this book, two?elds of mathematics play a central role: Perron-Frobenius theory for non-negative matrices and optimization theory. This book is a revised and expanded version of the research monograph “Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks” that was published as Lecture Notes in Computer Sciences (LNCS 4000) in 2006. Although the general structure has remained unchanged to a large extent, the book contains - merous additional results and more detailed discussion. For instance, there is a more extensive treatment of general nonnegative matrices and interf- ence functions that are described by an axiomatic model. Additional material on max-min fairness, proportional fairness, utility-based power control with QoS (quality of service) support and stochastic power control has been added.

- Abstract
This book deals with the problem of joint source-channel video transmission, i.e., the joint optimal allocation of resources at the application layer and the other network layers, such as data rate adaptation, channel coding, power adaptation in wireless networks, quality of service (QoS) support from the network, and packet scheduling, for efficient video transmission. Real-time video communication applications, such as videoconferencing, video telephony, and on-demand video streaming, have gained increased popularity. However, a key problem in video transmission over the existing Internet and wireless networks is the incompatibility between the nature of the network conditions and the QoS requirements (in terms, for example, of bandwidth, delay, and packet loss) of real-time video applications. To deal with this incompatibility, a natural approach is to adapt the end-system to the network. The joint source-channel coding approach aims to efficiently perform content-aware cross-layerresource allocation, thus increasing the communication efficiency of multiple network layers. Our purpose in this book is to review the basic elements of the state-of-the-art approaches toward joint source-channel video transmission for wired and wireless systems. In this book, we present a general resource-distortion optimization framework, which is used throughout the book to guide our discussions on various techniques of joint source-channel video transmission. In this framework, network resources from multiple layers are assigned to each video packet according to its level of importance. It provides not only an optimization benchmark against which the performance of other sub-optimal systems can be evaluated, but also a useful tool for assessing the effectiveness of different error control components in practical system design. This book is therefore written to be accessible to researchers, expert industrial R&D engineers, and university students who are interested in the cutting edge technologies in joint source-channel video transmission. - Abstract
Continuous-Time Systems is a description of linear, nonlinear, time-invariant, and time-varying electronic continuous-time systems. As an assemblage of physical or mathematical components organized and interacting to convert an input signal (also called excitation signal or driving force) to an output signal (also called response signal), an electronic system can be described using different methods offered by the modern systems theory. To make possible for readers to understand systems, the book systematically covers major foundations of the systems theory. First, the quantitative and qualitative methods of systems description are presented along with the stability analysis. The representation of linear time-invariant systems in the time domain is provided using the convolution, ordinarily differential equations (ODEs), and state space. In the frequency domain, these systems are analyzed using the Fourier and Laplace transforms. The linear time-varying systems are represented using the general convolution, ODEs, and state space. The nonlinear time-invariant systems are described employing the Taylor and Volterra series expansions, ODEs, state space, and approximate methods such as averaging, equivalent linearization, and describing function. Finally, the representation of nonlinear time-varying systems is given using the Taylor and Volterra series, ODEs, modulation functions method, and state space modelling. Review of matrix theory and other useful generalizations are postponed to Appendices.

- Abstract
The control and reduction of multiuser interference is a fundamental problem in wireless communications. In order to increase the spectral efficiency and to provide individual quality-of-service (QoS), it is required to jointly optimize the power allocation together with possible receive and transmit strategies. This often leads to complex and difficult-to-handle problem formulations. There are many examples in the literature, where the special structure of the problem is exploited in order to solve special cases of this problem (e.g. multiuser beamforming or CDMA). So it is desirable to have a general theory, which can be applied to many practical QoS measures, like rates, delay, BER, etc. These measures can all be related to the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) or the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). This leads to the problem of SIR and SINR balancing, which is fundamental for many problems in communication theory. In this text we derive a comprehensive theoretical framework for SIR balancing, with and without noise. The theory considers the possible use of receive strategies (e.g. interference filtering or channel assignment), which can be included in the model in an abstract way. Power allocation and receiver design are mutually interdependent, thus joint optimization strategies are derived. The main purpose of this text is to provide a better understanding of interference balancing and the characterization of the QoS feasible region. We also provide a generic algorithmic framework, which may serve as a basis for the development of new resource allocation algorithms.
