- Abstract

- Abstract
In the automotive sector, digitalisation, connectivity and automation are rapidly expanding. In tomorrow's vehicles, human beings will merely be passengers – which raises a host of complex legal issues regarding accidents involving self-driving vehicles. This book is the first to offer a comprehensive, global overview of civil liability regimes for all levels of vehicle automation in jurisdictions that represent some of the most important markets for the automotive industry. After a technical introduction to how self-driving cars work, the individual chapters analyse the liability for driving automation at SAE J3016 levels 0 through 5 from a country-specific perspective. All chapters were written by experts in the field and follow a uniform legal structure. Hence, the book offers an essential comparative analysis of similarities and differences in the jurisdictions examined, while also providing suggestions for future legislative changes at the national and international level. The book is not only relevant for legal scholars and practitioners but will also be of particular interest to anyone involved in the design, manufacture, distribution and operation of self-driving vehicles.

- Abstract
This volume investigates the challenges and opportunities for designing, manufacturing and operating off-Earth infrastructures in order to establish adaptive human habitats. The adaptive aspects are considered with respect to the development of adequate infrastructures designed to support human activities. Given the limitations in bringing materials from Earth, utilisation of in-situ resources is crucial for establishing and maintaining these infrastructures.Adaptive on-and off-Earth Environments focuses, among other aspects, on the design, production, and operation processes required to build and maintain such off-Earth infrastructures, while heavily relying on In-Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU). Such design, production, and operation processes integrate cyber-physical approaches developed and tested on Earth. The challenge is to adapt on-Earth approaches to off-Earth applications aiming at technology advancement and ultimately transfer from on- to off-Earth research. Thischallenge is addressed with contributions from various disciplines ranging from power generation to architecture, construction, and materials engineering involving ISRU for manufacturing processes. All chapters, related to these disciplines, are structured with an emphasis on computing and adaptivity of on-Earth technology to off-Earth applications and vice versa to serve society at large.

- Abstract
Social robots have significantly advanced in capabilities and availability, gradually becoming part of everyday life. Their new interactive features are relevant to the struggling care sector. As Western societies age, the demand for care services rises, yet the workforce does not grow at the same rate. This book explores the potential of social robots to support the workforce and enhance the well-being of residents in care homes. Using a socio-informatics approach, this research investigates how residents and caregivers interact with social robots, examines and facilitates their appropriation, and provides insights into the development of the robots'software and hardware. The research and development were carried out collaboratively in care homes with the people who work and live there. The findings indicate that social robots can be beneficial in care homes. They broaden the options for social care workers and, when integrated into daily routines, can provide brief respite periods. Additionally, they positively impact residents by engaging them in cognitive and physical activities. However, the robots can only assist, and not replace, care workers.

- Abstract
The declared goal of this book, an extended and revised translation of the German edition (2021), is to show how a unified model of the psyche and body can be developed via insights from psychoanalysis, neurology and computer technology. On the one hand, such a model allows for the testing of psychological and social theories on a scientific basis with the help of simulation experiments. On the other hand, the model developed according to the functional structures of the human brain and psyche provides the basis for artificial intelligence systems. These are systems with cognitive capabilities that can save human lives, save energy, ensure safety at airports, provide support in old-age care and in the medical field; in other words and generally speaking, systems that can simplify our lives in a relevant way and on a broad basis. A great deal of time and money is invested in genetic engineering and neurology, but research into the mental apparatus in the context of the neurological part, i.e., modeling the brain in a holistic way, is sparse in every respect. However, the results of the scientific project SiMA, of which the first author has been a driving force, show that the research of this organ, which in the authors'understanding includes the mental apparatus, as a whole, is quite feasible today. This is also the main message of the book, which addresses topics such as artificial intelligence, the brain, psychoanalysis, behavioral models, complexity, bionics of the mental, emotions and feelings, consciousness and awareness, preconscious and unconscious, the functional (and not only behavioral) description and modeling of the brain and especially of the mental apparatus, and some more. In the world of technology, there is generally little interest in psychoanalysis, whereas in the world of psychoanalysis, people usually refuse to deal with mathematics and technology, especially computer technology. Is there an information theory of the brain on the one hand, and of computer technology on the other hand? The authors attempt to answer this question from both sides. With the goal to reach as many readers as possible and to provoke, the authors break with traditions and give space to new forms of thinking and argue that it is crucial to take a new path in automation, in artificial intelligence and in (technical) cognitive science, but also in psychoanalysis and neurology, in order to create a common basis for scientific and technical possibilities that have been previously inaccessible.

- Abstract
This book aims to address a wide range of topics in wireless/satellite communications to tackle the issues related to the integration of terrestrial networks (TN) with non-terrestrial networks (NTN). In Release 17, the third-generation partnership project (3GPP) proposed the standardization of NTN to allow 5G-based TN to support NTN. According to Release 17, the NTN will consist of satellites, with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and high-altitude platforms (HAPs) regarded as specific use cases of NTN. Similar to the Global Positioning System (GPS), signals based on NTN are unable to provide indoor coverage, as these signals are attenuated and scattered by roofs, walls, etc. Moreover, power and delay are critical factors that restrict a cellular-enabled mobile handset from achieving reliability, seamless coverage, and low latency while relying on NTN. This book has brought together multidisciplinary contributors in the field of wireless/satellite communications to identify and present technical challenges and recent results related to the design of energy-efficient, delay-tolerant, and enhanced coverage-based integrated TN and NTN. Given that challenges and future aspects are also considered, the book covers a wide variety of subject categories and would therefore benefit a larger readership in the scientific community.

- Abstract
This book introduces methods for bin picking in manufacturing. These methods can be used to develop unified, dexterous, and robust bin picking systems for entangled objects. The target objects include both rigid and deformable objects. Robotic bin picking is a valuable task in manufacturing, aiming to automate the assembly process by utilizing robots to pick necessary objects from disorganized bins. Previous studies have addressed various challenges related to bin picking. However, when objects with complex shapes or deformable properties are randomly placed in a bin, they tend to get entangled, making it difficult for the robot to pick up individual items. This poses challenges in perception, as the robot must be capable of distinguishing between isolated objects and potentially tangled ones in a cluttered environment. This book is of interest to students, researchers, and professionals in manufacturing industries.
