- Abstract
This book presents a step-by-step discussion of the design and development of radio frequency identification (RFID) and RFID-enabled sensors on flexible low cost substrates for UHF frequency bands. Various examples of fully function building blocks (design and fabrication of antennas, integration with ICs and microcontrollers, power sources, as well as inkjet-printing techniques) demonstrate the revolutionary effect of this approach in low cost RFID and RFID-enabled sensors fields. This approach could be easily extended to other microwave and wireless applications as well. The first chapter describes the basic functionality and the physical and IT-related principles underlying RFID and sensors technology. Chapter two explains in detail inkjet-printing technology providing the characterization of the conductive ink, which consists of nano-silver-particles, while highlighting the importance of this technology as a fast and simple fabrication technique especially on flexible organic substrates such as Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) or paper-based substrates. Chapter three demonstrates several compact inkjet-printed UHF RFID antennas using antenna matching techniques to match IC's complex impedance as prototypes to provide the proof of concept of this technology. Chapter four discusses the benefits of using conformal magnetic material as a substrate for miniaturized high-frequency circuit applications. In addition, in Chapter five, the authors also touch up the state-of-the-art area of fully-integrated wireless sensor modules on organic substrates and show the first ever 2D sensor integration with an RFID tag module on paper, as well as the possibility of 3D multilayer paper-based RF/microwave structures. - Abstract
This book explains physics under the operating principles of semiconductor lasers in detail based on the experience of the author, dealing with the first manufacturing of phase-shifted DFB-LDs and recent research on transverse modes. The book also bridges a wide gap between journal papers and textbooks, requiring only an undergraduate-level knowledge of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics, and helps readers to understand journal papers where definitions of some technical terms vary, depending on the paper. Two definitions of the photon density in the rate equations and two definitions of the phase-shift in the phase-shifted DFB-LD are explained, and differences in the calculated results are indicated, depending on the definitions.Readers can understand the physics of semiconductor lasers and analytical tools for Fabry-Perot LDs, DFB-LDs, and VCSELs and will be stimulated to develop semiconductor lasers themselves.

- Abstract
Fundamentals of Optical Fiber Sensor Technology The field of optical fiber sensors continues to expand and develop, being increasingly influenced by new applications of the technologies that have been the topics of research for some years. In this way, the subject continues to mature and reach into new areas of engineering. This text in the series on Optical Fiber Sensor Technology provides a foundation for a better understanding of those developments in the basic science and its applications in fiber sensors, underpinning the subject today. This book builds upon the work in an earlier single volume which covered a broad area of the subject, but which now, in this, volume 1 of the series, focuses upon the fundamentals and essentials of the technology. Material which is included has been carefully reviewed and in most cases thoroughly revised and expanded to reflect the current state of the subject, and provide an essential background for the more applications-oriented content of the subsequent volumes of the series. This volume opens with a status paper on optical fiber sensor technology, by Kenneth Grattan and Tong Sun providing in it a flavor of the main topics in the field and giving an essential overview at the sort of systems which are discussed in more detail in the other chapters in the whole series. An extensive publication list of readily accessible papers reflecting these topics is included.

- Abstract
This book is the result of more than ten years of research and teaching in the field of quantum electronics. The purpose of the book is to introduce the principles of lasers, starting from elementary notions of quantum mechanics and electromagnetism. Because it is an introductory book, an effort has been made to make it self contained to minimize the need for reference to other works. For the same reason; the references have been limited (whenever possible) either to review papers or to papers of seminal importance. The organization of the book is based on the fact that a laser can be thought of as consisting of three elements: (i) an active material, (ii) a pumping system, and (iii) a suitable resonator. Ac cordingly, after an introductory chapter, the next three chapters deal, respectively, with the interaction of radiation with matter, pumping processes, and the theory of passive optical resonators.

- Abstract
This volume contains the proceedings of the first ICASE/LaRC Work shop on Computational Electromagnetics and Its Applications conducted by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering and NASA Langley Research Center. We had several goals in mind when we decided, jointly with the Elec tromagnetics Research Branch, to organize this workshop on Computa tional Electromagnetics ( CEM). Among our goals were a desire to obtain an overview of the current state of CEM, covering both algorithms and ap plications and their effect on NASA's activities in this area. In addition, we wanted to provide an attractive setting for computational scientists with expertise in other fields, especially computational fluid dynamics (CFD), to observe the algorithms and tools of CEM at work. Our expectation was that scientists from both fields would discover mutually beneficial inter connections and relationships. Another goal was to learn of progress in solution algorithms for electromagnetic optimization and design problems; such problems make extensive use of field solvers and computational effi ciency is at a premium. To achieve these goals we assembled the renowned group of speakers from academia and industry whose talks are contained in this volume. The papers are printed in the same order in which the talks were pre sented at the meeting. The first paper is an overview of work currently being performed in the Electromagnetic Research Branch at the Langley Research Center.

- Abstract
This new Fifth Edition of Principles of Lasers incorporates corrections to the previous edition. The text's essential mission remains the same: to provide a wide-ranging yet unified description of laser behavior, physics, technology, and current applications. Dr. Svelto emphasizes the physical rather than the mathematical aspects of lasers, and presents the subject in the simplest terms compatible with a correct physical understanding. Praise for earlier editions:'Professor Svelto is himself a longtime laser pioneer and his text shows the breadth of his broad acquaintance with all aspects of the field … Anyone mastering the contents of this book will be well prepared to understand advanced treatises and research papers in laser science and technology.'(Arthur L. Schawlow, 1981 Nobel Laureate in Physics)'Already well established as a self-contained introduction to the physics and technology of lasers … Professor Svelto's book, in this lucid translation by David Hanna, can be strongly recommended for self-study or teaching at the final-year undergraduate or first-year post-graduate levels.'(Physics Bulletin)'A thorough understanding of this book in conjunction with one of the existing volumes on laser safety will go a long way in providing the health physicist with the understanding he needs … Highly recommended.'(Health Physics)'Introduces laser science and technology with the accessibility appropriate for the nonspecialist and the enthusiasm of the pioneer.'(Laser Focus)'A very good introduction to laser theory and practice … aimed at upper-level undergraduate students. It is logically organized and easy to read … Most of the basic mathematical framework needed to understand this evolving field is presented. Every chapter contains a good set of problems, answers to some of which are given in the back.'(Sci-TechNews) Orazio Svelto is Professor of Quantum Electronics at the Polytechnic Institute of Milan and Director of the Quantum Electronics Center of the Italian National Research Council. His research has covered a wide range of activity in the field of laser physics and quantum electronics, starting from the very beginning of these disciplines. This activity includes ultrashort-pulse generation and applications, development of laser resonators and mode-selection techniques, laser applications in biology and medicine, and development of solid-state lasers. Professor Svelto is the author of more than 150 scientific papers and his researches have been the subject of more than 50 invited papers and international conferences. He has served as a program chair of the IX International Quantum Electronics Conference (1976), as a chair of the European program committee for CLEO'85 and CLEO'90, and he was general co-chair for the first CLEO-Europe Conference (1994). He is an elected member of the Italian'Accademia dei XL'and a Fellow of the IEEE.

- Abstract
These proceedings continue the series edited in the framework of the traditional triennial International Conference on El- trical Bio-Impedance (ICEBI), the most important platform for presenting recent scientific achievements in the area of el- th nd trical bio-impedance. The XIII ICEBI was held from Aug. 29 – Sept. 02 2007 at the Graz University of Technology in Graz, Austria. The organizers received 285 abstracts 264 of which were accepted for presentation. The authors of these - pers came from 34 different nations. Due to the kind support by the International Federation for Biomedical Engineering (IFMBE) the proceedings were p- lished by Springer in the proceedings series of the IFMBE. The editors would like to thank the IFMBE for this kind of s- vice which makes the results of the bioimpedance community visible on a very important publishing platform. According to the quality requirements of the IFMBE each paper had to pass a thorough two-stage review by two independent members of the scientific board. As a result 204 papers were selected for being printed in this issue. As already in previous years the ICEBI was held together with the Conference on Electrical Impedance Tomography, the annual meeting for biomedical impedance imaging. Consequently, the proceedings also contain many contributions from this very important and challenging branch of bioimpedance research.

This edition aims to expand on the first edition and take the reader through to the wave equation on coaxial cable and free-space by using Maxwell's equations. The new chapters include time varying signals and fundamentals of Maxwell's equations. This book will introduce and discuss electromagnetic fields in an accessible manner. The author explains electroconductive fields and develops ideas relating to signal propagation and develops Maxwell's equations and applies them to propagation in a planar optical waveguide. The first of the new chapters introduces the idea of a travelling wave by considering the variation of voltage along a coaxial line. This concept will be used in the second new chapter which solves Maxwell's equations in free-space and then applies them to a planar optical waveguide in the third new chapter. As this is an area that most students find difficult, it links back to the earlier chapters to aid understanding. This book is intended for first- and second-year electrical and electronic undergraduates and can also be used for undergraduates in mechanical engineering, computing and physics. The book includes examples and homework problems. Introduces and examines electrostatic fields in an accessible manner Explains electroconductive fields Develops ideas relating to signal propagation Examines Maxwell's equations and relates them to propagation in a planar optical waveguide Martin Sibley recently retired after 33 years of teaching at the University of Huddersfield. - Abstract
This book presents a comprehensive and coherent summary of techniques for enhancing the resolution and image contrast provided by far-field optical microscopes. It takes a critical look at the body of knowledge that comprises optical microscopy, compares and contrasts the various instruments, provides a clear discussion of the physical principles that underpin these techniques, and describes advances in science and medicine for which superresolution microscopes are required and are making major contributions. The text fills significant gaps that exist in other works on superresolution imaging, firstly by placing a new emphasis on the specimen, a critical component of the microscope setup, giving equal importance to the enhancement of both resolution and contrast. Secondly, it covers several topics not typically discussed in depth, such as Bessel and Airy beams, the physics of the spiral phase plate, vortex beams and singular optics, photoactivated localizationmicroscopy (PALM), stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), structured illumination microscopy (SIM), and light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM). Several variants of these techniques are critically discussed. Noise, optical aberrations, specimen damage, and artifacts in microscopy are also covered. The importance of validation of superresolution images with electron microscopy is stressed. Additionally, the book includes translations and discussion of seminal papers by Abbe and Helmholtz that proved to be pedagogically relevant as well as historically significant. This book is written for students, researchers, and engineers in the life sciences, medicine, biological engineering, and materials science who plan to work with or already are working with superresolution light microscopes. The volume can serve as a reference for these areas while a selected set of individual chapters can be used as a textbook for a one-semester undergraduate or first-year graduate course on superresolution microscopy. Moreover, the text provides a captivating account of curiosity, skepticism, risk-taking, innovation, and creativity in science and technology. Good scientific practice is emphasized throughout, and the author's lecture slides on responsible conduct of research are included as an online resource which will be of interest to students, course instructors, and scientists alike.

- Abstract
This book presents an unconventional approach for implementing chipless radiofrequency identification (RFID) systems and related sensors. Contrary to most state-of-the-art chipless-RFID systems, the proposed approach is based on time domain and the tags are read through near field. The book discusses different aspects of these chipless-RFID systems, including tag and reader design, strategies to enhance the data density and capacity, tag programming and erasing, tag implementation in plastic and paper substrates, and synchronous tag reading, among others. A tolerance analysis and validation of the different systems, as well as prospective applications, are also included. The book also offers a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in chipless-RFID technology, including a comparative analysis, which is extended also to chip-based RFID systems. Readers are expected to be familiar with RF/microwave engineering technology. Besides master's and postgraduate students, the book is intended for researchers in the field of radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology, and may be of interest for engineers working in the areas of wireless communications, automatic identification, security, authentication, microwave and wireless sensors, as well as those dealing with internet of things (IoT) and smart systems.

- Abstract
This book provides an overview of the latest research and development of new technologies for cognitive radio, mobile communications, and wireless networks. The contributors discuss the research and requirement analysis and initial standardization work towards 5G cellular systems and the capacity problems it presents. They show how cognitive radio, with the capability to flexibly adapt its parameters, has been proposed as the enabling technology for unlicensed secondary users to dynamically access the licensed spectrum owned by legacy primary users on a negotiated or an opportunistic basis. They go on to show how cognitive radio is now perceived in a much broader paradigm that will contribute to solve the resource allocation problem that 5G requirements raise. The chapters represent hand-selected expanded papers from EAI sponsored and hosted conferences such as the 12th EAI International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems, the 11th EAI International Conference on HeterogeneousNetworking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness, the 10th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks, the 8th International Conference on Mobile Multimedia Communications, and the EAI International Conference on Software Defined Wireless Networks and Cognitive Technologies for IoT.

This book gathers a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the Tiangong-2 Data Utilization Conference, which was held in Beijing, China, in December 2018. As the first space laboratory in China, Tiangong-2 carries 3 new types of remote sensing payloads – the Wide-band Imaging Spectrometer (WIS), Three-dimensional Imaging Microwave Altimeter (TIMA), and Multi-band Ultraviolet Edge Imaging Spectrometer (MUEIS) – for observing the Earth. The spectrum of the WIS covers 18 bands, from visible to thermal infrared, with a swath of 300km. The TIMA is the first-ever system to use interferometric imaging radar altimeter (InIRA) technology to measure sea surface height and land topography at near-nadir angles with a wide swath. In turn, the MUEIS is the world's first large-field atmospheric detector capable of quasi-synchronously detecting the characteristics of ultraviolet limb radiation in the middle atmosphere. The Earth observation data obtained by Tiangong-2 has attracted many research groups and been applied in such diverse areas as land resources, water resources, climate change, environmental monitoring, agriculture, forestry, ecology, oceanography, meteorology and so on. The main subjects considered in this proceedings volume include: payload design, data processing, data service and application. It also provides a comprehensive introduction to the research results gleaned by engineers, researchers and scientists throughout the lifecycle of the Tiangong-2 Earth observation data, which will improve the payload development and enhance remote sensing data applications.

- Abstract
This monograph provides an introductory discussion of evanescent waves and plasmons, describes their properties and uses, and shows how they are fundamental when operating with nanoscale optics. Far field optics is not suitable for the design, description, and operation of devices at this nanometre scale. Instead one must work with models based on near-field optics and surface evanescent waves. The new discipline of plasmonics has grown to encompass the generation and application of plasmons both as a travelling excitation in a nanostructure and as a stationary enhancement of the electrical field near metal nanosurfaces. The book begins with a brief review of the basic concepts of electromagnetism, then introduces evanescent waves through reflection and refraction, and shows how they appear in diffraction problems, before discussing the role that they play in optical waveguides and sensors. The application of evanescent waves in super-resolution devices is briefly presented, before plasmons are introduced. The surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are then treated, highlighting their potential applications also in ultra-compact circuitry. The book concludes with a discussion of the quantization of evanescent waves and quantum information processing. The book is intended for students and researchers who wish to enter the field or to have some insight into the matter. It is not a textbook but simply an introduction to more complete and in-depth discussions. The field of plasmonics has exploded in the last ten years, and most of the material treated in this book is scattered in original or review papers. A short comprehensive treatment is missing; this book is intended to provide just that.
