This book introduces a stability and control methodology named AeroMech, capable of sizing the primary control effectors of fixed wing subsonic to hypersonic designs of conventional and unconventional configuration layout. Control power demands are harmonized with static-, dynamic-, and maneuver stability requirements, while taking the six-degree-of-freedom trim state into account. The stability and control analysis solves the static- and dynamic equations of motion combined with non-linear vortex lattice aerodynamics for analysis. The true complexity of addressing subsonic to hypersonic vehicle stability and control during the conceptual design phase is hidden in the objective to develop a generic (vehicle configuration independent) methodology concept. The inclusion of geometrically asymmetric aircraft layouts, in addition to the reasonably well-known symmetric aircraft types, contributes significantly to the overall technical complexity and level of abstraction. The first three chapters describe the preparatory work invested along with the research strategy devised, thereby placing strong emphasis on systematic and thorough knowledge utilization. Working and living onboard vessels imposes a series of generally low-frequency mechanical vibrations as well as single-impulse shock loads on the human body. Also, exposure to noise is characteristic aboard vessels. Low-frequency vibrations are created by vessel motions, which are produced by the various sea states in conjunction with vessel speed and point of sail. These motions can result in motion sickness, body instability, interruptions of task performance, sleep interruption and fatigue, increased health risk aggravated by shock loads due to slam and reduced human efficiency. Higher-frequency vibration influences comfort and is often associated with rotating machinery. The imposition of higher frequency vibrations (about 1 to 80 Hz) induces corresponding motions and forces within the human body creating discomfort and reduced human efficiency. With regard to noise, the above can similarly affect exposed humans, notably with sleep interruption and resulting fatigue, discomfort, and reduced efficiency. Also of concern are transient and permanent hearing loss, masking of audible signals, and interruption of speech communication. The concerns related to levels and characteristics of noise and vibration are covered in these two books which are related to habitability on ships and offshore structures. The purpose of this Book 2 is to provide clarification for Class Surveyors and plan review engineers to verify consistency of the survey and plan approval processes. Regarding the shaft alignment design and implementation efforts by the shipbuilding industry, this book is designed to further advance the technical approach towards shaft alignment analyses and procedures. The book is arranged to include topics on shaft alignment condition monitoring and a section dedicated to alignment problems and their solutions. Shaft alignment survey requirements are summarised in the introduction and are addressed further under a separate chapter on shaft alignment procedures and practices. Discussion on alignment calculation and measurement is expanded on to include the stern tube bearing clearance measurement. It is universally recognised and accepted that overall ship vibration as an important measure to ensure the habitability, safety and functionality of marine vessels. This book examines the causes and effects of ship vibration to provide users with specific guidance on the design, analysis, measurement procedures and criteria in order to achieve the goal of limiting the ship vibration to an acceptable level. This Book 1 considers the design and construction of the hull, superstructure, and deckhouse of a steel vessel based on all applicable requirements of established classification society (Class) rules. Specifically, for container carriers over 130 metres in length, the Class rules require the consideration of vibratory responses of hull structures, as applicable. For LNG carriers, the Class rules require special attention to the possible collapse of the tank membrane due to hull vibration. For ship-type floating production units with spread mooring, the rules relating to the building and classing of facilities for offshore installations require the flare tower/boom and hull natural frequencies to be separated to avoid resonance or near resonance. This book should be read in conjunction with Book 2, Propulsion Shaft Alignment, which considers the effect of propulsion shaft vibrations. This book provides practical guidelines on the concept design to assist ship designers to avoid excessive shipboard vibration at an early design stage. These guidelines also assist with the finite element analysis (FEA) based vibration analysis procedure to calculate the vibration response and evaluate the design at detail design stage. The analysis procedure represents the current analysis practice used by Class. These guidelines also offer guidelines on the vibration measurement procedure at sea trials and the acceptance criteria on vibration limits based on international maritime industry standards

This textbook provides the fundamentals of aeroelasticity, with particular attention to problems of interest to aeronautical engineering. The mathematical methods and tools applicable to the modern modeling of general aeroelastic problems are presented, discussed, and applied to fixed-wing aircraft configurations. It is composed of ten chapters divided into two parts: (I) aeroelastic modeling and analysis and (ii) mathematical tools. The six chapters that compose the first part start from the historical background of the discipline, then present the methods for coupling structural dynamics and unsteady aerodynamics for the aeroelastic modeling of the typical wing section, and then extend them to applications for twisted, tapered, swept finite-wing configurations. In this context, particular attention is paid to the presentation, interpretation, and discussion of the available unsteady sectional aerodynamic theories, both in the time and frequency domain, providing a broad scenario of the formulations that can be used for conventional and non-conventional aerodynamic/aeroelastic applications. For a modern view of aeroelasticity, a significant portion of the textbook deals with illustration and discussion of three-dimensional aerodynamic theories and computational methods for the determination of unsteady aerodynamic loads over lifting bodies in incompressible and compressible flows, as well as to the introduction and explanation of methodologies for the identification of reduced-order, state-space aerodynamic/aeroelastic operators suitable for stability (flutter) analysis and control purposes. A chapter is dedicated to the theories and approaches for aeroservoelastic modeling. The increasing demand for new civil aircraft pushes aircraft manufacturers to develop innovative solutions that lead in particular to mass reductions. One way to achieve these kinds of improvements is the use of multidisciplinary analysis and optimization. In this sense the intention of this PhD thesis is to develop a multidisciplinary framework in order to quantify the impact of load alleviation function parameter changes on structural components like the wing and fuselage in terms of resulting mass changes. The developed iterative process chain covers the loads calculation including an active load alleviation system, a structural assessment of the wing and fuselage components and a dedicated feedback loop in order to update mass and stiffness properties of the loads calculation model. The study shows that significant mass reductions are achievable while on the other hand estimated mass penalties are irrelevant. In diesem Sinne besteht die Intention dieser Dissertation darin, eine multidisziplinäre Analyseumgebung zu entwickeln, um den Einfluss von Parametervariationen des Lastabminderungssystems auf Strukturkomponenten wie den Flügel und Rumpf mit Bezug auf resultierende Änderungen der Massen zu quantifizieren. Die hierbei entstehende iterative Prozesskette deckt Disziplinen ab, wie z.B. die Lastenberechnung samt Lastabminderungssystem sowie die strukturmechanische Auswertung der Flügel- sowie Rumpfkomponenten. Zudem ist eine Rückkopplung zur Berücksichtigung von Massen- und Steifigkeitsänderungen im Lastenberechnungsmodell implementiert. Die Studie zeigt, dass eine signifikante Reduzierung der Flügelmasse möglich ist, wobei die geschätzte Massenzunahme am Rumpf vernachlässigbar gering ist.

This book explores computational fluid dynamics applied to ship hydrodynamics and provides guidelines for the future developments in the field based on the Tokyo 2015 Workshop. It presents ship hull test cases, experimental data and submitted computational methods, conditions, grids and results. Analysis is made of errors for global (resistance, sinkage, trim and self-propulsion) and local flow (wave elevations, mean velocities and turbulence) variables, including standard deviations for global variables. The effects of grid size and turbulence models are evaluated for both global and local flow variables. Detailed analysis is made of turbulence modeling capabilities for capturing local flow physics. Errors and standard deviations are also assessed for added resistance (captive test cases) and course keeping/speed loss (free running test cases) in head and oblique waves. All submissions are used to evaluate the error and uncertainty by means of a systematic verification and validation (V&V) study along with statistical investigations.

Fluid mechanical aspects of separated and vortical flow in aircraft wing aerodynamics are treated. The focus is on two wing classes: (1) large aspect-ratio wings and (2) small aspect-ratio delta-type wings. Aerodynamic design issues in general are not dealt with. Discrete numerical simulation methods play a progressively larger role in aircraft design and development. Accordingly, in the introduction to the book the different mathematical models are considered, which underlie the aerodynamic computation methods (panel methods, RANS and scale-resolving methods). Special methods are the Euler methods, which as rather inexpensive methods embrace compressibility effects and also permit to describe lifting-wing flow. The concept of the kinematically active and inactive vorticity content of shear layers gives insight into many flow phenomena, but also, with the second break of symmetry---the first one is due to the Kutta condition---an explanation of lifting-wing flow fields. The prerequisite is an extended definition of separation: “flow-off separation” at sharp trailing edges of class (1) wings and at sharp leading edges of class (2) wings. The vorticity-content concept, with a compatibility condition for flow-off separation at sharp edges, permits to understand the properties of the evolving trailing vortex layer and the resulting pair of trailing vortices of class (1) wings. The concept also shows that Euler methods at sharp delta or strake leading edges of class (2) wings can give reliable results. Three main topics are treated: 1) Basic Principles are considered first: boundary-layer flow, vortex theory, the vorticity content of shear layers, Euler solutions for lifting wings, the Kutta condition in reality and the topology of skin-friction and velocity fields. 2) Unit Problems treat isolated flow phenomena of the two wing classes. Capabilities of panel and Euler methods are investigated. One Unit Problem is the flow past the wing of the NASA Common Research Model. Other Unit Problems concern the lee-side vortex system appearing at the Vortex-Flow Experiment 1 and 2 sharp- and blunt-edged delta configurations, at a delta wing with partly round leading edges, and also at the Blunt Delta Wing at hypersonic speed. 3) Selected Flow Problems of the two wing classes. In short sections practical design problems are discussed. The treatment of flow past fuselages, although desirable, was not possible in the frame of this book.
