As a powerful tool to study nonlinear systems and hybrid systems, piecewise affine (PWA) systems have been widely applied to mechanical systems. Control and Estimation of Piecewise Affine Systems presents several research findings relating to the control and estimation of PWA systems in one unified view. Traditional analysis of dynamical systems has restricted its attention to smooth problems, but it has become increasingly clear that there are distinctive phenomena unique to discontinuous systems that can be analyzed mathematically but which fall outside the usual methodology for smooth dynamical systems. The primary purpose of this book is to present a coherent framework for understanding the dynamics of piecewise-smooth and hybrid systems. An informal introduction asserts the ubiquity of such models with examples drawn from mechanics, electronics, control theory and physiology. The main thrust is to classify complex behavior via bifurcation theory in a systematic yet applicable way. The key concept is that of a discontinuity-induced bifurcation, which generalizes diverse phenomena such as grazing, border-collision, sliding, chattering and the period-adding route to chaos. The results are presented in an informal style and illustrated with copious examples, both theoretical and experimental. Aimed at a wide audience of applied mathematicians, engineers and scientists at the early postgraduate level, the book assumes only the standard background of basic calculus and linear algebra for most of the presentation and will be an indispensable resource for students and researchers. This textbook introduces the widely used numerical technique FEM in various engineering disciplines for the analysis of structures, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and other physical phenomena. Appropriate for interested senior undergraduate engineering students and beginner graduate students in a one-semester introductory course, this book provides a clear understanding of the main issues in FEM. Looking at the FEM as a variational approximation method that uses localized piecewise polynomial basis functions for the solution of boundary-value problems (BVP) and initial boundary-value problems (IBVP), the book uses examples to apply this technique to various problems of physical interest, e.g., elasticity, heat conduction, advection-diffusion, etc. One-dimensional (1D) problems are presented first to make it easier to grasp the fundamental concepts associated with the formulation and application of the FEM; then, the methodology is extended to more challenging 2D and 3D problems that involve somewhat greater mathematical complexity. For simplicity, the book deals with problems that are specified in terms of a single set of state variables, such as displacements or temperature. Finally, due to the introductory nature of this text, only linear problems are considered.

The book is of interest to scientists involved in academic studies and for practitioners engaged in high-level design. Chapter I reports the investigation of non-stationary wave propagation in continuously inhomogeneous cylindrical elements (such as pipelines). New results obtained by numerical analysis of non-stationary wave propagation are presented. The cases studied comprise simulations of the propagations of both one-dimensional and two-dimensional non-stationary waves. Waves of the first type are supposed to propagate in continuously inhomogeneous, linearly viscoelastic cylinders, whereas waves of the second type propagate in continuously inhomogeneous elastic cylinders. The authors of this chapter apply an original research method consisting of the implementation of solutions to dynamic problems in the study of elastic and linearly viscoelastic piecewise homogeneous bodies. Chapter II outlines an analytical study of the propagation of different types of waves (plane, cylindrical, spherical) as well as of the waves'interaction with an element of Vibro-isolation (specifically, a three-layer plate). The author also presents the numerical results of the study of the distribution of the vibration accelerations in soil. Chapter III presents details on the analytical modeling of a bearing device for passive seismic isolation (friction-pendulum system). The behavior of the slider is identical to a motion of a particle constrained to slide on a spherical surface. The analytical model includes equations of motion, derived using the Lagrange formalism and constitutive equations of the sliding interface. The author presents the results of the numerical simulation of the response of the bearing device to a seismic event, assuming a constant value of the friction coefficient. Chapter IV proposes a discussion on the assessment of the load-carrying capacity of a metal-resin anchor and the determination of dependencies between parameters of supporting systems that include anchors. The solution to the problems addressed in this study involves an accurate analysis of the load transfer mechanisms between different system components. The proposed strategy requires the implementation of an algorithm aimed at the reconstruction of the analytical form of a function, provided its tabular form is available. The authors also formulate a theorem that postulates the existence of such representation applicable in a more general context. The research object in Chapter V is the formulation of the boundary value problems for circular and annular three-layer plates subjected to axisymmetric loading. The considered plates consist of three layers: two thin bearing layers and one filler layer, with a perfect bond, assumed for all interfaces. The definition of the stress-strain state in the plates presumes that the Kirchhoff's hypotheses regarding the bearing layers and the Timoshenko's hypothesis (i.e., linear distribution of the tangential displacements over the thickness) concerning the filler layer hold. The performed analyses take into account the characteristics of the elastic (Winkler) foundation. The authors provide the obtained analytical solutions to the formulated boundary value problems. Results obtained by numerical analysis of the stress and the strain distributions for plates supported by hinges on the contour are also presented.

This book gives an introduction to the finite element method as a general computational method for solving partial differential equations approximately. Our approach is mathematical in nature with a strong focus on the underlying mathematical principles, such as approximation properties of piecewise polynomial spaces, and variational formulations of partial differential equations, but with a minimum level of advanced mathematical machinery from functional analysis and partial differential equations. In principle, the material should be accessible to students with only knowledge of calculus of several variables, basic partial differential equations, and linear algebra, as the necessary concepts from more advanced analysis are introduced when needed. This book describes a second-generation force-based method emerging from a general formulation where the partial differential equations of elasticity are replaced by equivalent algebraic equations. These algebraic equations of linear elasticity can be used to solve statically indeterminate problems in reduced forms that define either the new second-generation force-based approach or a new displacement-based approach. The new force-based method can serve as the basis for teaching students at many technical levels how to solve equilibrium problems directly for the forces present. In elasticity courses, the derivation and use of the algebraic equations of linear elasticity can show how the difficulties of dealing with partial differential equations may be avoided by transforming those equations into algebraic equations with work-energy concepts. In a finite element course, a force-based finite element method can be described along with the traditional displacement-based approach to demonstrate how the two methods provide alternative ways for solving complex structural problems. The International Scientific and Technical Conference “Integrated Computer Technologies in Mechanical Engineering” – Synergetic Engineering (ICTM) was established by National Aerospace University “Kharkiv Aviation Institute”. The Conference ICTM'2023 was held in Kharkiv, Ukraine, during December, 2023. During this conference, technical exchanges between the research community were carried out in the forms of keynote speeches, panel discussions, as well as special session. In addition, participants were treated to a series of receptions, which forge collaborations among fellow researchers. ICTM'2023 received 202 papers submissions from different countries. ​Der Leerguttransportoptimierung als Teil der Inboundlogistik kommt die wichtige Aufgabe der bedarfs- und termingerechten Versorgung von Lieferanten mit wiederverwendbaren Ladungsträgern zu. Dadurch gewährleistet sie nicht nur eine reibungslose Teileversorgung, sondern kann auch einen signifikanten Beitrag zu einer effizienten und nachhaltigen Logistik im Ladungsträgernetzwerk der Zukunft leisten.Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich der Problemstellung der Leerguttransportoptimierung aus mathematischer Sicht und verfolgt das Ziel der Bestimmung eines bedarfserfüllungsmaximalen und gleichzeitig transportkostenminimalen Transportplans unter Berücksichtigung von Leergutverfügbarkeiten, -bedarfen, Transportkosten und -laufzeiten. Dafür werden drei verschiedene Steuerungsstrategien für das Ladungsträgernetzwerk der Zukunft vorgestellt und spezifische Konstruktions- und Verbesserungsheuristiken entwickelt. Anhand der Ergebnisse einer experimentellen Performanceanalyse wird eine Empfehlung für eine Steuerungsstrategie samt geeigneten Lösungsverfahren zur Transportoptimierung im Ladungsträgernetzwerk der Zukunft gegeben, die die Ziele der Bedarfserfüllungsmaximierung sowie Transportkosten- und Emissionsausstoßminimierung bestmöglich vereinen.

In contrast to metals, a composite material acquires an internal structure where the imprint of its manufacturing process history is a significant part of the internal structure's makeup and in many cases determines how the material responds to external impulses. The performance for which a composite material is designed must therefore be assessed with due consideration to the manufacturing-induced features in the material volume. To make proper investments in economy, the authors need to have a good understanding of the future trends: how will demand change, how will prices change, etc. In general, in science, the usual way to make predictions is: to identify a model that best fits the current dynamics, and to use this model to predict the future behavior. In many practical situations—especially in economics—our past experiences are limited. As a result, the authors can only achieve a partial identification. It is therefore important to be able to make predictions based on such partially identified models—which is the main focus of this book. This book emphasizes partial identification techniques, but it also describes and uses other econometric techniques, ranging from more traditional statistical techniques to more innovative ones such as game-theoretic approach, interval techniques, and machine learning. Multi-agent coordination is an emerging engineering It has been inspired by the observations and descriptions of collective behavior in nature, such as fish schooling, birds flocking and insects swarming. The advantages of multi-agent coordination include: it can reduce cost and complexity from hardware platform to software and algorithms; in addition, multi-agent systems are capable of many tasks which could not be effectively performed by a single-robot system, for example, the surveillance task. The book proposes a hierarchical design framework that places uncertainties related to system models in the decentralized control layer (bottom layer) and the ones related to the communication (as well as physical interaction) between the agents in the distributed decision-making layer (top layer).
