1965 Transactions of the Third International Vacuum Congress, Volume 1: Invited Papers is the first of two-volumes that review the state of knowledge in vacuum technology. The present volume comprises the opening address by Prof Auwárter and the twelve comprehensive main lectures. In keeping with the purpose of an international congress, the organizers took great pains to ensure that the choice of topics for the main lectures not only covered the scientific fundamentals as a whole, but also gave appropriate consideration to the technical applications. The papers published in the transactions originate from many European and overseas countries, proof that vacuum science is not only keenly pursued in all major industrial countries, but also that the new organizational form of the IUVSTA is capable of winning the services of all these countries for fruitful international cooperation in the vacuum field.

Advances in Microwaves, Volume 1 is a collection of papers dealing with the design and fabrication of a two-mile accelerator, optical waveguides, and directional couplers. One of the great weaknesses of modern engineering design practice is lack of information-retrieval facilities for obtaining scientific and technological information relevant to the design. When confronted with a new problem, the engineer often scarcely knows where to turn for such information. Even in our modern society this information is extremely difficult to obtain. There is some hope that the advent of giant computerized information-retrieval centres will soon alleviate this problem. This is particularly true of mechanizing the search for journal papers and magazine articles on very specific topics for which the designer is able to make very specific requests. However, very often the designer requires broad generalized information that is difficult to specify and is usually found in books. Reference lists of books and general papers under broad subject-categories are needed. This book is an attempt to meet this need in the general field of Mechanical Engineering. It is also intended to show the user the techniques of using information sources. The book should be useful to designers, researchers, and teachers in all areas of Mechanical Engineering.

Festkorperprobleme X: Advances in Solid State Physics is a compilation of papers and lectures on semiconductor physics, low temperature physics, thermodynamics, and metal physics of the German Physical Society, Freudenstadt, on April 6-11, 1970.
