IFIP Working Group 5.2 has organized a series of workshops aimed at presenting and discussing current issues and future perspectives of Geometric Modeling in the CAD environment. From Geometric Modeling to Shape Modeling comprises the proceedings of the seventh GEO workshop, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Parma, Italy in October 2000. This volume contains the selected papers of the first I.D.M.M.E. conference on'Integrated Design and Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering', held in Nantes from 15-17 April 1996. Its objective was to discuss the questions related to the definition of the optimal design and manufacturing processes and to their integration through coherent methodologies in adapted environments. The initiative of the Conference and the organization thereof, is mainly due to the efforts of the french PRIMECA group (Pool of Computer Resources for Mechanics) started eight years ago. We were able to attract the internationru community with the support of the International Institution for Production Engineering Research (C.I.R.P.). The conference brought together two hundred and fifty specialists from around the world. About ninety papers and twenty posters were presented covering three main topics : optimization and evaluation of the product design process, optimization and evaluation of the manufacturing systems and methodological aspects.

In the field of plastics technology, the process of extrusion is widespread and important. It is employed in the compounding and pelletising of plastics materials, in their conversion into products (such as profiles, pipe, hose, sheet, film or bottles) and in the coating of wires, cables, paper, board or foil. A major reason for its use is the screw extruder's ability to melt efficiently and pump continuously large amounts of plastics materials. The understanding of the melting/pumping operation of the extruder and the development of larger and faster-running machines so as to give higher outputs have been given great attention and the results have been widely published. However, the whole manufacturing technology for extruded products has also developed, particularly in recent years. This has occurred not only by the use of modern screw extruders, but also by the incorporation of improved process control systems, the better design of dies and extrudate handling machinery and by the utilisation of improved plastics materials and additives. It is the purpose of this book to present selected topics which contribute to, or exemplify, these developments in extrusion-based processes.

Many important industrial applications incline toward better understanding of the constitutive properties of matter. Nowadays, the development of measurement possibilities, even in nanoscale, allows for multiscale formulations that drive to the more sophisticated models used in continuum mechanics. These phenomenological models are particularly important and useful for solutions of very concrete initial boundary value problems. Our interests are focused mainly on detailed descriptions of material behavior that depend not only on simple stress-strain relationships but also includes the strong influence of loading type, which introduces temperature, strain rate dependence, fracture, etc. Understanding these physics phenomena is of fundamental importance for successful and responsible computations. In particular, using the popular commercial programs requires deep understanding of constitutive formulations and their restrictions. These lectures are addressed to industrial users who are responsible for making crucial decisions in design, as well as, to young scientists who work on new models that describe the behavior of materials which also account the new influences and reflect the complexity of the material behavior. At the end, let me express my gratitude to the lecturers of the CISM course No. 328 on “Advances in Constitutive Relations Applied in Computer Codes”, held in Udine in July 2007, who finally prepared the included materials. Unfortunately, during the preparation and collecting papers for this book, our friend and colleague Prof. Janusz R. Klepaczko passed away. This is a very big loss for the society of mechanics.

To reduce the energy consumption by turbopumps, it is imp- tant to increase the ef ciency of the pumps, as well as the system they are working in. Working and living onboard vessels imposes a series of generally low-frequency mechanical vibrations as well as single-impulse shock loads on the human body. Also, exposure to noise is characteristic aboard vessels. Low-frequency vibrations are created by vessel motions, which are produced by the various sea states in conjunction with vessel speed and point of sail. These motions can result in motion sickness, body instability, interruptions of task performance, sleep interruption and fatigue, increased health risk aggravated by shock loads due to slam and reduced human efficiency. Higher-frequency vibration influences comfort and is often associated with rotating machinery. The imposition of higher frequency vibrations (about 1 to 80 Hz) induces corresponding motions and forces within the human body creating discomfort and reduced human efficiency. With regard to noise, the above can similarly affect exposed humans, notably with sleep interruption and resulting fatigue, discomfort, and reduced efficiency. Also of concern are transient and permanent hearing loss, masking of audible signals, and interruption of speech communication. The concerns related to levels and characteristics of noise and vibration are covered in this and the other titles in the series related to ship vibration and noise control. be granted any of the associated habitability notations, specific noise and vibration criteria must be met. The book reviews the algebra, trigonometry, and basic calculus students need to be successful in solving problems. Next, a review of kinematics and Newton's laws are discussed, and numerous examples are solved. Mechanisms include the slider crank, offset slider crank, gears and gear trains, belts and chains, and cams. A graphical and analytical approach is taken when covering slider crank mechanisms. Working and living onboard vessels imposes a series of generally low-frequency mechanical vibrations as well as single-impulse shock loads on the human body. Also, exposure to noise is characteristic aboard vessels. Low-frequency vibrations are created by vessel motions, which are produced by the various sea states in conjunction with vessel speed and point of sail. These motions can result in motion sickness, body instability, interruptions of task performance, sleep interruption and fatigue, increased health risk aggravated by shock loads due to slam and reduced human efficiency. Higher-frequency vibration influences comfort and is often associated with rotating machinery. The imposition of higher frequency vibrations (about 1 to 80 Hz) induces corresponding motions and forces within the human body creating discomfort and reduced human efficiency. With regard to noise, the above can similarly affect exposed humans, notably with sleep interruption and resulting fatigue, discomfort, and reduced efficiency. Also of concern are transient and permanent hearing loss, masking of audible signals, and interruption of speech communication. The concerns related to levels and characteristics of noise and vibration are covered in these two books which are related to habitability on ships and offshore structures. The purpose of this Book 2 is to provide clarification for Class Surveyors and plan review engineers to verify consistency of the survey and plan approval processes. Regarding the shaft alignment design and implementation efforts by the shipbuilding industry, this book is designed to further advance the technical approach towards shaft alignment analyses and procedures. The book is arranged to include topics on shaft alignment condition monitoring and a section dedicated to alignment problems and their solutions. Shaft alignment survey requirements are summarised in the introduction and are addressed further under a separate chapter on shaft alignment procedures and practices. This book contains and summarizes research carried out within the DFG Priority Programme 1897:'Calm, Smooth and Smart - Novel Approaches for Influencing Vibrations by Means of Deliberately Introduced Dissipation'. The contributions help reduce unwanted vibrations by developing novel approaches for influencing them and lead to a “calm, smooth and smart” behaviour of technical units. “Calm” represents the demand to avoid or at least to severely reduce unwanted noise generated by technical installations. “Smooth” ensures a still comfortable and jerk-free operation of them.
