Currently, if from the perspective of governing equations, diffusion metamaterials and wave metamaterials (pioneered by J. B. This book covers electrostatic properties of hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), a fascinating class of metamaterials which combine dielectric and metal components. Due to the hyperbolic topology of the isofrequency surface in HMMs, the so-called resonance cone direction exists, and as a result, propagation of quasi-electrostatic waves, or more commonly, electrostatic waves close to the resonance cone with large wave vectors, is possible. However, the investigation of electrostatic wave properties in HMMs is largely overlooked in most works on the subject, and the purpose of this monograph is to fill this gap. This book presents the design of different switching and resonant devices using the present state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) micromachining (MEMS) technology. Different topologies of MEMS switches have been discussed considering optimum performances over microwave to millimeter wave frequency range. Wide varieties of micromachined switching networks starting from single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) to single-pole-fourteen-throw (SP14T) are discussed utilizing vertical and lateral actuation movements of the switch. Different transduction mechanisms of micromachined resonators are highlighted that includes capacitive, piezoelectric, and piezoresistive types. The book provides major design guidelines for the development of MEMS-based digital phase shifters, tunable filters, and antennas with extensive measurement data. Apart from the radio frequency (RF) requirements, an extensive guideline is given for the improvement of the reliability of micromachined switches and digital phaseshifters where multiple switches are operating simultaneously. It takes multiple iterations and extensive characterizations to conclude with a reliable MEMS digital phase shifter, and these aspects are given one of the prime attentions in this book. Detailed performance analysis of metamaterial inspired MEMS switches is then discussed for application in millimeter wave frequency bands up to about 170 GHz. This book presents how metasurfaces are exploited to develop new low-cost single sensor based multispectral cameras. Multispectral cameras extend the concept of conventional colour cameras to capture images with multiple color bands and with narrow spectral passbands. Images from a multispectral camera can extract significant amount of additional information that the human eye or a normal camera fails to capture and thus have important applications in precision agriculture, forestry, medicine, object identifications, and classifications. Conventional multispectral cameras are made up of multiple image sensors each externally fitted with a narrow passband wavelength filters, optics and multiple electronics. The need for multiple sensors for each band results in a number of problems such as being bulky, power hungry and suffering from image co-registration problems which in turn limits their wide usage. The above problems can be eliminated if a multispectral camera is developed using one single image sensor.​

The fundamental optical excitations that are confined to a metal/dielectric interface are the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), as described by Ritchie. SPPs can be referred to as electromagnetic excitations existing at an interface between two media, of which at least one is conducting. Investigating spoof plasmons in a semiconductor is becoming an increasingly active area of research. The field of plasmonics deals with the application of surface and interface plasmons. It is an area in which surface plasmon-based circuits merge the fields of photonics and electronics at the nanoscale. Recently, an idea of engineering surface plasmons at lower frequencies was suggested. It was concluded in that the existence of holes in the structure can lower the frequency of existing surface plasmons. Thus, by cutting holes or grooves in metal surfaces, it is possible to take concepts such as highly localized waveguiding and superfocusing to lower frequencies, particularly to the THz regime, whereplasmonics could enable near-field imaging and biosensing with unprecedented sensitivity. It is the main reason to use the terminology'spoof surface plasmons'for the bound surface waves propagating along the perforated structures. This thesis proposes novel designs of phononic crystal plates (PhPs) allowing ultra-wide controllability frequency ranges of guided waves at low frequencies, with promising structural and tunability characteristics. It reports on topology optimization of bi-material-layered (1D) PhPs allowing maximized relative bandgap width (RBW) at target filling fractions and demonstrates multiscale functionality of gradient PhPs. It also introduces a multi-objective topology optimization method for 2D porous PhPs allowing both maximized RBW and in-plane stiffness and addresses the critical role of considering stiffness in designing porous PhPs. The multi-objective topology optimization method is then expanded for designing 2D porous PhPs with deformation induced tunability. A variety of innovative designs are introduced which their maximized broadband RBW is enhanced by, is degraded by or is insensitive to external finite deformation. Not only does this book address the challenges of new topology optimization methods for computational design of phononic crystals; yet, it demonstrated the suitability and applicability of the topological designs by experimental validation. Metamaterials: Beyond Crystals, Noncrystals, and Quasicrystals is a comprehensive and updated research monograph that focuses on recent advances in metamaterials based on the effective medium theory in microwave frequencies. This book describes a metamaterial-based active absorber for potential biomedical engineering applications. Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy is an important tool for imaging in the field of biomedical engineering, due to the non-invasive, non-ionizing nature of terahertz radiation coupled with its propagation characteristics in water, which allows the operator to obtain high-contrast images of skin cancers, burns, etc. without detrimental effects. In order to tap this huge potential, it is important to build highly efficient biomedical imaging systems by introducing terahertz absorbers into biomedical detectors. The biggest challenge faced in the fulfilment of this objective is the lack of naturally occurring dielectrics, which is overcome with the use of artificially engineered resonant materials, viz. metamaterials. This book describes such a metamaterial-based active absorber. The design has been optimized using particle swarm optimization (PSO), eventually resulting in an ultra-thin active terahertz absorber. The absorber shows near unity absorption for a tuning range of terahertz (THz) application.

Metamaterials are artificially designed materials engineered to acquire their properties by their specific structure rather than their composition. They are considered a major scientific breakthrough and have attracted enormous attention over the past decade. The major challenge in obtaining an optical metamaterial active at visible frequencies is the fabrication of complex continuous metallic structures with nano metric features.This thesis presents the fabrication and characterization of optical metamaterials made by block copolymer self assembly. This approach allows fabrication of an intriguing and complex continuous 3D architecture called a gyroid, which is replicated into active plasmonic materials such as gold. The optical properties endowed by this particular gyroid geometry include reduction of plasma frequency, extraordinarily enhanced optical transmission, and a predicted negative refractive index. To date, this is the 3D optical metamaterial with the smallest features ever made.

One of the most important developing fields is that of digital communication. This is due to the demand for an increasingly higher speed in the exchange of information, which is presently growing at an exponential rate. In fact, considerable efforts have been made towards the realization of low-power miniaturized radio frequency components. However, issues related to design and fabrication of efficient, ultra-compact, and easily integrate-able microwave components appear to be challenging. Many unit cells are needed in order to achieve high efficiency components, such as filters and couplers, whose dimensions are comparable or larger than a single wavelength cycle. However, during the past decade, metamaterials, a novel class of artificial materials, have become a field of active research in physics and engineering. These metamaterials offer unique electrodynamic properties, which are neither available in any natural material nor observable in the materials presently used in state-of-the-art technology. Furthermore, a metamaterials unit cell is much smaller than the wavelength of reference. The main objective of my dissertation was to design and realize new resonator structures to meet the challenges of simple, high performance, and miniaturized microwave circuits as well as terahertz components for filtering and sensing applications. First of all, I suggested a series of novel structures for filter applications. They consist of only a single metal layer, an approach which I suggested for the first time worldwide. Later on, I realized more advanced miniaturized resonators based on the same idea. Secondly, although microwave filters are often physically very compact, they can contribute significantly to the delay in microwave circuits. The study of the group delay is very important in radar and ultra-wideband communication systems. Moreover, group delay issues are crucial in wireless communication systems. The bit rate of such systems is highly affected by the group delay of the system's components. Therefore, studying the group delay behavior for microwave filters is quite important from a system perspective. My work presents a study on the group delay behavior of coplanar waveguide structures loaded with pairs of split-ring resonators and strip lines. Finally, frequency selective surface (FSS) devices (also known as planar metamaterials) are highly desirable for efficient sensor and filter designs. Conventional FSSs are simply unable to provide the large-volume confinement of the electromagnetic field necessary to support high quality (-Q) resonances. A new kind of asymmetrical resonators is exploited for thin-film sensing. It offers a very high sensitivity at very small scales. Instead of a conventional FSS free-space setup, a single mode rectangular waveguide has been employed with a single asymmetrical double split resonator (aDSR) positioned inside. The above sensor concept can be easily miniaturized through the linear scaling of its geometrical dimensions for sensing applications at higher frequencies, e.g. in the terahertz regime. While aDSRs provide a stopband behavior, many applications require just the dual response, i.e. a passband characteristic. I appeal to this need by applying Babinet's principle to aDSRs. The resulting structures are complementary aDSRs, which offer the desired dual behavior. The Q-factor of the above structures is much higher than that of conventional resonators, however the size needs to be further reduced. This motivates me to propose a new structure with single split geometry. Not only it has much better performances, but its size is less than half that of aDSRs.

Light is in a sense “one-handed” when interacting with atoms of conventional materials. This is because out of the two field components of light, electric and magnetic, only the electric “hand” efficiently probes the atoms of a material, whereas the magnetic component remains relatively unused because the interaction of atoms with the magnetic field component of light is normally weak. Metamaterials, i.e. artificial materials with rationally designed properties, can enable the coupling of both of the field components of light to meta-atoms, enabling entirely new optical properties and exciting applications with such “two-handed” light. Among the fascinating properties is a negative refractive index. The refractive index is one of the most fundamental characteristics of light propagation in materials. Metamaterials with negative refraction may lead to the development of a superlens capable of imaging objects and their fine structures that are much smaller than the wavelength of light. Other exciting applications of metamaterials include novel antennae with superior properties, optical nano-lithography and nano-circuits, and “meta-coatings” that can make objects invisible. The word “meta” means “beyond” in Greek, and in this sense the name “metamaterials” refers to “beyond conventional materials.” Metamaterials are typically man-made and have properties not available in nature.
