This book develops innovative techniques from operational research and management science for the design and implementation of a reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS), and subsequently analyzes and assesses their performance. A reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) is a paradigm that can address many of the challenges posed by the modern market. This book provides an overview of essential research on and developments in the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) direct-writing technique and its applications. Firstly, it presents mechano- and helix electrospinning methods to achieve direct writing of straight/serpentine micro/nano fibers in high resolution. Secondly, it examines functional inks and multi nozzle arrays for EHD printing, which are used to efficientlyform patterns and devices. Thirdly, the book discusses the various control methods adopted in the context of EHD to improve the controllability of the electrospun fibers. This book focuses on the design of Robotic Flexible Assembly Cell (RFAC) with multi-robots. Its main contribution consists of a new effective strategy for scheduling RFAC in a multi-product assembly environment, in which dynamic status and multi-objective optimization problems occur. The developed strategy, which is based on a combination of advanced solution approaches such as simulation, fuzzy logic, system modeling and the Taguchi optimization method, fills an important knowledge gap in the current literature and paves the way for future research towards the goal of employing flexible assembly systems as effectively as possible despite the complexity of their scheduling.

„Customizing“ oder Individualisierung ist längst kein neumodisches „Buzzword“ von Marketingexperten mehr, sondern steht für die etablierte Erwartungshaltung des Konsumenten gegenüber Produktherstellern. Die vorliegende Arbeit klärt, inwiefern Kundenindividualisierung bei Sportartikeln markenbezogene und/oder leistungs- bzw. produktbezogene Ausprägung besitzt und hat zum Ziel, die Schnittstelle für mögliche Wechselwirkungen zwischen Marke und Produkt zu identifizieren und zu beschreiben. Dabei wird auf Basis sekundäranalytischer Recherche ein Ausgangsmodell entwickelt, welches das Konsumentenverhalten bei individuellem Konsum mit Sportbezug abbildet. Dieses theoretische Ausgangsmodell ist Grundlage der durchgeführten empirischen quantitativen Untersuchung. Mit Hilfe statistischer Analyseverfahren können die konkreten Wechselwirkungen aufgezeigt werden.

Industrial Production Management in Flexible Manufacturing Systems addresses the present discussions surrounding flexible production systems based on automation, robotics and cybernetics as they continue to replace the traditional production systems. The book also covers issues related to the use of multi-servicing in the operational management of the industrial production and its scheduling systems.

Konzepte für flexibel automatisierte Montagesysteme können systematisiert und in modular aufgebaute Strukturen gefaßt werden. In dieser Publikation werden am Beispiel eines Produktspektrums aus der Elektromechanik und Feinwerktechnik hierzu Montagesysteme analysiert und die grundsätzlichen Zusammenhänge in der Montage hergeleitet. Das Ergebnis ist eine parametrisierte Beschreibungssystematik für Montagesysteme und Komponenten. Auf dieser Systematik lassen sich flexible Montagesysteme durch Parametervariation in allen strukturellen Ebenen aufbauen. Hieraus kann ein modulares Baukastensystem für die Montage der betrachteten Produkte entwickelt und verifiziert werden. Um die Planung derartig flexibler Systeme zu unterstützen, wird die Beschreibungssytematik in zwei Rechenprogramme eingebunden. Mit diesen Programmen sind Aussagen über Rationalisierungsschwerpunkte, den zielgerichteten Einsatz einer flexiblen Montagestruktur und deren Nutzen möglich.

Modular products are products that fulfill various overall functions through the combination of distinct building blocks or modules, in the sense that the overall function performed by the product can be divided into sub-functions that can be implemented by different modules or components. An important aspect of modular products is the creation of a basic core unit to which different components (modules) can be fitted, thus enabling a variety of versions of the same module to be produced. The core should have sufficient capacity to cope with all expected variations in performance and usage. Components used in a modular product must have features that enable them to be coupled together to form a complex product. Modularity will promote: reduction in product development time; customization and upgrades; cost efficiencies due to amortization; quality design standardization; and reduction in order lead time. The purpose of this book is to develop a structured approach to the design of products using the concept of modularity, assembly, and manufacturability. The book has proposed and developed a structured and systematic approach to product and systems design using the modularity concept. Mathematical and genetic algorithm models are developed to support the developed methodology.

Mit zunehmender Komplexität und Dynamik der globalen Rahmenbedingungen wird die Fähigkeit zur flexiblen Anpassung an veränderte Anforderungen zum Erfolgsfaktor von Unternehmungen in der heutigen Zeit. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird Flexibilität in der Betriebswirtschaft vielfältig diskutiert. Neben der systematischen Darstellung von Forschungsstand und Terminologie geht es in der Arbeit um die Entwicklung von Grundsätzen des Flexibilitätsmanagements sowie die prozessuale Flexibilitätsgestaltung. Eine empirische Studie untersucht dann, welche Bedeutung der Flexibilität in der Praxis beizumessen ist, wodurch sie beeinflusst wird und welche Indikatoren die Unternehmungsflexibilität prägen. Einheitliches Flexibilitätsverständnis, ganzheitliche Sichtweise, kontextspezifische Ausprägung und kontinuierliche Gestaltung sind zentrale Implikationen der Arbeit.

Customer-driven manufacturing is the key concept for the factory of the future. The markets for consumer goods are nowadays marked by an increase in variety, while at the same time showing steadily decreasing product life-cycles. In addition, tailoring the product to the customer's needs is becoming increasingly important in quality improvement. These trends are resulting in production in small batches, driven by customer orders. Customer-driven Manufacturing adopts a design-oriented approach, splitting the realisation of customer-driven manufacturing into three main steps. Firstly, you must understand the primary process of your business. The second step is to analyse and re-design the management and control of the organisation. Finally, the organisation's information system must be analysed and redesigned.

The assembly sector is one of the least automated in the manufacturing industry. Automation is essential if industrial companies are to be competitive in the future. In assembly, an integrated and flexible approach is needed because 75% of the applications are produced in small and medium batches. The methodologies developed in this book deal with the integration of the assembly process from the initial design of the product to its production. In such an integrated system, assembly planning is one of the most important features. A well-chosen assembly plan will reduce both the number of tool changes and the fixtures within the assembly cell. It will prevent the handling of unstable subassemblies, simplify the design of the robot grippers and reduce production costs. An automatic generator of assembly sequences can be an efficient aid to the designer. Whenever he or she modifies features of the product, the influence of these modifications can immediately be checked on the sequences. For small batch production, the automatic generation of assembly sequences is faster, more reliable and more cost-effective than manual generation. By using this latter method interesting sequences could be missed because of the combinatorial explosion of solutions. The main subjects treated in this book are as follows. 1. Presentation and classification of existing systems of automatic generation of assembly sequences. Automatic assembly planning is, indeed, a very recent research area and, in my experience, no systematic study has been carried out up to now.

Mass Customization: A Supply Chain Approach is a text on the emerging topic of mass customization in manufacturing. The contributed chapters in this book provide a unified treatment to the topic by offering coverage in four main categories - concepts and current state of research; problem solving frameworks, models, and methodologies; supportive techniques and technologies for enabling mass customization; and future research agenda. Für viele Bereiche der Produktions- und Fertigungstechnik sind zunehmend komplexere und mit hoher Präzision ablaufende Produktionsprozesse erforderlich, die aus technologischen und wirtschaftlichen Gründen zwangsläufig über einen hohen Automatisierungsgrad und eine hohe Flexibilität verfügen müssen. Mit dieser Entwicklung einher geht die Forderung nach autonomen Produktionsanlagen, die in der Lage sind, komplexe Produktionsprozesse mit einem maximalen Grad an Selbständigkeit über einen längeren Zeitraum zuverlässig und störungsfrei durchzuführen. Zur Erfüllung dieser Forderung sind jedoch entscheidende Erweiterungen bezüglich der Funktionalität und Leistungsfähigkeit heutiger Produktionsanlagen erforderlich, bis aus einer Werkzeugmaschine eine autonome Produktionszelle wird. Dieser Handlungsbedarf wurde von mehreren Forschungseinrichtungen der RWTH Aachen aufgegriffen und führte dort zur Einrichtung des Sonderforschungsbereiches 368, der von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft gefördert wurde. Die Ergebnisse dieser Forschungsarbeiten, welche sich entsprechend den Funktionen einer autonomen Produktionszelle über die Themengebiete Planung, Steuerung, Benutzungsschnittstelle, Handhabung, Prozessüberwachung und Störungsmanagement erstrecken, werden exemplarisch anhand der Fräs- und Laserbearbeitung in diesem Buch zusammengefasst. Somit leistet dieses Buch einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Optimierung einer effizienten und modernen Fertigung.

Agile manufacturing is defined as the capability of surviving and prospering in a competitive environment of continuous and unpredictable change by reacting quickly and effectively to changing markets, driven by customer-designed products and services. Critical to successfully accomplishing AM are a few enabling technologies such as the standard for the exchange of products (STEP), concurrent engineering, virtual manufacturing, component-based hierarchical shop floor control system, information and communication infrastructure, etc.The scope of the book is to present the undergraduate and graduate students, senior managers and researchers in manufacturing systems design and management, industrial engineering and information technology with the conceptual and theoretical basis for the design and implementation of AMS. Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) involve substituting machines capable of performing a wide and redefinable variety of tasks for machines dedicated to the performance of specific tasks. FMS can also be programmed to handle new products, thus extending the machines'life cycles. Thus they represent a change from'standardized goods produced by customized machines'to'customized goods produced by standardized machines'. This volume contains new and updated material in this field, and will be of great interest to researchers, managers and students concerned with problems related to flexible manufacturing systems.
