Although the title of this book is Paper Chemistry, it should be considered as a text about the chemistry of the formation of paper from aqueous suspensions of fibre and other additives, rather than as a book about the chemistry of the raw material itself. It is the subject of what papermakers call wet-end chemistry. There are many other excellent texts on the chemistry of cellulose and apart from one chapter on the accessibility of cellulose, the subject is not addressed here. Neither does the book deal with the chemistry of pulp preparation (from wood, from other plant sources or from recycled fibres), for there are also many excellent texts on this subject. The first edition of this book was a great success and soon became established as one of the Bibles of the industry. Its achievement then was to collect the considerable advances in understanding which had been made in the chemistry of papermaking in previous years, and provide, for the first time, a sound physico chemical basis of the subject. This new edition has been thoroughly updated with much new material added. The formation of paper is a continuous filtration process in which cellulosic fibres are formed into a network which is then pressed and dried. The important chemistry involved in this process is firstly the retention of col­ loidal material during filtration and secondly the modification of fibre and sheet properties so as to widen the scope for the use of paper and board products.

Today, pursuing quality has changed greatly compared to thirty years ago. It is no longer a question of simply complying with technical specifications, but rather the quest by an organization that leads to meeting and, if possible, exceeding customer expectations with an ever attentive look at cost reduction through optimization, but above all, with a total involvement by people – the true and only wealth of an organization. This is the view that lies at the basis of this book. We speak of quality in a broader sense compared to the mere control system of quality parameters, identified in the critical points of the production process. Hence what, where, how and when to perform checks, how to be efficient in full respect of procedures, how to equip a laboratory, what instruments to use and what quality means in the production of tissue paper, in order to be able to meet and exceed market expectations, while at the same time proposing the development of new products.

Following the release of ISO 5500x set of standards, the 9th WCEAM addresses the hugely important issue of what constitutes the body of knowledge in Engineering Asset Management. Commercial demands and increasing global competition have led to enormous mechanical evolution over recent years. Twin-wires, wide-nip presses, steam boxes and speed sizers have all played a part in improving both the productivity and quality of paper and board products. With the emphasis on mechanical and electrical engineering and the ever increasing pressures of quality measurement and control, little time has been available within a technical department for much reflection on the chemistry of the process. Thus there is a growing trend for the management of the wet-end to be delegated to the chemical supplier. The advances in scale of paper manufacture, environmental sensitivity and higher quality of end-product requirements have all had an impact on the chemistry of the wet-end. The increased production means, for example, that down time is more of an anathema now when capacity is critical. Similarly, with the greater rigours of quality management, anything which causes breaks or holes must be eradicated. Environmental pressures too are growing on the papermaking process. Even if consideration is restricted to only the closure of the white water circuit, it alone throws down a challenge to the potency of biocides, retention aids and other chemicals. These chemicals are detriment­ ally affected by an increasing concentration of water soluble pulp extractives and surfactants, adhesives and polysaccharides from broke and recycled paper.

Writing high-quality papers suitable for publication within international scientific journals is now an essential skill for all early-career researchers; their career progression and the reputation of the department in which they work depends upon it. However, many manuscripts are rejected or sent back for major re-working not because the science they contain is in any way'bad', but because the same problems keep occurring in the way that the material is presented. It is one thing to write a good scientific paper, however it is quite another thing to get it published. This requires some additional nous. In writing this book Don Harris draws upon nearly a quarter of a century of experience as an author and reviewer of research papers, and ultimately as a journal editor. By his own admission, it contains all the things he wished that his mentors had told him 25 years ago, but didn't. The material in the book is drawn from many years of finding all these things out for himself, usually by trial and error (but mostly error!). The text adopts a much lighter touch than is normally found in books of this type - after all, who really wants to read a book about writing research papers? The author describes his own unique approach to writing journal papers (which, in his own words, has proved to be extremely successful). All major points are illustrated with examples from his own, published works. The book is written in the form of a manual for constructing a journal manuscript: read a chapter, write a section. However, the material it contains goes beyond just this and also describes how to select a target journal, the manuscript submission process, what referees are looking for in a good journal paper, and how to deal with the referees'comments. Each chapter concludes with a checklist to ensure all the key elements have been addressed.

With the exception of a slight hiccup during the height of the recent environmental movement (during the early 1990s), when for a year or two consumers were prepared to pay a price premium for lower quality recycled paper than for the virgin product, the inexorable improvement in the quality demanded of paper products continues. This demand for quality covers not only the aesthetics ofthe product but also its performance. Moreover, it is becoming increasingly the case that papers designed for a particular use must, as it were incidentally, also perform well in alternative applications. An example is that of office and printing papers, which are expected to perform as well in copier machines as in all the various forms of impact and non-impact printers. But even greater demands are made in other product areas, where board designed for dry foods can also be expected to protect moist and fatty materials and be made of 100% recycled fibre. The need to isolate foodstuffs from some of the contaminants that can affect recycled board is a· serious challenge. Thus, papermakers are constantly striving to meet a broadening spectrum of demands on their products; often while accepting declining quality of raw materials. The product design philosophy that has arisen in response to this is increasingly to isolate the bulk of a paper from its uses: to engineer the needed performance characteristics into the paper surfaces while more or less ignoring what happens inside.

The international conference \Operations Research 2008', the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), was held at the University of Augsburg on September 3-5, 2008. About 580 p- ticipants from more than 30 countries presented and listened to nearly 400 talks on a broad range of Operations Research. The general subject \Operations Research and Global Business'str- ses the important role of Operations Research in improving decisions in the increasingly complex business processes in a global environment. The plenary speakers Morris A. Cohen (Wharton School) and Bernd Liepert (Executive Board of KUKA Robotics) addressed this subject. Moreover, one of the founders of Operations Research, Saul Gass (U- versity of Maryland), gave the opening speech on the early history of Operations Research. This volume contains 93 papers presented at the conference, selected by the program committee and the section chairs, forming a representative sample of the various subjects dealt with at Operations Research 2008. The volume follows the structure of the conference, with 12 sections, grouped into six \Fields of Applications'and six \Fields of Methods and Theory'. This structure in no way means a separation of theory and application, which would be detrimental in Operations Research, but displays the large spectrum of aspects in the focus of the papers. Of course, most papers present theory, methods and applications together.

Services are key activities in a globalized economy and they also underlie the quality of life of local residents. The advanced work presented in this book was selected from the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Serviceology (ICServ2015), held July 7–9, 2015, in San Jose, CA, USA.
